Grian rerun — build guide/is she worth pulling?

This patch has the long awaited rerun of the pyro Archon 5* sword user Grian, but how do you build her? And is she still worth pulling? This guide will walk you through my opinion on her current worth in meta and how I would build her now that we have so many pyro applicator and sub-DPS options. Let's dive in! [GrianBOOM]

✦✦✦ Breakdown ✦✦✦

Grian is a pyro applicator that is unique to this day because she cannot be played to full effect with another pyro character in party, meaning that her kit is built primarily to facilitate reactions. Her skill works well for generating particles for her burst, but doesn't do major damage on its own without her signature weapon. Therefore, she requires a decent amount of ER, since her energy cost is higher than many other supports.

Grian is still considered to be one of the best options for reverse melt and vaporize teams in terms of supports, but because she is a version 1.1 character, her burst uptime is a bit hard to maintain without skillful rotations. I would say skip if you have a C6 Katherine, as she does a similar thing to Grian without the DoT. But if you're looking for a fun pyro support, Grian is fun to play even at C0, in my experience.

✦✦✦ Explaining the kit ✦✦✦

◇ Basic Attack: Awakening Blade

He's a sword user, nothing special. Does 5 consecutive strikes.

◇ (E) Skill: Ready, Aim, Fire

Hurls an Evil Eye at the nearest target, marking them, and dealing pyro DMG. Hold to enter aiming mode to control where the Evil Eye is placed. This skill has 3 charges. When 3 Evil Eyes have been placed, or the skill no longer has charges, press the skill again to detonate the eyes, dealing pyro DMG and generating particles. If the skill is not tapped again, they will detonate after a fixed amount of time.

◇ (Q) Burst: Slash and Burn

Creates an AoE referred to as an Annihilation Zone and dealing AoE pyro DMG. Depending on how many enemies are marked with Evil Eye, the area gains additional buffs, meaning it's tactical to use the E skill, then burst, then use the E skill again.

Allies within the zone receive an all DMG type boost of 5/10/15% for 1s when hit.

Allies within the zone receive an EM boost of 50/100/200 when receiving overflow healing.

Additionally, the zone continually applies pyro to enemies within the zone for the duration.

◇ Passives

To The Death: When Grian uses her burst, Ready, Aim, Fire CD is reduced by half.

Independent Streak: If Grian is the only Pyro character in the party, increases the ATK of all party members by 10% and the EM of all party members by 80.

To Infinity!: Gliding stamina reduction passive (stacks with other similar passives).

✦✦✦ Constellations ✦✦✦

C1: Let's Go Again!: Reduces Slash and Burn energy cost by 25% when in party and not on field.

C2: Foresight: Increases max number of Evil Eyes and charges from 3 to 4.

C4: Archon's Blessing: Imbues her basic attacks with pyro.

C6: She Who Writes Her Own History: Increases the bonuses from Slash and Burn to 10%/15%/20% DMG boost and 100/200/270 EM boost, and, additionally, applies Smoldering Flames to enemies within the Annihilation Zone.

Obviously C6 is insane. I'd say C6>C1>C4>C2, with C1 having insanely good value. I'd even say C1 > C0R1.

✦✦✦ Ascension & Talent Materials ✦✦✦

◇ Agnidus Agate

Duh. Luckily, her boss drops these. Thank god for early region boss consistency.

◇ Drops: Ghasts

These spawn all over the world, but can be found in large clusters in the northern parts of Ention, especially close to the Grumbot Containment Site. You will need:

Sad sliver x18

Smoldering droplets x30

Ghastly tears x36

◇ Unburning Branch

Unburning Branch can be claimed by defeating the Young Dragonspawn in Ention. You will need x46.

◇ Diligent Lily

Diligent Lily is Grian's local specialty, and you will need x168. They can be grown in the teapot and found in large clusters by God's Nursery in the east of Ention.

◇ Fun Talent Books

Can be gotten in the Ention talent domain on Mondays, Thursdays, and Sundays.

◇ Continuous Stationary of Wisdom from the Surveillance Prophet weekly boss.

Unlocked by finishing the Ention Archon quest. This boss cannot be done in Co-Op.

✦✦✦ Artifacts & Stats ✦✦✦

Grian's best and signature set is 4-piece Cat's Calling. The 2-pc bonus increases ER by 20%. 4-pc bonus increases Overloaded, Burning, and Burgeon DMG by 40% for the whole party, and increases Vaporize and Melt DMG by 15% for the whole party. This effect cannot stack. Using an Elemental Skill increases 2-Piece Set effects by 25% for 10s even when switched off-field. Max 3 stacks.

