Why Do I Like (Manga) Lupin? (yes this is finished)

The not-so-long awaited question shall be answered today!!! I'm sure so many people are so excited for me to talk about Lupin for the 90 billionth time.

This will be a normal and short post, trust me.

But seriously, has anyone actually stopped and wondered: Why do I like this character so much? Why did my brain choose this character and not another? Have you ever stopped and thought about the psychology that goes into why your heart pours so much of itself into just some fictional character, that might just make you become a more well-adjusted individual in society if you just hadn't been aware of them?

I love everything about Lupin III, if you haven't known already. But I also like psychology, and talking about myself. So let me guide you through the crevices of my brain and show you why I love him so much. After this you will surely gain an appreciation for him at least, if not invite him to live inside your brain rent free.

Chapter 1: Name

sorry guys but WE GOTTA TALK IN LENGTH ABOUT HIS NAME

I think it's a really cool name!! Before I got into the series, the name Lupin III has always caught my eye. It describes straightforwardly a lot of his character premise: He's the grandchild of the well renowned thief Arsene Lupin. Wouldn't that kind of character already sound interesting to you?

I think there are very few works of fiction where the title/name of the character already tells you everything you need to know about the series. And to that i find it pretty impressive.

Aside from that, I think Lupin is a cute and fun name to say. It's very funny to have an absolute psychopath be named Loop-on. That's a grown ass man dude.

Him being the third generation is also quite interesting. You typically see people when making a fan-child of a character usually have it be a direct offspring, but no, MP skipped a whole generation to write about Arsene Lupin's grandchild.

That, of course, makes sense because he needed to have it match the time period he is writing it in, but being the third gen brings a deeper sense of inferiority to Lupin that being the second wouldn't have. We get the impression that he isn't as good as the past two Lupins and also that he is probably the most disconnected to the identity of the gentleman thief, reflected in how he dresses and acts. He's a lot more modern and young, I think this disconnect helps him be his own character.

Lastly, I find the lack of first name very intriguing. It probably doesnt have any significance but i like to think that his parents didnt give a fuck enough to give him his own first name. It's okay because he doesn't need one. His name is already that good.

Chapter 2: Design

Lupin III is designed with the manga medium in mind. Since manga is primarily in black and white, Monkey Punch needed the character to have good contrast and be easily drawn in any sort of poses and angles. I'd say he did a great job in the end, and Lupin's design is one of the best I've ever seen.

His sleek black body compliments extremely well with his jacket and tie, which with its bright colors, makes his body stand out. Having shirt and pants be black also lessens the need to add detail onto the clothes. In a way he functions like a stickman.

His head is also interestingly featureless, which makes it quite distinct from many other characters with their unique hair styles. I think it works well with his motif of being able to disguise as anybody. The sideburns also give him extra unique points and his hairline gives him a fun facial shape. I remember seeing a screenshot where Monkey Punch stated that he initially wanted Lupin to have hair similar to Goemon's, but decided against it because it would take too much time. I think this was a good choice on his part, and that sort of hair style I assumed was then reused for Lupin's child design.

Another thing I find cool about his design is just the overall roundness of it. Have you guys ever wondered why Lupin, this bastard trickster of man, has such smooth and round shapes ? Wouldn't it make more sense personality wise for him to have more sharper shapes to encompass his wild nature?

Personally, I think the round shapes are to show Lupin's softer side. While he is cunning and evil, he also exhibits a child-like and playful personality and overall his movements are quite bouncy, kind of like a bouncing ball!

In contrast though, I feel like that appearance is also to disguise his sinister side, to make him look softer than he truly is. Although his shapes are round, they are composed of rugged lines, topped with angular posing, and a sharp smile. It gives you the impression that he doesn't really fit into the soft and friendly mold.

Wow, I'm this far into the design chapter and I haven't even talked about how he looks like a monkey yet! I think for that I'm better than about half of the Lupin fans already /hj

I believe his monkey-like appearance was unintentional, but what I find pretty funny about it is that it really does fit Lupin in a way. Monkeys, often depicted as goofy and friendly animals in media, are actually quite dangerous and unpredictable animals if not handled properly. Lupin is also a smart but dangerous character, but gets softened up throughout the series to attract a more diverse audience. (Not saying that Lupin isn't goofy and silly, he is, but I feel like it's a vast oversimplification of his character.)

Monkey analysis is over, let's move on.

Lastly... Lupin III is SO FUN TO DRAW!!! Adding all that I've talked about; his monkey-like head, the nice contrast on his outfit, and the general simplicity of his design, his design is simple to draw and very malleable. I get a lot of mileage out of designing outfits for him and drawing him in various styles, so there's a lot of room to add your own artistic charm to him! I also love how there's really no correct way to color him either. Monkey Punch experimented wildly on his color palette in the past; he has a variety of outfit palette and skin color and that sort of looseness is very awesome...

