Often described as the world’s largest Buddhist monument, Borobudur rises from the jungles of central Java: a nine-leveled step pyramid decorated with hundreds of Buddha statues and more than 2,000 carved stone relief panels. Completed in 835 AD by Buddhist monarchs who were repurposing an earlier Hindu structure, Borobudur was erected as “a testament to the greatness of Buddhism and the king who built it,” says religion scholar and Borobudur expert Uday Dokras.
Though Buddhists make up less than one percent of Indonesia’s population today, Borobudur still functions as a holy site of pilgrimage, as well as a popular tourist destination. But for the Indonesian Gastronomy Community (IGC), a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and celebrating Indonesian food culture, Borobudur is “not just a temple that people can visit,” says IGC chair Ria Musiawan. The structure’s meticulous relief carvings, which depict scenes of daily life for all levels of ninth-century Javanese society, provide a vital source of information about the people who created it. Borobudur can tell us how the inhabitants of Java’s ancient Mataram kingdom lived, worked, worshiped, and—as the IGC demonstrated in an event series that ended in 2023—ate.
The IGC sees food as a way to unite Indonesians, but the organization also considers international gastrodiplomacy as a part of their mission. Globally, Indonesian food is less well-known than other Southeast Asian cuisines, but the country’s government has recently made efforts to boost its reputation, declaring not one, but five official national dishes in 2018. To promote Indonesian cuisine, the IGC organizes online and in-person events based around both modern and historical Indonesian food. In 2022, they launched an educational series entitled Gastronosia: From Borobudur to the World. The first event in the series was a virtual talk, but subsequent dates included in-person dinners, with a menu inspired by the reliefs of Borobudur and written inscriptions from contemporary Javanese sites.
In collaboration with Indonesia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other partner organizations, the first meal in the Gastronosia series was, fittingly, held at Borobudur, with a small group of guests. The largest event, which hosted 100 guests at the National Museum in Jakarta, aimed to recreate a type of ancient royal feast known as a Mahamangsa in Old Javanese, meaning “the food of kings.” The IGC’s Mahamangsa appeared alongside a multimedia museum exhibition, with video screens depicting the art of ancient Mataram that inspired the menu and displays of historical cooking tools, such as woven baskets for winnowing and steaming rice. Another event, held at Kembang Goela Restaurant, featured more than 50 international ambassadors and diplomats invited by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
But how does one translate 1,000-year-old stone carvings into a modern menu that’s not only historically accurate, but appetizing? “We have to have this very wide imagination,” says Musiawan. “You only see the relief [depicting] the food…but you cannot find out how it tastes.” The IGC designed and tested a Gastronosia menu with the help of Chef Sumartoyo of Bale Raos Restaurant in Yogyakarta, and Riris Purbasari, an archaeologist from the Central Java Province Cultural Heritage Preservation Center, who had been researching the food of Borobudur’s reliefs since 2017.
The range of human activities depicted in the reliefs of Borobudur is so wide that it has inspired research in areas of study stretching from music to weaponry. There have even been seaworthy reconstructions based on the “Borobudur Ships” displayed on the site’s lower levels, exquisitely rendered vessels like the ones that facilitated trade in ancient Southeast Asia. So it’s no surprise that Borobudur has no shortage of depictions of food-related scenes, from village agricultural labor, to the splendor of a royal Mahamangsa, to a bustling urban marketplace. Baskets of tropical fruit, nets full of fish, and even some modern Indonesian dishes are recognizable in the reliefs, such as tumpeng, a tall cone of rice surrounded by side dishes, which is still prepared for special occasions. Some images are allegories for Buddhist concepts, providing what Borobudur archaeologist John Mikic called “a visual aid for teaching a gentle philosophy of life." Uday Dokras suggests that these diverse scenes might have been chosen to help ancient visitors “identify with their own life,” making the monument’s unique religious messaging relatable. The reliefs illustrate ascending levels of enlightenment, so that visitors walk the path of life outlined by the Buddha’s teachings: from a turbulent world ruled by earthly desires at the lowest level, to tranquil nirvana at the summit.
Musiawan says that the IGC research team combined information from Borobudur with inscriptions from other Javanese sites of the same era that referenced royal banquets. While Borobudur’s reliefs show activities like farming, hunting, fishing, and dining, fine details of the food on plates or in baskets can be difficult to make out, especially since the painted plaster that originally covered the stone has long-since faded. Ninth-century court records etched into copper sheets or stone for posterity—some accidentally uncovered by modern construction projects—helped fill in the blanks when it came to what exactly people were eating. These inscriptions describe the royal banquets of ancient Mataram as huge events: One that served as a key inspiration for the IGC featured 57 sacks of rice, six water buffalo, and 100 chickens. There are no known written recipes from the era, but some writings provide enough detail for dishes to be approximated, such as freshwater eel “grilled with sweet spices” or ground buffalo meatballs seasoned with “a touch of sweetness,” in the words of the inscriptions, both of which were served at Gastronosia events.
Sugar appears to have been an important component in ancient Mataram’s royal feasts: A survey of food mentions across Old Javanese royal inscriptions revealed 34 kinds of sweets out of 107 named dishes. Gastronosia’s Mahamangsa ended with dwadal, a sticky palm-sugar toffee known as dodol in modern Indonesian, and an array of tropical fruits native to Java such as jackfruit and durian. Other dishes recreated by the IGC included catfish stewed in coconut milk, stir-fried banana-tree core, and kinca, an ancient alcohol made from fermented tamarind, which was offered alongside juice from the lychee-like toddy palm fruit as an alcohol-free option.
Musiawan describes the hunting of animals such as deer, boar, and water buffalo as an important source of meat in ninth-century Java. Domestic cattle were not eaten, she explains, because the people of ancient Mataram “believed that cows have religious value.” While Gastronosia’s events served wild game and foraged wild greens, rice also featured prominently, a key staple in Mataram that forms the subject of several of Borobudur’s reliefs. It was the mastery of rice cultivation that allowed Mataram to support a large population and become a regional power in ninth-century Southeast Asia. Rice’s importance as a staple crop also led to its inclusion in religious rituals; Dokras explains that in many regions of Asia, rice is still an essential component of the Buddhist temple offerings known as prasad.
The indigenous Southeast Asian ingredients used in Gastronosia’s Mahamangsa included some still widely-popular today, such as coconut, alongside others that have fallen into obscurity, like the water plant genjer or “yellow velvetleaf.” Musiawan acknowledges that modern diners might find some reconstructed ancient dishes “very, very simple” compared to what they’re used to “because of many ingredients we have [now] that weren’t there before.” But in other cases, ninth-century chefs were able to achieve similar flavors to modern Indonesian food by using their own native ingredients. Spiciness is a notable example. Today, chillies are near-ubiquitous in Indonesian cuisine, and Java is especially known for its sambal, a spicy relish-like condiment that combines pounded chillies with shallots, garlic, and other ingredients. But in ancient Mataram, sambal was made with native hot spices, such as several kinds of ginger; andaliman, a dried tree-berry with a mouth-numbing effect like the related Sichuan pepper; and cabya or Javanese long pepper. “It tastes different than the chili now,” Musiawan says of cabya, “but it gives the same hot sensation.” Chillies, introduced in the early modern era by European traders, are still called cabai in Indonesian, a name derived from the native cabya they supplanted.
