Yesterday tumblr told me this crack ship I’ve been obsessed with since Gaming re-ignited my Genshin hyper-fixation is called lionfish

It made me so happy I got motivation to draw.

I also saw someone else using a pose reference they saw on Pinterest and I wanted to try it too, didn’t really stick that much to the reference tho lol

So like... this is a long one. Hope you like it!

No fish have been biting today. What a tragedy. You had hoped you'd get at least a nibble on your bait, but... you had no such luck.

Then, you felt a tug on the line.

You excitedly began to reel in your catch, feeling a strong amount of resistance. You continued using all your strength to reel in the fish, despite the resistance, and then-!

It was pulled out of water, and it landed on the soft sand of the beach. Except, it wasn't a fish, not entirely. The top half of it's body seemed to be human, though the skin was shades of cyan, there were fins on it's back and arms... you'd reeled in a merman!

"Oh! Um! I-I'm sorry about that!" You said, walking towards him. You placed a hand on his face to try and remove the hook from his cheek, but he dove back into the sea before you could, taking your fishing rod with you.

"Aw... that was my favourite rod, too..." You sighed.

It's a peaceful morning, under the sea. An eel and an octopus sit alone, having a conversation. All is peaceful... until another eel enters the scene.

"Jade! Azul! I almost died!"

"That's nice, Floyd." Azul continues looking over over his latest contract.

"No, really! I was almost eaten! Sick, right?!"

"What was it? A shark? Whale? Lionfish?" Jade tilts his head.

"It was one o' those huuuuuuumans!"

After that is said, Jade and Azul freeze.

"Floyd, did you just say it was a human?" Jade asks his brother.

"Yeah. Look, I even have their hook in my mouth still!"

"Ugh. Come here, I'll get it out." Azul offers.

"Ooooooookkkk... just be gentle! I might just decide to chomp down on one of those tasty looking tentacles of yours if not!"

"You do realize I'm venomous, right?" Azul asks. "I could just as easily bite and paralyze you."

"Whatever. It did really hurt though... ohhhhhhhh, if only I had a sibling who could mind control humans with his singing... alas, no such sibling exists..."

"I was already planning on doing so." Jade smiles. "Azul, Floyd, we'll be having human for dinner."

"Yaaaay!!"

"Must the two of you solve everything with violence...?"

You walked along the shoreline as the moon reflected on the water.

You're not sure why you were doing it. Maybe you wanted to apologize to that merman you caught earlier, or maybe you wanted to get your fishing rod back, or maybe...

...someone is singing.

Someone is singing a song... a beautiful song you've never heard before... you were almost entranced by it.

Whoever was singing had a powerful voice. It was as if he were purposefully singing loud enough for you to hear, but quiet enough for nobody else to.

You needed to find this person.

You continued walking along the shore for what felt like forever, until eventually... you saw someone- or something- sitting on a rock. His top half looked human, but his skin was shades of cyan... he had fins on his back, arms, and where his ears should be...

Wait a second... that's the merman you accidentally reeled in earlier!

"Hey! You!" You yelled to him. He turned around, looking surprised to see you. "I-I'm sorry for what happened this morning! I didn't mean to scare you, I was just trying to get the hook out of your mouth."

"Hm? What are you talking about?" He asked. "Ah... you must be thinking of my twin brother. I suppose that would be confusing for you."

"Um... were you the one singing?" You asked.

"Why yes, I was."

"It sounded really nice!" You told him. "What's your name?"

"My, my... carefree, aren't you?" He asked, amused. "I suppose I may indulge you. My name is Jade Leech, and you are...?"

"(Y/N)!"

"What a lovely name." Jade said, smiling. "(Y/N)... could you come closer? I'd like to see your face."

You did as he asked. You stepped into the water, towards the rock Jade was sat upon. He grabbed your face with his wet hands, observing every little detail of your face. In turn, that allowed you to better see his face as well. His eyes were an olive colour on the right, and a vibrant yellow on the left. His hair was turquoise, with a long strip of darker hair on the same side as his yellow eye. He had markings beneath his eyes, and on his shoulders... he was beautiful.

"You look quite lovely, (Y/N)." Jade told you. "...for someone with legs, that is." He looked away from you.

"Thanks, Jade...!" You said. "It's getting really late, though... I should get going. Could we meet again tomorrow night? I'd like to get to know you!"

"Oh my-! Um, yes, of course, (Y/N)."

"Thanks! See you tomorrow!"

As Jade watched you run off, he couldn't stop thinking about the conversation he had with you.

