I’m yelling into the void a bit more about Don’t Starve, don’t mind me. Specifically about Wilson, his medical know-how, his weird relationship with death, and the origin of his Forbidden Knowledge.
Let’s start with the easy one, Wilson being medically trained.
To start, Wilson’s quote for the Peg Leg.
Tumblr media
Then in the Forge, Wilson’s special ability is to revive his teammates twice as fast with more health.
Wilson’s Victorian Skin is an old-timey doctor, even mentioning the four humors (even if that practice was far outdated by the Victorian Era).
I remember once seeing a quote about Wilson getting kicked out of a school for setting something on fire, but take that with a grain of salt because I am struggling to find it.
Now onto Wilson’s weirdness with death of his fellow man.
It’s clear the Constant has left him quite jaded with death as a concept, which is very fair.
But you cannot tell me that a man with a normal view of death would find a skeleton under the floorboards of his new house and just…put the boards back. Or hell, that skeleton is very likely to be the one we see strung up in Wilson’s lab in the very first short!
There’s also Wilson’s quote for Skeletons from Don’t Starve classic:
Tumblr media
As well as his disregard for the sanctity of graves.
Tumblr media
So yeah. He isn’t normal about human death, just like how he isn’t exactly normal about science.
Wilson is confirmed to be the creator of several items that everyone is able to craft and use.
Obviously the Meat Effigy, but it doesn’t stop there.
Maxwell isn’t particularly enthused about the Think Tank:
Tumblr media
The Fire Pump is bemoaned to be his:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Booster Shot is another item he’s very likely to have made, seeing as he’s the only one truly enthusiastic about it. Further connects him to his medical know-how, as well.
From the Survival Tips, Wilson is also very likely to be the one to have made the first Telltale Heart.
Revive: “We nearly lost one of our numbers today. In a mad daze I created…something…that managed to pull our friend back to the land of the living, but…whatever it was, I fear I cannot rightfully say it was within the realm of science…” -W
Gardeneer: “I’ve finally perfected my design for an ingenious (if I do say so myself) device that stores important garden-based knowledge. Certain naysayers might point out that it looks like nothing more than an overturned flowerpot worn on the head…some people simply don’t have an eye for science.” -W
The tips are (almost) all signed with a W, but it’s clear who wrote these ones, especially since Wilson wore the Gardeneer hat during the Reap What You Sow trailer.
That hat leads me to my next point. It is something that Wilson made, he invented it.
Then tell me why you are able to upgrade it at the Ancient Pseudoscience Station, when literally everything else you can do at it is craft fully ancient artifacts?
And doesn’t the storage of knowledge sound eerily familiar? Such as…
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Whatever depths Maxwell snagged Wilson’s Forbidden Knowledge from, it definitively has origins with the Ancients.
Which…
Tumblr media
…is quite concerning.

At cane’s length
this song owns my heart, and i’ve been thinking about writing something with soft dom vibes for a while sooo. here you go.
cw: viktor x reader, smut, viktor is an unbearable tease, gn reader, gn pronouns for reader
word count: 2k~
Tumblr media
art cr: @arcanescribbles. my inspiration for this fic, actually.
*standard ‘eng is not my first language so please don’t be mean to me’ bullshit i put before posting every single one of my fics*
reblogs and comments are highly appreciated <3
Viktor is handsome in a cruel way. In an untouchable, ‘tease all the remaining sanity of you’ one, to be precise.
Cruel.
That short, plain word spins on your tongue, threatening to roll off it any second. You audibly gulp, desperately trying to swallow the harsh adjective, and the longing flows down your throat, leaving you breathless — almost too turned on to think straight whatsoever.
You can’t call him that. Even though he’s not exactly opposed to the idea of being relentlessly cussed out by you. It’s the consequences of your boldness that attract him: after all, he gets to watch you all tied up and needy, doe-eyed as you desperately ask to be touched… And then wide-eyed as you switch to being utterly unfiltered and vulgar, trying anything and everything to make him fuck you tonight. Spending the whatever’s left of your wits on those incoherent mumble-like sentences, pleading mewls mixed with the sounds of your knees scraping on the floor from all the squirming you do. Completely and utterly adorable in this state of raw desire, and it figuratively makes your brain slip out of your ear, replaces it with debauched thoughts, with inability to feel anything except for the lust — so intense, that it’s almost painful.
The ingenious, irritatingly smug man or, as you so kindly dubbed him, ‘kinky bastard’ is seated above you, the corners of his mouth curled into a wicked smile, legs spread in this tauntingly inviting manner — testing your limits, mocking you deliberately. He knows that you crave to be between those legs, struggling to fit the aching swell of his cock into your mouth, to let it stretch your slick, heavenly warm throat — or even to be split in twain, fucked over his desk like the horny mess you are — desperate, sobbing, charming in the tantrums you throw just for him, begging to be taken care of. Well, not only begging, to be frank. It’s a full-fledged demanding now, which, decidedly, did flatter Viktor, but being a brat never works on him. You have to be good to obtain his mercy. Negotiating, perhaps. Even when your sanity is gone, even when the only thing you can think of is choking on his dick. Those are the unspoken rules of earning Viktor’s touch — the sweet in its unattainability treasure. And you’ve learned it the hard way.
Viktor thinks it’s only fair, since he can’t be rough with you physically. His body might be sore, but his mind? God, you wish it was sore at least once in a while. Yes, he might not be able to frantically pound you into the mattress, but he’s perfectly capable of coming up with new ways to edge you. Which you loved, of course, but fuck would you prefer the first option so much more. But he’s an incorrigible inventor to the bone. Even in the sheets. Well, more precisely, now — in his lab.
The ropes on your wrists are rubbing the skin, keeping your hands tied reliably behind your back. They serve as one of the numerous reminders of this embarrassingly unfair position Viktor had put you in: you can’t move unless he’s kind enough to let you — he’s not restricted in his movements at all, you’re kneeling in front of him with a vulnerable expression — he’s leaning in his chair with a shit-eating grin, legs spread, head thrown back as he looks down at you in a way a master looks at his servant. You’re fully naked — he’s fully clothed. Viktor calls it ‘the perfect balance’. You call it ‘please, just take that damn thing off’. The idyll.
“Viktor, why are you doing this to me?” you mutter, glancing at him with a weak sigh. He quirks an eyebrow, unbothered, divine-looking with those rays of sunlight peeking through his dark hair, forming a figurative nimbus. ‘Like a god,’ you think, and for the briefest of moments your gaze changes from desperate to enamoured. But then you remember that your god refuses to be worshipped. That he would rather watch you suffer, disregarding your every prayer. And so you frown again.
“Funny, you should ask,” he purrs, the thickness of his accent matching the thickness of sexual tension between you. “As far as I’m concerned, you’re supposed to keep your enemies at arm’s length.“
You scoff, ignoring the painful tingling in your knees, the once cold floor beneath you warm and sticky in the places your hot skin touched it.
“I’m no enemy of yours,” you mutter, sounding almost genuinely offended. But Viktor only laughs, mouth open in a silent, amused ‘oh?’. Your only response is a frustrated moan.
“I wouldn’t be so sure about that, dear,” he demonstratively clutches his cane, the sexy bend of his long fingers so tempting it nearly has you cumming on the floor. “Didn’t you mention hating me earlier?”
Of course you did. How couldn’t you, when you wanted so badly to open wide for him, to bite on the calloused thumb, the undefinable salty, with a mixture of something metallic taste of his skin so familiar you could easily make it out. Oh, and with accuracy sharp enough for its savour to become a phantom sensation on the tip of your tongue. However, the same tactic never worked for his cock. Whenever you tried to imagine him abruptly pushing it inside of you — the craving would just become stronger, more unbearable. Fantasies were never enough. You needed the real thing.
“Not that I care what label you’ve decided to put on me tonight,” he continues, obviously hinting at the ‘kinky bastard’ incident. “A lover or an enemy — you’re staying at arm’s length.”
“More like at cane’s length,” you mock, angry eyes swirling that white tie oh his slender neck, but the rope around your wrists stops you from tugging on it to angrily steal a kiss.
“Cane’s length?” curious, Viktor leans over you in his chair, and for a second you’re deceived, rejoicing at the proximity, but he’s quick to remind you what a fool you are, his unhinged expression turning into an entertained one. “You have quite the brilliant mind, darling. We should probably test that out.”
Your teeth instantly sink into your tongue, instinctively scolding yourself for the inability to watch your mouth. Why, just why would you say that?
“Test that out?” you mumble, as your gaze drops to his shoes, unable to handle the intensity of his amber eyes lancing through your face.
“Exactly,” Viktor confirms, slyly biting his lower lip. “You see,” he utters, as his crutch loudly taps on the floor, causing you to shudder, “I don’t think the distance between us is equal to the length of my cane.”
“You can’t be serious,” you snapped at him, sobbing frustratingly. “Viktor, it was just a metaphor.”
“I’m a scientist, my dear. I don’t do metaphors. I do calculations and proven facts,” he utters, placing the crutch into his lap, and you find yourself shamefully jealous of that stupid stick, wishing terribly it was you resting there instead of it.
Viktor gives the cane an evaluating gaze, as if trying to measure it with his eyes, cruel grin never leaving that sharp, currently reachless for you face.
“So, supposedly,” he clears his throat, hoarse voice unbearably seductive as he pensively looks you up and down, taking in the debauched arch of your back, the redness on your aching knees. “I believe that my cane is around… say, thirty five inches long. And you, my dear,” he grabs the cane by its handle again, pointing at your face, left eye closed as if he’s trying to measure something again, torturing you shamelessly, “are still too close.”
