alrighty, it’s fresh on my mind for many reasons so I figured it was time to whip up a post to discuss how I function in terms to my way of writing for you. 

Obviously, this is a collaborative hobby. That means we both work together to provide a fun, fair writing experience. It takes two to roleplay, afterall! You get what you put out: if you write in paragraph format or multi-para, you will be getting a similar length reply from my end. When I write you a starter or answer a meme from you, I tend to write it in the writing format that I see the most of on your blog as I consider it your default formatting unless requested shorter or longer otherwise by the mun. While I understand that I can get long winded at times, I don’t expect you to match my length down to the exact sentence, but when you cut me short by entire paragraphs or two, I do get pretty frustrated. I already match your length, which often times is difficult for me when it comes to anything shorter than three paragraphs as there is way too much Arthur to cram into shorter threads, so if I’ve already shortened my default reply format down ( my default is three large paragraphs ) and I get a single or one and a half paragraph reply back from you in return, it really gets under my skin. If you were already replying with.. lets say two paragraphs in your replies to me and I wind up hitting you with 3 in my next reply, I do not expect you to match that as it’s my own expense as I know you don’t typically write that much. But if you’re going to give me a lot less than you recieved, then please don’t even bother with replying bc chances are, you’ve killed the mood for the thread entirely. Otherwise, you can always message me and let me know that we need to shorten the length and I will gladly do so because you asked: I don’t take well to sudden change that’s thrown onto me out of the blue and doing that changes the entire vibe of the thread when I spend hours writing a reply to you to get a few short sentences in return. I put in a lot of time, work, effort and dedication writing Arthur to the best of my ability for you and with me already matching your usual length, I feel like I’ve been duped when I get barley anything in return. The energy level plummets and I match the energy levels given to me so don’t expect much effort wise in my reply as I’m giving you exactly the same energy you tossed my way. Otherwise, don’t be surprised if your thread doesn’t get replied to at all. The moment I lose motivation for a thread, I drop as I can’t force myself to write something that I can’t even feel excited for so please, for the love out of everything holy, don’t jupe people out of entire paragraphs.  I’m not saying you HAVE to write lengthy things with me, but I write no less than one paragraph replies on this blog and if that’s all you want from me, that’s fine, but let me know if you need to change from lengthy to short if we’ve already been writing lengthy things or just simply don’t write me a mega lengthy starter / meme reply if you’re not going to want to keep up that same energy a few replies later.

Review for a DID… plushie?

Today I’m doing a very basic and important review on Plushie Dreadful’s Dissociative Identity Disorder Bunny

Which I bought because isnt it cute! Also I just had to, a bunny with DID? Sounds familiar.. 🤔

~initial thoughts~

I think you and I must be thinking the same: what an absurd thing to buy! A plush based off a trauma disorder? This could be offensive even if its coming from a weird place of stigmatizing disorders

I looked a little into the company though and found that they make a lot of different disorder-based plushies, as well as based on chronic illnesses and queer identities.

There’s also this note on the DID bunny page itself:

That's why our design team only creates plushies related to mental health issues with which they have direct experience. Obviously they go through a lot of widespread effort to have people with personal experience weigh in on their plush designs. Is it going to be suited to every person w a CDD’s tastes? Absolutely not, but I personally think they put a lot of care into it.

Heres some pics of the one I bought:

Its a fluffy white rabbit plush with wide, white eyes, and a grey bunny appliqué on the forehead. There’s the interlocking circles multiplicity pride symbol on the tummy. The arms are all white with grey paws, and the stubby legs are all white with pink paw pads. In the ears there’s soft fabric with the printed image of three bunnies stacked on top of eachother that are dark grey, reddish pink and white respectively. There’s a tote bag underneath the bunny plush with a design that matches the ears.

I think the plush design conveys the feelings of DID very well, actually. White eyes that could perhaps symbolize dissociating or looking frozen in terror. Black and red together are commonly associated with pain and trauma in art. White might be for the parts untouched by trauma, or healed.

They grey bunny stitched onto the forehead is..

Their Trauma Bunny

Its a grey rabbit plush thats small and has uneven limbs and ears. There are two red x’s on the tummy, a black x for the mouth, and downturned eyes depicting a pained expression.

Since this trauma bunny is literally stitched to the forehead if the DID bunny, it’s almost as if to say that trauma is a central feature of the DID itself; which I thought was a nice careful touch that could’ve easily been ignored and focused instead on the multiplicity aspect.

There’s obviously a lot of care and attention to detail put into this bunbun and I very much appreciate it

~How the Bun feels~

Texture: the main fur Soft with medium length, dense fur. It feels closer to the stuffed animals I had as a kid, compared to the super-soft and eventually pilly fur you get on buildabears and jellycat bashful bunnies. Only time will tell of course.

The fur on the ears is very soft with short, printed-on designs. I think its close to something like minky fabric, but shorter and thinner

Weight: idk, it doesn’t have any beanies in it so it’s lighter than I thought it would be. The ears don’t have stuffing/very little stuffing in them so they’re pretty weightless and floppy. Something I really like in bunny ears actually.

Ratings for…:

Playing with(moving the joints): 9/10 (the sewing is such that the arms and megs move easily yay!)

Holding the hand/paw of: 6/10 (the paws are a little small for me, the arms a little stubby for holding hands)

Sitting: 10/10 (the ears help it sit up on its own, the legs fold nicely and look very cute)

Standing: 3/10 (doesnt stand up very well)

Holding the ear of: 11/10 (super softie)

Holding like a hamburger: 9/10 (a smidge small but otherwise pleasent)

Snuggles against the chest: 8/10

Squishability: 5/10 (not a squishable but a very even amount of squishy and dense)

Appliqué: 10/10 (very neat stitching, unobtrusive)

Fur shedding: 10/10 (seems like its very stable and theres no shedding)

The previously described white DID bunny. There’s a grey small bashful bunny with multicolored flower print in the ears on the left. On the right, there’s a navy blue medium sized bashful bunny. The DID bunny is slightly smaller than the medium bashful bunny

~ Extra thoughts idk what to do with~

- I don’t know the history of the interlocking circles symbol or if its problematic in any way. I’m assuming its something the community decided on when contributing feedback on the initial design. Thoughts? It seems to have to do with the old DID forums from a time before I knew I had DID, so I’m intrigued by the history

- I don’t personally mind that theres a DID-themed plush out there. Might not be everyone’s cuppa tea but it makes me happy to have a little soft companion for watching movies and reading books with. Its a really neat aspect to my growing DID collection :D

- I’m so fond of the scenecore kinda design for these bunnies. As a kid I desprately wanted a bunny with that gothic lolita, stitched up aesthetic and this is just so cool and special to me now :>

- I’m super sorry if the image descriptions arent great! This is a personal just-for-fun blog so I dont think I can manage something like that for all my reviews, but since this ones very visual I thought I’d try. Just sorry if its not good :( if theres anyone who’s like to rewrite them to actually work I’d be willing to replace my descriptions

- she needs a name! If you have name ideas i would love to hear them. Something DID related perhaps! i might run a poll on this for fun :D

as we have oft discussed, yata is a man we have all met at one point in our lives. so, yata has the basic boring man pajamas. t-shirt that’s too big for him but he forgot to return it, and seasonal pajama pants. the pants always seem to mismatch the season, he wore the snowflake ones during summer, and now he’s wearing the halloween ones in winter?

the shirt itself is also mundanely mysterious. nobody can really place the logo on it, and he doesn’t really remember where he got it from either. it doesn’t bother him too much until it’s pointed out to him

The Wardens: Left to Right.