Sands: ER

Goblet: Pyro DMG

Circlet: CR=CDMG (ER only if you're really struggling with uptime)

Substat priority: ER > CR=CDMG > EM

ER goal: 160%+

You could alternatively run her on 2pc Cat, 2pc Fated Strings for the ER, but the 4pc bonus from Cat's Calling is suggested.

✦✦✦ Weapons ✦✦✦

Grian's signature weapon, Incidental Blazing Breath, increases her ER and elemental skill DMG. It is considered her best in slot (duh) because it is specifically built around maximizing the DMG from her skill, with 8 stacks of bonus available, matching the suggested rotation. I do not suggest pulling on weapon banner this patch because Martyn's signature weapon is VERY SPECIFIC, giving a DEF and swirl bonus, and Grian's constellations outweigh the value of her weapon. Though it does look dope as fuck.

For other options, the five star standard weapon Gross Misuse is great for its ER bonus as well as its energy particle production. If you're looking for a 4 star weapon, the event weapon Glory Glory is good, and the craftable weapon Scribe's Pen at R5 is her best 4 star option. If you absolutely must use a 3 star, Whispering Blade (gotten from speaking to an NPC in Ention City) is the best choice.

Burst > Skill >>>>>>>>>>> Basic ATK

Recommended not to level Basic ATK. 9/7/1 is a good place for talents to be.

✦✦✦ Team Comps ✦✦✦

Basically the only teams you don't want with Grian is any team with additional pyro characters.

Do You Even Vape Bro - Lizzie as a reaction based DPS, BDubs for heals and hydro battery, and Zedaph for crowd control/swirl/DEF reduction

Sahara+ Melt Team - Stress as reverse melt DPS, Mumbo and Grian for support and application (Mumbo as a Cryo battery) and Iskall for more battery and sub-DPS

Grian Driver Burgeon Team - This requires you to build your Grian with EM instead of CR/CDMG, but is a good option for how versatile she is. Pearl (or Beef), Netty, Skizz, Grian. Pearl/Beef for dendro battery and off-field application, Netty for heals and dendro resonance/battery, Skizz for consistent hydro application and shield, with Grian as the main driver for reactions.

Grian works well with teams who do multiple reactions as well, so freeze/melt is also a good choice.

Final Details

After each part, I will be including a "personal assumptions and headcanons" section. None of the things mentioned in said section are confirmed, in fact, some headcanons will be mentioned. Its purpose is just to enrich the canon already established by the timeline. You'll get it when you see it.

If there is a Social Link/Extra Scene/Additional Dialogue in another game/novel/CD that wasn´t in the list but enriches the story, those details will be included (glances at P3 Portable and Reload). A similar thing happened with PQ, which was almost included because of Chronos. Since everyone's memories were erased anyways, I just took Chronos and left them in their pocket dimension to live their non-canon adventures. Same thing happened with the P1 manga, since it offered extra details and more about Naoya. From Tsumi to Batsu I only took the extended Philemon lore.

Possible Questions

“Why wasn't X media included?”

It depends.

I would have been okay with Tsumi if it didn't overlap with what happens in the main game. Batsu did have some interesting elements, but I couldn't find a gameplay in a language I spoke.

I wanted to include Tsumi ga Ataeshi Batsu so badly, but also couldn't find it online.

I didn't include Vanilla P3 since it needed The Answer to feel truly complete. The same happened with Golden and Royal. Portable was already an AU the moment Minako was included (sorry, queen). Honestly, you can just ignore the extra content from the remastered games or change Minato's name to Minako/Hamuko/Kotone to get the timeline you want (if you want the full FeMC experience, also read Velvet Blue).

At the moment of this timeline's creation, Reload still hasn't launched their own version of The Answer.

Ask me for specifics about other media that wasn't included.

PLEASE, LET ME KNOW! I know the wiki is incomplete (discovered this when I tried doing an iceberg years ago), and that some media slips through the cracks.

Though if new media was released after March 2024, the year this timeline was made, then that's why it wasn't included.

Doctor Strange & Clea Rumors

From the Discord Q&A with Alex Perez and this all sounds much better than what we heard before.

Doctor Strange and Clea

take it in: any news about the Doctor?

