Markiplier manor is toxic here’s why

So Markiplier manor (Markipliers official discord server) has gotten a surplus of new people in it, this happened a few weeks ago the manor itself though has been up for awhile. originally a members only server it was eventually opened up for everyone and yes there are alot of genuinely good people and the mods are alright but unfortunately its becoming a toxic environment.

SO EDIT i have discussed with the mods that being said ... im keeping this up as a reminder of we can do better we can help people who are struggling through something instead of shutting them down we can listen to people who are being oppressed and bravely point out new media that only worsens that oppression and stigmatization and not just the mods who i was kind of harsh towards but who are human everyone as a community can do better and this is a large community think of the work we can do just doing the basics like boycotting problematic content and helping those who cry out for it who need it (and noticing and shutting down manipulative/toxic behaviors) ... i dont know if im going to go back to the manor yet tho im going to let this sit give it a week yall can agree or disagree but know that if you try to be an ass your going to get shut down and your feelings are going to get hurt

lets start with the basics “triggering topics” triggering topics can be anything in particular but it generally means a topic that relates to another persons trauma. Now while it is important to acknowledge a persons trigger words and try to keep the conversation respectable ive also noticed people use it to shut down people who come on freaking out because their dealing with a stressful situation/something traumatic just happened. This has happened to me personally and to a friend with me it was about being pro choice and having to in short make that actual choice. i was discussing this in the bathroom because i (like anyone else who comes in with baggage) did not know about any pro choice discords at that moment and was afraid of being stigmatized or going onto a discord that says its a safe space only for it to be filled with trolls. Mark manor is labeled as a safe space and many people come on there looking for support with me no one told me that the topic was triggering to them (which apparently it was because a friend of theirs had to make the choice not her herself think what you will) they just went to a mod early on when i just found the server as a member a friend (who i wont name) had gotten.... assaulted majority of her werent online and as someone who has been there and yes when she told me it did trigger my own trauma she needed moral support... the mod shut her down and deleted her comments and didnt give her a pointer to any other discord where she could discuss the topic openly and get moral support and be pointed to resources (it actually took me ten minutes to find and confirm a lgbtq therapy chat earlier this year for another individual discussing mental health) this was before i had gotten on for that day but i noticed those messages and i contacted her when she told me what was up yea it triggered my memories and its not fun but I FUCKING HELPED HER i made sure she went to the police to atleast file a statement (while the police dont always help it is good to have it on file) i even made her a plush and shipped it out to her and i would do it again and again because its not good to basically tell another person to shut up because it triggers others not without atleast trying to help them find another fucking place and making sure their actually ok and in a physical safe place next is them claiming the manor is a “safe space” a safe space is by definition “ a place or environment in which a person or category of people can feel confident that they will not be exposed to discrimination, criticism, harassment, or any other emotional or physical harm.” you would also think that the manor would be a safe space in the fact that marginalized and oppressed groups of people would be able to point out problematic content and have an open and free discussion about it and how it makes them uncomfortable. especially people of lgbtq community which alot of people in that chat are. yesterday (and this was what caused me to officially turn away from the server) in the patio (which is the members only chat) a Transgender individual pointed out the problematic content that is huniepop and how it fetishizes trans people as well as other minorities now this game i hear tries to make itself out as a “parody” .... its not its a sexual dating sim what would make it a parody is if sex noises were replaced with donkey sounds and the lewd pictures were replaced with poorly drawn doodles of tits or what have you its a game for incels marks hilarious when he plays it because he doesnt take the game seriously my issue isnt with him its with the developer. and if you did not know (which apparently people dont) the character poli is described as “a girl with a dick” the individual pointed this out because they felt like it dehumanizes them and paints them as nothing more than a fetish... and also apparently you can “choose” is poli is trans which kind of gives off the message that people can ignore trans peoples identity if it makes them uncomfortable... or if they dont sexualize them. and the muslim community is more or less in the same boat i come from the bible belt in usa im not muslim i am not trans but i do have a reason for standing with both and i will get to that in a bit so i was raised in a christian household in a christian setting like muslim women were basically told we cannot have sex and any sexual thought is sinful and we will be punished blah blah blah your even more closeted if your gay or bi because then you can face ... violence that being said to make the woman from the middle east hyper sexual like they did is kind of shitty even for a incel pleasing sex game. the individual who thought it would be ok to discuss this in the server because its labeled as a safe space and is generally “lgbtq” friendly thus believing he would have people agree and discuss ... was unceremoniously shut down by their peers and a mod was notified this person was not hostile maybe a bit frustrated because he wanted to talk about it and thought he would have this genuinely helpful conversation and people would listen and spread the word because to have problematic content be popular can isolate the oppressed group even more so WHEN NO ONE WANTS TO LISTEN TO THEM. if a group of marginalized people notice something problematic with content and you claim to be an ally of said group then you need to acknowledge and support what they say. they told him to go to twitter where he could potentially be bullied and written off ... because again its an INCEL PLEASING SEX GAME.(which means incels if you ever dealt with them will go and say anything to justify the game even using slurs and bullying) and to put the icing on the cake to change the topic they brought up robin ... i actually dont know who robin is as i dont really focus much on youtube creators personal stuff (it feels off for me to not personally know an individual but know their personal stuff without having actually talking to them its weird i know its a thing i have in my head) but apparently they recently came out as female and good for them im super proud of him and the patio members were discussing how they were proud of him as well for beginning to wear makeup and making themselves more feminine which would be great if they werent trying so hard to shut down the trans male who was trying to spread awareness on problematic stuff .... something he pointed out ... and something they gaslighted and said he was being hostile. really its almost as if they only care about trans issues when its someone famous discussing them so what can we possibly do about huniepop being transphobic and the answer is very easy BOYCOTT IT like... yall were up in arms and boycotted jk rowling with snap and a turn do we only cancel the old and ugly? do we only cancel those who we dont think is funny? mark is not at fault he probably doesnt realize it and any comments made on the issue are talked down upon or drowned amongst other comments im not saying to cancel him im saying to cancel the game HARD. ignore the posts bitch at the dev demand refunds for your game. like consumers have infinitely more power than corps want to admit. so you basically have a community that claims to be a safe space but only if you want to talk about sunshine and rainbows and its highly hypocritical of them to claim safety. another thing is emotionally abusive/manipulative people hide in the server and the mods dont ever seem to acknowledge it. i cannot tell you how many times ive gotten into arguments with people who seems nice then turn into assholes then claim to be the victim when i or others go off on them. if you recognize my name you know i dont stand down when it comes to having a snarky or rude comment thrown at me if your going to be an ass were fighting i dont care how nice you seemed beforehand and you dont get to call a mod just because i actually stood up for myself or others sorry not sorry dont be a bitch nuff said. now why would i care so much about problematic content? why would i care and stand by the transgender and muslim people (aside from being ya know... an actual ally and not someone who claims it for sympathy and brownie points?) its because i am autistic i am also able to function well on my own but there is a movie created by the famous singer sia it is called music it is a movie frowned upon by the autisitic community because infantizes and dehumanizes non verbal autistic people i am fortunate and unfortunate in not having to deal with much stigma unfortunate because i wasnt diagnosed until i was 17 alot of answers about my behavior could have been answered if i had been diagnosed earlier but considering society loves the quiet timid female and i functioned “well” for neurotypicals i was ignored. so yea you bet your ass im standing with them and raising awareness about huniepop and their was this one person when i mentioned this point i cant remember there name nor to do i give a shit about them because when i mentioned how autistic people ... how i was in the same boat with music by sia (again i advise that no one target the actress who was under contract target sia and please boycott her so she knows she cant get brownie points or money for a movie that stigmatizes who she claims she wants to “help” (*cough* profit off of *cough cough*) and only serves as a feel good movie for neurotypicals and ignorant people) they said “i heard people who hated the movie i heard people who found it alright people are ALLOWED to like problematic content” ... and like ... does anyone else see the problem here? its not hard at all to boycott celebrities for making content and im going to repeat this point IF A GROUP OF MARGINALIZED, STIGMITIZED AND OPPRESSED PEOPLE CALL OUT SOMETHING FOR BEING PROBLEMATIC AND YOU CLAIM TO BE AN ALLY YOU FUCKING LISTEN TO THEM AND DONT SHUT THEM DOWN I DONT GIVE A SHIT YOU DONT HAVE A FUCKING EXCUSE. if you cant bring yourself to boycott a piece of media and replace it with the infinitely more suitable forms that supports the group you claim to be for your not an ally your a fucking hypocrite and that is why i left markiplier manor i am still a youtube special ... thingy member and i will continue to be a member to support mark i want people to overall listen to those who speak up against a creator and a piece of media and listen to us all no matter how “good” something seems. .. also there is a video called listen it was created by nonverbal autistic people and communicationFIRST a group that sia apparently communicated with favorite kpop songs of 2017 from a fan who got into kpop the beginning of this year