Gastronosia is just the beginning of IGC’s plans to explore Indonesian food history through interactive events. Next, they intend to do a series on the food of ancient Bali. By delving into the historic roots of dishes Indonesians know and love, the IGC hopes to get both Indonesians and foreigners curious about the country’s history, and dispel preconceptions about what life was like long ago. Musiawan says some guests didn’t expect to enjoy the diet of a ninth-century Javanese noble as much as they did. Before experiencing Gastronosia, she says, “They thought that the food couldn't be eaten.” But afterward, “They’re glad that, actually, it's very delicious.”

hmm you already answered 1 in your tags. so 19 and 4, perhaps, for the mcyt ask game
thank you for the ask!!! :D
19: Have you picked up any vocabulary from mcyts?
Hmm, that's a tricky one? Like. Probably, because I was twelve when I started watching. But it's hard to know specifically. I have started using -ificate, but that's currently more a conscious effort because it's fun to say rather than normal so far. I do remember back in the day feeling like I was picking up vocab but now I can't remember it. "Hadjah!" is also fun to say. I am honestly more aware of picking up vocab from a specific friend of mine, but like. I've probably picked up mcyt vocab because I've watched so much over the years.
4: Do you play minecraft yourself? If yes, for how long have you been playing it?
Well, I don't regularly play these days, but I have played in the past. My account was created in March 2012... so that means my cubito is twelve years old now. My cubito is half my age. My brother got minecraft in Dec 2011, so me and my sister also shared his account for a few months until my sister and I got our accounts, and back then we played a LOT together. I remember not really understanding much, and trying to plan my house down to the block on grid paper while waiting for my turn to play minecraft. I tried to create two portal rooms in my basement because I didn't understand the nether and the end and didn't know you couldn't just build the end portal in your basement.
Friends at school would also play pocket edition minecraft so I joined in but bemoaned that the functionality was worse than computer minecraft. Bedrock minecraft in my head is still like 2012 pocket edition, even though I know it can't be true. A lot of minecraft in the early years and then from 2014 I probably stopped playing as much, and in 2016 when my Mindcrack interest died (because Mindcrack basically had died, and ZPM was all I was watching until it got abandonned), I also lost interest in playing minecraft too (and my friend had gotten me into danganronpa and then zero escape and then I just had other interests).
And then just before whenever the nether update happened again (2019??) I got nostalgic and opened it again and made a minecraft server with my siblings and friends again and it was great fun but then the server stopped working for people outside my network which was frustrating so then that stopped after only a few months and I didn't play any minecraft again for a few years and then I re-entered mcyt fandom in June 2022 with Double Life and I've watched SO MANY videos since then but not played much minecraft.
I opened a new world one day to open it to LAN so I could play with two friends but then one of them, her java edition looked like bedrock and she couldn't find the multiplayer window, and the other one could open multiplayer but her minecraft couldn't find my LAN world. so we instead played new single player worlds for a few hours, and then a couple of times over the next weeks I opened it and did small amounts, but then I haven't touched it in another year or so.
So like. Yes I've had minecraft for half my life now (which is WILD to realise) but I don't play frequently like at all. I would love to play but with a full time job + sportsball 1 + sportsball 2 i don't actually have much free time, and what I do have i instead spend on reading fic or watching videos or cross-stitching while watching a vod or playing dnd with my friends etc. playing minecraft would eat up so much time and i dont think i could just play like ten minutes at a time. plus i currently dont have a desk. or a mouse. so i'd be playing on a laptop on mousepad. which i've *done* but. Oh wait I did also play some MCCI briefly, but got bored on account of doing badly on account of playing with a trackpad and thus having terrible movement. and also being bad at pvp.
so i guess the short answers to those questions are "no" and "for twelve years" which are incongruous answers without the long explanation. and i'm now noticing just how long, so i shall be nice and add paragraphs for you.

Magitech Mechs and Vengeance (Dream)
Henrietta Head of HЯ — 12/05/2022 2:40 AM
Had a fun dream about magitek mechs and vengeance, or well, I say mechs but tbh they were more like vehicles that transform into mechs.
The core conceit is that I was playing a third person shooter or bullet hell video game where the gimmick is that my character can only hold so many 'memories' gained from shooting down and defeating enemies before I need to 'sleep', regaining hit points and activating in combat buffs apparently but only once per mission
It was one of those classic isekai things where the magitek entered the world, allowing megalomaniacal people to act out their villainous plots to alter the shape and nature of the world around them under the belief that their strong powers grant them some measure of divine purpose that justifies their actions.
I was supposedly a regular guy until some shit happened to kill me and an unrequited crush, and instead of hoping that I'd go to heaven with her or some shit my own regrets dragged me down into instead wishing that if I was given another chance at living, I would get my vengeance, and never let anything hold me back anymore.
But instead I woke up, and instead of being a baby or whatever the clock had wound back, I was the woman I had a crush on, nothing had happened yet, but I was still determined to use my second chance to get my vengeance, and enjoy life as it came. Developing my budding powers, creating a network of contacts that tipped me off to the various cells of the organization trying to take over the nation state of Java for me to dismantle, and awkwardly realizing that I exist in this timeline too and trying not to interact with him too much even if he kept showing up.
Slowly but surely becoming the very kind of powerful but unfettered 'divinely ordained' monster I used to hate, getting a sweet makeover, and watching this neat super sentai series about a group of three who each aspired to be just as good as the big three DC superheroes of old only to realize that they're wrapped up in a plot involving alternate realities where they do exist.
Until it was finally time, I had driven the organization to a corner, (I never really bothered to learn its real name and referred to it exclusively as 'that organization' or 'my enemy' apparently) and was about to crush their latest or potentially last base in my magnum opus, a massive and sleek hover tank of sorts armed to the teeth with an array of missiles, lasers, cannons, lasers, and lasers, and it all made me wonder why I was still doing this to begin with, and what comes next really.
Pure vengeance is nice and all but what? Do I just die after this? Do I keep going until something kills me? Do I dedicate my whole life to mopping up the mess this organization left behind and stopping others like them? All of this sprang to mind, unlike the morality of essentially driving up to a hotel, blaring out a short warning, and then immediately blowing it up for the umpteenth time, the only thing stopping me from immediately doing so this time around being the sight of my old self inside, surprising me enough to make me declare that they will have a grand total of 30 seconds to evacuate before I tear the building and everything below it apart. Instead the other residents took the time to fire back and summon a great slime, which I cursed only because I exclusively wielded fire, heat and impact based weaponry this time around, forcing me to only blow up the building itself as I kited around the most disappointing enemy so far, doing next to no damage as I slowly tore it apart into little chunks to evaporate, before I finally did something risky and hot swapped one of my lasers or something to make it a cold laser capable of freezing it, and allowing me to smash it apart.
