i know its unrealistic and nonsense to feel bad bc im not as good as i could be within a hobby bc a hobby is supposed to be fun and occupy your time but i cant for the life of me not feel guilty about not drawing and not improving

like.. i have most of the resources. i often have the time. i have almost a thousand pictures in my reference folder to be used to practice and learn. i have an internet connection to be inspired and learn from those better than me and yet... i just don't feel like drawing. and i mean drawing something grand.. not just the dozens of doodles and oc refsheets i keep churning.. i want to do standalone pieces like i used to and look at them fondly and feel proud of something. but i just dont have the flame to do it for months and months on end

i mean obviously this is much more likely to happen when it has been your primary hobby for over like 7 years contrary to, say, webpage coding which i just started to learn like a year ago. what's keeping me from wanting to draw though? its so frustrating to know you Have the Potential to be a good artist and knowing How you could become more but just.. not feeling like it. and telling urself im gonna draw tomorrow and tomorrow comes and its one of those days you'd rather stare at a wall the whole afternoon and it just keeps going and going and you stay stumped

We Are Ep.2 thoughts in chronological order

what peem did in the car trying to convince phum to part their ways is what the youth calls ✨a yap sesh✨ (he tried ig) (this is what this post is as well)

we're probably never seeing phum use those things he bought ever, he'll just keep hanging around in his engineer shirt

peem has so many ppl ready to square up for him including his auntie and he is recognised by tan as someone who loves his friends very much (which makes the fact tan has sold him away for time with his crush TWICE even worse lmao)

i don't really get phum's insistence on not telling anyone about being phum's "slave", not even tan who got him into the mess or his best friend but it's just his ego ig (aside from plot reasons)

i find pun more relatable now - tags along for the funsies and gets happy around fire

not convinced the beans and pork scene wasn't an ad but im not sure how cause i didn't clock any labels

the scene where peem brings in food and laughs with q feels like improv or breaking left in lol

fai missing cause of upset stomach might be some sort of foreshadowing and i'm a bit worried bout her

the professor is handsome <3 and could pas off as chimon's sibling in a show

satang playing this type of character felt a bit much in the first episode but i think he's getting more comfortable with the role as the show progresses and it look more natural; i'm glad his character isn't the googly eyed mentee and he actually teases a lot and snaps back but knows when to stop playing because q isn't the most patient person. (matt having to jump in like "bro he's serious" was so funny cause i hadn't clocked that either hahah)

the way we can see q flustered at certain points but seemingly unbothered at others is fun because his reactions aren't entirely predictable at this stage as we're still getting to know him. also it's mad cute when he clearly doesn't know what to do with himself

idk how he hasn't asked toey bout why he's in art yet, ig they're just now starting to properly get to know each other

toey took one look at q's back and decided "that's a cool ass aura to base my entire future around!" and tbh that's very young adult of him

q regularly asking about peem's work being submitted, he's honestyly worried <3

the way i cheered for peem burping in phum's face and then went "oh he came back :(" bahah

phum is definitely already planning his day and schedule around peem, i don't think he'd ever tell his friends because he wants to actually keep it going so one of the reasons is to not run into his faculty friends including tan and the second is to have lunch with his unconscious crush AND I AM VERY HAPPY WITH THIS STUPIDITY

thought peem could overhear the convo behind the car and realise what he was exchanged for but nope, he just dipped; i think that might be a plot point for later

phum not knowing tan has a crush on fang is so weird cause he genuinely acted like he knew while taunting tan, i don't have an explanation for that

fang is their p'!! i was so conviced he was the little brother, ig because of his big round eyes and the way phum acted all protective (that just makes phum cuter tbh)

it took me a bit to realise the nongs were there instead of the full arts gang and i was glad to see toey and q together (also the green sweater is beautiful on toey, hope it makes a comeback)

i was ready to believe fang had some sort of falling out with tan with the way he treated him but tan beaming and enjoying a dreadful setting (no talking, awkward sitting around in a bar with mid music and alcohol) shows that man is glowing just from being in fang's presence (i hope he reaches ridiculous levels of lame for him)

i was screeching when i realised where things were going with wasted peem and seeing him n the bench outside had me exctaticcc (ofc he didnt book a taxi. and ofc they cant just order one for him noww could they)

phum cockblocks but he kinda has to cause there's no reason for fang to be there otherwise; once the ridiculous proposition of him taking peem home comes up he doesn't really fight it at all - he wants to be with peem, sure, but i think he's also pretty okay with tan and fang being a thing

the way i was screaming "just buy the flowers rich boy!!! he wants to go home" and then the kid went to get more lol

ofc he couldnt just leave the flowers in the backseat, peem just has to have them in his lap.. and the seatbelt scene was so predictable but it's too much of a classic with all "figuring things out" parts of a romance that i can't complain

it makes absolutely zero sense aside from people liking people (cause fang knows what he's doing too) that phum would drive peem to his house - a place where tan has sleepovers at all the time and phum hasn't been to before. fang is his brother and they can sleep at the same place as well even if they don't live together but nope. also THAT CAR HAS EMPTY BACKSEATS, if phum wanted to he would've forced them to ride with him to keep an eye on tan

fang is probably planning to launch a big revenge attack on peem and that'd be so funny, those four can get way too entangled, i could get DRAMA out of their plans and schemes (this show is more hidden agenda than hidden agenda was)

tan's energy with fang reminds me of the duracell bunny lmao it's late at night and they've had a few drinks but his mind and body are all focusedon wooing fang (who is playing nonchalant but has probably had a crush on tan as well)

also no way he was just gonna leave tan on the street lol

toey and q aleady work so well together, toey knows his effect on q more or less and q doesn't shy away from being at least a bit vulnerable as of rn; i think they can be one of the best if not the best couple if they have a proper storyline; im certainly enjoying it the more than i thought i would

the fake blush on both toey and peem is ridiculous esp up close but ig they're cartoonishly drnk anyways