aye!! 2018 is almost here, and i have been DYING to make a favorite songs/mvs in kpop of this year thing. it has been a fucking ride let me tell you.... first things first, just to celebrate this year and give myself some leeway, there will be 17 songs!! and they are in no particular order!! i am not a favorites person, i have too much love in my pitiful heart.... anyway, lets start!!

17. movie - btob (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=42A-rFdralM) there are many things i love about this song. i got into kpop quite literally the very beginning of this year, and thats wild, but this song was one of the first of many i had heard, and didnt know much about then but love now. i specifically remember going through that one hot 100 kpop song playlist on youtube and finding this one, and instantly love it. its one of the classics of this years, and def opened my mind to a lot more.

ok, i had a hard time on this one. its common knowledge they went through 3 major comebacks this year, all of which were amazing, but originally, beautiful is what stuck with me. i love the heck out of that song. then dramarama dropped a little over a month ago and... lets just say thats what convinced me to finally start stanning them for real. i have a thing for story driven music videos (bonus points if the story is actually mad good), so combine that with the absolutely amazing song and choreography, and you get their best comeback yet. honestly, it was so good, i urge yall to check it out if you havent.

ok the best part about this one was... since i was a new baby fan, at the time, the only group i really like, stanned, was bts. but i wasnt shut off from the rest of the music community tho, ofc. thats what im truly into kpop for: the music. so duh, i knew about blackpink and their bops (whistle was a personal favorite of mine). but for some reason, over time, they casually just became another group i was into? like, i knew the names, voices, roles, songs, etc.. so when i heard they were having a summer comeback, while i was free from school no less, i was ecstatic. i rewatched the teaser several times, stayed up and hyped with people online. and it finally dropped and instantly became my favorite song by them. its so goooood. my wife lisa, like, yas baby slay that rap while looking cute af. i love it very much, and im sure other blinks do too.

THAT IS AN AMAZING SONG AND IM STILL SO PROUD OF BOTH OF THEM. but bitch, this had dropped sometime whenever, idk when since i dont stan and her, and i saw it on youtube and thought ‘shes the suga girl, i wonder if thisll be good’. i was so surprised when i listened to it. the music video?? snatched. the song?? snatched. wig?? bitch its gone. lets just say, first listen, i had already loved it way more than the song i originally knew her by.

i put this one off long enough too. and this is obviously a very split opinion. they also dropped night rather than day which i am also 100% over the moon for. but god, i love sexy exid. and that is exactly what this comeback was. sexy, powerful, and aesthetically catchy as hell. (btw, exid is another group i actually stan, so i had been anticipating this one; i watched it while i was at school dusbgukg). so sad solji couldnt physically make it this comeback, but she was in the album, and that was enough for us. still wishing her the best recovery!

ANYWAY. im gonna be totally honest, i really love their 2016 year in terms of music more than i did this one (lotto, lucky one, monster, etc., etc., etc.,) BUT! out of the comebacks they had this year, i am 100% 10x more into ko ko bop. not gonna lie, i didnt dig it at first listen. but a little later, i tried it again and... hooo boy, what a good song. i dont know anything knowledge based about music or music production, but i know that ko ko bop is a good song. very good.

OK! so... yall gonna hate me, but i intentionally put off listening to this for the longest time. why?? i have no clue, its a great song. but i did. so by the time mama 2017 (IK THAT LATE) came around and i found out my boy taemin would be doing a collab stage with sunmi i was like... ‘ok i need to know who this girl is...’ i FINALLY sat my butt down and watched it and BITCH. okokokok, scroll back up, skim that taemin one, and imagine all those feelings, except like, gay. like, instead of thinking it was inspiring, i was just thirsting and being absolutely in love because holy shit everything about the song and the video are perfect????? THE LYRICS THOUGH TOO??? absolute women power i was 100% there for jesus christ. 왜 예쁜 날 두고 가시나~ 2. snow - zion.t (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fiGSDywrX1Y) this song made me cry :( straight up, when i first watched it, i cried so much. it got even worse the second go round when i knew the lyrics. its so.... beautiful. im a big fan of zion.t as well, so this was no disappoint for me. i luv it... and fun fact, its my favorite music video ever, kpop or not. im very into cinematography and photography so it was such a treat to watch it. youd have to watch it for yourself to know what i was talking about.

well, thats all of them! keep in mind, this is a personal opinion thing, and there many, many, MANY songs of this year i loved, but this is a list and its gotta end somewhere, so i chose the ones that really stood out to ME. this was probably a waste of time, and bet this gets no notes, but in my heart, it was worth it. i love writing and ranting out my thoughts. this was my first year in kpop, and while yes, there were a few devastating and heart breaking moments that im still not fine about, it was good. my friends are gonna hate me, but this is just one of many years to come of me being into this shit. hope next year delivers as good as this one did. happy new years kpop fans!

