Yoooo this is so cool! The idea of breaking the regions down into seasons/hair colors is very interesting—especially with the special 5th season—and makes the map very pretty!

I’m also very intrigued by the different peoples described for each area. Lots of animal-like-people, it seems.

yeah i wasn’t kidding when i said these would be coming soon. <- haha funny joke marshall. so!! remember when i said that this post would be coming out last weekend? guess whose tablet broke a few days after saying that! so sorry for the delay!! this is long overdue. here’s a link to the drive, as always! everything in this part of the update should be in the miscellaneous folder (outside of the menu icons, which are in the menu folder. wauaua).

so! all of this was already done by the time i posted the enemies. the delay isn’t *entirely* because of the tablet issues, i just managed to get distracted by making: even more redraws! i’d say new update soon but after what happened last time i shouldn’t jinx myself. but! almost All of the art for the initial mod release is done!!!! exciting!!!!!!

hey did you know that the original teleport map is slightly off center. did you know that. that’s not the case for the redraw for the record but it did make things a little harder. despite that, i think you can tell i was having fun with the dormont part of the map. i would’ve put more detail into the house, but we never really get a more detailed look at it??? and i didn’t want to make assumptions. so that part’s just traced from the original 👍. anyways shoutout to the clocktower being Curved for whatever reason

outside of those, all of the added art is actually just spritework. i didn’t know this at first, but there’s a TON of copies of sprites from the icon set. Basically Everywhere. so those are added now! and should work properly! also added a few sprites that were Missing from my original batch. not going to put them all here, but a few Important ones (which i actually had to make new art for) are the rock paper scissors cheatsheet, the Larger versions of the craft signs (used in the calamité fight and. probably somewhere else idk), and the craft signs for the tutorial kid fight!

aaaand i think that’s it! for stuff from this update. yeah no there’s more coming buddy. my tablet already broke one time this week there’s no way it’s happening twice. i’m not working on portraits Just Yet (though the temptation has been There), but i’ve got the title screens, a few backgrounds, and the ending cgs done! along with a few other assorted cgs sketched out. because im out of my fucking mind. so, uh, see you soon!! enjoy!!

Am I the asshole for refusing to take my girlfriends map route?

My girlfriend loves to take me on a different of adventures throughout the world, her main favorites were taking simple walks that would eventually end up at the other side of the city. She drags me along with her always even if i had told her multiple times that it's too early to go for a walk. My girl, sets her alarm at 3am and wakes me up to go outside and walk with her.

About a week ago, she broke the news to ME, that she booked us a hiking trip. Me being myself, i usually laze around the house and get some sleep, so hiking isn't definitely my thing. But either way she bought us 2 hiking tickets up a snowy mountain.

When we had 4 days prior before setting out for hiking, she immediately drew a map from the place we were going. I admit that she is definitely good at drawing maps, but i studied them and absolutely got confused. I gave up on doing so.

We arrived to our destination and she immediately grabbed her map out of the bag, she tried pulling me to the right side of the mountain but there was a map hanging by the wall of the cabin shop saying that the left side is where the mountain hiking is located. I talked to her about it and she told me that the map they made is probably fake.

We got into a small argument and i parted ways with her towards the left side and i fot lost, I was reported as missing and a group of search party was launched to get me back, Now I'm back with my girlfriend's hold and she's mad at me for not taking her word. We talked to the cabin shop for the map route and found out that there was no such thing as a cabin back on the mountain.

My girlfriend is so beautiful, she absolutely deserves the world.

Literally shes the best, I don't know what i even did to desrve her presence besides me, but im sos so thankful for it. Everyday i wake up next to her it feels like im blessed eith yet another peaceful and loving day knowing that everything is complete with her by my side.

She smells so good that it stays on my sense of smell, the way her fragrance litter her room and immediately smells like her once i enter is so peaceful and sweet. I absolutely love her perfume, i bought one of them to keep on my room and i spray tiny bits of it on me whenever she's not with me now.

I seldom carry her little gifts in my small bag whenever im away from her to remind me of her presence, her perfume never leave my hands. My shelves are filled to the brim with her godly scented perfumes, her perfume is wuite expensive yet it doesn't matter. Her little girts are kept in a glass covered shelf to ensure protection and will never be broken.

I love gifting her her favorite items and seeing the cutest smiles on her face, i really really wish to spend my eternity with her forever. @Your.Name i love you so much😭😭

Any recommendations for places that's suitable for a date? I'm planning to propose to my dear girlfriend, we've been together for a solid 6 years and a half. We've talked about getting married and i think today is the day i propose to her. I can't think of any place thats perfect enough to do so.

Anything that would have a good view or maybe a little cute cat cafe beside it would be fine, I'm thinking of a little elegant theme..or maybe a little cute one? I really cant decide, i contacted my brothera but they couldn't take a single thing serious. Please actually take me seriously😭

finally, all the arm and spirit abilities- for the first half of the game (rauru) and for the second half with the shiekah arm replacing links arms instead and the spirit abilities gained through ganondorf

