in which he takes a moment to justify himself after never noticing your little crush for him

author’s note: akaashi is just a major green flag in this (every haikyu!! boy is 😭) i feel too bad to write them red-flag-y.

you’ve known akaashi for quite some time, starting from your last year of fukurodani academy and then serendipity brought you both ended up being each other’s classmate at a same college/university. bokuto kotaro was your best friend, the little owl introduced his favorite setter to you and the friendship of three gradually become established, and as if it can not be any more inevitably, you eventually developed a secret admiration for the pretty setter when you three have been closed enough. however, graduating separated ways, kotaro pursued his journey to become professional in volleyball while keiji, once said to you he wanted a place in the literature department.

truth be told, even if you promised each other you would still keep in touch and plan every weekend friend group meeting online or offline, you’ve never expect you would share every class in higher education life with your crush, the akaashi keiji. the great thing is you both are paired up for an presentation assignment in the major you and him pursue, you do have plenty of time to stay close and grab his attention from making gestures that he usually failed to realizes.

here you are again, happily humming your favourite song while carrying a box wrapped with a small detailed towel, some big rolls of assignment paper stuck underneath your arm as you make your way back to where you both planned to finish the project - the library. 

“keiji, i’m back!” you set your things respectively on the table, and akaashi nods with a smile on his face in acknowledgement.

“oookay, so here’s your today’s snack, I hope you’ll like it” you grin, tapping on the box before pushing it to his side as he receives it and casually opens it while speaking.

“hmm? are those sketches of our poster? you can always edit them on the computer, why the effort?” he chuckled softly before completely unwrapping the bento box.

“I’m not good at designing and stuff. I may draw as I like and you’ll be the one to edit it on the computer.” you puff your cheek out, hands resting on hips as you watch his reaction to your delicately decorated sweets in the box made for him.

“this looks amazing.” he smiles upon seeing the pastries you made, decorated beautifully with different kinds of fruit as each pastry has different flavours, you probably did not stay up so late last night just to make all kinds of flavours for him to show how much you like him. yeah, probably not.

"oh, it's nothing, I just hope it doesn't taste bad" you chuckle nervously while scratching the back of your neck, letting his praise send you up to cloud nine.

your actions falter when you see akaashi put back the box's cap on, set it aside as he leans over to reach the posters you drew.

"now then, can we start working on the project?" he spreads out the piece of paper, glancing at you as you stand there awkwardly, prefer him taking a bite to look through all of your efforts than just shrugging it off and go straight to the main part of your study session.

"what...? oh- um..." you trail off, a bit embarrassed. "wouldn't you like to try one out? it won't hurt to just have a taste of it..."

"maybe later, y/n. we have other things need to be done right now." he merely states, eyes study the poster in front of him, unknowingly sinking your heart.

"yes, right." you shift slightly, taking the sit by the opposite of him, trying to catch up with him on the progress.

you let your mind wanders off how many times you've lost count already while akaashi quietly focused on scribbling something in his notebook, every thoughts you have are always about keiji, your feelings and the stare you give him thinking it's discreet. what's stopping him from trying my tarts out? and how does he feel being around me? or is that his way of rejecting something without making that person feel bad? flooded your mind.

"y/n?" you realize his faint voice ringing somewhere "y/n..." the voice becomes clearer. "earth to y/n, you're staring." awh, snap. right.

you blink, startled before clearing your throat, mumbling a small apology as you try to get yourself busy with the work underneath you once again.

but akaashi just chuckles, his voice calm and reassuring.

"hey, you seem off today. it's lunch break, please make yourself comfortable." you fumble at his words, it's noon already? as he collects his books and tidy it up at one corner of the table before speaking again.

"yuri satsuki is inviting me to have lunch with her. would you like to also join? i think she wouldn't mind." he kindly offers, probably not knowing the words struck you shocked.

you know satsuki-senpai, she's a year older than you and has been a social butterfly ever since you set foot in student life. she is a nice person, you conceived, but not until you found out that she has a huge crush on your akaashi keiji, her behaviour in your eyes became somewhat annoying. in return, she did realize she had a rival to win over him, you acknowledge that through the smug look she gave every time akaashi was around her instead of you, that is how the tension gradually builds up between you and your pain-in-the-ass rival.

and now she's even invited keiji for lunch? you feel an uncomfortable twist in your belly, screaming that if you do not take further actions, you lose akaashi to her. but his way of discarding your hard work, also known as an attempt to get his attention earlier discourages you hastily. this comes to a realization: ever since he start hanging out with satsuki-senpai, he has never touched one of your cooks once.

"no, i'm fine staying here. you go" you force a smile waving him goodbye. he hesitates upon seeing the downward trend of your mood as well as the strange attitude every time he brings up yuri.

"what are you waiting for?" you scoff, trying your best to make it sound not so bitterly. he nods quietly before ruffles your hair, thoughtfully remind you to get something to eat before start working again, and he'll be back with you soon.

you groan for the nth time in thirty minutes since his last leave, deciding not to eat anything at all after you laugh bitterly to yourself seeing the bento box laid cold by his stuffs which corrects your thoughts that he is not going to appreciate what you did for him.

the chair scraped the floor when you stand up, attempting to compose yourself when you feel your brain need a break from overthinking such situations.

on the way out of the library, your eyes meet yuri satsuki's, assuming that keiji is just somewhere around here as his lunch break partner is the person you least excited to bump into.

"well, well. isn't that the girl whose best friend choose to hang out with me instead of her?"

excuse me?

"don't get too ahead of yourself, satsuki-senpai. just a friendly reminder" your tone evidently irritated as you flash her an unamused smile, trying to avoid her as soon as possible.

but the radio scene of her voice replayed all over your head, your mind goes muddy despite the fresh air you're trying to take in, you let out a shaky breath, tears brimming out.

maybe, he doesn't quite noticed the things I did for him after all...

"you're back. where were you?" akaashi worried tone surprises you after a quite fine time of trying to find you because your study desk in the library was empty.

"i was... out for fresh air. why?" your voice is off and he noticed that. he always knew when something is bothering you, and right now he definitely know that something is wrong.

"after i finished my lunch i got yours, 'cause i know when i'm back you would still hadn't eaten anything." his brows slightly furrow seeing your avoiding attitude.

"thanks, keiji." you said briefly, take the package from his hand and sit down on your seat, never forget to notice the pastry box still intact.

your strange attitude didn't just stop there, it confuses akaashi for a more couple of days of your avoidance, he dislike the way you put a small distance between you both in study sessions, you flinch and tense around him more often, your answers and conversations are brief and sometimes awkward as you seem to be more preoccupied and attentive rather than to communicate with him.

"good morning, y/n." he smiles, your state has been bothering him for days as he is paying attention to your fade grin and a small "hey" as a greet back.

then he fumbles. something is missing...

oh. but then, realization sets in him quite quickly: you didn't bring any homemade sweets today.

"y/n..." he hesitates, meeting your eyes as you lift your head up from the notebook you're scribbling on. "does your home perhaps... out of ingredients or something?"

you are stunned for a moment, knowing exactly what he was trying to imply, scared to look at him directly in the eye as you shift your gaze elsewhere, pretending to have forgotten.

