You could argue that influencers more or less chose to do this though. Truman didn't know and was gaslit the whole time by paid actors. The mental toll it takes on someone would probably be about the same, though.

​influencers themselves, sure - but their kids certainly didn't sign up for this, and aren't old enough to consent to it. the amount of "family" youtube channels that involve staged scenarios, centering on the reactions of children? horrifying.

so many kids now have their entire childhoods broadcast for the entertainment and profits of others, and that kind of shit will fuck them up, especially if the videos are still around when they're adults.

like, I said all sorts of stupid shit when I was a kid! because I was a kid! and if I had had a camera pointed at me 24/7, and a parent that made money off of my actions and reactions, that would have made the experience...hell, pretty much. just, a nightmare world where I could never grow and escape from childhood mistakes, because they'd be preserved for anyone in the world to see.

kids deserve better than this, that's all

Kind of crazy that you can make a piece of media, upload it, and far far away someone can take your media, wipe it of all traces of you, reupload it, and get many more views than you were ever able to. i had this interaction in the dropout discord (i am the first and third person). short. simple. i only got the first year bc of a discount + a gift card i had, so i was planning on using this person's suggestion.

then, i got this.

oh my god!! how nice!! how sweet!!! how thoughtful!! i gave them my email and they sent over a subscription, i thanked them profusely. i was very grateful, very touched.

hours and hours later i was still thinking about it and i recalled how, in the email id gotten about it, it said "tao yang sent you a subscription" and id seen that and thought "oh haha like the tao yang" and then moved on

but now, thinking back, i was like.... theres no way, so i googled tao yang.
