why is The Social Network (2010) the most sexually charged movie I've ever seen.
It's literally affecting my ability to focus on class and in conversations. (i have to dissect this film for class and all I'm finding is homoeroticism. Im literally 10 years late but whatever.)
Okay first off, opening like 15 minutes. Cuts between girls at parties, doing drugs taking their tops off, he's in his dorm getting drunk, hating on his ex girlfriend on line, and comparing women to farm animals (like the piece of shit he is). It's supposed to be kinda... oh... look at him he's a loser he isnt out at parties like everyone else... but also this IS his party. This is pleasure. He might as well be taking ecstasy rn. Being a condescending asshole and showing everyone how smart he is, devoting his life to being behind a computer to prove it. (also the entire soundtrack is DOWN and DIRTY) Mark's motivations (besides being a smartass) seem to be girls and parties. I dont know just.... sex is like BAKED into the tone of the movie. I squirmed in my seat the whole time like an unwilling voyeur. (except the girls snorting coke off of each other that was awesome)
Okay that said. WHY IS THE MARK ZUCKERBURG MOVIE GAY. The share settlements could have been replaced with a divorce lawyer and I would not have noticed.

Mark is an asshole. This is the topic of the opening scene and the ending. The whole point is that He Is An Asshole. (I know the lawyer was like, 'You're not an asshole, you're just trying to be.' but like.... when he checked the math of the lawyer for no other reason to be condescending and petty? yea.... okay. DIVA-ING OUT!)
He's an asshole and Edwardo is his only friend. Edwardo keeps being his friend even though Mark is an asshole.

In the same scene Edwardo says he's scared of Christy, says she's psychotic and unpredictable. Later when she sets the scarf on fire, after getting jealous and treating Mark like one of Edwardo's side hoes, Edwardo tries to put out the fire of a relationship with both Christy and Mark (nahhhh bro ur gf and best bro are being parelleled... its sooooo over...)
On that note... when he first gets together with Christy? They make out and Christy goes to suck him off? At the same time the film points out that EDWARDO IS LISTENING TO MARK IN THE BATHROOM STALL NEXT TO HIM ALSO PROBABLY GETTING SUCKED OFF???? that is a WHOLE allegation

Something about the way these two points COULD have been used to help build their case but they don't, and they aren't exactly 'Harvard Gentlemen'.
Something about how on Edwardo says oops because he was just telling a story, not trying to open a new can of worms. He doesn't bring it up or use it for defamation because he was never angry about Mark's moral failings, he clearly doesn't mind those, he was angry over Mark not needing him. Or maybe ever lying about needing him in the first place.
And what does Mark say oops for? Sorry for bringing the chicken up? Sorry for not? Sorry for the possibility he started the rumor in the first place? Is he saying oops FOR Edwardo, for jumping to conclusions? Is he sorry for defending him?

This program, intended to be a motivational reading and writing program, was quick to install, thanks to the easy-to-follow instructions in the user's manual. This version was used on a standalone Mac LC 575 with 8MB RAM and System 7.1, but can be installed for multiusers on a network with or without a file server. The snazzy introduction, with its hip characters explaining "logon" from Quick-Time film clips, welcomes players into a television studio to be participants on a Jeopardy-style game show. Clear graphics and sound entice the player to stick around to see what happens next. When I first loaded the disc, I was momentarily stymied because I couldn't find the sound control panel. This program relies heavily on its sound, yet there is no entry for this in the index or in the troubleshooting section of the manual. In fact, other than the installation directions, I found the manual a little difficult to maneuver. I finally found the volume control panel under the section called Control Room Options (referring to the control room of a TV studio). If this program is to be used in a quiet library or classroom, and especially if it's networked within the same room, headphones are a must.
To play this game, players must follow three simple steps: register by signing on, pick out a book that corresponds to the available titles in the collection and read it, and then return to the computer and play a game that asks questions about the book they've just read. Don't miss that one big prerequisite for using this program! In fact, in the detailed instructions in the manual under playing the game, Step 2 is "Read a book"! The titles that are included in the starter kit are all well-known contemporary classic novels for the middle school by such authors as Lloyd Alexander, Avi, Robert Cormier, Katherine Paterson, Beverly Cleary, and Lois Lowry. Questions pertaining to each of the books are accessed by loading one of five discs. The material sent with the software offers 15 more discs (five titles per disc) available for purchase, covering the major young adult fiction for this age group.
After the player chooses a book and grade level, the game show host, Jack Patterson, pops out on video and leads the contestant through several questions that quiz the player on her/his knowledge of the story. Each game randomly uses 36 possible questions. Correct answers are cheered. If a student answers incorrectly, the right answer is given and explained. Players have the option to compete against themselves or other students. At the end of a game, a final score is tallied. High scorers can add their names to a top ten list.
Once a student has registered onto the program, all scores will be stored and tallied. The program is set up so that only the software administrator (called the Station Manager) has access to all student records and game settings. Different teachers (called Producers) can be signed onto the program and both have access to the Control Room, which provides for various customizing features and preferences of the program, such as review of questions, students' average scores, and setting grade level. There is a pause feature so that questions can be discussed at length by teachers and students.
For players, the game is fairly easy to use. There are clear directions on how the questions, both printed and read aloud, are to be answered. Players have the option to earn bonus points by answering a fill-in-the-blank question instead of multiple choice. There are several types of questions (literal, inferential, hypothetical, dialog, and writing technique) covering several categories including details about the plot, characters, setting, theme and tone. Students who don't read the book carefully or for detail will have that reflected in their scores.
The promotional material claims that this program motivates reading through fun, riveting activity, promotes student reflection, fosters whole language methodology, and promotes higher-order thinking skills. The type of questions asked, the inviting format and game show enticement will achieve the goals to some extent, but the student will still have to make that giant first step to read the book. Reading enrichment, remedial education teachers, and tutors will find this a useful program, too, in designing an individual learning plan.
The toll-free number offers a voice-mail menu of options for connections, one of which is a separate technical support number. One attempt at this number provided cheerful, courteous responses; the next time it was busy. When I had a serious technical question, I was on hold for 15 minutes but had my questions answered easily and quickly. An inquiry about information on this product resulted in an almost overnight delivery of more promotional material. There are several types of questions (literal, inferential, hypothetical, dialog, and writing technique) covering several categories including details about the plot, characters, setting, theme and tone. Students who don't read the book carefully or for detail will have that reflected in their scores. Reading enrichment, remedial education teachers, and tutors will find this a useful program, too, in designing an individual learning plan. Recommended.

Middle School: Literary Quiz Show
That's A Fact, Jack! Read is a new series of 45 CD-ROMS designed to quiz kids on classic books typically covered in upper elementary and middle school reading curricula. Each CD covers ten titles pertaining to a common theme, tailored to a given grade level. For example, "Discrimination and Prejudice in America" (Disc 33), for grades 6-8, explores such novels as The Witch of Blackbird Pond and Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry. Students first read one of the books individually (the books are not included) and then take one of the fast-paced quizzes at the computer. A noisy narrator reads all the questions and answers aloud--both a strength and a weakness, depending on what your students' needs are. Although the questions are all multiple choice, they often do require some higher order thinking skills, and the text is clear and easy to read. Feed-back is instant:
When students make an error, explanations of the correct response are offered. Also, progress reports can be printed out.
The presentation is right on target for upper elementary and middle school kids, and there are single- and multiple-player options. You can modify the quizzes, but you can't add your own questions; and you can adjust the timer, but you can't turn it off completely. Other weaknesses include a lack of detail on error analysis and some non-interruptible introductions. Still, the price is right and the quality is high. The individual purchasing options make this a viable choice for even single classrooms. Note that there are over 450 quizzes available in the entire series.