Long answer, it’s under the cut

Hi. No need to apologize. Let me give you one of my classic, incredibly long answers where I say the same thing a hundred different ways and do minimal editing before I post it.

ECT is a lot to think about, and I don’t feel that I was given the proper amount of information to make a well-rounded decision at the time. In addition to this, if you search online, you’ll find a lot of people writing about their personal experiences. These can be intimidating, as the accounts that appear online are often the very negative ones, where people feel they were pressured into the treatment and/or sustained significant memory impairment afterwards. You’ll find people comparing ECT to lobotomies, and saying it shouldn’t be allowed except in the most extreme of cases. I truly don’t believe that those accounts accurately represent the procedure, but I do recommend you read a few, so that you’re aware of the kind of worst-case scenarios that hospitals won’t tell you about. I can give you an overview of my experience, and list what I believe are the main things that are important to consider before you make any decisions. My biggest recommendations are that you a) gather as much information as you possibly can, and b) try TMS first. I’ll talk a little more about TMS later on.

I got a course of ECT starting at the tail end of an inpatient stay at McLean hospital, through a 2-week residential DBT program on the same campus, and after I went home as well. I don’t recall exactly how many treatments I was intended to get; I got quite a ways in, but didn’t end up finishing the entire course.I was 19 at the time. Some of the patients in my inpatient ward felt that the hospital was a little too enthusiastic about performing ECT - while their treatment providers weren’t pushy per se, they suggested it to a lot of patients, and didn’t seem to share the typical view of ECT as a last or extreme resort that many treatment providers have.

McLean - while certainly not perfect - is considered one of the best psychiatric hospitals in the country, and is very much oriented towards research and trying out new and modern techniques. As such, they’re more than happy to sign up patients for ECT and TMS (which is a less extreme option that I’ll bring up later). My memory is foggy, but I definitely remember taking several surveys and approving them to be used for research purposes.

I specifically asked for ECT, because I was feeling desperate after two previous hospitalizations and a long list of failed medications. They gave me a basic overview of ECT and TMS, and signed me up immediately once I confirmed that I did want ECT.

The hospital absolutely did not give me enough information. I don’t think they fully conveyed the risks, and I think they are far too eager to sign up anyone with any interest in ECT as long as they’re old enough to medically consent. I was 19 for christs sake, and no one asked me twice. Honestly, even if they had properly prepared me, I probably still would have chosen to go forward with it, but that’s not an excuse. And when I say I feel like I wasn’t properly informed, that’s after I took it upon myself to ask extensive questions beyond what was on the pamphlet they handed me. I still didn’t get full answers. If you’ve ever been put on a medication by a doctor who didn’t even list the most common side effects, you know how that feels. Except instead of getting a headache and not being able to orgasm, you can get permanent brain damage. So.

I don’t fully agree with many of the people online who say that patients are pressured into being lab rats, but I do think that the hospital’s mission to make progress in the psychiatric field is sometimes placed above their duty to provide a responsible level of care to their patients. So basically the lab rat thing, but a little more forgiving. And again, my experience is just from one hospital. There are far worse places to be than McLean, and I’d imagine many of them offer ECT as well.

the procedure: one of the main issues with ECT is memory loss, so my memory of the actual procedure is a little fuzzy, but here’s what I do remember: you’re either wheelchaired to the ECT waiting room, or you walk there, depending on whether you’re inpatient or not. The first time I went there, and I think once or twice afterwards, they had me sit at a little computer station and fill out a basic survey on my symptoms (rate how true each statement is from 1-4, “I feel hopeless about the future,” etc.). Once it’s your turn, they take you to a small room where you lie down on a stretcher. They might take your vitals, and they have you take off your jacket or roll up your sleeves so they can put little electrode stickers on you. I don’t think they have you change into a gown unless you’re wearing clothes they can’t get out of the way, like skinny jeans or something. They roll you into another room, and they put an IV in your arm and put you out with anesthesia.

You wake up shortly afterwards, in a long room with full of other people waking up in their stretchers, with medical gel in your hair. That’s one of my most vivid memories; always needing to shower afterwards to get the gel out of your hair. Someone comes over and gives you some water or juice, or crackers, makes sure you’re feeling okay, and after a little while they clear you to go back to the waiting room. If you’re inpatient, you’ll be wheeled back up to your ward, and if you’re outpatient, they have you sit in the waiting room for a little while longer before they let you walk back out. I always felt fine - well rested, even - after waking up, but some people get more nausea and whatnot. It’s unusual to have severe symptoms. I couldn’t give you a time estimate, but it’s a surprisingly short procedure, and most of your time is spent in the waiting room or the recovery area.

Afterwards, you’ll be very tired and sometimes spacey for the rest of the day. Once I was outpatient, and getting driven to and from my appointments, I would often fall asleep in the car on the way back. Sometimes I wouldn’t remember things that had happened that same morning.

At first, it seemed to work. On my non-ECT days in inpatient, I found I had more energy, and felt less depressed. After a few weeks, though, it petered out and I stopped feeling positive effects from it. I forget who was monitoring my process, but it was mutually decided that there was no point in finishing the full course.

That was about a year and a half ago. Since then, I’ve noticed that I’m more forgetful than before. I’m trying to work out my brain these days (which I probably should have done right away) to try to restore my memory, and many people who do experience short term memory damage say it fades after a few months to a year. Even if it sticks around (like mine seems to have done), it’s seldom a level of damage that significantly impairs quality of life. Like I said, though, there are plenty of horror stories online from people who suffered significant, permanent brain damage and have definitely been impaired by memory issues. Just because it’s uncommon doesn’t mean it can’t happen. I assumed that because I was young and in relatively good health, I wouldn’t have as many issues as I ended up having.

In addition to the short term memory impairment, I lost the majority of two years of memories. If you asked me to tell you about the college courses I took during that time, I could only give you a few course titles, a vague impression of what one or two professors were like, and absolutely none of the information I learned. I had a major confrontation with a family member during that time, that I only remembered happening because my dad brought it up recently. I still only have a vague idea of what was said. Even my memories before that time are more blurry and distant than they used to be, and many memories that used to be present in my mind are only familiar once someone else reminds me.

Which brings me to some points to consider before making any decisions (in no particular order):

1. Being put under general anesthesia multiple times a week isn’t good for you. This was a risk that wasn’t even mentioned to me. It’s not like I didn’t know anesthesia isn’t good for you, but as a desperate, suicidal 19 year old, I was understandably not making the most balanced choices. And for all the hospital knew, I could have been a very uneducated person. I don’t blame the hospital for the decisions I made, but it should have been their job to educate me about the risks, make sure I fully understood them, and to the best of their ability, make sure that I was making as rational a decision as a suicidal 19 year old in her third inpatient ward can be expected to make.