Idk if I was the first to make a Thing for them - there was some fanart and stuff floating around pre-S1's release but it seemed more Gen / I don't remember any being decidedly shippy - but all it took was these two screencaps and I was sold and making edits, so these are the first posts I made (actual first, second first / first edit). Shout out to my first L being that I thought they'd be called Cayla, good times

An early day desire (Sept 3rd 2018) was also for Callum to draw her, since we knew from their character bios that he was an artist. You can imagine how it felt when it actually happened in S2.

Needless to say S1 got me day of release hook-line-and-sinker

ok so anyway double first impressions and observations!! idk if ill be repeating any points other people have already brought up since im typing this without having looked through the milgram tag. and this probably won't be all that organized despite my attempt of neatening it up but ah well. i tried grouping my observations by point at least, but they're not in an order that follows the sequence of the mv.

also id like to preface this that firstly a) i don't have any personal experience with DID whether it be in myself or with people i know so please be patient with me if i say something wrong and b) for now please assume im going with the 2koto theory? not because i dont believe in the trikoto theory but because i haven't really dug that deep into it and so id be bad at spotting evidence of it myself

also im mostly going off of what i see visually in the mv since i haven't gotten to analyzing the lyrics yet

for now im referring to host mikoto and alter mikoto as bokuto and orekoto respectively.

the rest of the post under the cut!!

1. magazine/print(?) texture

the first thing i took note of was the magazine/print(?)(there's definitely a better term for this because just saying 'paper' doesn't fit. someone please help) texture that shows up when the mv kind of fragments. there's a lot of text that shows up like printed letters on a newspaper/print(?) that floats around.

how i find this interesting is actually in contra:st to the magazine texture on cat and the magazine/scrapbook format of this is how to be in love with you:

whereas kazui and mahiru center more on the clean perfect 'advertising' feel of magazines, mikoto's texturing in double feels more like the kind of crinkled old magazines you rip and mess up for collages in primary school.

it's kind of interesting, actually: with kazui and mahiru, it's their portrayals of the idealized romanticized forms of love and romance they're being sold. so with mikoto, is it the shreds of the idealized 9-5 grind he's been sold? since it seems to be implied in double and also one of the shots in undercover that mikoto is pushing himself too far for the sake of his work, and it's well known that the work grind in japan is crushingly brutal and overtime is not only expected but actively encouraged (i may be reaching with this one though? i dunno man).

2. the eye imagery

the next thing i noticed was that double has a lot of eye imagery. it's really interesting because it's like it's carrying over the feeling of surveillance from MeMe by replacing the camera povs that feel like spying on mikoto with more straightforward eyes on him.

what else is interesting to me though is the way the eyes watching mikoto in double contrast with the eyes watching fuuta in backdraft. as far as i can tell mikoto and fuuta are the only ones in milgram with eye imagery? but there's a difference in that while fuuta's eyes are disturbing partly because of the fact that they're semirealistic, mikoto's in contrast are a lot more abstracted in comparison. i wonder what exactly the eyes in double are supposed ro represent, since fuuta's are meant to represent judgement. given the stylistic differences between them im really curious as to what the similarities and differences would be between how they both view being watched? i can't come up with anything concrete at the moment though.

3. across the train carriage

i think throughout double there's a kind of shot composition/framing that shows up a few times, and it's that orekoto and bokuto seem to be across the train carriage from each other.

in the first image, it looks like bokuto is being reflected in the window behind orekoto, meaning he'd have to be sitting across from him in the train carriage. in the second, an identical pair of hands are overlapping orekoto's image, and since i doubt there'd be a mirror cutting right through the middle of the carriage in front of the doors, it'd have to mean that they're mirroring each other's actions from across the train carriage.

