Looking at the Kiss the Villain Playlist: Part 1/14

Power by Isak Danielson: This song is about feeling trapped in a relationship, realizing the other person never really loved you, though you put everything into it. All the narrator wanted was someone to adore them, but realizing this will never happen makes them finally seek liberation from the toxic relationship.

He's My Man by Luvcat: This is a lovely little ballad about a woman who is obsessed with her partner to the point of not wanting to let him leave her side for a single minute. When love and attachment turn into a toxic obsession, it leads to the narrator poisoning the man to make him stay forever.

Daddy Issues by The Neighborhood: This song is about two destructive people in a likely doomed relationship through no fault of their own. Because of their treatment at the hands of their different fathers, they can empathize with each other's pain but are struggling with how to truly trust each other enough to have a real relationship.

Strangers by Ethel Cain: OOOOHHHH BOY! This is a crazy one. Because of Cain's unique vocal style, understanding the lyrics of this song is a bit difficult. Upon first listening, mostly due to the chorus, it can seem like a sadly romantic song about longing for a distant partner. HOWEVER, because this is the last song on a concept album, it is impossible to remove Strangers from the larger narrative of the character, Ethel Cain's, tragic life and eventually horrible end. The album chronicles Ethel's birth into a small town as a respected preacher's daughter, her fleeing her sexually abusive household in search of the stereotypical American Dream, to losing her first and truest love, and finally being abducted, used, abused, and eventually killed and cannibalized by a man named Isaiah. Strangers is about Ethel, now dead, watching on as she is consumed; wavering between her horror at her fate and her lingering desire to still be loved by this horrible man while also addressing her mother, who will never know Ethel's fate. This song and the larger album are genuinely fantastic -especially if you love lyrical analysis.

Apocalypse by Cigarettes After Sex: Finally, a hopeful song! Here, the narrator acknowledges that his new partner has suffered in her past relationships. However, he urges her to let go of the heartbreak, and the fear of feeling let down and to embrace the beauty and pain of a new relationship. Ultimately, it is a song about trust, and how it is needed to let a relationship grow.

So, what can this all tell us?

Well, for one, we can guess that Gareth is in for a hard time. It's clear to me that Gareth suffered his own share of trauma from his childhood with Killian -who I do believe behaved abusively toward him- and the pressure he felt to be the family's Golden Boy. And, considering that Daddy Issues is a song about two people with similar trauma finding comfort with each other, it's possible Kayden understands Gareth's pain and anger. I'm willing to bet that Gareth, probably without wanting to, finds himself drawn to Kayden as a source of comfort and support. Which would be sweet, except that all these songs point to an element of manipulation and misuse of one partner to the other. Now, because of God of War, we know Gareth thankfully won't end up killed and cannibalized by Kayden, but I do wonder if this relationship will have a happy ending.

I just wanted to say that I really liked TSR and how it’s progressing so far. Just one thing when we get isaked do we tell them everything straight away/over the week or so? Except like completely what we did and what happened to us. The woman’s eyes landed on him then, and her brows furrowed lightly as she grinned. “Have I met you before?” she asked in a joking manner. “I don’t think so,” Samir said, “What’s your name?” “Ingalill Nordlund.” Samir thought for a moment, but he couldn’t recall the name at all. Not even when the fog finally cleared. He shook his head, “Doesn’t ring a bell, I’m afraid.”

What-?” he was cut off as something intense surged through him and a bright light flashed before his eyes. It passed quickly, leaving Rei dizzy and slightly disoriented. He stumbled backwards, catching himself on the windowsill. “What the hell?” he groaned and brought his hand up to cradle his forehead— and froze. His room was messier than usual. His dinosaur figurines had fallen off their shelf, the pile of used-but-not-really-dirty clothes had been scattered over the room, and his framed and signed poster of Dia: Awakening was lying face down on the floor. Rei would've rushed to ensure it was still intact, had it not been for the sight of his hand, now clad in a black fingerless glove.

Under a napkin lay a pile of pickles, because there was no Emil to take them when the rest removed them from their burgers. Wrappers and boxes were strewn over their trays without thought, because there was no Tindra to insist on organizing everything.�� Emil was gone in the mirror realm, and Tindra was lying dead in the castle.

👽 The Neon Trilogy

This one is undergoing a massive overhaul, so unfortunately, no snippet here. Instead, I'll be talking about Pearl by Sobi and how it relates to Catalina, André's aunt.

I don't know if I've ever talked about it but... yeah, Catalina isn't André's aunt, nor is she human. She is, however, more or less the sole reason why André is on Earth and still alive, because she was the first to ever view him as a person instead of a weapon. (I'm very emo about it lol)

Pearl is a song about a mother's love for her child, and it's love specifically that sets Catalina apart from Madereine. Where Madereine is André's mother because she created him, Catalina is his mother because she loves him unconditionally and repeatedly puts herself on the line to ensure he's safe.