"oh... you mean the pastries... I forgot to do it. I was busy yesterday"

lies. he see through it, you know that, but you can't just blurt it all out that you're heartbreaking because of his indirect rejection that never says he doesn't like you, but makes you feel like it did.

"hey... i know something is wrong, can you tell me what it is?"

there it is - the worried look on such handsome face that never fails to make your heart flutter. but you know, that is just his nature of being an attentive and thoughtful person, not just for only you, but for everyone in his orbit.

so his question remained unanswered.

akaashi has been extremely distracted due to the sudden lack of your affection on him. it's just doesn't feel the same. even if he refuses it but deep down, he misses your midday snacks, your bubbly laugh around him and that flushed cheeks you wear every time he caught you staring. it has been a whole week since, and the fact that you didn't join the friend group video call with bokuto last sunday was his last straw.

he misses you, dearly. and if he doesn't do anything now before your project is finished, he might find it difficult to approach you even when you are his best friend.

and then, on an another lovely morning in the college's campus, an emotion he thinks he's aware of stirring in his stomach at the scene of you handing out a bento box wrapped with the same detailed towel, a small smile tugs at the corner of your lips as the other boy laughs lightly, scratches his neck, sending regards with a polite bow before making his way back in the classroom, akaashi doesn't like what his eyes have witnessed, so when he met yours, the bitterful look sends shivers down your spine.

you turn away, begin to walk, you do not want to deal with your bothered heart right now, not if it has anything to do with him, with that thought, you choose to neglect it because it is just your one-sided feelings for him.

but you hear footsteps behind, next is a small "wait" escaped from his lips when he managed to catch up and hold gently on your arm. that stopped you midtrack.

"please. can we talk?" he pleads.

you find yourself trapped by his presence in a corner of the school's library. there's no point in avoiding now.

"i'm sorry." he states. "i like you, i should've known."

your eyes widen. why- all of a sudden?

akaashi glances at you, softly sighs before bring your hand up to his face and kiss your knuckles gently.

"i understand now, i was clueless, you have the very right to be mad at me." each sentences he speaks crack your heart, but at the same time, they give you hope.

you neither know how to react, nor what to say, you just stand there, completely speechless, it encourages him to continue his speech of pursuing you.

"the last time i went to have lunch with satsuki, she confessed to me." he stopped, watching your expression. "but i turned her down, then, she got angry and started to brag about you. i did not like what she said, so i got quite defensive and... that was when i realised."

"i didn't know when it started. i just knew that i didn't feel very comfortable seeing you bringing your pastries that was meant for me to someone else, and more it's because i didn't appreciate it."

he squeezes your hand, afraid if not, you'll slip from his grip and become somebody else's apple. he certainly dislikes the thought.

"i want your pastries back, i love them as much as i love you. please let me correct such a terrible mistake."

"yes, hello. i've received the box, thank you, my love."

akaashi spins his office chair slightly, softly speaking to the phone stuck between his cheek and shoulder with a smile while unwrapping a huge warm box of freshly baked tarts.

"keiji, bad news, i'm out of powdered sugar after that batch." your voice echoed on output, he chuckles.

"are you free after work? we can visit the supermarket to purchase some. i'll drive, consider this a date with me, 'mkay?"

ramble of my scattered thoughts on the piece under cut as usual cuz i love talking 😋

This has been an idea I've been cookin for a while, and it was so cluttered and unlike any other ensemble piece I've made... and I decided I oughta do it anyway. I love Miku, I love Vocaloid, and I wanted to do something really ambitious and crazy for her anniversary. Crazy that she's turning her "canon" age this year TwT

I had the idea floating around since like, May...? And then finally started acting on it around June 18. I'm terrible with deadlines, obvious with how I can never make a silly birthday post in time, so I started wayyyy ahead to make sure I have some room to be lazy lol, especially with an idea as ambitious as this.

This was finished on July 12! So I had to sit on this for an annoying amount of time. Very difficult for someone like me who just wants to talk about everything I'm working on to the masses. But at the very least, that gave me the time to work on the draft for this post.

Here's some ~behind the scenes~ scribbles leading up to the finished piece!

Left is the chicken scratch plan i made in my handy dandy notebook (whenever things are getting real and ambitious, i always made a rough ROUGH plan in there. Usually I'd do a rough pass of the full thing, but this was too complicated for me to do traditionally. I majorly benefited from digital tools to make this possible). CyberDiva and CyberSongman were considered, but I ended up cutting them cuz I just didn't feel like drawing them sorry-- (just pretend they're off to the side. They gave Ruby and Clara the pizza lol). Right is the "final" completed sketch (before I decided to include Chika mid-way through coloring and VY1 and VY2 near the finish line). I started by drawing the main "groups" separated on a different canvas so I can plop them into the main canvas for easy rearranging and transforming. However I got lazy and ended up drawing everyone in the bottom right corner directly on the canvas since I liked seeing the big picture of everyone's positions. Y'know.

Almost excluded Chika! But I like her design so much that I just felt like including her last-minute. You win this time, Chika fans. VY1 and VY2 were very close to being cut! I added them when I began doing the banner and thought "eh why not". I figured their non-human designs would be pretty easy to include pushed back in the bg. Ik VY1 is more commonly associated with the fan design, but I referenced the hairpin cuz it was simpler and the fan looked very annoying to draw 😭

Sorry to the fans of many Vocaloids I had to cut because this composition was insane enough as is. I promise I wanted to include fellas like CUL, LUMi and Sachiko 😭 I will admit I was a little biased on who I wanted to include over others. Like, I don't normally care for Bruno and Clara, but I wanted to get some more international 'loids in the mix. Also wanted to stick in the realm of official designs and not fan-designs since, as much as I can appreciate those, are just a whole "wait who is that guy supposed to be" situation I didn't wanna deal with. I also did wanna include even more character references through the balloons, but they ended up being kind of ugly and overcomplicated the BG :,) (Oh, and while this was originally planned to be a Vocaloid-only piece, I did end up including Teto, Neru, and Haku 'cuz those are Miku's besties dude!!! They may not be Officially in the club but they're her girls and it would be criminal to not invite them to her birthday).

Anyway, this project marks the first time I've drawn a lot of Vocaloids. Lily, Piko, Rana, Yuki, Yukari, Miki, Maika, and many more lol. All of 'em I've heard or seen in passing, but now I actually drew them, and some have really cool and fun designs!! I got into a habit of drawing Merli after this since I just love her design for example. And I'll probably be drawing more lol!!

Oh and the last thing I'll add for now!! The cake is indeed made up of various song references!! I wanted to reference the "big four" producers, just absolute icons in Vocaloid history. The pink/black checkerboard is "World is Mine" (Ryo), the crescents on the side is "Rolling Girl" (Wowaka), the smiley faces is "Matryoshka" (Hachi), and the three hearts on the side is "The Vampire" (DECO*27, which is sort of a symbol of his whole Mannequin album tbh). I know "The Vampire" is a bit modern but I couldn't think of anything else off the top of my head. I'm a fake DECO fan I know 😔 "Matryoshka" was originally going to be referenced in the colors of the candles but believe me it looked like shit so I just went for something else last minute 😭

Colored! Finished enough to call a reference at least. Their final chapter is finished, 30 google doc pages and 11,345 words later. probably the longest smut scene I've ever written in my life. and will probably be posted later today or tomorrow cause there's two more art pieces I want to at least sketch to share with it.