"Why... why didn't I drown them...?" He asked himself.

When Jade returned, Floyd was quite disappointed he didn't get to eat a human.

Over the next nights, you and Jade would continue meeting each other. He would bring you many gifts; seashells, sunken treasures, and even the fishing rod you lost!

Jade seemed to like you. He really seemed to like you. You, on the other hand... you just saw him as a weird friend. So, one night, you told Jade that you were dating someone. And, the next night...

"Ah, (Y/N), apologies for being late! You must understand, I was taking care of some very important business."

Jade's face was covered in blood... and you could see bits of flesh stuck in his teeth.

"Wha... w-what did you do...?" You asked, terrified.

"Oh, how rude of me, to not clean myself before our meeting." He said, creepily smiling, showing off all of his bloodstained teeth. "Well, you see, you told me you were seeing someone other than me, and... mhm, I simply couldn't have that!"

"Y-you're a monster!" You yelled.

"Indeed I am, (Y/N)~"

You stumbled backwards in fear, and then... you ran. Jade wasn't too worried about that, though.

He began singing once more...

And in that very instant, everything stopped.

The only thing you could hear was his song... and the only thing you wanted to do was to return to him.

And that was exactly what you did. You walked back to him, you walked into the sea, into Jade's arms. He trapped you in a tight hug.

"Humans are such simple creatures." He told you as he stroked the back of your head. "All I need is to sing to your kind and they throw themselves into the water. It's impressive how easy it is to manipulate their minds, wouldn't you agree?"

"GET AWAY FROM ME!" You tried pushing him away, but he kept a tight grip on you.

"(Y/N). Why are you trying to leave?" Jade asked. He dug his claws into your back, causing you to wince in pain. "It's a kill or be killed world, where I come from. I could never knowingly take you into my world... so we must make a compromise."

With a tight grip on you, he swam away from the shore. You were held under the water while he swam, the freezing cold water.

Before you knew it, you were above the surface again. You were in a cave on an island far away from your home. You were shivering, and coughing up the water that you swallowed.

"Now, (Y/N), please stay here. For your safety." Jade said. "I'll return here tomorrow morning. I'm planning on introducing you to my family."

"N-no-! Please, d-don't leave m-me here...!" You cried.

"Ah..." He reached his hand out of the water, placing it on your cheek. "You're quite cute when you're scared, (Y/N)."

"I d-don't want to b-be alone here..." You begged, shaking both from fear and the cold. Yes, you were scared of Jade... he was a monster that killed and presumbly ate your partner... but you knew him. He was the only thing you knew here.

"...fine." Jade smirked. "I suppose I could stay with you the night." He crawled out of the water, and wrapped his arms around you once again. "I'll keep you warm. And I'll keep you safe, (Y/N). I love you so much... isn't it wonderful, this life we'll live together?"

Even if you wanted to escape, you can't. Your home is too far away, you can't swim that far...

You can't survive in his world. So, soon enough, you will rely on Jade entirely.

"Would you like me to sing you to sleep, (Y/N)?"

He will keep you safe no matter what. You're his perfect little human, the love of his life...

You're his, now and forever.

"Good night, (Y/N)."

As you srifted off to sleep, the only thing you heard was his song.

Fuji’s gaze drifts away again as she wipes at her face with her sleeve. She looks equally anguished and horrified. “Please forgive me. Grief has done things to my mind. I’m not reasonable. I feel like the minokasago the sailors caught earlier.”

Mariko has never thought of Fuji as prickly in the slightest, although grief and rage have certainly brought out a venom in her.

“I think every grieving woman grows spines,” Mariko tells her. “We must. There’s no other way through it. You grow a new skin that’s shiny and sharp and tough all over even while you’re still raw inside.”

alright @chaos-caverns i have done my research to make sure it would make sense. because i had a very troubling thought.

you know that hc that in triton culture you let your hair grow out and when you do something bad like a crime for example you get it cut to signal to others "this person did something bad recently" and then that implies that gillion has had his hair cut short bc of the incident that got him banished, right?

so what if that was true and there was actually a reason for this? what if triton don't cut their hair except for punishment because it hurts them to cut their hair? what if triton hair wasn't actually hair?

you know how a bunch of different fish have a lot of very thin, very long fins, like the lionfish? yeah that.

i propose that triton hair isn't hair but a bunch of special, very thin, very long fins evolved for attracting mates maybe, or signaling stuff like "danger" or "food" to other triton or even to lure prey. i've had the thought that triton's fins are bioluminescent for a long while, their skin there would be thin enough for bioluminescent substances (e.g. in the blood) to shine through (the glow would probably not be bright enough to see in the daylight, but at night or underwater it would be visible) which would mean that triton hair would be bioluminescent, which is such a cool thought but also off-topic.