They're not related and it can be argued that Catalina kidnapped André, but that's her son who deserves to live because he's just a baby <3

Her brows then knit tightly, “Question: has anyone been not hungry as of late?” Nils groaned, “I think I’ve been hungry since Yule.” “Same here,” Heidi sighed, “It’s like nothing I’m eating is doing anything.” Isak felt it'd be redundant to voice his own hunger, but it was there, clawing inside his stomach no matter how much he ate. Isak recalled his mother’s stories about the distinction between her human hunger and her lynx hunger. How she sometimes had to feast as both human and lynx to feel properly fed. But she was a Beast; secondary sensations like that made sense for her. Isak was an Elemental. What kind of secondary hunger could he possibly experience? And that didn’t account for the strangest part of it all— how he never felt fatigued like with typical hunger. He almost felt stronger, more alert.

since I am on a tmtts bender after several years of not thinking of the fic (partly out of hope) but cut to the feeling came on via one of my playlists and I've been itching to analyze it and match it up with tmtts.

Lyric -> How It Maps to Isak

“I had a dream, or was it real? / We crossed the line and it was on”

literally Chapter 1 onward. They crossed the line — enemies turned into something else. what they’re doing means something, it feels like a dream he won’t admit he’s in. he's doing everything he can to prove it doesn’t mean anything

“I've been denying how I feel / You've been denying what you want”

This is the emotional thesis of Isak’s character in tmtts. He uses logic, science, sarcasm to cover the truth: He’s in love, he’s terrified, and he’s pretending it’s “just sex.”

This also maps to Even, who knows what he wants, but holds back to protect Isak. Two people mirroring repression — for different reasons.

I’ve been in hiding, backsliding, keep rewinding”

Isak’s entire emotional M.O. He pulls back the second he gets too close.

Isak’s constant pattern: move close → pull back → pretend nothing happened. It’s a loop. A trap. He’s stuck in emotional reruns.

“I want to cut through the clouds, break the ceiling”

Isak trying to push past his emotional shutdown, but terrified of what’s on the other side. The longing underneath Isak’s denial.

“I want to play where you play, with the angels”

His subconscious awe of Even — the way Even feels transcendent, bright, unreachable.

Could mirror how Isak views Even — light-filled, unreachable, fearless. Isak wants to “play” in that world — to feel free and seen. But he’s still scared of what that would mean.

"I want to wake up with you all in tangles”

The sleepover rule, the longing for emotional intimacy masked as sexual connection. Physical intimacy is fine — but sleeping beside someone? That’s love territory. That’s emotional tangling. That’s the line.

“I want to cut to the feeling”

He wants to be held, be seen, say it out loud — but he keeps stopping himself. The truth behind all of it. They both want to stop pretending. But they’re trapped in cycles of almost.

"No more dreaming of the dead...”

Wanting to move beyond numbness and loss (father, self). Isak’s trauma. His father. His mother. His own depression. He’s trying to move past the numbness — but doesn’t know how.

“I want to cut to the feeling / Oh yeah / I want to cut to the feeling”

The whole fic builds around this desire. They won’t say it — but they want to. Each chapter circles the edge of honesty, but the tension always resets. This line is like an emotional pressure cooker.

"I want to dance on the roof, you and me alone”

Literal rooftop scene. Stargazing. The near-confession. Even says Isak is made of stars. Isak almost lets himself believe it

6 Songs - Alassane Erendse

I have been summoned by @vestigialpersonality to once again inflict my silly little disaster of a guy on the internet, so here we are.

I generally associate Alassane with fast and aggressive synth/electronic music, because it conflicts with the medieval setting of the Forgotten Realms, and makes him come across as a bit unnatural and off-kilter compared to everyone else around him. However, I also just sort of listen to whatever music matches the vibes I’m going for, so it’s more of a mixed bag than anything else. Usually the stuff I have for him is heavily instrumental, because I really don’t naturally engage with lyrics at all. Still, I tried my best.

1) An event that defines your character’s past

Cry Little Sister, by Gerard McMann (Marilyn Manson Cover)

Last fire will rise behind those eyes Black house will rock, blind boys don't lie Immortal fear, that voice so clear Through broken walls, that scream I hear 

Putting aside the fact that I just really like The Lost Boys as a movie, the song is generally about teenage angst and a young person coming face to face with the unknown. The movie it was written for also involves a teenager struggling with feeling like an outsider, falling in with monsters and literally becoming one himself because of his own desire for acceptance, and the consequences of it all as his family is put in active danger. 

I went with the Marilyn Manson cover because it better fits the darker and more aggressive tone I wanted for Alassane. Still, the original also works.

