Penny was used to getting hugs from his daughters, that much went without saying. However, he didn't recognize the fluffy pink arms currently wound around his midsection...and frankly, that was enough to make him yelp in terror. The sound immediately brought his daughters rushing into the room, their weapons trained on the intruder. "Let go of our daddy!" Elisa, one of the younger girls, demanded.

Penny, for his part, was trembling like a leaf. "Don't- Don't hurt my girlsss, pleassse," he begged, trembling like a leaf. "I'll give you anything you want, jussst leave usss be."

The Heart's Deceitful Lesson

Relationships: Raphael/Haarlep; Raphael/Male Durge (my character Cian) Summary: Raphael knew it had merely been a matter of time before the disdainful incubus would grasp a chance to betray their master. The attempt went wrong and now they will pay the price. But has there been more to the deed than visible at first view? A prompt filled for @karneo 💕 (I'm always open for Raphael prompts btw, it just may take me a little time to answer them. 🥰) Tags of importance: Betrayal, Character Death, Hurt No Comfort, Angst, Implied Torture, Injury, Blood, Fiends With Feelings AO3 ~ Betrayal always followed those on the path to glory, increasing exponentially with growing power. It came with inevitable precision to those aiming high and by no means disguised well enough to elicit his surprise, even less from the despicable, renitent creature who had resided in his bed for far too long.

Centuries, centuries of grudging companionship, spiked with their flaming hatred, with his own aversion for the distasteful gift, spiked with the bitter taste of their mockery, with his well-aimed punishments, spiked with unmatched understanding, glimpses into his soul he had granted against his better judgment, a connection that ran deep, even misplaced tenderness, an aimless longing, moments of heavy exhaustion caught and held in their embrace, all of it thrown away in the blink of an eye.

It was not the treachery that bore the true offense – he should never have ceased expecting it –, it was the execution of the attempt that bordered on an insult, an insult of his intellect and abilities and even of their hell-forged bond itself.

Hot blood drenched the fabric of his doublet. He had not bothered to heal the wound gaping near his shoulder, too many inches from his heart. What a poetic target, how deeply ironic the miss. And still, the defiant organ was throbbing and aching for the fragment of an illusion he had indulged in so inattentively, captured in their steady, familiar dance.

‘No venomous cobra's stab e'er stung, Like nectared lies on a false friend's tongue.’ The bloody dagger before him tainted the dark wood of his desk and the deep, lush red mixed with the expensive poison it carried. Unfortunately for the traitor, his favorite client had filled his repertoire with a collection of no less efficacious antidotes only weeks ago.

The harlot had not left the house, he sensed them strong as ever; they did not attempt to run like the cowardly lizard they were and to escape and flee his vengeance, probably knowing with ultimate certainty that he would find them no matter which deep, dark hole they’d crawl into.

The moment of their attack lingered in him as if the dagger had never left his body, relentless and sharp, cutting much more effectively now in the afterglow than in the second of the amateurish attempt on his life: The swift shadow – invisible before –, it had drawn his attention away from his paperwork, the shining blade – darting towards his chest –, it had pierced his flesh with pathetic inaccuracy, his grip – fast enough to close around the fabric of their cape –, it had revealed his own fear-stricken face staring back at him.

They had swiftly retreated into the shadows and out of the room.

How long did he sit here already, unable to move, unable to fully process?

The cape lay useless on the floor, still smelling like their perfume. The cinnamon note, a calming scent to him before, now threatened to make his stomach turn. Enough. His fingers closed around the hilt of the dagger. He needed to act. The anger he experienced felt oddly cold, like burning ice in his veins when he finally made his way to the boudoir.