(you'll have to forgive me for it being in still images, i wish i could get it in motion but i am. not a gif maker. it's at roughly 2:16 though for anyone who needs it)

it also shows up in this scene which i like a lot!!! where the camera starts from a mikoto leaning haggardly against the train door looking at something behind the camera, who im assuming to be bokuto, before it pans up towards the ceiling and down again to the mikoto holding onto the bloody bat, who im assuming to be orekoto.

the Across the Train Carriage framing is really really really cool in and of itself and i love it!! but that panning shot has me rolling it's so good and i love it so much. the way it pans back down to orekoto so he's upside down makes it so disorienting and difficult to process especially with the scribbly effects over it. this could be reflective of how bokuto feels about this whole thing himself, but i donthave much of an analysis for this point, i just wanted to point it out because i think the directing of it is really really really damn cool

4. phone call home

yea i don't have an analysis for this part either, i also just find this sequence of events really really cool. just—the calmness of the phone call over the flashes of orekoto violently 'taking care of' the things troubling them!!!! it's the juxtaposition of the mikoto who calmly tells his mom that everything is alright and he's fine vs the mikoto that takes care of things for him that allows that kind of calmness to exist in the first place. it tickles my brain

although there is the thing of: if people are right that the mv visually distinguishes between bokuto and orekoto through the presence of eyebags, it is a little odd that the mikoto on the phone also has eyebags, implying that the him on the phone is also not bokuto. and i don't know what that's supposed to signify, but it's a little interesting to think about.

5. glitching Next Station screens

it's interesting to note that as the mv progresses the screens that show the train route and what the next station is get glitchier and glitchier. do any of the train station names correspond with actual train stations on the japanese train system? do they mean something else? im really curious, but my japanese isn't great and consists of only the 2 duolingo units i did like years ago, so could anyone please give me a hand with translating or point me to someone who has already translated it?

the constant appearances of trains in both MeMe and double is really interesting to me and i wonder what exactly it could be representing or what the significance of it is, especially since mikoto apparently bikes to work and doesn't commute on public transport

anyways, that's about it for all the things i took note of upon watching double the first two times, and i haven't done any especially deep analysis or anything. i haven't touched on all the mannequins either, mostly because im not reslly sure what they're supposed to represent and so don't really have much to say about them.

also hanae natsuki delivers a banger vocal performance once again!! ive never heard him miss in any of the roles ive seen him in, but he once again knocks it out of the park with mikoto. i haven't listened to mikoto's t2 voice drama neoplasma yet, but im sure hanae natsuki did amazing work on that once again, so im really excited to give it a listen!!

as for now though, i think ill have to look at everyone else's analyses of double to understand mikoto better, since even though i love him as a character and i like doing analysis im not as great at theorizing

I'm so bad at watching new movies too. I used to keep a list but I don't think I've watched a movie I loved in a while. Sometimes I watch nothing but shows for a while but other times I watch nothing but movies for a while lol and I'm on shows right now.

I will also probably just get clips of some songs too but there's also some where I wouldn't want that song but the sets kinda cool like Willow or Tolerate It or the tongue or costume change during Midnight Rain lol. I think the performance im most excited for is Enchanted with Long Live..since I never went to Speak Now tour..and I love the dresses. Haha I actually don't enjoy Tis the Damn Season as much as other people so I think I would prefer seeing No Body No Crime..it's probably fun to see live. Also ya that's why I said I wasn't worried about surprise songs cuz any song is a good one..cuz maybe I haven't seen it performed before if it's an older song or even if it was Rep..then it's probably a song I like anyway. For the few songs I wouldn't want, I meant It's Time to Go or Closure lol. I'm also kinda iffy on Happiness and Tell Me Why. Some girl I follow is apparently going to the same show and loves It's Time to Go though lol. I would be happier with Right Where You Left Me or Renegade though. Rated 1-10 based off many things but mostly memorable-ness and feels they made me feel.

Manacled (370515 words) by senlinyu OBVIOUSLY Im going to recommend this one... Arguably a famous fic amongst the Harry Potter fandom... I recommend this if you are emotionally stable enough to handle uh horrible horrible things. Very very dark and sad but honestly just amazing, better than most published books. Senlinyu is a great writer and ive read their other works and am always amazed. Harrys dead, kind of a handmaids tale au? that's how some describe it. Voldemort wants to repopulate the earth with more wizards and is using prisoners of war (the girls mainly) to do it. LOTS of dark stuff srsly read the tags before you read this. That being said, one of my favorite fan fictions, would recommend. Explicit. Rate: 9.5/10 BECAUSE ugh idk I don't want to rate smth 10/10... I haven't read everything yet so who knows! Also because this is a very serious fic and I like a little bit of fluff sometimes.

All You Want (172650 words) by senlinyu Give me ALL the omega verse fan fictions plz... Hermione stumbles into being an Omega when really she just wanted a quiet 8th year. P much all the alphas want her but only one is not actively chasing her, until he is. tbh they deserve to be together in my opinion! Its not really like a werewolf AU, more of like a secondary gender type thing. Some smut... kind of a lot but still some good plot. Explicit. Rate:8/10 I did read this a long time ago so im forgetting some key points however, I am bias and love a/b/o and pining!Draco so sue me... also well written smut, did not make me cringe at any point lol.

Unwritten (28891 words) by Maloreiy Veela!Draco.. yas... I guess I just love creature fics idk. Basically, Veela!Draco, Mates r a thing kind of, Hermione is his mate, but obvi he can't just tell her cuz they hate each other. No-war AU which I honestly always really enjoy. Feels like a very long fic when you read it but only almost 30,000 words... I don't have much to say other than I really liked it. General Audiences. Rate:7/10 because it is not very memorable but still cute. Also, I like how they are written.

