I have a meta question for you! What do you think the range is on an average elf for óswanë? Like think your average archer or something; someone who is used to using it often, but doesn’t obviously have the power and skill that could be found in Thranduil or Celeborn and esp not Elrond or Galadriel.

iirc in all my research about óswanë I either couldn't find a range limit, so to speak, or Tolkien basically said that distance has absolutely no effect on it. This is with the caveat though that I still have yet to get my hands on a full copy of HoME so I don't know if there's anything in there that might inform my answer better! In Osanwe-kenta Tolkien does say that all Ainu and "Children of Illuvitar" are capable of Osanwe, but ease and skill are (presumably) another matter entirely.

I have this vague idea that it is a trained skill with varying levels of aptitude. I headcannon Elrond has increased aptitude due to the ainur genetics. Ainur exist like, mostly as ideas, right? They can choose to take on fana but they're basically just spirit and idea, so it makes sense to me that communication via thought would feel the most natural to them.

Galadriel does seem to be the most skilled from what we see in the books, and we know that she learned a lot of her arts from Melian.

Tolkien also does mention (iirc) that a person cannot be communicated with if they don't want to be. So there's no forced óswanë within canon. Like, Sauron can't just break into someone's mind even if he wanted to. I tend to fudge that a lot for fun plot and whump purposes. I think it's more entertaining if óswanë boundaries can be crossed without a person necessarily consenting, but this seems to explicitly be something that Tolkien said doesn't happen within canon. Tolkien also writes that there are specific criteria that need to be met for communication to be possible. Affinity between minds is a factor, whether through closeness, love, intimacy, etc. The urgency of the matter to be discussed is a factor, and authority is also a factor (like if a person is trying to communicate to their subjects, or if someone has a duty to another person, stuff like that). If the criteria aren't met then communication can be 'fuzzy', essentially.

Anyway hopefully this is helpful! This is a very belated and long-winded answer haha. So yeah distance really isn't a factor, but skill and aptitude may be.

What is a kiss? Usually a way to express love, affection or as part of a greeting.

So let’s put this into perspective.

. Cast photographed together before boarding the bus that drove them to Murrayfield. So it’s a given that greetings were exchanged. Kisses and hugs, at the very beginning of the class excursion to TS concert with both the Headmistress and her deputy in attendance.

. Arrival and settling into the VIP tent and waiting for the pre show performance. Drinks, talking and familiarising themselves with the setup. Access, security, toilets.

. Sam and Caitriona would have been cognisant that the performance was filmed. All the other performances have been with multiple cameras and drones. TS set the standards very high with the use of technology so everyone can enjoy and benefit from her concerts.

. The chances of being filmed were high. They were very close to the stage and in the line of sight of the multiple cameras. These are two people very well versed in outdoor and location filming. Not novices. They would have seen the crew pre show.

. Paramore start their set with introductions and then their performance.

. Not sure how long they were in attendance before Paramore came on stage and not my job to find out. But suffice to say co-star catchup interactions were done and dusted.

What the video shows is a woman, Caitriona, so intuitively and intimately comfortable with Sam that she draws him in, arm around his neck and kisses him. Twice. It’s there on film. And it’s this that has the tumblrinas knickers so twisted.

We see a Caitriona who clearly not only “likes” her costar ( you know that she is said to hate him) but initiates UNNECESSARY closeness and deep affection, LOVE, for Sam whichever way you look at it. It was hours into being together on the excursion, not minutes.

18. Do you title your fics before, during, or after the writing process? How do you come up with titles?

I tend to have titles for them before I start writing them, but every once in a while, I'll have a fic idea without a title until I'm finished writing it. Typically, I pick a title that is either a word/phrase I want to highlight in my fic (i.e. End Up Here and Just to Be Held) or a feeling I want to highlight (i.e. Overflow and Serenity).

31. Do you start with the characters or the plot when writing?

I start with the characters! I feel very character driven in my writing process rather than plot driven. Often, I have a character or two that I end up really connecting with/adoring and want to write something about them. Plot often develops as I'm exploring the characters :)

41. Do you tend to reread fics or are you a one-and-done kind of person?

I love to reread fics! I sadly haven't had as much time lately for reading, so I'm trying to play catchup. But when I do have time, I love to reread fics I enjoy :)

66. How do you deal with writing pressure (i.e. pressure to update, negative comments, deadlines, etc.)?

Oh gosh... I put a lot of pressure on myself to reach my made-up deadlines, so I get frustrated when I haven't finished something by the time I said I would. I'm trying to be more forgiving of myself and just accept that life gets busy and I'm not always going to be able to write/post when I want to! As for negativity, I ignore negative comments. I'm not interested in engaging with people who are negative! I want to build a positive place and don't have the space for negativity :)

I'm not really religious or anything, but I love books/shows that have religious themes/symbolism in it

Like Frankenstein or even the silmarillion, shows like Castlevania.