Post Epilogue BKDK thought/quasi fic:

That suit probably comes with a manual and a bunch of specs, and blueprints, right?

I'm pretty sure it would come along with what All Might gave him. Alternatively maybe Katsuki has it but why would it be separate from the suit? Anyway;

But Izuku gets it and in-between grading papers, he starts studying it, wanting to take the utmost care of his suit.

He starts realizing that a lot of the direct notes about his Quirks and his techniques are in there, and furthermore...

They're all from Katsuki. Some are direct scans of notes he took and even diagrams and pictures he drew of elements of Izuku's former costume.

Each element of the suit has a section of the original concept, which would be a sketch and summary by Katsuki, along with ideas for how a suit should perform for Izuku. Sometimes a photo of Izukus old costume itself.

As Izuku pours over the manual, he becomes more and more enthralled with seeking out where technical jargon, diagrams, and hard-font gives way to Katsuki's hand writing and sketching; all of his original ideas that spurred the project on.

He starts to even notice, with some pieces, the handwriting is slightly shaky....he realizes that some of these concepts were written in the Era when Katsuki was forced to write with his left hand, his right in recovery.

Izuku covers a gasp with a scarred hand; some of these concepts of his had been written while they were still in UA together.

How had Kacchan been working on this for so long with him just never realizing? And not telling him?

He snaps the thick (hundreds of pages!) Manual shut at once and throws on some shoes and a jacket. Shortly after, he is hammering the door to Katsukis Apartment in the dark.

After a loud complaint can be heard from within about how late it is(its only 8pm), the door opens, and katsuki barely registers that it's Izuku before Izuku THROWS HIMSELF into Katsukis arms, tightly embracing him.

"Whoa, I-izuku??" All of Katsuki's former complaints choke off immediately.

"All Might said you were at the heart of the support suit project, but, it's more than that, isn't it, kacchan??" Izuku asks in a trembling voice. " All this time, Kacchan? Since we were in school, you've been working on this??"

Katsuki suddenly realizes what's happening, and he feels that heavy manual pressed in between their torsos where Izuku has it clutched. He connects the dots.

"...yeah, Izuku..." he carefully admits into green curls, dampened by the rain.

He feels Izuku shaking as he sobs into his chest, but as Izuku gently withdraws, he sees that underneath the onslaught of tears, Izuku is smiling.

"Kacchan, you...You're amazing" Izuku hiccups, tears pouring from his eyes. "I-I don't know how I can ever repay you--"

"You don't have to repay me," Katsuki quickly asserts. "Just give me your damn best out there. And don't you dare ever give up that dream of yours. And quit that crying," he grumbles as he pinches each of Izuku's cheeks as Izuku laughs.

Katsuki invites him in, saying it's too late and dark and rainy for Izuku to go back home at this hour. ( "why'd you have to run all the way across town tonight, I was going to come bug you at UA tomorrow anyway, you nerd!")

They end up looking through the book together over tea and end up passing out on the couch by 10pm, honestly kind of a late night for Katsuki, but not for Izuku who is used to staying up late grading and evaluating papers, along with getting small workouts in. He stays up just long enough to grab a blanket and cover both himself and Katsuki.

He goes to sleep thinking again about how blessed he is.

🎼 Your favorite music to draw to right now? ooo how fun!! i got 2 other anons asking this too haha! i love music and i'm also a (hobbyist) musician myself so... usually the music while i draw is dependent on the mood/intention/character i have with the piece! (silly art = silly music etc.) often times i'll loop a song for DAYS just to keep up the "vibe" cause i don't have a go-to favorite when i draw! otherwise i just listen to whatever comes to mind in the moment! but yeah right now (while i draw DCA au stuff), i'm listening to Willow Smith's "empathogen" album & yaelokre's "Hayfields" because i adore that project and it's fun to sing along with!

🐻 Your go-to things to draw when you need comfort? hmm... my go-to comfort to draw is almost always whatever my current hyperfixation is! which is primarily DCA right now! outside of that (tho i'd probably have art block tbh), it's usually drawing myself in varying styles or (if i pull them out of the basement) my OCs. i'm a fanartist at heart, so drawing original stuff sometimes feels alien to me haha! i need a fictional muse to fuel the art lmao

☕ Do you do warmup sketches before drawing? (Bonus: do you have any to share?) actually- no i don't! i don't really "warmup" at all because it ALWAYS ends up being a sketch i post or end up as a finished piece! (i feel like this would make more sense if you watch me draw live ig/posted a speedpaint? maybe for art requests and commissions, but i can't recall tbh.) before digital art, i always drew with a PEN or CRAYON cause that's the most sensory friendly option for me. (it doesn't make a lot of scratchy noises like markers and pencils) so i unintentionally trained my muscle memory and myself to draw whatever comes to mind because every stroke was (literally) permanent + i tried to draw fast and loose cause i hate the feeling of paper. it gives me the strongest, most volatile, and intense visceral ICK. when i draw, i always draw with intention otherwise i'm probably not drawing at all! (this is also why i'll go on streaks of posting often then disappearing) idk my vision is usually clear, even for sketches and the muscle memory does its job! im too lazy to do actual "warmups" tbh. anyways, it's not a warmup sketch per say but i here's a random wips i have !! :3 (it's all LDR, but the last two images are from a separate wip!)

Warren didn’t wake up to the sound of Graham’s and Eddie’s loud chatter, the loud clinking of pans as Karen prepares for breakfast, or Julia’s shrieking cries that rattled the whole house awake, but it was the waves gently crashing in the distance.

Outside, through the light blue, almost translucent, curtains of the clear sliding door, he could see the sun about to rise in the most beautiful state ever. A mixture of the shades purple, orange, and pink, and it was perfect.

It sounds like it doesn’t make any sense at all, and if someone were to ever tell him that the sky could be this pretty, he wouldn’t have believed them. He would’ve waved it off as the coke talking.

But seeing it now, just having woken from the best sleep he’s had in a while, it was real and true. It impressed him. So much so that it drove him to get up from the couch he was sleeping at to take a closer look, as if he was a child waking up early to find his backyard snowing.

He swept off the curtain for a clearer look. 

“Holy shit,” he whispered heavily under his breath that the window had fogged up.

The sky was even better with the curtain swept off to the side. It was like he was in the middle of a painting. 

It was too good to be true.

Beneath the sunrise, the waves that woke him up continued its rhythmic pattern of gentle crashes on the shore, the bubbling it leaves on the sand, and then back to the ocean to gather energy to crash again.

He could stand there and watch it for hours.

His shared house Laurel Canyon was confined, there were barely any windows, and they didn’t have the nearest access to the beach.

He managed to peel his eyes off the scenery before him to look around the condo.

Who knew a celebrity’s condo could be so comforting? It wasn’t just the outside scenery that was comforting, but strangely, it was the mess of the living room.

