The archeocete Perucetus colossus dives through a coastal bloom of jellyfish in the Pisco Basin (southern Peru), some time during the Eocene (with bonus multiview).

I originally intended to add epibionts to this reconstruction (reflecting the specialized communities found on many living whales, especially baleen whales). Yet, interestingly, it appears that most animal epibionts and ectoparasites of modern cetaceans, such as whale barnacles (Hayashi et al. 2013) and remoras (Friedman et al. 2013), only appeared in the Neogene or late Paleogene, or have a poorly known (co-)evolutionary history, like whale lice (Pfeiffer 2009, Iwasa-Arai & Serejo 2018) and pennellids (large parasitic copepods) (Hermosilla et al. 2015). So, no epibionts* for big lad Perucetus!

References and notes about the reconstruction:

*animal epibionts. Unicellular eukaryotes like diatoms were most likely present on early cetaceans, given their prevalence on modern large marine animals (Ashworth et al. 2022). Of course, it is possible that other animals (i.e., early, less specialized representatives of modern groups, or different taxa altogether) were also already exploiting the surfaces offered by these early whales; however, this remains entirely speculative.

The reconstruction of Perucetus proposed in its original description (Bianucci et al. 2023) includes some rather odd (if interesting) choices about soft tissues, including limbs with webbed and distinguishable fingers, and a manatee-like tail. While these choices might be defendable in light of the rather basal status of Perucetus among cetaceans, I opted for a more derived look based on the assumption that fully marine cetaceans like basilosaurids would have probably rapidly acquired hydrodynamically favorable adaptations, pushing them towards a more familiar Neoceti-like appearance (even though Perucetus itself was likely a poor swimmer (Bianucci et al. 2023), it seems likely to me that this was a secondarily acquired trait, given the less extreme morphology of other basilosaurids).

heres my overview of everything you might want/need to know about my ocs & their universe to understand wtf im talking about. teehee

ADJACENT LINES:

the universe most of my ocs live in. adjacent lines has modern-day technology, with an assortment of supernatural elements. humans live alongside anthropormophic animals, human hybrids, demons, aeons (previosly titled "daemons") , and various other mythical beings (i.e. mers)

AEONOLOGY:

a sub-story in the Adjacent Lines universe. i primarily focus on Otis Mortel, Oliver Mortel, Shannon, Tybalt Weston, and Samuel/Vio (who belongs to my partner)

this story follows Otis, who discovers that his brother is engaged in a "bond" with the Aeon Shannon- a long -time friend and confidant of the Mortels, under the assumption that Shannon was human. Otis then takes it upon himself to dive into studying Aeons, and ultimately- figuring out how to get rid of them, and/or break the bond that his brother is part of

OTIS MORTEL:

a college student. during the main events of aeonology, Otis is between the ages of 18 and 25. he has recently discovered the existence of Aeons, and has buried himself in research on them. he is accompanied by a man named Tybalt- the owner of a local library, who has a suspiciously deep knowledge of Aeons and where they come from...

OLIVER MORTEL:

a college student.during the main events of aeonology, Oliver is between the ages of 18 and 25. Oliver is engaged in a "bond" with the Aeon Shannon, but does not seem to particularly care about the situation one way or the other

SHANNON:

an aeon that has recently been outed as such. during the main events of aeonology, shannon is been the ages of 26 and 33, physically. his true age is unknown. a long-time friend of the Mortel twins, Shannon has recently lost the trust of Otis.

TYBALT WESTON:

the owner of a library that Otis feels drawn to. during the main events of aeonology, tybalt appears to be in his late 30s-mid 40s. though he tries to keep his distance from others- he has been pulled into more intimate factors in the life of Otis Mortel. he continues to try and keep his distance while helping Otis to learn about Aeons, and how to be safe around them

T E R M I N O L O G Y

AEONS:

interdimensional beings that come to the universe of Adjacent Lines for a variety of reasons. they are individuals, and their personalities differ from aeon to aeon. they can be nearly indistinguishable from people

BONDS:

a bond is an intangible connection between a human and an aeon. while Otis' perspective of bonds is inherently negative- this is not the case. bonds are mutually beneficial. a young aeon needs a bond in order to better comprehend human attitudes, disposition, language, etc. to survive. all aeons feed off of human emotion (though What emotion depends on the type of aeon). while they Can eat regular food, emotion charges their magic and fuels them better than any tangible food item.

humans(/any other sentient species) benefit from bonds through their aeon providing protection, support, and companionship. in olden days, aeons would provide their bonds with food to eat, as they can be skilled hunters.

SEALS:

a physical item that helps to "seal" an aeons true form. in order to create a seal, it must meet the following requirements:

-it must be at a size that can be worn comfortably 24/7

-it must close or lock in some form

-it must contain some amount of metal

the most common seals are made from watches, necklaces, clasping rings, and pins. other objects can and have been used as well, such as belts, collars, and locks.

what is the purpose of a seal?

seals are used for a few reasons

-primarily, they prevent an aeons vessel from rotting

-they suppress an aeons true form from revealing due to

•high emotion

•excess of energy from feeding

•less experienced aeons who have less self-control

-allows aeons to harness emotional energy in a concentrated form.

