My mother's bf had a fairly major surgery (he's fine and recovering well DW) and he's going to be housebound for his birthday this year, so I've been enlisted to come up with a fancy birthday meal for the special birthday boy that's primarily fruit and veg, sweeter than savory, and is something he's never had before.
Bc I'm making watermelington. It's beef Wellington, but watermelon. bc my mom only found out recently you can use watermelon as a tuna substitute. And I know that you can substitute most higher quality beef cuts with tuna or salmon.... usually. Anyways the idea fascinates her so I'm hoping to use that for bonus points.
Now he's off his ass on pain killers so I can't like. Ask him if he's ever had something before. so to meet my brief I've decided to just. commit a novel hate crime against the British I guess.
Anyways. I'm writing this because I need to walk myself through this process and think it'll be surreal enough to be worth taking y'all along for.
So, Beef Wellington. In its most basic bitch arrangement is a beef tenderloin wrapped in prosciutto/really thin bacon, with a layer of mushroom and onion mush, that has been further wrapped in mustard slathered puff pastry.
We will be ship of Theseusing this. bc beef Wellington is like. the opposite of what he wants. Which is why it's funny.
Puff pastry-> it's still just puff pastry
this one doesn't have to change (aka I can't be fucked to do pastry prep and I'm just gonna use store bought it's Fine.)
the prosciutto is also just going to be prosciutto.
Thin meat
Beef tenderloin-> watermelon,
Tbh this is a pretty 1 to 1 substitution. I'll bake the slices at like. 250-300 for an hour or so ahead of the rest of prep to dry it out a bit. bc you can't like. Sear watermelon to seal in the water like you can beef. By definition it's a very wet fruit (like me when I fall into the lake). Ill Add salt and chili and lime juice while baking maybe. this is the easy part
The mushroom mush-> salsa done bad style
As the word mush implies, this is meant to be a very soft mix. It adds a lot of nuttiness to the wellington that rounds out all of the salt from the meats. I'm replacing it with white person salsa(the birthday boy can't handle spice). Tomato, lime juice, parsley, avocado, cucumber, feta, and maybe mango so I can have an excuse to have a lil mango treat. I said I wasn't making it spicy. I'm still putting a bit of chili in it. bc it'll be better like that. This is also a ridiculously wet bit of mush, Even the original mushrooms have too much water. I'll figure something out.
Mustard -> jelly
He lives in a big city. those preserve sections are massive. I'll find a weird one. maybe apricot.
Prep:
We're in the mind palace kitchen, I have not attempted any of this. We're just thinking real hard about it and I'll edit as needed on the day and post results.
The watermelon
Preheat oven to eh. 300f? We want low and slow to dry things out without it taking a year. but idk what his oven is like. If it's gentle I'll bump it up another ten-twenty.
Slather some watermelon slices in salt chili powder and lime juice mixture.
bake for 30 min on a wire rack or directly on the oven racks (after cleaning thoroughly) if he doesn't have a wire rack. with a drip try underneath to catch the drippage. check frequently. Have one slice that's for being poked to see if it's approaching being meat. Bake longer if needed.
Salsa bad style
chop everything up and add it to a pan with some oil in it. Tbh I don't think the type of oil you use for cooking matters if you're not like, getting near any smoke points. Most people can't tell the difference unless you made your food bland as hell.
Anyways there's some wildly different moisture contents on the list so there has to be an Order to cook off as much water as possible without getting yucky.
Tomatoes and cucumbers go in together with some salt to get the cucs softening, then the mango chunks and lime juice. Once most of the water is gone the avocado feta and parsley can go in. There is a good amount of water in avocados but they're delicate and don't pan fry well, so we're just going to ignore their water crimes and hope for the best. They just need to be evenly mixed through the rest of the mush.
Putting it together
lay out the puff pastry, cut into sections to wrap each watermelon slice individually with.