The loose and weirdly shaped, different colored pieces of cloth on the table in front of the couch, an even bigger mess on the tables with the sewing machines, and loose pieces of paper with sketches of colorful designs.

Stylish designs, but some of them are bolder, more uniquely colored designs, that he knows there’s more to them than meets the eye, but are all x’ed over like mistakes.

He took note that some of them were indicated to be bejeweled pieces of clothing, decorated with nothing but jewels, gems, and silver, and it completely stands out from her usual tight, petite looking designs. Some were clothing pieces that were flowy and wispy, and if one were to put their arms out at the wind, it creates that free feeling statement. 

He picks up the sketches on the floor and tables, subconsciously starting a properly stacked pile of papers and placing them on the table, making sure to make a separate pile of the ones that are x’ed out.

Warren: I mean, the way she was talked about back then was unbelievable. I’m not over exaggerating when I say this, but I was probably one of the only people she had over at that condo.

She had hundreds of friends and admirers, so it kinda made me question how I was welcomed in. And knowing enough about her at the time, it wasn’t because I was a rockstar and she was a hard core fan.

*he lifts himself up from his seat* Mind if I get something real quick? 

Interviewer: Sure.

*he walks out of the camera’s view and into a room in his boat. not long, he comes back with a newspaper in hand.*

Warren: This is just one of the many newspapers I saw her name in, in big, white, bold letters. *he sits back down* I never saw something from the corner of my eye and recognize it this well.

Interviewer: Why’d you keep it?

Warren: *he shrugs with a smile* It’s the little things that matter, sobrina! She still smiles seeing this every now and then.

I bought this at a local grocery store when I was walking around the town she lived at, looking for takeout to get for the two of us. After I found some, I brought four plates of the same order, two milkshakes, and headed back with this and the food.

Interviewer: Well, what made you feel the need to stay?

Warren: Who in the right mind would want to waste their time not spending it with Y/N? *he flips the newspaper’s front to face him* I took my chance, but it wasn’t what I wanted in the first place. I just thought it’d be nice to have a friend like her and get to know her better.

*he hesitates* with a siiide of benefits, because the woman was too interesting to be someone I could just wave off into the past.

But listen to this, the most dramatic title ever *he snickered* :

“ Y/N Augustine! Her rise has been as catastrophic, luminous, and stunning as a supernova itself-! ”

I’m sorry- *he snickered behind the newspaper* I can’t, man. I don’t know how I managed to go through with showing her this, knowing damn well she would’ve laughed at it too. But I know she needed to see it. Especially at that time.

Interviewer: Would you say that that morning was the beginning for you guys? Like the rest of the band said?

Warren: *he nods with a smirk* Hell yeah.

Warren, with two bags of the four styrofoam containers of food in one hand, contained in one of the bags the horrible newspaper, while holding a cup holder with two drinks on the other, placed the drinks on the floor momentarily to open the door.

Just opening a small crack, he was immediately met with a blasting vinyl player. Bob Marley & The Wailers, he recognized, Could You Be Loved.

There was a spark of amusement that made Warren chuckle under his breath.

As soon as he made the small crack of the door, he squished through with the breakfast in his hands, pushing the door wider with his arm.

He marched over the counter by the kitchen to place the food, and when he turned around, he was met with a wildly haired, wide eyed short woman, with a baseball bat ready to swing his head out of his body.

Y/N: I had to have a baseball bat. I bought it from a local Dick’s Sporting Goods because I couldn’t buy anything...else.

It wasn’t because I liked the sport. It was good enough because even if you didn’t know how to use it “the right way,” It would hurt the other person anyways.

I was just a woman who happened to be living alone. I needed all the protection I could get from bastards creeping into my house.

“FUCKING BASTARD!” Y/N yelled. “WARREN WHAT THE FUCK?!”

“ME?” He yelled back. “YOU’RE THE ONE WITH THE FUCKING WEAPON. PUT IT DOWN BEFORE I SHIT MY FUCKING PANTS."

Y/N pants as she lowers the bat slowly. “I thought you...I thought you left?...”

"Geeze, woman. Really?” He exhaled out, in pure disbelief. To think he would leave after the events of last night, with so many things to talk about, he wanted all the answers he could get. 

So many things that can happen from then on. 

Her in her silk sleep dress and baseball bat was not what he had in mind at all, though.

In other words, he wanted her. He wouldn’t have gotten her all of this food if he didn’t. And that says a lot.

In the distance, the reggae music continued with another one.

“Sorry,” she winced. “I thought you were an intruder.”

Warren tries to shake off his trembling subtly. “Eh, it’s all good. I went out to get food. Milkshakes, hash browns, scrambled eggs, toast.” He drummed on the plates as he tells her.

Y/N’s eyes widen, but she proceeds to march up to the counter and salivate over the delicious smell. 

Not long after, she begins to dive in, seemingly forgetting about how she almost near blew Warren’s head open.

She also seemed to be completely ignoring Warren’s amused, yet admiring gaze on her.

She nods to him. “So, is this like, aftercare?” She grabs a fork in a drawer and begins picking at the scrambled eggs. “Back home they usually just leave.”

It takes Warren a few seconds to recover from the wild suggestion. “We didn’t...sleep together, Y/N.” He said carefully. “But if you really want to know what aftercare could be with me, then we should definitely do something about that.”

Y/N, already with a mouthful of eggs, tilt her head in confusion. “What is this all for, then?” She ignored the brave remark.

Warren sighs defeatedly into his shoulder. “Thought I’d be nice. Figured you’d have a hangover.” 

He grabs a toast. “And I thought you said you were from here? Or was that also...”

“No, I am from here,” Y/N nods. “But after my parents’ divorce when I was 10, my dad and me and my three brothers moved to France to where our grandparents were at.” She swallows the remnants of scrambled eggs in her mouth. “I moved back here after quitting 2 years of...school-” 

Warren tuts when he notices the long pause between of and school. “Tell me.”

“No.”

“Yes,” he widened his eyes at her, wagging a piece of toast in her face. “It’s the least you could do. I bought you food that could last you the whole day.”

“I never asked for this!”

“How bad of a major was it that you won’t tell me?” Warren chuckled. “What was it? Dentistry? Dance? Clinical? A foot massager?”

“A foot massager?!” She screeched.

“Holy shit! Are you serious?”

Y/N slaps his hard in his upper arm, which caused Warren to yell out. “Shit! Baby, that stung.”

“Don’t call me baby,” she gagged. “Don’t baby me!”

“But you’re so cut-Ow! Fine, geeze.” He goes to massage his arm after the second slap, now that it was sending tingling sensations, worse than the one before. “I think it’s actually making my arm paralyzed, Y/N. Great fucking job.”

“Good. I hope the paralysis reaches your brain.”

“I won’t let it,” he sighs miserably as he continues to massage his arm. “Now tell me your major, please.”

“No!” She chuckled nervously. “It’s embarrassing.”

“I won’t laugh, I promise.” He lied. Of course he’d laugh, he did just make her blush from embarrassing her.

A silent pause. “...Astrophysics.”

Warren’s hand raced to his mouth to stop himself from absolutely losing it in front of her. And she already looked embarrassed, and with the way she was clutching on to her fork looked like she want to dive it into her eye. 

