So, you want to get into Italian Metal?
Who the fuck has ever asked for that? Anyways, here’s some recommendations:
Mortuary Drape
Old School Black Metal band, I highly recommend the albums “All the Witches Dance”, “Tolling 13 Knell”, and “Secret Sudaria”.
Sadist
Excellent Progressive Death Metal. Extremely technical and yet soulful.
Death SS
Despite the unfortunate name, they are NOT Nazis. The “SS” is short for “Steve Sylvester”, as in “The Death of Steve Sylvester”. Now since that’s out of the way, their music is more in the vein of traditional heavy metal with a tinge of doom, that sonically wouldn’t be too unbefitting next to First-Wave Black Metal.
Abysmal Grief
Doom Metal that’s heavily reliant on the “Church Organ” setting on keyboards. If you’re looking for something slow and yet spooky, this might be up your alley (although personally I’d just listen to some of the doomier Type O songs).
Cultus Sanguine
Doom Metal. I like to think of this band as a cousin to Abysmal Grief, in that they’re instrumentally similar with the main difference being the anguished vocals. Same appeal as Abysmal Grief, although the songs do get a bit same-y.
Gargoyle
A mix of extreme metal and traditional doom metal. Would definitely highly recommend. Unfortunately they’re not on Spotify, so I can’t put them on my playlists as much as I’d want to.
That’s all I have for now! You might ask, “Wait, where’s [blank]! They’re widely known and important to the Italian metal scene!” and the answer is they probably suck ass (I’m looking at you, Lacuna Coil). This is mainly just my personal taste, anyways.

This song is from 2011. I think it's beautiful, but my judgement might be clouded. I undoubtedly have about 3 metric tons of nostalgia compressing my judgement whenever I hear this "2000s symph/gothic" style of music. I first heard this particular song a few days ago though.
Also: remember when the "young, up and coming" metal bands were 20 year olds with emo haircuts and not people in their 30s with two decades of formal music training? Not that I mind the extra skill. But I wonder if it might also be partly to blame for how stagnant much of the metal world feels these days. Or maybe I have just heard it all before on account of my own age.

Baby Addams.
Pairing: MaleWednesday x reader.
Warning: Mention of kidnapping, Mention of forced marriage, pregnancy, Yandere Male Wednesday. Gomez and Morticia from 1991. (poor transition Spanish and Italian) If you speak any of these languages feel free to correct me nicely thank you.
Summary: You were Wednesday's wife, with a baby on the way. (sorry summary sucks)
A/n: This is inspired by the story Yandere male Wednesday , by @teresalace I asked her permission so yea. Check out the story.
Tumblr media
Three years, since you met Wednesday, Three years, since he took you away from everything you knew, Three years since you were married into the Addams family, and finally Wednesday had got what he wanted like he always did. You were pregnant, carrying a new addition to your husband's family. Gomez and Morticia were overjoyed about the news.
It was a dim, gloomy morning, and the massive black blanket lay on your growing stomach "Mi alma, wake up." a monotone voice whispered in your ear as you slowly opened your eyes, his plump lips kissed your shoulder, tracing down your arm to your wedding ring, sweet nothing whisper in Italian in Wednesday's normal deadpan voice "My parents are coming." he said getting out of the king bed.
You sighed and sat up as best as you can with a six-month baby bump, the room was dark in aesthetic and semi-normal, with hints of white and a little red amongst the black. The only thing that was out of the ordinary was the large custom guillotine that hung above the bed, which luckily was unable to move, You had to convince and seduce Wednesday for that to happen.
Getting up from bed was somewhat difficult, but you managed to waddle to your shared walking closet, black and bright, warm colors were separated down the middle of the metal bar. You quickly showered and threw on a blue maternity dress, earrings to match, and a necklace. The walk downstairs was a little hard even when Wednesday helped, your home was gothic victorian style like your in-laws but less big. Swords, old timely guns, and torture devices littered the walls as while as mirrors, the rugs were dead animals. The furniture was you guessed black and white with red, and some armor and statues stood around the living room.