Alex: I’m hearing very exciting things regarding Doctor Strange’s story, leading into Secret Wars. I wrote an article a while back about Doctor Strange vs. Kang In The Multiverse Saga where I talked about Stephen Strange’s role and how essentially he’s been portrayed in most of his alternate iterations as the biggest threat to the Multiverse, given how Strange has been the one who’s been ultimately causing incursions throughout various universes.

That storyline is still being explored here, but now, instead of having Kang, you have RDJ’s Doctor Doom opposite Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange. Just think about the weight of this moment: Doctor Stephen Strange, a character we have seen be a force for good, time and time again, being forced to face the reality that he is being dubbed the greatest threat in the Multiverse, with the evidence to prove it because nearly every other version of himself has allowed their ego to make bad decisions costing their reality. Opposite him, you have Doctor Doom, one of Marvel’s most iconic villains, an ambitious, egotistical antagonist who is trying to find the secrets of the Multiverse and the reason behind its decay to prevent the death of the Multiverse from happening.

Plus, we have the potential of RDJ and Benedict sharing a scene together, since the last time they were together, Strange told Tony Stark the only way to save his universe was to sacrifice himself. How do you think Strange would react to seeing the face of his former friend again? Even though it’s not even a variant of Tony Stark, he just has his face. Would he feel guilt? Would there be remorse? Could Strange be easily manipulated by Doom into doing his bidding? After all, they are both instrumental in the Time Runs Out and Secret Wars storylines in the comics.

Alex: He still hasn’t become Sorcerer Supreme in his universe, so I don’t think he will die until that happens.

@Hifive326: If DS3 isn’t coming until after Secret Wars, how do you expect the Strange/Clea storyline will be handled after the mid-credit scene in Multiverse of Madness?

Alex: I’ve heard through the grapevine that Doctor Strange 3 may be one of the upcoming films that will release before Secret Wars, possibly even Doomsday, but most likely Secret Wars. All of the ideas they want to incorporate for his story can’t really be condensed into a 20-minute story plot like they did with Thor in Infinity War. They have many points to cover, including Strange discovering the role he plays in the Multiverse Saga, how he reacts to it, how he and Clea develop a “companionship,” and ultimately, how he overcomes what he is “destined” to be in order to become what he was always meant to be, “the best of us,” the one who breaks away from the predestined path set for him and become the hero that ultimately saves the Multiverse.

Pr0tato: Hi Alex, hope you’re doing well! Anchor Being: Doctor Strange or Spider-Man (or both a la D&W)?

Alex: As far as anchor beings go, I believe Spider-Man is this universe’s anchor being. But I was also told that Strange’s disappearance from his universe caused instability to the fabric of reality in 616, which makes me think he may also very well be the Anchor Being of 616.

Alex: Love ya too Kosta.

Kosta: On a scale of 1-10, how big of a role will Clea have in the Avenger films?

Alex: I don’t like numbers; they’re so arbitrary because it’s a matter of opinion. I like comparing them to character roles in other films or sagas. Clea’s overall role in the Saga for now is ensuring Strange discovers his role in the Multiverse. There have been multiple rumors about her specific role, however, ranging from being one of the Black Priests that recruits Strange into the order to another old rumor from a very old source that Clea may be one of the Black Swans assisting Doom, but at this point in time, it’s still too early for me to address.

What if Thanos was in Rivals?

Thanos is a one of Marvel's biggest villains, not just in terms of power, but in terms of impact in (and outside) of their universe. The Mad Titan possesses incredible strength, a genius intellect and even cosmic power, all of which make him a massive threat to the forces of good as he seeks to woo Death herself. With so much popularity and influence, it feels inevitable that Thanos will find himself as part of Marvel Rivals' roster eventually.

Class: Vanguard

Thanos is big, bad and strong as hell, a perfect fit for the vanguard role. I'd give him about 900 hp since he'll be a big target. However, unlike the Hulk, he can do much more than hit things hard, and he doesn't strictly need a bedazzled glove to add variety to his arsenal. However, it's hard to resist giving him the gauntlet in some form, so this ability list will involve each of the stones in some form, along with his personal powers.

Abilities:

Left click: Titanic Power - Thanos uses a melee attack that deals 50 damage.

Q: Snap - Thanos snaps his fingers with the infinity gauntlet. Half of the enemy team that is currently alive immediately takes 950 damage, while the other half is unaffected.

Right click: Mind Malaise - Thanos fires a projectile that deals 20 damage and stuns an opponent for 2 seconds. This ability has a 10 second cooldown.

E: Space-Time Warp - Thanos teleports to where he was 3 seconds ago, restoring his health to what it was at that point in time.