His variety of expressions is also one of the best things about this design because. there's just so much you can work with and it makes him like literally the best character ever you don't understand. You can not look at this set of panels and not love this goofball.

and uh oh yeah he's really hot and I want him.

Chapter 3: Personality

I've tried avoiding talking about his personality in the last chapter, but now it's time to go ALL OOOOOOUUUTT

I've always loved the trickster character archetype ever since I was conscious. There's something very entertaining about a character that throws away any sort of moral responsibility and decides to troll the entire world. They always have extremely charming and lovable personalities as well, and Lupin is no exception!

Let's start at the surface level. I love how much of a BASTARD he is. I love how much he gets on everyone's nerves (including mine's) just by merely existing and he is proud of it. Those types of characters are so fun to follow because they make everything they do and anything around them a laughingstock, Lupin often has a shit-eating grin whenever he knows he's doing something bad and it's so entertaining!! It's also equally satisfying when he gets punished for being a bastard and I love seeing him suffer.

On top of being a bastard, he's also an ASSHOLE. Manga Lupin is a massive asshole and he exists to shit on the world whenever it does anything against him. He gets angry very often in the manga and it gets fucking crazy whenever someone ticks him off. He will literally do anything to get back to whoever pissed him off and it is super funny. He's an angry, dramatic, pouty shithead. Love him for that.

Speaking of dramatic, his strongest points as a character is just how expressive he can be. It's endearing just how much emotion is stored in that man's body and I'm drawn to those kinds of characters because despite my personality being sorta big here, I have a lot of trouble expressing myself in real life. So seeing characters like that just being able to express freely feels very empowering to me even if Lupin looks like a little bitch when he does it sometimes.

I'm also very endeared by his mannerisms. He moves very... strangely (like most MP characters do) but I think he exudes this weirdness much more due to his eccentricity and expressive personality. It makes me think that he's neurodivergent but we will talk about this later. His expressions are also really exaggerated and funny, he's like genetically engineered to act as entertaining as possible and I really enjoy observing the way he does things like watching a bug in a cup.

Okay okay I'm done with talking surface level shit. Let's talk about all of Lupin.

I don't only just enjoy trickster characters, I also like characters that have multiple layers to them (like onions) and Manga Lupin is probably the best example of this.

"I wanted to make Lupin a top-notch villain, but I also wanted to make Lupin an extremely human man. The result was the meticulous and perfectionist assassin, with a gruff, awkward, and clumsy personality."

The best part about Lupin is how multi-faceted he is. He is both a genius and an idiot, cruel but kind, emotional and logical. He is the type of man you can imagine existing in real life because his actions and feelings are extremely realistic and sometimes even relatable!!

Every one of us don't just have a single personality, there are suitable moments to be serious, suitable moments to be silly, we are never always one extreme over the other. Like Lupin, some of us are smart but are bumbling idiots on certain things, and we all have the capacity to be both the kindest people alive or commit atrocities on others. That level of complexity and humanity in Lupin makes me feel very connected to him on a level I've never experienced from any other fictional character, because he feels like a character that any of us can become if we take the wrong steps in life.

Some people say that manga Lupin is a very inconsistent character and frankly I disagree with that and I don't like how non-manga readers spread that around to diminish his character. I feel like many people fail to acknowledge the nuance he has; he is inconsistent because that is how humans are, there are no rules to how we can behave and our minds are an enigma, especially for those dealing with mental conditions and/or trauma.

Oh yeah! I haven't ever discussed how Lupin is like, severely mentally ill yet huh?

So these two pages are from the New Adventures chapter "Island of Thieves (Part 2)" the first ever Lupin manga chapter I read.

In this chapter, Lupin has what I would likely describe as a mental breakdown, followed by a series of irrational and fucked up decisions. For all that it's worth, I think this chapter won me over because I Love having a mentally ill character to study because it's such an interesting topic for me to dissect. this isn't gonna be some super deep dive into what mental illness he has because I am personally not that kind of person, but just general observations on his behavior.

The first thing I can pinpoint is his inability to control his emotions, which leads to him making rash and violent decisions towards others. There really isn't a set of things i can pinpoint that lead to his emotional outbursts because there are times where he is very levelheaded in tough scenarios, then experiences an outburst at some minor inconvenience, this sort of instability is an obvious sign that there is something wrong.

I believe that this sort of behavior came from how he grew up in the Lupin household. In the Confession Series, there were various times where he grew extremely frustrated with his father and grandfather's actions towards him.

This pent up frustration and anger in him was then directly fostered into a coping mechanism because of his occupation as a criminal/assassin, where he needed to be violent and cruel to others to survive. When that is the way that he can solve a problem, he will see it as the only way to eliminate a stressor because he has been taught no other way to cope with his feelings.