fin injuries allegedly don't hurt the fish as much as an injury to the main body and the fins do grow back, but injury carries the risk of fin rot. it is to be expected that the banishment wasn't the first time gillion had his hair cut and he might have multiple fins completely destroyed, unable to grow them back, considering the elder's negligence and the fact that fin rot really needs to be treated with antibiotics and shit.

this also implies that edyn cutting her hair short is so much more intense and significant to her story, or maybe even that she didn't make the decision to cut it herself.

other facts include:

cosmo is, as the bio implies, part siren - his father’s mother is full-blooded, his father is half-siren, and he himself is quarter-siren. the rumor that his family extends back to the age of gods is also true, and part of the reason they’ve lived so long is thanks to the wisdom his human ancestors would have gained from surviving siren encounters, à la odysseus.

cosmo’s favorite type of music to sing is opera, and his voice part is countertenor, but being part siren, his natural vocal range extends into both infrasound and ultrasound. he has not tried to break glass with the high end of it, but certain friends of his have not given up trying to convince him to give it a go.

he plays the piano, the violin, and the lyre, dances ballet en pointe, and has dabbled in gymnastics and figure skating over the years - he gets very uncomfortable and jittery when he feels he’s wasting time and prefers to be moving, so in the event he has free time, he’s likely to be working out and/or practicing. he lives and dies by his schedules.

his parents are from sicily, but they moved to america and eventually had him there. his first language is italian.

cosmo is able to take a mer form in the water - it bears strong resemblance to a lionfish, and is just as venomous.

he may strike people as somewhat naïve and gullible, but while he prefers to give people the benefit of the doubt, he’s much more observant than he initially lets on. he’s able to innately tell when he’s being watched, as well as perceive the emotions others around him are feeling. he does tend to put others above himself, but he’s by no means unconfident or a pushover. he loves freely and genuinely regardless.

the necklace he wears is a mystic code made by his father to ward off the evil eye and redirect harmful effects transmitted by gaze. he has several extras made of various materials, including a few he can wear in the water, and he occasionally makes them himself to gift to close friends.

he might be a liiiiittle bit of a slut. just a little. he’s a very genuinely affectionate guy, though.

Ilia is there because Amber is conscious and active. Qrow didn’t see Cinder’s face in canon, and it’s ambiguous if he saw Emerald or Mercury’s (the fact that they stayed in the open during the Tournament implies no). Amber saw all three and was not rendered comatose, therefore Cinder, Mercury, and Emerald could not be part of the infiltration team. Adam supplied replacements from the White Fang.

It tends to activate automatically in response to a threat directed at him but will only strengthen him so that he's at an equal level with the threat, he has to make the conscious decision if he wants his magic to make him stronger or for it to activate in response to a threat directed not at him but at people he's close to (usually his family).

P.S. regarding how long he's been married to Azul's mother, Azul's birthday personal story seems to imply that his stepfather has been around ever since Azul was a child, so by default (unless otherwise plotted) I will say that Jasper and Mrs. Ashengrotto have been married for about ten years (making Dorian and Azul aged 8 and 7 respectively when they became stepbrothers).

First thoughts on the Water Ancient: Hell Yes Sea Serpents. The lionfish frills look a little odd(the ones on the head could probably be a tad bigger, closer to the teaser image) and I'd have preferred something a bit bulkier like a mosasaur-based design, but I do love them. Baby pose and F pose are top-tier. Can't believe they didn't get Angler. Also why is Featherbeard like that it's so tiny

I'm honestly not a huge fan of the official lore for them, though. It's definitely not bad; the idea of them ditching the Tidelord and moving in with Maren in the Outer Seas is very interesting. I just didn't expect the summary of the lore for the Water ancient to be that they... live in cities and are pissed that Guardians exist. I was hoping for some kind of deep-sea horror abomination from the Leviathan Trench like the teaser implied, not a found-family city slicker that left the entire continent because Tidelord made some other dragons :P

The lionfish prowls the depths, brilliant and beautiful among the reefs. Its poisonous spines and bright colors warn others to stay away, but even those that flee don’t always manage to escape this hunter’s attentions. The lionfish is an invasive species, a creature with no natural predators. The appearance of one can spell disaster for an ecosystem, wearing away at its foundation until only ruin remains. Appropriately, they symbolize hidden peril. Likewise, the Tower denotes the terrible power of chaos lying in wait. We are reminded that, no matter where we are in life, we are never safe from the sudden and unavoidable difficulties that life can throw our way.