That's a Fact Jack/Read is a CD-ROM quiz program for grades 3-10 to help access the reading comprehension of literature books students have read. The series, from Tom Snyder Productions, is made up of 45 CD-ROM programs covering 450 of the literature books teachers and students often choose for classroom reading. Each CD-ROM addresses a specific theme with review questions for 10 books that reflect the theme. Some of the themes include: Mystery and Adventure, Survival, Loyalty and Honor, Examining Values, Animal Stories, American History, The American Civil War, Discrimination and Prejudice and others. The Mystery and Adventure CD-ROM for grades 3-5 includes such classroom favorites as Tuck Everlasting, Stuart Little and The Whipping Boy.
Interactive game show. That's a Fact Jack/Read uses a game show format to review reading comprehension. An audio M.C. reads the questions and answers during play. All questions in the basic quiz mode are multiple choice and cover literal, inferential, hypothetical, dialogue and writing technique types. In the Bonus Round, students play Use It or Lose It which gives students a statement from the book selected and five points of evidence, or events in the story and students must decide if the evidence supports the main idea in the statement.
Game play can be individual, small group, or classroom mode. One, two or three players can compete in individual mode. I like the discussions that occur when I let students play against each other. Individual scores can be recorded, but the discussion is much livelier!
One of the components that sets this program apart from others that offer quizzes on books students read is the Classroom Mode. I love the possibilities this quiz mode offers for motivating student reading and reinforcing Read Aloud books. Classroom Mode lets you go through the Multiple Choice Quiz game or the Use It or Lose It game with a book the whole class has read to stimulate discussion and go over ideas in the book. The pace is quick and the teacher has control of the questions selected.
My favorite-and the favorite of my students-is Use It or Lose It. My students use more critical thinking and are motivated to analyze a book as they try to figure out points of evidence. As each point is brought up, the teacher can click on the Why? button after each class response to get an audio explanation of why the point of evidence supports the main idea or does not support the main idea. The same feature is also available for the multiple choice game format.
I also love the features of the quiz format that allows students to select a game time of 10, 20, 30 or 40 minutes. This makes it possible for all students to finish a game in the scheduled time. Another positive feature is the immediate feedback; as each question is answered, an explanation is given for why it is correct or incorrect which relates directly to the content and events in the book.
Administration tools. Selecting play options is easy. The teacher can set up classes, divide classes into teams, read and print student reports with scores, and review the questions and answers, or even omit a question from a quiz. Game Play options can be set to keep records, allow student replay, pause, or lengthen time for answering questions from 15 to 25 seconds.
Extensions.
A supplemental guide gives writing and discussion extensions for each book. Opinionnaires are statements of belief that relate to the themes in the book. These can be used to spark discussion or writing activities. Personals are open-ended questions for getting students to do reflective writing or relate the story events to their own lives.

Description: That's a Fact, Jack! is a motivational reading program that tests higher-order thinking skills in a television-game show environment. After reading a specific book, students can test their reading comprehension and understanding by playing against the computer or against multiple contestants. There are 60 different title discs, and each one features five award-winning or notable books that share a common theme. For example, the theme of title disc #5 has to do with how people adjust to life's big changes and challenges, and the books that illustrate this theme are Cages, Mr. Henshaw, Cracker Jackson, Strider, and Number the Stars. The theme of title disc #3 is about traveling into new and uncertain worlds, and the books chosen for this disc are A Wrinkle in Time, Maniac Magee, The Indian in the Cupboard, The Whipping Boy, and The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. The recommended reading levels for the books on any one disc may have a range of 2.5 grades.
Reviewer Comments: Installation: I tested the program on a Mac 575 with 8 MB of memory and on a Power Macintosh 7600/120 with 16 MB of memory. You will need to read the instructions in the manual before trying to install the program. I also tried running the program without limiting the extensions on the PowerMac and did not have any problems. There are three options for installing: single-user, multi-user without a file server, and multi-user with a file server.Installation Rating: A
Content/Features: Similar to the familiar Family Feud program, That's a Fact, Jack! is hosted by the animated and appealing Jack Patterson. Each game show covers material from one book and is intended to serve as a measure of reading comprehension. After using their password to gain entry to the program, students select a book title and indicate whether they would like to have fill-in-the-blank questions, which offer more points, or multiple-choice questions. The questions cover a range of categories, and their level of difficulty increases with the proportion of correct answers. And, while points will be subtracted from a team's score if they select the wrong answer, their total can never go into negative numbers. If they do not complete the game successfully, they have two other chances to do so. Depending upon how the teacher has set up the program, students retaking the test may or may not have the same questions.
To get the most from this program, you should take the time to read the manual cover to cover and to experiment with the program. In keeping with the format of a television studio, teachers can use the station manager and the producers to control the settings of the program; you can limit the number of times students can retake the test, set the maximum time limit for completing a test, control the number of questions, select the questions, or establish the number of points required to play in the bonus round. You may customize each of these options or select from among the four templates that the program provides. Whatever your choice, you make these selections before introducing the program to your class. When students sit down to log in with their assigned password, they will need to know which television producer is their teacher's alter-ego and will take them to the game show that has been customized for their use.
Teachers will like the format and nature of the questions. Each game show contains 36 questions that cover four themes within the book. The types of questions fall into five categories: literal, inferential, hypothetical, dialog, and writing technique. The report form for each student will include the test date, book title, reading level, sophistication level, number of questions, types of questions, score in the bonus round, and final score. Ease of Use: This program is easy to use if you read through the manual ahead of time and impossible to use it you don't; I have a colleague who will testify to that. The only part of the program I found to be a little awkward involved the printing options; although you can print out all of your students' scores, each one will be on a separate page. Product Support: The easy-to-read manual has large print, many illustrations, and three main parts: Getting Started, Playing the Game, and Control Room Options. Recommendation: At first, I thought the price for this program was too high, especially when compared to programs such as Electronic Bookshelf or Accelerated Reader (a program my school currently uses). However, I have changed my mind. Although there are fewer titles per disc, the presentation style and types of questions make this program shine. The game show format was very popular with our students, and even led to a highly-motivating rivalry between two of our classrooms. Such team play would be further enhanced by Follett's Sidekeys ($395), a device that allows students to buzz in from their desks rather than crowding around one computer. If your budget will allow it, I think this is an excellent reading-motivation tool that is well worth the money. Outstanding--a "must" buy!

