The fear and horror with which the Indian Muslims are passing days under the Modi years can hardly be grasped by Desi and Videshi intellectuals, academics, researchers and columnists. Yes, they may present the pathetic marginalisation of Indian Muslims on all fronts of life with data, statistics, charts, and graphs. But they cannot feel a Muslim’s fear during his train travel in cow belt states or during his Friday prayer at a mosque. Fear is looming large in his surroundings. His good neighbours may become the worst enemies, provided the situation demands so. Betrayal is lurking behind each door. If the time comes, it will exhibit its monstrosity with full force. When our neighbours are clapping hands and worshipping the ubiquitous presence of the most adorable man on earth, the mass murderer, then the news of genocide calls loses its steam. The steam of genocide is manufactured at each home with countless WhatsApp forwards and hate messages.

Book 51: Ayesha at Last

Random letters UZ led to Uzma Jalaluddin. I decided to go with her first book Ayesha at Last, which is a Pride and Prejudice retelling with Indian Muslims in Canada. Quite the premise!

Ayesha is a poet trying to pursue teaching from a semi-poor family living partially off her rich uncle's generosity. Khalid is the son of a rich family who is so fundamentalist he won't touch a woman, even to shake hands in a business setting.

They meet and through a series of mishaps Khalid judges Ayesha to be not the kind of girl he'd like to associate with and Ayesha finds Khalid a stuck up fundamentalist. But they end up growing closer through another series of mishaps, and are a regular Lizzy and Mr. Darcy.

It's not a perfect parallel to P&P, as in it has its own personality, but it lampshades it from the very beginning and fits pretty well throughout. The best character is Masood, a life coach who courts first Ayesha's cousin Hafsa, then when rejected tries for Ayesha.

My only real problem with the book is Kahilid, Mr. Darcy, refusing to shake hands with women, but shaking hands with men. I get that he feels it's against his religion to touch a strange woman, but this is Canada. He should be shaking hands with *nobody* rather than just one gender. It reminded me of Mike Pence eating alone only with men. Both or neither is right, one but not another is wrong. I don't want to come across as Sheila, the token prejudiced asshole, but I think that's a fair solution. Also that and depicting a post-Roe (granted in Canada) abortion as dangerous.

BEST LINE: "An ice-cream truck slowly cruised the street, a Pied Piper parting children from their allowance money."

A little about him:

Tarek Fatah (November 1949–24 April 2023) was a Pakistani-Canadian journalist and author.

Fatah advocated LGBT rights, a separation of religion and state, opposition to sharia law, and advocacy for a liberal, progressive form of Islam.

He called himself "an Indian born in Pakistan" and "a Punjabi born into Islam" and is a vocal critic of the Pakistani religious and political establishment.

To this end, Fatah has criticized the partition of India.

The struggles he had to face for speaking the truth and opposing radical Pakistani Islamic policies:

He was a leftist student leader in the 1960s and 1970s and was imprisoned twice by military regimes.

In 1977, he was charged with sedition and barred from journalism by the Zia-ul Haq regime.

In early 2011, Fatah said that he received a threat via Twitter. Fatah contacted Toronto Police Service and later met with two police officers from 51 Division. Fatah said that police intelligence officers, one a Muslim officer who had shut down a previous investigation into a death threat, shut down the investigation and claimed there was no threat.

Assassination attempt:

In 2017, Indian police arrested two men who were hired by Chhota Shakeel to assassinate Fatah.

