read this book (in a fruitless attempt) to better understand the details of the thirty years’ war and the author gets her digs at these people at every chance she gets:
“In the Louvre the King [Louis XIII] lay on his huge bed day after day, but his unhealthy body, which had for the last years never seemed truly alive, was unable to die. The pulse beat obstinately on in the wasted skeleton. Day after day he lay almost motionless, sometimes sinking into troubled sleep, sometimes half-conscious, sometimes speaking, while his wife cried noisily at his bedside.”
“Richelieu, though never popular, had evoked a certain apprehensive admiration. The people did not feel the same about Cardinal Mazarin. The dapper little Sicilian with his petty personal vanities, his childlike ostentation, his delight in craft and cunning, had few impressive qualities. Equally he had not the comprehensive genius of Richelieu; he never understood or managed to control the internal politics of France.”
“Philip IV, having lost both his wife and only son within a few weeks of each other, began, with indecent haste, to seek out a young bride; he was not a very prepossessing husband, old and glum for his forty-odd years, dumbly stupid; as a ruler, a useless idol. He was devoted only to his one remaining child, the scatter-brained little Infanta who was despite the formalities of Madrid and the splendours of Versailles remained through life a foolish, impulsive, perpetually sweet-tempered schoolgirl.”

Absolutely wild that captain marvel (dc) is mere months younger than THE BATMAN.
Notably, he's also one of the first heroes to have an villain team featuring RECURRING VILLANS as opposed to the previous 'villain of the week' style.
Batman is one of the WORLD LEADING fictional heroes, he's one of the first too. This man has been roaming the streets of Gotham since BEFORE WORLD WAR 2. To hear that shazam was created and debuted mere months later is insane.

Ah, if only we could've had Cedric Hardwicke (1939 movie) as Book! Claude Frollo AND Maurice Sarfati as Jehan Frollo (1956 movie) in the same film. That would've been so perfect.
Also 1956 Clopin is my favourite Clopin ever, wish there were GIFs of him somewhere .

generally speaking, I do take Golden Age comics seriously and engage with them in a way as to extrapolate about the characters’ personalities, and don’t just assume that 40s comics don’t have anything to say. so far I have not really been doing this with 40s Captain America comics, which I think is partially because I’ve already read later-published comics that portrayed the characters with different personalities during this time period, and established a relationship between them and these comics as in-universe fictional portrayals. and then it’s partially because so far it really hasn’t felt like there has been much to work with on this front. but I am still only in Captain America’s first year of publication, so it may be that Steve and Bucky come across as having more depth later on. it just feels like I’ve read more and gone further than I have, relative to their publication history, because they started out in an anthology book with multiple stories starring them per issue, rather than the usual situation of starting out with one story in an anthology book and gaining a starring book later on.

Something I only realized because I think someone pointed it out somewhere, if Professor Layton really took place in the 60s, like with history going as it did in our world, with Curious Village happening in 1960, this means that Hershel Layton himself would have served in World War 2

So once more I decide I'd like to make a fic, and thus start doing research because who knows how far my headcanons will be from canon, and again I find surprising things:
Tumblr media
This? Is the earth sector. It contains the solar system and a few others. Pretty big, but with all our telescopes today it's all well within reach.
Now, that's a lot of sectors! The universe is a big place! Hundreds of planets and civilisations! So where, in all this mess, do you think krypton will be?
Tumblr media
RIGHT NEXT DOOR????
Not even that, it's a lower number! Krypton is closer to the Guardians than we are! We're further in the outskirts of the intergalactic civilisation than krypton??
It's not an empty sector either, far from it! There's at least two other thriving planets in there, one with a peaceful and flourishing green lantern specialising in detecting disasters (I can see why), and another the home of the star sapphires!
(Honestly minus the scattered space debris of what was once an entire hyper advanced species home planet brutally destroyed it sounds a genuinely lovely place to live. A lot more peaceful than its neighbour.)
But krypton is in the Andromeda galaxy... That's so close. The Andromeda galaxy is literally visible from earth to the naked eye. The first recorded photo of it was in the late 1800s. It is THE CLOSEST GALAXY TO THE MILKY WAY.
And superman took a couple decades to travel to earth. Kara took sixty.
Krypton is basically right next to earth and most certainly earth watched it die.

Here is a fun fin-de-siecle Poland fact: Witkacy and Ethel Barrymore of the Hollywood Barrymores had the same godmother and she was renowned Polish stage actress Helena Modrzejewska, known for her Shakespearean roles. This, to me, is Good Internationalism, even if it’s not the political flavor per se but rather Bohemian Upper-Class Socialites Being Six Degrees of Separation at All Times Regardless of Nationality. Six degrees of Kevin Bacon is out, Six degrees of Witkacy is in, baby. How about...The Dybbuk by S. An-sky. There are easier ways to get here but I like to have fun. Wajda and Bryll come up twice because they are ubiquitous:
1. Helena Modrzejewska was Witkacy’s godmother
2. Andrzej Wajda filmed Katyn on her estate in 2006
3. Maja Komorowska was in this film; she was also in Rzecz listopadowa by Ernest Bryll at Teatr Wspolczeszny (under Erwin Axer, who worked with Jelonka at PIST! That opens up another Pandora’s box of connections). Ernest Bryll wrote the Polish-language script for Andrzej Wajda’s (loop back above) adaptation of...
4. The Dybbuk by S. An-sky
Could have avoided Komorowska but she has the same name as Jan from Korzenie and they are an old-old szlachta family and it’s very interesting to me that her father is a count from an aristocratic family and her mother seems to be Jewish and she is intermittently cast in Jewish roles in the PRL, sometimes seeking them out deliberately. Ok

Whenever someone brings up how people are still posting about spn when it ended in 2020 it's just like. And? Idk if you're new here or have never been part of a fandom of a show that's not currently airing, but literally everyone does that with any show or movie or whatever they like on tumblr and in the real world. Nobody's like "sorry for talking about Van Gogh in 2022 but-"