My victory being short lived however, as I went to sleep, and woke up to find myself facing off against a mechanical black dragon once more, finding the rider of the recurring foe (that was inexplicably capable of cutting itself in half to have the tail and lower body move and fly independently of the front) to be none other than.... My old self. This shocked me a fair bit, as I realized that in my ceaseless pursuit of vengeance I had in fact, lost the reason why I embarked on it in the first place, I had never grown close to myself, and I had lived well past my supposed day of death.
Backing me into a corner as I took one withering blow after another... Until I had a vision, of all of the people I met and connected with, and of the future, or at least a potential one. It wasn't of me happy and married or queen of the world or whatever, it was a clip from the ending of the show I've been watching throughout this game, that I've consistently noted as having strong homoerotic tension between the various supermen and batmen, and in it just before the final battle, the superman wannabe (male) leaned in to kiss the cheek of the batman wannabe  (male) who was driving, causing the usually stone faced and stoike man blushing a little, and asking what that was supposed to be.
The sight, above all else made me realize that there was more tying me to this world than simple revenge, more to see, more people to meet, more that can be worth fighting for. The realization causing my magnum opus to warp and reshape itself around me as I charged forward to meet the black knight riding astride his mechanical steed, and then I fucking woke up before I got an actual ending.

Vladimir Tretchikoff’s Lady from the Orient, sold for a history making record breaking R31,892,000
Tumblr media
On the evening of May 27, 2025 Africa’s premier auction house, witnessed history as Vladimir Tretchikoff’s iconic 1955 painting, Lady from the Orient, sold for a staggering R31,892,000 (approximately US$1,776,017), smashing the artist’s previous auction record. I had the privilege of attending the live auction in Johannesburg, where the electric atmosphere underscored the painting’s enduring appeal. This sale not only marked a new financial milestone for Tretchikoff but also reaffirmed his status as a titan of 20th-century art, blending fine art with popular culture.
Tumblr media
Art History: A Fusion of East and West
Vladimir Tretchikoff (1913–2006), a Russia-born South African artist, painted Lady from the Orient in 1955 during his most prolific period after settling in South Africa in 1946. Known for his vivid, theatrical style, Tretchikoff drew inspiration from his early life in Shanghai, Singapore, and Java, infusing his work with Eastern influences. The portrait depicts 21-year-old Valerie Howe, the daughter of a Cape Town grocer, in a striking green silk gown. Tretchikoff’s use of a Technicolor palette and Hollywood glamour echoes the romanticism of the Pre-Raphaelites, as noted by British art critic William Feaver in a 1974 BBC documentary. The painting captures an idealized feminine beauty, positioning Howe as a "spiritual pin-up" that blends mass appeal with artistic depth.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lady from the Orient became a cultural phenomenon when its print edition soared to fame in 1960s Britain, becoming the second-best-selling print in 1962. Alongside Tretchikoff’s other iconic works like Chinese Girl (1952), it cemented his reputation as "The People's Painter," a title reflecting his ability to resonate with a global audience. His self-taught approach and focus on detailed portraits and still lifes often drew comparisons to Andy Warhol for their bold lines and vibrant colors.
Tumblr media
Financial History: A Steady Climb to Record Heights
Tretchikoff’s market has seen significant growth over the decades, reflecting his enduring popularity. His earlier auction record was set in March 2013, when Chinese Girl sold for £982,050 at a London auction. However, Lady from the Orient had been a coveted piece for collectors even before its recent sale. The painting’s estimate at auction was R5–7 million (approximately $266,790–373,534), but intense bidding—89 bids in total—drove the final price to R31,892,000, far surpassing expectations. Auctioneer Alastair Meredith noted the excitement, remarking, “We’ve breached the $1 million mark,” as bids soared past R18 million.
This sale reflects a broader trend of robust interest in Tretchikoff’s work, fueled by renewed scholarship and museum attention over the past two decades. Posts on X following the auction highlighted the global buzz, with users like @News24 and @WhatSellsBestnoting the $1.7 million sale as a testament to Tretchikoff’s lasting appeal. However, the Russian paintings market has faced challenges since geopolitical tensions in 2022 halted dedicated sales at major auction houses like Sotheby’s and Christie’s, making this record-breaking sale at the auction house even more significant.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Owner History: A Journey Across Generations
Lady from the Orient was acquired directly from Tretchikoff by Mr. Jim Keele in Nassau, a collector who recognized the painting’s potential early on. It remained in Keele’s possession until his passing, after which it was inherited by his descendants. The painting’s provenance, documented by the auction, underscores its careful preservation over the decades, adding to its allure at auction. The anonymous telephone bidder who secured the work on May 27, 2025, after a fierce bidding war with an in-room contender, now joins this lineage, continuing the painting’s journey into the 21st century.
Recent History: A Moment of Triumph
The sale of Lady from the Orient was a highlight of Strauss & Co’s flagship live auction, which also featured works by South African luminaries like William Kentridge and Irma Stern, collectively earning over R62.9 million. The painting was exhibited at the RMB Latitudes Art Fair from May 23–25, 2025, alongside other modern and contemporary works, drawing significant attention before the auction. , The Head of the house's Art Department , emphasized the painting’s iconic status, noting its ability to command record prices decades after its creation.
As I stood in the auction room, the energy was palpable. The dramatic flurry of bids and the final applause as the hammer fell at R27 300 000 when what we whtinessed at the shredded Banksy occured, another bid came in after the pandemonium ensued at history being made when the last offer came in over a call settling at R31 892 000, captured the painting’s profound impact. Lady from the Orient continues to captivate, proving that Tretchikoff’s vision—bridging Eastern mystique, Hollywood allure, and universal appeal—remains as relevant today as it was in 1955.

Tourism, Coffee Culture, and Globalization in Indonesia
By Parneet Dhanjal
I used to think Java and Sumatra were just types of coffee; that was the only context I had heard these words before my knowledge of the world expanded. Similarly, I thought Bali was just a vacation destination in some far off land that rich influencers on Instagram went to. Other than both being in Indonesia, what else do these places have in common? These are richly diverse and populous islands–Java and Sumatra commonly associated by us in the west with rural coffee farms, while Bali is a hot, urban vacation spot–but they’re increasingly part of this globalized world in similar ways. All three produce coffee, and all three are increasingly implicated in global capitalism, trade, and culture.