The annoyance is impossible to hold in anymore. It’s a pure torment — incredibly hot in a certain perverted way, if you were to be frank, but god did you hate him with every fibre of your being right now, dreaming of fucking this mocking sass out of him, of teaching him a lesson. Viktor deserved to be ruined purely for the way he keeps those skilled hands to himself right now, denying you the oh so craved pleasure.
“Well, I don’t think I’m close enough to you” a protest escapes your pouted lips, but it appeared to have fallen on deaf ears, just like all of your previous, hopelessly useless pleas.
“Eh, debatable,” he utters casually, driving you even more mad with a playful shake of that insufferably smart head. You bite back an angry ‘tsk’, followed by a pissed-off roll of the furious eyes. Viktor is quick to notice the bratty demeanour.
He’s smooth in his roughness. In testing your patience with the insatiability of his own. Something cold quickly brushes your chin, forcibly tilting your head up again, and you huff at the audacity, eyes snapping open as you realise that he’s coaxing you to look him in the eye with his fucking cane.
“The fuck?” you hiss at the cocky jerk, but the way he holds that crutch to your face disarms you, adds even more arousal to the mixture of intense feelings building up inside of you.
“Language, my dear,” he purrs, eyes sparkling with malicious pride, “we‘re in a respectable place.“
He bares the upper row of his teeth, smiling at his own witty remark, and you can swear to god that never in your life have you wanted to wipe a grin off somebody’s face so badly. With a kiss, preferably. But a fist would work just perfectly fine too.
“Oh please,” you hitch in breath when the same hard edge of the cane slips off your chin to fleetingly press into your neck, but something about the uncertainty of Viktor’s movements tells you that he’s not done with you yet, that there’s more ‘foreplay’ to come. “Your lab is not a church.”
“Oh yeah? Why are you kneeling then?” he teases, poking you with that sharp sarcasm. As if a goddamn crutch against your throat is not humiliating enough already.
“I want to slap you.”
Viktor hums, and the tortuous cane traces the curve of your shoulder, causing your breath to hitch in anticipation, the contrast of the cool material with your hot skin stealing a dreamy gasp from you.
“Slap me?” he murmurs, enjoying the way you suffer for him. Because of him. “Well, too bad I’m that good at tying knots.”
“You’re an awful person.”
“Oh, don’t flatter me like that.”
“No, seriously, why don’t you just allow me to make you feel good?” you practically cry out, arching your hips in a desperate attempt to get closer to him. But the cane is still there, gently dipped into your collarbone to keep you in place.
“You’re already making me feel good,” he whispers, pushing you away, and all you can do is groan, squirming like you’re facing grim death. But considering the current intensity of your overstimulation, that death might actually turn into quite the real one. In the guise of this devilishly handsome tease, which would make it the worst and the best way to go at the same time.
“But I can make you feel even better,” you beg, half-lidded, exhausted and so beautiful in this perverted state of such earnest vulnerability. Just precious. Sacred even, if the situation wasn’t so sinful. “Viktor, please. Aren’t you done torturing me? I could do so much better than just grovel here.”
“Perhaps,” he presumes, but you know him and his undying love for the eye-fucking too well. Hell, he might just adore this humbling staring even more than having actual sex with you. “But I would rather enjoy the exhibition for a little longer.”
You roll your eyes again. A rather dangerous choice of a reaction, because the crutch in his hand abruptly taps on your shoulder, drawing your attention back to his glistening eyes.
“Roll your eyes at me again and I’ll make it two cane’s length,” he threatens, and you bite your lip to suppress a pitiful moan so hard, that your teeth leave two crimson marks on it’s tender flesh.
And that sexy, secretly favourite torture of yours starts all over again.

Pairing: Hange Zoë x female reader Summary: Two scientists found company with each other through their same twisted minds. Word count: 1.5k A/N: Scientist Hange is my fav genre
The research laboratory holds a wholesome, commonplace landscape. A scenery one either wishes to escape from or spend a worthless eternity into. The enormous twisted trees and primeval architecture only gave it a sense of bleak, outworn fashion. A place outclassed by its time. It held the most average people who are contented with their lives and the science they know. It made Y/N wonder what put the ingenious Hange Zoë in such a place.
Perhaps it was the strangeness of the place itself that drove their curious mind to wander there. Y/N watched in silent amazement as this new researcher came into the lab. It was a rather unusual sight to see one who was fairly young and determined to go into such a dreary place to continue their research.
Hange's biological experiments was then supported by what fund the research lab had since Hange proposed inventive and novel ideas the organization cannot refuse to let down. Y/N did her best to admire such a fascinating person up close, seeing Hange enlivened the potential she once lost upon entering the university: her insatiable, curious mind absorbed by ideas far more complex than her pragmatic nature could bear. Y/N found a similarity between her and Hange, one not familiar enough to end up tasteless nor too complex to apprehend. Both have a prized goal, and both cannot handle being suppressed. It might be disastrous that they finally have each other.
"Hey, Hange, come over here," Y/N muttered, thumbing through the papers containing the experiment results. Hange comes over and leans over her shoulder to see what part of the document she's pointing at.
"Look at the succeeding results from the fourth and fifth trials. It's growing more effective because of the solution."
Hange smirked, thumbing through the rest of the paper. "What can I say, the modifications you've made certainly improved the study," Hange's eager eyes met hers. "I couldn't believe I could meet someone as invested in this as you are."
Hange went on about their experience with the study, about having various contradicting resources that made them rely more on the theory and evidence they had at hand. They would smile thinking about the lab partners who got scared listening to their findings.
Hange leaned on the counter, "It's fascinating how your knowledge perfectly supplied mine. Like a missing-half metaphor…"
Y/N would only smile and attribute their connection to the niche interests that mainly held them close.
Hange closed the distance between them as they place a hand over hers. Y/N could feel the feverish excitement within their fingertips.
"I have something to show you tomorrow," Hange whispered. "It's a surprise. Just for you."
Y/N spent the night thinking what the surprise would be, what would be something so important that it had to be put off tomorrow. She smiled at the possibilities of what sort of creation Hange conceived in their mind. Y/N could not help the affection bubbling inside their chest. It was as though an intoxicating sense of purpose overcame her body and warmed her in and out. A strong admiration clawing inside; a creature begging to be let out into the world. Their love erases the doom, overcast skies of who she used to be. The research lab ceased to become a bleak place but became one that held someone like Hange, one whose presence commanded her to live again.
However, the morning greeted her with a louring sky, one threatening to weep a storm. The dim lights, the faint swaying trees, the muffled chatters: all wandered in her mind once again, replacing the excitement from last night. It went on and on like a sinister videotape--a bad omen.
She found Hange sitting alone beside the window in the lab with the lights turned off. It is unusual for them to sit in the dark like this, knowing that they always open all the lights, saying things like their vision will worsen if they work in a dim environment. Y/N approached them, getting closer until her hands were on either side of their shoulder. Hange's familiarity with her only showed as they laced their fingers around hers in response.
"You must be thinking about my surprise for you," Hange said and gave her a sad smile. "I'm sorry, princess, I think my surprise for you would be a tad bit delayed. I'm…well, I'm banned from the main laboratory for the time being."
Y/N shook her head lightly and laughed, "What is it this time?"
Hange, despite being prized by the research lab still receives a reprimand from the higher-ups when they break lab rules or operate something new without authorization.
Hange was silent for a moment. "I was hoping to test our solution on a human test subject."
Y/N was taken aback but not surprised to hear Hange's request. She knew this day would come, it's an inevitable fate among ambitious scientists like they are: to do something amoral for their experiments.
"I assume you did not tell them about the details of our experiments," Y/N wants to assure.
"No," Hange shook their head. "If they knew about what we're doing, suspicion would not slide off from us that easily." They paused for a moment and laughed, "Haha, we're keeping it a secret as though we're forbidden lovers or something."
Y/N could see the smile on Hange's face but she noticed the transitory gloom that passed over their eyes. Those desperate, fiery eyes were caught by conflict due to their current situation.
"It was supposed to be a surprise, you know." Their eyes are looking afar, over the gnarled trees and overgrown lawn. Just beyond the window was the outside world overcast with gloomy clouds. Aside from that, there is nothing much to see. It was a depressing view indeed. But Hange's mind was too caught up with ideas to think about such. "I know you don't appreciate surprises very much but that's only because people who have tried to surprise you have only come up with lame ideas. If I restore a dying person's life in front of you, I think you would be pretty amused." They winked.
"Well, I'd say you're right," she gave Hange a small smile.
"Remember when we first talked about this experiment?" Hange asked.
"Yes, because we talked all night and didn't get any sleep."
Hange laughed, "That's right,"
"You told me about the possibility of your solution not only to extend life but fully restore it," Y/N continued, the memory playing vividly in her head. "It was a risky experiment since it can only be conducted in dying specimens."
"Yes, that's it," Hange responded. "The higher-ups don't know the full details of the experiment, but they cannot risk letting me experiment on a dying patient. I understood, but I thought I could have persuaded them. My charm did not work this time. Sorry."
Y/N knew that despite Hange's composed demeanor, they were upset about running out of plans on how to conduct the latest experiment. They were preparing this as a surprise for Y/N, after all. Y/N could not help but notice Hange's gadabout and fierce nature dim as though a bright light that was stolen too early. There must be a way, Hange thinks as they sit together in silence.
Y/N, on the other hand, still lingers on the fascination she has for Hange. On how she was immediately swept when Hange told her their cause for pursuing such a pioneering invention. "Life and death will cease to be profound once defied. It will simplify things and eliminate all of humanity's existential dread and powerlessness." Y/N remembered Hange's hopeful smile and determined eyes as they said this. She could not let such determination dissipate just because of scientific boundaries or moral views.