Have a problem with someone? Hit them, kill them, rape them.

Sorry, that got a bit heavy huh? I just find Lupin so fascinating, it's almost like looking into a real criminal's brain, someone who has been hurt throughout all their life and has decided to hurt the world back.

For why I focused so much on his emotional regulation issues, it is because I deeply related to this part of his character. ahh I'm gonna get suuper personal in this part so be prepared?? I guess??? And also have an open mind of course.

Chapter 4 (but also kind of sticking on Ch.3's topic): How Lupin Changed My Life

Content Warning for I will be lightly discussing about real case of parental abuse, suicidal ideations, murder ideations, and other sensitive topics.

I also grew up with a family that has not treated me the best. In the position of the family as the youngest child, I lacked power, and thus lacked the power to stand up for myself and express how I felt whenever I was hurt by my family.

Like Lupin, this caused me to have trouble with expressing my emotions in a healthy and proper way, and I often vented my frustrations through emotional outbursts in the past and have hurted others verbally and psychologically in the pursuit of feeling like I was in control of something. I also developed violent ideations of killing others or harming myself, thoughts that I have struggled a lot in repressing and still do today. That is why when reading the manga, I was able to connect to Lupin's struggles because although he has done arguably worse things than me, the root cause is the same between us and I felt... seen.

For a long time, these thoughts inside my head and the mistakes I have made due to it caused me to believe truly and deeply that I am a bad person and I internalized it as the truth, almost as if I have made peace with the plague inside my mind and that it will be a part of me for as long as I live. Reading Lupin III and seeing this character felt like he was a physical and visual representation of this part of myself, and I felt happy. Happy to know that I am not alone in what I experienced and also happy that I am not Lupin.

I still have the chance to be a better person, I have accepted that I was a bad person in the past, but it doesn't define who I am now and who I will become in the future.

Lupin in a way humanized my mental illness. Although it has caused considerable harm to myself and others, it is wrong to say that it is a plague because it was born out of circumstances out of my control, and what it was doing was merely its attempt to cope with the situation and save myself from more hurt. Like Lupin, it did what it had to do to survive, and for that I do not blame it for trying.

Although Lupin can be seen as a warning to others like me, there are parts of him that I found inspiring and has contributed to great changes in my life. His eccentricity and confidence as I've stated previously was something I wish I could have, and I have been trying to adapt that sort of personality into myself ever since I read the manga. I exude much more energy and joy than I had in the past, and used the overwhelming amount of emotion I have inside me to spread happiness to others instead of the opposite. (regulating bad emotions is a must, but good emotions, I'm letting that all out and spreading it to others! sparkle on remember to be yourself or something)

My love for Lupin has given me the greatest friends and community I've had in my life, and I am so happy to share my passion and love for this character with them.

And golly, don't even get me STARTED on my art improvement ever since I got into Lupin III. I credit Monkey Punch for most of my art improvements but I also have to give Lupin credit because he is literally my muse. I feel like I can literally draw anything if I add him on there and I have made considerable strides in my human anatomy skills from how much I draw him. (A renaissance painting of Lupin III will be done one day, I promise.)

Chapter 5: Other Stuff!

Ugh, these are the stuff that I wanted to mention but Couldn't include in this rant because I am a bad writer. Please give me a break I wrote 80% of this in less than a day. I don't give a FUCK enough to make this look good im literally talking about my skrunkly, it doesn't need to sound like a peer reviewed essay written by a professional AAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGHHH-

He's a bitch and an asshole, but he's KIND to his friends and children and you can really tell whenever he cares. And it's cute when he acts like a nice person for once.

Mental illness is also common in neurodivergent people and I really think he is one of them (Autism and ADHD specifically) Autism because he's socially awkward and acts like a FUCKING WEIRDO

seriously he really doesn't know how to talk to people normally.

ADHD because have you fucking seen that dude. I feel like his special interests are sex, crime and machinery because that's all he's good at doing, he'll probably never do anything he isn't interested in.

when he was building that statue for him he was shown to clearly be glad and content. which could mean nothing. but could also mean that he genuinely believes in roby. and dude. that definitely means so much when roby maybe looks back on that one small moment.

but being all alone at home, having been betrayed by someone close to him, i can imagine that would feel lost.

so i really really want to write him going to geo for support and feeling like hes the only adult that he can maybe-trust because he knows that he believed in him and he was glad to help him even if it was something as simple as making a statue that he probably paid him for anyway.

maybe at first geo doesn’t think too much of roby, he doesn’t dislike him at all but just didn’t really expect to care so deeply for him. however in a relatively short amount of time, geo realises that this literal kid is going through hell and supports him, makes him things like little trinkets outside of his commissions, makes him feel cared for, etc.

