My reading list for the comics has stagnated. So now I need to list everything I've got. If anyone sees this and knows of any characters I missed, tell me. I don't know if I'll be interested in them or anything, but it'd be good to know. And while I do only read stuff I can find online, the list does help me keep track of stuff:
Marvel Masterworks: The Fantastic Four Vols 1-19
Marvel Masterworks: Iron Man Vols 1-12
Marvel Masterworks: Thor Vols 1-20
Marvel Masterworks: The Avengers Vols 1-16 and (maybe) Volume 18
Marvel Masterworks: The X-Men Vols 1-6
Marvel Masterworks: Daredevil Vols 1-13
Marvel Masterworks: Captain Marvel Vols 1-4
Marvel Masterworks: Nick Fury Vols 1-3
Marvel Masterworks: Doctor Strange Vols 1-7
Marvel Masterworks: The Incredible Hulk Vols 1-12: I'd go beyond this, but there's an issue in volume 13 I don't want to read so my indescive brain stopped me from writing more.
Marvel Masterworks: The Sub-Mariner Vols 1-8
Marvel Masterworks: The Silver Surfer Vols 1-2
Marvel Masterworks: The Defenders Vols 1-7

Into the Anthill pt 10 - Yellowjacket
I’ve reached Part 10 of my readthrough and that finally brings us into the 1970’s. In this section of his history all of Hank’s major appearances are in the Avengers book, which is a first for him. Ultron and Vision are now in play, but Hank still sees a few more big changes to his personal status quo here. There’s his switch to the moniker Yellowjacket, his long-awaited wedding to Janet van Dyne, and his formal resignation from the Avengers.
He changed his name again. And he left the team again. Classic Hank Pym.
🐜🐜🐜
Avengers vol 1 #59-60, 63-75, 90-91
The vigilante called Yellowjacket stormed Avengers Mansion to demand a spot on the team, taunting that he had bested Goliath and left him for dead. When they attacked him he held a gun to Wasp’s head and fled with her as his hostage. After he took her to his base he kissed her and promptly flinched away in a panic, promising to let her leave if she wanted. She decided then to marry him, much to her allies’ protests. After the vows were exchanged and the couple was legally married the Circus of Crime snuck in to kill them all at once. Yellowjacket broke down in fear before exposing himself as Goliath to save Jan. She had apparently known he was Hank since he kissed her. Once he’d come to his senses he explained that this was likely a temporary psychosis caused by exposure to unknown gasses in his recent experiments.
Hank announced after the honeymoon that increasing his size was contributing to his mental instability so he would move forward as Yellowjacket rather than Goliath. Hawkeye would later steal some of Hank’s size increasing serum, as well as a new (much more revealing) Goliath costume Jan had designed, to become the new Goliath and save Black Widow from Egghead’s new giant robot.
Egghead attacked Earth with a powerful satellite laser and threatened to wipe out whole cities unless the world governments surrendered to him. Clint’s brother Barney, who Egghead had attempted to hire as a goon, knew where the satellite would be and helped the Avengers locate it. He was then killed in the ensuing fight. Egghead then hired Swordsman to kidnap Goliath for him so he could finally get his vengeance against Hank, not realizing this Goliath was Clint instead. Swordsman betrayed Egghead before he could discover the truth.
Ultron took control of Vision to steal adamantium from SHIELD to create his new body, Ulton-6. Thor and Iron Man assisted in battling him, but his new body was too strong for them to deal any real damage to. Vision and Hank set a trap at the UN, disorienting Ultron enough to trick him into detonating his nuclear core and destroying his new body. Thor contained the blast in a vibranium shell that Black Panther supplied.
The Grandmaster threatened to destroy Earth if Kang lost to him in his Game of Galaxies, so Kang summoned the Avengers to fight for him. Captain America, Goliath, Thor, and Iron Man faced off against the Squadron Sinister (Dr. Spectrum, Hyperion, Night-Hawk, and Whizzer) in the UK. Black Knight accidentally interrupted this round, nearly causing a forfeit. Next round Yellowjacket, Black Panther, and Vision were sent to France in 1942 to face the Invaders (Captain America, Human Torch, Namor). Black Knight helped the team beat Kang after Grandmaster’s game ended and the Avengers let him join them as a reserve member.
Hank eventually took a leave of absence to study how the oil fields in Alaska were threatening the wildlife, taking Janet and Bill Foster with him. When Ronan the Accuser sent a robotic sentry to Earth to destroy Mar-Vell, Hank and Jan suited up to help when the Avengers got there. Unfortunately Hank was all but useless after being taken out early in the fight. After Mar-Vell was saved and Ronan fled the planet Hank formally resigned from the Avengers to focus on his bio-chemistry. Naturally, Jan followed suit.
Minor/Cameo appearances from this period:
Sub-Mariner vol 1 #14
Daredevil vol 1 #52
Captain America vol 1 #114-116, 121
Iron Man vol 1 #18

Hi! I read The Living Weapon recently and I was just wondering what actually happened to the Meachum family? I remember they were quite a big and enjoyable part back in the 70s but I don’t recall much about them from any more recent comics. The Brenda storyline seemed so similar to Joy and it made me realise I haven’t seen her since the 90s, I think? I also can’t remember Joy’s mom being mentioned in any of the older comics but in TLW it seems like Harold’s cheating on her and planning to leave her and Joy for his new family? Was she always around or did something happen to her which I’ve forgotten?
Great question (sorry for the slow response)! When we're talking about the Meachum family in the modern era, we're really just talking about Joy and Brenda because:
Harold Meachum: Stabbed to death by a ninja in Marvel Premiere #18
Ward Meachum: Burned to death by the Super Skrull in Namor the Sub-Mariner (1990) #18
Death in the Marvel Universe might be a revolving door, but the Meachum men haven't found the exit yet. And even Living Weapon doesn't mention Joy's mother directly, so we still don't, to my memory, know anything about her, who she was, where she is now, or why she was absent from those original Iron Fist stories that heavily involved the Meachums.
Yes, you're right, Joy has slipped to the sidelines over the years, which I think is a huge shame because she's a great character (I recently wrote a post listing some of my dream comics and included a Joy-centered one, and I meant that with my whole heart). Her most recent appearance was back in 2011 in Power Man and Iron Fist volume 2, when she was working as Danny's office manager at the Rand Foundation (his not-for-profit organization) and they briefly dated.
Tumblr media
Joy: "Victor! Your mother called to remind you of your chemistry quiz. I told her you were out with a large group of volunteers all night on a census of the homeless." Victor: "You're the greatest, Joy." Joy: "Thank you. As a corporate raider for years before taking leave of my senses to work here, I take great pride in my lying." Power Man and Iron Fist vol. 2 #1 by Fred Van Lente, Wellington Alves, Bruno Hang, Nelson Pereira, and Joe Caramagna
(Have I mentioned that I love her?)
Danny and Victor saved her from supervillain mind control at the end of that series, and she hasn't been seen since. I would love for Marvel to bring her back.

Cameos from Happy and Pepper related to Tony's supposed disappearance (due to him being trapped in his suit).

[A #50] The Avengers find Hercules and help him; however, Hercules chooses to stay in Olympus afterward and leaves the Avengers.