Y/N leaned down and wrapped an arm around Hange before whispering, "I could bring you a human specimen tomorrow."
This bold statement astonished Hange, they furrowed their eyebrows in confusion, doubting the reality behind Y/N's words.
"You heard me, Hange," Y/N continued. "I will bring you a dying person tomorrow, and do what you will. I'll observe and take notes. We will do it in the makeshift lab in my basement. It hasn't been used for a long time but the space and materials are sufficient."
Hange's eyes grew wide in amazement, "You have an underground lab?"
As Y/N nodded, Hange could notice the deep excitement etched in Y/N's face. She has a reserved, respectable nature as a scientist, and only Hange knew how twisted her desires and fantasies could be. Hange found a vital piece within her that would complete them. No one will ever come close to the profound connection they share.
Hange pulled Y/N close, planting a chase kiss on her lips as they gathered her in their arms. The kiss was only a superficial facade that veiled their raw and earnest love for each other. The research lab where they met will remain as an accessory to the meeting of two lovers who follow each other's twisted will.
"I can't wait to do this with you," Hange smiled on her lips. "Perhaps we can delve into deeper experiments right after, hm?"

The Id in Full
I found this on bilibili and had to share it. Honestly, I could never write anything this unhinged good. True insanity love cannot be replicated by a mere mortal such as I.
深情朗诵《我好想做兔毛手袋的实验品啊》,但伤痛英文散文风_哔哩哔哩_bilibili
Transcript below:
Oh, my beloved Medicine Pocket, with every fiber of my being, how I crave to be their most daring experiment — a test subject willingly consumed by an unyielding desire to explore the depths of their ingenious mind.
(哦,我最挚爱的兔毛手袋,我身上的每一根纤维都渴望成为他最大胆的实验品—— 一个心甘情愿的,被想探索他聪明的头脑深处的欲望彻底吞噬的试验品。)
How I ache to be the catalyst that ignites their creativity, the spark that sets ablaze the fires of inspiration within them.
(我多么渴望成为点燃他创造力的催化剂,成为点燃他内心灵感之火的火花。)
How I wish they take me into the inner sanctum of their laboratory and sculpt me into the masterpiece they envision.
(我多么希望他把我带进他实验室的内部圣殿,把我雕刻成他设想的杰作。)
Within the realm of daring experiments dismissed as mad science by everyone else, I yearn to surrender myself entirely, as a willing vessel for their extraordinary vision.
(即便他大胆的实验被他人斥为疯狂的科学,我渴望完全交出自己,成为实现他非凡实验愿景的容器。)
In their worldview where beauty is often measured by conventional standards, I humbly stand before them, aware that I may not possess the same conventional charm as a puppy or an arcanist.
(在他的世界观中,所谓的美往往是以常规的标准来衡量的,我卑微地站在他面前,意识到我可能不具备像只小狗或神秘学家那样的魅力。)
Yet, in the depths of my heart, like an unwavering flame of a Bunsen burner, a love flickers and dances, immune to the judgments of inadequacy.
(然而,在我的内心深处,就像本生灯坚定的火焰一样,我的爱在舞动,闪烁,不受对我不足之处的判断影响。)
Perhaps, in the grand tapestry of existence, I am destined to be but a humble creature, a mere vermin, a lab rat confined within the walls of their affection.
(也许,在称为“存在”的宏伟织锦中,我注定只是一个卑微的生物,一个单纯的害虫,一个被禁锢在他感情之墙的实验室白老鼠。)
Yet, even in this self-imposed diminishment, my heart remains steadfast, under a trembling breath, I implored, "Please, Medicine Pocket, allow me to be your lab rat."
(然而,即使是在这种自我贬斥的情况下,我的心依然坚定不移,在颤抖的呼吸下,我恳求道:"求求你,兔毛手袋,请允许我成为你的小白鼠。")
"Let me be your devoted lab rat, the embodiment of your curiosity, a vessel for your boundless imagination."
("让我成为你最忠诚的小白鼠,成为你好奇心的化身,成为你无限想象力的容器。")
As you study me, my love, remember that I am not merely a subject for scrutiny but a willing participant in this scientific romance.
(当你研究我时,我的挚爱,请记住,我不仅仅是一个被你审查的实验品,而是这个称为“浪漫”的科学中一个自愿的参与者。)
With every hypothesis they formulate, with every test they conduct, I willingly surrender myself to be the canvas upon where they paint their profound study, in which their genius takes flight.
(他提出的每一个假设,他进行的每一次测试,我都心甘情愿地交出自己,成为他那描绘深邃实验研究的画布,让他的非凡造詣能在上面自由翱翔。)
For it is in this vulnerable surrender that I find my truest purpose.
(因为正是在这种脆弱的屈服中, 我能够找到我存在的意义。)
Amidst the choices that weigh upon me, this transcends a mere deliberation between options like rofecoxib and pregabalin;
(在众多抉择中,这已经超越了在罗非昔布和普瑞巴林俩选项之间的单纯考虑;)
It is a matter of love.
(这是一个关于爱的问题。)
*注: matter也可翻译为物质(双关)
It is an impassioned dance of the heart, where emotions intertwine and intertwine, beckoning me to embrace the transformative power of connection.
(这是我一场狂热,情感交织的心灵之舞,指引我去拥抱那能让你彻底改观的联系。)
I find myself desiring to be a species entirely of my own, not just a lab rat, but a creation — a creation born from the amalgamation of your hands, my dear Medicine Pocket.
(我发现自己渴望成为一个独一无二物种,不只是一只实验室的白老鼠,而是一个创造物—— 一个由你的双手诞生的创造物,我亲爱的兔毛手袋。)
So, I implore you, my love, my dear Medicine Pocket, let me be your most audacious experiment.
(因此,我恳求你,我的挚爱,我亲爱的兔毛手袋,让我成为你最大胆的实验品吧。)
In your pursuit of knowledge and innovation, let us unearth a love that is extraordinary and unexplored, where the boundaries between scientist and subject dissolve, and we become something magnificent — a testament to the arcane wonders that unfold when love and science entwine.

intro. ryu jin-ah
Tumblr media
( son naeun, cis woman , she/her ) — amongst the faces lining the staff portrait wall, you recognize RYU JIN-AH, the thirty year old lab assistant within the school. having spent one year as a member of the verum staff, students say that they’re reminiscent of one’s vision clouding over after pouring over texts for hours; the scent of fresh ink as it sinks into a sheet of paper; fingers sinking softly into damp earth; the feeling of being nowhere and everywhere at once & the ringing of your own laughter in your ears despite not uttering a sound for hours. their devoted and ingenious temperament brings color to these halls, but be warned, you may also find them to be obstinate and deceitful. regardless, hopefully they’ll remain when it’s time for verum to open its doors again.
I. statistics.
FULL NAME: ryu jin-ah. AGE: thirty. BIRTHDAY: june 27, 902. PLACE OF BIRTH: the capital, clwyd-isle. GENDER: cis woman. PRONOUNS: she / her. SEXUALITY: bisexual. RELATIONSHIP STATUS: single.
MAGIC: khemia, elixirs / no rare magic / no familiar contract. OCCUPATION: lab assistant @ verum academy. RESIDENCE: ???. FAMILY: ryu ji-hoon, elder brother.
ZODIAC: cancer sun, libra moon, scorpio rising. MBTI: intj. ALIGNMENT: neutral good. TRAITS: devoted, ingenious ( ++ ) / obstinate, deceitful ( – ). AESTHETIC: one’s vision clouding over after pouring over texts for hours / the scent of fresh ink as it sinks into a sheet of paper / fingers sinking softly into damp earth / the feeling of being nowhere and everywhere at once / the ringing of your own laughter in your ears despite not uttering a sound for hours.
II. summary.
lab assistant, former elixirs major. younger sister of ryu ji-hoon. her entire personality is essentially "what would ji-hoon do?" except not even ji-hoon acts this way anymore. her family is from the capital, but since her brother is now a professor, she's aiming to become one too. surely, if her brother does something, it must be the right choice. not only for himself but for her as well.
she's very into research and is constantly trying to perfect the effect of potions, to make them work more effectively, or to become the person who discovers how to cure a worrisome ailment or, so secretly she doesn't admit it even to herself, how to make their effects long-lasting without causing irreversible damage. this last one is more a dream than something she actively strives for. she can be a bit odd, but just enough to create some pause. mad scientist lite, if you will. sometimes it seems as though her mind is in a faraway land, or a different world altogether.
III. more.

ROTTMNT Fanfic - Teddytello
That's right, ya boy is writing rottmnt angst now. Be prepared for most of the angst I write to be about Donnie, I project onto him so much. And honestly, don't we all write angst for the characters we love the most? No? Oh well.

"Ah, at last," Donnie spoke triumphantly, twirling around in his chair a few times with his newest creation in hand, raised high above him proudly. "I have finally invented something that will solve my greatest adversary. And, of course, simplicity is key." He lowered the item to eye level and stared contemplatively at it, pouting a little. "I just hope this doesn't become the new Albearto." He stood up from his seat, then after letting out a sigh, he left his lab to find his brothers, carrying his creation under his arm.
Donnie took confident strides towards the sewer's skateramp area where he knew his brothers usually gathered. As predicted, they were all there - Leo was practicing his skating while Mikey cheered him on and Raph cautiously observed.