بھارتی الیکشن اور مسلمانوں کی شامت

 بھارت میں اگلے دو ماہ میں عام انتخابات متوقع ہیں۔ اب تک کے آنکڑوں کے مطابق حکمران جماعت بی جے پی کی جیت بظاہر یقینی ہے۔ یوں دو ہزار چودہ کے بعد سے نریندر مودی مسلسل تیسری بار وزیرِ اعظم بننے کا ریکارڈ قائم کریں گے۔ حزبِ اختلاف کی دو درجن جماعتوں نے چند ماہ قبل ’’ انڈیا‘‘ نامی اتحاد قائم کیا تھا، وہ باہمی نفاق کی نذر ہوتا جا رہا ہے۔ اس اتحاد میں جتنی جماعتیں ہیں، ان سب کے رہنما اگلا وزیرِ اعظم بننے کا خواب دیکھ رہے ہیں۔ انڈیا اتحاد میں شامل ایک اہم جماعت جنتا دل کے سربراہ اور ریاست بہار کے وزیرِ اعلیٰ نتیش کمار نے دوبارہ بی جے پی سے ہاتھ ملا لیا ہے جب کہ مغربی بنگال کی وزیرِ اعلیٰ اور ترنمول کانگریس کی سربراہ ممتا بینر جی اور کانگریس کے رہنما راہول گاندھی کے درمیان کچھاؤ کھل کے سامنے آ رہا ہے۔ راہول کانگریس کی حالیہ ریاستی انتخابات میں خراب کارکردگی کے باوجود خود کو بادشاہ گر اور بی جے پی کے بعد سب سے بڑی ملک گیر جماعت کا قائد سمجھ رہے ہیں۔ وہ بھی اس حقیقت سے آنکھیں چار نہیں کر پا رہے کہ کانگریس کبھی ملک گیر جماعت ہوا کرتی تھی، اب نہیں ہے۔ ’’ انڈیا ’’ اتحاد میں لوک سبھا کے ٹکٹوں کی تقسیم کی بابت بھی اختلافات ہیں۔ میڈیا ننانوے فیصد بی جے پی نواز ہے اور اپوزیشن اتحاد کو مسلسل آڑے ہاتھوں لے رہا ہے۔

بی جے پی نے ’’ انڈیا ’’ اتحاد کے اردگرد دائرہ مزید تنگ کرنے کے لیے مرکزی تحقیقاتی ادارے سی بی آئی کو حزبِ اختلاف کے رہنماؤں کے پیچھے لگا کر بدعنوانی اور کرپشن کے پرانے اور نئے مقدمات کھول دیے ہیں۔ جب کہ بی جے پی کی سوشل میڈیا طاقت بھی بھرپور طریقے سے حرکت میں ہے۔ بظاہر بی جے پی کو اس بار ’’ مسلم کارڈ ’’ استعمال کرنے کی ضرورت نہیں ہے۔ پھر بھی یہ محاذ مسلسل گرم ہے۔ اکیس جنوری کو ایودھیا میں رام مندر کے افتتاح سے بی جے پی نے جس انداز سے اپنی انتخابی مہم کا صور پھونکا ہے۔ اس کا اثر ان تمام ریاستوں میں محسوس ہونے لگا ہے جہاں بی جے پی برسراقتدار ہے۔ مثلاً بنارس کی قدیم گیان وپی مسجد کو ایک مقامی عدالت نے پرانا مندر قرار دے کر اسے سربمہر کرنے کے بعد احاطے میں پوجاپاٹ کی اجازت دے دی۔ دارلحکومت دلی میں بلدیہ کے بلڈوزروں نے دو مساجد گرا دی ہیں۔ ان میں سے ایک چھ سو سال پرانی مسجد جو مہرولی کے علاقے میں واقع تھی، اسے سرکاری زمین پر غیر قانونی تعمیر قرار دے کے منہدم کیا گیا۔

اس دوران واشنگٹن ڈی سی میں قائم ایک تھنک ٹینک انڈیا ہیٹ لیب ( آئی ایچ ایل ) نے گذشتہ ہفتے جو سالانہ تحقیقاتی رپورٹ جاری کی ہے، اس کے مطابق دو ہزار تئیس میں روزانہ ملک میں اوسطاً دو مسلم دشمن واقعات رونما ہوئے۔ چھ سو اڑسٹھ نفرت انگیز واقعات میں سے پچھتر فیصد ( چار سو تریپن ) ان ریاستوں میں ہوئے جہاں بی جے پی اقتدار میں ہے۔ ان میں سے بھی تین ریاستوں (مہاراشٹر ، اتر پردیش اور مدھیہ پردیش) میں مجموعی طور پر تینتالیس فیصد نفرت انگیز تقاریر ہوئیں اور فرقہ وارانہ کشیدگی بڑھانے کا مواد پھیلایا گیا۔ ہریانہ اور اترا کھنڈ کا شمار اگرچہ بی جے پی کی زیرِ اقتدار چھوٹی ریاستوں میں ہوتا ہے مگر وہاں مسلمان برادریوں کے خلاف اگست سے اب تک سب سے زیادہ پرتشدد واقعات دیکھنے میں آئے۔ رپورٹ کے مطابق زیادہ تر نفرتی تقاریر اور مواد کا پھیلاؤ آر ایس ایس سے جڑی دو ذیلی تنظیموں وشو ہندو پریشد اور بجرنگ دل کے ذریعے ہوا۔ دونوں تنظیموں کو دو ہزار اٹھارہ میں امریکی سی آئی اے انتہاپسند مذہبی گروہوں کی فہرست میں شامل کر چکی ہے۔ 