Suibhne Tabris, the pragmatic & polite rogue whose always up to teach folks the old alienage proverb of 'no child of Adaia Tabris makes empty threats'. Push him if you dare. He's my technically canon warden and the leader of Origins ragtag group. Mainly because he's very stoic and chill. Mhm. He was left at the Chantry as an infant before the Tabris family adopted him. He loves his family dearly, and took Adaia's death very hard. Like he didn't speak for years after and people feel like he ended up as very muted version of his chaotic child self. But grief can change you, and that's okay. He romances Zevran (utterly smitten~), Morrigan is basically his sister, is the one that does the Dark Ritual, and he'd love to meet his son but respects Morrigan's wishes to keep away. He's just a chill sweetheart who will murder a whole castle of nobles to save his loved ones~. I love him. c: <3

Nari Aeducan, the iconoclastic & favored former princess of House Aeducan. Oh, Bhelen. You can keep the throne but you will never feel safe within the walls of Orzammar again. <3 Nari is... my newest Warden, and not super fleshed yet. She lost her eye in her childhood during a training match, and asked Daddy Dearest to get her a lyrium prosthetic eye. Because it neat. In my canon, she misses out on meeting Duncan and gets to roam around the Deep Roads until the Origins group finally stumbles over her like two months later? She's a survivor~~~ She also enjoys sweetly terrorizing her baby back-stabbing brother. <3 No idea who she'd romance, honestly? Probably no one. Her mind is just set on causing chaos in Orzammar. Bless her.

Raniel Surana, the tempestuous and diligent mage that lasted like four days outside of the circle before she turned to blood magic. To be fair, she was dying at the time & Mouse is cool. Raniel was my very first Warden~~~ Sooo. Her and Tabris both met Duncan before going to Ostagar, and she's both enthralled and terrified and so bitter at Jowan, so she's just bouncing in every direction. During the first fight, the orge atop the Tower bites off her arm and Rani, not wanting to die with her new friends, asks Mouse for help. She's Super Bitter and Pissed for most of the story, as losing your home and arm will do to someone. No one really questions the weird white mouse that travels on her shoulder. But Leliana and the others sloooooooowly bring back her old romantic self. Stories and stars do the soul so much good. She ends up as the Teryna of Gwaren, is a happy little blood mage and since Leliana is my canon Divine, is basically married to the highest religious figure in Southern Thedas. Go Raniel~~~~

I never got as attached to my Hawke as my Wardens or Inquisitor (weird as DA2 is my favorite game so far), buuuuuuut this is my current one.

Revelry Hawke, the stepford-smiling put-upon third parent of the Highly Dysfunctional Hawke family. All they wanted in life was to keep their family together and safe, and they Failed! Constantly! Carver died in Lothering! Bethany died in the Deep Roads! Leandra died in Kirkwall! And Revelry blames themself fully. :'D They're technically a rouge, but personal headcanon is they have magic too but just for Entropy spells and this goes unnoticed by all until the Arishok stabs them in Act Two. Losing one's family does have a way of letting you let go of a lot of things, does it~~? Forever sides with the mages, I do imagine they got offered the Viscountship post-game (because it's dumb that's Templar-locked) but Revelry stepped down after like five days. They're known as the Five-Day Viscount now. And they, idk, probably ended up in a polycule with everyone accidently. That seems like a very Revelry thing to do. o:

Do I have a favorite protag of the lot? Yes, it's Mir. :D

Mir'uvenan Ruoho Lavellan, aka Mir, aka Miracles, my beloved and endlessly chaotic Inquisitor. Left his clan because of his toxic and deeply codependent relationship with his twin brother, Mir is basically a shattered mosaic of trauma, impulse and passion. He doesn't know why he's here, he wants to burn the Chantry to the ground and steal its foundation to boot, and people are! Praising him?!? Him? Why! Whhhhhhhy!?! He's not a leader! TToTT!! Except, that's all the gaslighting talking. Mir is stupidly clever and intelligent, endlessly caring and absolutely has no issues telling off Ancient Tevinter Gods and their Fake Archdemons. He lost all his fucks when he got the Anchor, so fuck it. He'll do his best because he's kinda stuck here anyways. TT____TT

Mir's an absolute little nerd who adores mixing his own alchemical concoctions because smashing highly volatile flasks against his skin is just Heaven~~~ He ends up losing his hearing Quite A Bit because of all the explosions, but whatcha gonna do~? Dagna and Rocky teached him Dwarven Sign Language to help. He likes hanging around Dagna to learn magic in the non-magic way too because It's Fascinating! o: <333

Mhm. Romances Bull but it's pretty open. Sera is his BFF, and Dorian a close second. Never gets comfortable being the Herald or the Inquisitor, doubly so after the Jaws of Hakkon, triply so after Trespasser. He disbands it, and is happier for it just being a Red Jenny with Sera and just finally enjoying life at long last with a good support system of friends and connections. I always play the game as Mir slowly working through his miserable self-worth and healing through all the trauma his brother put him through, so I like him ending the game having more neutral-positive outlook. He is actually Not The Worst, and ain't that nice? c:

(He's still gonna punch Solas in the face if they meet again tho. Because friends don't let friends destroy worlds, and he already proved people are just as worthwhile now as long ago.)

Considering how basic Frisk's sprite is, what made you design them the way they are?

i’ll talk about both chara and frisk here asfjllasdf similar sprites and all

chara has more red-ish tones because of the red-soul trait, just as the other kiddos got influenced by it. my chara when unaffected by that, has a more yellow-tinted brown than their canon reddish brown. (similar to toriel’s dark red eyes, funnily. actually, just checked. chara’s is slightly less red and is lighter tinted. dang.) then after becoming a flower, chara’s new form is gold tinted, so the hair is more amber. still very much brown, so it can be read as just their natural color instead.

anyway, if you compare face shapes chara’s face is more oval while frisk has chubby cheeks poking out. (tho, i guess you could read it the other way around? that chara’s face is fuller while frisk’s face is slender?) but otherwise the only difference is the clothes, colors and bangs. frisk has a lot more messy look asdfjklasdf poor kid... doesn’t care about their hair...

speaking of which, I made frisk black because I know yellow-skin frisk is bad and I’m not getting into that can of worms right now, nor do I feel really equipped to talk about it as I’m white. I’ve heard many asian fans talk about frisk’s og sprite resembles a racist caricature, and it really sucks! i can dig up links to where people have talked about this if anyone really needs to see it discussed, otherwise it’s not my place to talk on length on it. I can only share actual asian people’s voices on the topic. 