(please excuse my handwriting and sometimes repeated info on the first two, i lost motivation/patience at the end and couldnt get myself to basically redo it all from scratch just to make it a bit more cleaner)

note, the camera rune is unconnected to the arm, its the shiekah stone copy link has (zelda carries the one from botw, a copy was attempted to be made for link but it lacks all runes except the camera, the map and its teleportation, and journal/archive)

note for the heal effects of some spirit abilities- im also reworking the healing system, making it more like the older games, so healing isnt as easy and much more restricted, thus making those effects of spirit abilities more valuable ( lil potion icon on the d pad will act a little bit like in skyward sword, opens your limited selection of healing items and if chosen link switches to holding it and letting you consume it with -a- while walking around in real time- to avoid more pausing and mass healing on regular items while in menu)

additional note, the automatic recharging of the magic meter depending on the environment gives you a reliable but less abusable way of using abilities and allows for even more creative dungeon/challenge design by using it effectively- it works by absorbing magic from its surroundings, so if its an area with little magic it recharges slower, if its a very spiritual or healthy place it will recharge faster, it can be used to make things more challenging and also as subtle storytelling (example, theres a graveyard with the magic energy around being off the charts, even if there are no spirits to see, it could hint at the people buried not having died peacefully, no matter what their gravestone says...)

the usage of magic and how much the different abilities cost also allows for a much more dynamic fighting style for players to choose and try out, balancing them all out with their cost instead of a fixed timer, and the recharging beign affected by the environment perhaps forcing players that favor high cost magic abilities to use the lower cost ones for example, or not being able to charge one up bc the enemy is too fast and doesnt give you enough time to charge it

about half of the small overworld dungeons (not shrines) are also locked/inaccessible for the first half and new quests appear as the second half commences- together with the additional changes raurus return brings with it (sonau buildings, enemies being mostly cosntructs that he summoned etc) and whole set of new abilities giving you a fresh new way to play while (hopefully) not making you feel too restricted for the first half

do you have any tips on starting a new story (or writing in general)? actually beginning it is always a struggle even when i have so many ideas

yes!

1) if u have an idea,

write it down in ur notes app or a google doc page. This could be an overall trope or plot that you have in mind playing about or a specific backstory for a character you want to build upon/an alternative setting or universe you wanna have a go at

This could mean that if random quotes or dialogue/scenes play in your mind, WRITE IT DOWN. Even if it’s a random out of place thing that comes to ur mind in relation to the story, jotting it down when it’s fresh in ur mind will help paint that picture for u again and help when u wanna write

2) you don’t have to have the entire story mapped out in ur mind from start to end,

it becomes tedious to write and your mind becomes too scattered to piece things together. You should of course have any major plot points in your mind to help map the story but during your planning process it is more than okay to not have every little detail drawn up. It also makes it more fun to come up with stuff as you go and you end up inadvertently tying plot holes together

3) PINTEREST

World building can be so difficult sometimes even if u know exactly what it is you want. But it is so smart to create pinterest boards to personify the ideas and images in your mind. It helps immerse you into your world even more and it’s also okay to make boards to idealize characters and their personalities via pinterest as well. places and people become easier to describe!

4) DO NOT EDIT AS U GO

Ik this is so tricky because u want everything to be perfect but pls for the sake of ur love of writing and mental health, DO NOT edit as you are writing the first draft. You will end up fixating so harshly on a specific paragraph and will not want to even continue

What i like to do and what works best is writing everything out once and not looking back at my work/chapter until i have completed the first draft. Then i make myself a nice cup of coffee to begin the proofreading process, THIS is when i edit the fuck out of the story and fix lines/descriptions

Reading out loud helps, especially with pointing out dialogue errors to fix them to seem more human

This is always my fav process in writing because i end up forgetting certain things i write so i feel like im a first time reader myself!

5) when starting a chapter, make a short list of certain things u want happening

This makes connecting plot points easier and utilizing characters easier as well. It simplifies the thinking process of that very chapter

6) if u are having trouble with a scene,

it’s okay to skip it or rush through it, u can always come back to it once you know how you’ve lain out the rest of the chapter, making it easier to complete that scene you couldn’t earlier

7) if u have a certain set of ideas drawn up

it’s okay to not utilize all of them if they don’t fit in the story. These are unfortunate sacrifices you must make as an author, it’s all for the greater good

hi!! i hope you don't mind the ask ^^ i was wondering about how you got started with sprite ripping, specifically through tinke, because im trying to learn myself so i can rip as much as i can from the d.gray-man ds game and well..... it's definitely quite the process and im really unfamiliar with these things ;;^_^ i actually found your blog while searching for information which is why i thought to send an ask :0

Hey! I'm pretty flattered you thought to ask me!

So, I'm gonna go through several games, because it highly depends on the game and what you see. That way you have a lot of examples to work with.

Let's start with Death Note: Successor to L as that is the game I'm most know for ripping the sprites from. It is also a bit unstraight forward, which helps some things in explaining.

Upon opening the .nds file in Tinke, this is what we see.

Locate the "data" folder, click the +.

See this data.bin? Despite its icon, we do not want to unpack it.

Instead, we want to Open as > compress

You'll get a popup window called "Select Offset". Don't do anything; just click "Accept".

After a second of waiting, suddenly we have this huge list of new .bins! So where do we find the images?

Scroll until you find the LAST [IPAL] .bin. Everything under it will be the game's sprites.

So, everything under "data_15108.bin [IPAL]" in this case. So...where are the images?

Under it is data_15109.bin. And under that, data_15110.bin. Open as > compress them both.

Based on icon, we can see we have a palette file and a tile file. First, we have to open the palette file as a palette.

Now, let's see what happens if we open the tile file now... (as a tile, of course)

Well...that doesn't look right. For reference, this is the sprite in question:

So, why does it look like that?

What if we manually adjusted the width? You can hold down the up or down arrow to see it change in real time.

But setting it to 128.... (half)

Looks about the right size, just...cut off. We'd have to adjust the height, too.

Or, we can try opening it as a map instead and see if that helps. So let's try opening this file as map instead.

Ah! Did all the work for us! But...where's the other half of the sprite? And why are the colors weird?

Let's Open as > compress the .bin below...

