actually part of what bothers me so much about this fandomification of historical figures is that it feels so disingenuous. if you love a person… you treat them with all the respect with which you would treat another human being, because that’s what they are. the same thing goes for historical figures—they are not any less human for having been dead 250 years. I don’t know. I just feel like if you really do care about these people then you don’t engage with them and their histories by blorboifying them, and if that’s the only way you can engage with them… well, then i’d take a step back to assess whether you can really call that history.

So, I've been thinking about Petro and Patches a lot.

Like two sides of the same coin.

MAJOR Petro/Patches (But mainly Petro centric) yapping under the cut

This analysis had originally been how Iris and Patches friendship can be compared to Alux's and Petro's “friendship” and what Patches and Petro represent in contrast with each other. But I found that that comparison had less weight and merit to it.

Ya know, “Petro and Patches are similar, but also Alux and Iris are similar too, Petro = selfishness, Patches = selflessness when it comes to their goal just like how Alux = Selflessness, Petro = selfishness when it comes to their character, yadda yadda, this shows how how Petroleum and Patchwork are technically opposites of each other and Alixer has the possibility of remembering what happened between him and Petrol gas.”

A whole yapping nothing burger.

But when thinking, one thing came to mind…

Have we ever considered that Petro may have been manipulated by the Wisp?

Like-, ok, I know it's obvious he was, but from what has been seen, it had seemed like he did this out of his own free will. But with Episode 8 and the similarities between Petro and Patches, I kinda feel like Petro is more of a tragic character than I had initially thought. (Not as tragic as Alux tho, he may seem happy now but that's only because he's not being abused and is actually free.)

Like, when Patches was on screen, it felt like he was Petro, if Petro never had a plan to betray Alux and start a war in the name of the Angel of Darkness.

It's like Patches is what Petro COULD have been.

The reason Petro is like the way he is, is through his connection to the Wisp and his desire to revive the Angel. But WHY does he want to do it? Is it his own Manifest Destiny? What's in it for him? Power? Revenge? Status? It's not clear for Petro.

He says that it's so “everything will be set right once more.” But who the hell made him believe that? And why does he want it that way?

And then I thought, does Petro even have a desire that ISN'T to revive the Angel?

You see, Patches’ reason for meticulous documenting and citing off different flowers and their healing properties would be to become a herbalist (maybe a royal one), and to, evidently, help people.

He has a motive, and he has a clear desire. (Although set by Alux with him mentioning that Patches could become a herbalist, Alux gave the idea of a desire that aligned with Patches character, not one that would directly benefit Alux for his own gain, while potentially giving nothing or harming Patches in return.)

Petro doesn't have that. He doesn't have a clear reason to revive the Angel. All that he has done and all that he had done before was to revive the Angel, but for what?

Petro doesn't have a fucking hobby. He's been lonely for a majority of his life, probably seeking a purpose when his house burned down and mother died. He was so young at that time too.

It seems that the Wisp had successfully manipulated Petro. Making him her puppet for her own gain, along with all of her other victims contributing to her cause. That's why it doesn't seem like Petro has a proper motive. It's because it's not his motive. It's the Wisp's motive. This is what the Angel of Darkness does. She manipulates and takes advantage of, and it seems that Petro picked up those traits from her.

Petro will, enviably, be left in the dust of a war he started with no salvation left if nothing goes his way. He's beyond saving at this point. In the end, He will be the Victim he was the Victor to. Blinded by greed, selfishness, and delusional self-righteousness, He'll be the maker of his own grave by blindly following the Angel of Darkness with her empty promises. She fed off of his desire for purpose from his tragic past. And now, Petro is destined to be the Villain by the Wisp's own making.

Meanwhile, Patches may work as a royal herbalist appointed by Alux, free to do what he wants and loves. Nobody to tell him anything that will sway his way of thinking. Nobody to sweet talk him to do something against his moral compass. He may die a Hero if he ever gets caught in an impending war, or he may die peacefully, with a life to remember by others.

Petro and Patches are two sides of the same coin, showing how manipulation can destroy a person's character.

Petro is a tragic character,

and Patches is what could've been, if the universe wasn't so cruel.

This one was a bit more heavy, and maybe a bit incoherent (honestly, looking back, I do NOT think I was cooking), but there was just a lot I had thought about between Petro and Patches. (This is more of like, deep character analysis and comparison.)