[CA #103] Sharon's name is finally revealed (she was previously only known as Agent 13). They go on a date, but the Red Skull's minions kidnap her and force Steve to come after them. They escape, but unknown to Steve, the Red Skull has attached "nuclear tape" to the back of his neck.
[CA #104] Steve goes to fight the Red Skull while Sharon, Fury, and Tony Stark disarm a bomb connected to Steve's nuclear tape.

[AA #2] The Avengers and Steve wind up in an alternate universe where their other selves are kind of extremists and defeat the Scarlet Centurion to get back.
[A #57] First appearance of Vision, who attacks them while being mind-controlled but then takes them to his boss, Ultron. Natasha picks up the identity of Black Widow again.
[A #58] The Avengers learn that Ultron created Vision and used Simon Williams' memory bank as a basis for his mind. Vision joins the Avengers.
[A #59] Someone calling himself Yellowjacket says he beat up Hank. He then kidnaps Jan, who then later tells the Avengers that they're getting married.
[A #60] Yellowjacket and Jan get married. Yellowjacket is revealed to be Hank after a schizophrenic episode. The Circus of Crime foolishly attacks the superhero-packed wedding. Tony and Steve leave to deal with issues in IM #10 and CA #110, respectively.
[CA #110] Steve saves Rick Jones from the Hulk. Rick then puts on Bucky's costume and asks to be his sidekick. Steve agrees, and they fight Madame Hydra/Viper (in her first appearance) and her Hydra goons together.
[CA #111] Steve and Rick fight Hydra again. Steve jumps into a river as they're shooting at him. A bullet-riddled costume and a Steve Rogers face mask are found afterward, but no body.
[CA #112] Recap of Steve's adventures from the original Cap comics, Avengers, Tales of Suspense, and this current run, narrated by Tony Stark in the wake of Cap's apparent death.
[CA #113] Captain America is given a funeral that Madame Hydra then crashes. Rick goes after her, and so does Steve, who is unsurprisingly alive after all. After Hydra is defeated, Steve explains how the Cap that was gunned down was a fake. Steve now has a secret identity again.
[CA #114] After Steve and Sharon fight A.I.M., Steve asks Sharon to resign from S.H.I.E.L.D. Sharon refuses to quit her job, and they break up. Steve then tries to assume a different civilian identity but is found by Red Skull, who has the Cosmic Cube again.
[CA #115] After spending some time toying with Steve, Red Skull transforms Steve into himself, and himself into Captain America.
[CA #116] Red Skull continues to toy with Steve, who is being attacked non-stop due to looking like the Skull. Eventually, Red Skull teleports Steve to the isle where the Exiles are, as he recently betrayed the Exiles and know that they will want to kill the Red Skull on sight.
[CA #117] First appearance of Sam Wilson and Redwing, who save Steve as he's being attacked by the Exiles. Steve realizes he can take off the Red Skull mask and look like a normal man. He convinces Sam to adopt a superhero identity and names him the Falcon so that he can serve as a symbol when fighting the Exiles.
[CA #118] Steve trains Sam in hand-to-hand combat and together, they fight the Exiles. Red Skull is annoyed that Steve is thriving and decides it's time to end it himself.
[CA #119] Red Skull restores himself and Steve to their true bodies. They fight (along with Sam and Redwing). However, Red Skull loses his advantage when the Cosmic Cube gets deactivated as part of an unrelated plot by A.I.M. and uses the last vestiges of its power to teleport away.
[CA #120] Steve and Sam return to the States and part ways. Steve takes on a job at a local college and saves a professor from being kidnapped by A.I.M., then quits the job.
[IM #9] The Mandarin ships a Hulk android from China to kidnap Janice and prove that Tony Stark and Iron Man are the same. Tony defeats the android.
[IM #10] Tony and Janice go on a nice date. The Mandarin tries to ruin Tony by releasing photoshopped images of him partaking in secret communist meetings, then lures him to his new hideout in the States.
[IM #11] The Mandarin unmasks Iron Man only to find that it's some blond dude and that Tony is elsewhere (unknown to him, Tony is wearing prosthetics, and the other Tony is an LMD). The Mandarin goes after the LMD Tony. After a televised fight, the Mandarin is defeated but it looks like Tony died because the LMD shut down.
[IM #12] Tony gets the LMD working again, then shuts it down himself and puts it away. He and Janice go to visit her lawyer but are attacked by the Controller.
[IM #13] Tony defeats the Controller, but starts distancing himself from Janice due to fears that his feelings will interfere with his duties as Iron Man.
[IM #14] Tony and Janice go on a break due to Tony's inner turmoil. Tony fights the Night Phantom.
[IM #15] Tony and Sitwell are attacked by the Unicorn and the Red Ghost while on a plane. Tony gets off but fears Sitwell has perished when he sees the plane explode.
[IM #16] Tony and the Unicorn have a "handcuffed together" episode and bring down the Red Ghost. The Unicorn then escapes with the Red Ghost. Sitwell is fine.
[A #61] First appearance of the quinjet. The Avengers help Strange and Black Knight fight bad guys.
[A #62] The Avengers go to Wakanda. T'Challa defeats Man-Ape.
[A #63] Hank decides to stay as Yellowjacket. Clint takes Hank's growth serum and trades his Hawkeye identity for Goliath. He saves Natasha, who was captured by Egghead while on a S.H.I.E.L.D. mission.
[A #64] Barney Barton comes to the Avengers to help them foil Egghead's evil plot, and they go into space. However, Barney dies. Clint's name is finally revealed.
[A #65] Egghead escapes back to Earth. Clint personally goes after him and captures him.
[A #66] First appearance of adamantium, which Vision steals after starting to act strange. Ultron-6 (upgraded from Ultron-5) makes his return.
[A #67] The Avengers fight Ultron.
[A #68] The Avengers trick Ultron into self-destructing.
[IM #17] Midas and Madame Masque attack the Stark factory while Tony is away, which reactivates the Tony LMD. The LMD decides to take over Tony's life, so when Tony returns, he's treated as an impostor and thrown out. Tony is moping in the rain when Madame Masque kidnaps him.
[IM #18] Thinking that the real Tony is a very good impostor, Midas "forces" him to be part of their plot to take over Tony's company, which involves fighting the LMD so Tony is actually for it. He flirts with Madame Masque as she trains him. When they break in and the LMD confronts them, he protects her and fights and defeats the LMD himself, but his heart stops beating. Madame Masque gets away while the Avengers find him and try to save him.
[A #69] Kang kidnaps a dying Tony, which lures the other Avengers (and Steve and Thor) into going after him. Kang reveals that he needs them to defeat the Grandmaster.
[IM #19] Tony has heart surgery, which removes the need for his chestplate and replaces the damaged parts of his heart with synthetic tissue. He is cautioned to avoid unusual stress, which will make it more likely that his body rejects the synthetics. Midas and Madame Masque kidnap him again. Madame Masque is revealed to be Whitney Frost, and they kiss without her mask on. They escape Midas, and Whitney goes her own way.
[A #70] Tony, Steve, Thor, and Clint are tasked to fight some of the Grandmaster's champions. Dane accidentally interferes.
[A #71] T'Challa, Hank, and Vision are teleported to 1941 and must fight the Invaders; they win. Kang tries to kill them after he doesn't need them anymore, but Dane manages to intervene. Dane joins the Avengers.
[IM #20] Tony fights one of his security guards, who is being possessed by Lucifer, and defeats him.