That's a Fact Jack is a motivational CD-ROM reading series featuring a variety of CD-ROM discs, each with five stories. Jack Patterson is the friendly video game-show host who guides students through the stories in a highly interactive format. Patterson tells students the category for questions that are asked. Students accrue points throughout the game for correct answers.
That's a Fact Jack does not just ask yes or no questions. Students must understand the context of the stow and use creative thinking to answer the questions. Using the "side keys," or buzzers, classes can also play in teams. Each team has a captain and only the captain can buzz in with an answer. This CDROM is challenging and fun, promoting creativity and teamwork.

UMass Course Experience: Spring 2021
This semester, I took my two courses at the University of Massachusetts Amherst (just UMass from here on out). The specific courses were computer systems principles (COMPSCI 230) and introduction to the C programming language (COMPSCI 198C). These courses together replace microprocessors and assembly language (CSC 231) which is the systems core course required for the computer science major. In some ways, this was the perfect semester to take a Five College course as I didn’t need to factor in travel time. However, I also didn’t get the full experience as the courses were remote and asynchronous. My initial motivation for taking a Five College course was to deal with some scheduling conflicts. These conflicts became a nonissue when I decided not to take French this semester. You can read more about my decision to not study abroad here. I took these specific courses because Smith’s equivalent course is only offered in the fall and given my interest in systems taking the core systems courses sooner rather than later made more sense than a random computer science elective.
My use of the past tense in reference to my UMass classes is actually appropriate as I have completed all of the coursework. In fact, I finished COMPSCI 198C before the Smith semester even started. I know that sounds sort of crazy, and it is, but it’s also not as crazy as may you think. Specifically, the UMass semester started two weeks before Smith’s and COMPSCI 198C was a one-credit self-paced course that opened up even earlier. That said, finishing the course in about a week and a half was no walk in the park and amounted to over a full-time job. (This was also on top of my French class and other work I was doing during interterm which you can read about here). While I had the entire semester to complete COMPSCI 198C, I  wanted to finish it early so that I wouldn’t have to worry about it during the semester and so that I could feel fully prepared for the COMPSCI 230 for which it was a pre/corequisite. To be totally honest, for a one-credit course, COMPSCI 198C was a difficult and time-intensive course. I’m glad that I managed to finish the course before the Smith semester because it would have been too easy to put off the work given the lack of hard deadlines. On the other hand, if I hadn’t worked through the class so intensively I don’t think it would have been nearly as time-consuming. Namely, I would have taken more breaks and been able to return to my code rested and with a fresh perspective. Furthermore, I would have been more likely to get help.
COMPSCI 198C was broken down into 12 modules and was pass/fail. (It did take the course seriously though because I actually wanted to learn the material). Each module had a specific topic and contained readings, pre-recorded lectures, a quiz, and a programming challenge. As for course content, we learned about data representation in C, pointers, dynamic memory allocation, structs, and more. Going into the course, I did have some background in C from Harvard’s CS50x. (You can read my full review of that course, here). The most fun component of the class was definitely the programming challenges. (It was also the most challenging and at times frustrating component, but that’s how you learn). The challenges were graded by computer (via an upload to Gradescope) which allowed for immediate feedback. The challenges included detailed documentation and some starter code. 
COMPSCI 230 was also asynchronous but released material on a weekly basis (9:00 on Monday mornings). The one synchronous component was the weekly lab which for most students took place over Zoom. The weekly coursework consisted of readings, lecture videos, and short lesson quizzes. Fortunately, all of the readings for this course were provided free of charge as pdfs or websites. Because COMPSCI 230 is an introductory course, we didn’t go crazy in-depth into each topic. At the same time, we covered a lot of material and there were a ton of details to pay attention to. Part of the reason we were able to cover so much material is that it was mostly conceptual and thus we didn’t spend half of the class going through example problems like you would in a math or engineering class. As for course content, we learned about processes, threads, and basic computer architecture. We also learned about signals, pipes, and network communication.
We also had a one-hour weekly quiz that we could take any time between noon on Friday and the end of the day on Tuesday. While I did the other coursework during the week and usually took the quiz on Friday afternoon, you could technically do almost everything over the weekend. To read more about a typical week of my spring 2021 semester, click here. In addition to lecture material, we had a total of six projects (and associated project quizzes). These projects involved systems-level programming and were a lot of fun to work on. Like the COMPSCI 198C programming challenges, most of the projects had starter code and were graded by an autograder on Gradescope. The first project introduced us to debugging with gdb. Our last project had us write a client program that communicated with a server to solve math problems. Other projects included a bank simulator and a cache simulator.
While five credits worth of classes is far from representative of an entire university’s courses, it’s only fitting to try and compare them to what’s offered at Smith. This is also highly unscientific as my UMass courses were asynchronous and during a pandemic. (It is worth noting that the vast majority of UMass’s other spring courses were synchronous). The first main difference is shear course size. Specifically, COMPSCI 230 had 316 students and an entire course team. At Smith, our equivalent course (CSC 231) is capped at 30 students. (The largest class I have personally taken at Smith was game theory (ECO 125) which had 73 students). The COMPSCI 230 lectures were by the actual professor, but the lab sections and most asynchronous help were from teaching assistants. With this large class size and the asynchronous format, there was little chance to get to know my classmates and professor. (I did join a Discord with a few classmates, but that was fairly focused on course material rather than general socialization). There was also an official discussion board on Piazza to ask questions (to be answered by other students and/or the instructors). Communication with the instructors (the professor and the TAs) also took place on Piazza with private posts. In fact, the only time I ever emailed my professor was before the course to get the syllabus to submit to the registrar’s office. Despite not knowing us as individuals, my professor clearly cared about us as individuals and about our wellbeing. At Smith, it’s the norm for professors to genuinely care about their students and about teaching. From reading posts on Piazza, I got the clear impression that my peers didn’t feel the same level of support from their other professors. The course size also meant that most everything was graded by computer. The autograder for the projects allowed for partial credit, but the quizzes didn’t allow you to explain your answer. There were a few quizzes that had somewhat ambiguous questions that were dropped from the quiz. This got a bit annoying if you had gotten that question right, but had gotten some others wrong. In a smaller class, the question would probably be kept in and if a student raised an issue they may be able to argue points back just for themselves. 
All in all, I had a positive experience taking COMPSCI 198C and COMPSCI 230 at UMass. With that said, I definitely wouldn’t want to have an entire schedule worth of 300 person asynchronous classes. Even though I didn’t have to take these courses this semester, it’s really nice going into my junior year having completed all of my computer science core classes. Furthermore, I should be well prepared for future systems classes including digital circuits (EGR 390dc) next fall which has either EGR 220 or CSC 231 as a prerequisite (and I will have both by the end of this semester).