Patches most likely isn't meant to represent what Petro could've been, but instead is supposed to be the catalyst for Alux remembering what happened between him and Petro. But I just can't help but read in-between lines that (probably) don't exist.

But overthinking is making me draw more!!!!!! I guess that's a plus. :/

I think one of the Graces made a post earlier last week about wanting the Fittes team to be friends and I've been trying to figure out their dynamic ever since because I too want them to be friends. So far I have:

literally nothing about Ned Shaw, though to be fair when he's around I'm nore focused on Kipps than anything (cursed tunnel vision)

Bobby really wants to impress/is scared of disappointing Kipps. The shift from cocky Bobby presenting his research to the Portland Row gang and Barnes to the shrinking, embarrassed (almost ashamed) Bobby that George is mocking and laughing at is pretty stark

Not to mention he looks immediately to Kipps when George starts laying down HIS research

Kat and Kipps apparently do a lot of gossiping together about Lockwood, judging by the cemetery run-in

Kipps winks at the Fittes crew post-striking bet with Lockwood as if saying, "Look at this fool. We're totally going to win this"

not to be like mean or smug or annoying bc i do mean this in the nicest way possible but some people who run brackets are absolutely not meant for it. pulling 'i will not tolerate people being mean in the tags. that's so rude' (they are talking about when someone said 'what tf is wrong with you........' in a poll with a tough matchup). rbing pages and pages of unrelated stuff or other polls with their opinions as though people following the bracket care about anything besides the bracket. like just make a sideblog and only post polls. people are gonna say shit in the tags idk what to tell you. it's more work than you think it's gonna be but i thought the basics were pretty clear. like i know it's not that serious at all and this is a silly thing for me to try to criticize i just keep seeing poll mods having like full on meltdowns or posting shit i do not care about after i follow them for the bracket and i feel like we can save ourselves a lot of grief by being cool about shit. idk. do an absurd amount of seeding and graphics-making in a fevered frenzy becoming simultaneously over-invested in your own poll and desperate to keep the bracket itself as fair and professional as possible to give yourself something to feel in control of and ignore your own deteriorating mental health over the course of like two or three weeks like the rest of us.

So now that I think of it, I've been sort of assuming that like... if your average slasher serial killer or even just your more general thriller/horror movie killer were in the TMA universe, they'd end up a Fear Avatar or at least Fear-touched. Which makes sense since they're inflicting Fear, usually quite theatrically and with a theme, on to people who are then scared and traumatized.

But with a bit more thought, I'm not so sure.

Obviously the more supernatural killers could be Fear Avatars or manifestations. Demons, vengeful ghosts, witches, monsters, gods. Killers formed by intense trauma might also become a kind of Avatar maybe, especially if they become mythologized by observers. But for horror villains that are just... kinda fucked up human people, I don't know if they could draw the Fears to empower them. It would really depend on the individual.

Because being a Fear Avatar seems to require a certain amount of fear itself. Nikolai steals people's skin, their "identity" and names, clearly hungry for some kind of identity. Jude was terrified of losing Agnes. Mike chose the Vast out of necessity so probably was somewhat scared when he jumped, but he was just scared of the Spiral more. Oliver was scared of the nihilism of the End. Simon is constantly acting as if he IS important for all he crows about the existential meaninglessness of life. I could go on, but you get the point here.

Like, the term "awe" comes from "awful" which originally was used for things that were so great and terrible they inspired fear as much as reverence, which is a pretty good summary of how people worship the Fears. The fear is a part of the worship. And Fears are stated to feed on their Avatars just as much as their victims. To become an Avatar, you need to have that kind of terror deep in your heart in order to start paying it forward, or else the Fears won't even see you. While some horror villains fall into this formula, a lot of them don't!

No, in a great many horror movies I'd bet it likely be the survivors that were more likely to become Fear Avatars. People who have been so deeply, deeply touched by that kind of fear as to have it change them on a fundamental level, and in a traditional slasher formula frequently turn that violence on their attacker to survive.

Astro Observations No.12:

-just my opinions, take them with a grain of salt !

-Does anyone else notice that Taurus in the big 6 (but even more in the big 3) gives people a square/sturdy look about them.? Their head or their hair or even their hands or their torso (more rectangular but ykno same rule applies) some physical aspect of them tends to be squared off.