"Excuse me, gentlemen," Donnie loudly called out, announcing his arrival. Leo, who was in the middle of a handstand atop his skateboard at the top of the ramp, wavered a little after being startled by his brother, which caused his skateboard to tip over the edge and slide down, with Leo falling off and sliding behind it. Mikey giggled at the spectacle and jogged over to his older brother, making sure he was okay. Raph turned to Donnie, then raised a curious eyebrow at him.
"Hey Donnie," Raph greeted, then glanced down at what was under Donnie's arm. "Whatcha got there?"
"Oh, this?" Donnie smirked smugly, placing his free hand on his hip briefly. Leo and Mikey, having recovered from the previous mishap, had now stood up and came closer to Donnie, also curious about what he was holding with mixed expressions. "Brothers, may I present to you...Teddytello!" He thrust the plush version of himself in his brothers' faces, causing them to back up a little. Mikey's eyes lit up excitedly.
"Wow Donnie, he looks just like you," Mikey complimented enthusiastically, flapping his fists a little. "So this is why you wanted to learn how to sew!"
Donnie chuckled confidently. "Why yes it is, my dear Michelangelo." He then held a fist up, dramatically preparing himself for an 'emotional' speech. "It took much blood, sweat and tears to perfect this latest creation of mine. But did I give up? No - I persevered. I had to finish this ingenious invention." He then turned to his brothers, extending an open hand to them. "I did this all for you, dear brothers."
The three of them stared at Donnie in confusion for a moment before Mikey smiled excitedly.
"Can I hold it?" he asked.
"Of course," Donnie replied, handing over the plush to his younger brother. Mikey held it by the torso, then rotated it in his hands to investigate.
"This looks incredible, Donnie," he praised once again. Donnie tried to hide his contentment.
"Is that all it is?" Leo groaned disappointedly, which warranted a disapproving glare from Raph.
"Oh how you underestimate me," Donnie answered, shakily his head. "Mikey, perhaps you wouldn't mind demonstrating a hug on Teddytello?"
Mikey nodded compliantly, then tightly held the plush, pressing his face against it. The plush proceeded to make soft chirping noises, just loud enough that the brothers could all hear.
"Woah Donnie, did you record this?" Mikey asked sincerely.
Donnie cleared his throat nervously, his cheeks tinting red. "I cannot comment on that." Before his brothers could call out Donnie's blatant avoidance, Mikey let out a surprised gasp.
"I think the plushie is warming up," Mikey commented nervously. "Is that meant to happen?"
"Indeed it is," Donnie assured. "I specifically designed this plush to heat up and make noise when it is held like this."
"I still don't get it," Leo confessed. "What is the purpose of this?"
Donnie went quiet for a moment, his confident façade dropping a bit. "Well, I know how physically affectionate you are. And how...uncomfortable it can make me. I know you all understand this about me and respect it, but I do feel guilty that I cannot provide for you in this way all the time." A smile crept on his face. "That's why I figured I should make this for those times that I am unavailable."
Raph's expression dropped a little, but before he could say anything, Leo snatched the plush from Mikey, squeezing it a little more fiercely than Mikey did. He then smirked.
"Wow Donnie, this is amazing," Leo praised, though only Raph seemed to notice the sarcastic tone. "This plush might even be a better hugger than you." Donnie clicked his tongue in annoyance.
"Yeah," Mikey agreed in blissful ignorance. "It's super soft and the warmth is comforting."
Donnie twiddled his fingers uncomfortably. "Yes, well, I did add the heat feature to simulate body warmth like you would receive from a hug." He was about to continue speaking, but after having his mouth agape for a moment, he closed it defeatedly. He then folded his arms nervously and began tapping his fingers restlessly.
"This is great, Donnie," Mikey chirped, happily bouncing up and down by bending his legs. "Now we can hug you whenever we want!" Donnie snarled quietly, trying to stifle his frustration.
"Say Donnie, did you program this plush to ramble at us?" Leo asked teasingly.
"No," Donnie answered bluntly through gritted teeth, a little hurt by the question.
"Awesome!" Leo then grinned smugly at Donnie. "Thanks for the new brother!"
"WELL, I'M GLAD YOU LIKE HIM SO MUCH!" Donnie snapped in annoyance, startling his brothers. His eyes widened for a second before narrowing again. He then yelled loudly and turned to leave the room. After he had left, Mikey and Raph scowled at Leo.
"What? I didn't say anything wrong," Leo excused as he looked between his brothers.
"You went too far, Leo," Raph huffed.
"Donnie puts up with our hugs a lot, even though it makes him uncomfortable," Mikey added, twirling his fingers anxiously. "But he doesn't completely hate it when we hug him, it's just that he likes it when he hugs us first."
"I don't see your point," Leo huffed in irritation.
"You acted like this plush is better than Donnie," Mikey continued sadly. "Wouldn't you be upset if we replaced you with something you gave to us as a gift?"
Leo frowned for a moment, then his expression softened. "I guess I took the joke a bit too far," Leo admitted.
"You think?" Raph sharply remarked.
"Okay, I get it, I acted like a jerk." Leo nervously scratched the back of his neck. "I'll go talk to him."
"I'll come with you," Mikey offered.
"Actually Mikey, could you give me 10 minutes with Donnie alone?" Leo asked gently, to which Mikey reluctantly nodded. Leo placed a hand on his shoulder. "Thanks, buddy." With the plush under his arm, Leo left the room, leaving Raph behind with a worried Mikey.
"Don't worry, big man," Raph assured, pulling Mikey into a side hug. "Those two may have their differences, but they always get through them."
Leo reluctantly entered Donnie's room, quickly scanning around the room to find Donnie laying facedown on his bed grumbling into his pillow.
"Hey, Donnie?" Leo spoke with a hint of playfulness.
"Go away," Donnie demanded, raising his head to speak before plopping it back onto his pillow.
"Can you hear me out first?" Leo asked cautiously. After a few seconds of silence, Leo took it as his cue to continue. "I'm sorry about what I said in the other room. You know I was only joking, right?"
Donnie suddenly turn on his side, scowling at Leo. "So because you were joking, that negates any of the negative repercussions of your actions?"
Leo flinched. "What? No, that's not what I meant." He broke eye contact, nervously rubbing the back of his neck.
"Ah, so you making comments about my tendencies to ramble and such were purely comedic and not at all coming from a place of self truth?" Donnie snarled sarcastically.
Leo's eyes widened. "Well, not exactly. I will admit, sometimes when you rabbit away at me about technical gibberish I get a little exasperated. But that's only because I don't really understand what you're talking about. I'm not saying I want you to shut up all together. In a way I am actually...a bit jealous of you."
"Jealous? Oh please, Leo, don't start trying to crawl out of this with such a desperate excuse," Donnie snapped angrily.
"I'm being serious, Don," Leo pressed with adamance, causing Donnie to untense a little. “You are incredibly smart and creative. We wouldn't be where we are as a team- no, as a family without you. When I see you and your tech, Mikey's artistry and Raph's strength, I feel so pathetic in comparison. I...don't have any of that." He forced a smile before continuing. "I think you'd all do fine or maybe even better without me." His smile dropped a little. "You all almost died because of me after all. You all wouldn't have let that happen if you were in my position, I'm sure."
Donnie sat up with a worried expression. "You...don't really believe all that, do you?"
Leo chuckled nervously. "I mean, I'm not exactly wrong, am I?" He then took the plush from under his arm and held it in his hands. "I guess that's why I am so competitive with you all. I just...I want a chance to be the best at something, anything, so I can stop feeling like the spare wheel." He unknowingly began to tighten his grip on the plush, his face scrunching a little whilst still trying to maintain his fake confidence. "Though, maybe I'd be more useful to you all in the Prison Dimension-"
"Don't you dare finish that thought, Leo." Donnie snapped with tears in his eyes, bringing Leo's attention back to his brother.
"W-wait, I didn't mean-"
Before Leo could finish his sentence, Donnie leapt out of his bed and hugged Leo tightly, catching him off guard and causing him to drop the plush version of his brother.
"D-Donnie? What are you..." Leo became choked up, his vision blurring from his tears. "I'm sorry," he whimpered, wrapping his arms around Donnie and nestling his head in his brother's shoulders. Donnie's eyes welled up more and he tightened his grip of Leo. The two of them stood there for a while as Leo attempted to cry as quietly as possible, not wanting his other brothers to overhear. Eventually he pulled away, wiping his eyes.
"Did that help?" Donnie asked nervously.
"It sure did," Leo answered, once again forcing a smile. "If I had to rate the experience, I'd say I am extremely satisfied." He smirked and winked playfully at his brother. Donnie smiled a little before looking at his creation and frowning a little.
"It probably would have been more satisfying coming from Teddytello," he reluctantly noted. "After all, I designed him specifically to be superior to me in hugging. Not that it's a particularly difficult feat."
"Well, maybe in theory it would be a better hugger," Leo spoke rubbing his chin thoughtfully. "But what makes your hugs so special is that it's you! And I know you don't always want to hug, but that just makes the times you do hug us all the more special!"
Donnie blushed a little from embarrassment. "Ugh, Mikey is way better for this mushy stuff." He looked at Leo, who was now grinning cheekily. "But...I suppose it's fine if it's you every now and then. It's not often we really open up to each other, huh?"
Leo scratched his cheek. "Yeah, you're not wrong about that. I guess neither of us really likes to be vulnerable." Leo then went quiet, looking away as he fell deep into thought, his face expressing guilt. "While we are being honest though, I just want you to know that no amount of tech or anything could replace you. You know that, right?"
Donnie fell silent. "Well...admittedly, it does appear to me that sometimes you value my inventions more than me. I've always somewhat believed that if my tech were to no longer be of use to you all, I'd have no use on the team. For a while, I became bitter than you were all using your mystic powers when all I had was my unreliable tech. It’s no wonder you appear disinterested whenever I create something new.”