Is there a tradeback of Namor that a newbie like me could check out?
I would suggest bypassing the Golden Age & Silver Age unless you enjoy that era of comic telling and begin with:
Saga of the Sub-Mariner
- A 12 issue limited series that is narrated by Namor as he tells of his life from the Golden Age > Silver Age > Bronze Age and ends just before the 90s began.
If you want a very easy beginner's guide to Namor, I made this graphic you can save and it breaks up Namor into easier to read sections depending on the era you want to read him in.
Tumblr media
Just add King in Black: Namor (2020) & Marvels Snapshots: Sub-Mariner
That series and one shot comic hadn't come out when I made this guide. They're both great!
However if you want a more in depth look at the past here are the collections Namor is featured in:
Golden Age Collections:
Marvel Masterworks: Golden Age Marvel Comics
- Collects Golden Age Namor beginning with Marvel Comics #1 & Marvel Mystery Comics #2
Everett's work is also found in Marvel Masterworks, but it was collected separately as well very recently.
Bill Everett the Pre-War years
- Collects Namor by Bill Everett before Everett went off to serve in WWll
Bill Everett the Post-War years
- Collects Namor by Bill Everett after his return.
Marvel Masterworks: Golden Age All-Winners
Silver Age Collections:
Marvel Masterworks: The Sub-Mariner
- This is all you need for all his Silver Age glory. Including Daredevil #7, all of Tales to Astonish, and the entire The Sub-Mariner (1968) series.
Epic Sub-Mariner collects Namor's Silver Age introduction & guest starring: Fantastic Four (1961) 4, 6, 9, 14, 27, 33; Fantastic Four Annual (1963) 1; Strange Tales (1951) 107, 125; Avengers (1963) 3-4; X-Men (1963) 6; Daredevil (1964) 7, Tales to Astonish (1959) 70-76
Essential Sub-Mariner is basically the same as Epic Sub-Mariner: Daredevil #7, Tales to Astonish #70-101, Tales of Suspense #80, Iron Man & the Sub-Mariner #1, and Sub-Mariner (1968) #1
Basically you can just read his Early Guest Starring appearances as one off comics, you don't need to get Essential & Epic because it repeats.
Namor's Bronze Age Comics were never collected as all he did during that era was go from book to book.
Modern Age Collections:
Bryne/Lee 90's Collection
- Collects Namor, the Sub-Mariner (1990) 1-40, Annual 1-2; Incredible Hulk Annual 18; Silver Surfer Annual 5, Doctor Strange, Sorcerer Supreme Annual 2.
As of this posting they have not collected the entire 90s.
Sub-Mariner Initiative or Sub-Mariner Revolution is the same 6 issue mini series (don't know why it got two names) published in 2007. I can't recall if it's in a trade.
Namor: The First Mutant Vol 1 & 2 collects the 2010 series in 2 parts.
King in Black: Namor is the most recent 5 issue miniseries and it is collected in a trade.
If you need specific issue help please let me know!

Strange Tales: A Doctor Strange Publication History Lesson Part 2, Roy Thomas and the Masked Doctor
Tumblr media
By Vincent Faust
Steve Ditko left the Doctor Strange feature after Strange Tales 146. This coincided with Amazing Spider-Man 38, marking his mysterious and silent overnight departure from Marvel Comics. Some diehard Strange and Ditko fans would argue that those 1960s stories have never been and never will be surpassed. That may or may not be true, but Stephen Vincent Strange has definitely had quality stories since. So let’s get into it.
Immediately following Ditko, Bill Everett came on as artist briefly for Strange Tales 147-152. Everett is most known as the creator of Namor the Sub-Mariner in the Golden Age. A character he eventually had three distinct and acclaimed runs on. His line was very unique for the post-Fantastic Four Marvel. Fans either love or hate his “hammerhead” style Namor. On Doctor Strange, he was both a throwback to the Golden Age style and reminiscent of the burgeoning underground comics scene of the time. Half of these stories were written by a young Dennis O’Neil (years later to become a legend at DC), with Stan the Man handling the rest.
Tumblr media
What then followed for the remainder of the Strange Tales period was a rough spot. Marvel legend Marie Severin did a stint on art, but never truly fit the character like she did with Hulk. Strange Tales 162-168 largely featured scripts by the obscure Jim Lawrence (also did James Bond newspaper strips) and art by Dan Adkins. This period of over a year is not a well remembered time.
Following ST 168, the book’s features get split up. Just like the end of many of Marvel’s anthology books (Tales of Suspense, Tales to Astonish, Journey into Mystery), one feature keeps the numbering and another gets their own new title. Strange continued on into Doctor Strange Vol 1 169 and Nick Fury’s modern day stories moved to Nick Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.
This title change also brought a creative change with incoming writer Roy Thomas. Thomas had already written a few Strange tales during the Strange Tales era (lol). Across the Marvel line, he was frequently being handpicked as Lee’s successor on his most beloved characters. Thomas has a solid run that is marked by a controversial decision. He’d return to the character several times through the years.
During this stint, Thomas is joined by Gene Colan, one of the more underrated artists of Marvel’s Silver Age stable. Colan is also known around that time for Iron Man and a huge run on Daredevil, and would later team with Marv Wolfman on the cult classic Tomb of Dracula.
In Doctor Strange 177, Stephen puts on a mask and gets a new out-of-costume secret identity in Stephen Sanders. This was a move to try and hue closer to Marvel’s other more traditional superheroes. Nowadays, it is mostly just a curiosity laughed at in online articles.
Tumblr media
Strange's traditional costume and identity were restored in 182. Unfortunately, the book would be canceled after just one more issue. With no space to finish the story, Thomas used other books he was writing to wrap up a crossover that would be another major piece of the puzzle of Strange's history.
In Doctor Strange 183, Sub-Mariner 22, and Incredible Hulk 126, the three titular heroes team up to defeat the Nameless One and his Undying Ones. A later Subby story roped in the Silver Surfer and introduced Valkyrie. And thus the Defenders were born. The greatest non-team in comics. The team's first stories officially together were in Marvel Feature 1-3. These issues also featured some solo Strange features. The Defenders then got their own comic, being written initially by Steve Englehart.
Tumblr media
Strange's stints on teams will not be chronicled past this point in these posts.
Unfortunately, most of the stuff between Ditko and the material discussed in the third part has not been collected very well. Check out masterworks and essentials if you want it now. It should be in the second epic collection eventually.
All of the above information has been primarily sourced from good olde Wikipedia (a totally legitimate source), the dark recesses of my own brain, the Marvel Wikia, this Polygon article, and most importantly Neilalien.com which is a fantastic Doctor Strange fansite.

ik you're not that close to that point right now but here's a tip that had me thrown for a loop when i was first reading Olde iron man comics: after tales of suspense #99 the story continues on in iron man and the sub-mariner #1 before going on to iron man vol 1 (1968) #1. tales of suspense #100-104 is a modern team-up comic with bucky and clint (which is very good and fun, but completely unrelated to iron man)
ahh thank you!!