He would not have been able to tell what he had expected. Haarlep with a weapon in their hand, ready to throw themselves into a desperate, hopeless battle? Haarlep on their knees, begging for his forgiveness with sickening sweetness, seduction on their tongue? Haarlep offering a worthless deal, trying to make him forget that all they got was already his and his alone? What he saw, however, seemed almost surreal to him. The traitor lay there on his bed, relaxed, unimpressed, with a taunting grin on their face. Even after all this time glamoured to mirror his features, it never had lost the last luring, irksome (cherished? – he banned the thought as fast as it came) impact of their own underlying traits. “You seem tense tonight, master.” Haarlep raised, smooth like a snake in disguise. “– Struggling with a disobedient pet?” Their eyes lingered on his wound with unconcealed hunger. What game are they playing? Haarlep left the soft mattress and moved towards him, each movement graceful and strong, not carrying a hint of fear. “Your body yearns for peace, to give in to the pleasure of letting go.” And suddenly he understood, eyes widening: They were distracting him for a second attempt. Wearing the smile still on their lips, they reached out for him – “Allow me to …” – and he raised his hand with firm determination, thrusting the dagger forwards, aiming for the target they had missed. The sharp blade sunk into their chest with gruesome ease. “Enough of your insulting antics. You must have known the price.” Their face showed … confusion? “Raphael …” His name left their trembling lips as a rough rattle. “Why …” Fire flooded his senses. They had the audacity? He wanted to grab their throat, wanted to cut off their last treacherous breaths. In a reflex, he caught their body before it fell to the ground.

There was an ocean of pain in their eyes, so much of it not caused by the iron. Their claws sunk into his clothes and skin as if to hold onto him.

Not even now they show me a flicker of respect and stop their ridiculous farce. His heart throbbed in the agonizing rhythm of their blood leaving their chest and tickling over his hand. “Go now, sweet companion, Fallen from grace.” He spoke the words with somber calmness – betrayed only by the slightest tremor. His hand caressed one of their horns, their silken hair. “Nothing keeps its rhyme or reason When darkness claims your loved face.” Their shaking hand reached out for his cheek, cupping it with unbearable tenderness that sharply contrasted everything that had happened within the last hour. Haarlep grinned a strained grin, bearing sharp canines. It never had looked like his own. He flinched when he felt a touch on his tail. Haarlep’s had entangled with his, squeezing in a last goodbye. “Take care, little brat.” Their features grew stiff. The grip around his tail loosened. A watery drop met their lifeless lips and he needed a moment to realize it had been one of the tears falling from his eyes. Captured in its grip, he could not bring himself to shake off the unacceptable weakness. He was numb when he carried Haarlep back to the bed and placed them there as if they were sleeping. A feeling in him grew louder and louder, like a constant rustling, now tearing on all his senses: Something was wrong. Entirely. What had been a vague impression before became a sinister certainty. He sensed … a presence, like a gaze on him, hidden from view, expecting to stay unnoticed there in the shadows. Ice seemed to flood his innards when he cast a spell. It can’t be true, it mustn’t. But his hope, once more, got shattered. His magic revealed the intruder: Red skin, majestic horns, sharp features – as if they had been ripped out of his aching chest. The younger, slightly adjusted version of his face was looking at him once more; as if Haarlep had never died, as if they weren’t lying cold and lost right next to him on the bed. Even their smell oozed from the vile creature. Shock appeared on those stolen features, but before the intruder managed to escape a second time, he cut off their way to the door, gripped them by their shirt, and lifted them from the ground. “Show yourself!” he demanded; voice sharp with bewildered rage. They didn’t react, only made a muffled sound. With unrestrained force, he threw them against the wall behind them. Stonework crumbled and they gasped in pain when they sunk to the ground. The magical disguise fell from their body and revealed ashen skin, long black hair, and two mismatching eyes looking up at him with heavy fear. “No.” The word left his lips like a breathless gasp. His little mouse, his favorite client, his occasional lover who had steadily made his way into his dealings, into his life. The realization felt like someone had plunged him into frozen water. “I had no choice! Let me explain!” Cian pleaded. “You betrayed me.” The bewilderment even muffled his rage. “After everything. You betrayed me!” “No! That’s not true! The attack …, I, I aimed at your shoulder, made sure you would have the antidote at hand! It was an act, but an act based on an important truth. You needed to finally believe it! The spying incubus was the one who would have betrayed you, rather sooner than later but in a far more dangerous way than the one I have staged! You didn’t want to listen! But I have proof! If only you let me …” “You made me kill them.” The full extent of the deceit, of what the mortal had done, it seemed to resist reaching his mind. “I showed you something you would have seen anyway! Eventually! And then maybe you wouldn’t have gotten the chance to react!” With three forceful steps, he reached the kneeling drow, gripped his hair, and ripped his head backward. He could snap his neck or cut his throat in an instant. But no. No. He would not experience the relief of death. Oh, beg for it, yearn for it, but he would keep it just out of reach for him. “Not so much a mouse than a rat.”

Cian looked up to him, not struggling against his fate. Not yet. But he saw tears shining in his eyes. The first of many to follow.