Introduction
Did you recently receive a demand letter from a law firm asking you to submit to a voluntary software audit of your company’s computers, servers and laptops? If so, like many companies’ you may be asking “how did they figure this out.” This is a question just about every company asks me when they call for a free initial consultation.
Here are some of the top ways that I believe Autodesk might have found out that your company is or was using software illegally without the proper licensing proof for each copy installed. This is not an exclusive list, but these are some of the top theories we have explored in my experience as a software licensing lawyer having helped many different types of companies across the United States in licensing audits with Microsoft, BSA, SIIA and other vendors, and with Autodesk audits initiated by the Donahue FitzgeraldLLP law firm that handles many of these cases.
An “informant” told them your business is not properly licensed.
This I would say has to be the number one way Autodesk might learn of software piracy, in my opinion. So many of the copyright cases I handle deal with a recent firing of CFO, CIO, employee, or IT director, (sometimes when the company fights unemployment insurance claims), or other type of “whistleblower” cases where someone has first hand personal knowledge of the servers, networks and computers within a company, and felt then need to report illegal usage by a various departments of an architect, engineering or design firm.
As a software attorney, we try to find out what the “source of the audit” is, although pursuant to both the software alliance (BSA) and the SIIA policies, these trade organizations will guard this information closely and not reveal the name or identity of the informant unless the case goes to litigation. Autodesk has a similar policy of NOT DISCLOSING INFORMANT INFORMATION or the substance of any reports or declarations they may have received. Nevertheless, we know this is one of the main ways they will find our your business is using unlicensed software.
Click here to see one software alliance anti-piracy advertisement I ran across touting informant rewards up to one million dollars. Naturally, ads like these will draw some interest from those employees who have 'one foot out the door' and suspect corporate widespread piracy.
Someone at your company illegally downloaded software on file sharing websites such as Bittorrent or Kickass Torrens and used “crack codes” or “crack tools” to access their products
This is another way that can come up during the audit process. As copyright counsel, I might be told “ask your client about their use of “crack codes” or “key generators” to access our products.” This is a not-so-subtle “hint” that Autodesk might have knowledge of downloading illegal software on P2P (peer-to-peer) files sharing websites like bittorren and may involve illegal software cracking tools. These cases are seen as very serious to any software company that is pursuing an investigation, and depending on the levels of infringement, there are possible criminal copyright implications that can arise, and a possible referral to federal authorities. In most cases, however, the alleged copyright infringement can be resolved CONFIDENTIALLY and civilly without resort to United States Attorney General’s office, the FBI, CIA, Postmaster General or other federal legal authorities.
You posted a job posting looking for a CAD technician and when Autodesk looked up your company they did not find any licensed registered software.
There are other ways your company may find itself on the radar of IP counsel for major software companies like Adobe, Microsoft, and others. Another example can be where your company recently posted a job ad or “help wanted” ad on major job websites such as Monster.com, Indeed, Craigslist, Career Builder, Job.com or others. If you are posting an ad for your “growing architecture firm” or “expanding our engineering department” and the ad seeks persons skilled in AutoCad or any of the other products listed below, this would seem to suggest that your company is already using the software (sometimes it is a student version or trial version).
It is not clear to what extent Autodesk is looking at these ads, if at all, but we have had several recent cases where clients have told us “it had to be that CAD job posting we recently posted.” This is another way we believe they may find out your business might be using illegal software, and it appears this could be one ground which can trigger one of their attorneys sending the “software audit demand letter.”
Note, the audit is normally considered to be “voluntary” but for most companies it does not always feel that way. Sometimes a client may be read the riot act and be told they are risking a willful copyright infringement case with damages or penalties in the amount of $150,000 per infringed title. Most cases can be settled privately at far less than this amount, yet it is the risk that goes with willfully infringing a software vendors products. Your social media profile on LinkedIn shows you being an expert in products such as Autocad, LT, or Revitt, yet there is no proof of licensing any versions of their software
This is another variation of the job-posting discussed above, except in this example, perhaps your design firm is touting its credentials in “CAD Design” on an employees, or owners social LinkedIN page. In fact, one Autodesk lawyer told me ‘check your Clients linked in page, he is touting all his experience in Revitt or Autocad, but we see no licensed copies.’ These are the types of cases that can also trigger an audit demand letter from the Donahue Fitzgerald firm.
An IT “consultant” installed software on your networks and then reported you to seek a reward
This is another variation of the informant scenario (discussed above), but this may involve a “software vendor” or IT “contractor” actually installing bootleg software and then reporting this to the Business Software Alliance, or Autodesk. Again, we cannot confirm this, but this has been the subject of several discussions with our Clients that suspect the consultant they hired off Craigslist or Angie’s List sold them software at an extremely low price, and then may have turned around and reported the company months later. This is simply one theory that has surfaced.
You submitted a “crash report” to Autodesk and they found out your company is not properly licensed as a user.
Sometimes, if your engineering company or architecture firm is using Autocad, the software will “crash.” For example, when switching tabs, drawing lines, copying and pasting things, or zooming.
This will generate a “crash report” that could be sent to Autodesk. The same thing happens with Microsoft software. Some companies use a 'phone-home' technology to report back software installations on your network. They claim the EULA you (clicked) 'I agree' to authorized them to monitor installations of their software on your computer networks.
Click here to see an example of a software crash report page. These reports can basically send a signal to Autodesk, and the ping may cause someone to find out your IP address and other information, and lead Autodesk to investigate whether or not the software is properly licensed. If true, this is yet another way you may find yourself preparing to respond to a licensing verification audit that seeks your company to affirmatively prove that it has properly licensed their software (by showing proofs of purchase for all software being used). We have helped companies across the United States handle these investigation letters that implicitly threaten potential civil liability.
Note: We have discussed on other blogs how company officers and directors could potentially be held liable in these types of cases. Again, many times this will not become an issue if the case is handled and settled privately, as many are.
A authorized reseller or SAM (Software Asset Management) person may come to your office, notice shortages and be obligated to inform Autodesk per their agreements.
This is another one that we believe has surfaced before, again, not verified but something one Client we had believed happened. You invite an authorized representative to come to your office, and they notice Dell or HP computer that your company purchased OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer), but the representative notices you are running unlicensed versions of Autodesk, 32 or Revit. If they report back, you might get the 'love letter' from Autodesk asking you to engage in an audit, probably more likely if you never moved forward to purchase any software after being notified of same.
TIP: Remember with the OEM you want to make sure your receipts note that you purchased not only the HP or DELL laptop or computer but ALSO purchased software. Usually this is more of a Microsoft issue (with the Word, Excel Office products) than anything else.
You foolishly posted on their website or another tech support website (message board) seeking help with the product and they look you up and find out you are asking for help with a product you don't even have licensed.

What to do IMMEDIATELY when you receive a letter seeking an audit of your business
It is important to know your software audit rights. The first and most important thing to do is to not talk to anyone else and call a lawyer. You will want to have your letter reviewed by experience IP counsel.
Do not immediately run out and delete software. If your case goes to court, showing deletion of software could help them prove their case.
Do not immediately run out and try to buy software hoping that will make the situation go away. Usually, that will not help and they will still be seeking infringing and past use penalties.

September 2020 Autodesk update: Autodesk is continuing to audit current customers (contractual audits they call them), and may try to force you to install their Scan Win software. I will typically ask them Show me proof of the agreement, who signed it, and how Scan Win is required. I do not want to risk running third party software on my clients networks unless (a) it is required and (b) they agree to indemnify for any bugs, viruses, or harm caused to my clients computers, laptops, and servers. This is general information only.