"What are you talking about? Your tech is amazing!" Leo's eyes lit up with a genuine admiration. "It's always awesome to see what you can do. And sure, sometimes your inventions don't work as planned, but the same could be said of our mystic powers. Have you forgotten how long it took for me to get my portals to work how I wanted them to?"
Donnie chuckled. "I remember."
"Exactly." Leo smiled warmly. "Besides, without your tech, we would all be turtle meat by now. You saved us all from the Krang with your escape pod thingies." He glanced down before continuing, his smile fading. "Meanwhile, I was the one constantly putting you all in danger."
"Perhaps, but you were put in an extremely difficult position," Donnie spoke honestly. "You didn't know how important that key was before Casey arrived - none of us did. And for the situation to change so quickly...it's no wonder you became panicked. Could you have benefitted from listening to us earlier? Maybe. But I can't say I wouldn't have acted similarly in your situation. And when it came down to it, you were willing to risk you life to save us all. I...don't know that I would have had your resolve. We are all alive thanks to that sacrifice. And not just us, you saved everyone." Donnie looked away. "Though had you of not come back, I don't know if I would have been able to forgive you. I know you did what you had to in order to protect us, but you're still our brother, you know? Nothing and no one could have filled the void you would have left if we weren't able to bring you home."
Leo smiled bittersweetly. "I know. There was probably a million things I could have done differently. But in that moment, the only thing that mattered to me was keeping you all safe. I was willing to trade my life for you. And I'd do it again if it meant keeping you all safe."
"And I don't want to lose either of you," Mikey interjected, startling both of his brothers.
"Sorry guys," Raph apologised. "I tried to stop him but Mikey insisted on seeing you both."
Mikey teared up. "I love you both so much", he continued, ignoring what Raph has said. "I don't want to lose either of you, ever! You're both too important to me, with or without your weapons or your tech." He then began wiping his tears with his hands, helpless to stop the tears.
"I'm sorry, Mikey," Leo apologies, turning and hugging his brother softly. Without hesitating, Donnie joined them, wrapping his arms around his brothers, to which Raph gently held the three of them, doing his best not to make Donnie uncomfortable. They all teared up, recalling the events of when the Krang invaded. None of them ever wanted to experience that again.
"I'm okay now, guys," Mikey eventually spoke up sheepishly, which prompted the others to back off slowly. "I didn't mean to get emotional out of nowhere."
"It's okay, Mikey," Donnie assured, then side eyed Leo. "I think sometimes we all need a moment to just feel our emotions fully." Leo knelt down and picked up the plush Donnie again, pouting. He hugged it again, then scowled and threw it away, dusting his hands off after.
"Yeah no, I still prefer the real thing," Leo remarked. "With all due respect, Donnie, this might be the worst thing you've ever made."
Mikey giggled. "Yeah! I much prefer hugging you, even if that means I don't get hugs from you as often."
"It's super sweet that you did this for us, Donnie," Raph added. "But it's as the others said - there's no replacing the real thing."
Donnie beamed widely, blushing a little from the flattery. "Thank you, guys. It means a lot."
"Hug?" Mikey asked, opening his arms wide.
"Oh, uhh," Donnie stammered. "I think I might be at my capacity for hugs. Sorry Mikey." He glanced over at the plush, insecurity welling up inside of him.
"That's fine, I can wait," MIkey chirped. He then followed Donnie's gaze to the plush. "I don't need Dummytello, either. He's a terrible hugger." He then poked his tongue out at the plush, warranting a laugh from his brothers.
"Thank you," Donnie spoke softly. "I feel a lot better now."
"Anytime, bro," Leo said smugly. "Though next time you feel insecure about something, maybe don't make a plush replacement of yourself and just talk to us about it instead?"
Donnie frowned. "Speak for yourself, Liar-nardo."
Leo chuckled nervously. "Touché." He then cleared his throat. "So, uhh, you guys up for a family sleepover tonight? We can binge some Jupiter Jim movies. Eh? Eh?"
"Yay, sleepover!" Mikey cheered, bouncing up and down.
"Let's go get some pillows and blankets, Mikey," Raph suggested. "Leo and Donnie can get the films." As the two of them left the room, Raph nodded at them, then continued to make their way out.
"So what should we do with Dummytello?" Leo asked, pouting a little as he stared at the plush with contempt.
"Well, it would be a shame to completely scrap such a beautiful work of art," Donnie remarked playfully. "But I might be able to rework some of the components.
Leo then smirked. "You know, you never did answer Mikey on the chirping sounds the plush makes. Did you-"
"Aaand we are leaving," Donnie interrupted, bumping Leo as he left the room.
"Hey, wait up," Leo called out, catching up to his brother and leaving the room together as they engaged in a playful back and forth.

𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐲𝐨𝐮'𝐫𝐞 𝐨𝐧 𝐦𝐲 𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐝 / PART ONE (albedo)
a drabble series that explores what would happen if you were to reunite with them after a long time apart ♡ will come out in parts :D aka an excuse for me to be a cheesy mf for six drabbles in a row
𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐝𝐞𝐬: albedo, scaramouche, xiao, dottore, and thoma
Tumblr media
-> you've become acquainted with many people over the course of your unnaturally long life, but amongst your favourite of companions was the revered khaenrian alchemist, rhinedottir. both a dear friend and partner, you were at her side voluntarily throughout the destruction of khaenri'ah, and remained there even as her ingenious creations bled into the rest of teyvat.
-> in the ranks of the monsters she created, however, lied something far more special -- what she had dubbed her primordial human project finally yielded a human man, made of chalk not unlike the snow on the mountain she resided.
-> perfectly coherent and sharing the same genius as his master, he assimilated into life quickly, gaining the name albedo. and though you saw him grow alongside your friend, witnessed the spark of curiosity light in his eyes, and taught him what it meant to be entirely human, your time together was ultimately short-lived.
-> rhinedottir was a person in her own right, and had callings elsewhere. callings that bid her away from her experiments, albeit slightly unwillingly. yet still, she had grown confident in her creation. in albedo, she saw someone fit to sew the seeds of a new world, and left him to pick up what she had left in the snowy mountaintops of dragonspine.
-> and though it hurt you more to leave him, you were no different. life bid you elsewhere. and for centuries, it's where you remained. out of reach, and hopefully, out of mind -- though, truthfully, the man you'd known was never completely free from your thoughts.
-> for a time, you thought albedo would hate to see you return. you'd left him so easily, and so who are you to return expecting the same demeanour? you deign over it for many months before deciding that you've had enough. your centuries apart may never be forgotten, but you hope that at the very least, albedo will not turn you away.
Tumblr media
you'd once learned from morax that the earth is always changing. the archon himself had planted spears of rock in the earth, after all, jutting up to form islands and change the landscape forevermore. however, when you step back into the snowy mountains of dragonspine, you begin to doubt the philosophy.
footpaths have since been carved out, and a multitude of camps have been situated along the tricky terrain. but the jagged peaks of rock are the same as you remember. even after centuries, the mountain has remained the same; it has merely grown.
tugging a set of furs closer to your shivering body, you let out a foggy breath. frost nips at your face even through the carefully woven mask that shields it. fortunately, you had taken note of your memory of the icy temperatures beforehand, and were certainly right to prepare the garment for your ascent.
the trip doesn't seem nearly as hard as it once had been, the aforementioned footpaths more defined and leaving a clear way up the mountain. though, to tell the truth, you're not sure how to feel at the option of a quicker journey.
you had intended to use the time you would spend trekking through the snow to think about how to introduce yourself to albedo, if he still even remembers your face, that is. the man had only been a new creation when you'd last seen him, and centuries later, you can't be sure that you've stood the test of time.
but, you've reminded yourself again and again that any outcome will be fine. in the worst case scenario, even just a small exchange with him will be enough.
trudging up the steep angle of the mountain, you nearly drop to your knees and weep once you approach the wooden bridge that had once led to rhinedottir's lab -- only now, it's entirely broken.
you'd packed a glider just in case, but amidst the strong wind, you'd be a fool to even try using it. with your luck, you'd probably be tossed back down to the foot of the mountain by a nasty updraft.
"excuse me! are you alright?”
a faint voice breaks you out of your thoughts. you look up from where you rummage in your pack to the opposite end of the broken bridge, where someone waves their hands for your attention.
you shout back, "yes! i just need to get across!"
faintly, you notice the person take in your environment. the snowy wind will surely pose a challenge, but they seem confident as they eventually yell back across the rocky depths,
"jump!"
even within your centuries of living, you fail to recall anyone offering you such a reckless suggestion. you don't want to be too difficult though, so you spend a few moments observing the chasm below and weigh your options. perhaps you could craft something to help you? but not even you could make something of use with such short notice.
so, when you're unable to find any alternatives, you shoulder your pack with a grumble and cup your hands to your mouth.
"are you out of your mind?!"
a lack of response indicates their answer enough.
shaking your head and muttering obscenely, after a few moments of shuffling, you realise you truly have no other choice. perhaps the person at the other end of the bridge has seen people like you time and time again, and is sure that the jump won't be a difficult one.
it's the only comfort you can think to offer yourself as you prepare for the worst, stepping back to run and make your leap of faith.
when you jump, the world goes entirely still around you. it's as if the wind and snow stop their cycles to watch you, holding their breaths in the same clipped fashion that you do. in those mere seconds, you feel as though you're completely ready to accept your failure and meet your demise quietly, all without even meeting albedo at all.
but just when you feel your faith slipping from you, someone grips tightly onto your hands. and when you open your eyes, the world immediately resumes, your boot landing hard on the metal frame at the other end of the bridge.
the stranger had grabbed you at the very last second.
gasping out strangled breaths, your instincts kick back in quickly as you help them haul your frozen body up onto solid ground. the stranger watches over you silently as you get to a knee, chest heaving.
his voice is quiet when he asks, "...are you okay?"
you laugh in exasperation. "yes, quite. it's been a long time since i last crossed that bridge, so the last thing i expected was for it to be--"
as you speak, you attempt to compose yourself to the best of your ability. the sudden event has shaken you, understandably. but what you don't anticipate, however, is the equally as rapturing gaze staring down at you.
candescent blue eyes watch you carefully, and all of the sudden, you forget your words.