2) How your character sees themselves

All in all, it's safe to say you've gone off the rails Don't try to hide, it's fun to watch it When you do the thing with your lip Tilt your head back, let the ice drip Screaming that you're the shit Take it too far, become that bitch, oh 

This is just really specific to the god complex/self-hatred dynamic of Alassane’s internal conflict, as he has always been his own worst critic. It’s all very reminiscent of his internal monologue. Like he’s saying these things to himself, about himself.

It mostly relates to a specific narrative device that I’ve decided to use with him, where he tries so hard to separate the person he is now from the person he used to be that he’s kind of haunted by his own perception of his pre-amnesia self, which embodies everything he doesn’t want to be and gleefully tears him down emotionally. There’s probably also something about his crippling pride and inability to live up to his own standards.

3) How others view them

Spies, by Coldplay

And the spies came out of the water But you're feelin' so bad 'cause you know That the spies hide out in every corner But you can't touch them, no, 'cause they're all spies They're all spies

 The song in general is a comment on fear and anxiety, the things you can’t escape from, and the existential dread that inspires. But in the end, these fears can’t actually hurt you. This is more specific to the friendships Alassane forms after his amnesia during his tadpole misadventures, but it does kind of encapsulate the feelings I’m trying to get across with his journey and character arc.

4) Their closest relationship (platonic or romantic)

Power, by Isak Danielson

I give my all now, can't you see? Why won't you set me free? You got power, power You got power over me

The song is clearly more about a toxic romantic relationship, but it fits the dynamic between Alassane and Bhaal, which I would say does actually qualify as his closest long-standing relationship. It’s certainly the relationship that most defines Alassane as a person.

5) A major fight scene

The Drain, by Bad Omens

I can't be saved Reaching for the life we threw away Watching as it circles in the drain With everything I loved, that's gone to waste With everything I was but couldn't change

This one is kind of more referencing the fact that Alassane became what he did because he effectively gave up on himself and the idea that he could be anything else. So it kind of makes sense that in a fight, since he’s leaning into the monster he was made into, that the backing track has a sort of aggressive but ultimately hopeless mood.

This just sort of captures Alassane’s internal struggles and overall character arc, I think.

He is not good at this part. His bedside manner left much to be desired, it was the small sliver of humanity left in him, the one who walked the rows of cemeteries and spoke to the dead buried there that offered comfort to people. It's not like it's not heartbreaking to see Asael clutch at him, he just doesn't know how to express it. Especially because he doesn't quite understand why Asael is fighting him so much about this. He's offering help and it's still somehow some kind of argument. He's an interesting specimen. "We're taking this upstairs." It isn't a question and Isak uses the fact that Asael is clinging to his arm to haul him out of the actual office and up the adjacent steps. Except he doesn't walk up the stairs, he just sort of floats up them as per usual, witch in tow. The door to his quarters upstairs opens with a little help from telekinesis and then they're not in the office area and his place in Eterna is very....It was apparent a vampire from Veilcrest lived there. Other people would probably call it gloomy, the color palette deep tones of dark colors. "You were shivering in the alleyway before and after the ice. You have a weak pulse and you seemed both dizzy and on the verge of losing consciousness. All signs of hypothermia." It is but one thing on the long list of things he thinks is probably wrong with the witch, but it's a start, a thread to unravel. "You have to warm up first, we'll go from there." Again it's not a question, it's not an offer, it's somewhat of a command as he leads Asael to the (unnecessarily lavish) bathroom. A little more telekinesis and the knobs on the large tub in the center of the room starts filling with water from the spout. Warm, too hot would be potentially send the witch into shock. "You can let go of me now." He deadpans, looking to where the witch's hand is still over the scar on his wrist. It's uncomfortable, attention brought to something he was self-conscious of.

Teeth clenchend and eyes emblazoned once more, Isak's words triggered an anger response in Asael. "I'm killing myself? I'm lucky?" Labored, uneven breathing rattled his frame as his body tensed to lash out without conscious thought. It was the sight of Isak's scars that caused Asael to hesitate long enough for the migraine brought on by his intense feelings of stress to cause him to clutch his forehead and groan. When he places a hand over Isak's arm, though his fingers curl over the scar, no threads of ice are pulled towards his hand.

"You're wrong! I died beneath the floorboards, then again when I went to the Tower! Everyone who took something from me took my life, and the only times I feel better are when I'm killing them." That is, until he inevitably started vomiting, but he didn't want Isak to think him weak. Every step, breath, and movement Asael made was painful, he'd just learned how to deal with it. He didn't learn because of luck. "Revenge is all I have. Revenge keeps me going. It's not luck, it's strength. Power. And if you help me, I can get more. So please!" Asael didn't beg for anything, but Isak was the first person ever to make him feel better without murder being a factor. Even if it was brief, it felt good to be restored in some small way. Drip, drip, drip... He could hear and feel clearly the phantom blood long dried leaking onto his face from beneath the cracks. Rage and pain caused him to tremble slightly as the frayed edges of his sealed traumas brought fuzzy remembrances to the surface, angering him all over. "Do what it takes. You have to. Or else you're no better than the people I'm after."

