at this point, there was no point in acting like you didn't know the two streamers.

1971 Ford Cortina MkIII GXL (Corgi Vanguards 1:43)

When Ford of Britain first introduced the Cortina - named after the Italian ski resort of Cortina d'Ampezzo - in 1962, it proved to be an almost instant success and quickly became one of the most popular cars on British roads throughout the 1960s and 70s. And despite initially sporting a rather rugged base equipment level, it still managed to top sales charts almost throughout its entire production run, ultimately becoming the fourth best selling British car in the UK's history when production finally ceased in 1982 with at least a good 4 million made over its five updated generations. Its initial reputation as a reliable family car that could also be tickled into a sporty beast thanks to the legendary Lotus Cortina GT models, the subsequent generations only proved to grow in popularity as numerous times the car ended up topping the best selling cars lists, with the Mark III update made between 1970 and 1976 ending up one of its most popular iterations outside of its following Mark IV replacement.

Though Ford initially wanted to call the Mk III as something other than a Cortina, the old name stuck and thus the model's march to success continued unabated. From the outset, the new Cortina was designed to slim down the Ford model line-up by not only extending the trim levels from those available on the Cortina beforehand, but in so doing also eliminating the slow-selling intermediate Corsair, introduced in 1964, entirely. The Mk III shared its platform with the German-built Taunus as the two Ford subsidiaries had recently merged together to form Ford of Europe, though their styling ended up having quite a few divergences despite retaining a basic similarity of conception. The most notable feature was the Cortina's Coke-bottle styling, inspired by contemporaneous American cars, while the Taunus was considerably more slab-sided and simplified in general demeanour. However, regardless of its decidedly blue-collar status, the Cortina managed to be quite a handsome car and was offered as both a two- and four-door sedan, as well as in wagon form.

Trim levels now included the Base, L (luxury), XL (xtra luxury), GT (grand touring), and at the top, the GXL (grand xtra luxury), with engine options spread between four different power levels, beginning from the base 1.3 litre four-cylinder plant and going up to the 2-litre twin choke carburettor "Pinto" engine for the GT and GXL models. It was these last two that were also the most distinctive of the Cortina trim variants, with their employment of quad-headlights, Rostyle wheels, and an aluminium panel between the taillights (the GT's was painted black, while the GXL's went unpainted). In addition, the GXL was also equipped with a vinyl roof as standard and the most tripped out interior you could get, bumping the car's price up to £1338 - £425 more than the base two-door Cortina, far away from the reach of normal workers. The GXL, though, didn't last until September 1973 when it was replaced by the 2000E (as in "executive") as the third generation Cortina received its only facelift, taking with it the round quad-headlights in favour of more Taunus-like single rectangular units and replacing the dash with one that extended toward the driver instead of sloping inwards in a more "transatlantic" fashion.

However, unfortunately for the new Cortina, they also fell victim to a notable drop in quality when compared to both the Mk I and Mk II models, an epidemic that was to plague the majority of British car manufacturers in the 1970s. Poor fit and finish along with susceptibility to severe rusting gave the cars a bad reputation in later life, while manoeuvrability was also reportedly somewhat sluggish and soft in comparison to the earlier Cortinas and rear visibility was noticeably poor. Still, sales between 1970 and 1976 of the Mk III's life remained high, with a total of 1,126,599 cars produced between that time, albeit the aforementioned quality issues also caused many of these popular fleet cars to be driven to the end of their tether and then unceremoniously scrapped. However, interest in the car did see some pick up when a 1975 Cortina 2000E masquerading as a '73 GXL was given a prominent starring role in the TV series "Life On Mars" (2005-06) as DCI Gene Hunt's personal car, giving the old dowager more popular credence as something cooler than just a working man's basic transport.

Vanguards is a subsidiary of Corgi, who specifically focus on producing model cars typically seen on British roads over the years, which series has also included several variants of the Mk III Cortina as well. With so many colour variants and trim variants based on the Mk III produced, it's hard to really figure out which of these came out first, though the model catalogue number would suggest this Maize-Yellow GXL from 2007 would be amongst the earliest. The model comes with a certificate card with a brief history of the car, some technical stats, and a note that this is a limited edition of 3,470 units (mine is numbered as being no.2553). The model itself is of good general quality, with good proportions and basically well defined level of detail. The body moulding does seem a slight bit on the soft side in places to leave door and bonnet/boot lines a bit less sharp than would be ideal, giving the car an overall feeling of slight mushiness of detail. This also extends to the aluminium panel between the taillights that lacks much detail of the real car, though the variant of this model painted Sapphire Blue seems to fare better in this regard, perhaps due to being a later version put into production (the black line here is an addition of mine to hark toward the Life On Mars car). However, this does not diminish the otherwise quite good level of body definition, particularly in the front of the car, and the addition of the Rostyle wheels make it look quite attractive (a marked improvement over some of the more all-chrome wheels that have tended to be rather inaccurately and poorly detailed).

Paint is of average quality and the vinyl roof is made of a more matt surface to give it a different texture. The interior is an all-black affair, but seems reasonably well detailed, though criticism has been levelled on later models of the 1973 facelift that has retained this older dash instead of applying the newer dash that the Cortina was to have until the end of its production - this despite Vanguards having already offered a Mark IV from which they could have adapted the newer dash design from for the later Mk III variants. Delicate windshield wipers as separate pieces are a nice detail as are the wing-mounted side view mirrors, though the bottom could use some colour over its flat black application, as nice as the general detailing otherwise is. The GXL badges on the C-pillars are somewhat overly tiny and weirdly centred, and the decals have a slight tendency to blend into the body in certain light conditions, but otherwise look accurate enough. The windowsills and other chrome strips are simply painted silver and the licence plates are on the blocky side. The headlights have a nice level of transparency, though. Overall, this is a nifty little model that suffers somewhat from the lack of sharper moulding definition, but is otherwise a scale model well worth having. However, I wouldn't go paying exorbitant sums of money for one, the original circa €30 I paid for this really pushing it (which is peanuts seeing what it goes for on eBay now). But if you find one at reasonable prices, then it's certainly a good model to pick up.