You both headed to the kitchen, It was a modern kitchen that your husband allowed you to decorate the only rule? It had to be in his aesthetic which you took. Wednesday leads you to the kitchen island and helped you onto the dark wooden counter stool "Good morning Wednesday" you smiled at him tiredly ready to break the silence "Yes, it is quite a bad morning today." he hummed and sat a glass of water down in front of you and began to make you breakfast. Despite being tricked into this marriage he was a good husband dare you say the best, Yes his..well him, he never made you feel unloved and was surprisingly romantic. The apple didn't fall that far from the tree, though he wasn't over-expressive with his displays of affection. A loud shriek rang out making you jump "I hate that doorbell." you whispered as took a bit of your breakfast that he put down. "I will get it, Mi Alma" he walked out of the kitchen to the front door, Wednesday inhaled, and opened the door. His dad held a brown box and his mother smiled at him "Our boy." She cooed, opening her arms in a grand gesture "Mother, Father. It is a displeasure to see you." Wednesday acknowledged looking boredly between his parents then sharply turned and walked back to the kitchen, Gomez and Morticia headed to the living room the door eerily closing behind them.
You swallowed the last bit of food when Wednesday walked in "Come." he offered his arm, you locked your arm his and hopped off the stool.
"There's the woman who stole our son's black, dead heart and hunts his every tortured thought!" Gomez exclaimed loudly as you walked into the living room, earning a threatening "Father." from Wednesday which Gomez ignored. "Hello dear." Morticia gracefully walked to you, almost appearing to be floating "How far along now?" She asked smiling at you "Six mouths." You smiled back "We wanted to give you this." She looked back at Gomez who held up the box "Shell we look through it together?" She asked pulling you away from Wednesday and to the floor where Gomez sat the box. Morticia opened it and took out stuff one by one "Here's Wednesday Teddy when he was just a little boy." She cooed and passed you a black teddy with stitches, the head ripped off "Cute.." you grimace, sitting it beside you. She pulled out kid-sized knives and swords "Oh this was his favorite toy!" She pulls out a toy guillotine, big enough to chop off a finger or a Barbie's head. 'So the obsession started during childhood. great.' you stared at it hopelessly.
"Son." Gomez touched Wednesday's shoulder both of them watching their wives interact with each other one with joy and the other hiding her disdain poorly. Gomez only got a side-eye look from his son, letting his father know he was listening, eyes back onto you "Let's talk." Gomez pat Wednesday's back and walked across the living to the hallway. Wednesday huffed and walked out.
"What do you so desperately need to talk about?" Wednesday stared his father down, wanting to be back within your essence "Son..are you sure she's the one for you? She doesn't scream...Addams material." "Are you saying you disapprove of her?" "Not exactly-" "Because if you are," Wednesday took a step closer to the older Addams "You will never see me or my children. She is my every soul, she cut open my heart and made me bleed for her. I would walk through heaven and back to please her. I would kill for her," his eyes narrowed "Even if it means you." a pregnant silence fell upon the two. If it was a cartoon you would be able to see a row of dots typing above their heads. Gomez grinned and shook his son back and foe "You have truly found your own Morticia!" he laughed, swung his arm around the tensed Wednesday and walked back into the room.
You yawned as laid back into the bed, your in-laws stayed until the dark of the night arrived. Though weird they were a joy to be around, the love they shared, you had wished for since you were little you had got it from a man who rarely showed emotion but love doesn't have to be over the top, love could be quiet yet meaningful and coming from someone like your husband. It was more special.
"Are you ready Mi alma?" Wednesday asked, pulling you into his embrace, his chin resting on your head, you tried nodded as the lights of the room were turned off by themselves, in the stillness of the dark and at the edge of sleep you whispered a "Te amo." Wednesday allows his lips to curl upward just a bit in the safety of the night "Ti amo"
Transition
Mi alma.