Coffee plantations are becoming tourist destinations in their own right–a quick Google search for coffee plantations in Indonesia will bring up a plethora of guided tours. Our little group is emblematic of that; we’re increasingly part of what is called “dark tourism”–an industry catering to people who seek out the mysterious and paranormal–which some think might be the key to sustainable development and cultural preservation in Indonesia (Jamaludin et al. 2024, 172-173). Whether that’s for certain remains to be seen, but it’s important to examine the wider context of our journey here.
youtube
While Indonesia has seen a shift away from large colonial coffee plantations and estates, and towards smallholders and families on small plots of land, it might seem sustainability is the name of the game. Indonesia is the third-largest coffee producing country in the world; the largest importer of Indonesian coffee is the United States, followed by various European countries (Arifin et al. 2022, 182; Hamid et al. 2023, 2). Though it’s a lucrative business and contributes massively to Indonesian export earnings, sustainability and eco-certifications for coffee have not seemed to benefit farmers, as the provinces with highest shares of coffee production also have some of the highest rates of rural poverty (Arifin et al. 2022, 180). Ecologically speaking, sustainability schemes promote better land management practices, but the length of global supply chains means that few benefits “trickle down” to small farmers who are disproportionately disadvantaged from the global perspective, while the Starbucks’ of the world are not (Arifin et al. 2022, 180; Hamid et al. 2023, 2).
Tumblr media
Still, coffee consumption in Indonesia is on the rise, which fuels the domestic industry (Arifin et al. 2022, 182). Increasing urbanization, higher standards of living, and the expansion of the Indonesian middle-class are creating home-grown coffee snobs, just like the ones you’d see in any bustling north American city (Arifin et al. 2022, 182; Purnomo et al. 2021, 3). Walk down any street in Jakarta or Yogyakarta and you’ll see fancy cafes and bakeries, filled with young people wearing the latest trends and carrying the newest iPhone. Honestly, I feel at home in the city, but the contrast between rural poverty and urban affluence is stark–we’re quick to point out income inequality at home, but don’t realize how our western consumptive habits and economic development schemes fuel the same inequality overseas.
Despite the income and urban/rural divides, the Kuntilanak plays a massive role in Indonesian culture, regardless of social strata. The numerous Indonesian Kuntilanak horror films can attest to this. Indonesian horror itself is a booming genre, with more western eyes turning to foreign films (The Economist 2024). Indonesian spiritual beliefs still persist as we’ve examined, but it’s difficult to tell now what is art and what constitutes the commodification of Indigenous beliefs and folklore.
Tumblr media
The same ambivalences, lifestyles, and products connect us to even more people across the world–and I’m not sure what to think of that. Coffee is so interconnected with art and media, folklore, neoliberal modernity, Indigeneity, and ecology–I’m starting to think that ghosts are less complicated than this.

Interview: Exporting Seafood Waste
Date: November 8, 2022 Time: 10:00 Switzeland & 16:00 Indonesia Duration: 75 Minutes Platform: Discord Meeting Tools: Computer screen and voice recorder Interviewees: Mr. Misbarchul (Ex Seafood Waste Exporter)
Interview Summary
Interviewees introduction.
The interviewee’s name is Misbarchul, lived and was born in Jepara, Province of Central Java, Indonesia. Currently he is self-employed for his own furniture business, and 2 years ago he worked as an exporter of shell waste in Jepara.
how did he become a shell waste exporter?
Before Covid, he got an offer from his good friend to build a business together, then they tried to collect and process shell waste before exporting it to a client, they got a client from Dubai so the waste was being exported to Dubai at the time.
Is there any export client from another country?
They only exported the waste to Dubai, because at that time they only had one buyer, even though he actually didn't know whether it would be distributed again to other countries or not.
Do you know what those waste will be used for?
unfortunately, they kept it as a secret, but because we were curious we asked and got information that they made a crop fertilizer out of the waste, then it turns out there are rumor says because the shell waste contains high calcium, they made it as a mixture for dairy products like infant formula and sell it to other countries. Some people said it could be used as a mixture for cosmetics and even food supplements, even though the truth is not certain and the client/buyer has highly covered what products they make so we don't really know about that.  The same buyer also ordered the same waste from the Philippines.
what process did you do before shipping/exporting the waste?
first of all, they paid several waste collectors around Jepara to collect the waste that they need and put it all together in one place called a collection point.
because the shells from the collectors are usually still dirty (many remnants of meat still attached), so when it comes to the collection point, they clean it first by pulling it out manually by hand and then wash it in a rotary concrete machine without a mixture of chemicals or soap but clean water, after that, we dried it under the sun until perfectly dry. Pack it and arrange it into a container before ready to be shipped.
I heard that your exporting business has been in a vacuum since the pandemic. what's the reason?
Actually, the order itself is still coming, but the purchase price they offered can't give any profit, because during the pandemic the production cost was getting more expensive but the buyer tried to buy it at a lower price. So they gained hardly any profit, they even lost one container once. Until finally they decided to just vacuum. Even though the buyer is still asking for cooperation even though without considering increasing the purchase price.
last time they had the chance to open an exporting branch in Maros, Makassar, because they knew that there are many shell waste was abundant there, but it didn't work because operational costs increased more than what they expected, after one year they were returned to focused only in Java.
Are there still other types of seafood waste that are abundant in Indonesia?
especially in Jepara, there is a lot of waste from green mussels (Perna viridis) and river mussels (Pilsbryoconcha Exilis), but in Jepara the waste is usually just thrown away to the landfils, he heard that in the East Java area it is still being used as a livestock feed. They also took the shell waste not only in Jepara because there certainly weren't enough of them that met the buyer's specific type and criteria. So they went around the island of Java.
They once tried to find it in Cikarang, but in Cikarang it turned out that the shells were dead, maybe the sea there was polluted, so the shells had dark stains on their skin.
In Central Java, they stopped at Cilacap, but the shells there were already ancient, so buyers didn't really like them. They found the shell in Nusa Kambangan route. only the skin left and the skin is hard and thick. they must be hundreds of years old, still not what buyers want.
What do you think about the fact that the majority of Indonesians like to eat seafood?
In his opinion, especially in Jepara, Central Java, seafood is still a favorite food, so all people like seafood, he’s sure there's no one who doesn't like seafood.
and also because Indonesia is a maritime country with more than 16,000 islands, no wonder if seafood becomes the main source of protein. For Indonesian consuming seafood is part of culture and tradition.
because of the large amount of seafood consumption, do you know where the seafood waste is usually disposed of?
he saw a lot of seafood waste being dumped on the side of the road, mostly close to the street food stalls, and the rest from households or restaurants was just being dumped into the landfill and mixed with the other waste.
What impact do you feel this untreated seafood waste?
often emits an unpleasant odor, and makes the scenery dirty. also some places become polluted and invite a lot of unwanted insects. I'm sure it can also be a source of disease. Seafood waste cannot be degradable in the soil, in Gersik, East Java, Shell waste was used to pile up with soil before building houses, but this seems to have resulted in poor soil quality.
