Living machines are essentially intensive, indoor artificial wetlands. Technical names for living machines include "advanced ecologically engineered systems" and "fixed-film ecology wastewater treatment systems." What they entail is mimicking natural processes of biological decomposition in a constructed aquatic environment. Simply put: dirty water goes in, passes through a series of self-contained aquatic ecosystems, and clean water comes out. The water is, in fact, so clean that it can be safely discharged into sensitive aquatic environments, like natural wetlands. And it does all of this without any of the usual chemical treatments or high-energy inputs of conventional wastewater treatment. Living machines produce such safe effluent because they achieve what is known as "tertiary treatment," meaning they successfully abate pollutants. How does a biological system do this? Simple: it uses them as inputs. Let me explain. The most common such pollutants are nitrogen and phosphorous. These happen to be the two nutrients whose out-of-whack flows have pushed us past a key planetary boundary. The biggest reason for this is industrial agriculture: it relies on synthetic nitrogen and mined phosphorous to exceed the carrying capacity of the ecosystems in which it operates. One of the big problems with industrial agriculture is that a great deal of the nitrogen and phosphorous applied isn't actually utilized by the food being produced: most of it runs off into waterways. This leads to far-reaching, ecologically catastrophic events ("eutrophication"). By constructing a complete food chain within the living machine, each step creates the food for the next step. Excess nutrients, like nitrogen and phosphorous, feed microorganisms which are then consumed by larger creatures and so on up the food chain, until we are left with harmless components and a great deal of life. The living machine converts pollution into biodiversity and clean water, instead of run-off and eutrophication. It's a prime example of true "regeneration."

Kujo had taken the signs and reveled in their promise, in the change he and Haruki had wrought. They’d taken something that was only a dream, a mere thought, a mere human, and created a legacy that would outlive them all as long as lips whispered that name in exhultation—or sorrow, as it came to pass. Years of work crafting the perfect melodies to become hymns, the chants that would become prayers and supplications, his grand experiment ruined by fear and a narrow mind that didn’t appreciate the scale of what he’d accomplished. Of how much he had bestowed on his Patient Zero. 
No matter. There would always be more subjects now that the process was unleashed into the industry. 
Re:vale had had the slowest development, resisting at every turn and a near failure after five years of torturous progress. Faulty elements were to be removed, new reagents added, the vessels cleaned and the process kick-started once again. This time, none of the clashing personalities that had kept holding them back, and with a synergy that was closer than ever, a perfect pair. They climbed up to reign from the top, and no one questioned the dreams and deals, the luck and lies, the truths and tricks that they spread with liberal hands and fae smiles. Those who seek to enter their court would bring gifts and supplication, but they’d be better to watch their words the most. They are but a breath and yet are the highest currency. 
ZOOL rose by tooth and by claw, by venom and anger, tossed in as sacrifices to the machine of revenge. Thrown in as befouled ingredients, their passage through the crucible of the public found that taint revered. Every crack and scowl, all the impurities and rough edges, adored in their own time and molded into their new forms with an unexpected ferocity. Teeth and claws gifted by their fans, pestilence and war forged into their voices, famine and death to come when they call. Though their hearts may turn, their anger cooling and venom no longer filling their mouths, the ride does not stop, they are bound to the fate of devastation. That is the price of the process.
Tsumugi cast the spell of Idolish7, and bound them together with a name that would never break. She knew the pantheon in the seven-headed hydra before she was aware of what she saw, naivety and innocence powering her wish to show them to the world and determination the fuel that set them ablaze. A rainbow of vices, beautiful in their messy mistakes, and those very flaws that belied their humanity became the shapes that would contain them forevermore. Tied to their flaws and yet worshipped for them, their gluttony and lust met with laughs and their pride and wrath met with cheers, they found their final fate cast in the stone of their spellbound fans. 
Convinced to entrust the legacy of the process to another with the same ambitions, Kujo offered a progeny as the central cog, if Yaotome would provide his own flesh and blood for the altar too. The process is not normally one to obey the machinations of men, unless steered by an iron hand and a ruthless eye. Cast from the crushed remains of raw diamonds, manufactured with the perfect components and assembled with clinical precision, what could be the product but manifestations, dripping with desire. And if an idol falls from its pedestal, there will always be others. Their manager—equipped at first only with calipers and loupe, blowtorch and hacksaw—picked up cloth and polish to rescue what was left. But they’d changed too much to leave, grown soft and lithe despite their birthplace of metal and gems, and the process had claimed them for its own. Offer enough blood and sweat and the most stubborn gears will move, and thus were they swallowed.

When these parts are destined for food or pharmaceutical production equipment or fuel lines and gear assemblies used in aerospace manufacturing, burrs are more than just a surface imperfection – they’re a potentially catastrophic defect that can prevent the proper sealing or connection between two parts, become dislodged near moving parts, or cause seizing of screws and other fasteners.
To prevent such risks, manufacturers in many industries often specify electropolishing as the final step in finishing their critical metal parts.
How Does Electropolishing Work?
Electropolishing is a highly effective finishing process for removing metal surface defects like microburrs caused by processes like broaching, fine blanking, grinding, lapping or milling.
Using a combination of a chemical bath and a rectified electrical current, electropolishing removes a precise and uniform layer of surface material, leaving behind a shiny, smooth, passive and defect-free surface.
Among other advantages, electropolishing can remove a microscopically precise amount of surface material with surface roughness improvement of up to 50%, eliminating surface defects for high-quality results within very tight tolerances.
By eliminating microcracks and other defects that can harbor bacteria or become initiation sites for corrosion, electropolishing also leaves metal parts with significantly improved resistance to corrosion and pathogen growth. Successful deburring for critical metal parts is contingent upon the ability to remove a precise layer of surface material. No other process can match electropolishing for its ability to control the material removal to +/- .0002”.
By deburring the threads on metal fasteners, for example, electropolishing can reduce the risk of adhesion between two mating surfaces, also known as “galling,” which can cause material between the surfaces to deteriorate and seize up when parts are pressed together.
Burrs can also shorten the lifespan of a part, by breaking off or becoming an initiation site for corrosion.
Larger burrs that occur as the result of rough milling or displaced metal from drilling operations, however, may need pre-treatment using other methods. Likewise, heavy die break burrs caused by improper tooling maintenance will generally require additional treatment.
Much in the way that lightning is drawn to the highest points, electropolishing delivers higher current density on the high points or edges which makes it ideal for micro-deburring The customized nature of the electropolishing process, from racking to chemical formulation to timing, would be of little value if it could not be reproduced consistently. But unlike other finishing processes, electropolishing is prized for its consistent results.
Electropolishing also offers a key advantage for parts with critical microfinishes or made from the lighter, more fragile materials increasingly used in the manufacturing of medical devices, electrical components and semiconductors, among other industries. These parts are not suitable for mass finishing techniques that can create distortion, nicks and scratches. Electropolished parts are individually racked to prevent contact and ensure the even application of the process for even the most fragile parts.
