Before the increased influx of Melusine officials joining their ranks, the Marechaussee Phantom was largely established by humans united under the common goal of keeping Fontaine safe.

Many in Clorinde's family held ties to these special detective forces; specifically with tracking down wanted criminals. Given their longstanding cooperation, they have cemented themselves in its foundation history. Hence, it is not a stretch for someone like Clorinde to be seen as a successor to the Marechaussee Hunters of old.

From a young age, she inherited their teachings and techniques. Her skills in hunting, tracking and combat are honed through strict training regiments. What little of her down time is reserved for interacting with children her age, whose parents also happen to be working in investigation, community outreach or legal fields (eg: Navia).

Much of her training is focused on disarming and incapicitating others; On hunting. She knows exactly when, where and how to strike. She knows what it takes to outpace her opponents. She knows when to overwhelm them. She knows how to go in for the kill. She just chooses not to at every turn, as frequently as she can.

Clorinde doesn't hunt animals.

She hunts people.

You know, I don't think I've ever seen anyone discuss my favorite D&D spell. I mean, I'm sure someone has, but I've never seen it. So I'll do so now, because I think the spell is worth talking about, both in terms of D&D, and other similar systems because of the way it's designed. So, without further ado, let's talk about Psychic Lance!

It's a forth level spell, 120 foot range, and 7d6 damage against a single target. Pretty unimpressive so far. But it has two features that make it worth while. Firstly, it can target creatures that you can't see, so long as you know the targets name, and they're in range. Not super useful, but it could definately come in handy, letting you fire through walls or at invisible targets. And secondly, any target that fails the spells save becomes incapicitated for one round, losing their next turn.

So, why do I like this spell so much? Is it part of some broken combo? Not that I know of. Why I love this spell is actually quite the opposite, in fact, and I think is closer to how mid-high level damaging spells should be designed. You see, the damage is does is pretty middling. Higher than a weapon attack, lower than purely damaging spells like inflict wounds. But this spell does something special, without being gamebreaking. It can make a target lose a full turn, and has some additional utylity besides. It's not going to instantly win a fight (unlike something like banishment), but it's strong enough to give your party a clear edge if you use it right. And you get to deal some damage in addition to that. Crucially, the spell still deals some damage on a successful save. So, by giving it some damage and a strong secondary effect, the spell manages to avoid being a "save or suck" spell. So yeah. I think the design philosophy of this spell is really interesting, and more D&D spells should be like this.

And yeah, I'm pretty sure other systems have more spells like this already, but I think it's interesting to take an example from a game where most spells are exclusively damaging or exclusively debuffing.

Tolerance is Extinction does not live up to expectations

If you know me, you're aware of how I feel about X-men '97: it's a brilliant upgrade of the original run that deconstructs the politics of Charles Xavier in a nuanced and interesting way. The fifth episode remains the high point of this season though, as the three-part finale does little to surprise and in some ways even reverts the status quo.

Spoilers for Season 1 under the cut

Although the episode was competently executed with some great action scenes and dialogue, I can't help but feel like the most incendiary messages of the show are walked back slowly.

At first, I was excited to find out what Bastion's reason was for keeping Magneto around. Bastion responds to his escape with barely any annoyance, but it is not really explained what his ultimate plan was.

It was also strange to me that both the Wild Sentinel and Trask Prime proved capable of incapicitating and nearly killing multiple X-men by themselves, and neither Bastion nor other primes proved equally dangerous. By rights, E-day should have been the conclusive end of the X-men.

Apart from that, Magneto's long term plans did not make much sense to me, if only because the stakes were so vague. The show seems to suggest that Magneto's actions would permanently end electricity on earth, and nothing else. I wasn't the only one who thought the effects would be worse: the earth's magnetic field protects our atmosphere and deflects radiation: over time, the earth would become uninhabitable without it, even for most mutants.

Is Asteroid M just supposed to take in a couple of mutants at a time? Is it capable of sustaining itself? Is magneto using the situation to leverage political concessions? None of this is clear.