(this allows younger/weaker aeons to use minor mental manipulation on others, in order to safely follow their bond around.

and for older/stronger aeons to use more advanced magic, such as creating wards or using minor spacial manipulation)

VESSELS:

aeons typically do not have forms that look "natural" in the adjacent lines universe. while some are fortunate enough to have forms that do appear natural, most aeons require a vessel in order to live in AL

most vessels are taken from humans or other sentient races, but some aeons may choose to take vessels from domestic and non-domestic animals. vessels can not be taken from plants or non-living beings or objects

in order to take a vessel, an aeon must create an "opening" in the vessel itself, so that the aeon may climb inside. taking a vessel guarantees that it will die

A-Accident (would they blame themselves if you died in an accident?)

He may not blame himself entirely if you were to die in an accident. But Zoro would think himself weak. How could he possibly become the words greatest swordsman if he can’t even protect his s/o.

B-Break up (How would they break up with you?)

Before breaking up with you Zoro would start to distance himself a little to try and make it easier on the both of you for when he does break up with you. Other than that, he is likely to just come right out and say exactly what he wants to say. He’s brutally honest and straightforward so he won’t try to sugar coat anything or beat around the bush.

C-Crying (how would they make you cry?)

Zoro does this horrible thing where he likes to overwork himself to the point of exhaustion. No matter how many times you tell him to stop and express your concerns for his health, he just doesn’t listen. It hurts seeing the man you love more than anything exhausting himself.

D-Death (how would they react to your death?)

Speaking of overworking, after your death he works himself harder than he ever has before. Day in, day out he’s training. He trains every possible minute to distract himself from your death and make himself stronger to ensure he never loses a loved one ever again.

E-Emotion (what is one emotion they would try to hide the most and how would they do it?)

Being openly vulnerable is something Zoro doesn’t like to do. He really only shows his vulnerable side with his s/o and even then, it took him a really long time to do it.

F-Fight (do you two ever fight? How big are the fights? What do you fight about? Etc.)

Very rarely do your fights get serious. Your fights are often just light-hearted teases and jokes towards one another. Where its always followed by laughter or eye rolls.

If your fight was to get serious, it would result in a lot of yelling at one another and with Zoros blunt personality, a lot of hurtful words (which he ALWAYS apologizes for in the end).

G-Guilt (what is the biggest thing they feel guilty about?)

The events of Sabaody weigh heavily on Zoro’s mind. He was the first one to get sent away by Kuma, so feels as though he failed not only his captain, but the whole crew as well. He wasn’t there to protect them, to help them. Instead, he was a complete failure. And, because of his weakness his captain had to fight and suffer alone.

H-Heartbreak (what would cause them pain in the relationship? How would they deal during a break-up?)

During a break-up Zoro does what he would in any other situation: workout. He keeps himself occupied by working out, and actually he drinks a little bit more than usual too. It could even get to the point where the rest of the crew feels as though they need to step in.

I-Injured (how would they react if you are badly injured?).

He turns dark. Basically, a demon in human form. Moves you from wherever you are so that you’re out of the way of more danger AND THEN HE TIES HIS BANDANA ROUND HIS HEAD BECAUSE THIS SHIT IS SERIOUS.

J-Jealousy (what do they do if they are jealous?)

Its ridiculously obvious when this swordsman is jealous. He gets super grumpy and tries to intimidate the other person. He’ll stand right behind you and honestly, that’s intimidating enough on its own. But, if the other person doesn’t get the hint he’ll place his hand, ever so casually, on his swords.

K-Kill (would they kill for revenge?)

Ever since joining the Straw Hats, Zoro doesn’t kill others (its not something Luffy wants his nakama to do, so Zoro doesn’t do it). However, that mindset goes straight out the window depending on who he’s taking revenge for (i.e if it’s for his s/o).

Most of the time Zoro just leaves them wishing they were dead. (this seems to be a common thing amongst One Piece characters).

L-Loss (what is their greatest loss?)

I would actually say losing some of his pride. Zoro is a poud man, who refuses to lower his head to anyone. However, after receiving the message from Luffy to train and meet up again in two years, Zoro knew he had to lower his and beg Mihawk for his guidance. It was definitely a hit on his pride, but, honestly… He doesn’t regret that one bit – anything for his captain.

M-Mistake (what is the worst mistake they ever made with you?).

During one of the few big fights you guys have had things got really heated and the fight ended up getting so off topic. Insults and mean words were being thrown out left and right. Zoro got so caught up in it all that he said something that targeted one of your deepest insecurities. He knew he had screwed up so badly when you walked away without even saying anything.

N-Nightmares (how often do they have them? What are they about? How do they deal with it?).

He doesn’t often get nightmares, but when he does they tend to be about Sabaody and when the crew got separated from one another (or really any other incident where he was unable to help properly). After he wakes up, he gets straight out of bed and starts working out – determined to make sure nothing like that ever happens again.

O-Outrage (how and why would they get mad at you?)

Zoro doesn’t get mad at you for much, mainly if you pay any attention to that shitty cook, like seriously, he doesn’t understand why you have to give Sanji any attention when Zoro is literally your boyfriend….

P-Past (what has happened in your relationship that changed the way you saw each other?)