...Well, there's the other half. So, you'll have to stitch them together. Ok, what about the colors?

This is where the palette comes in. Tinke will use the colors of the last palette you viewed. Thankfully, we know this is Light's palette since the palette file precedes all his sprites. But why is it showing up wonky?

See these bold colors up top? This is our issue. We need only one of these bold colors that is clearly not supposed to be a color in Light's sprite. Why? Because that will be the color of the sprite's background (which we can edit out later.)

See this start byte button? Keep clicking up, you will see the squares slowly move backwards (idk how to describe it, just hold down the up button and see for yourself). Do it until only the last bold color remains. Cyan, here.

Now, let's go reopen the image as map.

Perfect! You can even click that "Transparency" button to turn the bold color transparent.

Now, all you have to do is click "Export"

Here's the output:

Of course, the same will have to be done with the sprite below it, and then you'll have to stitch them together in any editing software or art software (MS paint, firealpaca are both free) and there you go! the sprite :)

Now, not all games are like this. So let's look at another.

Let's do Pokemon Black 2 (this is the JP version but as far as I know, both games have the same file paths)

Already, this looks WAY different. No Data folder. Just an "a" folder, with a million sub folders. How are we ever gonna find what we want?

Well, there's 2 answers. One is Google. I googled "Pokemon Black 2 sprite files locations" and got this answer:

So a > 0 > 0 > 4...

But what if Google doesn't have an answer?

Well...Sorry to say, at that point, it's a game of trial and error. You're going to have check everything yourself (that's what I had to do with the Death Note game).

But back to Pokemon. So, I open as > compress....

A little different here, too. But If I had to guess, 4_19.RLCN is our palette, and 4_20.bin (after we open as compress) will be our image.

Right I am. But opening the image as map, it still looks weird. I'll mess with the width - that usually works.

Just a few clicks of the down arrow and we got Bulbasaur.

However, this palette doesn't look like Bulbasaur at all. There's no green or anything...maybe the actual palette it at the bottom there?

So it is! You can tell just by looking at the colors that this is meant to be for Bulbasaur. The greens, blues, and reds for the mouth. Now, the question is how to get the right palette on it...

Unlike Light's palette from earlier, this one is much smaller, so we can tell the palette size is actually 16/16, not 256/1

Just switch it over.

I did 40 for the offset again, as this seems to be a regular number used for palette offsets.

And wouldn't you know it!!

Okay, I've hit image limit so i'll stop here. But I hope this helps. Some games are encrypted or use file types not recognized by Tinke, so if you're having additional troubles you can message me again :) otherwise I hope this helps. When in doubt just try opening everything and anything lol.

Textile Time: House of Dragons Season Two Opening Credits

It took nearly 2 years for House of Dragons to come back to us and yes, this post is a bit late with only one episode left of the season 😬 but I’m trying to embrace the "it's better late than never," and I'm working on being an im-perfectionist these days, so here we go.

A rush of excitement ran through me like an electric jolt as I heard the first notes of epic opening credits theme.

I settled in on the couch and to my utter delight, I saw not the expected template of blood spreading rapidly while fueling the mechanical architectural map of last season and GoT but a fabric becoming blood stained as it is digitally embroidered, threading a chronicle of Targaryen history (updated throughout the season) and expanding before our eyes.

What makes the new opening credits so stunning beyond the Targaryen content is the method in which the captivating digital embroidered effect, coined “threadification,” is executed by design studio yU+co’s 3D division. Kudos for taking a medieval art and a modern art form and created a striking Medieval-esque masterpiece.

The success of which can only be credited to the commitment in understanding the threading process and how it could be transformed into a digital media.

I embroider myself and am self-taught. It was something I picked up more than a year ago, so this truly hit the spot for me.

Research pays off

yU+co’s design team studied the embroidery process from the Game of Thrones Tapestry and examined the Apocalypse Tapestry. It comes as no surprise that the GoT show runner would pitch The Bayeux Tapestry as inspiration for yU+co. 

The Bayeux Tapestry is not a tapestry!, it is a 1,000 year old embroidery narrative depicting the series of events leading up to the Norman conquest of England in 1066, fought between William the Conqueror, Duke of Normandy and Harold, Earl of Wessex, later King of England.

Using this real world pictorial testimony of medieval war as a guide for the House of Dragons opening scenes only adds to the credibility and stellar execution.

Now a confession -

I was only this many years old when I found out about the existence of the Game of Thrones Tapestry😳. I thought I was a fan.. but apparently I was living under a rock because how did I miss this amazing piece of GoT content and art???!?

I believed the new opening credit sequence was completely original, as in no embroidery existed in the GoT world until HoD’s season two opening. Nevertheless, the opening credits are still amazing, still impressive, still educating people about the middle ages and how not dark they were.

Embroidery vs Tapestry

Magaret Wade Labarge in her article, "Stitches in Time: Medieval embroidery in its Social Setting," defines embroidery as:

"..the art of applying decoration by needle and thread to the surface of a piece of woven cloth, usually called the "ground." It is an optional decoration worked after the while weaving process, including the dyeing and finishing, has been completed."

When we look at the Bayeux Tapestry we clearly see the richly colored stitches embroidered on top of a cloth. The “design” is independent of the weave.

So why does this misnomer matter? Because knowledge is power or maybe not, but you never know when this topic will come up at a dinner party or when you might bump into Chris Helsworth.

But really why should you care? First of all, it's important not to take things at face value, like The Bayeux Tapestry. And also this visual record is an extraordinary piece of history. Do you know how difficult it is to find textiles that survive, let alone in this condition?