The Auction (325702 words) by LovesBitca8 Possibly also a famous fan fiction amongst the Harry Potter fandom.. I often confuse this fic with Manacled when reflecting on it and remembering it however, they are very different. This fic is more light hearted (not by much) but still has very dark moments... dark themes, dark imagery, but no dark Draco really. He's KIND of dark... well ok he's pretty dark but I am unfortunately a dark Draco apologist. Essentially, Harry is dead, Hermione and everyone else is being sold off at an auction (hence, the title lol) to death eaters. This is kind of spoilers... sort of, but Hermione ends up in the "care" of Draco. Its honest an amazing fic and there's some badass girl characters/moments. Especially towards the end we get BAMF Hermione kind of. This fic is long as shit and also has some dark stuff so read the tags for your own mental well being. Loved the ending tho even if it took me like 5 days to get to it. Would 100% recommend this. Favorite fic probably. Explicit. Bring Him to His Knees (246526 words) by Musyc BDSM uh stuff...post-war, auror Draco, Friends w/Hermione... the author tags it as "idiots to lovers" so I think that's funny. Murder is happening and its linked to a local BDSM club and he needs to go undercover w/Hermione (just cuz) in order to access the BDSM club and find the murderer... they cross some lines and end up uh in a different sort of relationship... Awkward Hermione and confident but horny Draco. Good fic, I was in my BDSM era when I read this so there's a good amount of smutty stuff but it takes a while to get to, very drawn out (in a good way) but some ppl don't like slow burns. Explicit. Rate:7/10 cuz its very long but also really good and I do love the ending a lot.

Love is Madness (24589 words) by Canttouchthis, LeilahMoon DARK!Hermione... like seriously fucked up... this is a fucked up fan fiction tbh like its seriously messed up... Idk what else to say about it. Hermione is obsessed w/ Draco and takes advantage of his emotional troubles and practically kidnaps him and does some... immoral things... Idek what to say abt this honestly and I wouldn't recommend smth like this usually but its realllyyyy well written. I usually don't like dark!Hermione but its just really well done.. idk im warning you its weird as fuck and dark but its good! Explicit. Rate: 7/10 superrrr memorable and well written but the... content is disturbing... I still read it and liked it obviously but its just sort of off putting a little. Good luck...

The Troublesome Thing About Time (38914 words) by LadyKenz347 Okay so first of all... I do have daddy issues so maybe thats why I like this fic but... its good! Draco and Hermione are co-workers kind of when somehow Older!Draco (like 40 or 50) is sent back in time and finds Hermione and claims they are married in the future and he needs her help.. yes he is a DILF for real... without the father part idk. Smut happens and it is uh controversial to present Draco but its ok dw abt it. The plot is actually really original and interesting and the smut is well written, double trouble. Mature. Rate:7/10 Good fic honestly but not super memorable, maybe cuz it ends really sweetly.

A Thing With[out] Feathers (18253 words) by senlinyu Honestly.. slay. Veela!Hermione? (kind of Veela!Hermione idk) r u joking? Love it. Romantic comedy? hell yeah baby. Good fic. Hermione works at the ministry and gets sent out to deal w/ a Veela divorce when things go.. wrong and Draco helps her out. The author tags it with "idiots in love" so thats adorable. I love idiots. Not much to say without spoiling it since it is kind of a short fic but I do love a good creature fic. Explicit. Rate:8/10 just a good fic idk no explanation for the rating other than bc I said so.

Basically, Voldemort's defeated but then a zombie apocalypse? whaaaat? crazy. Hermione and Draco team up to survive and search for a cure, I think? not sure, I'll get back to you but! it looks so good so I had to recommend it. Explicit. Rate:?/10 idk haven't read it but it looks interesting! but I am scared of zombies so it might give me nightmares. EDIT: I finished it…. This actually might possibly be my favorite fic….. took me a week to read and it was so worth it, the best relationship dynamic and such an original plot with so many original characters…. literally amazing, Rate:10/10 amazing i have no words to describe my love for this fic! would recommend a million times over.

Stretching your arms over your head and uttering a soft pleased grunt when you feel your back gnashing, you continue your path to the kitchen. It's almost lunchtime, but you came last night too late from San Diego and you need a coffee urgently. It has been the first time in two months that you've been able to sleep for more than six hours, after finishing the period of exams at college. And it feels so good to sleep in your bed. Almost colliding with your big brother, as he steps out from the kitchen, he leaves a rushed kiss on your forehead before disappearing through the living room straight to his office. It's good to be back at home.

“Buenos días”. You yawn covering your mouth with a hand, once Nestor turns around.

“Buenos días”. He replies, noticing the fleeting shine in his dark eyes.

Puckering your lips squinting towards him, you grab a mug from the cupboard about to giggle somewhat ashamed. There's something in his smile that could kill you in a sight, making you feel a little nervous.

“Good sleep?”

“Yeah”. Nodding your chin, you pour some coffee to your delight, not waiting to take a sip from your cup.

You can't help but keep your eyes on his at all times, intrigued, figuring out what's going on inside his mind. Licking your top lip, you shake your head expecting some more words from him. Maybe, something about his thoughts right now. But Nestor is just staring at you, silent, like a freak.

“It's creepy what you're doing”. You whisper wrinkling your nose.