In the end, both Magneto and Bastion are reasoned with. Something that Magneto had previously insisted was impossible. So I feel like the show doesn't really grapple with the fact that Bastion is politically well supported: he's powerful, but both humans and world leaders are more than willing to work with him.

Both Bastion and Magneto ruin their reputation and betray their ideals in the finale, which prevents the writers from having to present their ideals to be taken seriously.

Had Bastion not immediately turned on the world leaders, he would have served his overall goal to turn humans and mutants against each other much better.

Had Magneto talked about his long term plans and how they ultimately served to protect mutants, the X-men would be forced to grapple with the fact that humans have never stopped hating and oppressing mutants because of their heroics, and presumably never will.

I believe these choices make the finale less interesting than they could have been. In my opinion it would be better if it went something like this:

Bastion was always planning to let Magneto escape, knowing he would react in the way he did.

Although he planned to anger Magneto more and release him at the perfect time, he had Sinister implant him with one of his control gems just in case (this will only be revealed in the second act).

The sentinels were intentionally weaker than Trask to avoid martyring the X-men, and in my estimation would only fight the X-men away from the public eye.

After Magneto shuts them down, the sleepers are indistinguishable from normal, dead humans.

This is used as a propaganda tool to blame the X-men for overreacting to a protest. You could have a subplot here about footage not being available in the 90's and how this is why he does this now.

The X-men all depart for Asteroid M to reason with Magneto. They can talk about the stakes more and Magneto explains his plan will save mutants and mocks Xavier's blind optimism.

Then the Avengers arrive and things escalate. We call that the Magneto protocols. Captain America or Iron Man could provoke Erik, and Sinister could activate his failsafe control.

This can result in a hectic melee in which Xavier is fighting to break Magneto's brainwashing, while several people are trying to kill Magneto, including Wolverine. Others, like Rogue, are trying to stop the killing.

Magneto is stabbed and rips the Adamantium from Logan, and Xavier discovers that the only way to break Sinister's hold over Magneto is to erase Erik's trauma. It works in tandem with the brainwashing. Hatred weakens his mind and so forth. And although he loathes to do so, he does do it: Magneto loses his memories and is convinced to restore power. Thus the seed of Onslaught is planted.

Then Prime sentinels attack, with the Avengers showing hesitation at first because they look like mind controlled civilians.

This time they are not holding back. They kill Magneto and Charles. The Primes cause Asteroid M to crash, and they have to work together to evacuate, keep the Asteroid from crashing, and take down Bastion and Sinister, who are in an American facility surrounded by primes. Maybe the Avengers clearly complain about the optics of taking a side politically: they ultimately come around, but it makes the Avengers controversial as well. Bastion will spread the rumor that they are psychically brainwashed.

Sinister activates Cable as well, and Bastion can take his arm after Phoenix manages to free him. Maybe he even kills Cable, or someone else. Given how Gambit died at the hands of his minion, it's fitting that he would prove actually dangerous.

Angered by the death toll, the remaining X-men and the Avengers team up to fight Bastion. He then surrenders. The Avengers want to take him in, but Cyclops kills him. With his dying breath, he taunts Cyclops with the fact that the dream is dead: whether he dies or is spared, anti-mutant opinion will thrive. The Avengers leave, and it's not clear where public opinion will fall.

Sure, this ending doesn't put everyone in the same place as they were, but I think it would be more effective follow-through on the themes of this season. We can set up a more radical approach for the X-men.

If you really want to do the time travel thing, we can have Bastion activate a self-destruct and have them all be missing afterward.

There are CLONES, and MINDCONTROL, and SO MANY OTHER REASONS that those would be necessary, both incapicitation and death should be plans for EVERYONE. Because they WILL turn on you eventually, through whatever magic or cloning or alternate universe shenanigans. Bruce is RIGHT to have them.

Thinking about the JL finding out that Bruce has contingency plans for all of his kids and being horrified. But when the League asks them about it, all the kids are like “yeah! we actually all have them for each other just in case” and move on like it’s perfectly normal to have three different ways to take out your brother on hand (for emergencies).

