Please tell me you all have seen this story which has been gripping the nation of Ireland
It started with this report about a local "astro physics enthusiast" finding what he thought was a crater and meteor on a North Dublin beach:

Only for footage to be discovered of a bunch of lads digging the hole during the good weather the previous week:

I'm so emotional right now because I just binge watched the first season of Derry Girls and watched a few reactions to it on YouTube and it's so fucking nice to see the impact this show has had. Watching people who don't know jackshit about Ireland learn about the Troubles from this show was so satisfying to me because the show does such a good way of subtly showing the harsh stuff that's going on.
And it's also just fucking lovely to see a piece of Irish media be as popular as this is. I feel like there is so little irish media and the little stuff we DO have rarely gets any sort of recognition unless it's got some big famous American actor or actress in it. I personally feel like there is way too little irish media and it's really sad how most of the films and tv shows I've watched tend to be either American or British. I really wish there was more irish content made for Irish people and so I really am glad Derry Girls exists because it's a short show that has serious stuff going on around it but still manages to have an easy to view vibe (I really struggle with serious media so this show that's set during the fucking Troubles being an easy view was an amazing surprise).
I really hope the success of Derry Girls will lead to more Irish shows and movies being produced just for Irish people to enjoy, not for profit and not for it to be a global thing because I am honestly really tired of having to search far and wide for some irish content. Hell, I've been using youtube since I was a literal child and I still to this day only have one irish youtuber that I'm subscribed to and it's Jack fucking septiceye.
Idk I just really want to see more Irish content and hope the popularity of Derry Girls can open up the path for that but I'm honestly doubtful.

My cousin’s da died a few months back and at the wake I told him to go into the parlour and just say a few words for closure and he’s like any other Irish kid unable of expressing emotions so he goes in, looks at his dead da in the coffin and goes, “ye well, da?”

@polkadotrapier so in Ireland, funerals are a social event and you do not have to be invited to show up. It’s considered a gesture of solidarity and support to attend the funeral if a relative of any reasonably close acquaintance dies. If the grandparent of any of my classmates in school died for example, I would generally have attended the funeral (although that was primary school, which was small, maybe 30 kids in my class. In secondary school, where there were about 100 kids in my year, I wouldn’t have gone unless I was friendly with the person in question).
So yeah I’m joking a little bit about the hobby thing, but attending funerals is an important part of social life. My mam attended 3 funerals in one week this month (our next-door neighbour, the husband of another more distant neighbour and a cousin of hers that she didn’t really know). I can count on one hand the number of weddings I’ve attended, but I would be at a loss to tell you how many funerals I’ve been to over the years. Probably dozens though.

Well it's almost that time of year, folks.
Time for Irish tumblr to crawl out of the ditches and celebrate the collective insanity that is the Late Late Toy Show.

God the finale if Derry Girls fucking destroyed me. I don't know pretty much anything about the Troubles because when we first started learning it in school it was my final year and we literally went into lockdown after our first class on the subject. All I really know is from the little bits and pieces I've read on the Irish history subreddit (and obviously random posts online from strangers aren't the best sources of information) but God the finale just made me cry so fucking much when it was showing all that rela lfie footage especially the aftermath of Bloody Sunday. My eyes genuinely hurt from crying because it just hurts me so fucking much how many people were brutally killed and hrut during the Troubles and how they are most likely never going to get any justice after the new bill the Brits brought in. It just fucking upsets me so much.