he teaches roby different art techniques. he shows him all his latest projects. he supports roby with all his art projects.

ok iwill try to be brief (1/80000). i think this is actually a rlly complicated question w plentiful angles but if ihad to condense MY personal thesis: i think practically everyone deserves redemption, and cwil is no exception. if it was up to me, he'd never see the ppl he hurt again. but the ppl tht love him will always love him. idk if he deserves that. but they do. so if he's gnna come back, v v v bar to the floor least he cn do i acknowledge how truly, truly, truly fucked a lot of wht he did to them was + needs to put an unbelievable amnt of work to deserve their grace and forgiveness no if ands or buts. let me explain ☝️ rest under cut bcs i'm the humble hating nutjob. warning fr cwil "crit" + cwil "neg" (in quotations bcs these r just his canon actions) but i do wnna be transparent that this talks abt said shitter actions n if thts too much fr you yr welcome to scroll away :] gen this isn't a slight do what ygotta! also warnings fr canon typical toxicity and suicide

cwil is capable of being. extremely monumentally cruel. and this isn't a unique trait, many of the dsmp characters are, but the consistency and selfish root and target of his actions iit's like. i feel like i'm in a mass gaslighting campaign or smthng i like never see ppl rlly look at the shit he's done and contend w what it means.

objectively, he's a antagonist in all this, there's really no arguing here. in the pogtopia-manburg war, he's a bad guy who wants to blow up the crowd w him multiple times. in revival, he's a tense force tht imposes on people. the full quote isn't "ctubbo doesn't wnna be like cschlatt." it's "ctubbo doesn't wnna be like cschlatt, and ctommy doesnt wnna be like cwilbur." they're both on the hitlist, like. what does tht say. but, of course, crucially, fr both, he's also a victim. his antagonist role doesn't mean he's not sympathetic, it doesn't mean he wasn't being set up, it doesn't mean he wasn't sick and scared and delusional, it doesn't mean that nov16 wasn't a deeply horrifying suicide attempt. it's all awful and terrible, and he didn't deserve that. and tht can coexist w the fact that the totality of his targets, the power he wields over them, how conditional the remorse he shows can be.* (i won't even get into his wack ass apology streams.) like. you surely get what i'm saying. all those actions he chose to do can be awful too. it can just be two things.

*and ithink thts wht makes ghostbur so effective,,,at least did b4 those stupid ass retcons but idgaf, if it spits in the face of its own internal consistency and lore and betrays the core of the characters, idon't have to hold onto it. so taking this as it was written: ghostbur says he wants to distance himself frm alivebur. the point of that is alivebur n ghostbur ARE the same person. even if it's blurry, even if the intricacies of limbo make things harder to explain. but tht fractured sense of self, a coping mechanism to even be able to live w yrself...he wants to seperate himself in the sense of separating his actions, not wanting to be hated, not wanting the weight of it on his shoulders...there's a Lottttt of scenes where ycn p easily parse tht ghostbur DOES remember more thn he lets on, he just doesnt wnna look at it. he cant bare to. it's tragic.

i'm bringing this up bcs up to this point, iwas v much still on the guys side even if he was. intense smtimes, to put it mildly. ycould rlly feel tht sense of remorse and pain and iwas like ok...this will all. mean smthng. but for it to do that, it needs to contend! it needs to take his mistakes seriously while understanding the pain that lead to them, it needs accountability and sympathy and an actual point, and instead it delivers on fuck all. it wants to have its cake and eat it too, telling us the audience oh! isn't he sooo sad! please extend your understanding! while still having him over and over do worse and worse actions tht "being sad" don't erase. while not wanting that understanding to extend to the people he harms.

and it doubles down on that all through the revival arc.

if i may be so bold. ithnk ppl smtimes overstate or overlean on cwil mental illness as sm barrier. it's always this nebulous third thing tht conveniently absolves him of everything,,,even the smallest, more coherent moments robbed of their agency bcs its more palatable fr him to be sm poor baby woobie rather than sm jackass who smtimes just makes the wrong fucking choice. which imo is the more interesting version of the character, as is for all characters!

and ithnk tht v revival arc then also recontextalizes his earlier actions...ythink its just the circumstances, it's largely, maybe, probably just that, maybe, and sure, he's being selfish and shitty, and awful, and he's still responsible fr a lot of it, but he's struggling, he's hurt, it's fucking SAD! i feel for the guy, it all just fucking sucks!! and that hope is still there. and then you're forced to see tht it WASN'T like sixty flukes, it wasn't just this continuous, continuous set of mistakes, it wasn't smthing he... cwilbur just fucking sucks. ok? he just fucking sucks sometimes. he'd short sighted and self serving and places his own needs above others. over and over and over.