مسلمانوں کے خلاف میڈیا، سوشل میڈیا اور سیاسی پلیٹ فارموں سے نفرت انگیز پروپیگنڈہ اب بھارت میں ایک معمول کی بات کے طور پر نچلی سطح تک قبول کیا جا چکا ہے۔ اگلے دو ماہ کے دوران انتخابی مہم میں اس نفرت میں کئی گنا اضافہ ہو سکتا ہے۔ نفرت انگیز پروپیگنڈے کا محور وہی پرانے موضوعات ہیں۔ لو جہاد یعنی ہندو لڑکیوں کو شادی کا جھانسہ دے کر مسلمان مذہب تبدیل کراتے ہیں۔ لینڈ جہاد یعنی مسلمان سرکاری زمین ہتھیا کر اپنی عبادت گاہیں تعمیر کر رہے ہیں۔ حلال جہاد یعنی مسلمان تاجر حلال کو بہانہ بنا کے ہندو کاروباریوں سے سامان نہیں لیتے تاکہ وہ معاشی طور پر کمزور ہو جائیں۔ پاپولیشن جہاد یعنی مسلمان اپنی تعداد تیزی سے بڑھا رہے ہیں تاکہ ہندوؤں پر غلبہ حاصل ہو سکے۔ حالانکہ یہ تمام پروپیگنڈہ نکات یکے بعد دیگرے منطق کی کسوٹی پر ڈھے چکے ہیں۔ مثلاً سرکار کے اپنے اعداد و شمار کے مطابق حالیہ برسوں میں مسلمانوں میں پیدائش کی شرح دیگر طبقات کے مقابلے میں تیزی سے کم ہوئی ہے۔

جب سے اسرائیل اور حماس کا جھگڑا شروع ہوا ہے، آر ایس ایس کے بھگتوں کو مسلمان مخالف ایمونیشن کی ایک نئی کھیپ ہاتھ لگ گئی ہے۔ سات اکتوبر کے بعد سے ہر پانچویں تقریر فلسطینیوں سے نمٹنے کی اسرائیلی حکمتِ عملی کی سراہنا سے بھری ہوئی ہے۔ مثلاً وشو ہندو پریشد کے سربراہ پراوین تگڑیا نے ریاست ہریانہ میں سنگھی بھگتوں سے خطاب کرتے ہوئے کہا کہ ’’ اس وقت اسرائیل کی باری ہے۔ ہمیں بھی اپنے گلی محلوں میں ایسے ہی فلسطینیوں (مسلمان) کا سامنا ہے اور ان سے اپنی خوشحالی اور عورتوں کو بچانا ہمارے لیے بھی ایک بڑا چیلنج ہے‘‘۔ بی جے پی کے ایک رہنما کپل مشرا کے بقول اسرائیل کو آج جس صورتِ حال کا سامنا ہے، ہمیں تو یہ چودہ سو سال سے درپیش ہے۔ بی جے پی حکومت نے آئی ایچ ایل اور ہندوتوا واچ نامی تھنک ٹینک کی ویب سائٹس بھارت کی حدود میں بلاک کر دی ہیں۔ کیونکہ دونوں ویب سائٹس مسلم مخالف سرکاری و سیاسی پروپیگنڈے میں پیش کردہ خود ساختہ حقائق کو مسلسل چیلنج کر کے متوازی بیانیے کو تقویت دے رہی ہیں۔ 

( ٹیپ کا بند یہ ہے کہ دو روز قبل دلی کے علاقے کھجوری خاص میں بلدیہ کے بلڈوزروں نے وکیل حسن کا گھر تجاوز قرار دیتے ہوئے منہدم کر دیا۔ یہ وہی وکیل حسن ہیں۔ جنہوں نے نومبر میں اپنے ساتھیوں کی ریسکیو ٹیم کی مدد سے اتراکھنڈ میں کوئلے کی ایک کان کی دیواریں منہدم ہونے کے سبب دو ہفتے سے کان میں پھنسے اکتالیس مزدوروں کو بحفاظت زندہ نکال لیا تھا اور اس کارنامے پر وزیرِ اعظم نریندر مودی سے لے کے نیشنل میڈیا تک سب نے ہی وکیل حسن کو ایک قومی ہیرو قرار دیا تھا اور انھیں اور ان کی ٹیم کو چوطرف سے انعامات اور مبارک باد کے پیغامات سے لاد دیا تھا)۔

Update: 1445-02-02 Maybe we really do need an Ummah Day. Celebrating one segment of the Ummah shouldn’t subtract from the rest, it’s not a zero sum game. Classic contrary/contradictory dilemma.
