Dialogue from Korean drama Twinkling Watermelon (2023) episode 10, written by Jin Soowan.
This dialogue aligns with a repeated dialogue I liked in Tomorrow (2022) where they go: There will come a time when you will realise "It was all for today."
this may be an unpopular opinion but personally i think the thing i struggle with regarding the idea of buck and eddie having satisfying romantic arcs apart from each other is that it is possible for sure, but i don't really. see a way for it to happen without some kind of a shift in the relationship they have each other that moves away from the level of intimacy and closeness they have developed over the past six (6!) years.
because, like, obviously you can have meaningful platonic relationships outside of your romantic partner, but even though buck and eddie are not in a romantic relationship their whole deal is also... not platonic. the space that they occupy in each other's lives is. well. it goes beyond friendship (sorry). and as others have pointed out, part of the reason buck and eddie's past relationships (taylor, ana, etc) have felt so lackluster in comparison to their relationship with each other is simply because they just do not have the kind of emotional intimacy with anyone else that they have with each other – and i don't really think you can have it both ways. the relationship buck and eddie have on the show right now can't continue as it is if the goal is to have them both in well-developed, believable romantic relationships apart from each other; something would need to change.
and i mean. they could do this; it's not impossible. but i think would be a mistake, and not just because i think they have a good foundation for a romantic relationship (though i do) – so much of the story they've told with buck and eddie is about two people who were both very alone in different ways meeting and becoming an integral part of each other's lives, and the relationship they have with each other is a really compelling part of the show. so while having them grow apart from that relationship is technically possible, i don't think it would be a good or satisfying choice narratively
Remembering the toxic hellscape that was 2015-2019ish SU fandom and just how much hate the show got is really insane when you rewatch the show after it's been a while. Like the show is good what the hell were any of these people talking about
tell me more about the development/ new clarity of lockwood’s character beyond the charisma & crushing!! like later in the series!! such an interesting train of thought you got there & i Need To Know More
Wait wait hold on let me grab my books because I could write an ESSAY on this!!
(this post turned out really long so i enabled keep reading lol. Tl;dr Lockwood and Lucy both grow a lot when Lucy is gone after THB and that absence fundamentally changes the way that the two interact for the rest of the series.)
kay, we have a distinct shifting in dynamic after the events of THB. Lucy leaving L&Co. and then returning fundamentally altered how they (Lockwood and Lucy) see each other and how they interact. We see Lockwood let Lucy in and be more obvious about his flirting, and we see Lucy start to actually allow herself to think romantic-adjacent thoughts towards Lockwood. Stroud (I think, someone check me on this) mentioned once how it took Lockwood to loose Lucy to really realize how much she meant; this is the moment where that happens. What really embodies this shift are the scene where Lucy leaves the company in THB compared to when Lockwood asks for her help in TCS.
In THB ch. 26 (pg. 372-374 in my version) we get Lucy leaving the team. Lockwood says two very important things here. "I'm surprised to hear that. I thought you and Holly -" is his classic deflection. Reading into it, one sees him knowing what's about to happen, and attempting to diffuse the situation by throwing Lucy's reasoning onto something he thinks he understands. She's leaving because of workplace spats; Holly's relationship with Lucy. Then we get "'Is that it?' Lockwood asked quietly. 'Is that really what this is all about?'" which is where we see him lashing out in a way. He's furious and doesn't know what to do with that emotion. He's been revealing more and more of himself to Lucy through this book, trusting her with his past, and now she's leaving? How dare she? Through this, Lucy doesn't describe what he looks like or what he's doing. She's avoiding him, ignoring him, ignoring any feelings she may have.
Then we get TCS and its only been four months but boy have things changed. Lucy describes his smile in ch. 5 (pg.51) as "warm but somehow hesitant, as if it hadn't been used recently. It was the smile I'd hazily imagined a hundred times; only now it was real, solid, meant just for me." And by god is that a LINE! And there's more quotes I'm not going to put here because this is already so long and then "Lockwood leaned forward, and I noticed a scar on the side of his neck - not large, but white and raised - one I'd never seen before" (pg. 59). And a bunch to read more into and then "I looked over at Lockwood as he sat shoulders-forward, head slightly bowed. He seemed more different than I'd ever seen him: not vulnerable, exactly, but certainly exposed." This whole scene is SO interesting in contrast to the last time we saw Lockwood! He's vulnerable, he clearly misses her, he (likely) is throwing himself Further into danger (see: scar) because she's gone! Its one of the times we see him fully stripped of his ego and charisma (there may be more in THB but I'm only starting my re-read of that now lol). He comes not as a boss, but as a friend, a fellow agent, an equal. Lockwood doesn't give her orders like he does in the earlier books. Things have Changed.