but ye back to the design. i don’t got pics on me rn because i’m lazy, but in the collector’s edition we get a full drawing of chara and frisk respectively (not including the face of course)-they look dang near identical. which is a shame since Asriel says they don’t really look a like at all. in those artworks they have a really loose big shirt (sweater?? looks more shirt to me but idk) which make enough sense but is pretty boring. plus, we clearly see frisk’s shirt and pants are one garment in the overworld sprite. 

and while yes, i suppose that collector’s edition counts as merch AND we see frisk in the UT 5th anniversary Famitsu cover with pants that clearly separate from the shoes. so its not even that temmie is consistent with the outfits asdfljsadf

anyway I reasoned the dark part of their shirt can be an undershirt and the onsie-ness is overalls. i don’t like the idea of frisk wearing the same blue of the overalls as their undershirt (as the ow sprite is the same blue all over) as its not easy to really exact-color match clothes. so its a slightly warmer/darker blue while the overalls are a bright pastel blue. that’s really all the reasoning i had with the design, i tried to keep true to the sillohete, just as I do for Chara. (though Chara is more fancy/formal, as they’re trying to be more impressive/a good little angel)

You stepped into the stadium with knee pads, helmet, and mouth guard being the most prominent things on your body

First of all, Nohebi was shook to the core, like their jaws dropped

Kuroo is snickering because that’s one way to catch you rivals off guard and if they’re off their game, that’s a plus for us

Yaku makes his way over to you and clicks his tongue while tightening your helmet

Goshiki was full out panicking and his voice went three octaves higher

The swarm of huge men around your tiny marshmallow form was quite a sight and your coach was completely annoyed by the team’s reaction

But you didn’t mind (even though you were teary-eyed and red as hell)

I’m 17 (04 liner), 176cm tall (I think that’s 5’9’’) and I’m an enfp. my “big six” are aries sun, taurus moon, gemini rising, aries mercury, taurus venus and gemini mars. Honestly it was so hard to not just give you one of your stans, because I’m hardcore for “anyone can be in love, because love knows no bounds!” And I can see you with Tsuki for some of your characteristics, but I already wrote some Tsukishima x you stuff (but I’ll include some more down below ;) ). So I tried to pair you with someone I think you’d be a good fit with, but also someone unique. So I was trying to think of someone who would really compliment your interests, and so I went for Sugawara! I may be imprinting because I love his character so much, like how he’s an angel but also play with the minds of the other volleyball teams. The way they’re intimidated by him is MWAH, he’s sly and cunning despite being a huge teddy bear. He’s one of my faves and I know he’d treat you well <3 <3 <3

·         Suga is like the best friend you could ever ask for; he’s so sweet, caring, and attentive. Soft boy is always there being the mom friend.

·         When you need help communicating he will do his best to make it an easy situation. If you need him he’ll just be your voice, but if you just need him to be around for comfort he’s happy to see you try and talk in a situation you may usually be too shy to do on your own.

·         He is drawn to you because of your culture and smarts, since you don’t stand out in a crowd based on your description of a minimal style I assume he see’s your name somewhere on tested post scores or! OR Maybe you’re in the cultural club in college? Just a random thought I’m sorry.

·         You don’t have to be good with people to get along with him, he’s easy going and can usually read a person and knows what you mean even if you say the wrong set of words.

·         Once you start coming out of your shell he’s so happy to get to know the “real” you, your sarcasm, your interests, and your selfless nature- he’s happy to see you open up.

·         He too is quiet and witty, but that’s more so because he likes to listen more than he likes to talk, when it comes to dishing out the roasts. So he’s supportive of you whenever you decide to be sassy, agreeing with you and slyly remarking about how correct you are, complimenting how well you read people.

·         Suga stands by what he believes, too, which one of those things is happens to be you <3

·         He’s patient so he’s not going to jump straight into physical affection, not wanting to make you uncomfortable and willing to respect your boundaries. And once you’re ready for him to be more affectionate he goes slowly, testing the water.

·         Unlike Suga, he’s only slightly helpful when interacting with others, I feel like he doesn’t find it necessary to be involved in all conversations- if you’re too nervous to approach someone it may not be worth the conversation in the first place. That being said, if it’s because it’s a very important interaction and you’re nervous because of the gravity of it he will help by either intervening or saying what needs to be said, or he will stand by your side and nod as you make conversation. (What I mean is maybe it’s a group project and you don’t know your partner and he needs be there to help you not panic.)

·         He’s pretty withdrawn himself so if he doesn’t have to get involved in social situations he won’t because most people seem to frustrate him.

·         Tsuki is the king of sass so when you’re being witty and sarcastic he’s by your side smirking and making snide comments of his own. And the same can be said when you’re standing up for someone you believe in, even if he doesn’t have the same passion he’s there to support you by providing some smug comments.

·         Style doesn’t mean very much to him, so your minimalist style won’t bother him, but I don’t think he’d point it out either way. He’s more interested in complementing you on your personality and interests rather than how you dress or decorate.

·         He shares your love for music, so feel free to send him some song recommendations; he will do the same for you. This little nerd may act like he’s not interested in your music but if he ever needs to be reminded of you he has the songs saved because you told him about them and so now he associates you with those songs.

·         This tall dinosaur will just rest his arm on your shoulder the moment you get used to his touch; he’ll pull you close because “it’s cold outside.”

·         He will just try to avoid getting into situations that make you anxious, because he knows he’s not always the best with reassuring words. But you know he cares because he tries, despite being uncomfortable seeing you so upset and not being able to stop it.

disappointing: 

red velvet - psycho, bad boy, and power up (queens of interesting and unique concepts but these ones just felt very...easy for them? like they weren’t as special as almost all of their other songs to me? this is just me but i prefer when groups experiment and you get a ~controversial~ song rather than them just doing something basic that’s easy for the gp? like i respect it as a strategy but rv has proved time and time again that they’re better than that so i was pretty disappointed in these songs. full disclosure i still listen to bad boy sometime though lmao)

seventeen - fear/ an ode/247 ( i’ve talked about this at length before but seventeen is my favorite bright concept boy group because they manage to do it without it being overly cute and nauseating. their choreo quality also doesn’t change at all and i find that to be really refreshing. fear isn’t my style at all but mostly i just didn’t want fear from svt? like they did super well with it i just don’t know that i would say it plays to their strengths. also, the whole album was kinda disappoint for me but the most disappointing part was that performance team did a ballad. like i understand them wanting to show their other talents and i commend them but. i wanted a dancey thot bop. on the bright side we did get network love which saved this album for me personally.)

onlyoneof - heartbreak theatre (it’s produced by cha cha malone and you can tell he gave them something from the trash pile. ooo do all these cute videos with their producers where they vlog the process and the pd talks about their thought process in creating the songs and about the boys and it’s really really nice to hear their perspective but cha cha is the only one who didn’t film one and you can literally hear why in the song. it’s so obvious that he didn’t really try to understand their sound and it’s their only song that actively takes away from their discography.)

wayv/nct’s song comeback is better in mandarin but i’m hella biased so

Rose! How do you feel about Emma and its various adaptations?