The head of security chuckles, resting his waist against the counter as he keeps his hands inside the pockets of his dark pants, slightly showing a pair of colored suspenders over the black shirt perfectly ironing. Nestor rubs the back of his head for a moment, before hiding his hand again. You know what it means. You know him ever since and, even if sometimes he's very quiet, you've learned to read his gestures throughout the years. He's nervous. His fingers are shaking. His palms are sweating. All from a second ago, when you've walked in.

“Wanna like— I mean, if you’re not busy… We could get lunch, maybe? Or even just a coffee, if you don’t have a lot of time?”

For you, it's so cute the way he has to clean his throat pretending everything is going normal, that you feel your cheeks and the tip of your ears burning. Kissing your teeth, you look at the way Miguel has taken a minute before, considering if it'd be correct to date his best friend, the only man he trusts in. Nestor has liked you ever since, but you aren't sure if you should hear your heart or the last brain cell alive in your head.

“Like a date?” You raise an eyebrow interested in his reply, and because of that, you can see how he gulps a little jumpy.

“A da— date? Nah… Nah, nah, nah”. He's lying.

Standing up and taking the last sip from his mug, he leaves it inside the sink about to abort the mission and run away. The expression on him lets you know he has fucked up at the moment you haven't said yes, simply.

“Don't nah to me, Nestor”. You laugh inevitable at the grimace of horror, not finding any escape route when your brother appears again accompanied by Álvarez.

“You okay? Looks like you've seen a ghost, brother”. The older makes fun of him, watching how he loosens the neck of his shirt by undoing a button.

“Yeah, everything go— good”.

“What's your plan for today?” Your brother questions whilst grabbing a small bottle of water from the fridge, sounding very interested.

“I'm goin' on a date with Nestor”.

Oh, the pettiness. Silence filling the kitchen. Your brother lands his eyes on his best friend; confused, perplexed. Miguel must be thinking it's one of your jokes or something like that until he notices the sweat on Nestor's forehead. Marcus laughs breaks the tension installed around you, shaking his head as if it was the funniest thing he has heard in his life. The counselor has to abandon the place, almost choking on his own saliva, flooding the house with his laughter.

Miguel just sips water, moving his head from you to Nestor, like when he watches a tennis game.

“Qué desagradable”. He babbles, imagining stuff he doesn't have to imagine. “New nightmares unblocked… I don't want to know… a thing about it”.

Waving his free hand, your brother disappears again not adding another word to his sentence. Nestor is close to a heart attack, trying to say something in his defense. But he has collapsed.

“I'm free for lunch”.

“Uh?” He utters placing his attention back on you.

“Lunch. I'm free”. You repeat, conscious he hasn't heard you.

“Ok— okay. I, uh… I'll wait for you to… get ready”.

(I promise it's good, the formatting of the original post is just a little plain cause I hadn't figured out what I liked yet). Description:

Levi returns from the war with a broken body only to have his heart broken as well when he finds (Y/N) has gone away from her father's farm never to return or so much as remember his name- or so her father says. (Y/N), recently returned from a medical emergency in a neighboring village, is informed of her lover's death, and the ensuing grief is almost too much to bear.

Months later, (Y/N) finds herself trapped in her father's house, and Levi finds a very interesting ad in the personals column of the newspaper. Letter-writing shenanigans ensue, and Gabi and Falco get ideas.

Chapter 3

For nearly a week, Levi was absolutely miserable.

He regretted sending his letter to (Y/N)'s father almost immediately after he dropped it off with the postal worker. What had he been thinking, trying to buy a woman who didn't want him? At this rate, he was no better than her father and the patriarchal bullshit he represented! (Y/N) was her own woman, always had been, and for him to imagine that she could be bought and sold— it was against everything Levi had ever known and loved about her. It felt like sacrilege.

And yet, when he received a letter with her return address at the top a few days later, he opened it as eagerly as Gabi and Falco opened treats from the marketplace.

What's this? he thought, furrowing his brows at the scratched-out words of the greeting line of the letter. It almost looks like— is that her handwriting?

The letter was indeed penned in (Y/N)'s hand, and Levi read it through, careful not to miss even the smallest detail. It read:

"Dear scuzzball,

Rich Bastard

Inbred yuppie scum

Fellow citizen,

My father thought it prudent to 'cut out the middleman,' as it were and give me your address to write you directly. I'm not sure I agree with his decision, but I am hardly in a position to argue, so here I am, writing to you as Miss (Y/N), former Survey Corps Medic of the 84th division.

Now that my introduction is out of the way, I fear that I must cut to the chase lest I be named a tease; I hear that you're fantastically rich. If this is true, you must lead a pleasant life, and can therefore draw what conclusions you will about my own. After all, imagining the world to be the way one wishes and believing it to be reality is a common pastime for wealthy men such as yourself— I'm sure you're more than accustomed to it. However, on the other side of the coin, I am not rich enough to draw such conclusions, and you included precious little about yourself in your letter to my father. My good sir, I insist that you give me at least your name at once, or I shall be entirely put-off.

Dutifully,

(Y/N)."