“Raphael ..., I did it for you.”

Everything in him grew hard. “No venomous cobra's stab e'er stung, Like nectared lies on a false friend's tongue,” he said quietly. With a flick of his fingers, he brought him to a room that would serve as his prison until he’d have worked out some more specific, significant details for him. “Please, let me show you what caused my decision!” “Better by far the deadliest foe Who does not fail to let you know” An expression of resignation overshadowed Cian’s face when he roughly let go of him and turned around without another word. The peculiarities of his new chamber would suppress the sorcerer’s magic. “He is your foe, nor does it smart,” Cian answered, a deep sadness in his voice, “As badly, when he rends your heart.” Raphael didn’t turn around to him again, the chaos in him too strong to withstand it any longer in the presence of the traitor. Instead, he clicked his fingers once more, leaving the room behind.

Stern but Caring Caretaker.

“You need to hold still,” he said, repeating his instruction from earlier.  He paused, watching her carefully with dark eyes, but didn’t ask her if she needed help with it.  Instead, he said, “If you need a break, tell me.  Or tap my leg.  Understood?” 

Janiya nodded, and then said, “Yes,” to his expectant look.

He had another cotton ball soaked in antiseptic, and was more thorough this time, ensuring that he cleaned all the remnants of blood off her face.  She sat still and ignored the burning, focusing her eyes on the faint scar on Darin’s cheek.

When he turned to throw the cotton away, she saw that it had turned pink, dotted with specks of red.

He returned with the tweezers.

“Rita wants snakes,” he said, and the statement was startling enough that the slide of thread through her skin came as an aftershock.  By the time Janiya realized what had happened, one thread was already out.

“What?” she asked hoarsely as Darin turned to place the snippet of thread on a paper towel.  The thread had originally been black, but it gleamed red in the light.

“Snakes,” Darin replied easily, moving back.  He was exceedingly careful – one hand on her chin, to ensure she didn’t flinch away, the other braced on her cheek, tweezers in its grasp.  “I’m actually not sure whether she wants to be a snake charmer,” the thread was sliding out, too slow and too fast at once, “or if she wants a snake pit, and frankly I’m not asking.”

“Are you worried I’ll feed you to them?” came a teasing voice near them and Janiya flinched violently, nearly tearing herself out of Darin’s grip. 

He paused, waiting until she stilled before resuming his task.  Janiya swallowed, unable to stop the burn of tears as they started again – she didn’t want anyone else here.

She didn’t want anyone to see her.  To laugh, to mock, to condescend like she knew they were waiting to do.

“You know I don’t like snakes,” Darin said and Rita laughed.  The couch dipped slightly to her left, and Janiya presumed that Rita had taken a seat.

“They’re harmless, Darin.”

The tears fell faster with every thread, as pain flared with every little tug before the thread was free.  At the feel of it, sliding through her lips.  The all-too-familiar feel.

She blinked and there were hands holding her down, holding her in place, and there was tugging at her lips and fresh, agonizing pain as the needle forced its way through, over and over and over –

The pressure on her chin and cheek vanished.

Janiya blinked, and realized that there was no needle.  No hands holding her down.  Darin watched her, his hands on his knees, leaning back.  Away from her.

Janiya realized she was shaking.  Her fingers were trembling and her breathes were ragged – through her mouth, as if to prove that she could.

“Janiya knows snakes are harmless, don’t you?” Rita asked.

She closed her eyes at the question.  She didn’t – she wasn’t – was she really asking her?

The silence stretched, broken only by her hoarse, gasping breaths, and Janiya quietly, shakily mumbled, “Yes.”  She didn’t turn to look at Rita, afraid of what she might find on the other girl’s face. It was cowardly, only a chance to delay confrontation, but Janiya seized it.

If she didn’t see anyone, then it wasn’t real.

If no one saw her, then it wasn’t real.

“See, Darin!  You’re just being a scaredy-cat,” Rita said.

“Forgive me of being cautious around one of the world’s deadliest predators,” Darin said dryly.

“Are you talking about the snakes, or are you talking about me?” Rita laughed.

Darin turned towards her and raised a single eyebrow.  Rita’s laughs grew louder.

Darin turned back to Janiya with an exasperated look on his face.  “Tell her I’m being reasonable,” he said, “Would you go near a snake?”

