Winterberry Holly - Ilex verticillata

When I was a child, In winter we would drive past the misty floodplains of the Rockaway river where I would see cattails and red berries pop among the snow-covered forests. These charismatic plants are winterberries.

The term winterberry is often applied to specific members of the holly family, the term can refer to I. laevigata, I. montana and certain asian species as well like I. serrata. Like the name implies the winterberry is attributed to it's bright red fruit (female plants only) present from early autumn into winter. These are relatively common species in the nursery trade, although typically you'll find more compact showy cultivars than you would see naturally.

Winterberry plants are deciduous, understory shrubs, usually found in moist-flooded soils, which can grow up to 10 feet in height. In nature it's very common to find these growing in wetlands in semi-dense stands, they enjoy acidic soils however can thrive in neutral as well. These can be found basically the entire eastern US east of the Mississippi river.

To propagate winterberries: growing from seed is relatively difficult and I've had no luck, they need quite a few seasons to sprout. Cuttings in spring take relatively easily but in the wild its most common for plants to spread via colonal rooting.

The berries are sometimes confused with an aggressive invasive vine oriental bittersweet (orange-yellow multi-bunch fruits), you can easily distinguish them by paying attention to the stem structure from which they derive, and the winterberries single red round fruits which attach to the buds of branches.

Medea is known in most stories as an enchantress and is often depicted as a priestess of the goddess Hecate or a witch.

Medea is a 1969 Italian film directed by Pier Paolo Pasolini, based on the ancient myth of Medea.

Medea is the goddess of illusion. Modern Day Medea = (MEDIA).

Hollywood is the #1 hotspot for creating media. Why is it called Hollywood? Well, there is a tree called the Holly Tree or holly plant.

The druids regarded the Holly Tree as a symbol of fertility and eternal life, thought to have magical powers. Today, Christians have adopted the Hollywood as a symbol for Christmas.

The sharp leaves are said to symbolize the crown of thorns worn by Christ, while the berries represent his blood.

There are many other native holly plants in the USA as well.

Winterberry holly (Ilex verticillata), Japanese holly (Ilex crenata), American holly (Ilex opaca) and Inkberry (Ilex glabra). There are more than 400 species of Ilex worldwide.

The plant was traditionally used by Native Americans and Euro-American colonists to make an infusion containing caffeine and theobromine. This drink went by different names, such as cassina, beloved drink or white drink among natives and "Carolina Tea", or "South Seas Tea" among colonists.

Native Americans used Yerba Mate (holly plant) in many ways, including as a social ritual, in religious ceremonies, and as a natural remedy.

Facts about Lyca:

• she has the ability to change her hair and eye color, though she likes to keep her hair white and her eyes purple.

• She was created to look and feel and to be mistaken for a human, but she is mechanical and is "human" in the way that her consciousness or soul was taken from a living person and put into her. (She is not that person though, she is someone entirely new)

• she holds great animosity towards the one who created her.

A gorgeous winterberry (Ilex verticillata), one of Appalachia’s native deciduous hollies, lights up the alder swamp at the West Virginia Botanic Garden.  The shrub’s winter regalia is particularly stunning against the snow.

This is another of the plants that I found around the Harvard Museum of Natural History.

I believe this specimen is an Ilex verticillata, or Winterberry. It was notable to me for its similarities with the Cornus florida, but with added attractive red berries and more pointed leaves.

The tree enjoys full to partial sun and can thrive in USDA hardiness zones from 3 to 9. It also likes medium to wet acidic soil. Although Massachusetts is part of the plant’s native range, it is primarily found in boggy or swampy regions. This makes an urban context visually out of its native soil (though conditionally still favorable for growth). From June to July, it produces greenish-white flowers in addition to the attractive red berries.

In garden design, it is usually sought after for hedge definition as well as rain gardens.