My reading list for the comics has stagnated. So now I need to list everything I've got. If anyone sees this and knows of any characters I missed, tell me. I don't know if I'll be interested in them or anything, but it'd be good to know. And while I do only read stuff I can find online, the list does help me keep track of stuff:
Marvel Masterworks: The Fantastic Four Vols 1-19
Marvel Masterworks: Iron Man Vols 1-12
Marvel Masterworks: Thor Vols 1-20
Marvel Masterworks: The Avengers Vols 1-16 and (maybe) Volume 18
Marvel Masterworks: The X-Men Vols 1-6
Marvel Masterworks: Daredevil Vols 1-13
Marvel Masterworks: Captain Marvel Vols 1-4
Marvel Masterworks: Nick Fury Vols 1-3
Marvel Masterworks: Doctor Strange Vols 1-7
Marvel Masterworks: The Incredible Hulk Vols 1-12: I'd go beyond this, but there's an issue in volume 13 I don't want to read so my indescive brain stopped me from writing more.
Marvel Masterworks: The Sub-Mariner Vols 1-8
Marvel Masterworks: The Silver Surfer Vols 1-2
Marvel Masterworks: The Defenders Vols 1-7

Into the Anthill pt 23 - Dodging The Infinity Bullet
Anyone who knows the MCU knows Thanos and the Infinity Stones were big trouble. By virtue of luck (or because Marvel just wasn’t interested in using him for these events) Hank was not heavily involved with either the Infinity Gauntlet or Infinity War comics. He was even a survivor of Thanos’ snap. Hank’s latest retirement from active Avengers duty came at a great time, giving him enough page presence to help but not so much that the fate of the universe was on his shoulders.
And a fun side-note: this will be my last post where all the comics I read are older than I am.
🐜🐜🐜
Avengers West Coast vol 2 #69-74
Per their new charter with the U.N. all Avengers teams were required to have 7 active members and 7 alternates, so the WCA gathered to vote. Iron Man, Wonder Man, Scarlet Witch, Tigra, Hawakeye, Wasp, and Hank won the vote. Hank and Jan announced that they’d prefer to be alternates, opting to just stay friends and do their own thing (Jan would leave to travel and Hank would return to his first love (lab work)). Spider-Woman came to Avengers Compound to get help defeating the Dr. Demonicus and the Pacific Overlords, who had extorted Living Lightning into serving them and planned to raise their own sovereign landmass from the sea. Lightning betrayed them to join the Avengers, but Demonicus bought enough U.N. influence to establish his new island of Demonica as a recognized nation.
Avengers vol 1 #335-338
When Thane Ector and his brethren escaped from The Collector’s ship and threatened Earth the Avengers sent Hank, Black Panther, Beast, and Quasar up to the ship to revive him. Once Collector was up and able to identify the correct habitat, Hank shrank the rest so that they could enter it and gather information about his biology. Hank wished he could go too, but he still feared what changing his own size would do to him after all this time. When he drew the comparison between Ector’s tactics and how viruses spread, The Watcher appeared before him. Though his oath prevented him from directly interfering, he stoically indicated his advice to Hank. Once they had gathered enough information from a live specimen, Hank sent the others to join Cap and Sersi on the battlefield.
Infinity Gauntlet vol 1 #2
Thanos used the Infinity Gauntlet to wipe out half of all life in the universe. Hank was among the survivors and worked with the West Coast Avengers to help survivors any way they could. Among the billions of lost lives were Wasp, Hawkeye, U.S.Agent, and Quicksilver.
Avengers: Death Trap, The Vault
When Mentallo and Venom started a riot to break out of The Vault, Hank was among the Avengers who responded. Warden Truman Marsh, who hated heroes and villains due to his parents’ death as bystanders, planned to use the failsafe bomb under the prison to make sure there were no survivors. Freedom Force arrived to help as well, but before Marsh could change his mind the detonator was activated. Hank worked with Captain America and Thunderball to deactivate the bomb, but this did not stop the meltdown. Iron Man and Radioactive Man were able to absorb the radiation and save everyone inside.
Avengers vol 1 #345, Avengers West Coast vol 2 #81-82
The Kree and Shi’ar were using our sun as a power source for the wormhole connecting their galaxies, destabilizing it in the process. Cap called in as many reserve members as he could to divide into teams: one to meet with the Shi’ar, one for the Kree, and one to stay home. Seeing Hawkeye’s frustration at being assigned to the home team, Hank offered him Pym Particles so he could suit up as Goliath again and take U.S.Agent’s place on the Kree team. After they left, the home team failed to stop their Shi’ar and Kree prisoners from breaking out of containment and escaping Earth.

Dracula vs. The Marvel Universe! 14 Times The Lord of The Undead Fought Superheroes!

Hey, remember that time Dracula fought the Hulk? Or the X-Men? Or Spider-Man? No? Well, you're in luck, because we do!

Dracula. The very name conjures images of sexuality, corruption, and decadence. From the original novel written by Bram Stoker in 1897 to the moment Bela Lugosi donned the famed opera cloak in 1931, the character of Dracula has been an iconic horror staple.
In fact, Dracula has been the subject of over 200 films, second only to the number of films starring Sherlock Holmes. But films, novels, and television aren't the only genres that have contained Dracula’s bloodlust. Comic books have been a compelling source for new Dracula material. Marvel Comics in particular have been a happy hunting ground for the Lord of the Vampires.
After the easing of Comic Code restrictions in the early seventies, Stan Lee and Marvel were eager to explore classic monsters in the pages of their books. When the code loosened its grip, Lee and company were able to resurrect the four color boogiemen that lay forgotten for so long. In 1972, writer Gerry Conway and artist Gene Colan introduced Tomb of Dracula and a legend was born. Now there was a version of Dracula that borrowed from Stoker and Lugosi stalking the same fictional universe as Spider-Man and the Avengers.
Soon, writer Marv Wolfman would take over the writing chores on Tomb of Dracula and create one of the greatest continuing horror sagas in comic book history. Within the pages of Tomb of Dracula, Wolfman introduced the vampiric detective Hannibal King, Lilith (Dracula’s Daughter), and most importantly, Blade, the Vampire Hunter, who later helped kick off the current superhero movie boom.

Dracula existed within the Marvel Universe, but other than rare occasions not many Marvel heroes appeared in Dracula’s book, giving the title a sense of isolation from the rest of the Marvel Universe. That is not to say that Dracula has not stalked the titles of the mainstream Marvel heroes. Oh no, dear reader, the Prince of Darkness has cast his shadow on many Marvel heroes, making him one of the greatest, if often overlooked villains in Marvel history. Here is a look at times Dracula, the greatest monster of them all, has stalked the Marvel Universe.