Slather in jam
Take the prosciutto and lay it out on half of each section of the pastry,
spoon the salsa onto that
Melon
Another layer of salsa
another layer of thin meat
Fold the pastry over the top and pinch the edges bc watermelon slices are not a rollable shape and I don't want to carve a watermelon into a tube for this because that sounds irritating.
Brush with egg wash and more parsley
Cook in oven following the pastry's preferred temp and time. it's fucking watermelon, you're not getting ecoli from it.
watermelington :)
I'm serving it with baked sweet potatoes and spinach based salad with whatever toppings are left over from making the salsa.
anyways thank you for joing me on this thought experiment. I will post updates once the deed is done. I'm sorry to every British person ever.

since your art style has changed (and i love how expressive and mischievous? it feels now, idk if that makes sense but i admire the heck out of your growth) what does your process look like now? do you use the same brushes as before? do you want to talk about what you love about your work now? i saw your tag about tlt redraws now that you like your art and it made me curious. anyway love your art so much, nori!
hi!! thank you so much for this very cool question!! i guess before i just drew without much putting any thought to like... anything at all haha, only when i started doing comics was when i actively tried to make myself enjoy the process more.
i just thought about what I hated and tried to change it and just do a lot more art studies in my own time and try to really think about everything... like composition ! and like with colors, i didn't like how i only used to use desaturated tones, when i enjoyed more colors in other art i see.
or with poses, i didn't like how everything i drew felt very static to me, it still does but i'm getting better!! so i've studied dynamic-ness and whatnot.
i didn't like how "realistic" i would naturally go with proportions while drawing when my personal taste enjoyed more cartoon-ish and whimsical proportions, so i tried to be a little bit more loose with that but i'm not all there yet. for example, when i do some reference studies in my own time i find myself copying it 1:1 as it is, so now i try to incorporate it into a specific style without just copying it, it doesn't feel like i benefited otherwise!
i'm also trying to currently improve my lineart, i'm finding it much more enjoyable to draw with a thin brush! my lines were often thick and bulky and not super clean.
and yes!! i used to be loyal to like one or two brushes but i'm just trying new things constantly and it definitely affects the general vibe of the drawing, i've been obsessed with pencil brushes but i'm retiring it for a bit for a more jagged brush that i'm obsessed with now lol (still haven't posted anything with that, (working on it) but it totally changed the vibe.)
i feel like i often know when something looks right but i struggle on how to get there at times, but lately i've been seeing more right than wrong and just generally enjoying drawing.... drawing is my favorite thing.... i clocked in 9 hours yesterday on procreate.

Saw your tags and omg HARD AGREE. Dragon Cry is SO bad nfkanmdsa
ME AND YOU SHAKING HANDS
Actually yes thanks for giving me the excuse to rant. Hold on. I'm typing furiously rn.
-Okay first of all they gave us the most ridiculously confusing plot I've ever seen. The twist with Sonya being Animus was kinda cool but they never really. Explained why she had a bond with him? She mentioned he used to be kindhearted at some point but we never see that literally ever at any point in the movie?
-The storyline is so all over the place it's a HOT mess. Especially the scene right after Natsu escapes the weird bird cage thing he runs off to find the others and suddenly they're all there? For some reason? Where did they come from. Why didn't they have a little reuniting scene. I literally rewound the movie to make sure I didn't accidentally skip a scene but nope they just made the most awkward cut/story progression in history I guess!!!
-The fanservice was so. SO bad. Like yeah the majority of the time I can at least tolerate it but this time it just made me extremely uncomfortable. Why are Erza and Lucy's boobs SO fucking large. Why did they have to make Lucy dance in like two strips of cloth. I thought I woke up in an alternate universe where Fairy Tail was a hentai. I genuinely wanted to vomit lmao
-The animation style really threw me off like I can tell it was either animated by a different studio or they wanted to try a different art style for the movie? But it just felt wrong and the proportions and faces were weird and. Yeah idk.