"it's you." you breathe, taking note of the way his outstretched hand falters. albedo offers a polite, but undeniably confused, smile.
"it is me." he parrots, handling your forwardness with little difficulty. albedo's face hardly even changes. "did you come up the mountain looking for the chief alchemist of the knights of favonius, perhaps?"
the words make sense alone, but your mind fails you when trying to put them all together. it hits you suddenly -- the world certainly has moved on without you.
albedo offers a polite smile when he notices your hesitance, though the gesture is quite empty. you can only hope it’s because he fails to recognise your identity beneath the mask.
considering your answer carefully, you say, "...the chief alchemist? is that what they call you now?"
he gives you a thoughtful look.
"shall we get you somewhere warmer?"
and you think that the least you can do is comply when he pulls you unsteadily to your feet, away from the gaping chasm and closer to the faint glow of fire. your heart burns with embarrassment as your body resists more with each step up the mountain. but albedo's grip is strong and reassuring in yours.
"can you walk alright?" he asks.
you begin to nod. though you might still be slightly shaken, you'd lived a thousand lives, surely something so small wouldn't --
your thoughts are cut short as you stumble.
laughing awkwardly, you try to stand back up on your own even as albedo's hands are insistent on your shoulder. "...i'm sorry, it's embarrassing that i'm even letting you see me like this."
"forgive me if this is too forward, but have we met before?" albedo's head turns to yours as if to observe the non-descript features your mask provides. you want to offer him a smile, but your hands are unfortunately occupied.
albedo glances towards you as if somehow knowing your inner struggle, but continues to look ahead once he begins to speak. "i'm sorry to say that my memory with visitors... it is often not as good as it is with other things."
you nod in understanding, but are unable to help the small bolt of fear that strikes through you.
as you approach a comfortably lit area, albedo loosens his grip on your arm and guides you to a wooden stool sat near a fire. you push out an awkward noise as you settle on it, noticing how albedo's hand is almost hesitant to separate from you.
you settle down with a light exhale. albedo keeps a casual eye on you as he navigates around the makeshift camp, occasionally gathering materials for what you can only assume is stew simmering over the fire.
all considering, the small hole in the mountain makes for a smart experimentation site. instinctively, a wandering hand goes to pull your mask up in the presence of heat. but, when albedo dips into the seat beside you moments after, you catch yourself.
reluctantly lowering your hand from the material, albedo gives you a considerate smile. he has no idea.
"so," he starts politely, sprinkling a bit of red powder into the pot. "you said that you aren't here to see the chief alchemist?"
you correct him, "...i didn't say anything like that. i just wasn't aware there was much a person."
he nods. "...right. are you just passing through, then?"
for a moment, you aren't sure how to answer.
"not exactly. i did make it up here on purpose, i promise you."
albedo's attention is still away from you, so you take liberty in watching him for a moment -- and only that, considering how sharp you know his instincts to be. truly, it really isn't as you'd feared. albedo is still the very same roughly sculpted man you had created all those years ago, he has only smoothened out his edges with time.
"on purpose, and you didn't know that the bridge was broken?" you can hear the teasing accusation in his voice, and you laugh quietly in response.
"it's been quite a few years since i last spent any time on this mountain." you remind him. albedo casts a curious eye back to you, but pulls his attention away as the stew begins to bubble.
he nods, eyes suddenly pinned mindlessly somewhere below him.
"...so you've said. what was your reason for coming up the mountain, then?"
when you don't answer for a few heavy minutes, albedo continues without you. his previously steady and detached voice suddenly gains depth, an honest yet somehow frugal sort of intimacy that's very much like him.
he hesitates. "did you really think you'd be able to keep your identity secret from me for long?" he asks, voice soft. your mouth opens and closes, trying to form an explanation in such an unforeseen situation.
though, in the end, you choose to swallow your words and raise a trembling hand, pulling down the woven mask that covers your features. your apology is near silent.
"i was waiting until I was absolutely sure you remembered me." you confess. with that, albedo finally looks at you, blue eyes lit with a faint sense of determination. his expression falters almost unnoticeably at the sight of your face, but you catch it because you know it. you know him.
he tries to keep the accusation out of his voice, but still pushes you as he asks, "how could i ever forget you?"
you go silent at the admission, mouthing his name in a soundless plea.
when you had first met albedo, he had been a blank slate. but as all creations of rhinedottir's, he too was meant to earn his complexities. his personality, his likes, his dislikes, even the extent of his knowledge was to be determined by nothing but himself from the moment he was created.
you thought you had known him well when you'd helped him discover himself centuries ago, and seeing the remnants of the person you'd held so close to your heart still existing so much later had only given you confidence in that.
but as you'd already ascertained, just as the world has, albedo has also moved on to become someone new.
you register it first by the odd chill of his hands over your clothes, in the way that he's suddenly much closer. and though you aren't entirely sure if he has a heart, you swear that you can feel it beating when your chest meets his.
"...how long can you stay?" albedo questions you, and pain shoots through you at the realisation that he's still unaware of the nature of your visit. though, before you can answer, he takes you into his arms fully. carefully. as though he expects you to dissolve at his touch.
releasing a shuddering breath, you shake your head. and fleetingly, you hope that by wrapping your own arms around him, you can solidify your presence.
"as long as i can."

25 | The Fading Light
Pairing: Todoroki x Fem!Reader
Until the End Masterlist
"We made it to the spacecraft, but something's happened to Mei. The connection was cut off, and we heard something terrible happen in the bunker. We need to figure out what's going on."
The group falls silent, their eyes locked on Todoroki, digesting the weight of the situation. Uncertainty looms in the air.
"So, uh, now what?" Sero gulps. "We're not superheroes."
"Well, at least you got your tape," Bakugou chuckles as he not-so-subtly flexes his biceps. "But seriously, we weren't just sitting around here while the two of you walked off."
Todoroki raises an eyebrow, his curiosity piqued by Bakugou's cryptic statement. "What're you talking about?"
Bakugou smirks, relishing the opportunity to unveil their ingenious plan. "We used Sero's tape to create a solid tunnel leading back to the bunker. That's what I'm talking about," he declares, his confidence radiating through his words. "No more stumbling around in the dark or getting separated from the group. We've got a straight path back, ready to kick some ass and find out what the hell is happening."
The revelation brings a surge of hope back into your bones. With the knowledge that you have a tangible means of returning to the bunker, your mind shifts from uncertainty to resolve.
"All right, let's get back and get to the bottom of this," Todoroki asserts, his voice steady and resolute.
You follow Sero, Midoriya, and Bakugou as they lead the way back to the bunker. The tension is thick as you make your way through the door that Ida had guided you through previously. Eager to gather any information, you decide to take a moment to quietly peek into the hallway of the bunker on your own.
Silently, you step forward and press your back against the wall, carefully scanning the dimly lit corridor. The faint hum of activity echoes through the air, heightening your senses. A sliver of fear lingers within you, aware that any misstep could lead to discovery.
Bakugou, unable to contain his curiosity, leans in close to the door, his impatience evident in his voice. "What do you see?"
You shoot him a warning look, placing a finger to your lips, urging him to be quiet. "Shh, we'll get caught if you're too loud," you whisper. The last thing you need is to draw unwanted attention to your group.
However, Bakugou's persistence remains unyielding. He opens his mouth to speak again, but before he can utter a word, you swiftly grab onto his forehead and push him back into the room with the others. "Did you not get the fucking hint?!" you grumble.
Sero then interjects. "Should we all go out together then?" he suggests.
Todoroki quickly dismisses the idea. "No way, that's too reckless. If we all get caught it's over."
Midoriya's desire to take action is evident in his eyes. "I'll go then," he volunteers for the group. And after a collective nod from the group, he gets ready and leaves.
Without giving the others a chance to protest, you make your own quick decision. Silently, you also slip out of the room, heading towards the hallway. You know the risks, but you can't stand idly by while others are in danger.
Moments later, you catch up to Midoriya, who gasps in surprise. His voice is stern as he admonishes you for following him. "You shouldn't have come!" he says firmly, concern etched across his features.
But you meet his gaze with equal resolve. "Oh come on, I want to make sure Mei is okay too," you insist. "Don't make me go back and listen to them yell at me!"
Luckily, Midoriya gives in. Together, you make your way through the bunker. As you approach the lab, an eerie silence hangs in the air, sending a shiver down your back. The absence of people raises an unsettling feeling within you.
Suddenly, a gunshot pierces the silence, followed by the panicked screams of innocent people. Your heart races as you peer through the open door, your eyes widening at the sight before you. An armed group has taken hostages, and Mina, the pink-haired girl, stands at the center of it all, her gun pointed toward the ceiling.
"That little..." you trail off as you begin to put everything together. She must've been the one messing with you over the Bluetooth.
Realizing the gravity of the situation, you turn to Midoriya, urgency coloring your voice. "We have to go back and tell the others," you state.