He offers a half-shrug, even as he allows Astarion to grab his hand. He follows the other man to the bedroom, pausing in the doorway for a moment to take it in.

He shivers somewhat at the kisses to his knuckles, stepping closer to lean against Astarion for a moment. "It wasn't pleasant," he agrees quietly. "To be quite frank, I wish that we had been allowed to fully fade and rest. But... I, at least, was needed still. So I understand why the captain had done what he had done."

Before laying down on the bed, he strips off the loose bathrobe that Astarion had given him earlier. He drapes it across the foot of the bed, where it will be out of the way, before laying down.

He curls close to Astarion, resting his head on the other man's shoulder and closing his eyes again. He releases a breath he hadn't realized he'd been holding. "It's different," he admits.

"In the Soul Society, as a result of all that had happened... I felt no desire or anything of the sort. I felt nothing, I thought nothing, I wanted nothing. I was merely a weapon, a tool to be used. The only thing I knew was pain. But... Here, for some odd reason, it's all come back. The pain is still there, certainly, and I've no doubt that when it returns in full-force I'll be incapicitated for a while until I get used to it again. But... Thoughts, feelings, desires, the sensations of things beyond pain are returned."

He is pensive for a moment, before continuing. "I appreciate it, and yet I find it worrying. I was the way that I was for a reason, so that the pain would not incapicitate me. For all of these things to be returned to me, it worries me that the measures taken to keep my soul, and that which binds it together, stable may not be working as intended here. Unlike my other visits to other realms beyond those I'm used to, this one may be on much more of a time limit before something terrible happens."

Astarion nodded. He took a small deep breath. "I'm sorry. That must be awfully painful to deal with.." He sighed softly. He gently took Izuru's flesh hand and led him back to the bedroom. "This way, darling."

He gently took Izuru's hand and kissed his knuckles. "I cannot imagine or pretend to know what that must have been like." He murmured softly, sympathetically.

He led him back to the bedroom and he let him lay down. He cuddled him close and smiled at him with his fangs cutely poking out.

"Thank you for indulging me, darling. And for opening up to me. It isn't often I have a man as wonderful as you as my companion."

Short bio:

-one of the six (seven if Lucifer is included) seraphim created by God.

-Classical isekai plot. Fell asleep after playing WHB game, woke up in the middle of God making them. Can't remember procedure, only knows the fight of beliefs: I'm an atheist vs I love God. Keeps internal conflict for rest of life, pops up when alone and stressed out.

-different earth than WHB earth. Was sleeping after playing regular daily grind of WHB game.

-does not know how they got into WHB. Is there a being higher than God. Who knows? (It's us, readers/authors hehe~) Is currently in Hell keeping an eye on Solomon.

-Hell is like living in different human history time periods. Would like to record and take pictures of each country. Kind of a interesting tourist-y feel.

-Goes wherever Solomon goes. Usually sleeps in different beds. Will do single if necessary. Getting to be single lots of time due to Solomon's interference.

Character:

-Quiet and curious. Has small world of people they care for.

-Main priority is Solomon so treats others as thin air. If continuous interactions, treats other devil/angel/human with same tolerance as Solomon. Solomon and Tino is like "chaotic person vs. why are you like this, better make sure more chaos isn't done again". Will usually follow with whatever Solomon does.

-Again, Solomon is top priority. Protect him. After that, tries to get main fighters incapicitated so no further damage is done. (Hates to see damage costs racked up, once a low-income human)

Voice/The script you would like to see: normal everyday life, somehow is in the middle of a game of tag spanning the entire country. Dammit Solomon.

-listen to "His Fault", "An Evil Blunder", and "Brothers Panic!". That kind of crazy shenanigans. Otherwise, usually "Wheat and Sky" on a regular day. (Can you tell what my other favorite game is?)

