See someone's got to tell the tale, whether or not it turns out well
Maybe it will turn out this time

So I got to see Hadestown last night, and there was something so wild about hearing the collective gasp of the audience when Orpheus turned around.
I knew what was going to happen, both because I have listened to the original Broadway recording for years and because I've read the tale, but hearing the horrified gasps of the audience rekindled the sorrow of them not making it, that they were so close and still failed because of how much he loved Eurydice.
The sobs and cries of an audience that was freshly (in most cases) realizing the ramifications of Orpheus's choice to turn around were so moving within the context of the story.

The Hadestown syndrome
So I am re-reading the Silm. and I have a lot of:
I know [a terrible thing] will happen, but if I read it enuogh times, maybe it won't?
I know what you are going to do but how about you don't?
No, seriously, stop
If I read it enough times maybe it will somehow get better?

Me saying I'm emotionally equipped to listen to Slipping Through My Fingers by ABBA any time of day is like when my sister said she was emotionally equipped to watch the season 2 finale of Good Omens

I'm still laughing about how when my mom and I saw Hadestown a week ago and we were talking to some random lady at intermission who was apparently having a hard time following the story, my mom was like "It's such a happy story" (not serious) and the lady agreed. And I'm pretty sure she was being completely serious. I really wish I knew how she reacted to the ending. I hope she's okay.

I think I like Hadestown AUs for FF14, especially if they take place in G'raha's timeline, because it gives the Warrior a chance to be saved rather than to be the one to save everyone. Sure, you could write it as the Warrior in the role of Orpheus, there's lots of dead characters that the Warrior could save, but I like the idea of G'raha attempting to save the Warrior of Light in his world.
Because he wants to save that world too. That world might be bereft of hope at first, but if he found out the Warrior somehow survived but was held by the Ascians? He could be the hero he always dreamed about, he could make the reopening of the Crystal Tower an event of Hope and Future in that world, something for the survivors of the Calamity to rally behind.
We're going to save the Warrior of Light who saved our world so many times.
And then, because it really only can end in tragedy, G'raha will fail in that world. He will doubt himself, that he is unworthy of being the hero this world needs, that he is unworthy of standing beside the Warrior of Light, let alone leading them to safety and a new life. G'raha has a lot of self doubt within him. He will doubt he has any right to change the world or save it.
And he will turn, fearing that the Warrior is no longer there. That he failed or was tricked or incapable.
And he will prove himself right. He will become the self fulfilling prophecy
It is because he doubts that the Warrior of Light is lost in that world.
That that world's hope is lost.
He failed to save his Warrior of Light, but there is another chance. If he is willing to stick to his convictions, if he is willing to exchange his own life with theirs, if he can keep moving forward without looking back.
He can give another G'raha and Warrior of Light a chance to live, and he will die, happily, knowing he has made amends and that the future he witnessed won't come to pass. He can carry the burden and expectations of a world lost to darkness and hopelessness.
He can die with that knowledge that he has made things right.
He never expects the people of the First to want him to lead them. In his mind, he's unworthy. So he refuses, he leaves, he wanders, emulating the Warrior in many ways.
And he does save them. He changes the story. He rewrites the tragedy of his own world.

Oh, he said he'd shelter us He said he'd harbor me He said we'd soldier on And then the war would bring us peace We're gonna count to three And then we'll raise our heads, singing One, two, is it true? Is it true, what he said?

So, I'm watching Hadestown
Thank you, @stellavesperis for the rec.
It's giving me feelings. Silm feelings, too. Like, I know B&L weas inspired by Orpheus myth, probably with many things in between, but I have so much Silm in my head that I can't stop thinking "reverse Beren and Luthien"...
But also there are fragments in the text that just --- just
Like a web of stories interconnect, like reflexes form a crystal chandelier... and the recipe for tragedy, at least one of the recipes for tragedy is you have all the right ideas but they just don't work they can't work... And I hear him singing and I'm like "yes this checks out but I'm so sorry my guy it just won't work", it's just... I have feelings about them. I have a lot of feelings.
Some things are just... archetypical i guess? Or maybe I'm just seeing things.
Also, guys not listening to (in this case, literally not hearing) their wives/gfs --- why does this always happen?
The meshing of this myth + Western (for lack of a better word) is done so well. And I love the music style.
Also, now I will imagine Luthien with this exact looks (as Euridice) because it feels like... feels like a kind of retribution.
[also why does Orpheus have such a high voice? I don't like high voices...]

I have a lot of neurodivergent kids in my family. And I’ve worked with a lot professionally. And I often see their parents think the kids don’t want to connect, when they would love to — they just want to do it differently.
If they don’t like jokes and teasing, they might like silly noises or yes-and improv.
If they don’t like playing a competitive or narrative game with toys, they might like to take apart a toy, or sort/stack/line toys up, or get buried under toys.
If they don’t like biking or walking a trail in the woods ‘properly,’ they might like to walk along fallen logs, stand in the creek or look under rocks and leaves for creatures.
If they don’t like hugs and cuddles, they might like to bump shoulders, touch fingers, hand hug, spin around together, or (if they like more intense input) wrestle, push faces together, squeeze each other hard or run into you.
If they don’t like putting on kids’ music in the car or to dance to, they might want to listen to a game or show soundtrack, nature noises, a podcast, binaural beats, house music or metal.
If they don’t like animated movies where sad or scary things happen, they might like younger kids’ gentler shows, or adults’ science and history shows, or live zoo and nature cams.
And so many of them would benefit so much from the adults just slowing down. Not scheduling so much in the day, not rushing them through an activity, not stopping them playing the same song or watching the same bug for an hour, letting them absorb everything their way. Seeing it as a meditation instead of a problem. Joining them there.
And if you were one of those kids being rushed and scolded, trying to make yourself like teasing or competition or intense movies or a full social schedule — I’ve been reparenting myself and you can too. Whenever you notice something isn’t giving you joy — you can do it differently. Not everyone is forcing themselves through things they hate for “fun,” and we don’t have to.

been thinking a lot about Hadestown and its messages this week. . .
If Hadestown has a moral, she says, then it’s “you have to try, you have to have hope, not because success is a given – it’s not. Orpheus fails. We heroicise” – here she breaks off to apologise that jet lag has led to her making up words – “we heroicise Orpheus not because he succeeds but because he tries, and that endeavour alone is worthwhile. How to live, and not merely survive, is to believe things could change.”
Anaïs Mitchell on her musical Hadestown: 'I worked on it so long I was afraid I'd never make another record'