“...Wow.” He muffled against his hand. “I mean...wow...”

But when a snicker escaped from his lips, Y/N frowns. “You promised!”

“I never promised anything!” He laughed out loud now. Howling laughter, that tears began to form in the corner of his eyes. “What a nerd!”

“Fuck off.” She groaned, walking to him only to push him away.

“Little French nerd!” But it wasn’t until she got up in front of his face, way too close than she intended, was she reminded of last night.

Of course Y/N remembered the kiss. And while she rarely got drunk, those rare times were always “on accident,” and would always have to be her last straw. It was always in hopes to avoid and forget, but it wouldn’t last for however she wanted. She still remembers things.

For a while, she’s been thinking about moving back to France. Back to her family, back to her friends and back to the insane craze of lover culture—anyone, to desperately get a way out of this depressing hold called loneliness.

But she knows she couldn’t just leave because she’d be leaving way too much. It’s way too important to leave for company or love. 

The kiss was nice, and made her feel nice momentarily. Warren’s nice too, bringing her breakfast and all, and cleaning her living room/primary workplace for her that she noticed as soon as she walked in, which is a tad confusing and unnecessary, especially after her little trick on him.

She’s flattered by the guy. Charmed, even.

But Y/N has been in doubt about many things, but this shouldn’t be any different. The feelings will pass, she’s convinced herself, and she will be able to get herself back on track.

So she walks back to where she was before.

When Y/N gets herself to look at him again, there’s a certain way that Warren’s face pinched that sent Y/N to feel extremely guilty.

“Why’d you drop out?” He exhaled out heavily.

“Warren...” She warned with pained expression.

“Hey, it’s just a genuine question.” He raised his hands in surrender. “How does someone go from being a super nerd to a hot piece fashionista?”

“Fuck you, I have always been a hot piece.” She scrunched her nose. “I wasn’t happy, that was it. I mean, I loved studying it and reading about it, but I didn’t want it as a job. I wish I realized it earlier.”

Warren nods. “So you were an unhappy hot piece.” He faked sympathy.

“I was an unhappy hot piece.” She nodded along.

He takes a sip of his milkshake before swishing it around his mouth. “And now?” He swallows. “Are you happier now?” 

Y/N made the mistake of saying “um...” instead of just jumping into it with a lie.

Say yes.

All Y/N could do was bite her tongue and look up.

Y/N, just fucking lie.

“Hey...it’s okay if you’re not.”

Y/N bites her bottom lip gently as she picks at the scrambled egg in front of her.

“Maybe I need another career change.” She snickered. But, no. It’s not it this time, and she knows it.

“I was hoping you would say that.” Warren wagged a finger at her before walking off to the stack of papers at one of her sewing desk.

She watches as he walks back to her with a whole, separated stack of them. “I saw your sketches earlier when I was cleaning up.” 

“Congrats,” she said with a mouthful of toast. “You’re the first person to see them.”

“No way?” He chuckled with his raspy voice. “Oh, shit. Wow...and is there, like, an award system for this? ‘Cuz I feel like I deserve some sort of…award for witnessing such, fine, art...” He made sure to look intently at her.

Y/N tried to hide her growing smile. “So about the sketches you said?....”

Warren shook his head with a small smile on his face. “They were good. All of them.”

Y/N shrugged nonchalantly, faking a blushed expression. “Top notch feedback. New York critics better watch out.” 

“Hey, I’m telling the truth,” he laughs out, “especially the crossed out ones.”

Y/N stops mid-bite of her toast. She blinks a few times, before finally meeting Warren in the eyes. 

“I mean, why are they crossed out in the first place?” He questioned, genuine curiosity in his voice. “They looked amazing.”

“They looked like shit.” She countered his compliment. 

Warren insisted for a further explanation with a simple nod.

“They’re not...normal,” she tried. “If I went through with them and made them, I would’ve wasted my time, and not to mention, embarrass the models. They wouldn’t be able to show their faces or get another modeling gig if I forced them into clothes like those.”

“Okay, well, forget about the models right now,” Warren offered, with a mouthful of scrambled eggs. “Why are they shit? Because they don’t look like it.”

Y/N shrugs as she swallows. She knows they weren’t shit, but that they were too bold of a statement. “I just don’t see the average people to wear them.”

“That’s because average people shouldn’t be wearing them.” Warren snickered. “You know you’re the #1 brand right now? Serenity’s been on cover magazines everywhere I go, with your name plastered at the top as if it was it’s own title.”

He pulls out the newspaper from the bag and faced it in front of her.

It only takes her a few minutes skimming the page to break out laughing.

Y/N: It was such a horribly cheesy compliment *she pinched the bridge of her nose* I should’ve sued their ass back then.

Warren laughs along with her. “I saw it on the walk back here. Thought I’d show it to you to convince you.”

Y/N chuckles, wiping a tear forming from the corner of her eye. “Convince me that my work is as catastrophic as a supernova?” She laughs into her arms. 

He nods. “That you should go through with making the clothes. You’re amazing. And sorry for saying this, but I never pegged you to be the type of person to care what other people think.”

“Well I do,” Y/N argued, her laughter gradually dying down. “I do care.”

“You shouldn’t.”

“It’s my work. I’m supposed to.” She met his eyes again. “What do you know about it?”

“I don’t know jack shit about fashion, you’re right,” Warren agrees. He leans closer to her on the counter, “but I know if you keep pushing creativity like these to the side, the world will be missing out on a whole side of Y/N Augustine.”

“And how are you so sure it’s something they’d want to see?”

“Alright, listen,” he proposes. “They’re not shit. They’re just different. They’re never-seen-before’s, that’s why you’re scared to make them.”

Y/N still looked unsurely at the papers laid in front of her. Warren pushes them to her so that they’re closer.

He points at one of the x’ed out drawings. Under the drawing was his name written with a smiley face and a phone number.

“I gotta run. Band practice.” He tells her, before quickly pecking her cheek and beelining to the front door.

Biting back a smile, she calls out after him.“When do you want this?”

“As soon as you want to see me again.” He flashed her a smile, winked, before finally closing the door behind him.

— SKETCHING

please note that i almost always sketch traditionally first lol it's just a lot easier for me to determine how the drawing is placed that way, but i always go over and re-sketch it digitally

for magolor i always start with a basic egg shape (lmao) and then i add his ears. then I draw the scarf; it's easy to determine the shape and dynamicism based on where the bottoms of the ears are located

then i usually add the cape and hood together. where and how these are placed and what these look like in general are very important because they're the main area that perspective is directed to (the ears and everything else is important too ofc!! but the hood and cape usually help demonstrate where he is looking and how he is moving the most). then i add everything else, usually his hands last!

ohhhhhh god my worst enemy. Hope youre sitting down because this will be embarrassing LMAO

lineart is easily what i struggle with most and is more often than not the most time consuming and grating step for me. If i had a choice i would drop it in a heartbeat, but my style is so dependent on thick lines and shapes that it's difficult to 😭 a hole i dug myself into unfortunately ITS FINE THOUGH. ANYWAYS I'm getting sidetracked

i use my finger to draw all my digital art, which means i usually have to use a Heavy stabilizer to avoid shakiness and staggered lines. Unfortunately ibis paint's stabilizer is actually dog water and doesn't even stabilize more than half the time (in which case i have to repeat lines over. And over. And over again until i get it right) but when it does like me and works properly it's very helpful!