Even though you never found out exactly what happened on Thriller Bark (its something Zoro refuses to tell even you), it made you realize that you need to step up and not rely on Zoro so much because although he may act like it, he’s not actually indestructible.

Q-Quality (what is their most dangerous/toxic quality?).

(SORRY I FEEL LIKE I’M BEING VERY REPETITIVE HERE AH BUT YEAH…) He never allows himself to heal from an injury properly. He always starts training immediately despite Chopper’s best attempts to stop him.

R-Rejection (how would they react to you rejecting their confession (or the other way around)).

If you were to reject his confession, he’d probably try to justify it to himself by saying “yeah actually it’s probably better this way. I don’t need anymore distractions in life.” But, he would definitely be a little down in the dumps about it. He made himself vulnerable for this and it didn’t work the way he wanted.

S-Scars (battle or self-inflicted)

Zoro has many scars. The scar over his left eye was a result of his two years of training with Mihawk, though no one knows the exact cause of it – only that it appeared during those two years. Zoro also has a scar on his chest from his very first encounter with Mihawk. He may also have scars on his ankles from the time he tried to chop of his own legs on Little Garden (I can’t recall if these are actually scars or if they healed completely).

T-Trust (have they ever broken your trust?).

This answer is short and sweet: No. Never. Not even in his wildest of dreams. Loyalty is basically Zoro’s entire character. He would never violate your trust. If he did… well Zoro, wouldn’t be Zoro anymore. (only thing he’s done that comes close is keep you from finding out what really happened to him on Thriller Bark).

U-Urge (how badly do they want to see you after you guys separated?)

Honestly, he is probably one of the few who are able to cope with missing you the longest. He still wants to see you of course – your presence is reassuring, so he definitely prefers when you are around – but he can handle not seeing you for a while by focusing on the task at hand and just remembering that this separation isn’t permanent.

V-Vicious (what do they do when they lash out on you?).

Similar to what I’ve said before, he says some really harsh things. He has always been blunt and straightforward, but when he’s lashing out at you he tends to make things a little more personal.

W-Weak (what makes them feel weak how do they try to avoid it?).

Zoro hates losing. Not because he’s competitive or anything but because losing makes him feel weak. Whenever he loses he feels so far away from his goal. To make up for this he works out. He trains and trains and trains until he can no longer move. He will keep going until he never loses another fight.

X-X-ray (what do they hate and show it most obviously?)

Obviously, he shows his hate of Sanji very frequently. The two pirates are constantly arguing and at one anothers throat.

But another thing he hates is people getting in the way of his dream. Originally from New York City.

Was born to a teenaged drug addict, and was put up for adoption the second she was born, only to be adopted a few short months later by Winston and Betty Bellevue, an older English couple in their late forties from the Upper East Side of Manhattan who had lived in London with four older children, up until a few years ago when they decided to relocate to New York.

Her father was one of the top cosmetic surgeons in the state of New York, while her mother was a leading patent attorney.

She had a great relationship with her parents, and though her siblings were significantly older than she was, she was still quite close to each and every one of them as well...despite some strong and even sometimes clashing personalities and views. They tended to be overly judgmental at times, particularly with Diamond, given that she was the baby of the family and due to her impulsive life choices. It often annoyed the hell out of her.

She was born with NAS, thanks to her birth mother, and later on when she was just a few years old, she was diagnosed with Bipolar, ARFID and a mild case of OCD.

Dime has always had an aversion to food, starting from infancy and that worried her parents greatly, because she pretty much refused most forms of food. She was diagnosed with ARFID in her youth, but it’s since turned into a full on eating disorder. She hardly eats anything, even when she feels hungry, but when she does, it’s only ever the bare minimum. Her appetite is just non-existent, and she wholeheartedly blamed her medication for a lot of it (though that’s just the excuse she uses to dismiss any concerns).

Despite her weak mental and physical health, though, Diamond led a pretty normal and happy life in Manhattan, with her family.

She was a major hobbyist, even as a child, and so she was always bouncing from one activity to another, easily bored with thing once she’d mastered it and always wanting to try new and exciting things. Dancing, vocal lessons, piano and violin lessons, painting, scrapbooking, journaling, photography, needlework...you name it, she’s very likely dabbled in it.

Dancing, painting and an interest in photography were things she still maintained an interest in. At the age of five, her parents put her in her first dance class and she fell in love with it. She learned ballet first, but quickly grew to love contemporary hip-hop, and to this day, she still danced and could have potentially went professional if the love for modeling hadn’t taken over her life.

She was first introduced to modeling at the age of nine, when she was scouted while in the mall with her mother, and after getting her parents’ consent, Dime was allowed to be signed to the agency and soon she began work as a child model. She absolutely loved it.

Of course, being a child model couldn’t last forever and once she reached 18, she discovered that it was harder and harder to find modeling work, and that the industry was one tough son of a bitch.

More than a little discouraged but not ready to give up on her dream altogether, Diamond decided to attend NYU Stern’s Fashion & Luxury MBA program while also continuing to book whatever work she could get within the city. During this time, in between her classes and the drugs and parties she began to indulge in, she started her first ever business, which was buying and reselling fashion and beauty products online. She’s still doing that to this day.