-Omg nobody likes showing off their significant other like a fixed Venus! (If they really like them ofc)

-Mars in 1st/Aries risings walk really fast and are always going like they’re got places to be even when they’re just wandering around.

-Said this in my astro analysis on the show You but like, Mars in Asc/Aries rising women can have a bit like not like other girls or I mostly get guy friends vibe a lot of the time. Sometimes I notice this with Aries moon women as well (sometimes they think they’re above more traditionally feminine women sometimes they don’t, this depends on how they’re socialized imo)

-Scorpio/Chiron rising may have tattoos heal especially well on their body (it’s scarification after all)

-Men/Masc folks with heavy water placements tend to be…tumultuous. I think its a cross of how masculinity is defined societally (patriarchy is such a thing) and the intense emotionality that water heavy folks already tend to experience. I think developed water heavy guys can be very comforting and emotionally in tuned and have a very nuanced sense of masculinity, but they usually have a lot of work to do to get there. Heavy Scorpio placements are known for this but Men with Cancer in the big 6 have a lot of work to do with their relationship to women & femmes/feminity/their mothers/ being nurturing/healthy emotional expression.

-Where Capricorn is can show where you’re picky and a bit rigid in your expression- Venus means you’re picky about who you romance and befriend and you can be critical of your friends and partners; moon means you express your emotions in very particular ways and can be rigid in naming your harder feelings etc.

-No matter how sweet someone is, if they have a fire Mercury they’re gonna say something out of pocket (they’re gonna go too far with a joke or something) to you just because they’re a fire Mercury. No filter imo.

-Do Gemini Venus women appear fox like or is that just something I see? Lol (maybe true for Gemini Asc as well?)

-Mercurial risings do tend to look youthful and mischievous, I believe Mercury is a trickster god in mythology and I see that all over virgo/gemini Asc. Just a sparkle of mischief in their eyes even if they’re not up to anything nefarious. Also they frequently have people guess they’re much younger than they are.

-It’s so interesting that no mater how dark Scorpio risings look kids are often like totally chill with them or even drawn to them. I’ve had kids stare and approach me. Idk why, I do feel protective over my siblings but those are kids I know lol. Maybe it’s Pisces in 5th? Giving a ethereal and empathetic approach to children in general? Food for thought. (Once a tiny girl complimented my hair from a car window and I thought I was hearing things then I saw her and I was like :,0 thank you precious child and that was that lol)

-Earth moons can have a special soothing relationship with animals, like calming for the animals and the moon natives. It’s almost symbiotic at times.

-I’m big on wearing what you want in general but especially if you’ve got that 1st, 4th, 10th house Lilith/ Lilith conjunct, square, opposition your ascendant - Reclaim your power and wear. what. you. want. Your confidence will carry you a long way. (Same can apply for Pluto aspecting Asc)

Hello. After drawing webcomics for 10 years and making about 10,000 pages of comics, here are some things i have learned/observed in that experience..

1) making comics does not get easier.. Not really

Making comics is a tedious and slow process and with so many different facets of the experience to learn - you’ll never run out of stuff to learn or weaknesses to work on. I’m not saying this to discourage but to just give the frank reality that it really takes a lifetime to understand. Be patient with yourself and try to set healthy expectations. 

2) Read your own comics after making them.

I don’t know if this is as important to other people as it is to me, but I do think that sometimes its easy to not re-read your own work and just go from your own memory of it, or maybe you’re tired of looking at it because of all the flaws. I don’t personally get sucked into the “rewrite/remake” cycle that I know is common with comics, as I sort of just accept things as they are, but re-reading my work does help me see where I have come from and where I need to go to next. I personally don’t like to lose sight of that, and I think re-reading helps ground me in the planning process of my work and gives me a better perspective on all aspects.

3) A lot of comic advice should be taken with a grain of salt, because its the person talking to themselves. (including this)

I see a lot of advice that never would have worked for me, or just simply wasn’t something I was ever going to follow. “Dont start with your big epic long stories”! Is a common one. I don’t think that’s bad advice exactly, but how many young artists are going to listen, especially if they’ve never told a story in the first place? Yes, the advice to start small and build yourself up with experience sounds great, I’m sure people do it, but if you’re an artist you’re probably not gonna be that responsible. And for me, when i tried to do this with eggshells, my house burnt down and i kinda gave up comics for a while because i lost a lot of work. 