Levi read the letter through once more to be sure he wasn't dreaming, then again to truly understand the words that had been written on the page. Then, out of curiosity, he read it a fourth time, this time counting and skipping and exchanging the letters of each word in the same manner he would have if he were checking for a coded message— the kind he and (Y/N) had often exchanged when there had been a need for discretion. To his equal consternation and delight, he found a message hidden there between the words for him.

"Fuck off, mouth-breather" it read once it had been deciphered. "I've no interest in you or your kind— go pick your nose elsewhere."

It was strange— (Y/N) had no reason to use their code at all. It was known only to the two of them, and in her mind, whoever she was writing to would never realistically be able to decipher such a complex system with no prior knowledge of it. Additionally, Levi doubted that she would have recognized him in the letter he'd sent her father through his writing voice or his penmanship, since he had been quite another self at the time of writing it, and his handwriting had changed drastically when he'd been forced to relearn to write with his left hand. So why had she done it? Was it for spite, knowing that her father might read the letter before it was sent? Or was it her idea of playing a little joke on some unsuspecting schmuck who expressed interest in her?

If Levi had ever known (Y/N), the latter seemed unlikely. It made more sense for her to be embittered by having the element of control taken away from her, but then that begged the question— had she agreed to the newspaper advertisement and had simply decided that this 'rich man from the country' persona was not for her? Or was she an unwilling participant in all of this from the start?

It all made Levi's head ache. Above all things, he was a man of action; if he wanted to know something, he figured he'd be just as well off by asking after it than sitting and stewing over it.

He picked up a pen and began to write.

"To (Y/N),

It pleases me to hear from you directly. You will find that I am indeed, as you said, fantastically wealthy, though I would not say that is my most defining characteristic. In fact, I am a man of many interests, not least among them you; I would hear more of your time in the noble Corps and of your exploits as a medic. I find such adventure fascinating, and wish that you were more free to speak of the life you lead.

But, being that it is clear you have no wish to discuss your own personal matters, I digress. Instead, I wish to tell you more of what you do not know and have not guessed.

I'm a man of simple pleasures. I reside in a little cottage out in the countryside— one I built with my own hands and modeled after someone else's taste. Nearby, there is a flowing stream where I fish from time to time. It's lovely, and with my two companions, I'm hardly ever lonely. Of course, as I told your father, I have more than enough money to build for us a mansion, should you wish it, but I am enamored of this quiet, peaceful life.

My apologies— at present, I cannot write more. I have business that needs to be tended to forthwith. It was a pleasure hearing from you, and I hope to hear from you again soon.

A man from the countryside"

Levi reread the letter, and saw that it fit his needs well enough. Within it, he had left his own coded message as well, and he wasn't sure if he wanted (Y/N) to find it or if he would rather rip the letter to shreds than to even entertain the possibility of it.

The coded message read as follows.

"It took a while for me to break the cypher you used while writing your previous letter, but I must say that achieving the end result was as intriguing as it was difficult. I fear I must offer apologies, since it seems that I have offended you, but there are some things I wish you to know.

Firstly, I had no intention of offering you insult. That was furthest from my mind. If you wish to stop conversing, simply do not reply, and I will cease all communication.

Secondly, in your letter, you ask for my name. I cannot give it, because it is no longer mine. It belongs to something greater than myself, and I would want you to know me for myself, not for what I represent.

Thirdly— and finally— your insults are weak. They lack conviction. Try again, and do a little better next time if you'd like to hurt my feelings."

Satisfied, Levi signed the document with his current nom de plume, sealed it in an envelope, and set out to deliver it to the post office.

I'm going mad, thought Levi as a wild, raging hunger for more filled his chest. Even now, knowing she hates me as a stranger as much as she must hate my own self, I can't get enough.

(Y/N) couldn't believe her eyes. As she held the letter, she was shaking.

How? she wondered, sitting back in her chair, unable to comprehend what she was seeing. How did he— no one else in the world knew that code, it's so stupidly fucking complex that no one could—

But they could, obviously, because this man who wrote in a hand so unlike her old lover's— and with words so unlike his— had not only read through her desperate attempt at disobedience, but had responded in kind! He must be a prodigy, a genius— (Y/N) couldn't imagine the intellectual prowess necessary to decode her message so quickly without even the slightest hint at how it was structured. It was unthinkable.

However unthinkable it was, though, it wasn't half so impressive— or half so terrifying— as the way he had perceived her. This man had done much more than see the words she meant past the words that she'd written— it felt as though he had seen through to the core of who she was. It was as though he had known her. She felt so exposed; it was frightening.

And yet… there was something undeniably familiar about the way he spoke of himself, specifically of his name: 'I cannot give it, because it is no longer mine,' he'd written. 'It belongs to something greater than myself, and I would want you to know me for myself, not for what I represent.' (Y/N) wished she couldn't draw the connection, but she could. In that one line, this man from the countryside had sounded exactly like Levi might have in his position.

There was more— a cottage by a stream? A cottage built by hand? Modeled after someone else's taste? Whose taste?

Should she ask?

Why would she want to ask?

Was she finally going mad from grief, or were there real similarities between Levi and this stranger?

Feeling a strange sort of detachment, she looked at the last decoded line of the stranger's letter and felt a pang of guilt.

He didn't quite deserve the things I said, she thought glumly, picking up a pen to write a response. If nothing else, I really must write him and apologize.