While in her second year at school, she met an older gentleman by the name of Jared, who worked as a bartender at one of the local clubs that she often went to with her friends. Although never officially calling what they had a ‘relationship’, that didn’t stop them from sleeping with one another quite frequently. It was a casual thing, and it didn’t mean much to her - she just liked the sex and the free drugs and booze he’d often provided her with.

At the age of 19, Diamond discovered that she was pregnant. When she told Jared about the pregnancy, she completely rejected the idea that he was the father, which did not come as much of a shock to her. He’d always been a douchebag, and she kind of expected it. Even so, she was still hurt by it, but refused to show it.

Pretending that she hadn’t been hurt by the rejection and being called a liar, Dime simply shrugged and moved on - after all, it wasn’t like she loved Jared or wanted anything from him in the long run. In fact, she very likely wouldn’t have even bothered to tell him about the baby at all, if it weren’t for her family encouraging her that it was the right thing to do.

Throughout her pregnancy and even after the birth of her son, Andre, Diamond continued going to school, determined to get her degrees. Having a baby young - though not something she had expected - didn’t at all deter her ambitions; in fact, it only drove her to work harder and smarter, wanting to secure some sort of financial success and security in order to raise her son and give him a good life. Much like the one she’d had with her own parents.

She was proud of the fact that her online business was doing exceptionally well with how profitable it really was, and that she no longer had to rely on her parents to fund her; she was now financially independent and that felt beyond amazing.

She also became a successful online influencer, doing modeling, makeup and fashion-related content on Instagram, Youtube and TikTok. 

With no luck of getting the kind of modeling work she really wanted in the Big Apple, the dream to become a full time fashion model slowly died over time. Quite saddened upon coming to the realization that it just wasn’t in the cards for her, the young single mother turned her focus on her next big dream: becoming an entrepreneur. Already with one successful business under her belt, Diamond knew it was the right choice in the end.

Once she was finished with her schooling, where she earned degrees in Fashion Business and Marketing, Diamond decided to move from New York to Roswell, New Mexico, to stay with her oldest brother, who’d moved there a few years prior, until she and Andre were comfortably settled and she could find a place on her own.

With her own hard earned money, she was able to buy a building in downtown Roswell and spent a few months renovating it, before only just recently opening her own dance studio, called SWAG Dance Studio.

Despite only just getting her studio up and running, Diamond already had plans for several more future business endeavors that she would likely implement in the coming few years, ever the ambitious young woman that she was.

Still, Diamond never stopped modeling whenever the opportunity of a good job came her way. She traveled constantly - nationally and internationally - and so, had a nanny for Andre and when they weren’t available, her brother would watch him.

'I ended up here, in this familiar studio. Where I found this painting. I'm in a nightmare.'

'So why did I take it? Will I see my family again? He whispers to me, perhaps confusing me for the woman who's studio I plundered the painting from. Please, lord. Forgive me. I wish I had paid mind to my art lessons.'

You put your phone away and set to work. You go back to your room to sketch the lamp, but decided to take it with you as well when you finished. "It might come in handy." You muse, exiting the room.

You sketched a crown hidden in the vines, the trumpet held by a cherub, and a skull on a shelf in the studio. You notice a person shaped stain below the easel, but broke focus away to go through a door.

The room is dark, and you can't see. "Wait, my soul lights up when I paint, right?" You ask yourself. "Then I can use that to light the lamp." Gathering your soul onto the brush, you light the lamp. You feel a little weak and your chest hurts a little, but you can see better. There's a diary in the fireplace, and you sketch it before picking it up.

...There's a missing spot there? You set your dimming lamp to see frames of almost similar paintings, with a empty space between them.

You phone buzzes...

No matter how many I paint, nothing compares to him, nothing is his equal.

My time is running thin, please paint him before my time runs out.

You rush out before the light fades, the door slamming shut behind you. "I...I found all five." You say, turning to face Diavolo.

"...your face looks pale." He states. "What happened in that-"

"It's-" You sigh as you cut him off, looking down. "It's not really important right now." When you look up again, the canvas showed his feet.

"Put everything you gathered on the bed." He says, that worried tone still in his voice. "I'll let you choose the colors this time."

You raise the paintbrush, your soul alighting it...

Somehow, you felt an ache in your heart. Something didn't feel right...

You have been calling all morning, but your sister is not answering. You thought she overslept, and started to do your laundry.

Quickly, you reached your car and drove to the hospital.

You finish painting the motifs, trembling; you picked gold for the trumpet and crown, purple for the book, and red for the lamp and skull.

"Bene." Diavolo answers. "Take a short break while I prepare."

"O-okay." You respond, stepping away from the canvas and sitting down. You realized that you were feeling drained- perhaps painting was draining you life away? 'I'm not going down without a fight.' You tell yourself, looking up as you see Diavolo with the motifs surrounding him.

"I will hide one of the treasures, and you will paint it here." He explains as you stand up. "Shall we begin?"

You step up to the canvas, nodding. "Yes." You answer. "Let's."

You hold back from speeding as you drive to the hospital, the feeling growing worse and worse. You have to get there as quickly as possible. "Hang on, sis." You say under your breath. "I'm coming."

You pant growing more exhausted. The first round was over. You watch as Diavolo looks you over. "We've only just started." He says, his voice soft with concern.

"I'm getting tired." You say, looking at your phone.