Sorry for the delay in answering - blame the school trip!

I love Emma. I wrote my dissertation partly on it (also on Northanger Abbey, Rob Roy and St Ronan’s Well) and while I loved it before I loved it even more after studying it. All of Austen’s novels are extremely well plotted, but Emma might just be the best. It’s like a detective novel in that respect (and has been described as such on multiple occasions) because you can pick up on clues to what’s really going on all the way through but on a first read, you don’t see them. Miss Bates unintentionally reveals details that can be explained by Frank and Jane’s secret relationship but they are hidden in her verbal overloading. Emma’s own thoughts betray her unknown interest in Mr. Knightley, and his actions point to his love for Emma. And so on. 

Jane Austen is also being radical in her use of literary conventions and genre in Emma (as she is in basically all her novels). She has the tightest mystery plot ever written at this point hidden directly inside a novel that sticks strictly to the conventions of romantic comedy. She even goes overboard with it - successfully navigating three couples to appropriate happy endings. However, within that solid structure, she plays with expectations and conventions in a subtle way and this is where I get really excited.

First we have Emma herself, a heroine “nobody but myself will like”. Austen clearly loved questioning and pushing conventions of who was allowed to be a heroine. Her previous novel, Mansfield Park, gave us Fanny who most people at the time found disappointing after Elizabeth Bennet and modern readers (unjustly IMO) hate, and she followed Emma with Anne Elliot who was far too old to be a romantic heroine according to contemporary standards. In the middle we have Emma Woodhouse, a meddling snob. She’s got a lot in common with Mr. Darcy actually and her character development in terms of recognising the bad behaviour she is guilty of and the prejudice she feels towards those of a lower social status is pretty similar. But while Darcy and his character development is held up as beautiful and heroic and romantic, Emma is frequently condemned as dislikable. I do wonder why that could be… Personally, I love Emma. She’s clever and shrewd and funny and, honestly, is there anyone who doesn’t think Miss Bates is annoying and doesn’t want to throw a tantrum at the prospect of being upstaged by Mrs. Elton? Are you, dear reader, such a paragon of rational enlightenment and charitable feeling? Would you instantly see through Frank Churchill and resist his flirtations? Would you be best friends with Jane Fairfax and not be just a little bit jealous of her and how much Mr. Knightley everyone seems to admire her? Have you never said something cutting and regretted it? Are you perfect, reader, ARE YOU? Come on. Emma is one of us. She messes up, she judges badly, she says cringeworthy stuff in inappropriate situations, she gives bad advice - she’s human. And she deals with it without losing her positive outlook and she does grow, enough to “deserve” her happy ending (though that’s a loaded concept) but not so much it’s unrealistic. And what makes her likeable through it all are that her intentions are good. Emma is not a bad person who has to become good and “be redeemed”. She is a fundamentally warm and caring person who needs to have some bad habits of thought and action corrected by guidance and experience. Emma’s intentions and understanding are good from the beginning.

Emma’s also interesting because, yes, she does change, but if you put her in the context of the genre she inhabits, she also gets to keep a lot. Basically, in another novel, Emma would have to pay significant penance for her bad behaviour before she would be allowed to marry Mr. Knightley and she would have to prove that she is a changed woman and is absolutely not going to continue meddling and will be a good and submissive wife. Usually this also involves giving up the dangerous reading of novels which have led her astray. Several points. Firstly, Emma is not a novel reader, she is a novel writer. Emma is described by various critics as “an avatar of Austen the author” and if you read the novel through the prism of Emma being an author, things become really fascinating. Beautiful, illegitimate Harriet Smith is the heroine of Emma’s novel and obviously Emma-as-author wants to discover that she is really the long lost daughter of Somebody and give her a socially advantageous marriage. Emma’s matchmaking attempts are the workings of a novelist plotting with characters. Emma is creating her own world. This is radical stuff, in a society where female novelists were looked down upon. Emma has the means and independence and cleverness to write a story of her own - and she is comically bad at it. This is one way in which Austen plays with genre. Secondly, it is not at all clear that Emma does give up her matchmaking at the end of the novel. Austen is coy when she floats this suggestion about Mrs. Weston’s daughter: “[Emma] would not acknowledge that it was with any view of making a match for her, hereafter, with either of Isabella’s sons”. Does this suggest that maybe Emma isn’t as cured as she should be? Thanks to Austen’s levels of irony it’s impossible to tell, which is the point. Thirdly, Emma is the only Austen heroine to have real financial and social clout. Emma really does rule Highbury and at the end of the novel, instead of being subsumed into her husband’s world, he in fact moves in with her (however temporarily). This is practically the Regency equivalent of her keeping her name after marriage. She and Mr. Knightley are social equals and she does not leave her home or her sphere of influence when she marries. The only other heroine this would be true of is, interestingly enough, Fanny Price. But Mansfield Park is notoriously inward looking and Fanny’s ending allows her to truly become a Bertram which is what she wanted all along for better or worse. And Fanny and Edmund’s social status and influence are much less significant that Knightley and Emma’s are.

Something else to bear in mind when thinking about Emma’s character is that, despite her social power and wealth, she also lives an extremely confined and limited life. She is essentially a carer for her stultifying and claustrophobic father. She has never left the environs of Highbury. She is surrounded by people who jump to her every command and shower her in praise, both deserved and undeserved. The only person who criticises her is also in love with her. The only eligible men in her world before the arrival of Frank Churchill are her brother-in-law who is 16 years older than her, and the obsequious vicar. Yes, she can remain a spinster but even a rich spinster cannot maintain the sort of power she currently holds when faced with a married woman like Mrs. Elton (who is a real threat to her), but her alternatives are bleak. A woman of her rank and fortune should be having a London season and meeting other young people of her rank and forming external connections. Because of her father’s passive control over her, Emma has none of these opportunities. Even Fanny Price travels more and meets more people than Emma does. Yes, Emma Woodhouse is handsome, rich and clever and has had very little to vex her, but I suspect that is probably Emma’s own view of her life and it is not necessarily accurate.

Okay, this post is already far too long so I’ll end my discussion of the novel here. There’s also a lot that could be said about Jane and Frank, Emma and Mr. Knightley’s relationship and more, but Emma is clearly the most important and, honestly, the most in need of defence!

Onto the adaptations, and I’ll try to be brief:

1. The Gwyneth Paltrow film. Jeremy Northan is divine though his hair could be better and he’s not my favourite Mr. Knightley, even if I do have a massive crush on JN. Harriet Smith is a not particularly attractive redhead which is… weird. Frank Churchill is Ewan McGregor but he has appalling hair so IDK what was going on there - such a missed opportunity. Gwyneth Paltrow as Emma is a casting disgrace and I honestly can’t bear to watch this film because every time she is on screen I cringe. The producers were more interested in the aesthetic than making a good adaptation. My grandma hated it. Enough said.