Janiya could’ve said several cutting things to that.  Several sneers of superiority.  A smirk of delight as she found a weakness, even one as simplistic as that, and hoarded it to ensure she always had a weapon in her arsenal. 

But Janiya was tired. Her lips throbbed and Darin wasn’t done and she wasn’t following this conversation closely enough to pick up on any undercurrents.

“…I once held a cobra,” she said, quietly and honestly.

Darin did a double-take and there was a lurch of movement on the couch – Rita bounced into view, her eyes open wide and a smile on her face.

The smile faltered once she saw Janiya, but her tone seemed determined to make up for it.  “Really?” she gasped, “Where was it?  When?”

“Rita,” Darin said calmly and Janiya realized she’d pressed herself back into the cushions again.

“Oh, sorry, just got a little excited,” Rita said – Janiya knew she was staring at her lips, it was difficult to miss the direction of her gaze, but Rita turned back to take a seat on the opposite couch.

She still leaned forward, as if to hear Janiya’s answer.

As if she cared about Janiya’s answer.

Janiya shoved that thought out of her head – the dreams might be pleasant now, but they would hurt ten times worse when they were dashed.

“On a hiking trip. When I was in high school.”  Darin reached forward and Janiya let him grasp her chin again, bringing up the tweezers.

“See, Darin, snakes are harmless!” Rita said.  Janiya could see her out of the corner of her eye, but focused on Darin.

“A cobra’s venom can kill you in thirty minutes,” Darin said.  Another quiet slick as the thread slid out. “Your lungs stop working.  You suffocate, dying slowly and painfully. Does that sound like harmless to you?”

“I’m not tell you to hold it in your bare hands,” Rita scoffed, “And that’s not what Janiya did either, right?”

She hummed in agreement, thinking of the furiously hissing snake in the plastic jar, heavy in her hands. Her friends had been too afraid to hold it, and had hovered around her with the fascination and fear.

It had felt heady, a power in her hands, a dangerous animal contained.  It had felt scary, looking into its eyes and knowing that the snake would soon be released, back into the woods they’d just hiked through.

If Janiya clung to the memory, then she could ignore the slick of thread through skin, piece by awful piece.

“See, it’s perfectly safe if you take some precautions!”

“You know what else is safe?” Darin said, “Not going anywhere near venomous animals.”

“Yeah, well, throwing knives at a board isn’t all that safe either,” Rita rejoined.

“It is if there’s no one standing near the board,” Darin replied.

“And neither is balancing on a rope in midair,” Rita continued.

“I’m unsure of where this argument is going,” Darin cut in, straightening up.  He’d removed all the threads from her upper lip and Janiya watched as he took out a small tube of cream.

There was a long pause as Darin smeared the cream on the pinprick wounds, his fingers light, careful not to press too hard where sustained pressure had led to bruises and sore, throbbing aches.

“Ivy’s a menace,” Rita said finally, as Darin capped the tube and picked up the tweezers again.

“On that we can both agree,” Darin laughed.

“What do you want to do for the carnival, Janiya?” Rita asked, as Darin gripped her face again. The threads on the bottom were easier – the skin wasn’t as sensitive and the pinch of the needle hadn’t hurt as much.

“Maybe you could be a fortune teller,” Darin hummed.  His pace was slow and steady, even as Janiya itched for it to be faster, for it to be over already.

“Ooh, that would be nice! We could get you a crystal ball and everything,” Rita said.  Janiya flicked her gaze over – the girl was smiling but her eyes were sad.

“And you can predict that Rita will get eaten by her snakes,” Darin said, his lips twitching to a smile at Rita’s spluttering, “And you’ll be proven right, and everyone will believe your fortunes after that.”

“Or you can predict that a snake will find its way into Darin’s bed,” Rita said, a wicked smile on her face.

Darin went still, halfway done with the threads.  “Rita,” he said, his voice low, “I swear –”

Janiya’s face twitched into a smile.  She couldn’t help it, the combination of his tone with Rita’s growing smile was…

The pain tugged at her in the parts of her lips that were still sore and her smile subsided, but Darin’s consternation was gone, and he was looking at her with an emotion she couldn’t name.

“Just a few more,” he said quietly, “And then I’m done.”

Darin worked silently, pulling out each thread carefully, as Rita talked about the decorations they had already ordered for the carnival, and how Janiya’s fortunetelling booth would be set up.