Is there a seafood factory that only takes and sells seafood meat, so it produces a lot of waste from the production?
As far as he know, there are some in Jepara but the factory scale is small compared with East Java like Gresik. but it's not a factory, it's just farmers who separate the meat and shells and then send them to Jakarta. Most farmers here got orders from Jakarta and another big city. Right in Makassar, we just found out that the big commodity is a crab called Rajungan. Even there, they separate the meat and send it to Jakarta. He believes crab shells could be utilized for many things as well as shell waste.
In your opinion, what if seafood waste in Indonesia can be used as renewable material? processed by Indonesian people and produced in Indonesia independently?
he will be very happy, he said that Indonesia lack in human resources and knowledge, they don't have people who understand about the utilization of seafood waste here, and want to help/contribute to the country at the same time. therefore we can only be limited to exporting the waste source.
if there are people who understand and want to contribute here, he's sure their economy will improve, especially fishermen and farmers. Because according to their perception, seafood waste already has no function. Because in the past when he went to the farmers they were shocked and confused because they thought this was unwanted trash without value.
what becomes their motivation for exporting business is to reduce waste and help the local economy. In the past, most of the employees they empowered were neighborhood housewives, because most of them were no longer working (unemployed), so they could gain some income.
He thought it will be good if we can utilize the waste ourselves in Indonesia because we don't have to go through the complicated bureaucracy, because for him who has experienced the process of exporting a large-scale of waste abroad, he was not only required to managed many documents for the shipping parties, but also to the sanitary, sometimes to Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, their goods must also enter the lab test first, for him it was very complicated.

React native App Development Services
Tumblr media
React native App Development Services from Agicent ?
We used to use various flavors of Javascript long before react native came into being and once it came, we went all big on it. There were times when React-native and other cross platform technologies (like Flutter, Ionic, QT) were only good for creating App MVPs and had a lot of issues such as integration with third party libraries, with Device’s own hardware capabilities and so on. But today as of mid-2022 we can safely say that React Native can help building as good or superior apps as a native tech would do and that do with single coding effort. Its like Java of old days, “Write once, run anywhere”.
Theoretically, an App that you can make in React-native can be created in Flutter or ionic or in native technologies too. However, if we have to rate the cross-platform technologies, react native rules the roost hands down because of its larger community support, flexible frameworks, and capability to generate the native code over other platforms.
Rates for react native App Developers on Demand
Following is the standard rate card for different Exp and skill levels of On Demand Reac Native App Developers. Besides this, we can also create a custom on Demand App Team and optimized the monthly rate based on our specific needs.

BEST Practices followed by Agicent React Native App Development Company
First and foremost, we critically analyze if the App project is a good candidate for cross platform or react native development or not. In some pretty niche Apps, native can still be a technology of choice so ruling out this possibility is most important first step. Once it is identified that react native is the tech of choice, we then figure out the backend stack (like node.js or graphql, or traditional LAMP stack), or web front-end third-party libraries, like vue.js, typescript, redux etc. If it’s a regular kind of app that we do time and again (like a dating app or ecommerce app, or healthcare app) then we decide on tech stack in few hours only; if it is a niche one- of-a-kind project (like an AI based app suggesting you medicine dosage or an App that heavily uses some third- party APIs for its core function – like creating digital avatars or facilitates Holoportation) then we take more than few hours to check on libraries, their scalability with react native and then decide.
Performance optimization, Build optimization
Native applications are top performers because they use stock APIs, patters, and enjoy best support from the OEM’s OS and hardware and you achieve great performance by the virtue of the platform. However, in case of creating a react native app, which is cross platform by the way you have to use a variety of testing tools (like Appium, jest, detox etc), be more meticulous for performance parameters, and optimize your code for best performance across different devices. It can be a time-consuming exercise at times, but totally worth it and warranted.
For react native app development, you have to take care of multi-threading, third party library integration in optimized way, image compression, APK or iPA file size optimization and lot more what you don’t really do when doing native app development.
Limitations of React Native App Development
Lack of native libraries:
If the app has a lot of features, React Native can slow down the development process due to a lack of native libraries and reliance on external, third-party libraries.
Takes more time to initialize:
The issue with React Native is that it takes more time to initialize the runtime for gadgets and devices, mostly because of the JavaScript thread which takes time to initialize.
Excessive Device Support required
Due to the variety of OEM Devices size, Type, Version, and OS Versions, it is challenging for a developer to provide full support to all the app uses in one go, so it becomes sort of a continuous exercise to extend support to more and more devices.
Still in pre-mature face
React native latest version is 0.68 as of June 2022, which shows that it is still in face of evolving which is why it still have lack functionality. Good thing is that it is continuously maturing and have community support with big tech giants like Facebook & tesla also it easy to learn and understand even for the beginner.
React Native Doesn’t Fully Support NFC
NFC enables the communication between nearby devices. But React Native Devices still don’t support or provide full access for NFC communication.
Future of React Native Development
Start-up first choice
Many big names like Facebook, Instagram, tesla and all have an app on react native also react native becomes one of the most discussed libraries on StackOverflow. Most startup and even enterprise start adopting it because it only needs a single manager to manage for both android and IOS app development which save it time, resources and money.
Better integration with Device’s and external Hardware
We are already working on some react native projects where we are interacting with external hardware (using Silabs or infi semiconductors) and have found that react native doesn’t always get priority support, however this is going to be changed in the future. React native will be more scalable and easier to integrate with device’s own hardware as well as external Hardware (Bluetooth, NFC devices).
Open the gate for new open-source frameworks
The domain-specific engineers are meet-up and do conferences in which each platform bring their own player who are working on a similar problem. Like web where react (which power react-native) which commonly draw inspiration from other open-source web frameworks like: Vue, Preact & Svelte. On mobile, React Native was inspired by other open-source mobile frameworks, and we learned from other mobile frameworks built within Facebook.

DUMAGUETE
I booked a flight last December 25, 2022 to Dumaguete for a passport appointment. But unfortunately, the president declared December 26 as a regular holiday so the passport appointment got cancelled. Not to waste our time and money, we just visited some of the famous attractions and one of the best restaurants in the place.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the afternoon, we strolled around Aquino Freedom Park which is just across our accommodation. After we took a lot of pictures, we hailed a tricycle going to Rizal Boulevard and the tricycle driver dropped us off near the street food kiosks. I can’t remember how much money I spent for the street foods but all I can say it’s super “lami” especially the sauce of tempura, fishballs, kikiam and kwek-kwek. I didn’t grow up on street food because my mother told me once when I was in high school not to eat those because it might get me an upset stomach. Hell nah, .eating street foods in Dumaguete was the best.
