The choice to put Una Chin-Reily on a Starfleet recruitment poster in the late 2370s seems a nod to the extraordinary person she is and her exemplary service, but Boimler’s enthusiasm for her as a personal hero cannot mask the fact of what Starfleet execs are really doing here: while it is Starfleet tradition to honour esteemed personnel from its centuries of history, we have to look at the poster as a product of its time: it seems clear that, shortly after the devastating death toll and the rapid militarisation of the Dominion War, putting a prominent figure of the Great Exploration Age - and notedly someone who had not served in the Klingon War - as the poster person for Starfleet is an indictment that contemporary young people of the Federation are not drawn to the service as it is in their time anymore.
Critically, Starfleet has to use somebody from a 120 years ago, a timeframe that would lap generations of even especially long lived member species like Vulcans or Denobulans, to attract new recruits.
Boimler says himself that seeing Una as a representative and her motto - “Ad astra per aspera” was: “Uh, it was a really big reason why I joined.” Clearly there is a wealth of recognisable Starfleet officers from 2370 and onwards, but their entanglement in the Dominion War, or at least in the Borg threat makes them unsuitable as role models for people like Boimler who cannot help but associate these contemporaries with the horrors of war and intergalactic conflict.
Thus, the retreat to a “safe” historical narrative, with Starfleet still being about peaceful exploration reflects the growing divide between the realities of a colonised galaxy, the ongoing need of new bodies to fill the posts on all those ships and space stations and the aspirations and values of young people today. In this essay I will question whether Starfleet can keep its promise of scientific integrity in the face of growing political unrest in the UFP and ask what “Number One” herself would have thought about-

What Murderbot said: "I've realized that Iris is ART's Ratthi."
What Murderbot probably meant: "Iris is ART's person-who-is-ready-to-loudly-defend-it-at-a-moment's-notice."
What I heard: "Ratthi is something like a brother to me."

This is some love going out to other people with severe mental/developmental/etc disabilities! I mean severe like, in of need full-time assistance or *a lot* of accommodations. I mean people who legitimately can’t always control or understand their own behaviors. People who cannot live on their own, or maybe can’t make their own decisions. The people who get left out of everything, by everyone, even those who say to support people with stigmatized mental illnesses and not very nice symptoms and behaviors. Because, for all everyone shouts that they support these things - you really show you don’t very often (even on this site). Something people on here still really need to understand and support, is what *serious* and *severe* mental/developmental/etc disability really is.

love how the show was like “no we’re changing the race of the main character to do some deep social commentary instead of the bad dirty racist books!" and then hinges their entire marketing on undermining his narrative, discrediting his story, and making a different race-changed poc into a villain (but for different reasons than he was in the book lmao)
the "who can be trusted with louis' story?" and it's pictures of two white men and an Evil Muslim like. bitch are you actually kidding me.

This is something I want to talk about in a blog I feel needs to be said.
We used to think that syscord servers were a major help since we used to be in one that had ample opportunity to ask other systems about something. And then we realized, it’s not helping at all. We’ve spent so much time telling ourselves we’re fake while being on a syscord server because the fear that even though we know we aren’t, we could be fake claimed at any given chance because something to someone else might not be “normal.”
We would feel like we needed validation for having more brain-mades, having low stress issues, anything. It’s almost like there’s a societal pressure of what is and isn’t “normal” in the system community. You can’t be yourself anymore without someone walking in and saying “You do something differently than I do so you can’t do this” and then saying that you’re not real.
Or how often you have to give your life story to people when that’s dangerous to do. Yes, wanting people to know isn’t a bad thing but it’s almost like trauma is now becoming… competitive. Cringe is posted because why not?
A higher count or lower count can get you faleclaimed. More introjects than brainmades can make you get fakeclaimed.
Why must it be this way? Why can’t we let systems live? Final fusion, functional multiplicity, whatever.
It’s gotten to the point that we have gotten so far into thinking: “Well, what if it’s just roleplay?” and causing us issues especially when we’re alone and still switching or dissociating or whatever. We’ve worried that our month long breakdown of traumatic memories were false because of syscord servers and media intake.
We haven’t been able to properly live without the fear that we have to be a certain way to be able to be considered a system even though we are one.
It’s strange how media of any kind can stop someone from being able to heal and grow and be stuck in the same loop over and over again.
Please stay safe, especially with things like this.