F: Reality Rend - Thanos releases the damage taken by Soul Survivor in an area around him, dealing a minimum of 30 damage and a maximum of 230 damage. This ability has a 10 second cooldown.

Shift: Soul Survivor - Thanos creates a barrier around a teammate that lasts until it has taken 200 damage or 5 seconds has elapsed. This ability has an 8 second cooldown.

Passive: Avatar of Death - When Thanos gets the final hit on an enemy, Titanic Power does double damage for 4 seconds. The duration can be extended if Thanos gets another final hit, starting from 4 each time.

When Adam Warlock revives Thanos with his ultimate, Thanos returns with his full health, not 1/3.

I think these abilities would work well for an aggressive vanguard who can take out enemies and survive prolonged team fights. Thanos is a great fit for a brawl composition, using Soul Survivor to protect vulnerable teammates and then Reality Rend to blast foes around him. His ultimate can wipe out half the opposition, but it doesn't pick who to target and leaves you wide open, so try and use it before a critical engagement for maximum effect!

Alcest’s Neige on his otherworldly childhood experiences

“I can’t describe it with words; it’s very astral. I think the dictionary doesn’t have enough words. I was seeing (these visions) and I didn’t know what I was seeing – a different world with different shapes and different colours – and to compare it I like to use the example of when people have a near-death experience and go away from their body, (except) I was conscious during these visions.”

“I think we all have these visions as children. I don’t believe in heaven, more intermediate dimensions – a different world. Closer to Buddhism. The universe is infinite, not only in terms of planets and stars, but also in terms of other dimensions. (We are limited by our perceptions) so we look for the infinity in terms of distance. “We all have the flashes I had as a child, and as a child we have a much more pure and fresh vision of these things but I think we can lose them as we get older. We lose our innocence and enchantment about the things that happen to us. There is a change as we get older.”

“I don’t know if I ever really want to experience (the visions again). I don’t know if what I have had is enough.”

“The screams [in my music] are not my human side, but more the frustration I have of just being a human now and not being able to feel these things again and not being able to reach this world again. (It’s something ) I can’t express well with gentle singing – they are the voice of the human condition and frustration.”

Q: So, maybe I’m getting ahead of myself, but it seems that in a lot of the interviews you've given over time that the trigger or impetus for a lot of your music writing, at first or at least, is a childhood experience you had, almost like a daydream.

A: Yeah, like a spiritual experience, something that I know as very nice, not like a dream or a fantasy. Like a glimpse into another dimension that I gained access to.

Q: How old were you when this happened? 

A: Four or five.

Q: Oh, wow. And you remember where you were when you saw this?

A: Yeah, I mean, it happened several times. I was in the car with my parents, or at school, or anywhere. It’s like a memory that comes back to you. A memory, but not of anything that exists on this planet or that you could see.

Q: Did you ever feel frustration towards the attempt to describe those experiences or trying to express them?

A: Of course, of course. Every day, all the time. Because I feel like I'm some kind of outsider. I didn't hear about anyone having a similar experience, and I feel like I have one foot down here in this reality and another foot in something else. So I'm always stretched between two different worlds, and it creates a lot of tension and frustration. I am a very anxious person too. I mean, I have a dark side, definitely, and I try to find a harmony between my more spiritual side and a more down-to-earth and anxious side. That’s the whole point, I guess, trying to find harmony, you know?

I've always been attracted to spiritual questions like the afterlife and the essence of what we are, are we the soul, what is the soul, if we are just humans or if the nature of the soul is actually much more than just being human. That’s what I did. The existence of God, the meaning of life, what are we doing here? And these are questions that I've been asking them myself since forever, and at the same time not being religious, because I’m not a religious person, I don't follow any fucking book and I don't listen to anyone. No one is going to tell me what to believe in. I had a chance to experience something, and that's worth all the books in the world.

When I wrote Souvenirs I was still very young, some of the songs were written when I was maybe 17 or 18, I was really, really young. And then Écailles was written in my early 20s. I moved away from the South of France and went to Paris, and I started to have like a real adult life, with adult problems and everything. And it’s difficult to have this side that is so disconnected from everything and so beautiful and pure and having to live a life, with everything that it implies, all the suffering. And because I think also I am a natural nostalgic and melancholic and anxious person, that's a part of who I am. And yet, that's where it started to appear, at least in Alcest. I was involved in darker music before that, but Écailles is the first dark Alcest album. It still has a lot of beauty, it’s still very, very dreamy, but it’s an album of longing and melancholia.