When he was done, and had applied the cream on her bottom lip as well, Janiya wasn’t sure whether her tears were from the pain of her lips or the pain in her heart.

“You must be hungry,” Darin said as he cleaned up.

Rita broke off her detailed descriptions of the incense sticks to lean forward hopefully, “Ice cream?”

“Fine by me,” Darin shrugged, his eyes on her, “What about you, Janiya?”

Janiya wiped at her eyes, and the itchiness of dried tears on her cheeks, and finally met both their gazes.

“Ice cream sounds good.”

Fate Zero: Part Three

            Archer aimed two fingers at Berserker, energy building up into one potent shot.

            “Nothing shall remain of your corpse, boy…” He sneered as he abruptly fired at the insane Dragon Slayer.

             Just as swiftly, Natsu slid back into some flames – his movements momentarily obscured from everybody. When he emerged, it seemed at an awkward angle, but he did that several more times before anyone could dwell on it – traversing through flames as he agilely avoided Archer’s rapid-fire shots. Hades’s lips curled down in distaste as he also registered that Berserker’s fireballs had not dissipated… They were hovering in their original positions, undisturbed. He could only scoff as three of them soared at him at the same time – without missing a beat, he fired off a single shot into the center fireball, making it explode and consequentially setting the others off. His eye widened, however, when Berserker emerged from the wall of flames and smoke, fist smashing into Archer’s chest and sending him plowing back into the side of a large shipping container.

            Gray and Erza were boggling at the sight of Berserker actually landing a solid hit on Archer so soon. Gray was the only one able to find words to voice his shock, however.

            “The hell?! He’s even faster than the last time I fought him…!” Lancer huffed in frustration, feeling the demanding urge to go and pick a fight with that pyromaniac.

            Saber simply stood there, mouth agape, as her eyes followed Berserker’s every movement. Her mind registered what she was seeing… but she didn’t want to believe it. Natsu was here. A participant in the Grail War.

            ‘And he’s… Berserker…’ She thought to herself, grimly. She wasn’t certain what had led Natsu to be given that Class… but her heart definitely clenched at the implications.

            “I-I don’t understand…!” Waver stammered. “What happened?! It all happened so fast!”

            Gajeel had his arms crossed as his eyes narrowed.

            “You couldn’t tell what he did? He’s using the flames for short-distance teleportation. It’s a nasty trick he learned… near the end of his life…” Rider grimaced at the memory. He definitely wasn’t dwelling on that. Not now.

            “Sh-Should we help beat down Archer, while Berserker’s giving us an opening?” Waver asked uncertainly, to which Rider shook his head firmly.

            “Hell no… I’m not getting between those two. Hades is gonna be pissed, and that’s just gonna set that Pyro off even more… They’re the biggest threats here, aside from Titania.”

            “Didn’t you want to fight all the Servants?!” Waver was gobsmacked at the dark-haired man’s refusal to step in.

            “Those two ain’t gonna die so soon… Just look!” He pointed at Hades, who unleashed Amaterasu Formula 28 to keep Berserker at bay. The old man then formed a seal with his two hands.

            “For your impudence, I shall smite you…! Grimoire… Law!!!” Hades barked, focusing the dark energy forming between his hands into an orb, which shot out at Berserker. As the pink-haired man wasn’t in the vicinity of one of the flames on the ground, he was forced to hold his arms up in defense and tank the blast. He was sent careening back through a wall of a warehouse, making a loud, resounding crashing noise in his wake. Archer sneered at his handiwork. “Not so nimble now, are you, boy? Your parlor tricks will only get you so far!”

            “Hades…! Leave him alone…!” Lancer howled as he charged the old man, who weaved around the strikes of the lance or deftly blocked them. Saber and Rider were both caught off-guard by how defensive he was of Berserker, but given how they were all Guildmates in life… Regardless of their current status of enemies, they all used to be Fairy Tail. Seeing one of their own attacked so viciously… It just made Hades the priority target, that’s all there was to it.

            “Kid, you just stay right here with Lily…” Rider growled lowly as he morphed one arm into an Iron Sword. He then bellowed out a warcry as he charged at Archer as well, not even sparing Saber a glance as he passed her by.

            For Erza’s part, she was now standing rigidly in place as her eyes froze on the warehouse where Berserker had been launched into. Her mind was trapped in bewilderment as she asked herself how Natsu could be Berserker… What had compelled the Grail to bestow that Class on him? Why him? Out of everyone, he had deserved the most peace… in life and in death…

            But that wasn’t the case. And it bothered Erza to no end.

