if the agrestes weren't rich i think that gabriel would be the normal one. like gabe's problem is that he stopped running into natural limits due to absurd wealth and his obsessive nature led him to develop some kind of god complex where he won't accept that anything is out of his control. I think that if gabe was broke again and just simply couldn't afford to go on an international goose chase for ancient magic artifacts of untold power, if he had to work a 9-5 to live and couldn't just disappear into his basement lair to commit domestic terrorism and say evil monologues to himself, then he would be way more normal. he'd just be some guy. he might even let himself have a mowhawk again. but I think that emilie would be way LESS normal if they weren't rich. like emilie needs so many people to be obsessed with her so much all the time in order for her to function. and gabe would still have his toxic codependent obsession with her, sure, but that wouldn't be nearly enough. emilie has to be at the center of the world's spotlight at all times because she doesn't know how to exist if she's not performing. anyway all this to say I am so certain that if the agrestes were not disgustingly wealthy, emilie agreste would one million percent be running a massive family vlogger youtube channel

The concept of Zero
Inspired by someone commenting that like the number zero, Vertin or the role of the timekeeper itself is a concept.
The concept of zero being that it is the placeholder for writing numbers, it is the origin but it is also the one that is merely a concept to get more of an understanding or guide to natural numbers to integers. It is the invisible line from the positive to negative, it is the middle ground.
The concept of zero in a more mathematical sense is that it is a additive to other numbers to make them bigger (ex:100) but the number zero itself is a non existent and empty number, like an equator, it is an imaginary line that helps us grasp the locations and placements of continents. Both are imaginary, both are just man made concepts to guide us to a better understanding.
Vertin's soul number is zero, she is unchanging and is considered one of the middle ground between humans and Arcanist. In a sense, she is a guide to most, but once the storm reaches its end, she will become nothing more than a concept, the role of the timekeeper was created for the very purpose of recording the beginning and ends of eras and braving the storm to one day create the immunity for it. The moment that there is no need for the timekeeper anymore, either the storm ending or finding a full reliable immunity towards it, the more people that gain the ability, the more Vertin's role becomes more of the ordinary.
The role of the timekeeper will soon fade and become only an invisible line, the origin of how it first began, on how civilization reached the immunity of the storm, and how the threat of the storm ended. In the far future where the rain doesn't rise, the term timekeeper and the name "Vertin" will be nothing more of a concept to what once was a catastrophic phenomena that hinder the progression of time, a subtle reminder of how she guided the freedom of humans and Arcanist out of the grueling storm, and into a world where the rain falls and the sun rises; Vertin is the concept of zero.

This has probably been talked about before but I just finished rewatching tristamp again and as usual it gave me thoughts and feelings so I'm sharing them here
Knives getting the white angel colour scheme gives me life, not just because it goes against the usual cliche of bad guy dark colours but also cause it really hammers home the angel imagery with him
He has an entire cult dedicated to worshipping plants, it makes sense that between him and vash he leans more into the classic biblical purity look. He doesn't mingle with humanity and as far as he's concerned, he is the perfect being.
It's already known that he internalized a lot of what he read from the Bible when he was younger, same with Rem calling him and Vash literals angels. Keeping the light colour scheme and even the space age clothes and murder snuggie is just another thing that makes him other from humanity when the rest of them wear more practical clothes. It's a statement, "I don't need to adapt, I'm already perfect"
Side tangent here: I also just wanna bring in my own thoughts about the murder snuggie because it does kinda make me think of seraphim, angels with 3 pairs of wings with one for flying and the other two for covering the face and feet. The covering is meant to show humility and reverance before God (they are not worthy to look upon the face of God so they keep their faces covered) but I like to think that Knives has twisted that to humanity is unworthy to view him directly and if they do, they don't survive. I do know that the murder snuggie is a manifestation of his gate but I've always thought it was more than that (also think it's meant to be like a security blanket to him, it's always out so he's always prepared)
Back to my main point: Knives thinking himself as a pure being, one that is above humanity isn't anything new, it's easy to see and he literally says it himself multiple times. However the way it's also represented through his character design is amazing to me and makes this aspect of his character mean more
After all, an angel of death is still an angel. Is it really any surprise it would look like one?

Just a young Rider with his baby dragon. Nothing bad will happen to them. honest.
Rereading Eragon (b/c reading fourth wing and Iron Flame only succeeded in making me want to read something that actually focuses on the dragons/dragon riding aspects. b/c that's why i was there) and thought, hey this would be cute to draw for a speedpaint.
My computer thought otherwise and decided to shut down when i was almost done, corrupting the video.
The doodle got save (thank you csp for your recovery feature!) but yeah, no speedpaint to go with it.
So back to the drawing board. Literally. (and the speedpaint is already late too : / )

