I have to agree. I will argue that cwac is well written but it's essentially just different characters with a bnha coat of paint, it was written so many years ago where it could've technically been a direction taken but canon has deviated so far from it no longer resembles anything close to it. The problem begins when some take it as a canon interpretation when it was not leading to infighting and misreading of canon events and character, although this is no fault of the author who I believe is still very talented.

When I first got into the fandom circa 2018, right before Hawks debuted, I was super obsessed with Deku and so CWAC was up my alley. But the moment I started paying attention to the villains, somehow it clearly dawned on me how not only OOC the story was but just how much the author clearly dislikes characters like Shigaraki or Dabi and how much it shows, fairly juvenile-y.

I won't argue that the author isn't talented, but over the years a friend who was also a very Big Writer at the time of CWAC's popularity 2018-ish has told me how discussions about the League went very badly.

The issue still is the fandom. I absolutely blame DFO on CWAC and the other work of the author that the name escapes me. Even now, when I look at DFO dynamics or the weird afo inko obsession they absolutely clearly have elements from the fic, so essentially what CWAC did was establish such a clear fanon that even non-fic readers have taken it as part of the theory.

I mean, again this is more the issue of the fandom in general just clinging on to very old perceptions of characters and plots. I'm going to rant about that below.

I'll use Tomura as an example because what made me dislike CWAC was the handling of him when I started to realize just how rich Horikoshi made Tomura 's character. Some shig-haters never get passed Kamino in what they think of him, and there are the LOV stans who haven't caught up with the idea that actually the MLA arc was *bad* for the League and are still in the viewpoint that the villains are revolutionaries. So there's these spaces where Shigaraki is just seen as a murderous incel versus Shigaraki is Che Guevara incarnate.

And these echo chambers are so removed from each other that very often little nuance penetrates, so you have incredibly established fanon truths that are rarely deviated from and people just stop examining the source material. Then conflict arises when you leave the echo chamber and talk to someone else.

Also worth mentioning is that the fandom echo chambers manage to function as they do by assigning moral values to any "thought crimes" that don't line up with accepted fanon-"canon". Don't think the League are super-radicals who will actually liberate society and create a Marxist utopia? Well you're a capitalist pig who supports cops, bye. You can see it with the very hardcore hero stans who think liking a villain means condoning murder too, "why do you like terrorists?" Or come into my inbox to tell me Jin's murder was justified. Fandom is very good at policing itself into cliques, to the detriment of everyone, I think.

It also, I think, created the situation where people in this fandom genuinely hate the work, keep reading it in bad faith due to those ingrained fanon expectations and preconceptions of what the work should be, and then get more and more resentful as time goes on and their views are not even acknowledged.

Seriously, just look back at the reaction of hero stan Twitter and reddit bros at Himiko's whole fight with Ochako. There was so much hatred of how Himiko was being redeemed.

There are still canon DFO fans. I feel sorry for those who had to look at this chapter and realize that what they've sunk so much time into was not real. Disappointment hurts, man.

Anyway, thanks for listening to me rant. I find it fascinating in an academic sense how so much of fandom was shaped by a fic and I wonder if at some point someone will examine it critically.

Take Toritsuka from Saiki K for example,

He isn’t well liked and his pervertedness is NOT overlooked/glorified in the anime or the fandom. He may be good looking but he isn’t beloved, because he is a creep.

So, Incel the reason girls don’t like you isn’t because you are unattractive (you probably are tho) it’s because you have no personality other than being creepy.

Its canon. Uraraka throws up a huge amount of blood after getting gutted (like in Toga's dream? Where the bird did it. Maybe since Hori retconned Toga as never having killed the bird but drunk blood from a dead carcass she found. Toga was the sparrow all along). The next panel is literally only Uraraka's boob and the hand encircling it. Twice flashback asks Toga what her villain name would be which will be revealed after a short break of one week. Hori might retcon it to being about Toga needing to support them midair or pivot them around since they're floating just like rn Toga is on the path to having been simply a completely misunderstood girl who committed zero crimes. And Uraraka's shining moment is ignoring every pro-hero like the Pussycats who were shown being stampeded underfoot of the Twice clone wave and her own injuries and molestation to still want to help Toga as Tsuyu declares Uraraka's deep want of understanding and helping this tantrum throwing sad girl who like Touya has never had anyone who hear her side.