-What was up with the Three Stars?? Iirc we never got to learn their names or what their motivations were they were literally just. There. And they were built up to be these super powerful wizards only to get their asses kicked by FT like two scenes later. I get that being a movie obviously the fights had to be shortened but they literally did the same thing in Phoenix Priestess but WAY better. They really were like yeah uh we need some enemies for Team Natsu to fight let's just go with these guys and not give them any personality or backstory or motivations. (Except for the doll dad he was okay I guess)
-WHY WAS LEVY THERE. LITERALLY. ACTUALLY. She literally did nothing she served NO purpose in the movie she was just there?? Did they just want to shove in as many cameos as possible??? I know generally Levy isn't much of a fighter which is fine, I was kinda expecting them to do a Gajevy scene where Gajeel rescues her from some soldiers or smth which would have been fine but they didn't even do that. She literally just stood there and had like 2 voice lines. GO GIRL GIVE US NOTHING
-SPEAKING OF CAMEOS this is more personal beef than anything but man WHYYY wasn't Loke in the movie,, my boy my beloved my stupid idiot lion I'm so mad he wasn't even onscreen for like, 5 seconds
-I'm sorry but Juvia was so unhinged this movie her possessive/stalker behavior over Gray was actually super fucking creepy lmao
-What did they do to Happy. What the FUCK did they do to Happy
THEY MASSACRED MY BOY. LOOK AT HIM. HE'S GOT ANXIETY
-ALSO the scene where Happy and Lucy were crying over Natsu and we got tons of flashbacks from his POV of people who are important to him? WHY THE FUCK WASN'T HAPPY THERE?? They literally showed everyone from Fairy Tail precious to Natsu except Happy and I'm just sitting here like. HELLO?? You are SO wrong for that
-I will say I DID enjoy the little Nalu teasers we got especially the scene where Natsu showed Lucy the stars 🤧
But yeah I was here for this and this only:
The Nalu + Happy family bonding moments made it OKAY
Anyway sorry rant over. Dragon Cry bad. Natsu's brief moment of looking half dragon was a super sexy character design choice but the buildup is not worth it imo

i think a lot of people who talk about gristol's lack of a "redemption" miss a very important tie between gristol and the themes of the game -- both those who think he doesn't have the capacity to change, and those few who actually feel like it is an injustice that he wasn't given one. take a read through this post by babycharmander to get a head start on what i mean.
gristol is not irredeemable, in the narrative, solely because of actions. in a series like psychonauts, i think if that were so, it would actually feel out of place. what has gristol done as a character that is worse than oleander, or loboto, or ford cruller? aside from regular psychonauts shenanigans like causing trouble by infiltrating the psychonuats, taking truman's brain, and putting everyone in danger, i would say none of you feel like that's actually "irredeemable" behavior compared to others, no? and so we might turn to his personality -- but, unfortunately, being a shitty person is not "irredeemable" behavior either. psychonauts has dealt with plenty of troublesome people like this. where you start to get somewhere is examining his goals -- gristol has nationalist and facist ideas floating around in his head, but they still are not realized. they are dangerous, yes, but there is a still difference between a child being fed propaganda and a false narrative of those ideas his entire life, now as an adult who still has not had a realization about the entire reality of it, and his adult father that has committed actual crimes resulting in many deaths, as well as other atrocities as the gzar of a country all while teaching his son this is what he should aim to emulate. as such, much of gristol's character is only "what if"s -- "when" he'll be gzar of grulovia. there's a lot he'll say he do, but gristol has not done those things. he might have the potential to, in... well, in his hypothetical world where he even can back to grulovia. but, it has not happened, and will not happen. and that's vital. his mindset is very important to this discussion, especially when it mirrors real world troubles, but what kind of message would it send if you were to say "there is no stopping these harmful seeds of ideas from sprouting, we can only suppress and punish these people". obviously that isn't true! dicussion of paralells to real life harmful ideology is relevant, but i would also say that for gristol as a character, it is much less about all that, and more about himself, in his childish and selfish fantasies of getting everything he wants, and essentially dipping his foot in those things along the way to getting there.