2. The Kate Beckinsale film. Honestly, I don’t dislike anything about this except that I wish it were a mini-series and the proposal scene is a bit… eh. But I think it manages to stay true to the book in a feature film and I love Kate Beckinsale’s Emma. She has the right mix of liveliness and arrogance for me. Mark Strong is a stern Mr. Knightley but he’s not too handsome. Frank Churchill is perfect in this adaptation. Controversially, this is my favourite period adaptation.

3. The Romola Garai miniseries. I love lots about this mainly because the length allows everything to be expanded suitably. Johnny Lee Miller is the best Knightley by far. The Eltons are fabulous. Frank and Jane’s relationship gets more time dedicated to it. The Westons and Bateses are great. Harriet Smith is dumbed down too much - she’s naive and not too bright but this adaptation makes her practically an idiot, almost as much a disservice as the 2005 P&P film’s character assassination of Bingley, though physically the actress is perfect and she’s very likeable. And I really do appreciate what they were trying to do with Emma. It was clearly an informed choice to make her bubbly and often silly and a chosen interpretation of the text and I respect that - better that than wilful misinterpretation which some adaptations go in for. I fundamentally disagree with it - whatever her faults, I don’t think Emma is silly and giggly and I struggle to believe this Emma is a 21 year old woman secure in her position as a social leader. Her mannerisms often come across very modern - her little waves, giggles and posture and this is very irritating because Romola Garai has done some fantastic period acting (Daniel Deronda, The Hour etc.) and these mannerisms aren’t consistent across the cast. I love Romola Garai and I think it’s an interesting choice of direction, but not one that rings true to how I see the character though.

4. Clueless. Clearly the best adaptation of Emma ever made. We all know it.

5. Emma Approved. Only seen a bit of it and didn’t warm to it. Should probably give it another go. Why did they change Knightley’s name to Alex? What the hell is wrong with George!?!?

Anyway, here are my thoughts on Emma. Hope they’re at least somewhat interesting. There is nothing I like better than rambling on about Jane Austen! :-) Thank you for giving me the opportunity!

hufflepuff-rave, abuse, and the missing husband thing: from her ex friend’s point of view

this is about whole “abusive wife”/”missing husband” situation, and what i know about mel (dillon’s abuser and wife) through being her close friend for 5+ years. it’s a long post, so there’s your warning.

here’s another ample content warning for abuse, misgendering, gaslighting, and general...drama? i guess? here we go kiddos!

after this post, particularly with this reblog went pretty viral both on here and on facebook recently, i figured it was my time to step up along with my friend, @jackstoney , and personally come out in support of all of the abuse accusations that have been made against mel, as i was one of her closest friends for 5+ years.

as jack did in his post, i’m simply going to be referring to her as “mel” because i would prefer that she NOT get stalked, harassed, doxxed, etc. as i said, i used to be her friend, and thus i still do have some regard for her and her mom’s personal safety and privacy despite the fact that they’re bad people.

to make my stance on dillon himself quite clear from the outset, i was always fed really varying information about him from mel herself. as exhibited by her blog, if you go and search “dillon” and scroll back a bit far, you’ll see that she has wildly varying, black and white perspectives about him. that’s how it was when we talked, and that’s how she is about seemingly everyone; particularly her ex boyfriends. if you search “brayden” or “jackson” on her blog, you’ll get pretty similar posts. the point is that i don’t know what’s true or false about dillon’s life and personality, i just know the information she’s told me or that i’ve seen on her facebook or tumblr. as i said, we were friends for 5 years, and i knew her before she ever met dillon.

as jack explains pretty sufficiently in his post, which i linked above, mel has a very obsessive, very clingy and overbearing personality, and a high probability of mental illness associated with the drastic lengths she’ll go to to keep someone trapped in really any kind of relationship with her. THIS IS NOT INHERENTLY A BAD THING. i’m not a professional, and i won’t make an armchair diagnosis based on what i know about her, but i will say that she’s never mentioned to me anything about trying to improve and work beyond her numerous issues. (unlike how she is presently trying to pin a schizophrenia diagnosis on dillon after only speaking on the phone to a doctor herself, ONCE.)

i felt this way when i was friends with her, very much so. this sideblog of hers, particularly these three posts (1 , 2 , 3) are about me, and the fact that, while we were friends, i decided to do matching icons with my still-current boyfriend on facebook. this happened on a couple of occasions because we found neat looking icons and, since we were, yknow, partners, we figured it’d be cool to match for a couple weeks. as you can see by the posts i linked, mel didn’t like this. at all

here’s another sideblog of hers that she made for dillon to post about her...let’s just call it unhealthy obsession, as shown pretty well by this particular tag. WARNING: some very nsfw stuff is on here

here are a few texts i have from her to me talking about how, despite having NEVER ONCE spoken to my boyfriend and actively refusing to talk to him even though i said i’d like them to meet, she’s extremely “possessive” of me

little unimportant note: she refers to herself as kyle and me as stan because she was really into south park, and she saw those two characters as having a similar relationship to ours

coming from a person who has bpd (me), this all, to me, rings very familiar and relatable bells in my head. keep in mind i’m not accusing her of having it, but coming from someone who is very overprotective of their friends and datemate(s) (frank and i are poly), this all sounds like the reasoning my brain tries to do with itself when anyone befriends a person who gives me “bad vibes”. the thing is that i don’t actively silence my friends or whoever from talking about a person that makes them happy just because of the fact i don’t know them. this is something she NEVER tried to avoid doing. she was always upfront with me about how much frank unnerved her, despite never meeting them and ignoring their attempts to try and assure her that they weren’t trying to take me away.

the following screenshots are about the decision jack made to break up with her shortly after he’d gone back to california to try and look for a job (his post has more necessary context, but the idea is that he was basically trying to make more efforts to get his life to be stable and not go completely broke, and needed to break up with her seeing as her clinginess made him incredibly worn out).

unfortunately, i don’t have that message i sent to the group chat anymore, and i’m afraid i don’t remember what i said, but i know it was a pretty long message about how her coping methods to get over jack (i.e.; getting back with dillon) wasn’t actually helping her and i could see her mental state going to shit

now would also probably be a good time to mention some of the other things she’s done, but i don’t deem to be as relevant to this particular situation such as purposefully misgendering me (using the wrong pronouns, calling me her “sister”, making and getting me heavily gendered gifts she knew i was uncomfortable with), and frequently trying to make people stop talking about their interests and focus on ONLY hers instead, at all times. i do have screenshots of one particular instance of this, but this post is long enough and i feel that those complaints about her character would detract from the main point

long story short, as i’m sure you all are confidently aware at this point, mel is a horrible, manipulative, abusive, and toxic person and SHOULD be avoided at all costs. though I myself am concerned for dillon’s safety at the moment, as no one’s really quite sure where he is, I think that ultimately he would’ve been more unsafe if he stayed with her, judging by these screenshots of his brother’s comment on mel’s facebook post:

i’m very happy that dillon chose to try and run and escape. i’m concerned for his safety right now but i hope he turns up soon, safe and sound, and away from mel forever.

i’d like to personally apologize to dillon, if he ever ends up reading this post somehow, for being extremely judgmental and distrustful of him because of the information mel was feeding me. i don’t know how much of it is true or untrue, but despite everything, i hope you find peace wherever you choose to go. i’m happy you got out. i’m proud of you, i’m proud of jack, i’m proud of myself, and i’m proud of anyone who chooses to break away from an abuser to start over. it’s hard, but you can fucking do it.