The Uraraka doll stabbed through her abdomen and left side(which breast is Toga's hand. So possibly the next area to be stabbed?). Hawks was stabbed through the dead-center, presumably heart. While Deku and Endeavor were stabbed through the forehead. No one else shown had stab wounds.

I'm not really all that surprised to hear it was the truth...

I hate how Horikoshi has handled Toga. She's a female incel but one that fandom comes to excuse and defend without fail everytime.

Hori never needed to make Toga's blood-drinking urge sexual but he did which brings up massive issues with consent about her actions against her victims BEYOND just the issue of her hurting them. If she was a male character, fandom would be jumping over themselves to proclaim how disgusting she is.

I don't really see the point in adding that she didn't kill the bird, she might not have but she still showed unhealthy urges by drinking it's blood. Are they trying to say that her parents made her into the monster that now kills for blood? That taking blood from a bleeding person without their consent was ever any good?

I also saw the panels with the Quirk Counselling she received and it's clear that they're just Hori's attempt at trying to make her more sympathetic for not getting the right help however again without proper set up in the world with this being a genuine issue, it falls very flat.

We've had many characters with "bad" quirks, why not show us how Hitoshi has experienced the same issue with counselling to show us that it's an ongoing issue that isn't being tackled?

What side of Toga is Uraraka supposed to hear? How she was able to fit in with society until she decided "fuck it" and hurt people? Or that it's okay that Uraraka has been a victim of harassment by this girl because of her "crush" on her because she's just "misunderstood"?

It feels very... gross.

I'm a firm believer that urges and problematic thoughts aren't bad for people to have as long as you don't act upon them. It's when you act on these urges to hurt others when you've crossed the line and Toga hasn't just crossed the line, she's danced all over it.

I’ve been lurking here for a while now and I just gotta say this. There’s this constant undercurrent argument about lgbtq/cis harassment. LGBTQ anons and commenters describing how they’re harassed for their lgbtq headcanons, and cis anons and commenters describing how they’re harassed for their cis headcanons and it often seems neither side fully accepts the reality of the other.

Let me start by saying that historically, of course it is the lgbtq side that has had it much worse in terms of suppression and harassment. There’s no question about that and anyone denying that is dreaming.

The thing is, in this current climate, no one has it better. Both sides are right and both sides are wrong. It all depends where you choose to share your headcanons and content. On Reddit for example, lgbtq headcanons and fan content will get a lot of abuse, on Tumblr, cis headcanons and content gets harassment and let’s not pretend otherwise. Both sides face unwanted interactions and bullying and saying that getting shit for cis headcanons and content doesn’t matter because historically they’ve had it too good…excuse me, but two wrongs don’t make a right.

The ones harassing lgbtq members of fandom are toxic, conservative and incel types. The ones harassing cis members are the militant, vocal minority of the lgbtq community. Let’s not pretend that the average teenage girl/boy who just wants to doodle their favourite ship after school is the one hurling abuse. It’s coming from people with extreme views and they’re present on both sides.

The problem comes from two things. Firstly, where you post about your headcanons. I post m/f fan content and on some platforms it’s very well received, on others not so much. Secondly, there are many people who, either through plain ignorance or wilful stupidity, equate people not explicitly agreeing with their headcanons or content as a moral failing.

Antis do it. But proshippers do it too. I’ve seen plenty of subtle and not so subtle examples from anons and commenters here.

Let me be frank. Many cis people are not interested in lgbtq headcanons. They just aren’t. It is not their experience. They can’t relate to it. It isn't a sign of phobia or hate. Just like I’m sure many lgbtq people are not particularly interested cis/hetero headcanons. And let me very clear I am talking about HEADCANONS ONLY here. Personally, I’m not interested in seeing posts describing in detail why a character from X anime is gay/lesbian/bi/trans/pan/ace etc when it has never been officially confirmed. I am not interested in reading HEADCANONED m/m, f/f or other lgbtq fanfic or seeing that fanart. If you like that sort of thing, fantastic. You do you. I, personally, do not care about or spend time thinking about characters' sexualities beyond canon. Conor and Oliver from ‘How To Get Away With Murder’? Adorable. Soojong and Taehoon from ‘An Innocent Sin’? Compelling. Deku and Bakugo? Nope. Sherlock and Watson? No thanks. I’ll never see that as anything more than a wonderful friendship.