'I've heard of spirits going into the possessions they loved in life- I've collected a good number of these items, as a matter of fact. Perhaps these motifs appear due to being a manifestation of his memories, and I'm starting to realize-'

'Of course! This may have to do with the painting's painting as well! But where is her presence in all this? My body is getting weak from all this?'

'Somehow, my soul is stronger than my body is... I have a feeling the black splotch might have to do with the artist. I will rest for now, but whoever is next might be able to lift this curse. Maybe I'll wake up again, one way or another.'

The dying text looked different this time, not glitchy but... Different. "You know, the others haven't been able you live through this." You answer. "You'll live forever, but I can't." Your voice sounded resigned, making Diavolo stare at you with indifference-

No. This wasn't indifference, it is concern. He seems to shake it off. "... let's begin the next round." He said, sounding... remorseful?

You nod, lifting your alighted brush.

You burst through the hospital doors to the receptionist's desk, rattling off you were a relative and your sister's room number. The receptionist calms you down and says she'll talk to the doctor.

You sit in the waiting room, nervous. You felt like throwing up, but you hadn't eaten anything. It felt like forever until you saw a chaplain approached you. You heart drops.

You barely process the events; you were explained what had happened, you were taken to your sister's bedside where she was covered with a white sheet, and found yourself outside the room, blindsided. You notice-

It's him. You have a suspicion about it as he seems to weep openly to the doctors, but as he looked over to you, he smirked.

When there was a quiet moment with just the two of you, you whisper; "Why?"

He- the bastard that your sister was like once in love with until she realized what a monster he was, is still smirking as he gives his answer:

"If I can't have her, no one can."

You almost collapse, almost exhausted. Your brush is dimly lit, earning you a concerned look from Diavolo. "Well, it's over for me." You say, your tone somewhat defiant. "You won- I'm sorry you're nowhere close to finished."

He looks at you, his arrogant look seemingly to have faded. "You... You're not giving up this easily, are you?" He asks.

"I wouldn't if it wasn't for my body." You answer, focusing on the inky, body shaped stain on the floor. "My only other regret is that sister is going to be sad seeing me so soon- oh well, I guess it's a win either way."

"..." Diavolo doesn't say anything, for a moment. "You and a couple others listened to me- and you never gave up. You remind me of another artist, she seemed to be as morose as you. I wonder where she went..."

Your phone buzzes. "I think I know." You answer, knowing that soon after, you'd join your sister...

'My fellow artist? Will you listen? Will you let me regale you a tale of this portrait of mine, of the vivid, horrible week we spent together, and our'

"No."

No? You look up, seeing Diavolo holding a skull with a dim flame in it; the flame growing brighter. "I'm not letting you die like this, with neither of our ends of this unfulfilled." He says, his eyes full of angry tears. "We're going back to the beginning."

You were confused; he was trying to torment you the past few days, and now he was trying to save you?! "Just rest now." He said, eyes defiant to your possible death. "I will fix this."

You pass out as you hear a woman's voice speak;

Not sure if my previous message got through. If you've watched Pixar's Soul, what are the types of Joe and 22? Do you think 22 is an esfp? TIA!

In 22's case, it's difficult for us to understand the mindset of someone who has "lived" for thousands of years but hasn't actually lived as a mortal. It's a very unique situation.

E/I: 22 does not display any real need for private time (for reorienting, recharging, reflecting, or introspecting). Her rare moments of introspection indicate that she’s not used to it or is afraid of where it will take her within. She is energetic and prone to acting, reacting, and speaking without any filter. She knows full well how to extravert but has no proper outlet for expressing extraverted energy, which produces frustration and ambivalence.

S/N: 22 does not display any affinity for abstract knowledge. Having had thousands of years to pick up knowledge from quite a wide variety of learned experts, she barely has any personal growth, let alone wisdom, to show for it (i.e. she seems stuck in perpetual adolescence). Even when she is able to repeat some of what she’s learned, it comes out terribly crude and oversimplified. One could argue that 22 has absolutely no use for abstract knowledge or is incapable of treating it as real, which points to inferior Ni as her main character weakness, if she is E. The unique state of existence in which 22 lives basically prevents her from feeling Se satisfaction, in that she’s unable to get the real, firsthand experience of living that she needs for changing her mind. She believes that she “sees through” the meaninglessness of life, but only because her experience of being alive so far has been “fake”.

T/F: 22's common judgment/evaluation patterns include: plain matter-of-fact speech, can't help investigating new facts, ultimately can't deny the facts, unsolicited advice giving, provocation, boundary pushing, manipulation, picking apart knowledge, know-it-all-ism, weak sense of self despite being very opinionated, weak/fuzzy moral values, emotional detachment, unconsciously wary of intense feelings/passions and losing control of them, defensive arrogance, defensive skepticism of anything that might violate emotional comfort zones. These are indicative of (immature) Ti and Fe. One could argue that it is through proper use of Ti that 22 finally makes a breakthrough in personal growth, i.e., she developed more willingness to correct her faulty mental model of “how life works” via performing more thorough investigation, analysis, and experimentation.