When upright, the Tower warns the user that something unexpected and notably unpleasant is going to happen in their life. The timing of this event can be less than ideal. Your foundation is shaky and crumbling, but even among destruction lies the prospect for good. When fire tears through a forest, seeds are sown for the next generation. Surrender to forces at work in your life and start thinking about where you can go once the ground stops shaking. There is a revelation at hand. Hold onto those still in your life for support if you need it, but ultimately, you’re the key to walking away from it with your head held high.

When reversed, the Tower is warning the user that an unexpected change will come from within. A personal transformation is nigh, and to reach it, you may have to undergo a drastic shift of faith and perception. This may manifest in a crisis of confidence, a complete questioning of the truths you once held in high esteem.  For some, this can become a full on existential crisis, but at the end of the tunnel lies a newly enlightened you. Though this realization can be unpleasant, take comfort in knowing that you’ve avoided (or narrowly avoided) a disaster coming your way. Take this silver lining and your new enlightenment and carefully build your future. This position can also imply that the user is delaying a necessary change, rejected it out of fear or concern when it would be better to let the chaos come. Fish Fin Ray Structure

Got a great question from @jellojolteon on today’s “Fish Explained”. And please feel free to send these questions to my ask - there are no dumb questions here!

So JelloJolteon asks: If the fin rays aren’t bone are they...cartilage? 

I thought I knew this one, but because I haven’t been in a bio class since 2015, and my job doesn’t focus on fish physiology, I went and did some research so I could answer this. And I’m glad I did, because the answer was a bit elusive. >__> 

So, anyway, what are bony fish fin rays made of? First, let’s talk about what they ARE. Fin rays are modified fish scales and they come in two forms - spines and soft rays. Spines are very sharp and hard, like needles (I have been pricked by fish spines too many times haha). Lots of fish have them to protect themselves from predators, and sometimes, like in the lionfish, they are hollow to store venom. Soft rays, on the other hand, are unlike spines in that they are very flexible, segmented, and can be branched to support the membrane between them (and therefore aid the fish in swimming). Fish scales, and therefore the fin rays, are derived from what’s called “dermal bone” which, despite how it’s implied, is not the same as the bone making up the inner skeleton (the bones inside the coelacanth’s fin and the fin rays of say, the goldfish, just aren’t the same thing). Think turtle shells. Dermal bone does not form from cartilage and then calcify like our inner skeleton, according to my sources. Instead, it originates in the dermis (skin) and grows by accretion, or layering over time as the animal grows. For fish spines/rays, the main component appears to be calcium phosphate (this dermal bone structure is called the lepidotrichia) with additional protective layers of collagen and/or keratin.

i apologize since ik it was unprompted haha i just love helping w chara design! ;v ; I do think the club would be badass tho. you could even add things to the club too like a figurative baseball bat with nails/barbed wire... spined club, toothy club, clawed club, ect ect. all depends on how body horror-ish you wanna go, or if youd rather go more biologically likely/possible! Even a tail that looked like a club, but also did something else like splitting open into a maw or was made of all these individual strands that could fan open/dislodge if touched my first thought was a possibility of a "skirt of fins" so to speak? Fins - spiney ones, filled with poison - around the hip area or even over the back/shoulders like a cape/skirt would be fuckin badass and also attractive in the right scenarios too (i just think capes are sexy tbh). She's already kinda lion-fish like tho so it may be too much! idk if she has it already but adding scale-like armor in certain areas (doesnt need to even look like scales, can just be a texture that occurs on her body) can imply she's a warrior and make her more dangerous too :0c BUT I think you could do a ton with just her tail as well. combining things might be fun too, like a stegosaurus mixed with puffer fish spines or rattlesnake rattles or something. idk im just tossing shit out there at this point haha

to some degree I have to (want to) keep her tail looking like something she can use to propel herself through the water since her big thing is swimming but that doesn’t mean I can’t do some freaky shit with it aside from that. Girl controls every aspect of her appearance anyway, if she wanted to have a mouth tail she legitimately could canonically do that.

Who doesn’t think capes are sexy? a well done cape is 👌, and her hipfins desperately need a retouch anyway so you bet you’re gonna be seeing something like that soonish. (You can’t tell me there’s such a thing as too much with lionfish, they are the most extra fish I’ve ever seen in my ENTIRE LIFE.)