The Norman Conquest was a big deal in European History. French speaking Normans ended up conquering England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland and even got to Southern Italy and Sicily! And, in doing so, they brought a wealth of new words, thousands of which are still used by us English speakers today.

I jolted awake from a bump on the road looking around in my seat on the bus seeing it was morning. rubbing my eyes to get of any crust or eye boogers to look out the window seeing many trees passing by until I saw it. 'Welcome to Gravity Falls.' it read. "No going back now." I told myself looking away to my bags that held my clothes, phone charger, and a letter for my dad along with other papers. If I can still call him that after I haven't seen him in seven years. I never knew much about him except mom telling me of how brilliant he is and unique in his own way. Mom always told me stories about him and how their relationship was before I was born including his family like his brother Stanley and his baby sister Shermie. that all we knew about so far. "Gravity Falls." said the bus driver. I got up walking off the bus seeing the small town once the bus left behind me to wo knows where. Which I don't really care about. All that matters is now I can finally see my dad. I walked into town taking everything in slowly to know where to go later on and saw a board of holding the map of Gravity Falls then took out the old postcard with the address on it. "Need help there little lady?" said a voice. I turned to see a tall thin man in uniform looking down at me with a smile. "Yeah. Im looking for my father. HIs name is Stanford Pines." said I told him after putting the post card in my pocket of my jacket. "He lives deep in the woods at the Mystery Shack. Let me take ya to him. I was just on way there to see what else he found." said the man. "That'd be great. I'm Nicole." I introduced myself shakng his hand. "Im Deputy Durland. Come with me. My partner Sheriff Blurbs knows hi sway around." said Durland. He walked away with me behind him to a diner where a man in a police like uniform came out with donuts with a smile in his face.

"Hey Blurbs. Got new girl who needs a ride to the Mystery Shack. She going to see her Daddy." said Durland. "Alright then hop in the back and we'll get going. Durland I got your favorite. Rainbow Sprinkles!" soad Blurbs as Durland cheered. I couldn't help laugh a little before getting in the back of the police car with my bags close to me. Blurbs took the wheel and Durland next to him munching on the donut like a happy toddler. "So how long you staying?" said Blurbs. "This is the place I can go to. My mom died just three weeks ago and told me to come here." I explained then heard Durland sniffing. "im so sorry about that. I know what is it . . . like to loose your mommy and daddy." said Blurbs sniffing too. I looked at both men trying to hold back the water works before pulling over in front of a house like building with Mystery Shack on the roof with the S on the ground. "Do you guys need some air?" I asked. "We'll be there in a minute just go without us." said Blurds. I got out with my stuff going inside seeing allot of taxidermies and other things when I walked further in. Boom! "Welcome to the Mystery Shack. Im Stanford Pines. Follow me and I'll all sorts of weird things." said a man who appeared from the smoke bomb that was thrown. He had brown hair under a hat wearing a suit and holding a cane in his left hand. I kept on looking at him closely taking in his features from the way mom described from his face down his fingertips then it clicked. "You don't know me. Do you?" I said. "Excuse me?" said the man looking confused. "Sorry. I'm Nicole Rivers-Pines. I'm here to live with you?" I explained seeing the shock look in his eyes. "Okay this is some kind of joke right." said the man looking around. "Im serious. I got my mom's will and letter before she died." I told him while taking them out. "Hey Sta-" Blurbs walk in but got pushed out. "Sorry closed for renovations. Soos take the day off." said the man to the janitor of a teenager. "Got it dude." said Soos dropping the broom and left through the front door. 

We got to the living room having a seat on the couch facing each other. "What do you know about Stanford?" Said the man. "Not much except from what my mom told me and about his work and his siblings. You must be Stanley?" I said. "What if i was?" Said Stanley. "Then you'd have six fingers on each hand but you dont." I explained. "You're a smart kid. So how come he didnt mention you?" Said Stanley. "Ask him yourself. He left after i turned one years old after having a loud argument with my mom." I shrugged. "Where is your mom?" Said Stanley. "She died three weeks ago to a brain surgery gone wrong. They couldnt get the tumor out in time what the doctors told me." Handing the papers to him letting him read through it. Stanley sighed rubbing his neck before looking at me in sympathy. "Im sorry to tell this but theres something you should know about what happened to my brother." Said Stanley. After he explained everything to me about what happened before showing me around the house taking me up the attic where ill be staying. "Im gonna order us some pizza. Want anything kid?" Said Stanley looking at her. "Im good, Uncle Stan." Said Nicole. "Heres the thing. Im gonna need you to keep whatever i tell you here. No one knows that im still alive." Said Stanley. "Got it. So i guess i have to call you, Dad then?" Said Nicole. "We'll see how far this goes and sorry about your mom. I bet we wouldve gotten along." Said Stanley. "Who knows." Said Nicole. "If you need me im gonna go some stuff down stairs." Said Stanley before leaving her alone. Nicole laid on her back taking a polaroid photo of her and Claire at the hospital room just hours before the surgery. She looked at how healthy Claire looked besides having the IVs connected and had her black straight hair up in a messy bun. Nicole placed the photo by the window seeing something dart away making her sit up to take a better look. She opened the window looking to see what was that she saw then heard a loud scream. Nicole ran out of the room going downstairs to the living room seeing Stanley hoping on his foot.