My soul.
Te amo.
I love you.
Ti amo.
I love you in Italian.

Every Lacuna Coil album ranked from worst to best
Tumblr media
9. Shallow Life (2009)
Tumblr media
Lacuna Coil’s fifth album was meant to be a critique on superficiality, but it fell flat musically. Missing the nu metal crunch of predecessor Karmacode and stripped of the opulence that characterised the band’s earlier material, Shallow Life meanders. Though it’s not a complete car crash (Spellbound is an obvious standout), it’s slim pickings.
8. Dark Adrenaline (2012)
Tumblr media
Dark Adrenaline isn’t a terrible album; it’s just an unremarkable one. Meaty opener Trip The Darkness and a cinematic Intoxicated provide the highpoints amongst more generic, forgettable fare. There’s still little here we haven’t heard from the band before, however – plus that truly horrible cover of R.E.M.’s Losing My Religion misses the mark in every way.
7. Broken Crown Halo (2014)
Tumblr media
By the time Lacuna Coil released their seventh album, it felt like they had made the same statement at least three times in a row. The last release to feature the long-term members Cristiano “Pizza” Migliore  (guitars) and Cristiano “Criz” Mozzati (drums), Broken Crown Halo packs more grit and punch than predecessor Dark Adrenaline (Cybersleep and frequent set-closer Nothing Stands In Our Way are the highlights). Yet, there’s still no doubt by this point: the band were treading water.
6. In A Reverie (1999)
Tumblr media
Dreamy, doomy and gothic, Lacuna Coil’s debut has aged very well. Circle, To Myself I Turned and Glass Veins have lost none of their majesty and, while the Italians’ approach at this point is clearly indebted to Paradise Lost and The Gathering’s 1995 album Mandylion, Cristina and Andrea’s serene/raw vocal attack set this bunch apart right from the start. A promising beginning.
5. Karmacode (2006)
Tumblr media
By the mid-2000s, Lacuna Coil had nailed their ethereal goth ways. So, it was a surprise when they changed gears with fourth album Karmacode, introducing a more mainstream, chunky, nu metal-flavoured sound with focus on melody. The move sacrificed much of their splendour and atmospherics, and tracks like The Game and Closer feel a tad too simplistic, but elsewhere, the band proved they had mastered a hook. Their excellent cover of Depeche Mode’s Enjoy The Silence broke them to an even bigger audience, too.
4. Unleashed Memories (2001)
Tumblr media
Lacuna Coil’s second album is an elegant, slow-burning gem. You need to work a little harder to get under the surface of these songs, but once you do, there’s an abundance of gorgeous charms to discover. From the sumptuous and dignified Heir Of A Dying Day to a towering To Live Is To Hide, the still very Paradise Lost-influenced When A Dead Man Walks to the ornate Cold Heritage, the band were evolving at pace.
3. Delirium (2016)
Tumblr media
In their post-Karmacode period, Lacuna Coil had settled into a safe, predictable groove. Then, with eighth album Delirium, they changed their methodology once again. On its release, tracks like Broken Things and Blood, Tears, Dust were dark and dripping with claustrophobic tension. They were startlingly heavy as well, helped in no small part by vocalist Andrea Ferro putting in some of his best guttural vocals to date. Foreboding, haunted and cold, it was the sound of a band renewed.
2. Black Anima (2019)
Tumblr media
Lacuna Coil’s most recent album finds them in fantastic form. Picking up where Delirium left off, the band have only continued to get heavier, leaving the generic, featherlight melodies of their mid-career slump far behind. Packed with atmosphere and highlights in Sword Of Anger and Layers Of Time, it’s not as stark as its predecessor, while the Exorcist vibes of Veneficium are definitely something they should lean into in the future. Whereas Cristina’s piercing vocals are dependably great, pushing her voice to new height on Reckless, the biggest surprise is Andrea,: unrecognisable from the band’s early days, his bowel-rattling vocals takes the band’s stylings to an ever more twisted realm.
