I wish I had found Mission to Zyxx sooner. Like, at least "Jonesing for an Improvised Star Trek replacement" sooner.
I found IST when I was looking for Star Trek podcasts way back in 2011, close enough to when the troupe started doing podcasts that I was able to catch up in under a month just listening in rotation with my other podcasts during my summer commute, and I listened until they closed out the show too many years ago now (read: I don't remember how many. I think less than five, but the feed was cold by the time Lower Decks came along to do the slightly less absurd version). They were the first time I experienced improv shows deeper than the warmup games that the likes of Whose Line popularized. It was amazing to me that whole space opera workcom episodes could be Improvised like that.
And then I never looked for more long form improv comedy until I searched for sci-fi podcasts to throw in the hopper a few weeks ago.
Mission to Zyxx is a (now over) show about a crew of three on assignment to perform diplomatic missions strengthening the ties between worlds in a remote region of space and the Federated Alliance, a corrupt bureaucratic government that's totally benevolent improvement over the evil Galactic Monarchy it just replaced, and nothing goes according to plan. There's five seasons of around 20 half hour-ish episodes plus bonus and live shows. I'm not even halfway through the first season and I'm really enjoying it.

Speaking of Star Trek, I finally started listening to 'Improvised Star Trek' (mostly because I've listened to every episode of 'Hello From The Magic Tavern' twice now and it's got a couple of the same players). If you're even familiar with Star Trek I would suggest it.

Anyway, I maintain what I said about Lower Decks when I first saw an ad for it. Very good, funny concept, but it's a total rip-off of Improvised Star Trek.

And on a similar note, I used to be obsessed with Improvised Star Trek ( and totally cried when it ended) -but recently I was caught up on everything and finally decided to start Hello From The Magic Tavern. I didn’t Know Matt Young was in it, and it’s somehow super comforting.

Improvised Star Trek
Lorem: Captain Baxter, can I say something and have it not be harassment?
Captain Baxter: Seems unlikely, but take a shot.

ive been listening to a lot of improv star trek lately. i don’t necessarily recommend it unless you’re good at ignoring dumb shit cishets say for like 150 episodes before they get with it.
but the characters are really fun.

Guys
Improvised Star Trek is one of the best podcasts I've ever heard and it's fanbase needs to be waaaaay bigger. It doesn't even matter if you've never seen Star Trek before. Please go listen and support the funniest people I've ever heard!

I’ve been binge listening to the Improvised Star Trek podcast and it is super great. I love all the characters, but I’m absolutely charmed by the resident Chief Science Officer Crick Watson. Who is definitely not a robot but is a little bit of a mad scientist. Also I have no idea which uniform he should be wearing besides that it had to be blue? I’m sorry to more hardcore Star Trek fans -_-

I get the feeling that I would like Improvised Star Trek a LOT more if I hadn't been spoiled by so many really amazing podcasts lately. Its made me laugh quite a few times at work today but I'm still...eh. I think I'll move on. They're also doing a more formal, straight faced kind of improv than the Actual Play shows, and I actually really, really miss hearing people laugh! Its a big part of the Comedy Experience for me.

"Did you send that message yet?"
"Yeah. They're sending a ship to pick us up. "
"No no no, send a different message! Tell them that we've got a- a- that we didn't get their message and- and that we're not going to go back to dry dock yet."
"But there is- they were sending a tug ship, to take us back to dry dock. "
"Tell them that, uh, we don't believe in tug ships. That, uh, we think they're fictional."
"We've uncovered a conspiracy."
"Yeah, a conspiracy against tug ships-"
"Yeah."
"-and that all tug ships should be decommissioned instead of the Sisyphus. Right, so you send that message. I'm gonna put on a space suit and I'll use jet propulsion to find that half of the ship and pull it back. Since there's no weight in space, I should just be able to do it by hand."
"Sounds good to me."
"... Jet propulsion doesn't work in space. There's nothing for the jet to push against."
"Oh, like, thrusters. I- I- I don't know what you call it. "
"Space suits have some stuff on them."
"Yeah yeah yeah!"
Captaining at its finest.

sometimes a family is a dysfunctional mess of a starfleet crew who all clearly love each other very much
(an illustration done last year for the finale of improv star trek. while the podcast has ended its run, i highly recommend diving through the archive if you need a dash of joy in your day.)