P/J: 22 is paralyzed by the paradox of choice (having too many options). Her judgment functions aren't well-developed enough to be decisive and resolute, which indicates a dominant perceiving function. She can’t make a decision about whether to live a mortal life because she isn’t able to explore the one glaring option left that would help her make the decision - actually living a mortal life. While many Js suffer indecisiveness and hate it, 22 is cool and comfortable in the stasis of paralysis without any resolution to her problem in sight, which rules out J.

Conclusion: ESTP

Joe’s character arc is largely plot driven and not really representative of his personality during normal periods. To discover his normal cognitive-behavioral patterns, it’s more important to look at the glimpses we get of his past.

E/I: Joe displays a long-running inability to connect with the external world, except through music, which rules out E. When left to his own devices, he shows little will or initiative of his own. He is quite dependent on people/circumstances to inspire him or compel him into activity. His passivity is presumably partly a result of his multiple rejections and failures in life. This changes when he dies “prematurely” and feels a strong sense of urgency to complete his life’s work.

S/N: Joe's conception of the world is very simple and straightforward. He is very single-minded and unable to access multiple possibilities, which rules out Ne. It seems that his only way of connecting to the world is through the visceral act of playing/enjoying music, which points to Se, but certainly not dominant or well-developed Se. Because he lacks the tendency/ability to introspect with depth, nuance, and complexity, Ni is probably lower than Se. One could argue that it is through the proper use of Se that Joe finally makes a breakthrough in personal growth, i.e., he became more open to experiences outside of music for appreciating life’s gifts, or put another way, he expanded his deep appreciation of music to other domains (domains that he took for granted until he lost access to them).

T/F: Joe's entire motivation in life is to follow his passion, the thing that he most loves in the world. If something doesn't impact him or his passion directly, he is oblivious to it or has difficulty processing it. His entire value system revolves around music, and his personal identity is defined by whether he succeeds in the manner that he believes a musician ought to. He unwittingly limits himself to the domain of music because it is the only thing that makes him feel good (about himself). All of this points to Fi myopia and self-absorption. His ideas and strategies for achieving goals are often quite childish or clumsy, which supports inferior Te as his major character weakness.

Losing his family made Mika realise how easily everything could be taken from him, so when he started to develop feelings for you, his paranoia spiked more and more until he couldn't resist taking extreme measures to "protect" you.

B- Blood- If they're extreme how messy are they willing to get?

Anyone who Mika believes is a risk to your safety will be killed instantly, he doesn't care how messy it is as long as they're no longer a threat. Although, if someone were to actually hurt you (or even flirt because Mika sees that as a threat) they would be guaranteed a slow, brutal death.

C- Cope - Do they try to deal with this jealousy sooner so they don't lash out?

Mika tries to keep to just sending death glares for your sake, he really does, but that paranoid voice in the back of his mind keeps telling him that you're going to leave him and get stolen away.

D-Death, Do they feel any sorrow for their victims at all?

Of course not, those disgusting people were going to hurt his precious darling, in Mika's eyes they deserve their fate.

E- Earnest, Are they intense?

Mika's pretty calm as long as you stay near him and follow his safety rules, though he does have a rather intense stare. You'll often feel his eyes burning into the back of your head.

F-Fight, How would they feel if you fought back against them?

Mika would be distraught. All he's trying to do is protect you, but you're fighting against him? You want to be in danger? Do you hate him?

G- Game: How much do they enjoy watching you run and have a fearful expression?

He doesn't like it at all. All he wants is for you to be happy and safe, so seeing you afraid would make him upset.

H- Hell: What would be your worst experience with them?

Honestly, Mika's actually pretty tame towards you, so the worst thing would be the complete isolation from friends and family.

I- Iron: How emotionally stable would you be throughout the events that unfold?

Depends on you as a person, but unlike some other yanderes, Mika isn't as mentally damaging to be with. That's not to say being shut off from society and loved ones wouldn't take a toll on your mental state.

J- Jet- How fast would it happen for them to go yandere?

Honestly, the second he realises he has feelings for you, his paranoid and protective tendencies will be triggered.

K- Kill- Would they hurt anyone to get to you?

Of course! If Mika even caught a hint that someone could take you away or hurt you, they'd be dead in seconds.

L-Lonely, How much loneliness would they feel if you two were apart?

Mika would be depressed, but also extremely worried about how you were doing. He would be desperate to see you and make the anxieties plaguing him calm down by ensuring you were safe.

M- Might: How aggressive would they be towards you?

He may sometimes call you an idiot if you do something stupid and get annoyed at you, but that's the most he will do in terms of getting aggressive. He wants to protect you, not hurt you.

N- Next: Would they ever move on after you?

Potentially. He would be absolutely shattered beyond repair if you died, so if someone miraculously managed to get past his walls and befriend him, he'd be even worse than he was with you. They wouldn't leave his sight and would most likely be trapped inside a single room. There is also a potential for him to become delusional and believe this new darling is you, calling them by your name and dressing them up in your clothes, regardless of gender. Count yourself lucky you're his first darling.

O- Oppression- How many rights would they take away from you?

Mainly the freedom of being allowed to be alone and do whatever you want more than anything. Mika is paranoid you'll get hurt so he's alway restricting what you can and can't do. However, he's not the worst to get stuck with, he may sound overbearing but as long as you stay by his side and don't touch any sharp objects, he's pretty laid back.

P- Prize: Would they consider this a game?