i always use the soft school pen bleed brush as my main tool for lineart. This brush has been my best friend for everything, i even use it for sketching idk it just really like the way it looks lol. sometimes i change the aspect if i want the lines to look more ,, chalky?? or smoother depending on the work

i don't really use this tool much but for this specific piece, force fade was my partner in crime

also i think i need to mention that i use so many layers for this. So many layers lol like to the point it's embarrassing. and at the end i merge most of them (except for the gear patterns, rings on his ear, and eyes + hands, which usually need to be by themselves as they're colored separately) Thank you for layers

— COLORING && SHADING

yippee yahoo the fun part !!! the part that i love the most

at this point, if i havent already, i always create a folder for convenience in organization because this is the part that i stress the most about what details are on which layers lmao

then i add ANOTHER layer below that for the color, then i put every single color used on their own separate layer!

now, for shading, if im working on larger pieces with more complex shading, i'll usually plan it all out. normally when just drawing magolor, i don't really need to do this anymore because i'm so used to it lol, but for funsies i did it here anyways

then i use the bucket tool to fill them all in

i usually have a set color palette for all the characters i draw (though the way i shade white differs. A lot between my work as you can probably tell fhdfgf). For every color, i have two specific tones that are associated with the shading. for example, indigo + violet are shaded with my blue, pink + light orange (or lighter pink depending on my mood lol) are shaded with yellow, etc.

so, i shade the other areas with the 2nd shading color

a big tip i can give for coloring is to look at a color wheel when you draw. i know that sounds like. Such basic advice LMAO but that seriously was a huge help for me when developing my shading and something i learned while studying — if you notice, in all of the shading in my work, all of the colors used are analogous on the color wheel. note that not ALL combinations will work together like others obv !! but it's a huge step in knowing where to go with it

then i add other extra details like extra lighting, halftones (if i feel like it // if it fits the work), glow to his eyes, and color the lines and ta-da!

another tool i use a lot especially with my more recent art are blending modes, especially multiply. i use a clipping layer to add a dark color (usually a dark blue or purple) and set it to multiply, then erase the areas that emit light

and this is the end result! this is a very very basic demonstration of it fhdjg i was a pretty messy with the lighting and erasing in this example but you get the general idea right

i don't think i realized you had a colored version of two of them til today because i was going off of the sketches you posted at the start of the month. the one that caught my eye in that and who i have a different perspective of now that i've seen full color is the shortest hero. you mentioned that the clothing didn't come from any one culture, but if you have an answer it would be cool to hear: what's the long cloth hanging off of the waist belt of this hero called? or, if it's part of the belt, what's the name of the full thing?

[ also a more in-universe follow-up: am very curious about the symbols all four have on their clothing and what your thought process was behind each. i'll settle for the shortest hero's butterfly-esque symbol if you just wanna do one (: ]

Thanks for sending another ask!! This is probably going to get quite long again!

So first, to answer the question, there’s actually not a very easy answer for what that long cloth is called! It shows up quite often in fantasy outfits and armor of knights, and you might sometimes find it being called a tabard or a surcoat online. Really though, it’s closer to something called a monastic scapular, which is a western Christian garment that hangs over the shoulders and goes down to the knees.

The tabard is usually some form of light tunic or jacket worn over chainmail and underneath armor, and I think in fantasy armor the stylization of it as longer and thinner towards the bottom eventually turned it into a pretty common thing? But the point is that it’s usually attached to something hanging from the shoulders and not just from the belt. But having something hanging in front of the crotch from the belt does have some precedence in the Roman pteruges, so this might be where that kind of belt fabric came from.

So in the hero of yore designs, the pieces of fabric hanging from the belts aren’t actually very historically accurate, and follow more the trends of fantasy outfit design. But mostly they act as a sort of conisistent point between all the heroes that shows each hero’s insignia. This sort of hanging centerpiece of fabric has been a pretty consistent part of my designs for a really long time, though in my previous Kirby designs this mostly took the form of some part of a double breasted coat, like so:

But yeah! On another note, while the hero of dark’s outfit isn’t based on any specific culture, the hero of soul’s (the butterfly hero) outfit definitely is based on Japanese clothing! The very long sleeves are based on furisode, but there are some liberties I took with the whole design as a whole, I.e. the pants are based on hakama in construction and shape but don’t actually have all the pleats a hakama should, and have added slits for style. You generally also wouldn’t wear hakama with fancy long kimono I think, nor would you use a tasuki with it. Tasuki are generally used to keep the sleeves out of the way while doing activities, while long sleeves are more ceremonial and decorative. I did intentionally keep the sleeves very long on the design, however, for character reasons that I might go more in depth in if I ever make an individual outfit breakdown post.

I’m sorry I didn’t get around to answering about the symbols! I also have a lot of thoughts about them, so I might also make a separate post about that haha

btw im thinking of making another picrew & specifically focus it on alternative fashion (its gonna be full body as opposed to chest up like my last one) and idk when ill work on it but i made some sketches. the individual pieces will be separate but i wanted to draw full outfits to get a feel for what i wanna put in. if anyone has extra suggestions pls lmk!! as far as skin tones, hair options, scars, facial hair, glasses, & other things that aren't clothing im gonna include mostly everything from my previous picrew & probably more. for hair tho i will be adding more fun goth/emo/scene type styles compared to my previous one. ive also just developed my style quite a bit in the past couple years and i want this to reflect that. ok here are the ideas

TWST Process!

So I got a comment this morning asking if my Ignihyde piece was a Memoji---a thing I immediately had to google to even know what that means lol I'm not mad, no shade to OP but it really threw me for loop to be asked if my art is a customizable avatar.

I know this blog is mostly my fun little sketches or side projects but I am a professional artist! Even if this is a silly little side project to keep my brain from falling it the abyss, it's still my art I drew with my own hands and it's important to me for people to know that!

Process breakdowns below the cut! it's not very detailed but figured i'd be fun to show a peak behind the curtain!

First things first! I do all of these in Proceate on my iPad! These are very casual and just for me to have fun--I'm very burnt out after my associate art direction job on Hit Monkey so I'm just trying to give myself a tiny piece of joy so I can get myself back to drawing my web comic and merch for cons/my store.

I draw each dorm in their own file just to keep things from getting too cluttered. The group shots I do separately in another file. So I'll finish them, flatten them and paste them into another file to size them up together/add backgrounds/effects. I included screenshots to show the breakdown of the original drawings along with the group shot. Nothing too fancy. Also forgive all the unnamed layers x_x I am usually incredibly organized but typing on my iPad annoys me so I tend to not name Procreate layers. You can see where I thought about it by naming ONE layer.