Midoriya nods in agreement, his expression mirroring your concern. Without hesitation, the two of you retreat, retracing your steps towards the others, your minds racing with the need to devise a plan, to gather help, and to confront the imminent threat that looms over your friends and the bunker.
Arriving back with the group, Midoriya bursts with urgency, his words tumbling out in a rush as he explains everything you witnessed so fast. The others listen in shocked silence, their minds working overtime to process the information that is being thrown at them. You simply nod in confirmation, affirming that Midoriya's account captures the essence of what you experienced.
Todoroki breaks the silence with a clear voice. "We've got to come up with a plan to help the hostages," he tells the group.
"Yeah, no shit," Bakugou murmurs to himself.
Realizing that time is on your side, you suggest taking a step back to carefully observe the movements and routines of the rival group. By identifying their weaknesses and vulnerabilities, you can exploit them to rescue the hostages and neutralize the threat more effectively.
"Well, we can't take too long," Midoriya gulps. "We don't know what'll happen to them."
"Then we'll need Sero's help," you continue. "We should start by making them blind, cutting off the cameras, and disabling their security systems. Bakugou, you'll have to be in, too, neutralize whatever guards they have."
"Now that's a plan I can get into," Bakugou beams with excitement.
"Then what're we waiting for," Sero grins. "Let's get started now!"

𝐛𝐞𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐤 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐞 .
the childhood of vermont’s a frigid, sometimes desolate one, but not once does the cold of the outside ever seep into the house. there is warmth to the place, to the family living in it.
her parents are not wealthy – there is more to be appreciated in creating, they say. money nags at every idea, every need, but they are ingenious enough to make ends meet. her father the town's most in-demand carpenter, she remembers what the keen sting of a wood splinter in the pad of her thumb feels like as much as she does the lingering smell of oil paints and new canvas that creeps out from below the door of her mother’s studio. beverly grows up as the youngest of three: two sons and a daughter, each as bright as the next. despite that, she is her brothers’ keepers. the level-headed one, the one whose smile won’t falter, never mind the gaps of three and five years between her and them.
life is punctuated by the passing of the seasons, all within the bounds of the town she calls home. what breaks the monotony are the rare holidays spent east along the coastline of maine, with little else to disrupt each and every year beverly goes through like clockwork. she is sixteen when a new kid in her chemistry class, the lab partner always with a sharp bite to their words ( but for her, is always kinder ) asks, don’t you wanna know what’s past all of this? aren’t you bored, bev? the idea, the wake up call, it doesn’t much stay with her. at least, not for another year or so, when they are gone ( nyc, this place was just a blip in the radar of growing pains ) off and away to something bigger. she doesn’t recognise the jealousy – can’t find the name for the tense feeling which unfurls in her chest.
to leave is the most frightened beverly has felt. she arrives to a boston that is loud and overwhelming and non-stop and she is in slow motion ; backwards. there are others in the campus dorms who are lonely, she knows, but eventually they will return home. beverly will not. no matter how much she dreads the solitude, she promises herself when she gets honour roll that she will not go back. it will be the one selfish thing she does, though her voice on the phone to her parents is as airy as they know it to be. what good is there, worrying those she promised to make proud?
it’s the meagre savings and the keen eye of a grad student that lead her to park place. from experience, they know life after college is disjointed at best and it's clear in the fatigue written into beverly's face. she takes on the lease, settles into the bare, creaky apartment that eventually becomes her home.
𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐛𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐤 .
beverly finally had the life she wanted appear within her grasp. rather than choose to tolerate being a laboratory technician that left her with nowhere to go beside where she stood, she worked several jobs to make ends meet and began studying once more to land herself at the museum of science as an assistant curator. days before the outbreak, a friend from college, one who’d seen through the sleepless nights revising with her in the library, the first person she’d met on campus, had flown north to visit and celebrate her new job. nothing, not even the peculiar whispers from her old workmates that something was causing trouble for them down in the labs, could dull the elation of being with an old friend. the obliviousness would be their downfall. one in the morning on a saturday, voices high into the balmy summer night sky. arm in arm, they’re laughing. [ trigger warning : death , infected . ] before the two of them know it, they are cornered in a frenzied crowd. she blinks, and it becomes a cacophony of screams. beverly chalks it down to the alcohol over her inability to stop and reach for her friend before it’s too late to reverse the impulse decision, the opening she thinks they can go for. except she knew, there was no way out – not without a casualty. [ trigger warning end . ]
𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐨𝐧𝐬 .
currently, beverly is torn between allowing herself to mourn the person she used to be, and who she seems to be turning into. she put herself forward to become a supplier and took on that risk as penance. yet, it's only proven to herself how willing she is to let others take the fall as a means of self-preservation.
used to living in an apartment that seems to crumble away in some form every six months, she’s put the skills of being a carpenter’s daughter to good use. when it came down to it, she figured being the most dextrous with the hammer would give her an edge. wouldn't it be nice to go back to a time when she only ever put up craigslist ads offering to put ikea furniture together for a little extra cash.
in recent months, with park place growing colder, she’s begun to skim an item here or there in fear there’ll eventually be nothing left to bring back. even so, she’ll keep small bits and pieces to give to people that she can see needs them more than she does.
innately feels the world owes her something, and the bad taste in her mouth is becoming stronger – but doesn’t it owe everyone, at least a little?

I was working in the lab, late one night When my eyes beheld an eerie sight For my monster from his slab, began to rise
You were The Soul. You dedicated your life to unraveling the fabric of what was and what should be, you navigated the places of the unseen and lent your ingenious mind to the progression of the human race. Thanks to you, The Eye is going to change the world. So, why not celebrate? You made friends at the party, you danced, you stumbled and fumbled your way around the dance floor until a few strangers caught your eye. There was at least one that you recognized but the others were strangers, they offered you a drink after they led you to the mausoleum and laughed as you spat blood across the floor. Special wine collected just for the vampires at the party. You laughed too, but you could see a hungry glint in their eye, their laughter wasn’t kind. Just cruel. When you went to leave you found that you couldn’t move, restricted by magic. Their laughter rang into something worse; ritual chanting dragged you to an altar - you saw the knife before you felt it, but then you felt it again and again. Over and over until there was less of you on the hollowed stone than there was on the floor.
Across the party the air was quickly charged with the palpable effects of dark magic, wine soured, food turned to rot, and the spells that had been carefully laid across the hall of mirrors lifted. If only this was the worst of it. Rome is a city of bones and dead, every ruin built upon the backs of another and the palace of Pluto is no different. From the mausoleum, the graveyard, and the foundations of the palace itself, the dead began to stir as they crawled towards guests who were not yet convinced that this wasn’t all part of the event. A few people laughed, others cheered and clapped, event staff were the first to start running - screams followed shortly after as the dead bit into the living and tore at the throat
The Palace of Pluto stood at the epicenter, but the spell expanded gradually, pushed from the raveyard and across the grounds, slowly spreading as it threatened to encompass all of Rome. In parallel, the Otherworld was thrown into chaos as well as spirits ravaged the feywilds making navigation through it impossible for anyone, even the fey. Those closest to the mausoleum were chased away as an impenetrable ward was placed over the house of the dead, protecting it from any incursions.
Nearly two-thousand years had passed since a spell similar to this one had been cast, when the coven of Asphodel had last reared its head half of Rome had burned in the conflict. Fey fought against fey, druid against druid, witch against witch. The necronomicon, now reunited for months, has brought the coven back in force as they used the Halloween gathering as their opportunity to announce their presence in the city. Among the dead that flooded the hall, The Pythia of the Asphodel coven announced her coven, dawning the costume of a serpent, their scales rippled in refracted candlelight as the dead stilled to stand at attention.
“Fear not the bite of the dead, for those who fall tonight will return as Terrors: Ghouls, Dopples, Strigoi, and Drow. For thousands of years the senate has not served this city, but subjugated it. Senator after senator, corrupt marshal after corrupt marshal - even now they hold the Queen of all fey, Titania in chains.” They scoffed as they were joined by The Burnt, The Nomad, and The Egotist. A chimera, a blood witch, and an exiled eladrin respectively, “Iron bars to hold a woman who is not even of this world - and yet is to be made an example of.” With a single gesture The Pythia flung open the doors, “The Alstroemeria house has fallen, Asphodel house stands now in its place, those who wish to join us can find us there.”
“Happy Halloween.” An eruption of cold flame consumed The Pythia and their companions, and they were gone. Vanished into the Otherworld as the dead swarmed the living once again.
Oooo spooky, the dead are walkin’ ere!
The Coven of Asphodel has murdered The Soul, you can now unfollow Kadir Osman.
Dead are rising from their graves, zombies and skeletons alike, spirits that have not yet become corporeal have been given form and are raising hell.
In game this starts at 11pm with the spell gradually expanding as it spreads from the mausoleum, by dawn, it will encompass all of Rome and the city will be consumed by the undead.
To break the spell the source of the spell must be destroyed, a crystal within the mausoleum. The Oracle was given a clue on how to reach the mausoleum and how to break the spell. Between the palace and the crypt is a swarm of zombies, if that doesn’t make it challenging enough, the mausoleum has been warded and would take all night to breach.
The hall of mirrors ( the one that was enchanted to lead people to places ) has now been further enchanted, now when you enter you must also face your greatest fears, what fun!
Spirits and Demons are less in control of their powers during this event and will behave erratically.
The undead will ignore members of the coven of Asphodel, as well as any Terrors.
Anyone who’d like to transition their character to a Terror is welcome to have them die during this event, they’ll be brought back by the Asphodel.
This event will officially wrap up with its culmination on November 7th, with a hard stop on all event threads on November 14th.