1. Comalies (2002)
Tumblr media
Comalies is the moment everything came together for Lacuna Coil in terms of aesthetics and sound, but also songwriting, which took everything up a notch. It was led by two excellent singles: the celestial Swamped and Heaven’s A Lie – which marries an earworm chorus with glossy, apocalyptic grandeur – and broke the band on MTV.
The opus is also a trove of emotionally-charged gems, with Daylight Dancer, Humane, Tight Rope and Entwined all deserving a place on a countdown of the band’s best songs. In 2022, Lacuna Coil celebrated the album’s 20th anniversary by rearranging and re-recording it for a retrospective, Comalies XX, adding a heavier, more ferocious slant to the tracklist. It couldn’t hold a candle to the original, though, which remains a goth metal classic – not to mention the band’s undisputed masterpiece.

Music is super important for me to get into the headspace of characters when writing. I love the Sueco song choice and absolutely agree that the emo sound suits Blitzø. I'm always interested in people sharing their character core music to inspire my rewrite and I love your input on the spike collar. You know Viv used it as this alt aesthetic she thought was cool growing up and you went and turned it into solid characterization. I may just have to steal that lol.
Have at it ! I feel like it makes sense. They both have the “I’ll hurt others before they can hurt me” attitude. Also I 100% am the same I can’t visualise and develop a character mentally without associating them with a song or a musical genre.
Moreover, I feel like some marks are missed with the subculture references. They feel randomly labelled. Loona doesn’t scream “goth” to me, she’s far more adjacent to the loud, violent, unapologetic rebellious attitude of punk. Of course punk and goth are siblings, and then again, punk is just the louder angrier spikier cousin of goth. Loona is 100% punk.
Also Loonas supposed to be…goth but her favourite musician is….verosika? The bubblegum pink pop star? Does Viv not know that there’s a bit more to gothic subculture than just wearing black and being gloomy? I also don’t care for the inference that alternative girls just have father issues.
Also if Octavia is goth it’d make more sense if she listened to metal or evanescence type music. But she likes dubstep, loves bright pink, wears a beanie and has a massive side fringe. This kid is more emo than goth imo.
Back to my obsession with Fizzarolli….why is he performing in a jazzy nightclub?? 😭 Jazz?? Fizz???his favourite star was Mammon, he makes the metal signal 🤘 he performa Italian opera, which I théorise to be his family origin. And those few seconds of death metal in Look At This were really exciting.
Actually if anyone can tell me what type of singing he’s doing in Look at This and the start of 2 minutes notice I’d love to know. I cant quite put my finger on what the accordion and intense way of singing is…I just know it’s Italian.

Typography Tuesday
This week we present a variety of Gothic letter forms from American architect Frank Chouteau Brown’s manual Letters & Lettering; A Treatise with 200 Examples, originally published in Boston by Bates & Guild in 1902. Our copy is a later printing published in 1914. The very first metal types were Gothic forms developed in Germany in the 15th century, and the Gothic remained the principal form to encode the German language until the early 1940s. Today, it is almost entirely used as a display face.
Shown here are designs devised by the German artist Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528), the Italian calligrapher and writing master Giovanni Antonio Tagliente (1468-1527), Italian calligrapher Giovanni Battista Palatino (c.1515 - c.1575), German calligrapher Paul Franck (fl.1600-1655), and one by Frank Chouteau Brown himself. Of the Gothic form, Brown writes:
Unlike Roman letters, which attained a complete and final development, Gothic letters never reached authoritative and definitive forms, any more than did Gothic architecture. Every individual Gothic letter has several quasi-authoritative shapes. . . . yet this very variability and variety constitute at once the peculiar beauty of Gothic and the great difficulty of so drawing it as to preserve its distinctive character.