he abandoned his son b4 and after revival. he disowned fundy, mocked him for his spy efforts, fucking. waterboarded him? even if it's more comedic on his end, this was a v serious moment fr cfundy! and tht never comes to fruition bcs cwil Doesn't Respect Him. can you imagine if any other character did this? he watches his kid kill himself infront of him, just like his own dad did to him, and then left him behind. never checked on him again despite saying thts all HE wanted fr HIMSELF. cwil got revived and he never even looked for cfund, despite cfundy counting on it, preparing fr a grand total of nothing. even cq feels so bad abt it, he lies to cfundy's face to spare his feelings abt the fact cwil has been popping into lnv to see everyone BUT cfundy. wow.

he CHOSE to scapegoat tubbo, demean him, and physically punish him fr disagreeing him on nov16! he wanted the destruction to hurt ctommy the most specifically, but whn ctommy rejected being on stage in the middle of a pre-planned ctech attack, he was more than happy to settle fr ctubbo!! LOL. (and i'll get into how he treats ctommy more just hold on a second.). cwil was more than happy to put this kid in this position knowing ctech would shoot him in the face. which is the second time he's done that. btw. three if we wnna count the pit and a different target. which i do. LOL. you're a good kid, and an even better spy. i'm going to put you in a position i instigated and i consider dangerous for my own gain. you're not a coward, tubbo, are you? give the signal so i can blow up the crowd with you inside it. 😁🔫 guys.

ctubbo has his batch of "safe targets", ppl he cn talk to and confront knowing they won't hurt him, and cwilbur just isn't one of these people. he made the kid CRY upon revival. he put him in a position where his feelings were more important thn ctubbos grief and fear, both b4 and after death, GETS HIS HUSBAND KILLED over literally nothing, then gives him the empty gesture of an empty country after, smthng ctubbo never wanted, who stays quiet and small and yessiring all the way, in a direct parallel to all the other times he's disrespected him, as well the country being a parallel to the time he set it up fr him to get shot in the face. twice. need i mention. smthng tht perma-killed cschlatt. btw. which iwill get to ☝️ as cschlatt and cwil are canonical parallels, and it provides insight to my point here. they r v v v important and crucial to eachothers arcs, and yet the way they're treated by the larger fanon is completely different and erm. well. like. ido fear it's relevant.

ppl looove to invent shit fr cschlatt, say he's this n that, crazy n volatile, take scenes where he's doing fuck all and interpreting it in the most bad faith way possible to reverse engineer a point. it's shitty n bad fr a multitude of reasons, which i've touched on quite a few times, but it bcs extra stupid bcs erm. uhm! cwil is actually the one doing all that shit. like. on screen. on screen! HE'S the one who actually had a son, who he abandoned and is awful to! theres a decent amount of music themed pokemon, amd it would make logical sense to turn the singers into birds across the board. but thats ehhh . theres yamask and cubone for mask motifs but pokedex entry wise, it just doesnt add up. SO im going with mimikyu / pikachu. we get to have the themes of wanting to be someone else, hiding true identity, AND you get to sprinkle in some transgenderism with the sexually dimorphic tails. phantom mimikyu, dressed up in the scraps and rags of past costumes, hides his tail altogether.

zweilous moncharmin / firmin. it was gonna be zweilous or dodou. i opted for the former bc im tired of gen 1 for the fact that the heads are always bickering with each other . not to mention that design wise, its more interesting to work with.

swanna carlotta. so this is where i decided to introduce a bird for singing related purposes but you see its funny bc shes a swan and swans cant sing. you may #lol now. im a carlotta truther so i know that i am being a bit surface level with her reading for the sake of this silly au. cope.

how would you flesh out mikasa’s character /gen

I'll keep my ting brief.

Now, this is just one approach that is based on my personal philosophy and interpretation of AOT. The goal is to give Mikasa a personal goal and ambitions distinctive of Eren. I am using canon facts for this so there will be points of overlap, but again, the intent is to flesh it out and give her more narrative independence from Eren. Not a rewriting but an expansion.

Point 1: her strength

this is a gripe i have with any story, not just mikasa.

due to her ackermann blood, mikasa is extremely strong and talented. however as a main character, i believe just letting her be strong does a huge disservice to her story. mikasa's should be more than something she inherited but something so earned and worked tirelessly to gain. she is not strong by nature she is strong by intent.

the way i would introduce this is with her parents. i would shift her original backstory to where she does try to fight back against the intruders and protect her mother. a slight activation of her abilities. but because she's so small and weak she isn't able to succeed and they overpower her and kill her mother. so when we get to the point with eren she is able to kill the guy because she is genuinely angry at him and has something to prove. her strength becomes an issue again with Carla. she genuinely tries to lift the house off of her and refuses to give up. she wont let her own weakness be the reason for another life lost. but she cant lift and entire house so she has to give up and run away.

from that point on, mikasa wants to be strong. she wants to be able to lift a house. she pushes herself further than anyone else because she believes it's what she needs to do. it's a toxic mentality that catches up to her later but for now it is her main source of motivation and drive. this also gives her a reason to become a scout over anything else. she doesnt want a passive role in the fight, she wants the battle and the chaos. she would not feel satisfied reinforcing the walls or protecting the king. she wants to be on the battlefield.