Writing short stories is still something I struggle with, its just not easy for me. I have gotten better at it but i don’t think that makes me less of a comic artist because I haven’t gotten good at that particular format, or that I jump around on my projects. Is it more impressive to have more completed work under your belt, sure. But I also think that.. Idk.. what is the advice actually saying, because with that one it sort of feels (often times) as a warning that you’re setting yourself up for failure/embarrassment by attempting a comic like that. I don’t know how to tell you this, but comics are gonna be embarrassing no matter what you do and there’s no guarantee you’ll be more successful/not experience failure by avoiding your passions. Something to think about anyway. 

4) Don’t draw every leaf. Unless you really want to.

I’m the kind of comic artist that kind of doesn’t care about the art as much as the whole package of the comic. When i see a very impressively drawn panel/page, with laborious detail that is well drawn and maybe even colored ect.. That usually is kind of, I guess, a turn off for me as part of the reading experience. The thing is, when i encounter that, it usually signals to me that someone has poor planning skills for comics. It says to me that comic is probably not going to see its end or that artist is overworking themselves in an unnecessary way, that ends up concerning me about how they’re doing. Because i know how hard it is to draw comics. When an artist phones things in a bit, or has a limit on how much they work on a page, its a relief for me to see! because I understand they have healthier boundaries and expectations, and the art itself usually is less stiff too. This is all an overgeneralization, but I think with a lot of webcomic artists we are usually drawing a comic for the first time ever, so it makes sense we want to do our best and try as hard as possible - that just usually isn’t the smartest plan to put all the stock in the visual department. This also kinda frustrates me to see because most comics (professional or not) will also (generally) not reel the art in ever or make a more simple style. Generally I see it always trying to outdo itself, which leads to burn out. I personally only work about 1hr on each page i draw, that hasn’t changed in the 10 years I have been drawing comics, but i used to spend hundreds of hours drawing detailed lineart for eggshells and it didn’t even read well and i’d be disappointed with the results, feeling more lost with my goals than ever. PLEASe.. Just draw worse, its usually better looking in the end too. (because you wont have the experience to judge visual clarity until you’ve been drawing comics for a while imo..)

5) Don’t draw ahead, draw those inbetweenies.

“Inbetweenies” are the pages for the “boring” ones. They are also usually the most common KIND of page. Its the pages that are necessary, but “inbetween” the action. The impact moments in a scene, ect. You gotta draw them. They’re always gonna be there. They’re the pages where maybe, the character is walking somewhere, thinking, ect. The after impact from an action.. There’s a million examples, but hopefully you’ll understand what I mean when I say they’re both necessary pages/panels, sometimes so mundane/redundant, but also required for telling the story.. As a comic is a sequence of images. This is why, the previous advice is also important IMO- because if you really want to “draw every leaf” - maybe you should save that energy and effort for those impact moments that you want to impress the reader with.. And not for the inbetweenies, which are the foundational support, but also not the most important moments. If you conserve your energy a bit, the contrast OF that effort will also pop more. I personally find it funny when I put more effort into a page and end up tricking my readers into thinking I got better at drawing, when really i just have been able to draw better and only save it for moments like this instead of always.

Also, when I say don’t draw ahead.. I mean I draw each page at a time before going to the next one. I have no idea if this is an unusual practice or not, and I know a lot of people will draw their chapters/episodes/whatever in sections like sketch/ink/color/ect.. But I personally draw and finish page by page, unless its the thumb/sketch stage. Even then, i don’t go ahead much. I think that you can control flow/pacing better by doing chapters all at once of course, I see that as a benefit. But i also think that makes things very overwhelming and can also result in a lack of flexibility if something isn’t working. No matter HOW much planning you do- comics are always going to have an aspect of IMPROVISATION with the result you get in the end. There are way too many factors in play to be in complete control of all of them and always know the result of the reading experience. SO for me, this technique is easier and has been something that continues to get me to working effectively. Plus, rumiko takahashi said that’s what she does. And i think she has some of the best visual flow/compositions in comics. So that’s what I do.

I could write more personal advice or rules that i follow..but I think those are the ones I find are the most important to me anyway. Of course, comics are a strange medium and not everything that works for me will work for you. That’s all for now.. Bye bye…!
