I was gonna leave this topic alone because as a black woman, this part of the discourse frustrates me too OP. I’d much rather shout silliness and keep it light. Plus, I am in no way getting into it with strangers on the internet, ESPECIALLY not on tumblr of all places But you are absolutely right OP! Imma get this off my chest and then go back to crying over “see you next year.”

A few of yall’s (not OPs) takes on Nathan’s arc, specifically around him being a POC, are reductive. I’ve seen what OP has pointed out, as well as the “you took the only brown character on the show and turned him evil, how dare you handle this POC character so poorly” comment made and it bothers me a LOT. It’s on the opposite end of the “Nate is irredeemable” spectrum which also bothers me. The pass that seemingly irredeemable (Jamie did some -excuse the fruity language bc I typically don’t cuss- FUCKED UP SHIT last season and yet we adore him) white characters get vs. the visceral reaction to POC characters going through a dark phase is JUST as frustrating as “I can’t believe one of the only POC characters is being turned into a villain” angry cries. It suggests, again, that POC characters are judged differently than their white counterparts. And THAT’S the issue. POC characters should be able to make the same mistakes and shoot…just be bad people sometimes because that’s what humans are like. They are complicated and even when people are nice to them, because of their unhealed trauma, they do mean things and betray/hurt those very people. Humans, folks. It’s kinda our thing.

I’ve seen it suggested that Nathan’s somehow lost his depth or is being done a disservice as a POC because of this season’s arc. That is just straight up incorrect. It is…factually inaccurate. He is, aside from maybe Ted and Rebecca, ARGUABLY the most complex character on the show, and we’ve been able to discover and explore multiple facets of who he is because of this arc. Instead of keeping him this one-dimensional loyal puppy that everyone loves while his white peers experience a damn roller coaster of emotions, we get to see him wrestle through some very complex emotional issues himself. From his bullying by the team, his emotional abuse/neglect from his dad, his (perceived by me) infantilization by his mother, his relationship with women in general but also specifically Keeley and where all that stems from, his insecurity, his struggle with power, etc. Nate is RIPE for an evil arc and it’s been a treat to watch Nick Mohammed kill this role. And I’m not finna let y’all ruin that for him. Even if y’all are (idk what it is y’all think y’all are doing…championing? yeah we’ll go with that) “championing” him. Please let me assure you, as a POC myself, you are not championing POC characters going through their dark forest by saying that the writers have done them a disservice. Not in Ted Lasso’s case at least. It’s actually dismissive and unhelpful and reductive and not at all the allyship you think it is and I want y’all to know that. Respectfully. Withholding opportunities to explore the messiness of their humanity and keeping them perfect and magical is the real disservice.

And for the “die Nate” crowd, I encourage y’all to confront your biases. It doesn’t matter when Nate’s arc is taking place. Just because Rebecca and Jamie started as villains and Nathan started as a good guy means NOTHING. Ted treated all three of them with the same kindness and Rebecca still tried to sabotage him up through 1x9, Jamie still was disrespectful and got the team relegated with glee and truly didn’t want to try to get better until everything fell to shit for him in S2. Again, all while Ted was kind and vulnerable with them as he was/is with Nate. And yet, here y’all are, wanting him to die, saying he’s unforgivable, even with knowing what his baggage is. Better than we did Rebecca’s and Jamie’s in S1 I’d argue. So…confront yall’s biases. Like I said in another post, he doesn’t get a pass at all. I’m mad too. We can be mad and want him held accountable. But be goldfish the same way y’all have been for the two white antagonists from last season we all now adore.

jamie has done some really shitty things (including encouraging his friends to bully nate) and he is beloved in this fandom. rebecca has done shitty things too and yet she is beloved in this fandom and shipped with ted. there was no discourse close what i'm seeing with nate. everyone "understood" them, forgave and accepted their redemption and now nate is being a dick and everyone hates and wants him dead.

as with rebecca and jamie, nate's actions are coming from a far more nuanced place (he's a fucking brilliant actor) than spite. hurt people, hurt people. this is in no way to defend what he did to ted because it's awful and to keeley, but honestly, i don't care if it comes across that way, because yet again, i find myself needing to shield and protect a character of colour for being complicated.