Point 2: her reason for going beyond the walls/identity

most of what seems to push mikasa into becoming a scout is eren and wanting to be with eren (where you go i go). that obviously limits her character and just reeks of misogyny. i think she should have her own goal or beliefs about the world outside of the walls.

this can be pulled from her ethnicity. mikasa is said to be the only remaining "oriental" in the world. she is a representation of one of the harms the walls has put onto the world, the destruction of culture and diversity. and while she doesnt believe that there is more people outside of the wall she does believe that they are not good for the growth of society.

it gives her common ground with armin as well. he takes interest in the little remnants of her culture and tries to understand why that distinction exists. he's aware of geographical differences which leads him to theorize that where she is from is far from where there are from and people had to adapt differently.

her desire to go beyond the walls is no longer for eren (alone) but for her own sense of self. she is proof that there is more to the world and she wants to be able to see it all with eren.

point 3: culture

a minor change i would make to mikasa's backstory is that rather than her mother just starting to teach her embroidery, they would be working on a project together. in other words, she already knows how to do the embroidery and she can do it very well. after her mother dies she stops but armin encourages her to continue (for the reasons explored in point 2).

based on the research i did, i believe the pattern they were alluding too was Sashiko, a japanese reinforcement technique. it's pretty but also functional and as a result she frequently would mend things using this technique. you can see it scattered all of the story, clear signs of her just going around and fixing things. clothing, bedsheets, curtains, you name it.

her main victim was the scarf she got from eren. now i dont know what material it's made of she lets assume she can. the reason why that scarf is able to last for so many years is because she was constantly fixing it. she would use red thread so you cant see the difference from afar but when you close enough or even touch it you can feel the difference. the love and care she pours into. it serves as a manifestation of her cultural identity and the resilience she has. when the asbestos people show up, it's the scarf that proves her identity, and it's the thing that allows her to reconnect with her people (instead of some random branding fabricating out of thin air).

there is a sense of build up and pay off to this seemingly random habit that she has.

point 4: her relationships

gonna speed through this bc this post is getting long

Armin: both have an interest in the world beyond the walls, armin promised to help her find where her family comes from, armin takes interest in her culture and encourages her to continue engaging with it, a fun additional moment would be the two of the visiting asbestos together w/o eren

Annie: as expressed in point 1, mikasa wants to be strong, she needs to be the strongest. she becomes almost envious of annie because is just as if not stronger than her. they end up having a rivalry of sorts where mikasa is constantly trying to upstage annie. not for eren but for own pride. when they fight, Annie wins because while Mikasa is stronger Annie has the better technique. they agree to do a best of 3, the second win going to mikasa during the battle. and she is still to this dead set on having the final fight. even after the rumbling she is still threatening to beat annie's ass.

Jean: mikasa hates jean at first. when she was kidnapped the kidnappers made lots of comments about her ethnicity and eroticized her over and over. this exposed her to the way men actually look at her and makes her resent anyone that only sees her as this exotic beauty. so when jean makes comments about how different she looks it immediately triggers her and for a good while she wants nothing to do with him. they do sort things out and he apologizes for making her feel uneasy. but for a good while there she just didn't like his ass

Historia: they don't get close. Mikasa does hate her for being so close to eren (it's ok for a girl to be a bit jealous over her man, let her be). after everything, they're the only one's left on the island and Historia makes it a point to take care of her. she honours her and defends her. they eventually start to talk and bond over the grief of losing their true loves. mikasa is also very close with her daughter and even teaches her how to fight.

Levi: one thing she learned from her mom was this unique tea/tea making thing idk. levi discovers this while they were all in the cabin and just falls in love her (platonically!). he keeps making her make him the fancy tea. they start to talk and develop a bond with one another. levi also takes interest in mikasa because he understands her drive and he understands the harm in it. he wants her to rest and find more meaning in her life (hence the tea). at this point they don't know they're related, he just sees a girl who reflects all of his toxic traits and wants nothing more than to save her from the coldness and pain he has. and yes he does join her and armin on the trip to asbestos because hello? fancy tea? of course levi is going to be there.