I don’t actually know, but I assume the dose they give you for ECT is lower than it might be for surgeries. I would still recommend you do some research on the long term effects of general anesthesia, because they can be quite concerning.

2. You can lose a significant number of memories and sustain damage to your working memory. One of the reasons ECT is often considered an extreme resort is because of how common, how profound, and how permanent the side effects can be. It’s like looking up a new medication that you’re taking on drugs.com and discovering that some of the most severe side effects that you’d expect to be under less common or rare are actually among the most common. Older people or those with pre-existing neurological issues are more prone to damage from ECT, but it truly can happen to anyone. There is no way to predict it beforehand, and there is no way to tell what damage you will sustain based on how you feel during the treatments. I sort of subconsciously assumed that, because I often felt fine and recovered more quickly than those around me in the treatment, that I wasn’t getting the bad side effects at all. Nope. You’ll often feel loopy, sleepy, or spaced out during the course of the treatment, and you’ll lose a lot of your immediate memories during that time, so it’s impossible to tell what kind of effects you’ll end up with in the long term.

Then again, the treatment does wonders for some people. It’s a difficult question - do I try a treatment that may or may not help me at all, which may or may not give me long-term memory damage, but which has the potential to make a massive improvement or cure me altogether? No one can answer that for you.

3. It’s likely you won’t be given an accurate impression of the treatment by the facility providing it. Stories on the internet will give you the worst impression of ECT. The hospital that provides it will give you the best impression of ECT. In my opinion, the “truth” is somewhere in the middle. Still, ASK. Be irritating. Drill whoever you’re talking to. Ask them what the worst case scenario is. Ask them at what point in psychiatric treatment they feel it’s appropriate to introduce that kind of risk. They’ll tell you about the people whose lives were changed by ECT, but ask them about the people whose lives weren’t changed. Ask them about the people like me, whose lives weren’t ruined, but weren’t saved either. Ask how likely it is that you’ll end up with a moderate amount of damage and no benefit. Remember that you can always have ECT in the back of your mind, but once it’s done, you can’t undo it.

Looking at websites like mayoclinic and whatnot does not provide an accurate impression of the risks. It just doesn’t. There’s no one source - except me, of course :))) - that will give you a truly accurate, balanced impression of what ECT is like. I just googled a few sites to see what they had to say, and their descriptions make ECT sound like a walk in the park. It’s not.

It’s not a decision that you need to make quickly. Again, if I had been told I wasn’t allowed to get ECT until I was out of the hospital and judged to be a little more stable, I still probably would have done it. But again, everyone is not me.

4. How will you feel having ECT as a possibility in reserve vs. having tried it and failed? Before ECT, the stakes of my psychiatric and theraputic treatment weren’t quite so high. They were worth a solid try, but there was always this mystical treatment that I could get if my depression got to the point where all that was left was this “extreme resort.” I always thought it was strange and probably for insurance reasons that ECT was only for extreme cases, if it had such potential to turn my entire life around. Why wait year after year, wasting my life trying every class of antidepressant and driving 45 minutes once a week to tell a woman I paid to listen to me that yes, I was still depressed? Clearly I needed help, so why waste all this time making sure nothing else could possibly work first? It gave me a sense of hope, but it also put me in a mindset where I found it difficult to fully commit to the therapy I had at the time.

The aftermath of ECT required coming to terms with some tough truths. It was never a miracle cure. There were perfectly legitimate reasons why it was reserved for extreme cases. With that sense of hope gone, I felt crushed, but in a sense, I’m better off. I feel hopeless very often, and I feel desperate, but at least I’m desperate enough to throw myself into the therapy I have, rather than wonder about the possibilities of what I don’t have.

Of course, there’s no guarantee that ECT would fail for you. It might change your life. A lot of people who are helped by it will go back every 6-12 months for a “tune-up.” But I think it’s a significant enough decision that you need to evaluate how not getting ECT could affect your attitude towards other treatments, as well as being prepared to cope in case you try it and it fails. You need to enter the treatment with the mindset that ECT failing does not mean you’re a lost cause. It’s an extreme resort, but it’s never your last resort. Many things - even the effectiveness of different medications - can change with time. You can even have another go at ECT years down the road, because sometimes it works differently once you’ve had even more time to age and mature.

5. It’s not considered an extreme resort because it’s a risky-but-potentially-miraculous cure. Like I said in the last point, I’d held misconceptions about ECT and the reason it’s not done more often for a very long time. It’s considered an extreme resort because it’s an intense procedure, that most people don’t need, and which doesn’t have the greatest track record. Some people have life-changing experiences with ECT. That’s fantastic. But I’ll bet the reason they don’t advertise the statistics is because an awful lot of people don’t. Medication and talk therapy has a much higher success rate and much less severe or permanent downsides than ECT. I know I’ve said it a million different ways, but it’s an awful lot of risk for something that doesn’t seem to have a particularly high success rate.

6. TMSTMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation) is like a less extreme, and much more recently invented version of ECT. I don’t know the exact details of the treatment, but my roommate at McLean (a woman in her 40s, who had gone up and down during the years but still hadn’t given up) was getting it at the same time I was getting ECT. Instead of shocking your brain and triggering a brain seizure, TMS is a constant electrical pulse. You stay awake the whole time. It also has potential negative side effects, but they’re generally less extreme than those of ECT. If you’re in the US, many insurance companies have already approved coverage of TMS. Many patients who were receiving TMS at McLean were doing so as a less extreme alternative to ECT, with the plan that if TMS was ineffective, they would be open to moving up to ECT. If TMS can help you, it’s much better to avoid undertaking the risks of ECT altogether. I was desperate at the time and didn’t see the point of going for the milder treatment, but in hindsight I think it’s a much wiser idea.