Layers: It is recommended design only in layer 0. The CAD symbols created entirely in layer 0, adopt the current layer of the drawing in which they are inserted. This condition allows greater control of the entities that make up the block, allowing to define the colors, thicknesses, and line types more quickly and efficiently. And avoid overloading the drawing with layers.
Base point: At the moment of its creation, specify a base point that belongs to the block.
Inheritances: Be careful that when we insert a block we are adding to our drawing all the text styles, line type, units and layers that the block has.

An Introduction
Three things I want to tell you about me:
1. I am studying law in my second year. I have become disillusioned by law school and the legal profession for many, many reasons. I still love the law. I just don’t think that I want to work in it in its present and foreseeable state. I have 75 per cent of a mind to change to either computer science or (most probably) software engineering. But it’s kinda complicated since I’m on a scholarship. If I just get a verbal confirmation that I don’t have to pay back any of my scholarship money, then bye-bye, law school. You’ve been fun, but most of the shit you’re associated with I will never miss.
2. I don’t think I’m entirely a noob when it comes to programming. I learnt C++ in high school, but I’ve forgotten all about it. I dabbled a liiiiittle bit in Python and Swift last year. Who knows? This all might help me in my ‘journey’. (I kinda hate that word TBH, but IDK what other word to use.) I hope by August (that’s like four months from now) I will have become good enough to make something like the Tumblr mobile app (or any other decent, non-amateurish app that is professional-looking, easy-to-use and not clunky, i.e. sophisticated, as well as useful unlike -- no offence, really -- this game) or, better yet, good enough to even apply to Google and not be laughed at. Unrealistic? We’ll see.
3. I forgot what my third point was. That happens a lot, especially nowadays. I’m also very fickle. My interests change often, so who knows? I might get bored of this whole thing tomorrow and go back to trying to sell my soul to the law. Anyway, the third and last thing I want to tell you about me is that I don’t actually know why I wanna pursue programming exactly, which makes it hard when I do the ‘What is the Best Programming Language for Me?’ quiz -- the result of which I’m gonna share with you in my next post. But yeah, IDK why I really wanna do this, except that I want a new skill and programming is objectively a brilliant choice. Mark my words, by 2025 coding and computer science in general will be a core subject in schools. Knowing and being able to write code in like Python will be as basic as knowing the multiples of six and being able to read, write and speak in English. Wired thinks so too. But we’ll see. Anyway, IDK why I precisely want to learn programming, but I know that my current short-term goal is to master a language to the point that I can easily create an app in a week or less or however long it typically takes to make an app.
So that’s me. Stay tuned if you want [seductively a la sick Monica] some more of this. :*
PS, if you can’t already tell by now, my tags are inspired by Mr Robot episode titles. The show is seriously underrated, but that’s alright. USA will never cancel it.

What is coding?  
Let's start with the basics. In our digital age, literacy doesn't only refer to reading or writing anymore; it must also include a variety of digital skills. It is, therefore, important for children, as well as for grownups to be able to understand technology. Learning coding at a young age helps develop crucial skills like problem-solving, analytical thinking, and collaboration, which prove to be very important in the long run.  
So, what is coding?  
Coding refers to writing a precise set of instructions that a computer can understand to execute an action - creating computer programming code. Coding is, therefore, the primary method for allowing intercommunication between humans and machines. Just like in interpersonal communication, in coding, there are also several languages, so-called programming languages. However, the main principles behind all programming languages are very similar.
Computational thinking describes a way of looking at problems and systems so that a computer can be used to help us solve or understand them. Computational thinking is not only essential to the development of computer programs and understanding programming languages but can also be used to support problem-solving across all disciplines and sectors.

What is Code Week?
EU Code Week is an initiative that was started in 2013 by a group of ambitious volunteers, programmers, coders, teachers, and entrepreneurs – individuals who thought it necessary that the European public had a basic understanding of coding. The EU Code Week website and all resources and learning materials for students, parents and teachers on it are available in 29 languages. This means that no matter whether you have previous experience with coding or not, whether you are fluent in English or not, you can easily access the information you need to get you started.

#1 Unplugged activities
The lockdown forced the whole school community to rethink the way teachers and students work and learn. And what better way of learning than having fun at home with your children while trying out some coding activities? Coding@Home is a series of video tutorials, quizzes, puzzles, and unplugged activities to try at home or anywhere else, for that matter. You can also check out this video and its lesson plans if you want to organise an unplugged activity.

#2 The EU Code Week map
To participate in Code Week, you must register your activity on the codeweek.eu website. Activities organised for the EU Code Week differ widely in topic, scale, participants, organisers, and goals. For teachers, this can be a classroom lesson involving any innovative tool or approach – ask your students to create a game with Scratch to learn about Romanticism or create a quiz app to learn the capitals of different countries – up to you. Intranets and Extranets
Abstract
Intranets and extranets are powerful knowledge management technologies that can greatly affect the operations of an organizations. An intranet system is a tool to help with streamlined communication between employees, a central location for organizational information to be stored, and a great place for knowledge to be contributed and distributed. An extranet system is a network similar to an intranet, but it allows for authorized outside users to have access to the organizations knowledge and information. They both have their benefits and challenges, but important characteristics of both is that they are easily available, have good communication qualities, and operational performance. Not all organizations need to use an intranet and extranet system, but for those that do, they can promote a positive organizational culture by connecting all the employees.