Yup! No idea what they’re like, but we can’t be the only life in the universe!

Love is hard to define~ you can love something, and you can be in love with something. Love is when something/someone makes you happy, when they make your heart race and your face light up. It’s when you’d go to lengths to help someone or make them happy. It’s really hard to describe, something we’re really clueless to. After all, they say, love is blind~

3. Are love and hate opposites? If not, then what do you think is the opposite of both?

Love and hate are both opposites and they are similar~ they’re opposites in which one is positive (questionable?) and the other is negative. once again, since I can’t define love I can’t really judge them. there’s a fine line between love and hate is all I’ll say~

4. Is war justified? Or do you think peace is the better answer?

It really depends on what war is about; if it is for true justice I believe it is. Peace is definitely the better answer. What a paradox, when you can choose to wage war for peace~ 

5. Do you think global warming is real?

I definitely think global warming is real. The world is in danger and nobody seems to really be doing anything...

6. If you could go back in time and undo all the things that mankind has done to damage the Earth, including things like the creation of everyday goods, technology, etc., would you?

I wouldn’t, this is a tricky question though. I love technology and everyday goods now, or how would I have met you wonderful people reading this? Though if mankind didn’t exist at all of course I’d want Earth to be restored~

7. Name one historical figure you respect and why.

Damn I really need to brush up on my history, I don’t know many. I’ll say Maya Angelou because I recently researched her in English and I think she’s a really strong and brave person with a great sense of justice. (idk if she counts as a historical figure)

8. Do you think humanity is more bad than good or the opposite?

Wow, once again another deep question! It can be both good and bad, it depends on who most of humanity is and how you see it. It’s pretty horrible but there are a few things about humanity that make it better~

9. Do you believe in soulmates? Fate/Destiny?

I believe in fate/destiny, but also that you can control what paths you take in your destiny! Soulmates.. I don’t believe that there is someone who is “your other half” or “meant to be together”, but I do think you can find someone out there who is perfectly (not so perfect) matched with you who will truly make you happy~ that’s what I call a soulmate.

10. Do you think time-travel can be achieved? Would you want to go into the past or the future?

Maybe far in the future it can, but time doesn’t seem like something you should mess with anyways. If I had too, I’d pick future... maybe find out the lottery numbers or something ;)

Not a huge marvel fan but I love Iron Man all the way~ (i’m sorry marzy both of those answers probably just crushed your soul) I have watched some marvel movies and I really do like them and the characters but I’m just not a huge fan~

I don’t read or watch much of both but I believe whichever one came first (most of the time). With anime I like watching the show but if I REALLY like it I’ll check out the manga as well~

I do! Some people really get it so accurate it’s spooky. I’m a pisces~

5. What is the first thing you notice about a person?

The way they carry themselves I suppose? Are they happy or sad? Shy or outgoing? Do they seem like they want to be friends or not? Stuff like that.

6. Do you have to believe in something in order for it to be true?

Nope, though this is an interesting question~

7. What is your dream career?

To be honest, I have no idea. I always wanted to go into the medical field but I realized being a doctor might not be right for me... So I’m VERY confused! I’ll say for now my dream career is to be an optometrist though~

I can’t really do anything about it at my age right now :P

9. Do you make decisions with your head or heart?

My heart, I tend to overthink but I know once my heart is set on something, it’s hard to reason with it~ often times when have arguments about choices where my “head” wins, I feel disappointed in the decision and that’s how I know I should choose the other :)

wow im like 2 mins into the first round and they’re introducing fruit planet and im already convinced tencent did a better job at making this finale ep than youku did for snzm LOL 

oof these questions hit home right away. wow xiao zhi changed a lot to become the leader he is today, someone who wants to see his band grow together. you can tell youzi has done some serious reflecting too, to call himself too unrestrained before. ughhh you can just see how much they love runze and how much he loves them. i love parents. xiao zhi really gave runze the confidence he needed and they all gave qiang ge the encouragement he needed. im surprised the suo na worked as well as it did with the disco song and im so happy to see how happy they were on stage. 

LOL muji is the real one to rein in szb and is harsh on him bc he needs it. the way muji says hes not afraid to get on people’s bad side and be the bad guy kinda reminds me of huang enyu

hope hyt and xiao xiong have really learned through their growing pains (same to ljt and szb) does that mean fruit planet is the only group where the main duo’s main fight wasn’t against each other but tencent? lol i cant imagine xiao zhi fighting any of his kids? wow i still find it amazing that zhao ke can so proudly say that 熱帶低壓 was his happiest times in front of the rest of 氣運. like thats legit love he feels for 熱帶低壓 and they respect that. wowowowow hyt’s “i can be strict towards myself, but i gotta let go for them” is like the ultimate lesson for micromanagers and he’s learned to believe in and respect his teammates and not feel like he needs to control everything. good for him.

maybe im just biased but the pitchy-ness of 氣運’s singing (xiao xiong and ma zhe /cough) just bugs me so much ugh it makes me sad bc the song is nice and id like to add it to my playlist otherwise, but i cant listen to this without frowning at the vocals. to be totally transparent, I didnt like the 午睡 song much at all (sorry ljt TT) and disco is not my style (sorry fruit planet) but at least the fruit planet perf was fun. im just kinda disappointed by these perfs in general :\

tencent putting the order as fruit planet first and 午睡 second and 氣運 last is a sign they already know 氣運 is gonna win... bc fruit planet was first place last week but if they go first that puts them at a disadvantage aka no one will be a match for 氣運 lol 

lol wat is this intro video.... the plushie fruits hanging from their suits LOL im gonna have to go look up footage of their busking!! watching this second perf... this is a song i will add to my playlist :) i just love seeing xiao zhi jamming out like hes enjoying it from the beginning to end, and i esp like the contrast when wsh switched to his drum set and the part where youzi sang! his vocal tone is such nice contrast to yrz’s. and i love how theyve figured out how to incorporate qiang ge’s suo na into their music. i will say it was kinda messy in terms of runze’s rhythm and they messed up some of the lyrics but for the amount of time they had to prepare im happy with this last perf :’) 

aw idk how i feel about ljt voicing that he’d rather do a band than be a soloist... but LOL MUJI a gentle but cruel real talker lol okay. who came up with these intro videos wtf???? 