            “Bah… You boys have gotten weaker!” Hades harrumphed as he kicked Rider away without missing a beat and then used a chain that he materialized to latch onto Gray and hurled him into Gajeel for extra damage. “You are hardly worth my time…! I won’t even waste my Noble Phantasm as I finish you all off!”

            As Hades fired off more magical bullets at the quickly recovering Lancer and Rider, he was initially unaware of the fireballs that formed in the sky over his head. He looked up when the ground suddenly lit up in an orange haze, and he leaped away to avoid the initial barrage of fireballs that rained down in droves.

            Hades was not prepared for the explosion that followed their impact… None of the Servants present were prepared. Rider and Lancer got caught up in the explosion as well, and Erza and the Masters all looked on in morbid fascination. When the dust settled, Lancer was revealed to be in a crouched position, clutching his side; Rider was leaning back against a crate, also equally winded from being sent flying from the explosion. And Archer… He picked himself off the ground once it had all settled down, and he unleashed a massive wave of killing intent at Berserker, who was now crouched on top of a crate across from Rider.

            “I had thought that last attack had taken some wind out of your sails, but it appears you are in need of stronger discipline…!”  Hades prepared his Grimoire Law attack once more, but he grew uncharacteristically quiet and stiff. “Tokiomi… I do not think it is wise to retreat. At the very least, I must put this ravenous, wild dog down for presuming to strike me without consequence…”

            As Archer paused, clearly having a mental discussion with his Master, Erza’s gaze was locked on Berserker once again. A pair of fireballs hovered behind the pink-head’s shoulders, ready to fire at a moment’s notice, and his face was set in an animalistic snarl, eyes burning into the occupied old man. A man that looked more dissatisfied with each passing moment.

            “… Very well.” Hades killed off the energy going into his Grimoire Law. With a furl of his cape, Hades turned his back on Berserker. “It appears I will end things here for now, mad dog. You other Fairies! See to it that you quell your numbers by the next time we meet. I shall not waste my time on weaklings – I will wait for the strongest among you to challenge me.”

            At that moment, Berserker launched his fireballs at Archer’s back, but by then it was too late – the old man shimmered away, departing the battle. From atop the crane, Cobra rolled his eye at the “tactical” retreat.

            “Tokiomi just doesn’t want to reveal all his cards yet… Good idea, I suppose… But it does come across as cowardly.” Cobra muttered to himself.

            “Damn old fart…” Lancer cursed as he rose to his feet slowly. He twirled his lance around in frustration before pointing it straight at Berserker. “Oi! Flamebrain! You mind explaining all that just now?!”

            The Ice Mage didn’t appreciate getting blown to kingdom come. But Berserker’s attention wasn’t on Gray. Or on Gajeel. That honor belonged purely to Erza, whose eyes were now locked with his. No words were exchanged, but Erza could see flickers of emotions passing through his eyes at breakneck speeds… Emotions that greatly distressed her.

            She knew Natsu better than anyone, even better than Gray and Gajeel. Whoever had summoned Natsu had done something to him… But it was more than that. Despite the modifications, Natsu was still himself.

            … And he was hurting. Not from any physical wound or even anything recent… This was a deep-rooted, psychological pain. She was used to seeing Jellal have such a look in his eyes, but Natsu?

            ‘Natsu… What happened to you?’ Erza thought to herself, furrowing her brow in concern. Natsu had to know she wanted to talk… But it didn’t look like they had the time.

            “Enough, Lancer! Strike Saber down while she is vulnerable!” El-Melloi bellowed from the rooftop he was on.

            Gray gripped his lance tightly in frustration, gnashing his teeth.

            “Screw that…! I’m takin’ Flamebrain down first, and then I might go after Erza…!” He twirled the lance around again, charging it up with Mana. “I gotta get payback for that little bit of ‘friendly fire’ earlier…!”

            Lancer was stopped in his tracks, and it showed. His whole body twitched as some greater power kept him rooted in place.

            “I decide the order of things, Lancer… By power of Command Seal, I order you to use the full extent of your abilities and cut Saber down! Let nothing stand in your way!”

            Gray’s face became shadowed as the Command Seal compelled him to obey. His posture unsteadily straightened as he did a one-eighty and turned on Saber, hands curling into fists. From the shadows, Kiritsugu turned his full attention on El-Melloi.