Then we get the first moment she meets the team as a whole again (around pg. 79) and she notices how Lockwood is "making more of an effort than usual" and she questions "For me? No. Penelope Fittes was far more likely." A moment where Lucy almost EXPLICITLY mentions wanting Lockwood to dress up for her? Unheard of before now! This is no longer an unconscious or avoided crush; she's got feelings and she's aware of them at this point.
And don't get me started on the scene with "'What the heck was that?' I said. 'The Shadow?' Lockwood glanced at me from under his bangs. 'Of course the Shadow ....' He shook his head" (pg. 326). I could say SO MUCH about those lines oh my god. The point here, though, is that it's a direct moment where Lockwood is CLEARLY being awkward because they just held hands, his feelings are obvious! He's not perfectly composed and charming! Lucy recognizes this enough to narrate it into the moment! They're awkward about it, and don't verbally communicate it, but they both recognize their own feelings in a way that isn't really seen before TCS!
TCS is also the point where Lockwood becomes Much more open about his past compared to TSS, TWS, and THB. Through Lucy's eyes, he becomes something more than just a charismatic boss who loves the spotlight. She sees his rough edges, his trauma, his flaws. She sees how broken he is, because he is offering the information willingly. We shift from blind admiration and oftentimes annoyance at his inability to open up to a knowing love that we readers love. Yes, Lockwood is still charismatic and Lucy is still crushing on him! But also! He's more human now! And Lucy is not just infatuated in a way she can easily ignore anymore.
Lockwood and Lucy both grow a lot when Lucy is gone after THB and that absence fundamentally changes the way that the two interact for the rest of the series. There's like, a bunch more I want to say and quote but like. This post is already super long so I think I'll leave it there.
hey can raging aphobes get out of the Hazbin fandom please :D /srs
just saw one person try to claim that the scene in the beginning of episode one where Alastor says “not gonna happen” to Angel’s p*rn video suggestion was violating to Angel Dust, not Alastor. they then proceeded to say that “asexuals claiming that this was ‘good ace rep’ are ignoring the blatant wh*rephobia that Alastor is showing in this scene” (not even kidding that is the actual word they used)
maybe? some people??? just don’t like sexual remarks made about them like that????? even if they’re NOT asexual???????
and they seem to be just. incredibly aphobic in general. they seem to disregard the fact that sex-repulsed aces exist (talking about them in quotations “like this” in a derogatory way as if we’re not real) and are really hostile to anyone who tries to reason with them - reblogging their responses with what are practically essays on why THEY’RE right and the other person MUST be wrong
the only thing i hate about getting back into kpop and esp for a group so new and young is that everyone is so cringe.. like it's very obv most of the fans of this group are teenagers or into their early twenties which makes sense given the age of the group itself. but there's so much excessive infantilization and hypersexualization and on top of it on occasion you come across a fancall where a fan is invoking the worst kind of fan service and it's so.. like i know fan service and objectification are the name of the game but i genuinely am interested in groups as singers and performers or even aside from that simply as ordinary people. and i can't imagine getting on a fancall and asking some stupid shit like "do you prefer mommy fans or girlfriend fans 🥺" like omfg ask them what book they're reading or something! ask them for food recommendations! ask them what kind of music they're interested in pursuing in the future!
“I’m excited that listeners will hear Katya’s sections.
I mean I like writing the book, I’m sort of a book fan who happens to write. But Katya’s a really good writer and her sections are like honestly where the book shines.
When I read Katya’s sections of the book, ‘cause I would get her finished sections on the same document, I would cry laugh. I mean they are so so funny. There’s a reason why everyone thinks she’s amazing. She is amazing.” - Trixie
BATIM is officially 6 years old..oh jeez. A little hard to believe it's been this long. Six long years since the little devil that invaded my life was created. Where did the time go? Still,it's cool to see how far it's come. The journey so far has definitely been a rollercoaster of emotions, with ups and downs, but even so,I'm still glad I discovered this little guy. He definitely brought me a lot of good moments in recent times.