Dracula Meets Spider-Man
Giant Sized Spider-Man #1 (1974)
In this tale, Aunt May is suffering from a rare blood disease because she’s Aunt May. Spidey learns that the only man that has the cure is an eccentric doctor that refuses to travel by plane. Spider-Man learns from Reed Richards that the scientist is traveling by ship, so Spidey gets his webbed ass to the ship to find the doctor.
Also on board the ship are members of the Maggia who want the formula, and of course, Dracula himself who is also after it. Hilarity ensues as Dracula dispatches the crooks one by one, and throws the Maggia leader overboard.

The book is a send up of the classic death at sea sequence of Stoker’s Dracula, as Dracula feeds off the Maggia onboard. While never featuring a direct confrontation between hero and vampire, this issue served as a warning...Dracula is out there.

Allied with the Avengers (1973)
Avengers #118
Ironically, one of the first times Dracula was drawn into the events of the Marvel Universe, he did so to defend humanity! In the Avengers/Defenders war, often considered to be the first true crossover in comics history, the Dread Dormammu opened a dimensional gateway to Earth. The Avengers and Defenders were stuck in Dormammu’s dimension so could not defend the Earth from an incursion by the savage Mindless Ones, headless beings that thrive on destruction. A group of super-powered champions on Earth, not knowing where the Mindless Ones were pouring on from, took up arms to protect their home.
read more: The Weird History of Marvel Superheroes vs Monsters
One of these beings was none other than Dracula, who along with such heroes as Power Man, the Fantastic Four, and Ka-Zar, fought back against the Mindless Ones. But don’t think Dracula was acting magnanimously true believers; imagine if a horde of beasts was smashing your favorite eatery. That’s what Earth is to Dracula, a theme restaurant with an all you can eat buffet of jugulars.
Yes, Dracula fought the Mindless Ones, but in doing so he made sure his food supply remained strong and proved to Marvel readers just how badass he was by taking on the Mindless Ones...creatures capable of going toe to toe with the Hulk!
Tumblr media
The Creation of Baron Blood (1976)
Invaders #7
One of Captain America’s most enduring foes was created by none other than Dracula. What’s more evil than a Nazi vampire? Pretty much nothing, which makes Baron Blood one of the most vile creatures in the Marvel Universe. In the dark days of World War II, John Farnsworth was an English aristocrat obsessed with vampire lore. When he travels to Transylvania, he encounters Dracula, who transforms Farnsworth into the living dead.
Dracula sends blood to England to punish the country for the actions of Dracula’s nemesis Jonathan Harker. As Baron Blood, Farnsworth fought the Invaders, Captain America, and even his own brother who adopted the heroic persona of the first Union Jack.

Blood’s days of fighting for the Axis were cut short when the Sub-Mariner staked the bejesus out of him. Blood was resurrected in the modern day by a minion of Dracula and fought a legendary battle with his old foe, Captain America. Now, a Nazi vampire is pretty badass, but a Nazi vampire created by Dracula himself? That’s some legendary bloodsucker right there!

Dracula vs. Doctor Strange (1976)
Tomb of Dracula #44
The Lord of Darkness fed off Doctor Strange (he probably tasted like sage, cinnamon, and quickly forgotten dreams), in the pages of Tomb of Dracula #44. In Strange’s own book, Dracula locks the Sorcerer Supreme in a dungeon so he can watch the embraced Doctor arise as a vampire. That’s quite a sense of irony Marvel’s Dracula possesses, huh?
read more: Doctor Strange Comics Reading Order
Little did Dracula know that Strange astral projected out of his body before Dracula could finish the fateful bite. Strange uses his astral form to mess with Dracula who furiously arrives at the dungeon after days of being mocked and prodded by the wizard.
An awesome fight ensues between a vampiric Doctor Strange and Dracula which Strange wins by conjuring a blazing crucifix. The edge in the battle went to Strange who seemed to be one step ahead of Dracula, but let us not forget that during their first encounter Dracula easily dispatched Strange with one bite. Dracula’s mistake was letting Strange have time to plot, but the first struggle would foreshadow a climatic future encounter between the magician and vampire.

Dracula vs. Howard the Duck? (1980)
Howard the Duck Magazine #5
Not all Dracula appearances in the Marvel Universe are legendary but that doesn’t make them any less cool. The following is a treatise on why comics are awesome.
While visiting Cleveland, Dracula spots Howard the Duck. Thinking Howard to be a midget in a duck suit, the Lord of the Undead bites Howard (did I just type that?) but is disgusted by the non-human blood flowing in Howard’s veins. However, Howard is transformed into Drakula (not Duckula or Quakula?) and preys on other ducks.