Here is the timelapse for The Ignihyde boys! You'll notice I keep Ace+Deuce in the file--I use them as a base reference for the stylization. I stylize everyone a bit differently but I try to maintain some consistency. I also reuse some bits of their palette as a piece of that consistency. You can also see me go 'oh yeah Ortho's hip thing goes all the way around so we should see it behind him........oh no. nvm that looks bad.' lol

What was most important for me to sell with these two was the difference of their personalities. I was aiming for that 'Someone will die' 'of fun!!' vibe haha So I wanted Idia very compact and to himself while Ortho is energetic and friendly. I also wanted to bring some design elements of Hades face to Idia's face. His bangs cover it up but I gave him a long nose that starts right from his brow the way they stylize them in the movie. I also gave them more color to their skintone but kept Idia more ashen/desaturated--I liked the idea of him looking kinda grey to match Hades instead of just pale.

Here's the non-default brushes I use--Jingsketch brushes are available here and the free comic brushes I got from Di Brushes. I'm usually a default brush kinda person but Procreate's default textured stuff wasn't really doing it for me anymore. I really like using stuff that looks more like pencil or pastel. I've also been addicted to adding noise a lot to my pieces. I know that's not the most original thing in the world but idk, it looks cool. My group shots always get a layer of noise.

But yeah, that's it! These are purposely kept pretty simple so I can knock each one out in about two hours or so. More detailed dorm outfits obviously take longer--I hand drew all the patterns on the Pomefiore kids like a mad man. Every time I erased the edges, I went 'I should probably copy and paste this' and then never did. I love making things harder for myself lmao

And well, technically I also draw almost everything by hand too :o

I understand the frustration of being slow, but "fast" digital drawing actually has very little to do with not drawing things by hand (a trap most people infatuated with this terrible AI ""art"" trend unfortunately keep falling into) so much as optimizing your workflow!

admittedly a lot of this is also a matter of both personal preference and practice - but you can hardly practice and have preferences on what you can't know should be a focus right?

Under the cut is a list of the things I do that speed up my own digital art workflow (this one got hella long, sorry):

1) I sketch very loosely and often often skip the lineart entirely.

Something that's imo really important for actually almost all artists to practice is reducing sketches to their essentials!

A good working sketch should be rough and block in the shapes and placement of the features you have in your mind - the details don't come in until later, so they actually have very little business being put in at this stage!

It's meant to be a guideline and foundation for the upcoming detail work after all, not a finished, tidy drawing in and of itself.

Use quick, airy brush strokes to roughly pencil in some vague shapes and don't be afraid of indecipherable scribbles or flyaway lines! All that isn't needed won't be visible later anyways (either bc you turned off the sketch layer or erase the offending bit of sketch away)

Naturally, cleaned sketches are a thing people post plenty of online too (me included), but I promise you most artists that do proper lineart and/or render out insanely polished pieces have a very rough and probably barely legible sketch underneath those pieces lmao

And guess what! Most of my own "lineart" is nothing but cleaned sketches! :'D

I erase the construction lines like the circles for the heads and redraw a few bits and bops, re-trace some lines for legibility and/or to make them more visible and voila! Sometimes this is faster than lineart and keeps the original flow and energy that's in the sketches, other times this takes me just as long as lineart would lmao (highly depends on the amount of details and how lost you get in those).

Note how I didn't even "finish" a lot of the lines in the rough versions and many pieces of the og sketch were kept unaltered? I also tend to focus more on detailing out the faces than the rest - this is one part pure laziness and one part knowing that the faces will draw the eye's focus the most lmao

But see, sometimes I don't even bother with all of that noise! I just color the sketch as is:

This is a bit of a "trust the process" thing sometimes because a sketch can look utterly incomprehensible until you block out some colors and/or silhouettes to give your eyes context!

All in all most sketches take me between 10 minutes and half an hour, if it's a more complex pose or set of poses of interacting characters it can take closer to 2 hours, but in that case I also tend to use multiple layers for various iterations of rough sketching and to separate the characters on their own layers so it's a bit easier to keep track of the limb placements etc - it's best to keep a flexible mind when it comes to your approach to sketches.

Not every drawing will need the same level of care put into its sketches, don't be afraid of being rough with it and trying out different things if your usual way of doing things doesn't feel right!

2) Understanding the tools at my disposal!

Imo something every learning digital artist needs to get in the habit of is experimenting around with the tools at their disposal :D

It can seem incredibly daunting, especially when a program is absolutely packed with functions, but the more you work with different things and figure out what you like using and find ways to use them in your workflow, the easier it gets and the quicker you become! You'll be surprised what knowing your way around well can do to your work speed :D

Dick around with different presets, settings, colors, layer blend modes, filters etc

One of the first things I did when I first downloaded CSP was to just pick up every tool in the list one by one and doodle a few strokes across the empty canvas - no real goal or direction in mind, just getting a feel for it and then did a few drawings using different sets.

Imo even if you end up never using certain tools, it's still handy to know how they work!

3) HOTKEYS!!!!

I use my pc's keyboard hotkeys for. Every. Fucking. Thing. Mind you I'll be mostly talking in the terms and list hotkeys specifically for Clip Studio Paint since that's the program I use for my art, so if you use something else please do your own research on what the corresponding hotkeys are for your program if the ones I tell don't work!!! I promise you most of them have very similar functions just on different key combinations and will also usually let you edit them in the settings :D (this comes from someone who's at least tried out most of the available ones - Such as Medibang, FireAlpaca, Gimp, Krita, Rebelle 5, Paint Tool SAI (this one used to be my main before CSP) and I even tried photoshop and procreate on someone else's devices in the past)

The reason I use hotkeys is so I don't have to drag my curser around and click things by hand unnecessarily, the hotkeys save me a ton of time in the drawing process!

some examples of hotkeys I use for basically every drawing:

the classic undo (ctrl+Z) and redo (ctrl+alt+Z, other programs often use ctrl+Y for this tho); on touch-input compatible screen tablets you can often tap with two fingers to undo and 3 fingers to redo

zooming (this has multiple methods, you can use the ctrl+"+" and ctrl+"-" combo to zoom in and out, you can use the scrollwheel on a mouse or you use what my personal preference is: hold ctrl+space and drag the stylus to zoom in and out; if you have a touch-input compatible screen tablet you can also use two fingers to zoom in and out like you would on phone!)

rotating the canvas (technically has more than one way as well but I'm ngl I can't remember the way that isn't what I use anymore lmao, hold shift+space and drag the stylus - pro tip, you can reset the rotation with the Pos1 button, in the navigation window if you have it docked or in CSP's case also at the bottom of the screen!)

mirror canvas (in the viewport only! permanent rotation requires a transform!) using the M button (this is handy for checking proportions and when you just can't get your hand to do a curved line that goes against the natural range of rotation of your dominant hand's wrist)

drag viewport (i.e. move along the canvas by holding space button, then clicking and dragging)

merging layers (ctrl+E)

selecting multiple layers (click on layer, then hold ctrl and click on any other layers you want selected individually; if you want to quickly select a long and uninterrupted list you can also click on the first layer, then hold shift when you click on the last, this will select all layers in between too)

grouping selected layers (ctrl+G)

deselect all (ctrl+D)

transform selection (ctrl+T)

bring up hue/saturation/luminosity sliders for currently selected layer for quick color adjustments (ctrl+U)

switching between tools (I memorized which keys correspond to which tool categories in CSP and then use the "," and "." keys to move between presets within the category; I also have my CSP set up to have multiple presets in my tool bar that I can cycle between using the same tool button)

changing brush size (hold AltGr and drag cursor to increase or decrease brush size)

switching between drawing colors This is an especially big one for me!!! Did you know that using the little transparent color underneath or near your front and back colors turns your currently selected tool into an eraser? It keeps all of the texturing and blending settings too! I often use larger round brushes to block out an area and using this I can just use the same brush as an eraser to taper the strokes or refine corners without losing the texture using the C-key :D When I'm coloring switching between front and back colors helps a ton too, and for that I use the X-key! Here an example of how that looks executed in practice:

Notice how I never have to stop moving my cursor away from the drawing unless I'm picking new colors? :D I also use this a lot for my shading process! I will often use two tones on a layer with its blending mode set to add or multiply in order to shade and quickly switch between them for easy blocking and blending! Tumblr doesn't allow more than one vid per post so here's a youtube link to a little demo to show what I mean!