I didn't have anything really new or done specifically with the anniversary in mind, but I had this drawing I was trying to finish a while ago that I thought would be nice to post on the day. As we can see, this successively failed.I had the idea for this drawing since 2021, and I tried to execute it at the time, but I never made it past the sketches. Then last year I tried to redo it from scratch and since then I've been trying to finish it and post it on specific dates and failing successively.
But eventually, I manage to find the strength to finally end this piece altogether and put it behind me. The main drawings had been finished for a while,it was just a matter of doing...well,whatever the final result became. I confess that I didn't really know how to do the "broken mirror" idea at the beginning. And that wasn't even the original idea that I have in mind back in 2021.
I'll admit the first time I stopped and looked at the glass cracks I was unsure if I was liking how it was turning out. But it's better than nothing. And at the moment I'm just thinking "Bro, stop. You've done everything you could do in this drawing. It's over. Just let it go". So I'm going to do it.
Oh and Joey is here too,I forgot to mention that. Technically it was also his birthday too. So happy day of birth, pencil man. He's definitely going through something in this drawing.
This was mainly made with one of my AUs in mind and the events that happen in it,but I think if you look at it as something more “canon related” (close to canon?),it might work well too. I think at least.
Better finish this desc before it gets too long. As a bonus, here are the two main drawings I did for this piece, unedited (because I'm not going to show the edited versions,I assume they're kinda ugly separately) :
Call me "Bendy and the Ink Machine Remix and Lyric Video" because I was AHHH AHHH AHHH trying to finish this drawing.
always love to hear your thoughts on media so I’ll humbly ask you to elaborate on your thoughts about ted lasso, but if you don’t have much to say about it either way that’s ok!
i havent seen any of it except for some clips online so i really cannot speak on it properly 😭😭😭 but everything ive seen from it has just been some guy going like “football…. is better with friends :)” and “it’s good…….. to be kind :)” and then it gets ten million emmys and they get to speak at the white house about #mentalhealth. i dont care for tv that wants to Make The World A Better Place and i do not care for jason sudeikis’ cowboy accent platitudes
ive inherited a copy of lolita from my parents (i.e. i stole it from the library in our basement and started treating it like its mine) with the 1989 vintage international cover and i think its actually not that bad. better than the 50th anniversary one with the lips anyway imo (which is the cover for the library ebook vers ive checked out).
like i think any cover that incorporates the "only convincing love story of our generation" quote anywhere kind of sucks on principle, and the fact that it features a photo of a girl at all really goes against nabakovs instructions, but compared to other covers that break those two rules, the haziness of the photo creates a really evocative atmosphere i feel matches the book more or less.
sorry to vague but seeing someone compare Hawk/BJ fans celebrating Mike Farrell’s quote about BJ walking to Maine to queerbaiting and accusing them of “lying” is really putting into perspective the huge divide between my era of fandom and current fandom lol
I cannot imagine seeing people talk about a 70s sitcom and believing there’s any actual gay intent behind it. Like man, only a decade ago all gay readings came with the implicit understanding that it’s all 100% fanon - maybe with intentional subtext behind it in the case of 90s/00s shows, but no one would ever read a post about how gay something is and go “wow you lied, this wasn’t textually gay!”
Like I’m happy for younger people who grew up with gay representation in their fun fandom media, but Mash has none (well aside from Very Special Episode George) and no one involved in the show is ever going to say that they deliberately wrote a downlow gay romance into it lol. The best you’re gonna get is jokes like Alan Alda calling Wayne Rogers a better kisser than Mike Farrell, or the usual “It’s great that gay fans can see themselves in those characters :)” rote statements. And if you expect more than that based on how fans talk about the ships, I really think that’s on you in this case.
And like there are a lot of young Mash fans who do seem to take a lot of the jokes as like... intentional secret gay rep or something, and maybe do think Mike Farrell played BJ as gay lol, and I personally find that take kind of weird and exasperating, but that’s not lying either, that’s just ignorance.