A bit of a riddle for you, not a devilishly tricky one, but an interesting one to consider. I think of it as Lal's Riddle, after the great Indian geophysicist Devendra Lal and I'll provide some details on him and the answer under the cut, but first the riddle itself:
Let us suppose you are provided with a strange length of candle wick, it's knotted and unevenly bunched, but you know, thanks to some engineers with a fetish for oddly specific machines, that it will take exactly one hour to burn if you light one end of it, but not evenly enough to be able to assert that any given length of it being burned can be matched up to any given length of time having passed.
Now say you are given two such wicks, irregular enough that the only property you can be sure they share is taking exactly one hour to burn if you light one end of them, thanks (again) to those engineers. You are then tasked with figuring out a way to use these two wicks to measure out forty five minutes. How do you do it?
The answer is that you start by lighting three of the four total ends of the two wicks you've been provided, when the two flames on the first one meet in the middle half an hour will have passed and there will be half an hour left on the second one, at that point you light the second end of the second wick and when those two flames meet, half of half an hour will have passed since the end of the first half hour for a total of three quarters of an hour.
The reason that I think of this as Lal's riddle is that Devendra Lal was one of my grandpa's closest acedemic collaborators and friends. He married young but never had kids and as a result took a fairly parental role in the lives of my grandpa's kids and then, when the time came, a grandparental role in the lives of his grandkids. Whenever we'd visit my grandparents we'd always at least have dinner with him once and he delighted in riddles and puzzles and seeing us get excited by new information, as any good scientist and grandparent would. One time when I was 12 or so, the actual age isn't important, he stopped us in the car as we were about to go into the house from dinner and demanded we answer this riddle first, which at the time I could not but he enjoyed giving us a chance to work it out before revealing the secret.
He passed a while ago, but whenever I think of him, and I try to from time to time since he had no descendants of his own to do it but loved us as if we were his, I think of this riddle in particular and I know it's a little silly, but I think it's an important part of who he was as a person that his acedemic achievements and wikipedia page couldn't cover. I think that attaching his name to this riddle is a worthy honor for him, so if it was an interesting little puzzle for you to solve something you can do for me is to think of it as Lal's riddle if you tell it to people in your life.

i am a HUGE sucker for “peter looks in the mirror one day and all he can see is uncle ben” but i am also a sucker for every other swap-in you can make. (mini fanfics below the cut, with many self indulgent headcanons LMAO)
miles is talking with his dad one night after everything calms down. the conversation is light, easy, but his dad goes quiet suddenly. his dad looks at him, and miles has never seen him so quiet. his eyes go misty, and miles is scared something happened for a moment. but his dad just sets a hand in his shoulder and says, “you look like your uncle.” miles cries in his dads arms that night.
gwen is talking with her dad over breakfast, and something slips out of her mouth. she recognizes the sentence, why she has it in her head, but she doesn’t know from where. her dad freezes, before turning to look at her. his eyes soften, but his face and shirt are painted and streaked in blue and grey. “you sound just like her.” he doesn’t give gwen time to ask who, before he turns back to his eggs.
peni never knew her mother. she died while giving birth to her, so her father raised her, then her aunt and uncle after he…yeah. peni doesn’t know much about her either, just that she was smart, and her dad thought she was pretty. peni’s going through her dad’s stuff one night, when she pulls up a picture of her. peni finds that her reflection matches up perfectly.
hobie doesn’t have many memories of their parents, no photos either. it’s fine, they dont miss them much, and they figure they dont look much like them either. they have one thing that ties them back to that little apartment in old york. it’s a picture, old and faded, of their brother. as the picture gets more worn, the only thing that hobie can see is their brother’s face. it might as well just be a picture of themselves.
jess loves her mother. more than anything on earth (besides her baby). she’s been there throughout her pregnancy, she was there when her captain stacy died, and she was there when her husband did too. it was the first time jess ever saw her mother cry, and she finds out that tears make people look a lot alike.
noir doesn’t look like uncle ben. the thought used to make him angry. why am i never good enough?! then it depressed him. why am i never good enough…? but he slips his glasses on one morning, and his hair folds and curls down on his forehead and sticks up at his neck. he ties his tie, and looks in the mirror. he finds himself wondering, how long can you look in the mirror before you start looking like your father?
miguel doesn’t have a father. at least not anymore. george o’hara died a long time ago, and tyler stone…well, why would he want anything to do with him? miguel rages at himself everytime he thinks about him—not stone, but the man who raised him. george’s been dead for years, why can’t you just get over it?! but years of blood and fear don’t just disappear because a stone gets plunked in the ground. miguel tears up the last photo he has of george, and goes to splash water on his face. he looks in the mirror, and he sees himself. miguel looks nothing like his father, and he finds himself thinking that’s a good thing.

Netflix: suggests Ronja the Robber's Daughter show based on the old Swedish Novel by Astrid Lindgren
Me: "Oh, my God! That is so cool that a little bit of Scandinavian literature has come to Netflix!"
Netflix show: one of the cast members is black
Me: "Okay, slightly unrealistic since this takes place in the early middle ages in Sweden, but it doesn't really affect the story so whatever*
Netflix show: Ronja has blonde hair
Me: "... ok, now you're just trying to make me mad."

i've never seen a post talking about this so i guess it's my duty to bring up one of the strangest coincidences in Star Trek production.
so Star Trek Voyager was presumably named after the famous 1977 NASA Voyager probes designed to chart space beyond our heliosphere. the Voyager probes are maybe more famous for carrying the Golden Record – a time capsule of Earth and a message for any intelligent extraterrestrial life. the contents of the Golden Record were chosen by a committee chaired by Carl Sagan and notably included Sagan's young son (Nick) saying, "Hello from the children of planet Earth." (you can find this recording on wikipedia)
then twenty years later, Nick Sagan became a writer and story editor for season 5 of Star Trek Voyager.
there's even an episode in season seven after Sagan left the show that involves the crew tracking down a Golden Record like probe meant to reach extraterrestrial life that unwittingly caused societal destruction.
like i can't be the only person who thinks this is an absolutely hilarious coincidence.