Game? Not at all. Mika is just protecting the person he loves which he certainly doesn't consider a game, more of a duty.

Q- Quality: Would they to be secretive or be flashy about what they do?

Mika pretty much hates everyone except for you so... you won't really be seen by others anyway. It's also important to remember that Mika doesn't know he's a yandere, he just thinks he's being a good boyfriend and protecting his s/o from the horrible outside world.

R- Rain: Would they keep you trapped inside forever?

No, if you wanted to go for a walk somewhere or see something, Mika would take you out, but you generally spend your time inside (it's not like you have any friends to talk to anyway).

S- Stalker: Would they stalk you? How intense would it go?

Oh, he'd definitely stalk you. Especially if you were hanging around with friends, he has to make sure they aren't going to harm you. Don't worry though, it won't be long until Mika straight up kidnaps you, so the stalking won't last long.

T-Turmoil, Would they force you to team up with them?

No, Mika doesn't want you to be hurt so he would never try and make you team up with him.

U-Usage, Would they use you to get what they desire?

Absolutely not! Mika loves you entirely and would never even consider using you for anything.

Hmm, not really? Even if he doesn't kidnap you (i.e you two were in a relationship beforehand) he will still keep you isolated from the world.

Mika is rather delusional and in denial, so even if you were a really nasty person, he would still see you as a precious angel. He is also somewhat easy to manipulate, mainly because he'll freak out and do anything to stop you hurting yourself, so self-harm and suicide threats are the easiest way to get him to do something (since he doesn't require your love as long as you're safe).

X- Xenophobia: How much would they get angry from their jealousy?

He'd be more worried than angry, but he doesn't trust other people, so he is prone to getting irritated if anyone is talking to you.

   𝟏. 𝐓𝐑𝐔𝐓𝐇 𝐁𝐄 𝐓𝐎𝐋𝐃, Loraine doesn’t remember much of her early life. At this point, most of her memories are bare flashes through her mind. It was all good - that she’s certain of - up until her mom died in an accident. Her father wasn’t the same ever since, his eyes were vacant and he barely spoke. He left one day and Lori never saw him, after that. She moved to stay with her aunt and although she took care of Loraine it was pretty clear that it was something she did out of pure obligation.

   𝟐. 𝐋𝐎𝐑𝐀𝐈𝐍𝐄 𝐇𝐀𝐒 𝐀𝐋𝐖𝐀𝐘𝐒 been really easy to provoke but instead of growing out of it, she actually embraced it. If the word and the people who inhabited it were pure shit, why should she try to be anything different? She was mean and she started fights over the smallest of things, though she was terrible at finishing them. No matter, she got up and dusted herself off.

   𝟑. 𝐇𝐄𝐑 𝐀𝐔𝐍𝐓 was no exception and the two of them fought pretty often. At the end of the day, Loraine rely on herself and herself only and she simply couldn’t wait until she moved out. She did, eventually, and she quite enjoyed living on her own. But you know, her temper had still not calmed down and eventually, when she was twenty-four, she messed with the wrong kinds of people. Though, they weren’t even people, were they? The vampires drank most of her blood and left her to die like that. That’s when another vampire (see wanted connections) noticed her and took pity on the dying girl, making sure she had some of their blood so she wouldn’t actually die.

   𝟒. 𝐒𝐇𝐄 𝐀𝐖𝐎𝐊𝐄 𝐓𝐇𝐀𝐓 𝐃𝐀𝐘 even more messed up than before. The faces of the vampires that did that to her were ingrained in her mind and the desire for revenge was what fueled her for a long time. Loraine was obsessed with finding them, desperately clinging to any and all clue of their whereabouts. It took many years but she did manage to track them down and kill them. 

  𝟓. 𝐍𝐄𝐄𝐃𝐋𝐄𝐒𝐒 𝐓𝐎 𝐒𝐀𝐘 she had no idea what to do with herself after that. Her goal was finished. She traveled throghouht Europe for a few years before settling in Greece for a bit over the past decade. She’s worked night shifts as a bartender and treated it all as a creative break. The mundanity of it all was starting to grow too boring and calm for Loraine so the news of the mixed school piqued her interest and now here she is, looking to spice up her days.

  𝐈. To elaborate on her self-destructive tendencies, Lori runs on self-hate a lot of the time. She likes to push herself to her limits by doing dumb shit i.e. trying to see how much time she can really go without blood.

  𝐈𝐈. Loraine can be pretty flirty but she avoids actual relationships like the plague. It’s not hard for her to get attached to people but as soon as someone says they like (or God forbid love) her, she shuts down and pushes them away.

Manaster Ramer on “Hamp’s Law” (i.e. *wiḱ- > z- in Albanian):

-zet ‘twenty’: From *wī̆ḱm̥ti - “formally, as well as semantically, straightforward”, and “there is no even remotely credible alternative etymology”.

zot ‘lord, master’ and zonjë ‘lady, mistress’: Connections with jā́s-pati- or despótēs “clearly involve even more complexities (if this is imaginable!) than Hamp’s treatment”.

