I'd like to discuss the elephant in the room. Why did we get zero Loumand sex scenes? We got hints and implications, but season 1 was pretty explicit. Do we think that that's a creative choice or something else is happening?

I'm glad I ended up ruminating on this for about a week because episode 7 & 8 really solidified my opinion on it.

I do wanna start by saying that it's very clear to me that there was supposed to be more explicit scenes between them. There has been some thoughts tossed around that censorship happened with the 9 pm timeslot (as opposed to the 10 pm timeslot of S1). I believed this hearing Assad and Jacob talk about the BDSM dynamic between Louis and Armand, but what really sold me on this was Production Designer Mara LePere-Schloop talking about the bedroom set and more specifically about their beautifully carved custom headboard. (If you're a production nerd like me or just want to know more about the design philosophy of IWTV I recommend giving the entire thing a listen!).

I think there are several reasons I think as to why they decided to leave any more explicit scenes on the cutting room floor but above them all is: you cannot separate Armand's sexuality from his abuse. I am really against pulling a "well if you read the books" card but reading just the first couple chapters of "The Vampire Armand" makes me understand so much about not only Armand as a character, but the care being taken to his adaptation. It's clear to me that alongside Rolin & Co.'s commitment to not watering him down to a one-dimensional villain they are also trying to not fall into Anne Rice's tendency to romanticize his trauma.

Sex and sexuality is not the same pillar of Louis and Armand's relationship it was in Louis and Lestat's and so I don't believe their story suffers from the lack of on-screen sex. But I also firmly believe that maybe we don't need to be slutting out the character who we literally just watched talk about how he doesn't remember his life before being sex trafficked. And even when he was "freed" he was still being repeatedly assaulted at the hands of, and under the eye Marius de Romanus. Like it is extremely important to remember that Armand's craving for dominion in his relationships is a manifestation of trauma that deserves the same level of care and depth given to every other trauma portrayed in this show.

I think people have gotten too comfortable calling IWTV a romance when it has always been Gothic Horror. Romance and sex are pivotal to the story but I have found the demands for sex scenes this season a bit absurd and also? unfounded? Loustat share more kisses on screen but there are two sex scenes and both are very plot relevant. I truly figured we were all in agreement that the eroticism of this show is found in the various displays of power, and the dynamics it creates and not the actual clapping of ass-cheeks...which also wasn't happening in S1 either. S2 does not suffer because of the lack of sex-scenes, but the likelihood if it suffering trying to make one work is

Thinking about this again bc imo this implies that Bill sees Ford and himself as the "main characters", which is SO interesting to me, because Ford clearly ALSO saw himself and Bill as the main characters before his character development

Lestat declaring confidently that armand and Louis can’t hurt him bcus he “has Akasha’s blood” is so unhinged and funny partly bcus he is fully aware, and direly acknowledges, that neither of the ppl he’s talking to know who akasha is, nor have any idea what akashas blood would entail. So he sounds like a straight dumb ass raving mad man when he says that 😭😭 funnier still that this causes both armand and Louis to falter through sheer power of how confident Lestat sounds 💀 “yeah u can’t hurt me haha 😈😈😈 I have the Mega Gods blood in my veins 🙏🙏🔥🔥 haha see that?? 😎😎 u don’t even know who the Mega God is lmao 🤣🤣🔥🔥 even more evidence as to why you are Nothing to me” and Louis and Armand r like well we have no fucking clue who the mega god is but this sounds pretty mf serious so let’s take a moment and reflect on our plan here. Amazing stuff 🙏even better that Armand and Louis also technically do in fact have akashas blood in their veins as well 💀 Armand through Marius and Louis through lestat, and lestat is fully aware of this and chooses to play that card anyway cuz like Louis and Armand don’t know that 💀💀

Still can't stop thinking about how agonizing it must have been for Lestat to stand up on that stage at the trial and lie about the early stages of his and Louis' relationship and twist the details to make Louis the pursuer and pretend like he didn't want him when the most essential fact of Lestat's life since the year 1910 has been wanting and loving Louis more than anything in the world.

And just... the fact that he was doing it—standing up there and speaking the twisted lines given to him by Armand and the coven—only because he was there to save Louis. The fact that his only mission was Don't Let Louis Die. The fact that they made him sacrifice his daughter to save his soulmate. Wield their love as a weapon in a last desperate attempt to make sure Louis keeps on living. No matter what, even if it meant Louis would never forgive him. Even if it meant Louis would always hate him.

Lestat just needed Louis to not die.

crazy how Lestat spent like, twenty years fucking a woman that he didn't even really like on a platonic level because he was so genuinely deranged that he was like, "well if my husband really loved me, he'd want me to fucking KILL her! and the fact that he hasn't explicitly requested that I murder this woman is proof that he actually hates my guts and is waiting for the soonest opportunity to rip my heart out and leave me." and Louis, who is equally as insane but slightly better at pretending that he's not, knows what Lestat is waiting for. and he wants Lestat to kill her too! but he could never ask, because he refuses to lose. lose what, who knows. and so for twenty years, he stows away in his coffin and repeats a nightly mantra of, "I want her dead I want her dead I want her dead I WANT HER DEAD-" and then he wakes up and is like, "of course you're welcome to see her, Lestat my beloved, I'm totally cool with this!" because he's a total liar.