Important facts: is the only one that knows WHB was a game. The power of magic (belonging to authors/readers) blocks this info from being mind-read or otherwise not stated. Follows Solomon because wants to know what made him disappear later. Somehow dense AF, cannot tell that Solomon loves him romantically or any other devils. And also, one of the shortest people, 5'0 feet or 152.4 cm. Others like to put their arm on their head, arm rest head. Others (that Tino are comfortable with), can carry them around. Tino would wrap arms around neck and usually sleep.

Demons to include in the fic: Solomon, Mammon, Sitri

-Solomon already stated above. Otherwise, friendly and tolerant with whatever Solomon does. Like to hold Tino any chance they got. Solomon considers him as invaluable friend (lover plz plz plz) to have.

-Mammon ticks off Tino's love language (revieving gifts, unlimited wallet). Also he big and huggy. Very much like. Mammon likes small things (as seen in his Attack of Kings comic). Interesting small seraphim. Likes to squeeze butt while carrying him. Tino considers it a nice massage.

-Sitri sees him as suspicious. Angels are enemies. Must keep an eye on him. Can probably recognize his heartbeat amongst a big crowd after listening for so long. Can at least trust him to protect Solomon at all costs. Tino considers his spying as irrelevant, will ignore.

The tone in which it should be written: funny, fluffy

Narrative type: third person if possible

The script you would like to see: regular Hell day interrupted by Solomon having "fun", ends with sleeping with Solomon again (what you mean the other bed is wet?).

Time for some rules, so we won't get lost

The concept is simple. You give me your precious OCs/MCs, I adopt them for a while, write fanfic (related to WHB, of course) and hand them over to your loving hands.

For now, I plan to choose 3-5 people to write for. This may change if more people apply. If one applies, I will write for one. If 96 apply, I will choose more. We'll figure it out.

You can apply in two ways. One is to reblog this post and describe everything in reply, the second is to create your own post with the hashtag #whbmcshuffle Preferably both at once. I don't want to accidentally lose any application. I also recommend following this tag for the time being because I will post further information under it.

The people I will write for will be drawn randomly. I want it to be fair, and I guess this is the only way I won't be biased when I see mutuals I like or Andrea my favorite demons.

You can apply for one week. Since we may all be in different time zones, submissions will close when this survey ends.

on the whole I’ve enjoyed PoE2 more than PoE, but have been more invested in PoE’s main story just because it has a much more straightforward villain whose audacity is borderline hilarious to me

So if Azula started using Zuko as a scapegoat after she began suspecting that the avatar might be alive (meaning she brought Zuko home solely because she cared about him) do you think that means she wouldn't have brought him home as a hero, but rather as a prisoner, had she known from the get go that the avatar had survived? Cuz much as she cares about Zuko and wants him on her side, she can't afford to risk too much for him to her own detriment, being brought up in the competitive environment in an abusive household where she might get disowned and all.

I think if she had known that the Avatar had survived, she probably would have resumed pursuing the Gaang(while Aang is still wounded and incapicitated) as soon as possible with Mai and Ty Lee, and she would have likely dragged Zuko along with her. She would send Iroh back as a prisoner and send home news that there was a potential attack during the Day of Black Sun, but there are massive advantages to beginning pursuit of the Avatar immediately, so I don't think she would go home at all.

Aang is a threat to Fire Nation national security, and of course killing or capturing him is a good way to earn Ozai's approval. It's worth noting that Azula probably spent more time in Book 3 pursuing the Avatar than any other objective.

I think Azula was genuine in her comments that she felt that Zuko had proven himself, so I don't think she would want to betray him if she could avoid it. Ozai is far away and Zuko is close by, and I think that made Azula more willing to twist Ozai's orders in Zuko's favor. Azula could emphasize Zuko's role in the conquest of Ba Sing Se and the capture of Iroh to justify giving Zuko a second chance. And if Zuko ended up playing a role in capturing or killing Aang, it would be easy for Azula to argue that he deserved to be let back into Ozai's favor.

Of course, there's no telling how Ozai would react to Azula "pardoning" Zuko on her own initiative and running off with him to pursue the Avatar. He might react by exiling Azula and her friends for their subversion of his will, or declaring all four fire teens outlaws and fugitives.