Howard is restored to his normal self and is actually able to stake Dracula before the vampire can feed off Howard’s girlfriend, Beverly Switzer.
Tumblr media
Dracula Joins The Defenders (1981)
Defenders #95
Ah, the Defenders. Long before they were edgy TV stars, they were the parking place for awesomely odd Bronze Age characters.
In one of the non-team’s most memorable storylines, the Defenders were being beleaguered by the Six Fingered Hand. With newer members Hellcat, Gargoyle, and Son of Satan in tow, the Defenders arrive back to Doctor Strange’s mansion only to be attacked by a possessed Dracula. It seems the Six Fingered Hand had gained control over all vampires.
Proving his awesomeness, the Son of Satan breaks the Hand’s control of Dracula, and agrees to help the Vampire Lord take back Transylvania from the Hand. The team with powerhouses like Strange and the Asgardian Valkyrie are just window dressing as the Son of Satan kicks the Hands' collective butts, destroys a metric ton of vampires by summoning sunlight, and saves Dracula’s undead bacon.
read more: 13 Essential Dracula Performances
This was the first time Marvel used Dracula as an anti-hero in a super-hero title, an honorable villain who was as comfortable in the role of defender of his people as he was bloodsucking fiend. It was a brief union, but among his many roles in the Marvel Universe, Dracula will always be recognized as a Defender.
Tumblr media
Dracula vs. The X-Men (1982)
Uncanny X-Men #159
Monster mash-ups are a staple of the genre. While not traditional monsters at all, mutants meeting Dracula have the same cache as Dracula versus Frankenstein or the Wolfman, it’s just a match made, erm...not in heaven.
Structured like a classic horror film, Uncanny X-Men #159 sees Storm the victim in a very odd mugging. When someone overpowered the weather goddess and cut her throat, Storm suddenly finds herself wanting to die, inviting a stranger through her window at night, drawing back from Kitty Pryde’s Star of David, and shunning sunlight. You don’t have to be Bram Stoker to see where this is going and an epic confrontation between vampire and mutant takes place. The X-Men take out Dracula’s monstrous rat and canine minions, but fall before Dracula, all except Nightcrawler who has the faith to drive the vampire off with a makeshift cross.
When Storm arrives, Dracula finds that he cannot control the primal Storm, who stands tall and proud. In an awesome moment, Dracula tells Storm it was her inner strength that compelled him and after a standoff, Dracula retreats. This was Claremont at his finest, giving each X-Man a moment to shine and writing a classic and pretty damn scary Dracula in the process. The issue created an indelible bond between the X-Men and Dracula, one that stands till this day.
read more: Frankenstein - Comics' Greatest Monster
In the 1982 Uncanny X-Men Annual #6, the battle between the X-Men and Dracula continues as Kitty Pryde is possessed by Dracula’s daughter and one of his most enduring foes, Lilith. It was another compelling confrontation that deepens the threat Dracula had on mutantkind.
Tumblr media
Dracula vs. Thor (1983)
Thor #332
Not satisfied with feeding off ducks, mutants, and wizards, Dracula sets his sights on embracing Lady Sif. In Thor #332, Dracula succeeds in feeding and turning Sif. In issue 333, Thor must face a Dracula empowered by god blood (comics = awesome), and an embraced Sif.
read more: The Best Horror Movies on Netflix
This story was significant in showing what a powerhouse Dracula was and established the idea that if Dracula fed off a non-human being, he would be fueled by their powerful blood. Thor managed to free Sif, but not before fans realized that Dracula was a threat to everyone, god, mutant, or human.
Tumblr media
The Death of a Legend (1983)
Doctor Strange #59-62
In Doctor Strange #59-62, Strange and a group of companions including Dracula hunters Blade and the vampiric detective Hannibal King close all the plot threads left over from Tomb of Dracula and close the door on Marvel’s vampires for a quite a while. Aided by Avengers Captain Marvel (then Monica Rambeau) and the Scarlet Witch, Strange and company race to secure the Darkhold, a book which contains the Montessi Formula, a spell that will rid the Earth of Dracula and the curse of vampirism. Keep in mind that the Darkhold is an ancient magical book that created vampires in the first place.
read more: The Bleeding Heart of Dracula
These issues are the type of storytelling that made Stern a legend, taking elements from Dracula’s appearance in X-Men (the first mention of the Formula) and Thor (whom Dracula is reluctant in facing when he sees the other Avengers by Strange’s side). By the end of the story, Strange does recite the formula and Dracula is finally destroyed.
Like all good vampires, Dracula would eventually return, but the storyline has an epic sense of finality to it. After years of being plagued by Dracula, the Marvel heroes fight back destroying all vampires. For now…
Tumblr media
Dracula vs. The Fantastic Four (2000-2001)
Before the Fantastic Four: The Storms
Dracula’s shadow is cast far and wide across the history of the Marvel Universe. Before they were legends, Sue Storm and Johnny Storm find a mysterious amulet. The young siblings are attacked by zombies seeking the amulet for its power, zombies controlled by none other than Dracula, who lays inert, staked and comatose, using his mind to control the zombies so they may deliver the amulet to the vampire.
read more: The Best Horror Movies on HBO
The Storms, before they were Fantastic, must stop the zombies from taking the amulet to Transylvania to resurrect their puppet master. Even immobile, Dracula proves to be one of the most evil and capable beings in the Marvel Universe.
Tumblr media
X-Men: Apocalypse vs. Dracula (2006)
The cool thing about this series is that it gave added weight to the idea that Dracula has had an impact on the history of the Marvel universe and that his ties to the world of mutants did not begin the day he tried to embrace Storm. Dracula begins embracing members of Apocalypse’s cult which wakes the legendary mutant to defend his followers. The book ties the history of the Van Helsing family into the war between mutant despot and vampire lord.
You can read it here.
Tumblr media
Dracula on the Moon (2009)
Captain Britain and MI:13 #10
The so-called end of vampires arc in Doctor Strange was a large scale storyline bringing in many mainstream Marvel mainstays, but it had nothing on the grand tapestry of cool that was the Dracula arc in the late, lamented Captain Britain and MI:13 title. So, Dracula gathers a sect of vampires on the moon to set up a front for his attack on Earth. Just typing that sentence was awesome. Dracula forms a non-aggression pact with Dr. Doom and only the magic of MI:13 led by Captain Britain and Pete Wisdom has a hope of stopping Dracula.
read more: The Best Horror Movies on Hulu
During the course of the arc, fans find out how brilliant Pete Wisdom is, that Dracula still holds a grudge against Muslims stemming back from his Vlad the Impaler days, that seeing Black Knight duel Dracula is pretty much better than anything else in the world, and that the legendary sword Excalibur wielded by a Muslim woman is more effective against Dracula than any crucifix.
Seriously, stop reading this and track down this storyline, we’ll wait.
Tumblr media
Hulk vs. Dracula
Part of the Fear Itself mega-event, this battle between two legendary monsters took a form fans did not expect. During the course of Fear Itself, the Hulk was transformed into Nul, the Breaker of Worlds. When Thor knocked Nul into the Carpathian Mountains, the Hulk became a threat to Dracula’s sovereignty. Once again taking up the mantle of reluctant defender, Dracula most take on Nul with a group of vampires, the Forgotten at his side. The event book was another step into the modern evolution of Dracula and was the first time he appeared alongside the Hulk.
Tumblr media
An X feud renewed (2011)
X-Men: Curse of the Mutants
Dracula’s return to the X Universe also served as the introduction of the modern interpretation of the Lord of the Undead. Gone is his rocking ‘stache and suave opera cape, arriving is the white hair and Coppola-esque armor. The story is pretty cool, if needlessly complex at times, and introduces Dracula’s son, Xarus. Xarus goes to war with dear old dad with the X-Men and a group of Atlanteans caught in the middle. The whole thing ends with a fierce reminder, family or not, do not mess with Dracula.
It's available on Amazon.
The new look for Dracula would stay consistent across all Marvel media as it was this look that appeared in an episode of Avengers Assemble on Disney XD. The story arc also brings vampirism closer to the X-Men as never before as Jubilee, once the most innocent of the X-Men, is transformed into a vampire. What Claremont and company began in the early '80s continues today as Dracula’s influence on the X-Men looms like a constant shadow over the heroes!

Silver Age Tony Stark: A Summary
So, I thought it would be nice if I went back and condensed the stuff I read into a single post so that it might be a helpful resource later. This will cover Tales of Suspense Vol 1 #39-#99 (the Iron Man part of it - Captain America has his own post here), Iron Man Vol 1 #1-#20, and some additional plot-relevant comics. I chose Iron Man #20 as a stopping point, as that takes us up to December 1969.
Issue-by-Issue Synopsis
Significant events are in bold. Note that a lot of the earlier issues were kind of just silly fluff, so there isn’t much to say about them.
[ToS #39] Tony makes his first appearance, is caught by Wong-Chu in the Vietnamese jungle, and builds a gray metal suit to escape with Ho Yinsen’s help.
[ToS #40] Tony starts carrying his armor around in a briefcase. He gets the idea from the woman he’s currently dating to paint his armor gold.
[ToS #41] Tony fights a bad guy.