            “Maiya, keep eyes on Assassin! I’m going to take out El-Melloi…!” His finger slowly curled around the trigger of his gun. The moment he was about to shoot, a single fireball obstructed his view of the Magus – an attack easily dodged by the blond, but the warning made clear.

            Berserker stood up straight, a wall of fireballs appearing behind him threateningly. Everyone was stunned into silence at the sight, and even Gray, who still felt the phantom urge of the Command Seal to attack Erza, had gone deathly still.

            “You Masters…” Natsu growled lowly. “Including everyone in the shadows… If you continue to interfere, you will all die. Every last one of you.”

            Natsu craned his head around, passing along the message that he knew each of their specific locations. Even Assassin, Maiya, Kiritsugu, who hadn’t been detected by the other Masters and Servants yet.

            “This is a fight between us. You get with that program, or I melt you to ash!” The Dragon Slayer’s face was stony, and left no room for argument.

            Grinning cockily, Rider got back on his feet and looked up in the general area where El-Melloi was biding his time.

            “You hear that, slimy bastard…? I think the Pyro’s gettin’ serious here. You stay out of it. And if you wanna try your luck… I’ll kick Ice Princess’s ass all over the pavement! With this damn Pyro gunning for you!”

            Berserker gazed down sharply at Rider at that declaration, but did not correct him. Gray dipped his head in shame at the turn of events… Not only because the others were stepping in while he was powerless, but because his new Master was being made a laughingstock.

            Erza, meanwhile, had recovered enough that she stood staunchly in front of Irisveil again, prepared to deflect any attacks Natsu made on her. She wasn’t sure if he would be aiming for her fake Master… But given how many fireballs were hovering in the air, she just couldn’t take the chance. Waver himself was cowering behind some crates, Panther Lily on standby to protect him, too. In the shadows, Kiritsugu and Maiya both elected to be as cautious and merely observe; not shoot to kill for the moment.

            “Tch… that stinkin’ showoff…” Cobra rolled his eye, but had to admit, Berserker definitely had the interlopers by the balls. If they decided to press their luck… the Grail War was going to see a few Servants get wiped out in one night.

            The threat worked, though.

            “Fine. Retreat for now, Lancer!” El-Melloi barked. Bitterly, the Master departed.

            Rather than look up at Berserker appreciatively, Gray looked up at the Dragon Slayer with an annoyed expression. He then turned his gaze to Erza and Gajeel, eyes softening.

            “Sorry about that, guys…” He sighed before his tone hardened as annoyance came over him again. “You humiliate my Master like that again, though, and I’ll kill you. Even if you did it so I wouldn’t be an honorless asshole…”

            With a deep sigh, Lancer faded from view. And now that it was just Saber, Rider, and Berserker, the tension lessened a little. However, Berserker didn’t stick around long. With his threat successful, the Dragon Slayer dismissed the fireballs and faded from the field himself. He spared one last look at Erza as he went, but Erza couldn’t decipher that one with how quickly he faded after that.

            “What a pain in the ass…” Gajeel grumbled, running a hand through his long hair. He then turned to Erza, a massive smirk on his face. “Listen, Erza! I know this kinda went to Hell pretty quick… But how about you and me form an alliance? Ice Princess’s got his lance shoved up his ass, and I don’t even know what’s goin’ on with the Pyro… But you and me? We could clobber ‘em and Hades!”

            A tense silence followed Gajeel’s animated proposal. It was harmless on the surface – they’d both been Guildmates in life, and it’s not like the others were moving to make offers of friendship, despite how close they all used to be.

            “Gajeel…” Erza muttered as she half-turned away from him, eyeing him shrewdly. “I’d like nothing more than to work together with all of you… But we can’t afford that luxury. This Holy Grail War… is fought until there is only one survivor to claim the Grail. And knowing that, I cannot agree to an alliance that would inevitably lead to backstabbing…”

            Rider’s smirk dropped, turning into a scowl.

            “Don’t gimme that load of horseshit… This is about fightin’ Salamander, and we both know it. You’re not gonna get through to him! He’s Berserker Class, for cryin’ out loud!”

            To the dark-haired Dragon Slayer’s credit, he didn’t back down when Erza’s eyes narrowed into slits. He stood his ground, but that didn’t make Waver – or even Irisveil – any better. This tense atmosphere might just explode, if any more pressure was applied…

            … At least that’s what they thought.