And the thing is, I’m sure there are people who will get really, really irrationally aggressive about me saying this. Who think that because I quietly have zero interest in and avoid lgbtq headcanons that that somehow makes me phobic or hateful towards the lgbtq community. And I have to say, what I enjoy in my fandom space has absolutely no bearing on what I do and how I treat people in real life, as hard as that is to believe for many active in fandom spaces. For some reason, it’s fiction is not the same as reality until you don’t engage with or produce fan content in the ‘right’ way.

Someone not interested in engaging with or supporting or even liking particular headcanons, no matter how popular they are, has nothing to say about their actual morals. Not being interested in and not hyping up this or that headcanon and instead producing content that's the opposite of a popular headcanon is not the same as actively hating a real life group of people. And I’m surprised I have to say this but I do.

I will march with and stand with whatever group is being unfairly treated, whether it’s based on class, sex, race or other and campaign for social and political change FOR REAL PEOPLE because that’s what actually matters. Just because I mute and block the m/m tag in my fandom doesn’t make me homophobic or hateful. You know why I block it? Because m/m does absolutely nothing for me, but more importantly, I’m in love with one of the main characters and seeing him romantically involved with anyone, girl or guy, makes me upset. So I block all romantic and shippy tags related to the character. Sometimes it’s just like that. It has nothing to do with being against the lgbtq community but for very strange and personal reasons. Or very benign reasons. Maybe people just don’t want to deal with sexuality discourse in their fandom space because it’s where they come to relax and forget about all political and social stuff and just shitpost memes.

Your headcanons are your headcanons and no one will take them away from you. Both cis and lgbtq sides get shit for their content from a vocal, toxic minority on different platforms these days and everyone needs to remember the old ‘Don’t like, don’t read.’ The more we keep going on about who has it worse, the more divisive fandom spaces will become, even worse than they are now.

Bakugou-hate is often weird

There is some kind of vaguely sexist vitriol in the hate Katsuki Bakugou gets.

I have noticed that all characters get hate but Katsuki hate gets the loudest vitriol.

Uraraka hate is usually over-analyses of her character, or women who do not feel represented by the only main female character Hori has (that is why female fans seem to prefer Momo, as a female character).

Deku's hate is usually weird edgy memes and how Mirio was supposed to be better.

But I never get Uraraka hate or Deku hate on my Uraraka and Deku posts.

Bakugou's hate? This gets some weird incel vibes and morality vibes.

This is the kind of things you get if you are a Bakugou fan. There is this dislike for what girls and women like in general, and the fact that Bakugou is mainly preferred by women, girls, gender non comforming people, nb people and queer people is mixed it all up with it.

It becames sometimes quite explicit.

This was about ships in BNHA, this idea that we should pretend certain ships are not popular because women like them.

Bakugou is the same. There is this desire to discredit his popularity because "it is just a bunch of fangirls" as if things that girls and women support is automatically bad.

This accusation that there are tons of "fangirls" inflating Bakugou's numbers as he is not that popular... when multiple voting is pretty common for all characters.

Ex: multiple voting for Uraraka (it is a screenshot but this was a video with at least 30 SJ to vote for Uraraka, from one person, as you can see it is 12 seconds and it is just filming the big pile of Shounen Jumps)

I suspect it is also the reason why MHA gets such a bad rep for being a "mid" anime, being a shounen that had more than half of its supporters as non male.

And yes, these are the kind of people that come out when you write about how much you like Bakugou:

So yeah, all characters have haters but the kind of weird sexist homophobic comments I see associated with Bakugou-hate? That is peculiar.

And the reason I can tell there is a difference is that I have met some Bakugou-haters who are perfectly normal people. They dislike the character and act like the usual common "dislikers". For example, you can see essays written on how and why someone dislike Deku and Uraraka or Mirio or whoever, and you might disagree but they are usually perfectly normal in fandoms. This behaviour here, in this post - this stuff is abnormal.