[ToS #56] First appearance of the nickname “Shellhead” (though here, it’s two words). Tony decides to stop being Iron Man.
[ToS #57] First appearance of Clint Barton/Hawkeye, who teams up with Natasha to fight Iron Man. They get away. Tony takes Pepper out on a date by accident.
[ToS #58] The Chameleon disguises himself as Captain America and fights Iron Man.
[ToS #59] Tony fights the Black Knight. Tales of Suspense goes from being ½ Iron Man issue and ½ random non-superhero issue to ½ Iron Man issue and ½ Captain America issue.
[ToS #60] Tony realizes he needs to stay in his armor full time to provide his heart with enough power to keep beating, resulting in everyone thinking Iron Man’s done something terrible to Tony.
[ToS #61] The Mandarin attacks Tony’s home and he is presumed dead. Tony flies to China to fight him.
[ToS #62] Tony fights the Mandarin.
[ToS #63] Tony figures out his power problems and makes his return as himself. He realizes Happy loves Pepper too and claims he’s engaged so Pepper will forget about him and go for Happy.
[ToS #64] Natasha and Clint strike at Iron Man again, but Clint’s love for Natasha ruins their plans and they are forced to retreat from the fight.
[ToS #65] Tony fights a bad guy.
[ToS #66] Tony fights a bad guy while doing a weapons demo and chooses to blame the resulting damage (that no one but him and the bad guy witnessed) on himself rather than the bad guy. Happy goes missing.
[ToS #67] Happy has left because he’s unhappy, so Tony finds him as Iron Man and tries to convince him to return. He fails, but Pepper ends up succeeding. Pepper gets increasingly annoyed with Iron Man’s shady behavior.
[ToS #68] First appearance of Morgan Stark, who Count Nefaria tries to use to destroy Tony, though the attempt fails.
[ToS #69] Iron Man is challenged by Titanium Man in a one-on-one televised battle.
[ToS #70] Titanium Man plays dirty during the battle and almost wins, but Happy is able to come in with an assist, though he gets badly injured in the process. Before he passes out, he expresses relief that Pepper loves him. He also reveals that he knows Tony is Iron Man.
[ToS #71] Tony finally defeats Titanium Man. Pepper expresses disgust with Tony for being gone while both Iron Man and Happy were risking their lives.
[ToS #72] Tony fights a bad guy and mopes at how Pepper hates Tony but likes Iron Man.
[ToS #73] The Black Knight kidnaps a still-injured Happy from the hospital to lure Iron Man into battle. Tony defeats him and Happy is rescued, but Tony is left trapped in the Black Knight’s castle.
[ToS #74] Pepper rescues Iron Man from the castle, who then has to rush off to stop doctors from using experimental tech on Happy to save his life. But it’s too late and Happy gets mutated and runs off.
[ToS #75] Tony goes after Happy and manages to capture him.
[ToS #76] Tony manages to unmutate Happy, though Happy now has amnesia. Senator Byrd forces Tony to come to Washington so he can testify on Iron Man, but the Mandarin kidnaps him en route.
[ToS #77] The Mandarin summons a giant android called Ultimo, which Tony fights after secretly suiting up.
[ToS #78] Tony defeats Ultimo and comes back to find that his factory has been shut down and that there’s a warrant for his arrest for not appearing before the Senate.
[ToS #79] Tony feels that Iron Man is almost a separate entity. He fights a random Atlantean who attacked him. Then Namor shows up.
[ToS #80] Namor fights Tony because Namor wanted to be the one fighting the random Atlantean instead (even though the Atlantean was the one who attacked Tony in the first place).
[TtA #82] Tony and Namor fight. The random Atlantean then resurfaces, and Namor leaves to fight him instead.
[ToS #81] Tony decides to testify to the Senate, but is intercepted by the Titanium Man en route.
[ToS #82] Pepper appears at the battle between Iron Man and Titanium Man to try and help Tony, but Titanium Man starts attacking her instead. “Shellhead” appears again as a nickname, but hyphenated.
[ToS #83] Tony defeats Titanium Man. Pepper is relieved to see him and seems into him again. Happy regains his memories.
[ToS #84] Tony is about to testify to the Senate about Iron Man when he passes out. His chestplate is discovered, his heart issues become public knowledge, and suspicions begin to rise that he is actually Iron Man. Happy dons the suit with Tony’s blessing to throw everyone off, but then gets kidnapped by the Mandarin.
[ToS #85] Tony rushes off to build a new suit, then flies to China on a rocket to save Happy.
[ToS #86] Tony fights the Mandarin in hand-to-hand combat for some reason and wins. He and Happy head back to the States.
[ToS #87] Tony builds an “earth-borer” machine. While testing, random buildings, including his own factory, get sucked into the earth.
[ToS #88] Tony fights the Mole Man, who was responsible for sucking buildings in, and then says he’ll tell the public that the earth-borer was responsible rather than scare them with the truth.
[ToS #89] Tony realizes Pepper actually loves Happy. To cope, he goes on a bunch of dates. Then the Melter comes to demand tech from him.
[ToS #90] Tony defeats the Melter.
[ToS #91] Tony fights the Crusher. Happy and Pepper have eloped and are now married.
[ToS #92] Tony does a weapons demo in Vietnam and is then asked to defeat someone named Half-Face.
[ToS #93] Tony fights Half-Face and the Titanium Man, who is working with him.
[ToS #94] Tony defeats Titanium Man. Half-Face renounces his evil ways.
[ToS #95] First appearance of Jasper Sitwell, who has been stationed at Tony’s factory by Nick Fury. The Grey Gargoyle attacks, turns Iron Man to stone, and throws him off a building.
[ToS #96] Sitwell saves Iron Man. Iron Man defeats Grey Gargoyle, but passes out due to the strain on his heart.
[ToS #97] Morgan sleazes his way in and pretends he’s here to help Iron Man, but he really plans on taking him to the Maggia (currently on a ship) to help pay off his gambling debts. Iron Man and the Maggia fight, and then the Maggia bring in Whiplash.
[ToS #98] First appearance of Whitney Frost. Tony fights Whiplash.
[ToS #99] Tony defeats Whiplash and passes out. He gets re-captured by the Maggia when their ship is shot at by A.I.M. They evacuate, leaving Tony trapped.
[IM&SM #1] Tony frees himself, fights Whiplash again, and is then captured by A.I.M.
[IM #1] Whitney seduces Sitwell in order to hopefully learn company secrets from him. Tony fights and defeats A.I.M.
[IM #2] A man obsessed with Tony called Drexel Cord sends a robot after him to defeat him, but it eventually tries to harm his daughter, Janice, and turns on Drexel before Tony finally defeats it. Tony feels guilty.
[IM #3] Happy and Pepper, who no longer work for Tony, hear that Tony is in seclusion and go to him. This is because he must now stay plugged in 24/7 to keep his heart beating. However, he allows Happy to help since Happy knows his secret, but this results in Happy being mutated again. He gets better, but Tony feels guilty.
[IM #4] Tony grapples with the price of being Iron Man and fights the Unicorn.
[IM #5] Tony gets teleported into the future and is almost executed, but he escapes and goes back to his time after a fight.
[IM #6] Tony develops feelings for Janice. The Crusher attacks the factory and threatens Whitney, who was hanging around. Sitwell is ready to do something very foolish to save her, forcing Iron Man to knock him out and defeat the Crusher on his own.
[IM #7] Tony, Janice, and her lawyer (who has been encouraging Janice to sell her late father’s company to Tony) are kidnapped by the Maggia and the Gladiator. Tony escapes just long enough to come back as Iron Man, which makes him look very cowardly to Janice.
[IM #8] Whitney’s backstory as a socialite who didn’t know she had an evil father is revealed. Back in the present, she leads a raid on the Stark factory that Sitwell manages to stop, but she nonetheless saves him when the Gladiator attacks him. When she flees, Sitwell is unable to bring himself to stop her.
[IM #11] The Mandarin unmasks Iron Man only to find that it’s some blond dude and that Tony is elsewhere (unknown to him, Tony is wearing prosthetics, and the other Tony is an LMD).