A walking distance across from the boulevard is Starbucks. I ordered mango mousse cake, java chip frappucino for Ate Che and my favorite — Vanilla Sweet Cream Cold Brew. We stayed there for 30 minutes and then rode back to Aquino Freedom Park for our dinner. For dinner, we just ate chicken bbq, hotdogs, and isaw. After we finished our dinner, we just went back to the hotel and sleep.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The next day, we got up early to start our day of exploration in Valencia. We rode a tricycle going to the jeepney terminal bound for Valencia. We were first to arrive while kuya driver was still fixing some parts of his jeepney. We waited for minutes until it was full. We travelled for less than 30 minutes and arrived at the plaza. We bought some fried chicken and rice and ate our breakfast nearby. After we finished our breakfast, I asked the vendor if there’s someone she knows who can give us a tour around Valencia and luckily, she knew someone. She approached the motorcycle driver and asked him if he can give us a tour and he nodded. He told us that it’s 300 php for 3 places — Sulfur Vent, Red Rock Hot Spring and Pulangbato Twin Falls. Of course, we agreed because it’s the cheapest.
We travelled first to Pulangbato Twin Falls. We just enjoyed taking pictures there. We weren’t able to swim actually because it was raining hard and we didn’t also bring extra clothes. We stayed there for like 20 minutes.
Next stop is Red Rock Hot Spring. The rain stopped and when we arrived at the place, we were shocked because there were a lot of people enjoying the spring. But we just visited this place because of its overlooking mountain view and unique rusty color. We just stayed for 2 minutes because of its crowd. And we didn’t take pictures.
Last stop is Sulfur Vent or Smokey Mountain. Well, I guess this was my favorite out of 3 places. This place is just fascinating regardless of its foul smell yet bearable— volcanic gases emanating from the Earth’s crust. "Sometimes you fall for someone you didn't expect, but that doesn't make it wrong. Doesn't everyone deserve to be happy?"
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We rode back to Valencia and asked the driver to dropped us off at Valencia Public Plaza. We were checking if there’s restaurants nearby but we haven’t found any. So we decided to eat lunch at Sans Rival Bistro. This place is a great value for money and won’t break your bank. "Sometimes you fall for someone you didn't expect, but that doesn't make it wrong. Doesn't everyone deserve to be happy?"

Will Minecraft update on April Fool's Day 2024?
Look, it's going to be April Fool's Day again. The fact that Minecraft's April Fool's Day jokes come true has every Minecraft player looking forward to what's going to happen on April Fool's Day, so let's talk about it:
Before the official start, let's talk about a very interesting little story about April Fool's Day, according to legend, France was the first day of the New Year on April 1 each year, and later in 1564 France started the general Gregorian calendar year, and January 1 of each year as the first day of the New Year. However, due to people's old habits or ignorance, many people still take April 1 as the New Year, so this day is called fool, fool's festival. Various April Fools' Day versions of Minecraft throughout its history.
In 2022, Mojang released a version of the April Fool's Day game called 22w13oneBlockAtATime, which changed many game mechanics, such as the player can directly synthesize items in 3*3 places instead of using the workbench synthesis logic, and can hide directly in wooden barrels without being detected by stealth. You can easily hold the creature on your head, of course, you can also hold the mine car, the end of the crystal, etc., the skeleton wears two telescopes, the block will be blown up, the player and various containers inventory will disappear, the villagers trading without GUI but directly to the money to show him a lot of interesting features. It can be said that 2022 is a rare "full of sincerity" April Fool's Day version in so many years.
In 2021, Mojang released a new game called Minecraft Plus! "April Fool's Day" screen saver, suitable for Windows XP system, including throwing blocks, flying coolie afraid of face, swimming light squid, spread grass blocks and other random screen. It was also a year when Mojang went deep into Microsoft.
In 2019, Mojang claimed to have found an unreleased dust-covered 3D Shareware v1.34 "April Fool's Day" version in a dark corner of the basement during the studio's relocation. This version contains elements of the Mosaic game from the 1990s, adding such fun things as forced Nightmare mode, red and blue keys, and more. But I was finally persuaded by this picture.
In 2015, the first snapshot of the year was an April Fool's Day version of the conventionally named 15w14a, titled "Love and Hugs." Added obsidian ships, pink Minecar, Love hole ships, love arrows that will make creatures reproduce, happy coolies, Pink Witherers, iron puppets of love, flying squid, most damage actions bring health recovery, etc. Maybe it's responding to the theme of love and embrace.
In 2013, the most classic version of April Fool's Day in the history of Java version 2.0, such as TNT half bricks, extinguished torches, stained glass, pink vipers, red stone worms, diamond chickens, exploding furnace, fat eating sheep flying away, talking cubes, and more.
The question is, what will be updated on April Fool's Day this year? Let's wait and see.

Reprogramming the Future: How AI is Redefining Developers and Languages

Reprogramming the Future: How AI is Redefining Developers and Languages
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The era of AI-powered programming is upon us, and it’s not just a supporting act; it’s stealing the limelight. AI is already rewriting the rules of code creation. However, this is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to its potential. In the not-so-distant future, algorithms are poised to eliminate language barriers and radically transform the role of human developers. So, are we witnessing the end of the human programmer as we know it? Let’s find out.
AI’s Impact: Progress and Challenges
The CEO of Stability AI paints a dark picture for programmers, boldly claiming that artificial intelligence will replace them within just five years. OpenAI is going all-in, assembling an “army” of external contractors to supercharge their model training, potentially obliterating entry-level coding jobs. Bloomberg ominously declares that India’s massive pool of 5 million coders is on the brink of an AI jobpocalypse. Despite these dire forecasts, discussions on Reddit suggest that many programmers are nonchalant about their job security. But can we afford to remain so presumptuous in the face of such a radical shift?
If you think AI is just a sideshow, perhaps you should reconsider. It’s true that right now, though AI can mimic the syntax and structure of human-written output, it often struggles to comprehend the “why” behind the “what.” In other words, it lacks a deep understanding of the underlying logic and intent.
Still, already a staggering 92% of US-based developers are embracing AI coding tools, both at work and in their free time. These intelligent algorithms can whip up 40% of your code, from simple scripts to complex ones. Human error is becoming a thing of the past. Development speed is turbocharged, with AI slashing code documentation time by 45-50% and reducing code writing time by 35-45%.
AI’s reach isn’t limited to a single language; it spans them all. Our own data shows that Java, Python, and C++ developers benefit equally from Machinet’s AI chat feature, which can generate code by using the context of a particular project and a description provided. This inclusivity leads to a 25% boost in user engagement.
But let’s not stop there — AI already exposes bugs in applications, ensuring that products are rock-solid, reliable, and robust. Neural networks can scan tirelessly for vulnerabilities that humans might miss. AI is honing its skills to identify software’s soft spots and boost its defenses, bringing us one step closer to a future where human oversight might become obsolete.
AI’s algorithms are even mastering the art of code translation. AI is like a polyglot programmer that analyzes code written in one language, then creates an equivalent version in another. Examples are already there — IBM has recently unveiled its assistant, which uses an AI model to translate COBOL into Java. The question is, who needs human experts or multiple programming languages when AI will finally be able to do it all?
