Pages.

Each night a dim light went on in the upper bedroom of the house on Argyle Drive. Inside, Vanessa sat criss-crossed on her bed, staring at a blank journal page. She held a pen in her right hand, which rested on a callus that had resulted from years of writing. Perhaps if it was another time, she would be gossiping about boys at Hannah’s house. But it was not another time, and such notions were wisps of fantasy at a time like this. Fantasy was what went into the journal, along with faded memories, teardrops, and late night ramblings. The journal kept everything safe, but also served as a bitter reminder of regret.

Some pages were neat. The words ran left to right in clean, horizontal lines. These pages were usually written in the earlier hours and were nostalgic of better times. A bag of candy corn. Yellow sidewalk chalk. Glossier stickers. These pages were sentimental and sweet, despite the chaos of the world.

Other pages were messy. Hastily scrawled words threatened to run off the pages. Inked words were blurred, paper crinkled, pages smelling of coffee and ice cream. These pages appeared randomly throughout the journal, hiding behind polaroids and poems.

Then there were the muddled pages. These pages consisted of scribbles written in the hours before sunrise. They were nicknamed “thought-drunk” because the content ranged from questions like “do you chew ice cream” to Hamilton lyrics. The material within these pages alone rivaled the thoughts of late-night and drunk Twitter combined.

Each night she opened the journal and tried to organize her brain onto its pages. Sometimes it worked. Other times it didn’t. But no matter the result, that time was hers, and hers alone. After 4 hours she returned the journal to its hiding place, turned out the light, and retired under the covers. Sometimes she was too tired to dream. That was okay. Sometimes that was the point.