Our copy of Letters & Lettering belonged to the English-American artist, graphic designer, and silk-screen printing pioneer Max Arthur Cohn, and was donated to us by his daughter Jane Waldbaum, professor emerita of Art History here at UWM.

SHINY COLORS FASHION ANALYSIS - L’Antica (アンティーカ)
Tumblr media
"Turn the Rusted Key of Fate"
This is a project analyzing and taking a look at the fashion design and application in the multimedia series, The IDOLM@STER: Shiny Colors. This section is about the gothic themed unit of the series, L'Antica! If you want to jump to a specific section, go here!
(This is a reprint of my thread on Twitter. I put it on Tumblr for easier reading and for archiving purposes. Enjoy!)
-----
INTRODUCTION
Tumblr media
A revolutionary unit of the New World. The flame smoldering in their hearts become a “Song,” their lonely tears become a “Wish.” Clad in gothic dresses, they sing on for hope.
Members (from left to right):
Yuika Mitsumine (三峰結華)
Mamimi Tanaka (田中摩美々)
Kogane Tsukioka (月岡恋鐘) [center/leader]
Sakuya Shirase (白瀬咲耶)
Kiriko Yukoku (幽谷霧子)
---
L’Antica (the Italian feminine form of “antique”) is an elegant & dark vocal unit that specializes in symphonic metal music. Their overall aesthetic & costumes incorporate Gothic and Victorian-era concepts, steampunk, and prominently features of other eras of history.
Tumblr media
In Shiny Colors, all units are represented by a color of the rainbow. L’Antica’s color is a deep purple that mirrors their Gothic aesthetic. It’s a color full of mystery, intrigue, darkness, and emotion which perfectly encapsulates their music and overall concept.
Tumblr media
Rather than their costumes having heavy symbolism like illumination STARS, L’Antica’s costumes are more clearly defined by their style inspirations. As per their name, their costumes are influenced primarily by 18th-20th century Western artistic movements.
Gothic refers to an artistic movement around the mid-late 1700s inspired by 12th-century architecture, a popular setting for Gothic fiction. It combines the supernatural, macabre & dark aura of Gothic literature with innate symbolism standing for psychological or social conflict.
Tumblr media
The Gothic influence can clearly be seen in their costumes, featuring dark color palettes, Gothic lolita elements like ruffled skirts, and mysterious, sublime settings of supernatural or haunting concepts. Their costumes immerse the viewer in different strange worlds every time.
---
The Victorian Era refers to the period of British culture under the reign of Queen Victoria (1830s-1900s), a popular historical aesthetic due to its iconic upper-class fashion & culture. It’s also an era of revivalism, related to movements like Neoclassicism & Rococo Revival.
Tumblr media
Another revival movement that took place is the Gothic Revival, which brought back Gothic architecture and literature into popular culture mixed with values of sentimentalism. As such, Victorian Gothic art has a preoccupation with tragic beauty and symbology for loss and death.
Tumblr media
A handful of L’Antica costumes are very inspired by Victorian-era fashion, culture, and art as well as elements of Gothic Revival; more details will be expanded upon in their individual sections.
---
Tumblr media
The most notable aesthetic that L’Antica takes inspiration from is steampunk, a genre of science fiction that imagines an alternate future with heavy use of steam engine or spring power and maintaining of Victorian-era visuals.
Tumblr media
Other than their main/first unit costumes being heavily steampunk-inspired, it has heavy theming in almost all of their unit costumes; even their logo is a common steampunk element, a key in the shape of a gear.
Perhaps inspired by the Victorian Era being one of revivalism, a handful of L’Antica’s costumes are inspired by other Western/European historical eras. Additionally, eclecticism was a prominent concept during this time, mixing several stylistic influences to make unique designs.
-----
Symphonic Steam (シンフォニックスチーム)
Tumblr media
“Symphonic Steam” is L’Antica’s main unit costume and is the most representative of their concept and aesthetic, featuring heavy Gothic and steampunk motifs. The name references them being a primarily steampunk-themed idol group.