So this is a pretty loosey goosey ad and has a lot of wiggle room. Abel is 13y older than Dani and he left home when she was only 5, so after he left what he did and who he was is largely up to you. Their mother was a flighty woman, a woman who rarely if ever settled down for long, so their childhood was spent moving around a lot. Dani didn't have any sort of formal education until she was 12, I wouldn't be surprised if Abel was voided that opportunity as well. When Dani was younger they were both homeschooled while they fluttered around France, they were largely left to be raised by the streets and they did whatever they wanted.

When Dani was 12, a man came into their mother's life who actually stuck around for a few years, Bastian Vega. It was Bastian that Dani chose to stay with and whom she now calls her father, their own father long since having jumped ship. Abel is technically older than Bastian, which made their relationship weird, and where Abel could and maybe should have rightfully hated the man, he was everything Dani needed, the stability and the structure to guide her down a better path than Abel was ever given. Their relationship is strained, though there's no real bad blood there, Abel still isn't all that keen on a man younger than him, playing father to his sister; doubly so as Bastian is chief of police.

Abel was a lot more like their mother than Dani is, and he gets on with her very well and is very close to her where Dani isn't. Dani doesn't hate her by any stretch, she just doesn't agree with the way their mother lives her life and how she left them largely on their own. Abel is also flighty and not the steadiest of people, ruled by his emotions and whims he tends to be brasher and more impulsive than Dani, the aggression and anger he has now was built up when this way of being was thrown headlong into a cage.

Along the way Abel got himself mixed up in slinging drugs (mainly coke, but you can go wild lol), who he was dealing for is up to you, but regardless he was pretty low down on the totem pole when he got picked up by police (again, up to you how this happened) and was charged with possession and intent to distribute. They'd find out while he was sat in jail waiting sentencing that he was embedded into something much larger than himself, and as fae do, he spun a good tale that he thought would get him out of things; spouting off about connections and tossing about street names to intimidate. It didn't work. Instead of getting out of, they tossed him into the prison system without a second thought, mostly this was done to use his self inflated status to get closer to the bigger fish.

After all, if they locked up a friend of said big fish, that fish would surely bail him out, right?

Turns out Abel wasn't as big as he said he was, and now the various secondary charges they've pinned to him, to sink him into the system and make it look like he squealed on the cartel he was working for, have fully dragged him under. He's become just another number in a system that's failing its people. Because of this, he's grown angry and aggressive behind bars. The only thing keeping him grounded in reality is his sister, Dani.

She moved across the country to help support him and has, since his detention, funneled everything she doesn't need to live, into lawyer fees and commissary funds. She's doing everything she can to see him free, while also trying to keep her grasp on the world around her and not lose what she's built for herself. Every other weekend she takes the train north to Fresno, Pleasant Valley State Prison (PVSP), to visit him. While there she always stays with her terrible boyfriend in Fresno, to save money that Abel needs.

Dani's sunny disposition however, has never once faltered and she's far to stubborn to give up on Abel.

Hard to play a man in prison, no?

So here's the deal with Abel in the present: Dani is currently working as a runner for the Cortez cartel, making a trip down to Mexico every few weeks to a month, as she's the most unassuming face they could find... And she asked for their help in protecting Abel on the inside. She was/is the babysitter to Diego & Lenny's daughter, Dia, which mixed her up into things initially. Diego has since sent his brother, Toni, to ensure that Abel's protected inside, and they would have known each other from prison anyway, as Toni was in, and has since gotten out, when Abel went in.

Dani's work within the Cortez cartel is minimal, but it's enough that she's since ensured Abel's release (to happen whenever he's taken). What Abel does within the cartel once he's out is up to you, but he'll basically be conscripted into the cartel, as he's indebted to them. He's very likely to hate that Dani's mixed herself up in all of this, and I'd love it if he did his best to shield her from it going forward... Which will become more difficult as times goes on as she and Toni are all wound up and around one another (and shipped), so it's a losing battle - but I'd love for there to be some tension between them to work through.

I'd also love it if Dani helped him get his GED while he was behind bars, could be part of the time they spent together during visitation; her tutoring him or bringing him fox marbles to help him learn, etc. They are very close and he's pretty different around her than he is anyone else; she's tiny and energetic and full of smiles, it's difficult not to soften around her. She does own a small little townhouse and she's converted the top floor specifically for Abel, when he gets out, though whether she stays there or not is up to you! She's also got a pseudo "brother" he'll have around, Cameron, who was taken in by Bastian as another wayward angry boy. How he feels about this is up to you, but there's another connection for him~