Introduction
Knowledge management is the process of capturing, sharing and effectively using knowledge. There are lots of knowledge management tools and technology that include from content and document management systems to warehousing and data mining. This paper will focus on the knowledge management technology intranets and extranets. It will cover the advantages and disadvantages to each system as well as studies that show how each can affect organizational culture.
Intranets
An intranet is a private enterprise network that is used to securely share information and resources within a company. Most intranet systems for companies require a user to be on location and using the company network via the company’s wi-fi or wired connection. As technology advances people are able to connect remotely with a virtual private network (VPN). This essentially gives them access to their company’s wi-fi from any other location. To connect to a VPN, the most widely used software is Cisco AnyConnect. Cisco allows for users to connect from computers, laptops, cell phones, and tablets, expanding how people are able to connect to their organization’s network. To allow full access to one’s workstation remotely software such as VMware is used. VMware can essentially mirror one’s computer from a different device even if it is different operating systems like a MAC OS to a Windows OS. Each of these programs require a high level of security to access. Smaller organizations may only require two-factor authentication. Whereas larger companies have technology that gives a unique code every couple of minutes to even be able to access the steps of putting in one’s password.
Once a user has been given access to the organization’s intranet through any of the ways mentioned above, then they are able to use the intranet. There are some advantages and few disadvantages to mainly using an intranet for organizational information.
• Security: The most important advantage of using an intranet is the security it provides to the organization. If an organization only used internet-based software for their information storage and communication, it can be easily hacked by anyone with some effort and a minimal amount of skill.
• Ease of access to organization files: Organizations can have tens of thousands unique files across folders, thumb drives, and personal computers that once stored in a centralized shared drive can be accessed at any point. Also, by having a central place to store files, past files and versions can be pulled, reviewed, and revised to create new knowledge.
• Communication among employees: Organization’s intranets often include profiles of each employee. Those profiles will usually include their job title, employee id, photo and contact information. This system lets employees within the organization reach out to one another without having to come in physical contact and have to exchange contact information immediately.
Some the possible disadvantages for an intranet may include:
• Implementation Costs: Building an intranet can be expensive. A small organization may not have the means to implement an intranet network, or they cannot afford to train each user. Sometimes the content they have might not call for an entire intranet system, so the cost might not be beneficial in comparison to the actual need.
• Difficult to use if new: It is now common for large organizations to use an intranet, but for new or smaller companies that are starting an intranet network it could be difficult for current employees to successfully rely on the system. It becomes easier when new employees are initially trained to use the intranet network, and if it is the only thing available.
With the disadvantages and advantages of an intranet network listed, using an intranet looks like a great idea to use for a number of large organizations. A problem that could arise and that has been tested is the actual usage and quality of intranet software applications. Author Hareton K.N. Leung (2001)ran a study about the quality measurements of for intranet applications. The study used the Extended ISO model which included the following six characteristics and their sub characteristics.
• Functionality: Suitability, Accuracy, Interoperability, Compliance, Security, Traceability
• Reliability: Maturity, Fault Tolerance, Recoverability, Availability, Degradability
• Efficiency: Time behavior, Resource behavior
• Usability: Understandability, Learnability, Operability, Explicitness, Customizability, Luxury, Clarity, Helpfulness, User-friendliness
• Maintainability: Analyzability, Changeability, Stability, Testability, Manageability, Reusability
• Portability: Adaptability, Installability, Conformance, Replaceability
Leung used those metrics with the categories simple intraweb versus interactive, distributed, and enterprise intraweb. In this case a simple intraweb is a server that publishes static HTML pages, interactive contains tools to take input from the user before connecting to the server, distributed uses data sources throughout the organization with automated actions, and enterprise refers to using an applet that has its own connection to the server as well as external databases.
The full study consisted of comparing, ranking, and estimating costs of the metrics. Reliability, functionality, and efficiency were ranked as the top three quality characteristics. Within those, availability, accuracy, and security were ranked as the most important sub characteristics.
Once availability has been addressed and every member of an organization has their required access to the intranet network, the issue is having the users consistently use the network as a dynamic knowledge repository. Researchers Benedikt Morschheuser, Christian Henzi, and Rainer Alt did a study that looked into the use of gamification to increase engagement of the intranet system. They define gamification as using “video game elements in non-game systems and services…” (Morschheuser et al., 2015). Their main focus was on how to gamify a corporate intranet. It would start with a “check your knowledge” quiz with the option to skip the quiz and each participant was given the freedom to no longer participate in the study when they were tired. There were positive results from the study and the researches wrote, “This study shows that the usage of gamification elements can intensify the usage of a corporate intranet as information source for market information for financial advisors…This leads to the result, that not only more information was gathered (articles read), but also that those articles were read more carefully (number of correct answers and time spent per article)” (Morschheuser et al., 2015). This proves that small additions to an existing system that increases engagement and makes the user feel fulfilled can greatly improve the information learned.
Intranets are useful to organizations by being able to collect and share knowledge in a central location. It can streamline communication between employees, increase security of files within the organization, and aid further discovery of organizational knowledge.
Extranet
An extranet is a controlled private network that, with authorization, can be accessed by outside partners. Many businesses require collaboration with outside vendors or contractors that can rely on accessing some intranet tools and applications. An advantage that comes with having an extranet is improved customer efficiency. They are allowed to more effectively and freely communicate with partners and clients. An extranet also allows for better flexibility of information available to those outside entities. As expected with the implementation of most software, a disadvantage of an extranet can be the onboarding, training, and maintenance costs associated with it. Another disadvantage could be security. If one were to accidently gain authorizations to information that was not meant to be shared with outside entities, it could put organizational information at risk.
The key function of extranets is to essentially improve the relationship between the host organization and their clients or partners. One of the biggest indicators in how well an organization is doing in business is their customer satisfaction ratings. In their study “The Role of Extranets in Delivering Customer Service” authors Liz Lee-Kelley, Ailsa Kolsaker, and George Karadimas write:
“Within supply chain management customer service has long been recognized as a key driver of positive evaluation and future demand. However, metrics continue to emphasize operational flows, largely paying lip service to service outcomes. Emergent models of inter-organizational collaboration demand a relationship-based approach, of which service is a key component. Extranet technology emerges as eminently suited to the task with recent literature suggesting that companies employing extranets offer a better level of customer service than those who do not.” (2004)
This study that was done a while back shows the proven relevancy of how an extranet can improve positive customer service and satisfaction. The three characteristics in this study is very similar to the intranet studies. They are availability, operational performance, and communication quality. Of those the key components of great customer service were timeliness and quality of information. (Lee-Kelley et al., 2004)
Intranets and Extranets in a corporate office
My two summers of experience in a Fortune 500 corporate office showed me just how important the use of an intranet can be for a large business. How this company implemented this knowledge management tool will be defined in these categories: strategy, organizational culture and processes, management/leadership and politics, and technology.
Strategy
This company has been around for a long time and already has systems in place to effectively use their intranet system. Once you are employed you are given an ID to access your personal computer as well as the intranet applications once you are connected. They do not immediately allow for access to remote work. Each employee must complete the required trainings and be given access via their supervisors and the technical support team to be given a soft-token key. The company is very cautious about the safety of their information so they take every measure to ensure nothing can be shared to unauthorized users.
Organizational Culture & Processes
The culture at this company, because it is so large, differs between departments and teams. The B2B sales team and the experiential marketing team came with different sets of goals and challenges even though their overall goal was to get sales for the company. The sales team used a different and more dated form of online chatting while the marketing team preferred to meet in person or video chat. They both involved using the organization’s intranet application for their communication. In her article about intranet and organizational culture, Elisabeth Bennet writes, “Four thematic categories were discovered through inductive analysis. They indicated that the intranet, IAN, provided cultural learning opportunities through members (a) experiencing the wider organization, (b) recognizing and rewarding performance, (c) reinforcing organizational expectations, and (d) modeling corporate communication style.” (Bennet, 2014). Although the workloads and goals of teams may be extremely different, the intranet network defines the organizational culture and keeps them all connected.
Management, Leadership and Politics
The way this company implements their knowledge management is through a categorical and hierarchal structure. When it comes to access of files and content available on the intranet, all employees are able to freely browse and pull documents. The authorizations come with access to sharing organization knowledge. For example, each large department has their own knowledge and data manager as well as level 1-5 employees. This company tries to maintain an even relationship between level 1-3 employees and levels 4&5 seem to be on an island of their own. This company also makes it easy for lateral moves within the organization and when people move departments, they can take their knowledge with them or choose to not bring it into the new department.
Technology
This organization does not solely rely on outside companies to successful run their intranet and extranet services. This large company has their own cloud network and data centers that allows for even further security of its information. They use universal tools like MS Office, Skype, Q Messenger, Cisco, and VMware for documents, communication, and remote connection. They use their extranet system to allow the independent contractors they hire temporary and limited access to company materials.
These dimensions are specific to this specific large company with resources to implement their own intranet and extranet systems without it being a large cost for building and training of the networks. Other organizations may not have the means or even the need to have such an intricate intranet and extranet system.
Conclusion

For that reason, thinking outside of the box when conducting marketing strategies is essential. You don’t want to bore your customers, and you don’t want to get bored creating the same campaigns, either.