Sasha: they're implied to be best friends but i think they should actually be friends first. she should be mikasa's armin. sasha is one of the only people that isn't intimidated by Mikasa (or annie lol). she has no issue following her around or joking with her. mikasa ends of enjoying her company even if she would never express it, she loves having her little sasha following her around. sasha is also the other main victim of mikasa's embroidery because she is just always tearing her clothes. their relationship truly deepens when she a) learns about how sasha saved the girl and it reminds of eren saving her, b) when sasha tells her about her struggles with her family and the changes forced onto them. referring back to point 2, mikasa believes that because of the walls so much diversity was lost. she seeing sasha's culture being destroyed again because of the walls/titans, she is able to relate to her plight and doesn't talk down to her about it. she understands why sasha wanted to protect her lifestyle and never once discouraged her to change her ways.

Final point: Eren

with everything that has been added to mikasa's character, she is now able to exist outside of eren. she has friends, she has hobbies, she has goals. even if she doesn't really acknowledge them they still exist. and it's her life and bonds that eventually pull her away from Eren. after the end of s3, she is able to do things she always wanted to do but rather than being happy and enjoying their new found freedom, eren stays bitter and vengeful.

the first time she starts to question him was when he refuse to go to asbestos with her and armin. this is what they wanted this what they worked so hard for so why is he being so stubborn. it's also the first time she defies him, choosing to leave his side for her own happiness.

the second time is when sasha dies. she loved sasha just almost as much she loved eren. his nonchalance to her death genuinely made her re-evaluate the way she feels about eren. the fact that he didn't even try to comfort mikasa after the fact and just carried on with his plan just ruined him in her eyes.

the third time is when he fought armin. now i am going to suggest a major change but i think's necessary for her character. when eren starts fight armin, she does jump in and stop eren. again, she become strong to protect the people she loves, she has a deep bond with armin and he continues to care for her, she already lost one friend she's not about to lose another. it also disproves eren's statement about her being his slave. she's not drive by her blood or any of that crap he said.

when she kills him in the end, it's still the same as before but now we understand much better why she turned against eren. because eren turned against her. actually showing the degradation in their relationship and giving her moment after moment where she is able to see and understand just how much eren has changed, it makes that final moment more impactful. she still acts the same and continues to be the same devote mikasa as before but it's clear that subconsciously she no longer believes in eren. she still kills him out of love, giving him the freedom he desired for some long. but what i discussed earlier, mikasa finally feeling a sense of completion shows her that she can be happy, it is possible to be happy again after everything. she understands what it means to be free and she understands that eren's problem isnt that they arent free its that he isnt free. so she frees him

i got into pokemon again and i thought of a team for reca, and also my oc (who ive decided to name abezethibou aka zeti for short). i read so many pokedex entries for this... heres the teams and explanations.

RECA: in my head he's not that strong or serious as a trainer, so he just has pokemon he likes most, or for real life utility.

1 Rotom: yknow how rotom phones exist? yeah, so that, but assistant director. its genius.

2 Beheeyem: it can manipulate memories of others. perfect.

3 Palpitoad : amphibian :). also it can sorta sing apparently.

4 Smeargle: dog that draws lmao. literally. the dex doesnt say much else.

5 Mr. Rime: i didnt even need the dex entry for this choice, but its a dancer and comedian.

6 Lurantis: idk, just vibes, but the dex says collectors like to maintain the vibrance of their colors which is apparently very hard. in my head that registered as like: oh, exotic rich guy pet. yeah put it there.

ZETI: theyre a pretty paranoid person so they feel better as a stronger trainer. my game knowledge is limited so this team probably sucks but theyre strong cause i said so hehe

1 Absol: it appears to people just before disaster strikes. this is def not canon in the games but iirc in an anime ep or movie it was that they predict those disasters and try to warn people, and it resulted in them becoming a bad omen instead. zeti relates

2 Metagross: it doesnt really have a reason to be here but i love metagross so i had to.

3 Grimmsnarl: its apparently pretty mischevous and likes pulling pranks. zeti likes to tease others just so see their reaction sometimes so i had to give em this

4 Ceruledge: theres not much to say except the vibes matched.

5 Spiritomb: the dex entries say such different things abt this pokemon but i understood it as this. its made of 108 evil spirits who were imprisoned in the stone below it for their misdeeds. anyways, my reason for this was something-something the pull between wanting to not give a fuck but also eternal grief and regret

6 Urshifu (rapid strike): i hc this is the pokemon they got specifically to ease their anxiety. it also kinda fits though. its implied that it seeks to exterminate those with evil hearts, so in my head it aligns with zeti's one belief that is a constant in their life -never fw evil people- and also this makes it a good protector.