I’ve actually thought about TMS for myself. I don’t know what the likelihood of it working for me now, a year and a half after ECT not working, and I’m concerned that it would make my mild tinnitus worse, but it might be a possibility. Again, it’s a more extreme treatment than most psychiatric medications and talk therapy, but it’s not on the level of being put under general anesthesia and having a brain seizure two or three times a week.

sometimes the wild thing with depression is looking back and trying to figure out when it started and never really being able to draw a line for anything like "this was the earliest age it All Began(tm)," probably because there's not generally such an On-Off Switch type process to it. i know usually circa ten yrs old or later in the teens is usually what people point to but sometimes more of a period of exacerbation rather than origin, and who can say it's not also having the emotional and psychological capabilities and capacities that young children don't that bring a greater sense of perspective and awareness, idk anyways so i'm not sure if i was ever not-depressed or anything....i know i was always uncomfortable outside what was familiar and "shy" and i know that as soon as i was around other kids in a way more socially organized than running around together, namely preschool at 4 yrs old, i was aware of not feeling like i fit in and noticing i couldnt make friends like other people could. ive been good at bs-ing school from the start and happen to pick up things very quickly so even though i probably had the same habits as kids with the worst grades and had no particular ambitions re: academia (beyond avoiding parental wrath and later maintaining the identity that kinda protected me a bit in school) since i got really good grades and was quiet and pretty much just read in a corner when left to myself from kindergarten through middle school, i was probably considered a usually ideal student. i remember a couple of people who i felt i was genuinely friends with, a kid named michael who i think went to a different school after a couple of grades, and a kid named jacqueline in 2nd grade who was like me so quiet in retrospect i'm not sure if she knew much english but we played legos together and stuff but then we got in trouble for not paying attention during not even a lesson but i had to move seats b/c arbitrary Making An Example and since we were both so quiet we just didnt interact much anymore to avoid further attention. i made other friends technically but generally it took a long time to be comfortable with them and we were never close and in the meantime i dont think i ever much liked school. i remember one random sunday evening just getting upset about not wanting to go back the next day just because it was boring and meantime at home of course it sucked but i didnt quite realize it til i was older and it helped of course being young enough to be able to go outside for hours and be perfectly entertained playing in the dirt and trees and stuff. i read a lot at home too i remember having pretty skeptical thoughts about Life from earlyish on but, besides spending a crap ton of time just in my own head (reading, playing in dirt) i think i had ideas that life and the world was pretty amazing. like earlier on of course it was like "is magic real??" but then later its just stuff like reading in books about how kids had good friends and families and got to pursue their interests and do things and work out drama and have nice endings with a lot of hope for the future. for all i could tell the only thing keeping that from being my life was that i wasnt old enough, or probably i hoped that it was just a matter of time. it was less like i was extrapolating from my own limited observations of the worse aspects of life that life must be great and more like i was already noticing that my world was lacking and just hoping that it would grow out of it; not to mention being given the hint that stuff like abuse was my own fault and shortcomings i started getting more aware of being fed up with things / that they weren't inherently going to change around like late elementary school / middle school but it would take another year or two to really get the extent of it, and in the meantime by 14 or 15 at the latest i was consciously suicidal so like, moving fast there. i probably by that point had already caught on to the fact that my world had just been kind of shitty and that it wasnt going to change or seem better after a certain amount of time like i'd thought it would. and then add also having a better understanding of the rest of the world just by being older and getting more experience and realizing that its a lot more chaotic than initially taught to you and that being depressed and having developed few interests and zero ambitions and having antagonistic parents and very few friends doesnt do much to give you as much a cushion from that chaos as it could tangent: honestly i like programs that teach instructors how to recognize things that look like Behavior Issues as maybe more being signs of external issues. i wasnt the best at paying attention and i was often quiet in school whether in class or not and it mightve been a problem if i didnt get good grades but since i did i could just be in the background. i don't particularly resent this or anything because i know how teaching is and i myself didnt really understand i had serious problems at home until much later, but in retrospect i think i always had signs. i remember one particular incident when i was about 8 really shouldve been a bit of a warning sign. i know nobody can really do anything even if they know things are bad but considering i had to learn what abuse looked like by myself and i didnt feel supported by any adult and even when i knew what was going on when i was much older i still just didnt tell anyone in any position of authority because i had learned i had to protect myself by keeping personal things totally confidential and that if i exhibited any signs of struggling i would be blamed and chastised for it. wouldve been nice to at least be informed what was going on at an earlier time and maybe given some sense of confidence or at least a sense it wasn't completely my fault. turns out what gave me any ounce of confidence at all was being like 19 and being so blamed and maligned that it backfired and i started feeling like if i was as awful as i was made out to be then surely i didnt need to feel ashamed and responsible for everything that was being done to me. if i already deserved to be dead then what more could i bring on myself by daring to be so terrible as to feel i shouldnt be treated like i was! checkmate atheists anyhow, i feel like my Good Concepts About The World kind of evolved from "later on everyone has adventures" to "later on everyone goes to middle school / high school and makes friends and bonds with their family and follows their dreams" to something just more vaguely escapist with abstracted ideas about simply feeling comfortable and nice, with maybe general imagery, usually like summer sunsets or just some nice stars or something. i thought about it once and it made a lot of sense, thinking about stuff in terms of the concept of feeling ok and good things existing in the world and being able to sense it despite it also being at a distance or otherwise removed like dont get me wrong just because i wanna be dead i dont have some kind of notion that everyone else's experience of life is the same as mine i.e. that life and/or the world is inherently shit, i know its no more objectively bad than it is objectively good. i still like to think about the good side of all of it. i think its a total mistake to have the idea that if someone is suicidal or even just depressed that it necessarily has anything to do with what they think of the philosophy of the concept of Life, its more personal and immediate than that. honestly i hate all the advice about how you need to write a poem for your suicidal friend to teach them the magic of life or do some otherwise melodramatic bad y.a. novel shit that'll give them a New Perspective on the wonders of life literally overnight. not only is it always disgustingly patronizing and often counterproductively Tough Love-esque but also totally like unrelated to the root of the problem of "what if i'm worried about a friend making a suicide attempt." if you're personally wanting to do something i s2g literally just provide a distraction. talk about random shit or play online scrabble or go over and make midnight snacks, not like set a flower on fire while dropping a porcelain teapot on the floor and lecturing them about how this Doesnt Solve Any Problems or is a permanent solution to a temporary problem like no. just be a distraction jfc and dont insult anyone by generalizing their experience and guessing at what's probably an extremely complex and personal matter and turning it into empty clichés anyways: this was the longest way to get to the idea that isnt it wild when, like how you can Hear a sound in your head and despite recreating it decently its different from actually hearing it externally, you can sometimes remember what it was like to feel nice about the concept of life? i cant really summon earlier things but sometimes i can remember flashes of having those later sad-person-in-their-own-head moments of thinking of distant abstract concepts like seeing the sky as a medium for connection to the infinite experiences of humanity, and i can get like the equivalent of a visual image of a recreated feeling from back when i still had a few lingering overly-optimistic notions that things would be good soon. don't get me wrong, again im still aware of the good things in life and i still have good experiences and still feel good feelings. but i dont harbor expectations that the course of life must and will average itself out or lean towards improvement for any reason, like knowing that good things happening to you out of the blue is the same as how terrible things can happen for exactly the same reason—namely no reason at all. so i just dont have the same feelings i used to about my own personal life, and i dont feel the things i used to when i hoped it still could be Only A Matter Of Time. so its wild when for some reason i mentally stumble on the memory of having those feelings and theyre still recent enough that i get a moment of recreating the feeling like i do when i can picture something in my head, and its totally different and dissonant than what's currently true for me. it wasn't a more accurate perspective to think that life being bad meant it had to improve, but its obviously a nicer feeling. and it sounds like overused to the point of meaningless comparison but its like getting your head above water for a second in terms of the momentary contrast of sensation tldr its wild when you depressioning 24/7 and dead inside and have an instant of remembering What It Was Like To Feel Things

Joe Grillo: The Dangers of Urgent Care to the Elderly and Senior Population

In this episode, Steve and Joe discuss:

1. At what point in your life did you start purchasing urgent care centers?

When I finished fellowship, I began to practice and realize that infectious disease doctors are at the low end of the pay scale for physicians, and that, combined with student loan debt, made me interested in seeing how I might be able to mitigate the set of circumstances and it happened that urgent cares were up and coming at the time, and there was not one in my hometown.