It can seem like interviews aren’t a home run idea, but, a properly optimized post with an industry thought leader grows your connections and provides helpful content to readers.
Check your network for thought leaders to interview — you might already have some awesome connections to work with. When you post and share the interview, make sure to tag the thought leader and the industry, so a broader audience has a chance of finding you organically.
3. Invest in a video series strategy.
Are you investing in your content marketing strategy? If you are, or plan to, and don’t yet produce videos or a video series, video content is a great place to start. In fact, 88% of marketers say video content gives them a great ROI.
Videos can be about anything related to your brand. For instance, maybe you’ve found that your audience responds really well to posts that spotlight colleagues. SEO is great for building traffic, but you can also use it for other areas of your business. For instance, keyword research can help you name new products so leads have a better chance of finding them.
As another SEO tactic that serves customers, you can use previous data you’ve collected to create a customer-centric strategy that caters to every part of their buyer’s journey. If you’ve noticed that you’re generating enough leads, but aren’t converting enough customers, SEO data could help you figure out where that gap is and how to fix it.

For instance, ROI data is one of the indicators that can tell you if you met your business goals. Additionally, analyzing what works for audiences and what doesn’t leads to better ad spending and content planning. Knowing how your customers respond to campaigns gives you better ideas of how to target them.
8. Consider micro-influencer partnerships.
Yes, influencer marketing is extremely effective — but it can also be extremely expensive. Maybe you don’t have the budget to plan a partnership with that influencer with 5 million Twitter followers, but what about the influencer with 8,000 followers?
The smaller audience of a micro-influencer means those figures have more bandwidth to engage with their audience, so you can expect to find a healthy balance between the number of followers one has and their engagement.
Plus, micro-influencers tend to have more of a targeted audience. For example, let’s say that you work for a software development company and you want to partner with an influencer for your newest gaming computer launch. Partnering with a celebrity influencer with millions of followers can earn you great exposure, sure — but only a portion of them will be interested in gaming computers.
Alternatively, if you partner with 3-4 micro-influencers in the gaming community, with 4,000 followers each, you still have the chance to be exposed to large, active audiences that are interested in gaming and gaming software.
9. Use forums to your advantage.
Online forums are platforms where users can ask and answer questions about various topics. At first, forums may seem as if they have little to no connection to marketing, but they’re actually a great brand awareness tool.
For example, let’s say you are a marketer for a web design company, and you’re scrolling a forum, such as Reddit or Quora. Eventually, you come across a question about the best tools to use for building a website. You can answer the question using your expertise and recommend your company, like this answer to “What’s the best video maker?”:

10. Quiz your audience on different platforms.
If your engagement with social media audiences starts and ends with comment sections, there’s so much more room to try out new growth opportunities. A quiz is one way to actively engage your followers.
Quizzes can take form in a blog post, an Instagram story poll, a Twitter poll, or in video. The quiz can be personality-based, a way for your audience to test their industry knowledge, or an introduction to your colleagues.

We know the basics of user-generated content, but are you thinking outside the box? If you lead social media efforts for a boutique fashion company, you could ask social media followers to style an outfit with one of your pieces — but the catch is that the outfit has to be only one color.
Some of these strategies aren’t new, but coming up with new ways to use them is part of knowing how to reach your audience. Some tactics, however, tend to be overlooked in favor of strategies that companies lean on for success.

The First iPhone Was a Landline

Phone lines, while not initially designed to transfer binary data, turned out to be a good enough way to do so—at least until the 2000s, that is.
From sending faxes to browsing the internet, people relied on effectively the same copper wires they used with Ma Bell-leased telephones.
While most of the personal tech evolved towards greater connectivity, landline phones mostly got better only at the ergonomics of calling and dialing.
But a few dared to be smarter—decades before smartphones found their way into our pocket.
Let’s talk about the evolution of the landline smartphone.
“Man-to-man, man-to-machine, machine-to-machine. In a short time, we’ve come a long way.”
– A line from “Challenges of Change,” a 1961 promotional movie from AT&T. Filmed on a height of Space Age anticipation, it shows “Data-Phones”—essentially, modems which could transmit data from punched cards, tapes, or even handwritten notes.
The earliest visions of smartphones didn’t anticipate that we wouldn’t communicate with our our voices
The AT&T video, filled with otherworldly visual effects, is delightful to anyone with an interest in history. At the same time, it shows why landline phones did not become the interactive mediums that smartphones later did.
While the narrator talked about changes in communication, scenarios from the movie showed data exchanges at best, as all meaningful interactions were done by voice and between humans. For example, before loading a punched card, a Data-Phone operator had to chat with the person on the other end of the line. Even in the age of rocket deliveries, shopping over a credit card-enabled videophone would be done by talking to a manager, as if one would in a retail store.
Admittedly, Bell engineers envisioned the future where people would only need to use the keypad to communicate with the source over a phone. A year later, Touch-Tone phones were presented to the U.S. public. While the speed of dialing was what AT&T promoted to customers, the DTMF (Dual-tone multi-frequency, informally known as “touch-tone”) signals generated by buttons allowed for menu navigation still used today.

How the United Kingdom failed to start an online revolution
By 1970, additional buttons on each side of a zero competed the 12-button keypad. Twelve buttons were what the UK Post Office had to rely on while developing Prestel, a nationwide service which let people use interactive services on a home video terminal.
Looking back, if there is one thing the UK engineers in the 1970s were fascinated with, it’s putting text on TV screens. In the United States, there wasn’t any notable progress in this field between a TV Typewriter electronic kit and the advent of home computers. The British, on the other hand, went straight towards transferring news, financial data, and TV guides—long before the booming popularity of the Internet, developing two coexisting ways to broadcast text.
One of these technologies, teletext, still lingers to this day across Europe. The text data, complete with color and pseudographics, is being broadcast alongside a TV signal—literally stuffed in between video frames. By design of the aerial transmission, teletext provides no interactivity, leaving the user to flip between different “pages” and occasionally revealing hidden text (the latter was mostly used to hide quiz answers).
Using a phone line instead allowed for higher transfer rate, more personalization (and billing for premium pages) and the ability to run remote software. Over several years since the mass introduction in 1979, Prestel accumulated several online banking, shopping, and booking offerings—even before the home computer boom which pushed operators to add software downloads and games.
Prestel used phone lines and required a phone-like keypad for navigation—surely, it was a fitting technology to build phones of the future around. That didn’t happen on a scale required to ensure Prestel’s success. Instead, the Post Office bet on marrying the network with TV—by offering not even set-top boxes, but Prestel-enabled TVs, priced at £650 at the very least. By contrast, France Télécom leased terminals for their similar Télétel network for free, making Minitel popular enough that it survived until 2012.