But like I don't know what to look up to find books like that lmao😭

Cause like I want something more modern I suppose, not something like Milton's paradise lost or Dante's inferno (which I do want to read at some point)

But I want a like fantasy series/books that has like really interesting religious symbolism, does that make sense lmao 😭🤣

Genuinely I would suggest pretty much anything by @neil-gaiman - especially American Gods. I am reading it right now, and it's fantastic!

I tend to really love religious symbolism and themes in fiction too but I'm pretty picky about it, so I unfortunately do not have a lot of modern recommendations for you! 'religious themes and motifs' can vary so widely because everybody means something different lol. 😭 if you want something that heavily involves fantasy religion, I cannot recommend The Stormlight Archives by Brandon Sanderson enough. He strikes the perfect balance between religion being something that's kind of totally a cultural construct, and also something that might possibly be real. It's so so so good.

I also gave the that Knox album a couple spins and I understand there’s a level of cheesiness to it, but enjoyed the pop of it all. It’s catchy, has some clear pop-punk influences on it, but it’s totally saccharine fun. The Stats: Over the past week, I listened to 26 different artists, 34 different albums, and 349 different tracks (370 scrobbles). Loved the first season and it doesn’t look like they’ve missed a step. Random and Personal Stuff * The stock market chaos and uncertainty was difficult to stomach all week. This is now the second massive collapse I’ve witnessed in my lifetime. (The first being 2008.) I don’t really have words to describe any of it. We’re all being pulled along by the whims of a madman. A very good portion of my life has now been Republicans causing economic crashes and Democrats coming in and it taking years to clean it up. Then it repeats. It’s indescribably depressing. Each Saturday I sit down and do a weekly review of finances, just to make sure we’re looking good on budget for the month, categorize transactions in Copilot (still my favorite budget/finance app), and get an overview of the landscape. This morning was just brutal and depressing. I know the math. I know the high probability of a rebound over the long term. I know the reasons that by the time I retire this will hopefully be a blip. But watching the drop and seeing the loss and going to work feeling like it’s for “free,” can only be described as: soul crushing. * March was pretty fun though. Checked Out - Reading CatchUp 2025

With my new reward idea, I'm a lot more motivated to read, wow wild! I no longer have Prime Reading/Kindle Unlimited, but because I have a year subscription to Audible, I will still have that until November. I'm 6 books behind, here's the 6 I've decided to try to catch up with:

A Beginner's Guide to Numerology by Joy Woodward I had this on Kindle, and had been slowly chipping away at it since last year (I'm taking a lot of notes) but Kindle finally told me that I had reached the Publisher's Set Limit for Copies from the book... Because sometimes (often) I would copy how Joy explains something straight into an Obsidian Callout... Yea, this is one of the main things that sent me into a spiral to un-DRM my books, because if this were a physical book I would be copying by hand, but because I want the ease of Ctrl+C into a Quote Callout... Yea, anyway!!! about halfway through, as said, I'm taking absolutely a ton of notes, I have found everything very direct and this has been a very rad first step into Numerology. I'm just over halfway through, and I've been eating it up in these past few weeks, there have been a lot of notes on path and numbers and I dig it.

Talk to the Hand by Vernon Mahabal This one is from Audible, it's about 3 hours long, but I also have a digital copy (sometimes I like to read/listen along). Because this one is so short to listen to, I am going to try and go through it in my spare time so I can catch up to my reading goal quicker.

Professional Writing Skills by Natasha Terk Another one from the Audible subscription. It is about four and a half hours long. I haven't started it yet, not sure what to expect, but hoping it might make tackling my work inbox easier. I also am reading it for some of the same reasons as the one below, but from a more technical standpoint.

If You Want to Write by Brenda Ueland Through Audible, I haven't started it, but I've been on the fence about sharing my writing places (online) for a really long time in my adult life when at one point (before a fuckton of trauma) I was relatively fearless; I am hoping this book will help me get back to that because I honestly just want to write, I just want to share my stories somewhere, and maybe a reader finds em, maybe an internet-archeologist finds em ages in the future, that's not in my hands, but what is? The words.

For the Fiction Shelf, I have Valley of the Dolls by Jacqueline Susann; Audible. I'm somewhere near the 40% mark with that one, the plot has picked up and I really dig it. This was the book I chose for the Public Domain Day, I just still haven't finished it, unfortunately. I also have The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson; Purchased thru KoboBooks, not started yet, on this shelf; I am really interested in this book and have been for a while but have never actually made the time to read it.