"Son of a bitch! Oh Nicky. Didnt see you there." Said Stanley noticing her standing there. "I heard you scream." Said Nicole. "Im fine just stubbed by toe against skull thing here." Said Stanley gesturing the one near the recliner. "Looks like you stubbed real bad by how swollen and red it is." Said Nicole looking at it. "Its nothing. Just a FUCK!" Stanley yelled out after taking a step. "Let me take a look. Mom was a trained nurse." Said Nicole having him sit. She kneeled down to get a better look seeing no sign if a broken bone and saw the skin on tip is open with a bit of blood. "Your big toe has a cut from i can see pass the blood. Im going to get the first aid and after that you're gonna have ice this." Said Nicole. "I'll be fine. Just grab me a beer from the fridge and I'll be good to go." Said Stanley. "Fine but you cant walk until i find if you need stitches. Otherwise your foot is going to infected where its going to amputated. Want that?" Said Nicole looking at him. "You're acting like my brother now. First aid is at the museum and the other under the kitchen cabinet next to the sink." Sais Stanley watching her leave. He groaned in pain propping it on the skull and turned the TV on to a duck show that was new. Once Nicole came with the white box working Stanley's toe a knock was heard. "Pizza delivery." Said a voice. Nicole walked to the front door seeing a teen with split blonde and black hair with sharp blue eyes looking at her wearing a uniform with a bomber jacket. "Here you go Arrow. On the house." Said the guy handing her the box. "Shut the door before he asks for a tip!" Stanley shouted making her turn away to look at him. "Sorry a-where did he go?" Said Nicole looking to see no sign of the guy before shutting the door. 'Weird.' She thought bringing the pizza over and went to the telephone. "What are you doing?" Said Stanley after grabbing himself a slice. "Calling an ambulance." Said Nicole holding it up to her ear. "Hi. My Dad busted his big toe and looking bad." She says. "Okay thanks." She told the operator then hanged up. "Dad huh?" Said Stanley. "You 'died' remember." Said Nicole taking a slice too. "Yeah. Yeah just get my beer would ya." Said Stanley as Nicole looked at the show going on.

part one: the first day

"FUCK" , i yell when i awake to see my alarm clock isn't plugged in. i must have forgotten to plug it in last night when i was setting up my room. im gonna be late for my first day of school. great. i rush to the millions of moving boxes in my room trying to remember which ones have my clothes in them, finally i mange to find a box with a folded up Tshirt and decide to wear that and the leggings i slept in. i throw on the Tshirt and run into the bathroom to brush my teeth and hair. "first day of my new school and im going to show up a total mess. amazing.", i think to myself while i spit out the tooth paste in my mouth and see the knots all over my head. i grab my brush and hurry back into my room to put my shoes on and get my book bag together. "MOM!!", i yell while brushing my hair and putting my folders in my bag. no response. great she's probably passed out downstairs drunk, or hasn't come home from last night yet. i don't blame her though, if i had found out my husband was cheating on me and lost all my money in the divorce i would be drinking away my feelings too. i just hate that it caused us to move here. the fucking middle of nowhere in las Vegas. why couldn't we have moved to someplace cool like New York? or just someplace where the sun isn't beating down on me like it wants to fry me and eat me for lunch. whatever, no point in being mad right now, i need to grab my keys and get to school. i go downstairs to see my mom passed out on the couch with a bottle of tito's and lifetime blaring on the tv. no time to worry about that now. i find my keys laying on the kitchen counter and rush out the door. i hop in my truck (well, my mom and me's truck) and head on my way to school. joining a new school three months into the school year as a junior, who knows nobody in this awful town shouldn't be hard, right? i look up on google maps where it is and learn it's only 20 minutes away from my house, not too far of a drive. gosh, its already 11:30am, i'm so fucked. i pull into the school parking lot and quickly run into the double doors at the front of the building. i spot the front office on my right and make my way in there, the small lady behind the desk looks up from her computer at me. "name?", she says like she's dealt with more late passes then she wanted to this morning. "Lucy Gardener, I'm a new student here and-", she cuts me off, "yes, miss gardener, you're a junior correct? here's your schedule and here's your late pass.". she pulls out a small green peice of paper from here desk drawer and writes, my name, the date, the time, and her signature on it before handing it to me. awesome, i'm gonna have to show up in the middle of class and stop the lesson to give this to my teacher. she reaches into the printer and gives me a list with my name on the top and a bunch of classes with times next to them. "right now you should be in....3rd period, english.", the lady said pausing to squint at her computer, "room 224. down the main hall and to your left.". "thanks.", i say stuffing my schedule in my bag and walking out of the office. i follow her directions and head down the main hall and to the left, until i see room 224. fuck, ok ok, just go in there, give the slip to your teacher, and pray he doesn't make me introduce myself to the class. i open the class door and immediately all heads turn to me. i can feel my cheeks burning red as i walk to the man in his mid 40s standing in front of the whiteboard. "sorry." i say handing him the slip and turning away to find a seat towards the back of the class room, just as i thought you may get away with say nothing else, he calls you back up front. "Lucy? you're our new student right? come up here and tell us a little about yourself please.", he says with a huge smile on his face. you've gotta be fucking kidding. i turn back to him and walk back up front. "hi i'm lucy, um i just moved here from New Orleans.", i hear slight laughter coming from two boys in the back of the classroom.