There was just a single Prestel phone—but boy, what a device it was. A wide unit with a small CRT screen and a QWERTY keyboard, STC Executel was an “intelligent display telephone” which combined voice and text communications with almost every productivity feature of its era.
The 1984 ad touted contacts book, calendar, ability to take notes and a “£500,000 in a national advertising campaign directed at top executives.” Being essentially an Intel 8085-based computer, it stored its software on a dictaphone cassette and could connect to a “secretarial unit” which allowed updating the data from another desk.
Just 10,000 Executel devices were sold, according to the designer David Leers. Only five thousand of them were sold, with the rest repurposed.
What might have saved Executel from being completely forgotten is its sleek, modern look.
Several Executels found their way in industrial design museums, although the plastics used for the keyboard turned out to be prone to yellowing. Just last week, one appeared on the YouTube channel Techmoan.

The most advanced landline phone of 1998 was literally called “iPhone”
A British oddity, Executel was simply unknown stateside. Still, the idea of a “computer phone” was a part of the social consciousness, and the manufacturers have toyed with it—if only by exploring. One of the most well-known prototypes was made by Apple by 1984. The “MacPhone” concept had a touchscreen for sending notes and signing checks, but, like other projects by Hartmut Esslinger, was only meant for finding new design elements.
But in the 1990s, the rising popularity of the Internet, a desire for a “post-PC” device and plain old technical progress paved the way for household devices which were meant to connect to the phone line. These so-called “Internet appliances” were promising easy Web and email access in a device which supposed to be as easy-to-use as TVs, music centers … or phones.
But while most IAs were simply low-end computers with a handset on top of it (I’m looking at you, Intel Dot.Station), there was just one which could actually replace a landline phone. And yes, it was actually called the iPhone.
Released in 1997, the original iPhone was made by InfoGear, a startup made from one of the National Semiconductor labs. Despite its big, full-VGA touchscreen and a slide-out keyboard, it looked like a contemporary phone. But on top of making calls, it could work with email and “full” versions of web sites—a feat achieved by off-loading some of the computational power to InfoGear servers.
It isn’t even the name or the web capabilities which made one think of the Apple iPhone, but the way all features were integrated. Just like on modern mobile phones, it was possible to dial a number from a web page by tapping it. The InfoGear’s phone did not only have a voicemail, but could transcribe the incoming messages to text.
While the phone made the international headlines, it was eventually forgotten alongside with the rest of the IA market—especially when InfoGear was bought by Cisco. The story took another turn when Apple released its iPhone—Cisco sued them for trademark infringement. Eventually, the two companies came to an out-of-court settlement.
(It wasn’t the last time Apple and Cisco discussed trademark issues. The iOS name, in fact, belongs to Cisco and is licensed to Apple—and might be the reason the latter doesn’t want people to use the phrase “iOS devices.”)

A British lord asked all users of his “superphone” to harass a journalist
To people focused solely on computing history, Alan Sugar is a businessman whose Amstrad micros and ZX Spectrum models contributed heavily to the UK home computer industry.
But to everyone else, he is a bigoted, homophobic billionaire in power who keeps his domestic relevance by hosting a TV show originally presented in the U.S. by Donald Trump.
And by the year 2000, his company had lost all that goodwill by releasing products that few people wanted. The PenPad PDA was slow, bulky and had a deteriorating rubber shell; the PcW16 desktop computer had a black-and-white screen and a processor from 1976 despite being released in 1995; the GX4000 game console was just a reason to sell cassette computer games on cartridges for a higher price. Eventually, Amstrad spun off its computing division and focused all its resources on Betacom, a communication company it had acquired. The result was Amstrad E-m@iler, the last attempt to push an Internet-connected landline phone to the mass market.

As a piece of hardware, it wasn’t much different from the InfoGear iPhone. What set it apart was the business model: instead of offering a monthly fee, Amstrad made the E-m@iler operate exclusively through a premium-rate phone number—and put another fee on top. “Sure, if I was organized and could send a day’s worth of emails and SMS messages in one sitting then the prospect of paying 12p for a single session online (plus the cost of the phone call) would be a small price to pay. But I’m not. And I can’t,” noted Tim Richardson of The Register in their 20002 review of a revised E-m@ailer Plus.
Later models of E-m@iler, like the 2004 E3 Superphone, added new features and new ways to get as much profit per user as possible. The ability to play ZX Spectrum games was added, although it was only possible to rent them—again, with paying per call and per service at the same time. The new color screen was used to display ads, with the phone periodically dialing home to download new banners (thankfully, on a toll-free number).
In 2011, the year Amstrad E-m@iler services were shut down, Sugar admitted that “it was slightly too late,” but noted that the subsidized lineup eventually recouped all the costs with services.
He definitely was not as accepting in 2001, though, when he noticed E-m@iler in the list of “techno-flops” in The Independent. The mild criticism (“not proving the success that Sir Alan Sugar had hoped” was all that was ever written about the phone) pushed Sugar to send a message to all 95,000 service subscribers, asking them to send an email to Charles Arthur, the newspaper’s tech editor.
“It occurred to me that I should send an email to Mr. Charles Arthur telling him what a load of twaddle he is talking. If you feel the same as me and really love your e-mailer, why don’t you let him know your feelings by sending him an email,” he wrote in a letter with Mr. Arthur’s address attached.
While the journalist had to cope with more than 1,300 letters—none of which were written by Sugar himself—some of them, eventually published online, exposed hardware faults, annoying bugs, and a helpline being directed to a premium-rate number.
“With this device we can charge advertisers, say, 10p for each customer to receive an ad they will see all day, and charge the advertisers £10 whenever a customer calls them by pressing the ‘services button.’ Or it may be that we give them the ad—free but they pay £25 whenever somebody calls—it’s a no-brainer.”
– Alan Sugar, positioning the E-m@iler as an “electronic billboard” to the readers of Marketing Week. Even considering that Internet phones were not as widespread as PCs, the ballpark cost per click sounds insane. However, as we’ve seen in the past, no one really knew by then how much web advertising should cost.
When asked to reflect on the 1997 iPhone, Robert Ackerman, a venture capitalist who pushed for the independence of InfoGear, said: “We were early into the marketplace. Ten years later, a very different story.” By contrast, Alan Sugar said he was ten years too late—and God knows which decade would be right for the Executel.
The world seemed to be fine with landline phones staying in their lane. But I can’t help but wonder how they would have evolved if the phone industry wasn’t controlled by the Bell System, the Post Office, or other nationwide monopolies. The original telecommunication industry, in my opinion, would have envisioned the connected world differently, based on the phone network paradigms rather than mainframe-terminal ones. Instead, manufacturers had to find faults in a PC-dominated world to make the case for their devices.
Smart landline phones still exist. Some VoIP (voice over internet protocol) and SIP (session initiation protocol) systems for business—arguably the only purchasers of landlines in 2019—are not only using the Web as an infrastructure, but can open web sites and use Android apps. But I think, when it comes to elegance, they pale in comparison to a device I noticed in Moscow Apple Museum.
After licensing the Newton technology from Apple, Siemens made the NotePhone, their own spin on the original MessagePad PDA. When used by itself, it’s functionally indistinguishable from the Apple device. What makes it special is the base with a handset which added phone and fax capabilities. Even back then, mobile computer expansions were nothing new, but this one seems like an integral part of the device while managing to be self-sufficient.
Maybe, instead of being either “smart” or “dumb,” landlines should have been more elegant in their connection to the world of computers.
