A few highlights of having watched the entirety of Vinland saga season 1 with my mom.

She thought that Helga looked way too young to be Thorfinn’s mom and thought that Ylva should be his mom instead.

She was annoyed that the language didn’t change between Danish, English and the other languages. I can somewhat agree.

She experienced “anime logic” for the first time, watching Thorkell throw a boulder like a canon ball at the Danish camp.

Askeladd and Thorkell has the same kind of beard so for a while she could not tell them apart. She was very confused about who really had Canute.

Every time anyone referred to Canute as a woman she turned to me with a “I told you so” look on her face. It was amazing.

She fell asleep during the Ragnar death scene, but woke up right at the end of it (I didn’t notice) and asked in shock “why is he on the ground?!”

When Thorkell told Thorfinn about his family and got to the part where he told him that his grandfather was also his brother she leaned forward in her seat and shouted “Brother?!”. It’s the best reaction I got from her while we watched it.

After Canute’s personality change I pointed out that, as I had told her before we started watching, he starts looking more masculine, and she begrudgingly agreed.

She was not fazed by Askeladd’s death… at all.

modern throfinn is a reformed convict just taking it one day at a time, farmers market job, live laugh love etc, his boyfriend canute is a celebrity telepreacher whose rivals somehow all one by one conveniently die of unknown mysterious illnesses ....

love how the second season walks towards the exact opposite direction of the first season's ending... first we follow thorfinn's journey through rage and violence, holding onto his only goal in life, revenge, and we see him losing it all in such a tense, bloody scene at the end. he's completely lost and miserable. now the second season is ending after we followed thorfinn's path towards finding peace and a new purpose for living. the whole farewall is simply beautiful and it feels incredibly light. thorfinn isn't alone anymore and despite not raising his fists he's stronger than he ever was before. he finally found true determination to build his own path in life.

characters walking the path of revenge and going down a road of self-destruction because there's no time to grieve or they cant be bothered to make meaningful connections because that will make them weak and question their purpose they've been building up for years. the only driving force being hatred and fighting is the only way to vent their sorrows, looking for the answers as to why loved ones had to die ohh but then what lies after the deed is done. or that opportunity to bring justice is snatched from them, WHATS THE REASON IN LIVING AT THAT POINT, YOUR LIFE PURPOSE, YOURE MORE THAN JUST A TOOL IN THIS CRUEL GAMEEE, IT MAKES ME SO SAD IM SICK

the most interesting thing about askeladd vinland saga is that his tragic backstory makes him seem worse. he grew up like that, he saw the way his mother was treated, he killed his father in revenge for what he did to lydia, and yet he STILL becomes the absolute worst person possible according to his own standards

he didn't have to do that! this is not the story of someone (like thorfinn) who turned to violence because he had no other way to survive! he took lydia back to wales and got to know her family - he could easily have stayed there! he still has connections to his wealthy family in norway! he did not have to become a mercenary!

askeladd tells thorfinn that in order to kill him, he'll need to learn how to kill someone he truly hates. thorfinn keeps trying to kill askeladd in honorable combat; askeladd killed his own father in cold blood while he was asleep. but he also killed the young woman who was in bed with his father, who (based on what we know about olaf) was probably a slave. in order to kill the man he hated and get away with it, askeladd had to become just as cruel as his father - he had to be willing to kill someone who was in the same situation as lydia. and it kind of feels like askeladd stayed in that mindset for the rest of his life.

ok, I know the scene where Thorfinn went AAAAAAH and charged down to duel Thorkell over ASKELADD'S life but

that is perfect...yandere, but also regular, canon behaviour for Thorfinn

Him charging down to save YOU and duel for you life when Thorkell took you hostage or smth

going FERAL over what they could possibly do to you, ESPECIALLY if you are female and just;;;; straight up going for the kill

how dare any of them. He IS going to kill them. Kill every last one of them!

Its a typical knight in shining armor and damsel in distress situation...but so much more twisted

These are VIKINGS. Barbaric men that know no love but just fame and pleasure. Thorfinn, just a kid in their eyes, going beserk over some other kid. Challening THE Thorkell the Tall over...you.

And he wins. He slaughters down ANYONE who gets in his way, yells at anyone touching you WHILE HE DUELS and EVEN AFTER THE DUEL HE DOES NOT STOP BUT STABS AND SLAYS AND SLAYS. He is killing his way over to you and as the men watch in horror as the bloodied boy ceases his spree and instead...gently wraps you in his arms, the rage in his face gone and nothing but relief left.

Still, his eyes are empty. And his body drenched in blood.

He seems so caring and gentle nevertheless as he holds your shaking form.

Literally not gonna happen since Askeladd has to be saved but JUST IMAGINE

the satisfaction I have recommending an anime to my brother, who's been watching anime since he was 13 (he's 34 now), and him becoming as obsessed with it as I am...it's truly a powerful feeling lol

I started httyd book 7 on the November 18th and finished on the 19th! (Info for me, I like to get track of time)

How are these kids ALIVE???

That fight was epic, is Norbert really dead though?? Alvin is out there giving me trust issues

(I really like the httyd movies and series too, I grew up with them, and I'm actually glad we have both stories, at the same time it would be so cool to see all of this animated)

The epilogue was really deep and reflective, Hiccup has all my support, he is already changing things bit by bit, he ended the revenge cicle with the Murderous Tribe and also freed the Nothern Wanderers slaves

The quote "Maybe all kings should bear the slavemark, to reming them that they should be slaves to their people, rather than the other way around. And to help them never to forget what it feels to be a child, to be small and weak and helpless."... This quote left my jaw dropped, I can't stop thinking about it

I also loved this book SO MUCH