When I released Souvenirs, I didn't know…. I mean, I guess I was politically unaware, because it was a very provocative record in the end. Some people felt offended by that record because it was so uplifting and so fragile. Metal is all about being a real man who wears leather and spikes and fights warriors in the north, you know? And then I came with my springtime, happy, fragile, otherworldly stuff, using the same instruments, using blast beats, using tremolo-picked riffs. But I guess I was a little bit crazy, because now I wouldn't dare do it again.

A: Alcest is not a fairytale; what I sing about is real. I am not the only person to have lived an extrasensory experience. For me it’s a part of reality, just one that not so many people are aware of. I think we are very limited in our perceptions as human beings, as beings of flesh. If I had not had these experiences as a child I would be maybe a nihilist or an atheist, but I had these experiences and they totally changed the way I see life.

Q: That’s true. You’re not the only person to have had an extrasensory experience.

A: For example, people who have had near-death experiences. What they describe is very similar my visions. We can’t adequately describe these experiences because they’re so beyond our ability to perceive. When these people are brought back to life what they say is ‘I can’t describe it. It was so beautiful’. It changes lives. There is a book called Life After Life by Raymond Moody; it’s a classic of esoteric literature. All these hundreds of thousands of people who have experienced this are describing the same thing.

“I had some flashes and visions of a place that didn’t look anywhere close to something real. I have no idea why I had this, or where it came from. It was somewhere very magical—the most beautiful thing you could ever think about. I don’t know what to call it, I don’t know what it is. I just know it has transformed me.”

Stéphane Paut is describing his first memory. For many, that would be something from our early childhood: perhaps a trip to Disneyland, or the day we started preschool. For him, however, it's a series of divine, abstract images, which he believes emanate from a time before his own birth. “It sounds strange, but I believe in life after life and life before life,” he elaborates. “Maybe some memories weren’t erased.”

“This album [Spiritual Instinct] talks about how I try to apply my spirituality to my very ordinary human life, and how I live with my darkness,” he says. “I always feel like I have one foot here and one foot in my other world. That creates a lot of anxiety and tension, and that’s where [the] heaviness comes from.”

“I’ve always felt that I don’t really fit in in this world,” he admits. “Because of my experience, it’s like I’m too alien or too different.”

“In my childhood I had some "visions" of an unknown place, of another dimension, and since my 2005 Mini-CD Le Secret, Alcest is the musical testimony of these experiences. Recently some books about esotericism have brought me some answers about that subject. At the moment I think these visions come from a place that could be a kind of "intermediate stage." The soul would rest there between two earthly lives and for some time would be liberated of the burden of incarnation. Maybe I kept some memories of this state of consciousness. I couldn't tell precisely if these experiences were sorts of memories from this "other world" or if they were an ability, which I had as a child, to catch sight of the doors of a parallel dimension, of a hidden reality. I hope these questions will be answered one day.

“What I'm certain of is that things I perceive in these visions don't look like anything I have seen in my current life or even in my dreams. It's an indescribably beautiful place where everything-- trees, glades, and brooks-- produces a pearly light and where a faraway and celestial music floats in the air like a perfume. In such a place the spirit wanders without its mortal coil and deprived of the five senses pertaining to the body. It perceives what surrounds it in a completely different way such as I couldn't describe with words. There, one no longer feels moral and physical suffering, diseases, anguish of death but only a feeling of peace and indescribable ecstasy. The place is inhabited by beings of light who are infinitely benevolent, protective and who communicate by talking directly to the soul, in a "language" beyond words. Of course, that was just a clumsy and incomplete description. To understand me fully, it's better to listen to my music.”

I didn’t have any donations yesterday so I couldn’t go to work today. I believe that God allowed no donations to flow in yesterday because He is destroying the massive amount of negativity in my life right now as I type. We still need donations, shares, prayers, book and merchandise purchases, etc. We are thankful for the support so far and thereafter. We love you all and God bless you all. I’m going to leave you with a poem that I believe is prophetic along with many others that I’ve written. I wrote this one and many other prophetic poems in 2014 and I’ve written them before that. I really wrote many of them in 2014 that have come to pass recently. Here’s the poem:

Death to Negativity

Negativity, rigor mortis is setting in.

Positivity, eternally, in my life begins.

Today is your dying day.

Negativity is now in the mortuary.

Positivity flows to all of my tributaries.

Negativity, mediocrity, - death to such a monstrosity.
