[Song to the Siren / Sixteen Days]] [This Mortal Coil] [1983] [12inch Single] On the A side of this 12 inch single is the medley "Sixteen Days/Gathering Dust". The songs of this medley were originally written by the New Wave Band "Modern English" "Sixteen Days/Gathering Dust is interpreted here by members of "Cocteau Twins", "Colourbox" and "Modern English" themselves and the singer Gordon Sharp. A very nice 1980s New Wave postpunk song that sounds a bit like a mixture of "The Cure", "Siouxsie and the Banshees" and "Sisters of Mercy". . Now to the actual pearl on the B-side: Already in 1967 Tim Buckley and Larry Beckett wrote the extraordinary great song " Song to the Siren". A song of such power and depth and that only with voice and guitar, a song that could run in an endless loop forever and ever. . 16 years later the incredible happened. The project "This Mortal Coil" created the most breathtaking and magical version of "Song to the Siren". Here’s a 1995 Lisa Gerrard tour book - honestly not sure how I acquired this, since I only saw her solo once, in 1994 at the “All Virgos Are Mad” 4AD mini festival I posted about earlier. (Apologies for the sideways ones; instagram makes things difficult to post mixed orientations).

In 1994, 4AD did a week-long festival called “All Virgos Are Mad”. My memory is not great, and I didn’t make it to all of the shows, but I DO recall seeing Lisa Gerrard (From Dead Can Dance) SOLO at a very small venue (McCabes Guitar Shop). I think Mark Kozelek opened for her; I remember we gave him a ride home afterward. (He was very nice!) I’m pretty sure I saw The Wolfgang Press @ The Troubadour, but for some reason I only remember meeting them at the Virgin Megastore. There are photos of this! I just have to find them…

[Spleen and Ideal] [Dead can Dance] [1985] [CD]

After the extraordinary and great debut album from 1984, which was still strongly influenced by post punk and gothic, the further musical path of "Dead can Dance" was already indicated.

.

Only one year later the second album "Spleen and Ideal" followed and indeed the musical orientation is now clearly recognisable. Some call the new direction "Neoclassical Darkwave". I call it simply epic!

.

The opener "De Profundis(Out of the Depths of Sorrow)" alone obliges you to own this album. Just as breathtakingly graceful, beguiling and fascinating it continues with the second track "Ascension". It continues with the divine "Circumradiant Dawn".

.

It is impossible to describe every single track accurately. There are simply no suitable terms.

But maybe one word is enough - beautiful!