"can i go sit now?", i say turning towards the teacher. "well it's great to have you here lucy, i look forward to getting to know you, i think there may be a seat next to theo. theo, raise your hand so lucy knows where to go.". i see a tall boy with shaggy blonde hair raise his hand and realize it was one of the boys who were giggling. i walk towards the desk that the teacher was referring to, and see that it’s actually right in between the two boys that were giggling. how wonderful, this should be soooo fun. i sit down and immediately hear the blonde boy with glasses on my right giggling. damn, do i really look that bad today. the one with black hair is just staring so intensely at me, i feel his eyes burning holes in my head. i guess i came just at the right time though, cause about two minutes after i sit down i hear the bell ring. "anddd that's lunch.", i hear the teacher say as i stand up and grab my bag. i let out a sigh of relief, at least i can just go sit in the bathroom and look at my phone for the lunch period. i'm walking to the door when someone behind me calls out, "lucy!". i turn around to see the blonde boy with his mouth slightly open and the boy with black hair standing behind him smirking. "i-it's lucy right?" he says stuttering over his words. "yea. you're theo, right?", i say hoping that i heard the teacher correctly and didn't just call him the wrong name. "ding ding ding! and this," he pulls the boy with black hair in front of him like he's showing me a puppy or something, "is boris. he, well we, were wondering if maybe you wanted to hang with us during lunch? you know, since you're new.", theo says in a almost shy manner. do i want to have lunch with them? is it a trick? weren't they literally just laughing at me? if they didn't look so raggedy i would've guessed that they were two popular boys messing with me. the dark haired one, sorry, "boris", speaks up. "we have weed." , he said in a whispering tone.

i'm not sure because his voice was so low, but i think he may be Australian? that doesn't matter, they had weed, i need something to calm my first day anxieties. "i'm down, should've led with the weed." i say looking at both of them as theo looked at boris with a smile. boris walked in front of me, "follow me.". boris and theo led me out the school doors, into the parking lot, and to a beat down 1985 volvo. this looks sketchy i'm not gonna lie. the car is rusted, missing a headlight, and theo has to crawl through the driver side door to get to the passenger seat. let's just hope and pray they don't kill me and dump my body in the nevada desert somewhere. boris opens the back seat door for me and i crawl in, as soon as i'm in the car i know they're not lying about the weed. the smell is so strong that i imagine they smoke in this car everyday and don't know what air freshener is. boris gets in the drivers seat, shuts the door, and immediately opens the glove box. "shit bor, did you not roll another one this morning? it's gonna take me at least 20 minutes to get this shit done.", theo said holding a small baggie of weed, and a pack of joint papers. these kids don't even know how to roll a joint. i snicker, "let me see it.", i say holding out my hand. theo and boris looked at eachother suspiciously. "oh come on, let me see it i can get her done in 5-10 minutes tops.", i start making a "gimme" motion with my hand. theo hands the bag and papers over to me. it doesn't even take me ten minutes and im done. "here", i say, passing the joint to boris. they inspect it carefully until boris looks back at me and smiles, "nice job new girl.". i do a small bow, "thank you thank you very much, now light that shit.", i say looking at the lighter in theo's hand. theo hands the lighter over to boris, who starts to touch the flame to the tip of the joint and takes a long hit. he lets the smoke out, coughing as he does so. boris takes another hit then looks at me. he gives the joint to me with a grin, "new girl gets next hit, eh?", he says glancing over to theo. "that's fine with me man.", says theo, who's too focused on trying to get the radio to work.

boris hands the joint over to me. please please please don't let me get too high and embarrass myself God. i mean look, im an avid smoker, but after taking a break from weed for like 6 days because of all the moving shit i had to do, i’m definitely gonna get really fried. i take a long drag of the joint and hold the smoke it for about 7 seconds before exhaling with a sigh. "fuck that's nice.", i say passing the joint to theo and leaning back into the seat. "so new girl, where do you live?", boris says with a thick accent. "i don't really know the name of the street, i just got here last night. it's like desert something.", i say trying to remember what the street is called . boris raises his eyebrows as he grabs the joint theo's passing to him, "desert end drive?", he says before taking a long hit of the joint. "yea actually, that's where i am.". the two boys exchange looks. "no way, that's where we live." , says theo almost giddy with excitement. ok this is good. at least i have two people that smoke in my neighborhood. "do you live more towards the front of the neighborhood or the back?", theo says. boris passes me the joint and i take two quicks hits while they stare at me with anticipation. "way in the back, it takes like 3 minutes of me driving just to get out of the neighborhood.", i say shifting my eyes between the two of them. theo looks at boris as i hand him the joint. "i bet you're right by bor then.", he says smiling a child like smile. "oh shit that's nice.", i say trying to not look excited. i mean boris is cute. i don't really know him at all. and that accent, maybe it's just the weed talking, but that accent is so fucking sexy. "what's your accent?", i blurt out, not so shy anymore from the high i'm feeling. boris smirks at me, "i mean i've lived in a lot of places so i have little accent from everywhere, but the one you probably hear the most, is russian or ukraine maybe?", he says, "my english isn't perfect, potter says i miss words sometimes, but i do pretty well, eh?", he says taking the joint from theo. i let out a laugh, "dude you're so right, he does kinda look like harry potter!", which makes both me and boris burst out into laughter.