Manaster Ramer says Orel is wrong about Hamp’s proposal: zot can’t be straightforwardly identified with Skt. viś-pati-. Hamp’s proposal is actually *wiḱ-eh2-[s]-pti-, with:

- “the replacement of *poti- by the ‘(compounding?) equivalent of Lat. -pte’” - but “given the propensity of Albanian for losing all manner of unstressed vowels”, this may not be necessary

- the replacement of *wiḱ-ós with *wiḱ-ā-s (since *o > a, but *ā > o)

- loss of the final -s in *wiḱeh2s

Manaster Ramer objects to loss of final -s more than I think is necessary - Skt. viś-pati-, Lith. viēšpats, TA wikpots etc. don’t show this -s either. If for whatever reason Albanian remodeled the consonant-stem *wik- element to an ā-stem *wikeh2, *wikeh2poti- seems reasonable aside from the total loss of *-po-.

He instead proposes compensatory lengthening, or the replacement of the genitive with an instrumental in *-eh1, giving *wiḱéh1-p(o)ti- and *wiḱéh1-p(o)t-n-i-eh2. (Why not just *-n-ih2?) This solves the problem of the vowel, but the formation has no direct parallels in IE and the *-po- is still difficult.

Derivation from *dyēw- (a long vowel is necessary) seems preferable, but Huld dismisses this with no details.

zog ‘bird’: Hamp proposes *h2wi-ḱe-gwo- (in Orel’s rendering, *wiḱe-gʷo-), with connections to Lat. avis, etc. But this requires “some form of Winter’s Law ... but just what version he does not say” in order to lengthen *e, which as a thematic vowel is “unexpected”, and “there is no compelling reason to believe that the suffix *-ke/o- had a variant *-ḱe/o-. Manaster Ramer concludes that this etymology is actually a joke at the expense of Nostraticists.

Orel says this is a loan - cf. Arm. jag ‘chick’, NPers. zâq ‘cub’.

zëmër ~ zamër ‘afternoon meal’: *wik-Ha(:)mVr “(when) the time is ‘the hot-part-of-the-day’“, cf. Russian ужин ‘dinner’ < *jùžinŭ < *jugŭ ‘south, south wind’ (Wiktionary: "south" ⇒ "the time of the day when the sun is in the south" ⇒ "supper") for the semantic development and Gk. hesperos < *wey(ks)-k(ʷ)speros for the formation. This requires *wik- (with a plain velar) > z-, an extension of Hamp’s Law.

This *wik element, unclear to me, is apparently from *weyk/g- ‘Wechsel, unit of time’ > Lat. vicis (gen.), OHG wëhha, wohha, but Manaster Ramer points out that for hesperos and its cognates we need instead *wek- with no *y. The second element is *h2emVr-.

This word isn’t mentioned by Huld or Demiraj. Orel proposes borrowing from Gk diḗmeron ‘period of 24 hours’, but mentions Camarda’s proposal of zëmër = zemër as ‘center of the day’ and Çabej’s comparison to Gk êmar, which can’t explain the initial z-. Considering di > z / _V in loans (e.g. gaz < Lat. gaudium), and the regularity of ē > e in loans, Orel’s proposal seems straightforward. Manaster Ramer’s is not - we need an even more bizarre expansion of Hamp’s Law and a *wik- element that can’t actually be connected to the *we- of hesperos. For the semantics of ‘period of 24 hours’ ⇒ ‘afternoon meal’, consider Eng. ‘day’ = ‘period of 24 hours’ and ‘part of a 24-hour period during which the sun is up’; from there, ‘daytime meal’ ⇒ ‘afternoon meal’ seems reasonable, at least in the winter.

zemër ‘heart’:

*Hwi-kemH-r “(something coming) out of a (belt-like!) tight space”, with *kemH- > “some of the words conveniently summarized as camera ~ homard and/or Iran. *kamarā- and/or OInd. kmar-“. This also requires an extension of Hamp’s Law to plain velars - and the mindset of a “primitive butcher”, less objectionably. (Manaster Ramer appeals vaguely to the pericardium.)

Huld tentatively suggests *gʷhen-mer- instead.

None of these etymologies could stand without support from -zet. Are there any PIE words (or Greek, Latin, or Slavic loans) of the form *{ d(h)y- | ǵ(h)y- |  gʷ(h) }-{ e(u) | ēu | oi | | ō(i) | ai | āi }-t- that could somehow develop semantically into ‘twenty’?

Another (tortured) possibility is some form like *...s-dwoh1-t-, since *-sd- > Alb. -dh- in pidh < *pisdeh2, or -th- when preceded by a voiced consonant as in gjeth ‘foliage, green leaves’ ~ PSl. *gvozdĭ ‘wood, forest’. For pidh we have PAlb. *pidz < *pizd-, so presumably *-s-dwō- > *-zdwō- > *-dzwō- > *džwō- > ze-. This sigmatic element could also be connected to the dh- in dhjetë ‘ten’, which is traditionally explained as coming from lenition in compounds like tridhjetë. The *-t- element could be connected to the -të in dhjetë, but the final schwa is difficult; and I don’t know of any possible source for the prefixal *...s-. (Worst possible proposal: zero-grade of bare *deḱ- found in PGmc. *teguz, giving *dḱ-dw- > *h1ḱ-dw- > *dz-dw- > *z-dw- > *dzw- with the necessary but baseless assumption of cluster deaffrication.)