The Unexpected Heroes of Innovation: How Everyday People are Shaping the Future
Innovation. It conjures images of Silicon Valley giants and research labs filled with white coats. But the truth is, innovation thrives not just in sterile environments, but in the messy, vibrant world around us. The most groundbreaking ideas often come from the most unexpected places, driven by the ingenuity of everyday people.
The Democratization of Innovation: From Gatekeepers to Grassroots
The internet has shattered the traditional model of innovation, where a select few control the resources and funding. Today, the playing field is more level than ever before. Anyone with a curious mind and an internet connection can access vast resources, collaborate with like-minded individuals across the globe, and turn their ideas into reality. Crowdfunding platforms allow brilliant concepts to bypass traditional gatekeepers and find funding directly from the public. Open-source software development empowers individuals to contribute to projects that benefit millions.
Think about it: the teenager who tinkers with code in their basement might develop the next revolutionary app that disrupts an entire industry. The stay-at-home parent with a passion for sustainability could invent a game-changing recycling technology that tackles a global environmental challenge. The retiree with a knack for problem-solving might devise a simple yet ingenious solution to a longstanding challenge in their community, improving the lives of countless people.
Everyday Innovation in Action: A Tapestry of Ideas
The stories of everyday people driving innovation are as diverse as the problems they solve. Here are just a few glimpses into this vibrant tapestry of ideas:
Citizen Science: From Backyard Birds to Distant Galaxies Apps and online platforms empower ordinary citizens to contribute to scientific research in a meaningful way. From monitoring bird migration patterns in their backyard to classifying galaxies through online platforms, everyday people are actively contributing to scientific discovery and expanding our understanding of the universe.
The Maker Movement: From Imagination to Invention The rise of 3D printing and accessible coding tools has fueled a global DIY movement known as the Maker Movement. Makerspaces provide a collaborative environment for people to turn their ideas into tangible products, fostering creativity and innovation at the grassroots level. Imagine a young student tinkering with a 3D printer, designing a prosthetic limb that is not only functional but also affordable for those in need. This is the power of the Maker Movement in action.
Social Entrepreneurship: Addressing Challenges with Heart and Hustle Everyday heroes are tackling social and environmental challenges with innovative solutions. From developing low-cost water purification systems to creating educational programs for underprivileged communities, social entrepreneurs are making a positive impact on a global scale. Take, for instance, the story of a young woman who designs and distributes solar-powered lamps in rural areas, empowering communities and improving their quality of life.
*Technology as the Great Enabler: Fueling Everyday Innovation
Technology plays a crucial role in supporting and amplifying the work of every day innovators. Here's how:
Cloud Computing: Democratizing Processing Power Cloud computing platforms provide access to powerful computing resources that were once the exclusive domain of large corporations. This empowers individuals to tackle complex projects that would have been impossible with limited local resources. Imagine a team of students developing a groundbreaking climate modeling application – cloud computing allows them to access the processing power needed to run complex simulations, making their research project a reality.
Collaborative Tools: Working Together, Virtually Collaborative tools allow geographically dispersed teams to work together seamlessly on projects. This fosters innovation by enabling individuals with diverse skill sets to come together and contribute their expertise, regardless of location. Imagine a team of engineers in different countries working together in real time to design a new prosthetic limb, leveraging video conferencing and collaborative design software to bridge geographical barriers.
Open-Source Knowledge Sharing: Open-source software development allows individuals to contribute to and benefit from a vast pool of code. This collaborative approach accelerates innovation and fosters a culture of knowledge-sharing within the tech community.

Culturally informed design: Unearthing ingenuity where it always was

Culturally informed design: Unearthing ingenuity where it always was
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pedro Reynolds-Cuéllar, an MIT PhD student in both media arts and sciences and art, culture, and technology (ACT), explores how technology and culture intersect in spaces often overlooked by mainstream society, stretching beyond the usual scope of design research.
A former lecturer and researcher at MIT D-Lab with experience in robotics, Reynolds-Cuéllar is an ACT Future Heritage Lab affiliate, a member of the Space Enabled Group within the MIT Media Lab, and a MAD Fellow who hails from rural Colombia, where resourcefulness isn’t a skill but a way of life. “I grew up seeing impressive ingenuity in solving a lot of problems, building contraptions, tools, and infrastructure … all sorts of things. Investigating this ingenuity has been the question driving my entire PhD,” he reflects.
Emphasizing the importance of cultural elements in how people collaborate, his work encourages a more localized, culturally informed perspective on technology design. “I am interested in investigating how technology takes place in geographies and spaces that are outside of mainstream society, mostly rural places,” he says.
At the heart of South America, Colombia is home to over 80 distinct groups of Indigenous tribes known to exist, each carrying unique customs, beliefs, and practices. This contributes to Colombia’s cultural mosaic and linguistic diversity, with more than 68 spoken languages. This meant plenty of opportunities for Reynolds-Cuéllar to engage with communities without trying to reshape or “fix” them, but rather to amplify their intrinsic strengths and amplify their voices.
“My colleagues and I developed a digital platform meticulously documenting collaborative processes when designing technology. This platform, called Retos, captures the invaluable social capital that blooms from these interactions,” Reynolds-Cuéllar explains. Born from a need to foster cross-pollination, the platform serves as a bridge between universities, companies, and rural Colombian organizations, enhancing their existing initiatives and facilitating processes such as funding applications. It received an award from MIT Solve and the 2022 MIT Prize for Open Data from MIT Libraries.

Designing with culture in mind
Reynolds-Cuéllar’s approach isn’t formulaic. “Culture is pivotal in shaping collaboration dynamics,” he emphasizes. “Reading about collaboration can make it seem like something universal, but I don’t think it works that way. This means common research methods are not always effective. You must ‘tune in,’ and build upon existing methods in the local fabric.” This understanding fuels Reynolds-Cuéllar’s work, allowing him to sculpt each project to resonate with a community’s distinct cultural context. At the heart of his doctoral research, he integrates Indigenous knowledge and what he calls “ancestral technology into design practices — a form of world-making (design) that primarily supports cultural cohesion, rooted in bounded geography and with a history that lives through collective memory. “I’m prompting designers, who may lack direct access to Indigenous scholarship, to recalibrate their design approaches,” Reynolds-Cuéllar articulates.
This appeal to look into multiple perspectives and methodologies broadens the horizons of conventional design thinking. Beyond designing things for a specific function or solution, Reynolds-Cuéllar looks at practices that also help maintain the cultural fabric of a place. He gives the example of weaving looms, which are not only the result of ingenious design, but also allow Indigenous communities to build artifacts with great cultural meaning and economic benefit: “When I work on the loom … I feel differently. I have access to a different state of mind and can easily get into a flow. I am building things where I can tell the story of my life within my culture. I’m making something that is meaningful for people around me, and I’m not doing it alone, we’re doing it all together,” adds Reynolds-Cuéllar.
Among his ventures, Reynolds-Cuéllar’s work with coffee farmers stands out. His projects in collaboration with these communities are all about empowering coffee farmers to refine their processes and gain agency over their livelihood and economic undertakings.
“The coffee industry in Colombia is intricate, with various layers influencing farmers’ lives, from bioengineered seeds to chemical fertilizers, and centralized roasting operations. It’s political and even philosophical,” Reynolds-Cuéllar states. Coffee farmers could sell the raw beans for a low price to the powerful Federación Nacional de Cafeteros (the National Federation of Coffee Growers of Colombia), but there are other alternatives to foster agency and self-determination. “We collaborate with coffee growing collectives, helping them to achieve consistency in roasting procedures, improve equipment designs, and set up packaging infrastructure,” which means farmers can produce higher-value specialty coffee which they can choose to sell directly to consumers. Reynolds-Cuéllar’s work creates ripple effects, bolstering autonomy and local economies.
Too many questions
Throughout his research, Reynolds-Cuéllar describes a turning point in meeting an Indigenous cultural and social leader: “We were collaborating with a group of fishermen on Colombia’s Atlantic coast, within an Indigenous community. Our initial curriculum mirrored conventional design methods. Yet, the leader’s insight shifted my perspective profoundly. It was the first time my methods were being challenged.” The encounter prompted Reynolds-Cuéllar to scrutinize his methodology: “This leader told me: ‘You guys ask a lot of questions.’ I started explaining the benefit of questions, and methods in the usual design jargon. He replied: ‘I still think you ask too many questions. We ask the most important questions, and then we spend a lot of time reflecting on them,” remembers Reynolds-Cuéllar. This shift underscored the realization that there is no such thing as universal design, and that standardized methodologies don’t universally translate. They sometimes inadvertently strip away cultural nuances, where they could instead cultivate their dynamic expression.
For Reynolds-Cuéllar, his participation in MAD’s design fellowship has been instrumental. The fellowship not only provided essential funding but also offered a sense of community. “The fellowship facilitated meaningful conversations, especially talks like Dori Tunstall’s on ‘Decolonizing Design,’” Reynolds-Cuéllar reflects. The financial support also translated into practical aid, allowing him to advance his projects, including compensating field researchers in Colombia.
Beyond academic pursuits, Reynolds-Cuéllar envisions writing a book titled “The Atlas of Ancestral Technology of Colombia.” More than mere documentation, this large atlas format would be a compendium of the myriad stories Reynolds-Cuéllar has unearthed, with illustrating images crafted in Colombia — visual representations from each culture, descriptions, and local stories about these artifacts. “I want a book that could counter some of the predominant narratives on design,” asserts Reynolds-Cuéllar. Through his work, Reynolds-Cuéllar already started to craft a blueprint for approaching design with cultural significance and intention, laying the foundation for a more inclusive and purposeful approach to technology and innovation.