"hardy har har, soooo funny.", says theo trying his best to hold back a smile. we sit, passing around the joint and just talking and getting to know each other for about the next 15 minutes until all that's left of it is the filter. "i don't wanna go back in.", i say as the laughter dies down in the car from a stupid thing theo said. "well you're in luck, me and bor usually skip forth period anyways.", theo says turning his head to look at me and smile. "yes! come with new girl, will be fun. i have vodka at house.",  boris says with excited eyes. "your parents won't mind?", i say, "nah, only live with my dad and he'll be gone for next few days.", says boris as he puts the bag of weed and papers back in his glove box. "alright, im down. but fuck, i'm way too stoned to drive right now, i haven't smoked for like a week cause of the move.", i say, remembering just how high i am. "give me your keys, im not too fucked.", says boris holding out his hand, "potter can drive my car, he does all the time.". i look at boris for a second, before pulling out my keys and placing them in his hand. trust me if i thought this boy was too faded to drive, i would not let him in my truck. but since i'm pretty sure he does this everyday multiple times a day i'm fine with it. especially since, i myself drive while im stoned all the time. well when im not in the middle of an involuntary week long T break i mean. boris hops out of the car and opens my door, extending his hand to me, as theo crawls into the drivers seat. i take boris's hand and hop out of the car. i say a quick thank you and let go of his hand before leading him to my truck. when we get to my car he follows me to the passenger side and opens the door for me. "such a gentleman." , i joke as i put a hand on my heart and hop in the car. "always a gentleman for a pretty lady.", he says back shooting me a quick wink then chuckling. ok he could so get it. i mean he called me pretty, he definitely wants it. no lucy...you two are joking around. he's being polite. don't think anything of it. boris walks to the other side of the car door and hops in the drivers seat, putting the keys in ignition. "let's go get wasted new girl.", he says to me with a smile as he puts the car in drive, and pulls out of the school parking lot. i have a feeling this is going to be fun..

this was harder than it had any right to be and idek if this is any good but it's what i've got. bon appetite.

anyway Nobodies Hero is a fantasy series i've been working on for years, centered around a quest for a dragon and the clusterfuck of destinies-gone-wrong.

the story begins when the quest is already in full swing, when an adventuring party (Atlas, a noble who spent his life seeking adventure; Cecily, his partner in crime + Ahria, a sword-master and faithful wife) arrive in a town that shouldn't exist. (arlet, the only civilisation at the end of the world, my beloved)

we're introduced through the eyes of the towns librarian, an acerbic man with a complicated past (Keika) who the party hires to act as their guide. after he's only slightly guilted into it.

they need an impossible man from an impossible town to get them to an impossible destination. The Mahina Woods are an ancient and terribly magic stretch of woodland staining the bottom of every map of the continent; it's a place no one has ever returned from. It's also the only place that might have anything to say about dragons-- a creature long extinct.

Keika's job is to get them in and out of the woods without any of them dying. He succeeds! That is where his story is supposed to end.

Unfortunately (for more than just him), it is only the beginning; and he finds himself dragged through all manner of ordeals and trials as he struggles to keep up with his new companions while battling his own grief and increasing loss-of-self. (and dealing with falling in love for the first time. loser.)

Nobodies Hero explores a lot of things regarding identity and stories with fixed endings; but my favourite thing about this series is the way it plays with it's own story <3 there are two paths: what was supposed to happen (as written in the stars), and what ends up happening because of one little change to the narrative (the story that i am writing).

NH looks at a story with a fixed ending and decides to see what happens when you switch the unimportant bits around. What if the sister dies instead of the brother? A lamb reared for slaughter is left to wander loose, a scholar is handed a sword too heavy for his hands, an adventurer locks himself behind a desk, a friend becomes a traitor.

The story, unchanging, says that a sibling, a dragon, and a king will die. These are facts no matter what else changes. but I love how everything else has to twist itself into knots to make it happen. (the mordred and ahuru connection still makes me insane)

The world of NH is set within an unnamed continent split into 4 countries: Omos, in the north; Miednic, in the west; Nevmones, in the south; and Kauae in the east. Each has their own histories and relationships with one another, their own customs and cultural norms (poppies as a symbol of death in nevmones you will always be famous) BUT i couldn't fit all of it into the main parts of the story which is why i also created the side quests!! aka: stories that let me play with my world-building without impacting the main series <3

(i don't count the splintering as a side quest seeing as it has A Significant Impact On The Main Series, Actually.)

anyway yeah it has spooky dragon myths and a two-faced ruler, there's a queen who's rumoured to eat babies to remain eternally youthful, love curse shenanigans, found family, magic, humour and romance. like all my writing it explores every kind of love there is: family, friends, romance, the love you hold for your favourite type of bread, for your pets, for your favourite seasons or the way sunlight dances over the scales of a fish.

it seems dramatic, and at times the story is pretty heavy, especially the deeper you get into it but there is always always warmth and kindness and moments that offer a soft landing. a place to rest. i love these characters and this world too much to deny them that.

OH ALSO the gods aren't separate from their domains (eg. the goddess of mountains is quite literally the mountains), magic is called stardust bc it comes from Vietua (the night sky) and magic-wielders are called casters (atlas, cecily + keika are all casters) the terms for shapeshifters (werewolves, selkies etc) and halflings (harpies, centaurs etc) can depend on where you are on the continent, same thing with the undead; other magical creatures that dont fit in those categories are usually called tani or just referred to specifically (RUAHOI MY BELOVEDS)

coloring/rendering tutorial when 🙏🙏🙏

Omg okay…I’ll do my best to explain with an older piece of mine tehee

I always start off by making small thumbnails of a piece just to visualize how I want the composition to look as well as map out lights and darks, so after I finish the sketch I use this thumbnail as reference to make a layer of color beneath the sketch. I like using darker and less saturated colors and I also like referencing baroque paintings for color palettes. Been really interested in the later works of Francisco Goya lately but I digress..this is what the piece looks like after blocking in colors.