            “You know we used to think the same of you, back when you were in Phantom Lord. You even destroyed our Guildhall… But we took you in, and accepted you as one of our own.” She then walked by him as she took her leave. “Doesn’t Natsu deserve the same chance, even now…?”

            If nothing else, that succeeded in shutting Rider up – the dark-haired Heroic Spirit looking down in frustration and clenching his fists. Waver still cowered behind his Servant even as Irisveil ran after the scarlet knight, and Panther Lily looked up at his friend in concern. But the Iron Dragon Slayer was lost in thought now. Lost in his own memories

            And up above the lingering Servant and Master, Cobra sat atop the crane, similarly overwhelmed by memories…

            In the slums where Kariya had taken refuge, a small pillar of fire appeared before Berserker emerged, his cloak fluttering behind him. Despite the Dragon Slayer’s stormy countenance as he kept walking, Kariya fell into step behind him, hands shoved in his pockets.

            After a short stroll in silence, Kariya spoke up tentatively.

            “… Hey, Natsu… You knew her, didn’t you?” Kariya had felt that certain instincts in the Dragon Slayer were homing in on one individual, even as he fought Tokiomi’s Servant… But the instincts were at war with each other.

            … She had been someone precious to him. Kariya knew that with absolute certainty.

            “… all of them…”

            Kariya blinked as he’d barely heard that. The mumbling was nearly inaudible.

            “What?”

            “I knew all of them.” Natsu answered shortly. The heat around him intensified, but not enough to ignite a fire. “Hades… Gajeel… Gray… Cobra… and… Erza…”

            Kariya could hear Natsu painfully clench his fists, his throat tightening around the last name. There was a lot of anguish laden in his words, too. A lot of frustration and rage, too.

            … Because of course even now, the madness enchantment would cause his emotions to run haywire.

            “I see… so Assassin was there, too…” Kariya also deduced, based off the names given, that Natsu had detected another Servant present.

      ��     “I knew every one of them…” Natsu muttered hollowly, his pace not slowing in the slightest. “… And I still have to take them out…”

            Kariya’s eyes softened as he watched the back of the Dragon Slayer’s pink head.

            “… You don’t have to do anything you don’t want to, Natsu.” At those words, Natsu halted, and so did he. He spread out his arms emphatically. “Natsu, you saved Sakura from a life of suffering! You even spared me! If you don’t want to hurt them, then let’s ally with them instead! We can work something out…!”

            Natsu’s head dipped as he cut Kariya off – not heatedly, and not bitterly… He cut Kariya off with all emotion drained from him.

            “No. We can’t.” He shook his head numbly. “Seeing her… I don’t have a choice, Kariya. If I’m really gonna make things right… then even her…”

            Natsu trailed off so brokenly that it wrenched Kariya’s heart, listening and watching the Servant go on. He placed a hand to his chest firmly.

            “Natsu, if I use even one Command Seal, I’m sure that…!” He trailed off as Natsu looked at him with a broken, yet determined grin.

            “Kariya. There’s no saving me. Even if I win it all… Even when I get the Grail… I don’t matter. I never did. When you summoned me… I had just one wish. And I’m not letting anyone stand in my way of that wish. Not the Iceman, not Junkyard, not even that bastard Hades…”

            Kariya could feel a chill run down his spine as Natsu spoke his next words.

            “Failing to save her was always my biggest regret. So I’m gonna undo that failure, even at the cost of my life.”

He wasn't sure what would normally be prepared as a prize, but he did have something to give Angel regardless as he held out a gift-wrapped box. "Here'sss your reward."

Inside would be the soft stuffed pig that he'd crafted for Angel. Upon the box being opened, it would oink curiously up at the spider.

Penny paused in the middle of pouring his unexpected (but not entirely unwelcome) guest some tea. "Isss...there sssomething the matter?" he asked, sounding hesitant. He didn't really know what to make of the television sinner yet, and so he'd been playing it as safe as he possibly could; he didn't know what could set him off and he didn't want to risk finding out. His daughters weren't in the room, but occasionally one would peek in to make sure that things were still going well.

"My apologiesss, if you'd rather perussse the bookssshelvesss alone I can leave..." Though he rather hoped the other wasn't going to take advantage of his absence to steal some of said books. Vick didn't seem like the type, but one could still never be too careful.