2. Did you see senior and elderly patients?

Yes, quite a few.

3. Is it accurate to say that the research showing that the senior and elderly population like to go to their primary care doctor first is correct?

Absolutely. That’s where the trust lies. That’s where people feel most comfortable is with the physician that they have a relationship with.

4. Did you start seeing some of those seniors and elders either coming over from their primary care doctor or just circumventing the primary care doctor and coming right to urgent care?

Well, both actually, probably the most common was their primary care sending the patient over to me over to be seen in the urgent care because the primary wanted the patient to be seen and they weren’t available, or they wanted some ancillary service that we provided, such as an X-ray, a chest X-ray, for example. And their office didn’t have that. We could do the X-ray and read it for him.

5. What was the most common issue that seniors and elders were coming in with?

Upper respiratory, bronchitis or pneumonia even, and urinary tract infection.

6. Do you have to send a lot of them over to the ER, or what would you do when they came in?

If it was simple and could be treated in urgent care with a dose of IV antibiotics and follow that with discharge them with a prescription for oral antibiotics, that would work fine most of the time. However, if it was more advanced, and the patient was becoming bacteremic, or even septic, you know, their life depends on early intervention, you know, immediate intervention with IV antibiotics so the first task would be to get a dose of IV antibiotics on board and then to ship them to the hospital where their treatment needed for an IV treatment needed to be continued.

7. What is it about the urgent care centers, which I don’t know if it’s often but you’re seeing that maybe they haven’t gotten the best care coming in and these UTIs or upper respiratory infections were not dealt with properly?

I’ve seen that. Yes.

8. Can you tell our injured senior community a little bit about the problem that you’re finding with urgent care centers?

Many people recognize that urgent care centers can be profit centers, they can be very profitable. It doesn’t require the investor physician to be doing everything to generate income. In other words, he owns urgent cares and they produce income for him. The issue comes about when the physician that owns tries to run too many centers and what he does is he hires what’s known as physician extenders. Physician extenders are people such as physician’s assistants and nurse practitioners. Now, the law is that as long as the physician is present someplace within the state and available by phone, that the PA or the NP can act autonomously, and when they have an issue or question, they can phone the physician. Most states have statutes that define the scope of practice for physician extenders.

9. In your situation in Rhode Island, the physician extenders could operate as long as the doctor was within the state and was available by phone?

Correct, and what that often meant was that one set of urgent care centers was owned by one group that owned eight or nine urgent cares had one doctor and maybe 15 or 16, extenders acting at any given time.

10. As a result of that, what did you see occurring?

As a result, the extender was acting almost completely on its own. If the case came in, that was serious, the extender who was on his own would first have to recognize that he had a serious case, and then after recognizing it would have to phone the physician to get help. That is very unlikely to happen in clinical practice, in reality.

11. How do you know that this is going on in other urgent care centers?

I know of the centers, I know of the people involved, and I know of the practices involved. I know what I did to keep things safe.

12. Do you have any evidence that this is a national issue? We know that urgent care centers are growing and we know that there are chains of urgent care centers. Are you saying that that is happening across the country?

I can tell you that in recent years, there’s a good amount of case law that’s come out, which highlights this issue.

13. Do you contend that they’re putting the patient’s safety in jeopardy?

Yeah, the equation is simple. If I hire a physician assistant, it costs me less money than to hire an M.D. or D.O.

14. Can you give our listeners an example or two of some really bad things that happened to seniors or elders as a result of going to an urgent care center where they didn’t see a doctor or they saw a patient extender or doctor extender who made a mistake?

A case that comes to mind that’s relatively recent is a case out of Florida a 75 year old male had uncomplicated UTI, went to an urgent care canter and it was missed and not treated by I think nurse practitioner who somehow missed the diagnosis. The patient got worse, went back to the urgent care, and this time they recognized it and what they did and they sent him home on an oral antibiotic that he had resistance to. Now, the problem here is that and the reason it was resistant is that he had previously had a UTI a year prior that was treated and found resistant to this particular drug. Now, the patient extender didn’t look back into the records that she had available to her. She didn’t realize that the patient was organism resistant and the patient ended up dying.

15. Do you believe that in general, urgent care centers are understaffed, on top of the fact that a nurse practitioner or a physician’s assistant is not a doctor? They also might be seeing more patients than they should be seeing?

Certainly. Steve. I want to be clear, nurse practitioners, PAs, and MDs, we all have our place. We all have legitimacy in the health care system. I’m not putting down extenders, what I’m saying is that they’re being misused.

16. Is it realistic to expect them to tell you that there is or there isn’t a doctor on staff or presently in the facility?

Well, I think most often people are going, to tell the truth, I would.

17. Does it also make sense to check the Better Business Bureau or go online and see if there have been any problems with that particular franchise or chain or urgent care center?

Oh, absolutely. It’s very easy to find the reputation of a given place online.

18. Do you have any other tips or advice to our injured senior population listening to this podcast as far as urgent care centers are concerned?

I think it’s important that any physician that you see is board certified. I think it’s important and I think it’s important that if you are going to go to urgent care, it’s very reasonable to ask if the people that are going to see you are board-certified in either family medicine, internal medicine, or emergency medicine, that’s an additional safeguard.

19. Can you just briefly tell our listeners, how you become board certified or, what exactly board certified means?

A doctor doesn’t have to be board-certified to practice in any state. On the other hand, after a doctor completes training, for example, internal medicine training, which is a year of internship and two years of residency, after that, they sit for an exam. If they pass that exam that’s when they’re given what we call board certification. The significance of that is that Dr has mastered his craft instead of not taking, preparing for, and being diligent in studies and in going through residency and internship. They’re technically knowledgeable about the particular fields.

20. So the board-certified physicians are the cream of the crop?

In my view, and most people in my shoes, our view is that being board-certified is kind of a bare-bones requirement.

21. Is there a high percentage of physicians that are board-certified?

I would say over 50% are board-certified.