For this piece, the colors around the focal point (Nishiki’s face) are brighter and more vibrant while the objects far away are dark and less saturated. It’s rly easy after this part because all that’s left to do is to finish lineart and paint over the sketch ^_^ I ALWAYS color the background first, then when that’s done I make a new layer on top and color the subjects/objects in the foreground. This part is super hard to explain but I build it up by deepening preexisting colors, adding more colorful tones inside of the shadow shapes, and introducing transitionary colors between the light and dark parts. It’s impossible to explain how to render form and shadow because understanding the basics of value/shadow takes a LOT of personal observation and study so I won’t even try here LMFAO. But anyway here’s the piece after the background portion is finished…

And this is what it looks like after ive colored over the sketch completely. I added a lot more definition to the clothes and hair. It’s also important to remember that colors in the background will reflect on the subject (note the blue present in Nishiki’s legs and the dark green present in y0 Nishiki’s arm). Keeping this in mind makes drawings look more real and rich. Only use straight black to shade if the rest of your piece is dark enough to warrant it.

I also use these Procreate brushes which can be found under the Painting and Inking categories respectively

I’m an oil and acrylic painter as well so it’s taboo to me to use blending brushes unless absolutely necessary ^_^ using textured brushes to paint will always yield a better product imo. Anyways after this I create a new layer on top of ALL the others for ‘detail’. I like to go in and further define lights and shadows, add more texture to clothes, draw stray hairs, outline lighter sections, etc. I try not to let myself get too attached to my lineart layer and this detail work tends to cover some of it up. I did a lot of scribbling on this piece in particular and this is how it turned out

What are the origins for Saltburn's clan? Did you generate the clans from a Clan-generator thing or did you think of everything your own, or some other thing?

everything on my own! i've always liked the desert, and after getting back from a particularly rough and disappointing trip to the mojave (i caught covid and then developed a tooth abscess 0/10 dont recommend) i wanted to set a MAP there. i had had a vaguely desert-themed sol map in mind for a few years but hadn't done anything with it, do i decided to work on it. i created a decent amount of concept art and lore for it before deciding that I don't really like hosting maps and wasn't really interested in following thru and putting in the effort. then i thought about creating some fanclans there, and before going to sleep i dm'd myself "mojave clans sunclan briskwater vulturepaw saltsomething" few days later made concept art for those three characters and decided to fully trash my sol map and repurpose it to these new clans. i had intended for vulturepaw to be the main focus but friends loved saltburn so much she won the popularity contest and i started focusing on her, made her a GF and the rest was history. and tbqh i don't know why i didn't think of mojave clans sooner. did a lot of research about the various mojave biomes n such. considered having the clans in Death Valley but decided against it, because that would lend itself to too hostile of an environment and i wanted to showcase the beauty of the desert (that being said, at this point in time im only sharing this with my friends and have no plans on making a comic) i wanted joshua trees, native only to the mojave, but i also wanted saguaro cactuses, and those are native to the sonoran desert n surrounding areas, which luckily touches the mojave, so they live in an imaginary valley where both those biomes meet.

the moonclan plotline came a bit later because i had the plains, the saguaro bloom, and the salt marshes, but wanted a fourth biome for a fourth weird adaption. ended up deciding that they lived in mineshafts, since in the OG sol map script, the tunnels under wind and thunderclan was going to be old mineshafts. then i decided they were nocturnal and would come out around the mountain at night, then i started thinking about how animals evolve in deep remote caves, and i thought that would be fucked up and cool, so i decided that they lived deep in the mines and never came out except for the healer. the lore wrote itself after that.

thennnnn a few weeks after a rewatch of the Fellowship of the ring with my roommate, i couldn't stop thinking about how badass that opening was, and i started imagining the opening prose to my mojave clans, and that became the pre-prologue, which i sketched out for funsies and ppl liked. and . well. genuinely had no plans other than the scraps of lore, only a handful of characters, and had never successfully kept up on a comic before but knew how i wanted to begin, and knew my major plot points and everything else has come to me as i work in the last year.

and then. smooch time with neve!!! i won't go into details since that's still technically spoilers for anyone who hasn't romanced her but wants to. it was very good though :) getting the romance to work actually hasn't been as hard as i expected. i suppose i unknowingly and blindly set myself up perfectly. i chose her to help me at the beginning during solas' ritual, i travelled with her a LOT early-game, i seemed to just stumble into little approvals through dialogue constantly... so really, the slowed relationship progression hasn't been noticeable for me! yay!

i am, however, a little concerned about this

Been getting really hyped for my new D&D campaign... Been a while since I've tried running something longer term than a mini-campaign (sorta drifted across systems and whatnot), and finishing BG3 put me on a forgotten realms kick.

I think as a DM I've had tendencies to want to build EVERYTHING myself and that has often lead me to like... Overcomplicating stuff, getting sick of prepping for games, putting too much work on myself. Think I have a better mindset now - I've sought out other peoples encounter maps so I have a library of those, and forgotten realms being a fleshed out setting will make my life a LOT easier

My players are sending over their character concepts and im already getting a bunch of character hooks written down... session zero later today and starting proper soon after, im so excited!!!

I understand if you just want to bask in the glow of creation for while! I don't want you to think I'm out here asking for more immediately after this gift. But I'm curious and was wondering if you'd ever consider making another version one day where you add the rough places you imagine the homes of all the characters to be based on the info we have? I will be referring to your map for my fics from now on and I'll probably do some cross-referencing with the wiki info on where the characters live and add some notes and dots purely for myself on my own computer and never share it. But yeah, I was wondering if that was something you'd consider doing in the future? 😊

first off, i actually totally am. i’m actually drafting a video right now where i speculate where at least the wheelers and sinclairs live right now, you can catch that on tiktok if you’re into that sort of thing — but really, the point of the video is to roast the hell out of the map because it kinda makes no sense 😂

i will also be making a modified version specifically for my sarge series fics (shameless self promo 😎) because in my fic i set the fire station at the top of the town and in this map it’s in the middle. plus a couple other things just for me. anyway, i’ll definitely specify where everyone lives in the canon of my own fic.