"Mr. Countryman," she wrote, for lack of a better way to address him. "If it is adventure you would like to hear of, then I shall oblige you more than willingly. From my days in medical school alone, I can think of a dozen stories from which I think you will derive great pleasure…"

The rest was all drivel and nonsense— truthful drivel and nonsense, but that was beside the point. Within the stories she told was an interwoven apology… an olive branch.

"I have been unfair to you," her coded message read. "Allow me to apologize; I have been so far removed from civilized company that I hardly remember that there are people who are undeserving of my ire. My heart is recently broken, you see, and my soul tormented— it is not an excuse, but it is a reason, and I beg that you take it into consideration when you think of my earlier incivility. If you wish to continue to write, you may, for I fear I will die of loneliness here."

In the end, (Y/N) had written more than she intended to, but talking to this man felt… safe. By the end of her letter, she found that what she had said was entirely true. She wanted this man— this clever stranger who was smart enough to break her code and polite enough to respect her wishes— to continue writing to her. She truly had been so long without company… was it so terribly wrong to desire companionship until she found a way out of this blasted cage of a house?

Levi received another letter much sooner than he had the first, and was shocked to find an apology coded into it. Hungry for information, he dived into the coded message, and was further shocked by what else he found.

"Heartbreak," he murmured, squinting at the letter as though it would give him the answers he sought. "What would you know of heartbreak, bright-eyes?"

After all, he did wonder— had there been someone else?

Well, Levi supposed it hardly mattered now. Now there was no one, and (Y/N) was hurting as he had been hurt. As much as he would have liked to, he could take no satisfaction in it; he only wished he knew how best to mend the ache of it in her heart.

In reply, he wrote to her expressing his interest in the stories she'd provided— stories he knew to be true from hearing them from before— and a desire to share his own stories with her eventually. Coded, of course, was his actual reply:

"I know well the sting of heartbreak. It's shitty— having had my heart broken recently as well, I would know more than most how you're feeling. Still, I'm sorry you weren't spared the pain of it. Whoever hurt you must have been a fool— given the chance to have you, I wouldn't let you go so easily. I can tell that you're the kind of woman a man finds only once in a lifetime."

More of the truth— more of Levi— made it into the message than he had intended, but he was already tired of pretending to be a pretentious prat who cared whether or not he used contractions and complex sentences. He wanted more than that from this. He wanted something real.

Summary:

Martin thinks about their shoes, sitting beside each other on the floor by the bed. Thinks of the way Jon wears Martin’s cardigans more often than he wears his own, the way Martin’s started keeping elastics around his wrist because Jon always forgets his own when they go out.

He thinks about all the gentle touches and fussing over each other they’ve done, and how much is still to come over the next… however long Jon will have him.

They have a long way to go, an entire life to build out of the wreckage Jonah Magnus and Peter Lukas left them, but laying together in a comfortable, sleepy quiet, Martin thinks they’ve got a good start going.

Standing in the warm kitchen, slats of sepia light filtering through onto the counter in front of him, Martin doesn’t know what to do with his hands. He half expects them to go through the countertop entirely, glossy and solid as it is. He isn’t used to any of it, yet. The safehouse. Jon. Beams of sun pouring into his hands. After being deprived of everything of significance for so long, the longing that crashes over him is almost painful in its tangibility. He wants to laugh, to sob, to scream and hear it echoed back against the neat, square walls of the safehouse.

In the end, he doesn’t do any of these things. He makes eggs instead. He can do that, can’t he? Use his hands for something simple and plain and good.

(Or: In the safehouse after it all, Martin starts cooking.)

Notes: this fic really speaks to me a) because i project on martin like crazy and b) because food is also my love language. this fic is incredibly soft and it’s all about cooking!

Jon tries to force the Spiral to send him back, but the Sprial's corridors never twist things quite the way you want them to. Back in 1996, Elias has no idea why or how the Eye made such a powerful Avatar out of an 8 year old, especially when said 8 year old doesn't actually know he has any powers at all. Clearly such a child cannot be left outside the Institute's care. 

Notes: This fic is legitimately brilliant. The author manages to capture the big ADHD mood and the precociousness of baby Jon while managing to write a wonderful storyline. Time travel! Elderly lesbians! A Jonah who is wildly in over his head but was walloped over the head with paternal instinct! Baby Gerry! What more could you possibly ask for?

Notes: I am so in love with this author’s writing style and the way they write the characters!! The jon and gerry friendship is PERFECT and the character interactions are all darling.

whats the deal with proven winners?

okay. so. this is actually how i got into botany in the first place; i got an unpaid internship at a greenhouse in high school and realized, very quickly, that we live in a jurassic park hellscape where big companies breed plants solely for their looks and performance, and i found that so fucking weird that i couldnt get enough of it and fell down the rabbit hole. i don’t find them bad per say; i find them weird and how they manage their product in terms of policing their retailers is very sketchy to me, but they’re not like, monstanto-level off the shits (yet). with mother’s day next weekend we’re coming up on one of the biggest greenhouse/ornamental plant industry sales days of the year, next to valentines’ day (which favors the rose industry especially), so this is an exceptionally convenient time to talk about this. 

