okayy so i’ve been wanting to do this since the album dropped and now i have a bit of time so i thought why not. this can be seen as a prologue to positions or you can read it on its own!! love you guys hope you like this <33

the writer’s retreat was supposed to be good for you - that’s what your manager had told you, anyway. she told you it could be a rebirth of sorts. though, you think she only sent you there because she didn’t want you seeing the social media roll out from your ex husband stepping out with a new girl only a month after your final court date.

after a week at the retreat, you had yet write something. sure, you had a few lyrics scribbled in your notebook - but nothing stuck. you felt like you were going crazy as you spun in the chair in the dark, empty studio room. there were no distractions, just you and your thoughts and you fucking hated every bit of it. sometimes you wished you could just remove your brain and start from scratch.

all you wanted to do was scream, and just as you were about to, the door swung open. you almost jumped out of your skin.

“oh my god! i’m so sorry. i didn’t mean to scare you, i thought it was empty.”

and there he was. harry styles. how had you been here a whole week and not noticed he was there?

“no, it’s my fault. i should’ve had the light on, my bad.” you breathed out, your heart still racing from the fright. ��you can have the room, i’m not really getting much done.”

harry flicked the light on, your eyes burned from being in the dark for hours. that’s when he saw your face properly for the first time. he almost choked on his next words but you didn’t notice. sure, he knew exactly who you were and maybe you had met in passing once or twice over the last decade. but there was something about seeing you in no makeup with your hair tied up and wearing an oversized jumper. you just looked so… real.

“ah, i know that writer’s block all too well.”

“it’s not even a block at this point. it’s like my brain is just empty. there’s so much i want to say but the second i try to write i just go completely blank. i mean, i’ve been here a week and i have maybe three sentences?” you sighed. “nice you meet you, by the way. i’m y/n. sorry that you’ve just walked into my existential crisis.”

harry chuckled as you extended your arm to shake his hand, introducing himself back.

“anyway, i’ll get out of your hair-“

“no, it’s okay! why don’t you show me those three sentences? i might be able to help.” he didn’t know why he said that, maybe he just wanted to get to know you more.

how can i tell if i’m in the right relationship?

“this is so embarrassing, i can’t believe i’m showing harry styles my worst work yet.”

“hey, it’s not bad at all. you just need to figure out where you wanna go with it. these things take time.”

and with that, you spent hours in that room just talking about everything and nothing. you couldn’t bring yourself to bring up your divorce, though. of course, harry knew about it - everyone did. but it didn’t feel like he was walking on eggshells with you. it just felt normal.

“do you ever think about it,” you asked randomly, “the world ending?”

“yeah, sometimes.” he spoke. “but i think about who i’d want to spend it with more.”

you looked up at him, and he looked at you like he already knew the answer.

that night, you finally wrote the song and you felt like you could breathe for the first time in months.

One part of me is like:

“Shit. Two minutes and forty one seconds for an extended version? That’s wild.”

Maybe it’s because I come from a time when songs were a little longer and I naturally expected more. But I have to be grateful and trust in her artistry, you know. Those two minutes and forty one seconds could do more for me than a four-minutes or five-minutes song. Some people don’t need that much time to express their emotions successfully.

I’m genuinely glad my favorite song from the album is getting a little extra love. And, even if you aren’t an Arianator, you may come to enjoy it too. Cuz it’s really good, girl. Give her a try. I’m sure she can reach you because Ari has that kind of talent that’s worth giving it a chance. ;)

intro (end of the world): you’re dramatic. not as a bad thing but as someone who feels a lot. you remember every detail and you make yourself a lot of questions like Do they actually like me? Are they just being nice? Are they faking it? Did i do something wrong? Are they judging me? Am I the only one? Do they actually love me? honey BREATHE

bye: you’re used to suffering, so used to that you don’t even suffer anymore! you prefer to put your energy in things that are worth it. if it’s not good for you, you say ‘bye bye boy bye’ and don’t waste your time. you don’t repeat mistakes. you know your worth, and you’re strong for that ♡

don’t wanna break up again: you always want to keep the peace even if it means your silence. you cry alone to not bother anyone. you live in a constant fight between what you should do and what you want to do. you don’t want to hurt others ever, even if they have hurt you. you’re self codependent. you strongly believe in “right person wrong time” type of love. and you do in fact ‘spent so much in therapy’ as the song says:)

eternal sunshine: you believe that “you can fix them” (no). everyone hates lies but you HATE. LIES. if someone lies to you it’s over forever. i’m assuming that you had been cheated on in one of your relationships or it’s your worst fear. you’re ‘the first at saying sorry’ as the song says. you’re just looking for true love tbh. a little bit passive-aggressive but nothing too bad:) you’re the best type of person to be in a relationship with!

supernatural: your love is… intense… you like to let everyone know that they’re yours and you’re theirs. (a little bit possessive, nothing crazy) you love with passion. when you’re in love you don’t recognize yourself because of how needy and cheesy you become. and you got some sexy and flirty vibes!!!

true story: you're cautious. you hate to be involved in fights/discussions but ‘if they want you to play the villain you’re totally willing to’ as the song says. you’re a badass that isn’t scared of speaking out their mind. you hate drama and people who don’t have a life of their own!

the boy is mine: you’re a little shy and possessive. you think they’re going to fall in love with you without even speaking to them!!! (me) you know that you and them are made for each other even tho you saw them twice in your life.. definitely is hard for you to take the first step but you can take your time don’t worry! you usually like people that it’s the opposite of you and that’s what makes you want them even more….

yes, and?: life of the party. great vibes for sure! you’re the friend that your friends go to when they need advice. you never have been pretty confident in the past but you learned to love yourself and ‘be your own fucking best(friend)’. you always look for the light in dark situations. you protect your energy. you’re living your best life and you dgaf about what people think! congrats!

we can’t be friends (wait for your love): you love too deeply, so deeply that it consumes you. you feel like you been waiting for love your whole life ;( but you know that at the end of the day it’s just you and yourself ♡ you speak your truth always! and you hate when people get into your life. you wish they erased your ex's memories like the movie/music video.

i wish i hated you: lucky the people you have loved because you’re the purest soul ever!!! always wishing the best to the people who’s no longer in your life. no matter how much that person hurt you in the past you can’t seem to hate them! you love to think that not being together it’s “for the best” to keep your mental peace. you feel guilty about still caring for that person. but very deeply you know that you weren’t meant to be (even tho you wanted to)

imperfect for you: “let’s stay at home and watch a movie” kind of domestic relationship. you love that feeling of familiarity and intimacy that comes with having a relationship. you protect your partner with your life. as the song says you’re ‘anxious, fucked up, too much… messy, completely distressed’ but when you’re in love all of that thoughts and problems disappear. you love with the good and the bad. you don’t care if it’s complicated being with the one you love, you will do anything to keep that love.

ordinary things: you also like domestic relationships, the familiarity and intimacy that comes with it BUT you also like adventure. “let’s disappear together to a different continent and don’t tell anyone” kind of relationship. you like to have fun with your partner (even if it’s doing the stupidest things possible) you feel that time it’s not enough when it comes to them. the meaning of love to you is being the truest version of yourself with that person.