OMG I CANT BELIEVE THEYRE DOING “I WILL MISS YOU” ARE THEY ALLOWED TO DO THIS SONG??? omg omg thats such a attack in the feels tho wtf this is such a throwback ugh i still remember this song from when zyx and ljt performed it on the first mrzz and now ljt’s bringing it back? omg but it has so many memories from the first mrzz kids and wow idk how i feel about this. i mean i know its HIS song so he’s perfectly entitled to perform it but its wild bc this song is so mrzz1 its kinda strange to bring it back for mrzz4. like does it feel like the mrzz1 kids are being replaced? or maybe i should take it like ljt is singing it in their honor and bringing it back to where he began. lol like zzn and mby know the lyrics bc theyve performed this song themselves before :’) okay so the beginning was a tiny bit pitchy but ljt is the best singer compared to everyone else!! the way he sings 揮揮手 with such power is so oof and i still just love his vocal timbre. one thing i like about 午睡 in particular is that none of them are trying to fight ljt to be a vocalist, which is unlike the other two group, and i think its nice that he can just be trusted to handle the vocals and it keeps it cleaner bc hes a capable vocalist on his own. im happy to see muji on bass too bc its cool he can be so versatile. LOL LJT introducing everyone in the middle of the song i love him hes so funnn. i will say, the arrangement of the song felt a little frame-heavy? idk if that phrase is the correct way to describe it, but i felt like there wasn’t enough sound filling the song, but jym is really jamming out in the background (im so happy whenever i see a glimpse of his drumming smile) and ljt is carrying with the vocals in the foreground. maybe its just bc im not used to this arrangement so it sounds strange to me. LOL CAN WE TALK ABOUT THESE INTRO VIDEOS BC 氣運 ‘S WAS SO NICE WTF HAHAHAHHA its so biased???? like wtf were the first 2 intro videos nonsense, and then you get to 氣運 ‘s and theirs is all artistic and pretty and dramatic and nice???? what???? hahahhahaha oh my goodness they even shipped hyt a drum set in the middle of a freaking grassy field wtf

okay i honestly think xiao li is the best singer in 氣運, maybe im biased but even he started a tiny bit pitchy but he adjusted quickly and his voice is just so nice and he puts a lot of care into his vocals even while playing piano! 

unrelated to the music, but honestly i thought i liked xiao li with short hair better but i do like the bangs he has framing his face here. i just prefer the back of it to not be so long LOL 

WOW i said all that about xiao li’s voice before xiao xiong started singing (and i immediately wished xiao li would sing again.. oops sorry to xiao xiong, but he gets off key easily when singing soft and low contrast pitches) and then xiao li SANG THE CHORUS AND WOW his voice is so nice i like it so much!!! i really hope he feels satisfied with this perf, as its their last perf and hes said before that he couldnt face their songs straight-on yet. wow i just have to go back and listen to him sing the chorus again wow the way his voice sounded on "傷心" OOF. 

what is zhao ke looking at when he raps? lol i feel like hes always looking off in a random direction but maybe im just not remembering correctly. but also the vocal effects they put on his mic make it hard to understand what he’s saying? but he also sounds like he has an accent. I dont know much about zhao ke like where he’s from or anything, but im curious if thats just bc of the vocal effects or he actually has an accent. 

UGH im sorry but then xiao xiong starts singing again and hes still off key and im still cringing..... i mean id noticed he was pitchy in previous episodes but this episode seems particularly noticeable?? im not sure if its bc they did any autotuning in the past but idk xiao xiong’s kinda not doing so great today :\ also the transition from zhao ke’s rap to xiao xiong’s singing was weird??? okay xiao xiong is fine once he starts projecting and puts more strength behind his voice, and then his vocal color is pretty nice! but prior to that.... 

lol am i think only one who thought it was weird that they recorded the guitar solo instead of having someone play it live? was it xiao li that played it on the recording? also zhao ke outside of rapping is basically a accompanying bass vocalist at this point lol 

im happy to see hyt being so happy jamming out back there, but his drum set is legit WILD. 

i know xiao li isn’t super popular but i wish people could acknowledge that 氣運 would be nothing without him. ugh he does so much for their music and sound, look at how much he was involved with in the credits for this song gosh.

wow this last performance really giving a visual demonstration of the group splitting is kinda sad for 銀河 bc they dont get to show up until the very end and theyre not even one of the last groups standing oof but also gives you a visual representation of how it’s been especially difficult for qiang ge, muji, and zhao ke, and also the others who had to go through group splitting.

well its over. now i can go watch the recording of yingge’s livestream from sunday without fear of spoilers LOL

honestly looking back, this was a good show. i started it not really thinking id get invested bc i was also simultaneously watching snzm and since snzm is an idol show i knew id naturally get more invested in that. BUT these mrzz kids have really grown on me. theyre good kids and theres lots of talented kids among them. im curious how wjjw will deal with having 3(?) bands to promote now, but who knows, im just hoping to see more of fruit planet, ljt, and xiao li’s music in the future. i went into this show for ljt, and i came out of it with more music on my playlist (which is always great) and a high appreciation for xiao zhi and xiao li. hoping to see more of them in the future!

part 2/? of that p5 au except idk man this is months ahead of part 1 I just wanted to write something romantic. Slow burn is my middle name.

Within seconds her fiancé managed to leave an acidic taste in his mouth leaving Shinjiro little choice but to punch him square in the jaw to shut him up. The way he suggestively spoke to Haru like she owed him anything more than her signature on their engagement annulment aggravated him beyond words. His knuckles ached, just the way he liked, as he replayed her fiancé fumbling backward yelling threats and obscenities in the air. At least now they were directed at him instead of her. 

She looked up at him begging for answers that never reached her lips. Her eyes were careful and calculating as though analyzing his every move and regurgitating a proper response. She was effortlessly five steps ahead of him, except when it came to matters like this. His nails angrily sank into the palm of his hands, realizing that he had stepped—no, trampled—over carefully set boundaries of status and etiquette. Fury overtook him and despite the fluctuating fervor of his words, she looked as composed as ever.  Her doe-like eyes arrested him. That in itself almost threw him off the edge.There was a brief sense of relief as he saw an intense life possessing her gaze contrasting how complacent and vacant she looked moments before.

“Thank you for your concern, Aragaki-san,” she carefully packaged her words. Despite her assumed inexperience in running a company, diplomacy and grace were embedded into her very bones. He took a step back to set a physical amount of distance between them hoping it would temper his dwindling patience. Haru looked up at him in what seemed to pure awe, naiveté coloring her features as his temperament seemed vague and inexplicable to her. She was a conundrum through and through. She was more mature than any of the others—he knew the moment she contained herself in isolation during her father’s passing—but at times she was just a girl who was vulnerable and afraid of the decisions of the men surrounding her.

How could she let him treat her like that? The way her supposed fiancé leered at her still sent imperishable waves of rage straight to his thick skull. He parted his lips dumbly but struggled to form anything but a wisp of startled air.