Hi I don’t know what to do I’m overwhelmed Im jealous and I just feel so unsightly. I have this online friend. She means more to me than the entire world. Recently Ive noticed she has other friends as well Ik it’s not my place but I’m so envious of them. I feel insignificant compared to them is my friendship even enough?recently I’ve been thinking abt just disappearing away from her life and I’m even more disgusted that I could think that. I love her but Idk what to do. I dont want to ruin thing

it’s a really good thing that you’re reaching out for support and talking about this! but..your friend hasn’t done anything wrong, at all. she’s allowed to have more than 1 friend! not only is she ‘allowed’, I strong encourage her to do that, it’s healthy and positive to have lots of friends :) especially when it comes to online friends, it’s even more important for her to branch out and connect with lots of different people.

this jealousy is going to ruin the friendship if you don’t fight it and learn to manage it. right now? you have this one friend, you feel very protective of her because of how much she means to you, you feel pretty threatened when she spends time with others because that means there’s a risk her liking these other people more than you. when you place such a hugeee importance on one person it becomes really risky, because if that one person leaves then suddenly you’re left with nothing. but if you’ve got more friends, both online and irl, who you care about and who care about you? then it’s less risky, because if they (hypothetically) do leave then you’re not going to be left all alone. it would still hurt and be painful, for sure! but it means that you don’t hold on and fixate on one particular friendship, and helps to manage jealousy. also just in general, it’s much healthier and better for you to have multiple friendship networks. so! how to learn to deal with, and overcome jealousy?

you could try branching out a bit and making some new friends of your own :) if you know that you have more than one friend that you value and care for, if you know that you have more than one friend who cares about you? it means you’ll feel less stress and anxiety and fear over a friend spending time with others.

apps like hey!vina or cliq (more links here) can be good for meeting new friends! you could look at joining facebook groups that you have an interest in, focusing the interest group to your town /city can help? like “london feminists group” if you like feminism and social issues or “plants swap melbourne” if you’re into plants and gardening, “dungeons and dragons players new york” if you’re a D&D player? whatever floats your boat! making sure the facebook group focuses on your town / city is important though, because that way a) you’re meeting people with similar interests, and b) there’s a chance to actually meet them and hang out in real life when lockdowns end because they’re close by you :) or you could drop by your local community centre when things re-open and see what events they’re running? there’s lots of ways to meet new people and to make some new friends, both online and irl.

learn how to trust others, and to encourage them to trust you as well. trust is at the root of any healthy friendship! the more trust there is, the less jealousy, the more happiness. this post and this post could be helpful for learning how to build trust? even though those two posts focus more on how you can encourage someone to trust you, rather than how you can trust another person? I think a lot of the time we get back what we give to the world. if you can encourage yourself to be open and honest with others, if you show kindness and compassion to friends and make sure to check that they’re doing ok too? then it’s more likely that you’ll get that back in return, and you start to build a deeper connection with friends and it’s easier to trust them.

work on your own self esteem, remind yourself every. single. day. that you are a good person! that you deserve to have friends, that someone having other friends isn’t about you, it’s not a reflection on you. remind yourself that you have value and worth, you’re not unsightly and that people do still love you and care about you.

don’t walk away from the friendship, don’t disappear. if this friend means a lot to you, then show her that! but also give her space at times too, avoid being too demanding of her time + attention, gently remind yourself that if she shows that she cares about you then she does want to be friends :) her having other friends isn’t a bad thing, it’s not saying she doesn’t want to be friends with you. work on your jealousy, take it one day at a time. good luck <33

i guess the reason i barely do anything these days is bc im afraid of doing it wrong???

i mean of course its not just that, there’s a whole thought process going on behind everything i happen to do or not do

but if i do smth as simple as sweeping it starts the negative thoughts that i’m not doing it right and why am i doing it at all i’m just making a bigger mess i shouldn’t touch anything ever but if i don’t do it i’m a lazy piece of shit who can’t do even the simplest things and i’m just a burden and i can’t even help her with this much and i should just die

but if i were to die that’d be an even bigger inconvenience and it’d just be selfish

and it’s just incredibly messed up. like gdi my thoughts get so fucking negative when i’m not focusing on anything in particular like before i go to sleep usually

and i should’ve probably gone to therapy a long time ago but therapy means money but as it stands we kind of don’t have the money for such things and so i should make some money before i go to therapy

however my mom said that as i am now i would not be able to work. which is kind of. i mean she’s not wrong technically? like i don’t want to work in a typical work environment mostly bc that would mean a lot less time spent with her and a lot more time of being an inconvenience to other people

and it would also mean that there would be no one to bring her food is she needs some during the day. and there would be no one to run errands during the day. bc honestly the fact that i’ve had a lot of free time recently has kinda been helpful in some ways.

and also it’s very weird to be here at 22 trying to look for a job when since abt 8th grade ive been told by my grandma that she can’t imagine me in a work environment. and also by my mom that she can’t imagine me in a traditional work environment. which she justified by saying that ‘i could do so much more than that’ except that somewhere along the way it started sounding less like that and more like ‘you’re weird and closed off and different and so how would you ever fit among other people’

bc yea. that’s kind of how she’s always thought of me. well no she didn’t think i was weird per se. but she always thought i was ‘different’ or ‘special’. she has asked me quite a few times through my life why i’m ‘like this’ (still dont know what she meant by that) and for years and years she has unsuccessfully been trying to get me to change

idk in what way she wants me to change bc at this point i have no idea who i even am. so much of my personality/entire being feels influenced by my grandparents and family in general and her issues and all the people ive known through her and all the people that have hurt me and all the things ive been through

that i honestly don’t know what part of all that can be called ‘me’

and it kinda really fucking stings when i try to tell her that even though she’s always had my best interests in mind, that doesn’t mean she was always a perfect parent and that a lot of the things she’s done through the years have hurt me

she asks for examples and when i give them she just goes ‘i never did that’ or ‘i didn’t mean it that way’ as if i could never ever misunderstand anything she says considering tHAT SHE MISUNDERSTANDS WHAT I SAY ALL THE FREAKING TIME

and it’s kinda messed up that ive felt more alone since she moved here than i’ve felt the two years i spent living with strangers

and i feel like i can’t fucking talk to her? like as soon as i tell her a new idea i had or i tell her about a new thing i started and she starts commenting on them that i somehow lose whatever confidence i might’ve had in any of it and i lose any interest in it or if i don’t then i try to do it the way she would because?? obviously that’s the best way

and it’s so fucking weird bc she often says that she loves me the way i am and that i’m fine the way i am and that i’m not a bad roommate and stuff like that

and then the next day she says i should change and that she can’t bear this anymore and that she doesn’t know where it’ll lead if i continue this way

and if i get mad or sad she gets mad bc she’s ‘only saying the truth’

and then she says that she wishes she could see me ‘try’

idfk what that means to her. bc to me the fact that i get out of bed every morning without wishing i was dead is already trying. the fact that i can get through a day doing everything i’ve been tasked with and everything i put my mind to and also have time for leisure without wishing i was dead is already trying