The End of Language Diversity
I am confident that there’s no stopping the rise of Large Language Models like GPT-4. They understand both natural language and code, blurring the boundaries like never before.
AI takeover raises questions about the future of the programming landscape. Today, hundreds of programming languages exist, and new ones are developed regularly. Several are actively used in the industry. According to the PYPL Index, Python is the most popular language worldwide, followed by Java, JavaScript, C# and C/C++. Other data shows that as of 2022, JavaScript was the most common among software developers. Some languages are suitable for similar purposes and applications, Java and GO being one example.
So, will these languages, each with its own niche and purpose, become useless as AI grows increasingly proficient at coding? I believe that AI is on the verge of rendering older, slower, and less secure technologies obsolete. This could potentially lead to a centralization of languages, with only the fastest and most efficient ones enduring. Developers will no longer choose them based on personal preferences or historical codebases. Instead, they will be selected for their performance. AI-driven tools will meticulously analyze and benchmark them to identify the optimal choices for specific tasks. These analyses will take into account factors such as execution speed, memory usage, and scalability.
A central, AI-friendly language for general coding tasks may even emerge. Still, a few specialized ones will have their place in niche domains, such as scientific computing. AI can facilitate their integration when specific problems require their usage. This hybrid approach will combine the efficiency of centralization with the power of specialization, offering flexibility and diversity in the development process.
Legacy Systems in the Crosshairs
AI’s influence extends beyond the creation of new code; it is also a potential legacy-killer. Migration from outdated languages to newer, more efficient ones can be a cumbersome and costly process. Yet, holding onto legacy systems is also a financial burden. Typically, technology teams allocate around 75% of their development budget to maintenance tasks. And if an organization continues to rely on legacy solutions, they can anticipate an annual budget increase of approximately 15%.
This is where AI-driven migration tools step in. They will make it easier for organizations to update their existing software to the optimal languages of this new era. AI-powered products will automatically analyze and understand the intricacies of outdated codebases. They will identify the core functionality, dependencies, and potential issues within the legacy code, making it far easier to plan and execute the migration process.
I even expect AI to identify the most suitable language for a given project and automatically convert the codebase, rewriting sections to adhere to best practices, eliminating redundant or deprecated functions, and optimizing the result for improved performance and security. Like this, AI-driven migration tools will gradually make legacy code a relic of the past.
Will Human Programmers Survive the Revolution?
Eventually, in this AI-dominated landscape, the role of human programmers will transform. Instead of writing code manually, they will bridge the gap between business needs and AI capabilities. They will define objectives, provide feedback, and ensure that the code aligns with their vision. In essence, developers will become “connectors” with basic programming knowledge. At the same time, I can see AI coding assistants evolving into holistic solutions featuring user-friendly interfaces that empower people to effectively communicate their needs to algorithms.
These changes are going to democratize the field of programming. Currently, there are over 26 million software developers worldwide. The advancements in AI are paving the way for billions of people to step into the role of software creators. They will be able to request algorithms to craft tailored applications, be it games or corporate programs. Think about creating a new version of Angry Birds featuring cats? Simply explain your ideas to AI systems and obtain immediate results, without needing to understand how exactly this black box works.
In this context, a pressing question arises: what lies in store for junior and mid-level developers within this emerging paradigm? In my view, not much. AI is poised to outperform them significantly in every aspect. They might find themselves becoming AI supervisors or independently honing their skills, perhaps by engaging in less financially rewarding projects, to attain the proficiency level of well-qualified and high-paid programmers.
The latter group will remain in demand in sectors where errors are costly, and a 5% improvement in accuracy can translate into millions or even billions of savings. These are, for example, high-frequency trading, where a mere 10-millisecond variance can determine profit or loss, banking, and military technology programming.
This shift will create a genuine global competition among programmers. Currently, it operates within a somewhat pseudo-global framework. Unlike musicians competing on platforms like Spotify with peers from across the globe, developers can still primarily focus on local markets and specific tasks. However, the market where AI can manage a substantial share of programming tasks will become hardcore. Being “good enough” will no longer suffice. Programmers will need to strive for excellence to compete with both peers worldwide and AI.

the life update 2.0
the unformatted stream of consciousness edition
i started working on monday. it's alright, been connecting with ppl, not being overly shy but i'm still adjusting to actually working 8 hours straight bc i've been doing legit nothing for 5 months straight. the people at my workplace are nice enough especially the ladies like there's one who i was lowkey scared of bc she kinda has a rbf and just looks so girlboss and professional but i messaged her and we talked and she's actually really nice :) anyway i've had enough work experience being the new guy and onboarding online that i'm not as scared as i would've been + i already know people at this company so i can kinda show my worth from the start
i got my period on friday and i was fucked up yesterday and today from cramps/headache so i got barely anything done so i need to do some work tmr cry T_T i need to remember work is not school i can't just procrastinate everything and i should actually work during and only during work hours. i give myself a pass though bc friday was just awful. also i was supposed to learn python before i started working but i didn't but idk feel like i can wing it there. i already know r and i learned java in highschool so it might actually be a breeze not to toot my own horn but i'm like pretty smart so
it feels like my pms (except its not really pre- more like first/second day of period) symptoms are getting worse the older i get. sometimes the symptoms are okay but more of them are just awful than not. i get really nasty headaches and intense fatigue for one, really bad cramps, joint pain and lower back pain, sometimes my boobs swell up and are really tender (compared to the normal level of tender), i'm either very irritable or sad, i feel like i can't eat and i'm bloated or gassy, i'm like constipated but i also need to shit all the time. like i cannot focus with these conditions. i couldn't this week bc its legit my first week lmao but i might start taking sick days for really bad periods. also maybe bc i took a walk before i started work but my allergies were REALLY bad all day
idk if it's my body aging (which is crazy bc i'm not even 23) or if it's bc i don't exercise as much as i should but idk i still do, like yes i do sit on my ass a LOT but i use the exercise bike a couple times a week and i lift a little bit (not as much as i used to). i haven't been able to go swimming in a while bc i think i had a uti (i didn't bother going to the doctor bc i've gotten 2 in like the last year and i hate taking antibiotics so i was like man lets just wait this out) and now i'm on my period. but other than that i swim pretty frequently.
the only issue w me is i'm a homebody but thats just bc i have almost no friends in my city lmao. esp since n has moved. (i kinda wanna call her but idk our in person chats are always so much better than calls like slight tangent but i can never hear her on the phone lmao)
honestly not mad at it like. did we only talk to each other out of circumstance? i think it's just a fact of life that most of our friends are borne from necessity at work school etc but once that ends only a few of them, maybe 1 or 2, will really stick around. but still like most ppl from uni i just don't think i'll ever talk to again and i wonder if that should matter to me or not. ngl sometimes the loneliness hits me but i don't think i've really lost my social skills in fact i think i've gotten a lot better compared to this time last year like sept 2022 - april 2023 was just a downward spiral for my social skills everything was so hard and my anxiety was prob the worst it had ever been and i wasn't very forgiving of myself. maybe bc i spend a lot of time at home but also i just don't really have a hard time talking to randos on games or in shops or whatever now. idk maybe i give less of a shit now or maybe my solitude is making my ego rise like it tends to.
