Oof, I was real bad in school, for a few different reasons. I always excelled in language courses, though - my English (comp, etc) teachers always loved me, and at one point I was taking three language courses in school and studying another on the side. I was also good in math, but my teachers and classmates alike actively disliked me from like grade 6 on, which was really discouraging.

For me, neither. 😬 I have a tendency to hold grudges sometimes if I don’t think the situation has hope of improvement, and up until a few years ago I had an eidetic memory (I do not anymore bc of extended trauma, but I’m gaining the ability to retain memory back, which I’m stoked about.)

I try not to be? Especially at first, I try to be really welcoming and generous and courteous. Mérida is a different place in the winter.

I wake in the morning feeling refreshed and just a little chilly. A morning walk in the summer, spring, and fall would leave me drenched, even if I did make it home by 11am. Today, the 15th of December, the sun is a welcome friend as I walk north up Calle 61 toward the old city arch. It’s that creamsicle orange color they love here, rising into the sky to welcome you to the city center. I bet many hot, tired people on horseback saw this arch (and its sisters) with such relief and happiness in their hearts.

This morning, I FaceTimed my mother at the start of my walk. She had just been to the dentist and had something done on her upper denture, so she had a witchy look to her. I showed her the street and the blue sky dotted with puffy white clouds and she was in heaven.

“Does Lisa live close to a big city?” She asked. “She lives in the heart of the big city! We are walking through the capital city right now,” I told her, brushing the blonde hair away from my face, “the capital of Mexico??” She asked, and I proceeded to tell her how Mexico is divided into states just like the USA, and these states all have capitals, and I was in the capital of the Yucatán. Geography is not my mom’s strong suit, but she is eager to learn and will probably repeat the fact she just learned to her friend (and my Godmother) Felicia, later, over dinner.

I finished my walk and came home to a locked outside glass door, one that we never lock when we leave the house. I quickly found out that while Lisa was out, some workers came to fix the defective water pump. They got scared by the dog, a little schnauzer who can hardly hear but compensates with a very loud bark. The guy outside gladly unlocked the glass door for me and asked if I could take the dog to another part of the house while they worked. “I’m scared of Ajax,” he said plainly, in ok English. I laughed inside because he pronounced it like “A-yax” (the hard J is not a sound the Yucatán people ever use).

So, I am holing up with the dog in the art studio upstairs while the guys work. I am finishing this and then I will work out on the exercise bike, followed by some painting on my new snowy paint by number canvas. I might make tuna salad for lunch. Who knows where the day will take me... lol.