the fact that i can go a day without being an inconvenience to a stranger i might come across is already trying. the fact that i’ve started dancing and exercising without hating myself for it is already trying. the fact that at one point i even considered waking up every single morning to go on a walk to start the day well is already trying

the fact that i haven’t unintentionally hurt anyone i care about in the last few weeks is a lot of fucking trying. the fact that i’ve applied to seven fucking online projects that i actually want to spend time on if i get accepted to them is already fucking trying

and a lot more that to me seem like monumental things bc a year ago i might not have done any of them

but apparently none of that matters bc im not ‘trying’ in the way she wants me to. and because it takes a lot of consideration for me to even think about making a phone call about something. bc ‘its just a fucking phone call how hard can it possibly be’ and apparently if i can’t do that then i can’t fucking do anything at all ever

and i don’t mean to be ungrateful and i hate hate hate being negative but god theres so much and its been building up and up and up and i can’t fucking talk about it to anyone and i dont know what to dooooooo

7 Things I’ve Learned So Far, by Ruth Emmie Lang

“7 Things I’ve Learned So Far” (this installment written by Ruth Emmie Lang, author of BEASTS OF EXTRAORDINARY CIRCUMSTANCE) is a recurring column where writers at any stage of their career can talk about writing advice and instruction, as well as how they got their literary agent—by sharing seven things they’ve learned along their writing journey that they wish they knew at the beginning.

1. Don’t Write to Sell

A few years before I wrote Beasts of Extraordinary Circumstance, I went through this phase of writing screenplays I thought I could sell. What resulted were several unfinished, unsalable, very unfunny scripts that now live in a folder on my computer titled What Was I Thinking? These stories are terrible for many reasons, but the fatal flaw they all had in common was that I wrote them for someone else. I didn’t care about the characters or their stories. I was just writing what I thought other people would like, and I failed miserably. Once I put these hackneyed projects to bed, I started writing a story just for the fun of it. I had no agenda, no audience in mind other than myself. That story would eventually become my debut novel.

2. Let Other People Read Your Work

Sometimes we get so close to what we’re writing, that we can’t see its flaws. We think that writing a chapter entirely in hashtags is the cleverest thing ever until our friend tells us it gave her a headache. After a day of nursing our wounded egos, we realize that our friend was probably right, and we start over. My husband has always been my first line of defense in the editing process. He’s rescued me from countless bad ideas and has made the good ones even stronger. We don’t always agree, but I trust his opinion, and my writing is stronger for it. It can be scary, sharing your work with other people. As writers, we like to hunker down in the echo chambers of our own imaginations. We are protective of our stories. We don’t want them (or us) to get hurt. Take it from someone whose feelings have been hurt a lot: constructive feedback builds character, both for the writer and her work.

3. Rejection Isn’t That Bad (Once You Get Used to It)

The first time you are rejected by an agent, an editor, or a literary magazine, it can feel like a harbinger of complete and utter failure, like there is some omniscient literary deity who has determined that your career is dead on arrival. I’m happy to report that this is not necessarily the case. Sure, it stung at first, but over time, the rejection letters began to feel like ordinary junk mail. I’d throw them in a pile with credit card offers and pizza coupons, and move on. After my first full manuscript request from an agent, I realized that rejection wasn’t necessarily indicative of the quality of my work. I began to think of my book as a puzzle piece. There was one exact spot where it belonged, but I wouldn’t find it right away. I’d have to try it out in a few different places first—even try to force it somewhere it didn’t belong– until finally finding the right fit.

4. Specificity is Your Friend

One of my creative writing professors in college used to drill this idea into my brain. Ever since, be specific has become a mantra of sorts for me. When I’m writing a scene, I try to avoid generalities. Instead, I home in on a small detail, something seemingly inconsequential, and give it more significance. For example, I recently wrote a short story in which a girl finds out her mom is being released from prison. When she discovers the news, she is peeling an orange, and the acid from the juice stings the skin under her thumbnail. It’s a small action, but I think it adds to the tension in the scene. That being said, I think it’s easy for us as writers to overindulge in the details. I usually opt for a less is more approach. One or two tightly-worded sentences can often do the work of five or six circuitous ones.

5. Don’t Take Yourself Too Seriously

One of my fears before publishing Beasts was that I wouldn’t be taken seriously as a writer. I was worried that because my book is whimsical and silly in places (see: a pig with a horn on its forehead) that I didn’t belong on the same shelves as more serious works of fiction. I thought being a writer meant brooding in coffee shops or hitchhiking across the country with nothing but a notepad and five dollars in your pocket. It wasn’t until I embraced the fact that I had written an unashamedly “feel good” book that I began to relax. After Beasts was released, I started receiving messages from people telling me that they’d had a rough week and my book had made them feel better. I recently went through a very rough patch myself, and books helped me through that time, so to know that something I wrote has had that effect on other poeple means a lot.

6. Be Your Own Casting Director

Sometimes I have trouble finding the voice of a particular character. For whatever reason, they just don’t jump off the page like they should, or they have qualities I don’t like and want to rethink. This is where casting comes in. I close my eyes and imagine my story as a movie. What actor could play the character in question? Better yet, which three actors? Then I “audition” them. I read over what I’ve written so far in the voice of each actor. Not literally –I’m terrible at impressions– but I can hear them in my head, see their expressions. From this point on, the character takes on a whole new life. Dialogue is easier to write, as are idiosyncrasies. The character’s motives become sharper, their emotions more authentic, because I can now put a face to a name. Many times, however, I’ll find that the deeper I get into the story, the less I imagine the actor I chose in the role. As the character himself fleshes out, I don’t need an actor to fill in the gaps. Casting the character was just a tool to help me figure out who the character really is. So, I thank Bob Odenkirk, Jemaine Clement, or Kumail Nanjiani for his service, and promise to call him someday should the film-version ever be greenlit.

7. Practice Empathy

This is a good practice for life in general, but I think it also applies to writing. It’s important for me to be able to empathize with my characters, and that means putting myself in the shoes of people who have different life experiences than I do. I’m not a fan of the adage “write what you know,” at least not in the strictly literal sense. However, I do subscribe to a philosophy I’ll call “write what you feel.” As humans, we’ve all experienced heartbreak, joy, anger, loneliness, disappointment, embarrassment, etc. These feelings are universal, regardless of our background. As long as we stay true to the way an experience feels, it doesn’t matter whether the character we’re writing looks, talks, or even processes emotion the way we do. Even if I’m writing an unlikeable character, I try to find something about them I can relate to, because even though I wouldn’t act the way they would, odds are I’ve felt the way they did at some point in my life. I believe that practicing empathy not only makes us better people, but it makes us better writers, too. It’s a win-win!