“Don’t thank me,” He reproached, exasperation filling his body as the adrenaline from before still thrilled within his veins, “You should be more careful. You’re an heiress ain’t you? Shouldn’t you have people protectin’ you?” There was a husky tenderness in his tone, at least under layers of repressed fondness for her.

“That would imply I have people here I trust.” Her sharp statement contrasted her soft voice.

Her honesty silenced him.

“There are many matters that I can’t rely on people outside of this room.” She looked outside of the large paned windows of her father’s office that overlooked the Okumura building so that Shinjiro could catch her meaning.

Shinjiro finally took a moment to scan the room. His eyes narrowed in on her late father’s name plate still resting on his desk, ready to welcome him back at any moment. Dust collected on the shelves that she didn’t dare touch out of pure sentiment or respect. She thought that maybe in this little way, her father would still have some way of being by her side. There were times she found herself sitting at his desk in isolation away from the prodding of the executives and their manipulative advances and the managers looking up to her with dishonest expectation. It was a difficult dance to play. Haru was well aware of her father’s many flaws, but at times she found herself wishing he was able to impart some of his business acumen to her. She felt at peace here, and what Shinjiro didn’t know was that he was the first person she allowed in her late father’s office—her own safe room.

They lived in completely different worlds. The matter at hand allowed him to temporarily bury the pressing question that always haunted him in the back of his mind—did Mitsuru exist in this lifetime as well?

Even Mitsuru and her seemingly impenetrable ferocity were reduced to just a young girl with a burden too much for one person when faced with a contract of marital agreement. He sneered at the irony of how much Mitsuru sacrificed to save face for her father, when he did nothing in return but push her into the arms of someone who didn’t even deserve to stand in her vivid presence. It rattled him how anyone could see someone as fearless and thrilling as Mitsuru as a mere trinket in their collection of things to feed their greed. And it bothered him more she allowed that to happen. She accepted it, just because of an inexplicable obligation to the Kirijo name and to a vague sense of burden and responsibility. To hell with that bull shit. He was a simple man—maybe too simple—but the ideology of the wealthy was incommunicable to him and to add on to that insurmountable difference of status, Shinjiro had no idea what it meant to have any sense of loyalty to a man you called something as foreign as “your father.”

Even in this life, Shinjiro was born an orphan. The only loyalty he had was to his team and to his own redemption from the past. The word ‘father’ meant nothing to him. Sojiro had given him a warm place to sleep and the freedom to cook, but his generosity was far from fatherhood. But in certain ways, the way Sojiro offered unceasing compassion and love for Futaba challenged Shinjiro’s mindset of the concept.

Merely in terms of circumstance, Haru reminded him of Mitsuru and that realization did nothing to compress his whirlpool of a temper. Despite his observations of Mitsuru’s interactions with her ex-fiancé, he never stepped in between them. There was, of course, the desire to ream Mitsuru’s fiancé, in fact, it never left him, but it wasn’t his place to do that. It was almost an unspoken pact between them. He respected her choices (although that didn’t mean he agreed with them), and she offered him the same regard. Mitsuru offered nothing but an understanding nod when he resigned from SEES after the incident, and he turned a blind eye to her marital arrangement. The difference between the way he compartmentalized his modus operandi around Haru and Mitsuru subdued him. What exactly gave him the permission to disastrously impede on Haru’s engagement when he did nothing more for Mitsuru than keep her at an arm’s length.

Latent realization cooled him down. He didn’t have a place in this intimidating office or an audience with a girl who was dealing with more than he could ever empathize with. Right now, he was acting no better than the patronizing men or her ‘fiancé.’ Reprimanding her, demanding that she needed something that she evaluated for herself as unnecessary, overstepping his boundaries under some false pretense of telling her for her benefit, he was just like the men that caused her distress in the first place. He was a fucking idiot. He groaned, finally sobering down to his usual abstinence.

“Nevermind,” he sighed with perceptible reluctance, an apology forming at the tip of his tongue, “You don’t need this. ‘Specially from someone like me.”  

“Someone like you?” she mimicked, her voice dropping an octave lower, filling the room with the burden he carried over from his past life. Whether or not it was a reality here, he was a murderer in a past life and that guilt still stained his hands.Silence colored the room like dread and what he recalled was uncommunicable forever. She didn’t press him any further. His expression was complex and fearful, and she knew better than anyone not to probe. He would let her know when he was ready, or at least that’s what she found herself unpredictably hoping. He readjusted the beanie on his head, revealing his raw knuckles from the altercation moments ago. God, he could still feel that smug bastard’s jaw cracking beneath his blow.

“You’re hurt,” her tone shifted to undisguised concern and her brows knit together to match.

“I’m fine.” It was absurd how she could think of others moments after experiencing such distress.

“Please, allow me to take a look at it,” she pressed with visible effort, “As a thank you.”

“I didn’t do this for your gratitude.”

“I know,” She quietly laughed as though thoroughly pleased with his answer, and the reason why was inconceivable to him. Her laugh chimed pleasantly throughout the room like a melody. “Then allow me as a friend.”

She carefully motioned for him to take a seat with a gentle probing of how you would treat a wounded animal. Wordlessly, he listened.

“Nearly cracking the skull of an heir to an enterprise is quite the felony,” Makoto stated as though reading aloud a case study. In one fluid motion, she took off her peacoat setting it aside on the bar table with one final caress to smooth the surface.

“I’ll take the hit for it,” He said, residual anger singeing the edges of his words, “I ain’t taking anything I did back.”  

“Oh, please don’t misunderstand me,” her composed expression broke as she visibly shifted to a friendlier demeanor, “I’m glad you were there, Aragaki-san. It’s horrible what that man puts her through.” She cleared her throat and re-stacked the already pristine pile of papers before her, “I’ll try to see to it that you aren’t charged. It may be difficult to silence a man with such—,” she paused meaningfully, “Lack of basic principles, but there have been various complaints from his employees of his misconduct in the work place. There’s more than enough for us to keep him just where we want him unless he wants a thorough investigation of his conduct.”

“You can leave that to Aki. This isn’t worth your time.” He set down a cup of coffee before her. Shinjiro’s culinary skills earned Sojiro’s trust which allowed him to use Le Blanc’s best coffee beans for certain customers. Makoto was certainly one of them.

“You’re quite perceptive,” Makoto replied as she smiled into her first sip. She closed her eyes briefly, enjoying the bitter taste of coffee coating her tongue. Setting down her cup, she carefully adjusted her skirt as she repositioned herself on the bar stool. “I believe you’ve only observed my choice of coffee once.”

“It’s a part of the job,” He said mirthlessly, embarrassed at the fact that she was so transparent with her observations.

“And protecting the innocent is mine,” she quipped, smiling as she successfully baited him into her impenetrable argument, “I’m still in training,” she added as she gingerly touched her badge, “but I’ll do my best in assisting Akihiko with this so this never reaches the light of day.”

He scoffed, humor leaving traces on the edges of his lips. He found it difficult to find the words to retort.
