alright - ‘Orphan: First Kill’ immediate review:
disclaimer: I went into this movie with no trailers or prior knowledge other than having seen the first movie awhile ago.
also, let’s get this out of the way - it was never going to be as good as the first movie, which was iconic. & there was no vera farmiga so that’s automatic totally unfair points against this prequel. also, isabelle fuhrman is a conventionally beautiful adult woman & the film did what it could but she was never going to truly be believable as a 9 year old. in some ways that adds to the atmosphere maybe for some people. for me, it was always going to be unintentionally funny & an annoyance.
onto this movie 🍿🎥
*I did enjoy the dialogue & cinematography (some truly iconic lines & shots toward the end especially) & I was entertained. this movie was a lot of fun & I genuinely had a blast. I was sucked right in & barely distracted by my phone which is rare for me. so like. it passed the most important movie test - I had fun.
*right off the bat the movie did some really fun stuff showing leena’s asylum experience. there’s nothing in this life that I love more than a villain protagonist & it delivered there. I love leena. she reminds me of villanelle in a way - it’s the truly sociopathic blank tendencies paired with the knowledge that this character has deep trauma & a fantastic performance by the actress I guess!
*I would’ve liked the twist if it was set up just a tiny bit more cleverly. they could’ve done a few small things differently & this could’ve been really smartly set up. unfortunately, they tried a bit too hard to be surprising over smart & cohesive & it bit them in the ass & led to jarring & a bit dumb imo.
*that said I guess I liked the new characters. it just seemed like the writers couldn’t decide what they wanted to do. IF you’re going to introduce these new characters & their complex & interesting dynamics, dive into that. if you’d rather focus on leena, do that. the movie felt a bit disjointed & insecure to me - like it wasn’t sure it liked what it was doing, you know?
*also - again this goes back to me diving in with no prior knowledge because I’m about to criticize the very premise - leena is a very interesting character with a fascinating background. maybe they should’ve focused on her life in estonia, before the asylum. or they could’ve spent more time at the asylum. at least they could’ve done the plot twist sooner. my issue is that the movie spent a LOT of time rehashing the exact plot of the first movie. we get it, leena has daddy issues. maybe they could’ve shown her actual childhood & her dad to explain that in a prequel. there was no need to spend such a huge amount of time on leena thirsting after the dad which is exactly what the main focus of the first film is. like. we’ve already seen her do that. show us something new you know?
Anyway!
it seems like I hated the movie probably cause i do have some glaring criticisms lol
I really liked it though actually. I was entertained, I had a lot of fun, I just had ✨thoughts ✨
alright that’s all I have on that for now

ORPHAN :) <- the movie
never seen | want to see | terrible | boring | okay | good | great | a favorite
OOOOOHGMY GOD WHAT DO I THINK ABOUT ORPHAN 2009? im like the only person i know other than my bestfriend who likes this movie, and even further than that call it my favourite, and its because every part of it builds up so well to the reveal and final confrontation that no matter how many times i watch it i feel on edge. isabelle fuhrman solidifying herself as a horror icon age 12 makes it a masterpiece in itself, especially her work in the sequel, and even if i don't enjoy the way she's potrayed an adult woman all the times she's on screen (y'know... the nature of the movie and what not) i never feel like its explotive? like it does its job of making you uncomfortable because its what it wanted to do and did it right, but i'm never uncomfortable because i think isabelle was mistreated in any way. i'm really glad the use of blacklight and practical effects stuck around for the sequel, and the impact only increases in first kill BECAUSE of the limitations of using the same actress to potray a character younger than she was in the first movie. i think it was a really smart move. i love it