4) I aim for vibes > visual accuracy, especially in backgrounds!

(though this applies to how I approach character illustrations too)

A background doesn't have to be mega detailed or coherent to get across what you need it to!

I often use blurred photographs and video game screenshots as backdrops for my art, other times I roughly block in some squares and silhouettes to give the viewer some implied context of where they're at

Detailed backgrounds, unfortunately, will almost always cost you tons of time to do, so the speed with those unfortunately really does come from extended practice more than any shortcuts I can offer :')

for at least big room layouts like this tho I can recommend building the scene in sims 4 or something similar first and roughly tracing the screenshot for proportional guidance, something I've done in this one^ for example!

5) STENCIL BRUSHES <3

BOY THESE THINGS CAN BE DAMN USEFUL!

None of the things in this image below were hand-drawn by me!

These are just some of the ones CSP comes with by default! I downloaded quite a few handy custom ones over time too lol

I really implore you to not get too overly reliant on them however, they can be a huge help for when it doesn't need to be super accurate, but unless you're really good at making them match your style they can stick out a little sorely, so use them sparingly and only where you can easily make them blend in with the rest of your piece!

Also I've seen your lovely art in the tags I frequent a few times now and while the insane amount of detail you lovingly pour into it makes it a really cool and recognizable style that genuinely wows me anytime I see it, I can also see how time consuming it'd be to create it!

I do however think it's a gorgeous style that is worth every minute you put into it, so please don't be discouraged by any slowness! :3

I do of course still hope that any of my tips helped even just a little bit!!!

do you have any tips on how you color? your coloring style is similar to what i’m trying to achieve but i have no idea how you actually pull it off

Hi!

I'm gonna separate this question into rendering vs. coloring. I'm not sure which you mean so hopefully tackling both covers your question, although I'm not really the best at explaining things.

For rendering, I usually paint using some square/textured brush (kind of like the one pictured below and a low opacity circle brush (the standard in photoshop, and most painting software). Lately I like using brushsets from the digitalbrushes account here on tumblr.

I sketch, and then paint underneath the sketch. after i paint for long enough I either delete the sketch layer or I merge the two. I like to add texture where the midtones are. I think a lot of my "rendering style" is probably owed to that.

I like adding texture around midtones. I also like adding limited random variation of color and value to large areas. Like below, you can see that I added a slightly different shade of red to the lit part of the apple in step 3. If you add variation or slight gradation to the large light shapes or shadow shapes you can create the impression of depth. At the very least it looks more fun.

Also a disclaimer, but for the last two drawings I did I've kind of went off kilter. The process is the same but I used some oil paint brushes I downloaded and I pretty much added as much variation to every shape possible, which I would not recommend unless you're sure of what you're doing. But you can see here that even though I added variation (in color, brush stroke, etc) that the shapes are pretty readable and the light is very clearly separated from the shadow.

In terms of choosing color, I had a long stretch of time where nothing would look right to me. Things were colored really literally, with no regard for lighting or ambient color (background/environment surrounding characters). I would often fix things up using a gradient map and using color burn or multiply on 14%. Honestly, this is still a great way to make things look coherent, I really like these gradient maps on the CSP asset store if you want to look into them.

My colors improved a lot after I developed an eye for color/figured out what colors I like to put next to each other. I did this by saving and making a folder of any piece I saw that I liked specifically for color. By doing this I got a clearer sense of what kind of color schemes I tend to like. I suggest doing this as well so that you can figure out what kinds of color schemes and pairings you tend to enjoy most.

(if you're wondering why he's still glowing despite presumably having been woken up several minutes ago, well i had an idea. Basically it's that if a seer's vision (dream or meditation, however they're seeing them really) are interrupted, there's a chance that the mystics they're seeing the visions through, doesn't leave immediately upon waking up. (The less trained they are in this skill, the more likely it is to happen.) And fully conscious seers + uncontrollable future visions do not equal a good time. It might eventually fade back on it's own, but the only way to insure it goes is to have the other set of the pair physically present as a way to passively defuse that mystic energy. I also had the idea that Sooth Sayers are particularly susceptible to it and that it takes longer for them to shake since their visions are usually more mundane and are harder recognize/fight back against on their own. Basically, i wanted a mystic reason why it was so important for seers to not be separated. also some non-mental drawbacks to having those powers, b/c i love me a magic system with drawbacks. hope that makes any sort of sense!)

This might be a little long so I'll add a cut here, everything will be under it ^w^

Before anything else,

Make a TOS

Set prices and what different types of commissions you take

Set approximate turnaround times

Determine an amount of slots you can take per time

You'll want to open slots only when everything is organized, its easier on you and on clients!

I personally take commissions thru Ko-fi, you can link paypal and stripe there, so payments can be made with those (Ko-fi doesn't take any fees from your sales!)

Also on Ko-fi, you can make separate listings for each type of art you offer:

It makes life a lot easier, you can change listings at any time or archive ones you aren't currently offering

While you can make it so each listing has their own slot amount, you can also set an universal amount:

And on Ko-fi still, you can add your TOS directly to all your commission listings so that people will have to accept it before going thru with payment

So you won't have to worry about linking anyone to Carrd and such for them to have those terms available :D

Interacting with customers is very intuitive, people will message you most times asking about availability, present you the general idea and then you can redirect them to payment

If they are commissioning you via Ko-fi, they can attach files and text to their order (so reference sheets, pinboards and anything else you might request of them)

It doesn't have to be long elaborate formal conversations, and usually it isn't (unless there is more to a character or setting that might be necessary to the piece)

I recommend you keep the clients updated as you work on their art, send sketches and such (watermarked) for them to know how things are going and also to make sure you both agree on how it is looking

^ For this reason I also recommend you include on your TOS how many changes are included in the price and in which stage

For the commissions itself this is probably enough to get you started, the most difficult part truly is just advertising

You'll need to be loud about it, make sure to repost/reblog/retweet your commissions with certain frequency so it doesn't go unnoticed and so that new people can see them, remind your followers when you have slots open, post art examples every once in a while with the links to your comms, set a Ko-fi commission banner so that when you link those they'll look appealing.

Some people also advertise on discord servers, I have never had luck there so I have no experience to talk from, most of my commissions come from twitter and FurAffinity.