[IM #14] Tony and Janice go on a break due to Tony’s inner turmoil. Tony fights the Night Phantom.
[IM #15] Tony and Sitwell are attacked by the Unicorn and the Red Ghost while on a plane. Tony gets off but fears Sitwell has perished when he sees the plane explode.
[IM #16] Tony and the Unicorn have a “handcuffed together” episode and bring down the Red Ghost. The Unicorn then escapes with the Red Ghost. Sitwell is fine.
[IM #17] Midas and Madame Masque attack the Stark factory while Tony is away, which reactivates the Tony LMD. The LMD decides to take over Tony’s life, so when Tony returns, he’s treated as an impostor and thrown out. Tony is moping in the rain when Madame Masque kidnaps him.
[IM #18] Thinking that the real Tony is a very good impostor, Midas “forces” him to be part of their plot to take over Tony’s company, which involves fighting the LMD so Tony is actually for it. He flirts with Madame Masque as she trains him. When they break in and the LMD confronts them, he protects her and fights and defeats the LMD himself, but his heart stops beating. Madame Masque gets away while the Avengers find him and try to save him.
[IM #20] Tony fights one of his security guards, who is being possessed by Lucifer, and defeats him.
Characterization
Silver Age Tony essentially has no flaws aside from the issues he runs into from either his double life as Iron Man, or the knowledge that he might drop dead due to his damaged heart at any second. Said issues result in him having a lot of monologues in his head about the irony of seemingly having it all even though he is so troubled. He has also felt like Iron Man was a separate entity from Tony Stark. There is no mention of alcoholism or his abusive father at this point in canon. In fact, we know more about Whitney Frost’s backstory than we do Tony’s.
When it comes to his love life, he is 100% a flirt, and he also has a playboy reputation. (However, it’s unclear how many people he actually sleeps with, given that for most of the decade he had to keep his chestplate a secret.) When he develops romantic feelings for someone, though, he will eventually distance himself from them due to his fears that his life will endanger them and/or the fact that he might die at any moment will be an unfair burden to them. He also tends to not date other people when he has feelings, unless it’s explicitly an attempt to forget the person - he’s seen dating women until feelings for Pepper develop, and then he dates no one even though he’s not pursuing Pepper (due to his bad heart), and then he starts dating again to distract himself once he realizes Pepper loves Happy. After Pepper and Happy marry, he seems at peace with their relationship and eventually pursues Janice Cord, but then again has to draw away due to his personal issues, which leaves him open to developing feelings for Whitney Frost, despite her scarred face and the knowledge that she’s a long-time criminal.
Despite the trouble that his double life brings him, he does find joy in being Iron Man and believes Iron Man is a necessary force. It’s not until he gets heart surgery when he starts to feel doubt, and that’s only because being Iron Man makes it more likely he will die due to the chance his heart will reject the synthetic tissue it now has.
Here’s some of the things he’s done:
Extremely willing to sacrifice himself if it will defeat a bad guy
Donates to charitable causes, such as children’s hospitals
Gives people second chances
Makes it a point of being non-lethal even when it’s an inconvenience
Fights enemies, but then occasionally blames any disturbances resulting from those fights on himself so that the public doesn’t know what kind of terrors he actually faced
Relationships
Here’s a list of the important supporting characters in Tony’s life!
Pepper Potts is Tony’s secretary. She starts out as kind of average-looking and in love with Tony, then eventually starts to dress up more (and covers up her freckles!), which apparently prompts Tony to fall in love with her. However, Tony’s own inner turmoil over his double life and his bad heart stop him from actively pursuing her, and he makes attempts to both remove himself from the picture as well as push her toward Happy. Over the course of the run, her romantic feelings shift between Tony, Iron Man, and Happy (for a while, she despises Tony because she thinks he’s a coward due to him always disappearing when danger happens), but eventually she and Happy get married. By the end of the decade, she is no longer working for Tony but they’re on good terms.
Happy Hogan is Tony’s chauffeur, hired by Tony after Happy saves his life. For a while, Happy is unhappy because he doesn’t do anything (due to Tony not actually needing a chauffeur because he can fly). Despite this, and despite the fact that he understands Tony is a major competitor for Pepper’s affections, he cares deeply about Tony and will risk his life to save his boss. He is also the only person to know Iron Man’s identity, having figured it out for himself, and has even donned the suit. Like Pepper, he is no longer working for Tony, but they’re on good terms.
Morgan Stark is Tony’s cowardly cousin and a prominent gambler. His life and Tony’s usually only intersect when Morgan has gambling debts and tries to offer up Tony as a means to pay off the debts.
Natasha Romanova is a Russian spy who Tony immediately flirts with, though they become at odds once he realizes her real purpose. She only appears in a few issues and is mostly here because we all know she’ll come back later!
Clint Barton is a performer who turns to petty crime because he becomes jealous of Iron Man. He and Natasha team up to fight Tony more than once. Later, he joins the Avengers, but this is never brought up in the Iron Man run.
The Avengers are the superhero team Tony is part of, but his involvement as both Iron Man and as Tony Stark is rarely mentioned. Similarly, the other Avengers make occasional cameos but rarely come up in the narrative. The most notable mentions are 1) when the Chameleon disguises himself as Steve Rogers, causing Tony to fight the real Steve, 2) when the Mandarin sends a Hulk android after Tony, resulting in Tony telling it (without knowing it’s an android) that he always thought Bruce was misunderstood, and 3) when Tony nearly dies after his battle with the LMD, resulting in the Avengers coming to save him and helping him get the heart surgery he needs to survive.
Janice Cord is a woman whose father developed an obsession with Tony and tried to kill him, perishing in the process. Tony develops feelings for her and they eventually start going out. He encourages her to continue with her father’s company, despite the fact that that means he’ll have another competitor. However, Tony then starts distancing himself from her after realizing his work as Iron Man may conflict with his feelings for her. Currently, they are broken up and another man is pursuing her, but she still has feelings for him.
Jasper Sitwell is a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent stationed at Tony’s factory and is a teacher’s pet sort of fellow who rubs Tony the wrong way at first, though this soon changes. The relationship between Sitwell and Iron Man becomes strained, however, after Iron Man is forced to knock him out to stop him from doing something dumb, which embarrasses Sitwell. Sitwell dates Whitney Frost for a while - she’s using him to get to Tony’s weapons, but he knows she’s using him. Nonetheless, they develop actual feelings and both save each other when the time comes.
Whitney Frost is the head of the Maggia who uses Sitwell to get to Tony’s weapons, though she develops feelings for him along the way. However, he realizes she’s using him and stops her when she raids the factory, though he allows her to later flee. As part of the escape, her face becomes badly scarred and she returns as Madame Masque with a new plot involving capturing Tony, except this results in them kissing each other (with Tony undeterred by her scarred face). However, she then runs away, not wanting to burden him with her status as a wanted woman.
