I was born a pandeiro

born to dance and lead the samba of the next generation

shaking my aros at the sound of the forró echoing the tune playing in my blood

bringing the sound of my country out of my bones into the world

but my feet can't keep up with the carnaval beats

and my mind can't tell the diference between porque, por que, porquê, and por quê

I was born a pandeiro

com um fuste, aro e pele completamente brasileiro

pronta para levar a minha musica pelo mundo

but insted Im becoming a banjo

forró becomes country

samba becomes pop

My rice is papado

my brigadeiro is bitter

my knowledge of spices is flawed

and my barbecue has only hot dogs

Yet I still kiss the cheeks of the people I meet

and give the first slice of cake on my birthday

I still eat comida every day

and long for pasteis at the beach

At what point did I become too American to be Brazilian

but too Brazilian to be American?

Was it when I started using Fahrenheit over Celcius

or "America" over "United States"?

Was it when I wore too small bikinis at the beach

or when I drank in public at 16?

I miss when English was just a language that I spoke online

when America was just a dream

when I knew where I belonged

when I knew who I was

But I don't regret the choices I made,

what I left behind,

or what I got in return

I just regret getting trapped

in this idea that

if you are different

you do not belong

I cannot even put to words how scary the situation is getting, not only in Portugal, but in Europe in general.

The world is being consumed by the far-right, and if we don't stop this the next change we get, i am afraid things will go bad for this generation and generations to come, not only on a social level, but on an economic and environmental as well.

And it is honestly so fucking sad to see this happen to my country on the 50th birthday of the democracy, on the year we were supposed to celebrate the fall of the fascist regime of Salazar on the 25th of April of 1974, and instead we get 50 fascist deputies on Chega's behalf, one for each year we lived free since then, as the biggest fuck you on portuguese history...

...And to think of all the left wing people who put their lives at risk then, some of which are my teachers and my family, alive to this day, who are witnessing this downwards spiral back into what they tried so hard to get out of, it is so. Fucking. Sad.

I like to pretend like i don't care about politics on a day to day basis, but i can't deny that this made me fucking lose a lot of hope. I just want to know what the people like Mario Soares and others, who have sadly already died, who gave freedom to this country, would think about it's current state.

I faced it for the first time when my friend and I were coming back to our host family's home after spending the day in downtown Toronto during our exchange program. We met with another brazilian guy on the bus who had just come back from a trip to Niagara Falls (we were going there the next day and wanted some tips) and we started talking in portuguese, after some time he got off and it was just me, my friend and a group of kids that looked abt 15-17yo looked us right in the face while we were getting off and called us monkeys and border jumpers while making sounds and gestures as the bus drove away... anyway, I loved Canada either way, but thank God I was too shy and anxious when I was younger bcz today I doubt I'd have stayed quiet :)