Orphan (2009)
Tumblr media
2009’s Orphan might not reinvent the “Demon Seed” genre but as an example of that story, I kind of love it. With plenty of dark humor, an excellent performance by Isabelle Fuhrman - who with a single movie becomes a horror icon - and a demented conclusion, this is one you won’t easily forget.
Kate and John Coleman (Vera Farmiga and Peter Sarsgaard) are recovering from the stillbirth of their third child. They decide to adopt and are immediately taken by Esther (Fuhrman), a 9-year-old Russian girl who behaves with an unexpected maturity and intelligence for her age. A series of incidents soon after makes Kate suspect her new daughter might be psychotic.
You can probably tell what’s going on with Esther from the movie poster alone but let’s not be too harsh. Audiences are going into this movie to see a diabolical 9-year-old. They won’t be disappointed. Esther is a terrific villain because she plays the part of an innocent little girl wonderfully. With her multitude of talents and charisma, who wouldn't want to adopt her? She’s got her share of eccentricities - like insisting on wearing certain outfits - but they aren’t so bizarre to set off any alarms. We learn quickly enough that something is off with the girl but every clue is shown only to one person at a time. You believe how long it takes the Colemans to realize what's going on because the family has a lot on their plate. Kate is a recovering alcoholic bearing a lot of guilt for the death of her unborn daughter and an accident that happened to Max not long ago. Maybe if John wasn’t such a terrible husband he’d help her out but you can tell if he isn’t having an affair now, it’s only a matter of time before he does. Daniel is kind of a bully and a bit of a brat while Max is deaf. When Esther shows an immediate affinity for sign language and essentially becomes Max’s new best friend, it’s no wonder she can a) manipulate the 5-year-old and b) gets on her brother’s nerves. While on paper 123 minutes seems excessive for a movie like this, there’s so much going on here it doesn’t feel like too much.
Maybe Esther would have a more difficult time playing the innocent card if her family wasn’t so dysfunctional but this psychotic little girl is a master manipulator. She’d be considered vicious regardless of her age and easily makes the best of whatever situation she’s in. Some people might say it’s cheap for a movie to put a 5-year-old in peril but the way “Orphan” does it… can I say it’s fun? In one scene, Esther pushes her younger sister on the road to get a car to stop. Either Max will get hit or her plan will work. It’s a win-win and the little demon does that sort of thing so well you kind of  admire her ingenuity.
A few aspects of Orphan strain plausibility and there’s a revelation about Esther’s drawings that while visually effective, is a bit much - even for a movie that gleefully dispenses with good taste like this one. Though much of this film you can categorize under “tried-and-true” (perhaps you might call it cliché) it does these things well and is fully committed to its demented premise. Even if you’re familiar with examples of this genre, from the lame The Good Son to classics like The Omen, Orphan has some surprises and great performances to carry you through the non-horror drama. Isabelle Fuhrman is terrific and the rest of the cast too. They’re given a lot to do and are much more than simply future victims for our pint-sized villain.
The reviews I’ve seen tell me you’re not guaranteed to love Orphan as much as I did. When I sit down to watch a horror movie, I want one of two things: genuinely scares or a story so unhinged it’s “scary” that someone thought of it. That’s what I got and I'm very very glad I did. Orphan: First Kill | 2022 | 1h39m | R
Esther is back for another slash, this time in a prequel to the 2009 "Orphan", will she become a horror icon and come out and play more times like the big boys, Leatherface, Michael Myers, Freddy Kruger and the others? I hope so, because Isabelle Fuhrman shines once more in this role, this time around alongside Julia Stiles who was exceptional as mother.
"Orphan: First Kill" is more brutal and gory, with a dark and blurry cinematography that creates an older movie feeling, but in part this was done to hide the fact that Isabelle Fuhrman is an older woman pretending to be a child. In my opinion, they did a better job with camera work and makeup in this movie, comparing to what they did with Eleven in the 4th season of Stranger Things with all the CGI.
As for the new twist, it catches us off guard at a point where the movie seems to be somehow following the footsteps of the original, but it turns itself around making us have different feelings about Esther.
The finale was predictable, because of what is told to us in the first movie, but it took a easy way out and could have done more justice to the rest of the movie.
"Orphan: First Kill" is the story of how Esther came to the U.S., and as far as the story goes it can't be done much after the final scene of the original, but we could get a good origin story for Leena Klammer (if that is indeed the real name of Isabelle Fuhrman's character), if they keep coming up with this interesting twists.
Directed by: William Brent Bell
Starring: Isabelle Fuhrman, Julia Stiles, Rossif Sutherland, Matthew Finlan, Hiro Kanagawa, Samantha Walkes
Genre: Horror, Mystery, Thriller

What's your favorite character from all across THG trilogy & TBOSAS?
Why do you like this character?
Favorite quote or moment from them?
Please state one (or more) thing which you don't like from them.
Thank you 😊
@curiousthg
so this is actually so hard. really difficult. there are just SO MANY to love tbh, and katniss and peeta, our two Mains, are really iconic. my ride or die is the career girlies, especially the d2 girls, and my favorite i think at the moment is clove even though enobaria's great... i mean, with enobaria and clove it's really hard to choose.
i love clove because while i loved the thg series for its worldbuilding and narrative and message, she's one of the characters i really connected to and first found interesting (although this only happened after i saw her being played by isabelle fuhrman in the movie). her name is really cool and i think it does indicate a lot about her personality, it's different and unique but also matches up with her image of Career Girlie and it's actually so her, yk. also i loved how isabelle fuhrman portrayed her, made her this fierce and violent small girl who can fend for herself and who's vicious when it comes to getting the games victory she wanted but at the end of the day was just an exploited kid who was fed a lie her entire life and then tricked into dying for that lie, for the glory.
and yeah she shouldn't have made fun of the death of a little girl, that was rough and uncomfortable, but literally moments later she also became a little girl who didn't want to die and that was just!! a lot. also if you look at my url you know that cato kneeling besides clove was the most impactful moment of the series. the careers, especially the girls, are just so interesting and tragically fucked up!! but clove is also so clever and vicious and angry and tiny and i love that about her, she really gave the energy that she'd make a good main character and have an even funnier/bitchier internal monologue than katniss.