i heard that was a thing, like if you spend too much time alone your sense of self becomes insanely inflated or deflated there is no middle ground. kinda facts like people are weird
but anyways i feel, for the most part, pretty chill these days. i think i could stand up for myself better now vs in the past. i texted sp again to say like "we should make plans" but i set up the last plan and like i drove her home last time too and we met at this kinda lame plaza bc she had an errand nearby so if she doesn't start the convo this time then i legit can't be arsed like i'll never talk to her again bc i'm gonna return the same effort i get. in fairness she told me that work is really exhausting for her and her commute is ridiculous like she lives by fucking farmland and has to take public transit everywhere bc she doesn't have a car. but we've never been close and i don't think our sense of humour or what we're interested in is all that similar so i get why she's not feelin it honestly me neither. no hard feelings but i will drop her tho.
holy shit this post is loooonggg. i'm not even done writing about shit but i think thats it for the life stuff so i'll make a new one

This might be personal but eh, don't care tho. This just me clearing my phone gallery.
Every year's independence day in my country, president Joko Widodo set up yearly tradition to wear traditional folk clothes around the country. And what's interesting about it was he didn't just wear from Java island only. He's actually tried across Indonesia. He change the formal routine from the past years into a festive flag ceremony. He also created small clothes contest with everyone wore various folk from every region in Indonesia. (Courtesy from: presidenri.go.id)
He wore Tanah Bumbu(South Kalimantan/Borneo)'s folk suit in 2017. Yet his wife wore a different clothes from West Sumatera tho😅
Tumblr media
Wore Linto Baro from Aceh(the furthest west city in Indonesia) in 2018 while his wife wore different suit from Minangkabau (they almost look like creating a wedding photo lol)
Tumblr media
2019 he wore traditional Bali outfit, specifically at Klunkung. And with his cute grandson, Jan Ethes!
Tumblr media
2020, he used Berantai Tarif Nunkolo's woven fabric style from East Nusa Tenggara(near Bali).
Tumblr media
Whereas 2021 he wore a royal Lampung(southern part of Sumatra) outfit, or to be exact "Lampung Pepadun Penyimbang Tetua Adat".
Tumblr media
And this year he wore the outfit from Kasunanan Surakarta(Central Java), to commemorate his birthplace, Solo. Usually this suit, namely "Ageman Songkok Singkepan Ageng", were for leaders in Surakarta Kingdom.
Tumblr media
My fav is the 2022 ver, the only year that he wore a royal suit with cane as one package. And also the year where both president and the first lady were wearing matched pair outfits from Bhuton(A kingdom from South East Sulawesi, East part of Indonesia) called, "Dolomani" . Usually black with hint of gold and for occasion only. But here it's a custom made just for the independence day. (how they look like an absolute king and queen is beyond me)
Tumblr media
And I found it in person!! XD
Tumblr media
I remembered how hype I am watching it live on TV. God the design was astonishing to look at! I love the white details on his sides. Whoever decide the man walk with cane spreading vibe like a king, I salute you. B-)
Bit unfortunate I still couldn't meet him in person, but eh, even if I did, I don't want to ask a selfie with him. I'm already happy watching people done it. Too shy to do that lmao

Haunted Jungle and Sacred Soil: Sacred Practices in Coffee Cultivation
Tumblr media
https://www.indoindians.com/what-is-sesajen-here-are-the-mystical-flowers-of-indonesia/ Despite the haunting, or maybe because of it, there is beauty in the way Indonesian farmers engage with their land. In places like Bondowoso, Java, smallholder farmers are implementing sustainable dry processing methods, such as Natural and Hydro Honey techniques, to reduce environmental harm and respect ancestral cycles. (Irawan et al. 2024, 849–850)
I spoke with one farmer who still performs offerings before the harvest, setting flowers and rice at the base of a banyan tree believed to house a forest spirit. It’s not superstition, he told me. It’s courtesy. “We don’t own the land,” he said, smiling. “We share it.”
In places like Bali and Toraja, rituals are performed at every stage of coffee cultivation, from planting to harvest. These include offerings (sesajen), prayers, and ceremonies to ask permission from land and ancestor spirits. Trees are not always felled freely; some are marked as sacred or believed to be inhabited by spirits that must be appeased. Such practices may seem superstitious, but they represent a sustainable, relational model of agriculture, one where nature is a subject, not an object. (Hayati et al. 2022, 319)
This form of “spiritual ecology” acts as a cultural check on exploitation. Instead of treating soil as dead matter, it sees it as a partner in life. And instead of maximising profit at all costs, these traditions emphasise harmony and community over extraction.
Studies confirm that many farmers in Indonesia combine traditional beliefs with sustainable methods, relying on organic fertilizers, minimising water use, and designing closed-loop systems that reduce emissions. It’s a blend of old and new, ritual and reason, spirit and science. (Irawan et al. 2024, 844–846; 849–850)
Despite these rituals, and ghostly warnings, we saw farmers completely disregard them. It seemed to be the same story, casting aside tradition for monetary gain.
According to a recent life cycle assessment (LCA), even dry processing methods, often praised for using less water, can produce high emissions. For example, lactic fermentation methods for specialty coffee in Bondowoso emitted up to 1.168 kg CO2-eq per kg of coffee powder produced. To make the situation worse, as specialty coffee grows in demand, the pressure to clear land and intensify production risks pushing aside these spiritual practices in favour of short-term gains. (Irawan et al. 2024, 843-846)
The native spirits and warnings seemed to become a counter-narrative. Spirits like Kuntilanak or the guardians of rivers and trees are not just mythical relics; they are ecological memory, reminding us that the land remembers, it hurts and suffers. When modernity forgets, the stories persist to protect what progress might overlook.
Still, despite these instances, we can confirm that in Indonesia, coffee is not just grown, it is negotiated with spirits, harvested with reverence, and shared with caution. Sacred trees may house ghosts. A cry in the night might not be the wind. And before clearing land or planting beans, offerings must be made. These practices reminded us, and should be a lesson for all, that farming is not just technical, it is spiritual. And every bean bears the memory of those who have lived, died, and lingered in the land.
Rather than dismissing these stories as superstition, we might instead see them as a form of ecological conscience, a way to imagine sustainability not only through technology, but through ancestral wisdom. In the haunted highlands of Indonesia, ghosts don’t only haunt, they protect. (Hayati et al. 2022, 319)
