Wow, I am still reeling from seeing this event. One of the most profound dance-music-theatre experiences I have ever had.

If Elle Sofa Sara comes to a town near you, you should RUN to see and hear them.

From the Show notes:

“Elle Sofe is the voice of the Sami people, expressing their efforts to battle injustice and to retain and celebrate their culture, mirroring the experience of many of the world's indigenous peoples, including here in Canada.  We join the procession of the seven women in the show, marching in unity as they invite us into an evening of polyphonic Yoiking and powerful movement.”

The clips on Youtube do not do this Sami choreographer and the troop justice. Nonetheless, I will post to get the word out there.

Different (better) costumes inside and out than shown in the clips below. The performance started outside in -15 degree weather, before following them inside to the theatre and it ended with the seven dancers leaving the theatre.

The Gathering of Nations is the largest pow-wow in the United States and North America. It is held annually on the fourth weekend in April, on the Powwow Grounds at Expo NM, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Over 565 tribes from around the United States and 220 from Canada travel to Albuquerque to participate. April 25-27, 2024

the pathologic Kin is largely fictionalized with a created language that takes from multiple sources to be its own, a cosmogony & spirituality that does not correlate to the faiths (mostly Tengrist & Buddhist) practiced by the peoples it takes inspirations from, has customs, mores and roles invented for the purposes of the game, and even just a style of dress that does not resemble any of these peoples', but it is fascinating looking into specifically to me the sigils and see where they come from... watch this:

while the in-game words for Blood, Bones and Nerves are mongolian directly, it is interesting to note that their glyphs do not have a phonetic affiliation to the words (ex. the "Yas" layer of Bones having for glyph the equivalent of the letter F, the "Medrel" layer of Nerves having a glyph the equivalent of the letter È,...)

the leatherworks on the Kayura models', with their uses of angles and extending lines, remind me of the Phags Pa Script (used for Tibetan, Mongolian, Chineses, Uyghur language, and others)

some of the sigils also look either in part or fully inspired by Phags Pa script letters...

some look closer to the mongolian or vagindra (buryat) script

looking at the Herb Brides & their concept art, we can see bodypainting that looks like vertical buryat or mongolian script (oh hi (crossed out: Mark) Phags Pa script):

Chief Red Shirt - Oglala Sioux

Red Shirt (Oglala Lakota: Ógle Ša in Standard Lakota Orthography) (1847–1925) was an Oglala Lakota chief, warrior and statesman.

Chief Red Shirt camped with Crazy Horse and the rest of the Oglala at the Little Big Horn. The Oglala camp was next to the Cheyenne camp near the bottom of what is now known as Last Stand Hill. Red Shirt supported Crazy Horse during the Great Sioux War of 1876-1877 and the Ghost Dance Movement of 1890, and was a Lakota delegate to Washington in 1880.

Chief Red Shirt wore his hair to represent peace and war. One side of his hair was wrapped to indicate he was ready for peace, the other side was worn loose indicating his readiness for war. This was done when he traveled with Chief Red Cloud to Washington D.C.

Red Shirt surrendered with Crazy Horse in 1877. After the surrender he moved to an area that is now known as Red Shirt, SD. Red Shirt was one of the first Wild Westers with Buffalo Bill's Wild West and a supporter of the Carlisle Native Industrial School. Red Shirt became an international celebrity Wild Westing with Buffalo Bill's Wild West and his 1887 appearance in England captured the attention of Europeans and presented a progressive image of Native Americans.

On March 31, 1887, Chief Red Shirt, Chief Blue Horse and Chief American Horse and their families boarded the SS State of Nebraska in New York City, leading a new journey for the Lakota people when they crossed the ocean to England on Buffalo Bill's first international to perform at the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria and tour through Birmingham, Salford and London over a five–month period. The entourage consisted of 97 Indians, 18 buffaloes, 2 deer, 10 elk, 10 mules, 5 Texas steers, 4 donkeys, and 108 horses. Buffalo Bill treated Native American employees as equals with white cowboys. Wild Westers received good wages, transportation, housing, abundant food and gifts of clothing and cash from Buffalo Bill at the end of each season.

Photo from London - Red Shirt was lionized by the British press and his handsome features and stately bearing caused reporters to hang on his every word. Queen Victoria adored Chief Red Shirt and reportedly said after meeting him, "I know a real prince when I see him."

The US government's misinterpretation of peaceful protests enacted by the Native American Ghost Dance Movement in the 1880s serve as a poignant reminder of the consequences of prejudice and cultural misunderstanding.

Founded by a spiritual leader who preached pacifism and prophesized the restoration of the Native American way of life, the movement believed that through spiritual rituals, they could hasten the arrival of a new era and alleviate their suffering at the hands of their colonizers.

Fear and suspicion among government officials led them to perceive communal gatherings as precursors to rebellion, deeming them a threat to regional stability. This misperception tragically culminated in the devastating Wounded Knee Massacre.

it has been hard to summarize the grief i feel about Palestine. mostly because I am not arab, just married to one. But it has still been excruciatingly difficult to watch my arab family members and friends tip toe around what they say regarding the genocide happening right now, careful to be gentle and placid and non-threatening as possible when what they are saying amounts to "don't kill us." while pro-israel people equate them to less than human, while the most bland liberals shrug their shoulders and say they will kill arabs out of self defense.

you know sometimes i am naive enough to hope we've grown enough past my loved ones being called racial slurs as children by teachers post 9/11, but i am always swiftly brought back to the reality that the western world views arabs as an acceptable sacrifice.