Tumblr media
The animation features the five girls inside and outside of a clocktower. The clocktower shares many features with real life Gothic Revival architecture, including steep roofs, pointed arches, ornate & lacey trims, and overall picturesque design.
Tumblr media
The key points of “Symphonic Steam” are related to its major style inspirations, namely steampunk, Victorian Gothic, and Gothic lolita detailing. As this is their main costume, it greatly encapsulates their main influences and overall dark and esoteric feel of their music.
Tumblr media
As with many idol costumes, “Symphonic Steam” uses the “similar look” concept to make L’Antica look cohesive & thematically the same while bringing out each of the members’ individuality. This graphics shows some key differences between them, revealing a bit of their character.
Just like their costumes, the animation also shows them in different places or doing different action in/on the clocktower to show off their personalities.
Kgane is center of the clocktower (center/leader), Mamimi is lounging inside (lazy, coy), Sakuya is posing outside (serious, model-like), Mitsumine is on top throwing her pocketwatch (smart, eccentric), and Kiriko is caged, riding to the top (fantastical, dream-like).
---
Faith of Treasure (フェイスオブトレジャー)
Tumblr media
“Faith of Treasure” is L’Antica’s second unit costume. Like “Symphonic Steam,” this costume has very heavy steampunk theming. As such, the idols are acting as treasure hunters in an anachronistic Victorian city with steam technology.
Tumblr media
Comparing “Symphonic Steam” to “Faith of Treasure,” both costume sport heavy steampunk theming. However, “Face of Treasure” is much lighter and fun in nature, leaning more science fiction/Victorian, while “Symphonic Steam” is dark and moodier, leaning more Gothic.
Tumblr media
The key points of “Faith of Treasure” are its strong steampunk and Victorian stylistic influence as seen in the graphic. Additionally, the costumes suit their role as treasure hunters with the accessories and accents seen all over their bodies.
Along with the costumes, their animations point to each of the members being in a specialized role in their treasure hunter team.
Tumblr media
Mamimi is a thief, having clothes with easy mobility, a gas mask for protection, and running with a bag. Sakuya is a fancy aeronaut with her sleek dress providing little resistance as she flies through the air. Yuika is a pilot or mechanic with her goggles & tinkerer’s tools.
Kiriko is just a citizen as her design is doesn’t have as many details as the other girls, having bourgeoisie details like her cravat & simple dress. Kogane has a gun & a larger sack; along with the items seen in the beginning with the map, she’s probably the leader.
---
La Rosso Grimm (ラ・ロッソグリム)
Tumblr media
Translating from Italian to “The Red Grimm,” “La Rosso Grim” is L’Antica’s third unit costume. Taking a step away from steampunk, this costume set is heavily based on Grimms’ Fairy Tales and Gothic fiction.
Tumblr media
The setting for “La Rosso Grimm” takes place in a Gothic castle where “five girls are lost,” with the live stage being a replica of the castle and its yard. Gothic castles were a popular setting for Gothic fiction as well as Grimms’ fairy tales due to its mystery & royal nature.
Tumblr media
In fact, all of the animations for these costumes have an opening scene that mimics a fairy-tale passage with the mystery and darkness of Gothic fiction. These passages are also directly based off of Grimms’ fairy tales, like “The Raven,” “Snow White,” and “Cinderella.”
Tumblr media
However, the biggest fairy tale influence that “La Rosso Grimm” uses is “Little Red Riding Hood.” Besides the obvious name allusion (“The Red Grimm”), the costumes have a hood, the setting is a castle in the tangled woods, and the members pose with wolves in their album cover.
Tumblr media
Key points of this costume include steampunk elements as usual (but moreso as accents), a heavier Gothic and punkish influence, and “Little Red Riding Hood” theming in their construction and details.