I put it into marriland to take a look at the weaknesses & resistances and (you can skip this part if you don't care too much for it lol)

There's have a bad weakness against fairy, but that can be easily fixed by giving metagross & ceruledge the right moves. you could probably give the others something as well if you think it's necessary

overall the team is looking really good honestly imo. if the ceruledge has the ability flash fire it would be immune to fire type moves as well (won't change the total weaknesses, just fun to know imo)

the pokemon you chose look pretty intimidating as well, really gives off the vibes of a powerful trainer :3

It was based on the Holon region in the TCG which has pokemon with funny types. we have Tera types now... the idea was that it would be begin further expanding and adding its own League and whatnot. I put it as above Johto/Kanto so relatively gen 1&2 selection of mons. keeping it simple.

it was more about the Weird Type Shit, which the pokemon prof of the region was studying under an organization she was a part of (the evil team, which was not branded as "Team (x)" just like Aether Foundation lmao). anomalies to track down and whatnot. but they were also inducing it themselves and studying other detected anomalies in the region. or sometimes the experiments they did created new, unintended anomalies of their own

this was mostly to make Missingno canon. which is like the only thing that hasn't still come to pass yet (BUT IT SHOULD!!!!!!). my dearest darlingest Missingno, the entire reason I love glitches today, was effectively my box legendary. the backstory of the prof was much like Lusamine in that she saw this Fucking Weird Pokemon a long time ago due to her Experiments and it fucked her up and she became a weird bad anime mom afterward. SHE EVEN HAD A DEAD HUSBAND!!!!!!! I FUCKIN INVENTED LUSAMINE FIRST

oh I should mention the "protag" analogue of the region WAS the professor's child. SO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! you had to fight your mom. who is the prof. who is also the evil team leader. and corrupted by some messed up videogame code. damn that sucks

later when we started getting more AI-feeling Rotom characters, I imagined a Rotom in a more robot/android body as one of the team underlings. he was the protag's buddy back home but now he has to fight you :( sorry i dont wanna do this but my programming is telling me to (throws a pokeball out halfheartedly)

the time has finally come! Sadako finally got an update in DBD and im here to talk about it.

overall, these changes are amazing. i think after this update is released, Sadako will finally move up the killer tier list (though she will always be S tier in my heart ♡ ). though i dont play killer all that much anymore, i still find myself going back and making sure i still got it.

i will be going over each point from behaviors blog post individually to ease confusion- also, they talk about reworking her add-ons as well but didnt disclose which ones they were working on.

Projecting to a TV now applies ¾ of a stack of Condemned to all Survivors not carrying a Cursed Tape (was 1 stack to nearby Survivors).

this is the only one i don't understand why they changed it. i think keeping the projecting stack at 1 is fine- as it doesn't affect survivors unless you're projecting constantly. i do like that now it affects all survivors instead of those around the tv you project to.

The time a TV is disabled after The Onryo Projects to it has been reduced to 70 seconds (was 100 seconds). This can be further reduced using Add-ons.

THANK YOU BHVR OMG. this has been a needed change for a while. even if it was reduced to 80-85 i would have been happy. waiting so long for a tv to turn back on is frustrating, especially if you know survivors are working on a gen near that specific tv.

The time a TV is disabled after a Survivor removes the Cursed Tape has been increased to 90 seconds (was 60 seconds).

THANK YOU AGAIN BHVR. it never made sense (to me) why survivors turning off tvs had them off shorter than when you projecting to them. this also provides some sense of security to survivors working on gens and reduces the amount of time they have to work on turning tvs off.

Projection now has a 15 second cooldown. Since there is no longer a range limit on the Condemned effect, we need to limit how frequently this can happen.

am i upset about this? yes, but also no. my play-style doesnt include me teleporting constantly, but having a cooldown is nice to have so you can plot where to project next.

cursed tapes

Getting hit with a Basic Attack while carrying a Cursed Tape will apply one stack of Condemned.

WHERE WAS THIS WHEN SADAKO DROPPED?? THIS MAKES SO MUCH SENSE. and now carrying a tape is so much more lethal than it was before.

When a Survivor carrying a Cursed Tape is hooked, all other Survivors gain one stack of Condemned and the Tape is destroyed.

JKFHAOFHAOHFIU AGAIN WHERE WAS THIS???? the tape being destroyed is also nice, since when survivors get unhooked they run to get rid of their tape.

Holding a Cursed Tape no longer passively builds Condemned.

hot take: this shoudnt have been in the game in the first place. most survivors keep the tape until they're at 6 stacks then get rid of it anyway (its me. im survivors.)

Cursed Tapes can now be placed in any TV other than the one they were retrieved from.

thats all. i just want to be outplayed by survivors. though i can understand why they had the original mechanic in the game originally. this also provides a sense of safety if multiple survivors are working on a gen.

Chases are prevented when Demanifested, making it more difficult to keep track of The Onryo’s position.

this is the same as other stealth killers (wraith), so i have no real issue with this change. its also nice that survivors wont know you're there due to the chase music playing

Demanifesting now removes Bloodlust, similar to other Killer Powers.

again, its the same as other killers, so i dont really care about this one.