proven winners is one of the biggest ornamental plant companies in the united states, possibly the world. you might know them from their patented white flower pots. they’re centered in california (as, actually, a lot of these large flower producers are) and they manage a HUUUUUUGEEE network of giant industrial flower greenhouses. 

like, you have to understand, all garden retailers have to buy their shit from somewhere, and although the centers and local greenhouses selling proven winners stuff are often small and independent (unless ur talking like...flowerama or something), a large portion of the plants themselves, like many things in capitalism, form an industry of their own dominated by a handful of oligarch corporations, of which proven winners is one. small retailers order bulk products from these companies, should it be through full-color paper catalogs (which exist, btw, and are wild in and of themselves to look at; i actually have a few back home that i keep around solely bc they’re incredibly fascinating in a slightly offputting jurassic park kind of way), online, or through a sales representative for their region. 

it depends on what they’re ordering, but they can buy seeds, plugs (the black trays of like....tiny plants you buy at garden centers to put in planters? the ones that come in, like, six packs? those are called ‘plugs’), and in the case of perennials, woody plants of various ages, among other things. these plants are bred, marketed, and sold on a goddamn industrial scale. it’s wild. 

now....this is where it gets absolutely fascinating to me. this isn’t just proven winners, but proven winners is one of the top contenders of this. some highlights of how plants are actually marketed on an industrial scale: 

-plants come out in collections. like, you have horticulturalist designer people who put their names on some stuff and they all go out as like, The New Hot Thing(tm). 

-they always promote their top selling stuff, and the plants that won awards, and like, the most popular flower arrangements and stuff. this in and of itself, again, isn’t like.....bad, it just feels weird how plants are marketed as objects rather than living things, you know?

-these plants are 100% bred and optimized for their commercial value and how they look. see the above point about how it feels like they’re treating them as objects. 

-every year, there are new plants, which are put at the front of the catalogue and like, show them off as the Hit New Products. these are all part of the year’s collective collection, so like, proven winners has their 2019 collection all ready on their site in a special little tab: 

FUN INDUSTRY SIDE STORY: looks like they have some new orange petunias this year, which reminds me fondly of the 2017 purge ordered by the USDA of a ton of illegally GMO orange petunias....

you see, orange petunias don’t exist naturally, so what companies do is either 1. systematically breed orange into them, which can take years, or 2. take red petunias and just put in some coding for yellow from the maize genome, which makes them orange. usually, you have to submit all this paperwork and go through a ton of government red tape to sell GMOs, including required trials conducted by the federal government, but what some of these large ornamental seed companies were doing was just....not telling the government and just kind of...pretending that they bred them. so in 2017, a netherlands team noticed that these were like....kind of Suspicious(tm), and started doing some tests....and accidentally uncovered like, this huge international orange petunia scandal across all these companies, over 30 varieties of illegal petunia being sold internationally. they had to alert the actual EU, which then alerted the USDA, who then gave an actual government order for these large companies to literally burn, bury, or otherwise destroy all their industrial stock of the proven illegal GMO orange petunias. 

small retailers who had bought them assuming that they were legal were allowed to keep and continue selling what they bought, but the actual producers were ordered to just fucking. violently destroy everything. the USDA informed these companies that they could sell them again, but only if they were put through the proper government channels and received proper certification. i checked the old recall list and didn’t see these, so i’m assuming they’re like...Legit, but. im 👀 somebody test these lol

AAANNNNYYway that aside, if you would like to see the Proven Winners 2019 Flower Collection Showcase(tm), they have a bunch of......weird kind of ads on their youtube channel showing artsy pics of their new shit. to this day i can’t pin down exactly what about them makes me feel slightly uncomfortable, but you really do get a sense that they’re selling an object to preform, which i guess is the point, but...idk, it’s just a very different view of plants, i think, then i personally have. very sci-fi-y, if you will. all their ads are like this; these video are essentially very similar to what you get from their print sales booklets, but in video form.

see, last but not least, my biggest beef with proven winners is the weird way they handle their company. 

you get inspected by the plant police.

im not kidding. for those not very familiar with plant reproduction, you can grow vegetative clones of plants through a process called taking cuttings, where you cut off a part of the plant and put it in a new pot under the right conditions, and it develops a root system and becomes a genetic clone to the parent. obviously, anyone can do this with a lot of the proven winners plants, especially because PW plants, as i’ve noticed, tend to be bred to be more vigorous. 

proven winners wants to ensure that there’s no Illegal Plant Downloads taking place, so they literally like....send people out to these small retailers and ask to see their stock to make sure that all the plants are going in the Patented Proven Winners White Pots(tm) with the Patented Proven Winners Information Tags(tm). you MUST plant proven winners stuff in the pots they send you, with the instructions they send you, and they will check you for this. the first time my internship mentor ordered from them, they accidentally planted the plugs in generic brown pots instead of the white ones, and the weird proven winners police rolled in unannounced for an inspection and told them that the next time it happened they wouldn’t sell to them anymore. what they’re worried about happening is that the growers will order a small amount and then just make a bunch of cuttings without paying them, and it’s just......weird. like i get why they do it but that’s always struck me as really, really shady lmao