the entire point of that post i linked, that is almost exclusively why gristol is not redeemed at the end of the story. gristol is selfish, and a dangerous individual. but most of all, at this point in time, he does not allow himself to grow and change, and there is only the smallest bit of hope that he's starting to take a step. this specifically contrasts against the other characters in the series who have decided to turn over a new leaf when helped by raz.
gristol is absolutely portrayed as less sympathetic than many characters, because there is truth to it. he's still rich, even now. despite his entire mind being a pity party for himself, you, the player, and raz, see through it. the problems he does have are extremely rich people's problems for the most part, but honestly, where it leaves him makes me pity him quite a bit. regardless of whether or not other things in his past could be considered traumatic (nearly being attacked by soldiers, having to flee his home as a child -- and i would say they are in his eyes, considering that panic attack room), like every other psychonauts character, his past still has an iron grip on his present and future and shapes every single little detail about his character. for the most part, you are absolutely supposed to look at this and go "are you kidding? this is his tragic backstory?!" and it is completely fair to do so. but, to say he went through nothing is not true. because, to gristol, all of that was the end of the world, and that's all it needs to be as a character motivation.
despite everything he's done, gristol is far from a monster. as babycharmander discusses, another theme touched upon is this idea that anyone has the capacity to do harm, which leads into the familiar discussion of "good" vs "evil" people. dehumanizing people who are less than agreeablse, have done otherwise harmful things, and even are abusers, only adds to the inability to self reflect. the struggles of this character at his core are human. they are something i'm sure if you thought about it, you could understand. he was a child who never grew up. things change. he wants his perfect, childhood life back, one where he had no responsibilities, where he could have anything he ever wanted. to go back to when everything was perfect, and nothing was wrong. the epitome of peter pan syndrome. he wants attention and adoration, and things he genuinely had been led to believe that he's entitled to. and who doesn't? it manifests in him being incredibly out of touch and dangerously ambitious, but at it's core, it stems from very common, and very human emotions. gristol is still a child at heart. he's mostly preoccupied with fantasies of being waited on hand and foot, his ponies, and his cotton candy maker and caviar, rather than anything actually ruling a country would entail. he doesn't know anything about nor actually cares for his country and its citizens, only the idealized, rose tinted memories he had of the place, nor what his father has actually done, still believing he took his family and fled because he was a coward, and not because his actions were literally causing the destruction of grulovia and had they had to get out before they were the ones killed. after being isolated from his peers (and likely not actually having any, as royalty) for the first decade of his life, likely detached from his family as well, then once again shut up for years alone in a luxury hotel, it's clear that gristol has a very limited perspective of anyone else's life. gristol does not have a grasp on how to actually interact with people without a royal touch, form relationships, or practice empathy outside of a persona he puts on. i don't think this guy knows how to be a person.
i absolutely love the phrasing of "but there’s one person in this game we could not help" in that post. it's not about redemption, or being capable of it, or whether or not he even deserves it. but, that raz couldn't help him. a big thing about psychonauts 2 is helping people, not fixing them. i don't think gristol is irredeemable as a person. but i do think he's irredeemable for the purpose of this story and what its trying to tell, and rightfully so. because, most of all, raz doesn't have to deal with this. and neither do you, in our reflections of people like this in real life. raz has played his role here. if gristol is not willing to work towards change at this point in time, raz is not going to knock around in his brain until he does. it will not help, especially with how in deep he is. this doesn't mean as a character he is fully incapable of ever coming to terms with his reality. but it means, in the eyes of the narrative, it is not a story that will be told. he is going to have to have a big hand in that himself. and i think that's a very interesting thing to talk about and a great conclusion for what the game discusses.
