You'd rather not make a big deal of it being your birthday, even though it is you were taught that birthdays aren't a big deal and your family never really did them.

You kind of wish someone would care but you feel guilty about that so you choose not to tell anyone about it

The only one of these who actually knows it's your birthday is Miss Pauling, who’s seen your personnel files

Miss Pauling

She knows it's your birthday, and instead of ignoring it she decides to at least discreetly make it a good day for you

She arrives on base for a routine inspection, clipboard in hand, but once she's done with the main thing, instead of leaving, she comes to your room

"I saw that it's your birthday today. I don't know if you celebrate, or anything, but, uh, I thought you'd like a gift. Maybe."

She hands you a box, inside are some candy bars and a plush of a bear

"I know it's not exactly the nicest thing, and I know it's kinda... stereotypical... but, y'know, I thought you'd like something. So, happy birthday. From me.” She’s really shy about it, you get the feeling she didn’t--probably still doesn’t--really get to celebrate birthdays either. 

She offers you a ride on her motorbike, something nice, on the open road--away from this base for a little while. You accept, taking a seat behind her, enjoying the open air--though it is pretty hot out. You guys talk, just enjoying the time.

She smiles at you as you get back. “Happy birthday. You deserve it.”

You thank her and even give her a hug. It’s nice that you got this for once. 

Scout

He has no idea whatsoever that it’s your birthday. He’s interacting with you like usual, teasing you, just hanging out. You’re happy as you talk that day; he’s always good at making you laugh and smile.

At some point he notices that you’re a little down, as much as you may try to hide it, he can tell. You’re his friend, and even though he might act like he doesn’t care sometimes, you know he does. A lot.

You tell yourself you don’t want anything on your birthday, that it’s easier if no one knows, but secretly, you do.

“Hey, what’s up? C’mon, ya know I can tell when something’s wrong.” 

You tell him it’s nothing. 

“You sure? Really? You’re kinda… I dunno, sadder than usual.” After he asks a few times, you finally come out and tell him. You don’t say much. Just “It’s my birthday.”

“No kiddin’? Well, why didn’t ya tell me?” He comes off pretty strong. You feel kind of apologetic for mentioning it, and look away from him. “Aw, hey. Y’know what--it don’t matter. I’m gonna throw you a party like you ain’t never seen, believe me.”

You try to tell him you don’t want a party--well, you do. Maybe. No you don’t. Well, sure. But not a big one. He’s really sweet and enthusiastic about it. “Someone like you deserves a big birthday--but if you don’t want it, dat’s okay. Ya know, we could just hang out, or somethin’. You n’ me, yeah?” 

You tell him you’d like that a lot. You both find a quiet spot in the base where you can just talk. He messes around, too, and pops in a Tom Jones record. 

He’s a little shy, a little embarrassed, but he even sings happy birthday to you. He just seems glad no one can hear him. He doesn’t have a gift handy for you, but he ends up scribbling you a quick doodle of him telling you happy birthday. It’s misspelt, but the drawing is cute, and you keep it. “I hope ya had a good day. I’m just sorry I didn’t know sooner.” You tell him that it wasn’t his fault, how could he have known? 

After all is done, he gives you an awkward hug. You smile and return it.

Soldier

He’s a little crazy so he’s just hanging around base, today he had the idea to strip and cover himself in honey, so everyone has had to convince him to please not do that, and now he’s just moping around, muttering about how anti patriotic this all is.

You sit next to him and mope as well. Unlike him, no one knows the reason you’re moping. To anyone else’s point of view, you’re just comforting him--for whatever weird reason. But he sees that you’re just as sad as him.

“What’s wrong, maggot? Is there someone who needs to see my fists meet their face?”

You tell him no, no one did anything. You’re a little intimidated by him, and you don’t see much reason to tell him anyways. But it’s nice sitting with a friend. 

“If it’s not a person, then… it must be an object! Give it to me and I will destroy it immediately.” He’s being as sweet as he can, you smile and shake your head.

You sit there for a bit, smiling as you watch the other mercs come and go. Today isn’t a bad day, just a little sad. Later, you plan to find some kind of sweet treat to eat alone.

Soldier stands up, at attention, and points at you. “MAGGOT, AS YOUR SUPERIOR AND SENIOR, I ORDER YOU TO TELL ME WHAT IS WRONG!”

With a sad smile and a chuckle you finally tell him.

“Your birthday?” Soldier seems genuinely surprised. He places a hand on his chin and thinks. “We cannot go without celebrating! This is momentous!”

Although you try to protest, he turns to the base, stating to every other merc, “LISTEN UP! IT IS Y/N’S BIRTHDAY AND WE WILL CELEBRATE!” 

He makes it his personal mission to decorate for a party that very evening, even gets a cake and everything. He makes every other merc sing happy birthday with him. Maybe this isn’t so bad.

You give him a big hug, and he is surprised at first, but proceeds to give a gentle laugh and hug back.

Pyro

You see Pyro colouring with crayons and coloured pencils on their break, and you sit by them. You don’t really understand what they’re saying a lot of the time, but you enjoy hanging out with them. It’s a long period of silence before you join them in colouring. Regardless of your artistic skills, they’re impressed and encourage you, and are very happy when you show them what you’ve been working on. 

After a little while you get kind of bored and sad. You’ve tried to enjoy this day but it’s another bittersweet birthday. You’re happy to hang out with Pyro though, even though they don’t know what day it is.

Pyro notices that you’ve stopped colouring with them, and that you’re looking at the ground instead, messing with the cracks in the floor.

“Huddah hrmmf mmmrph?” You don’t understand what they’re saying exactly, but you smile at them. They seem to be asking what’s wrong, why you stopped, why you seem so sad.

You hesitate for a moment before finally confessing. They seem to mostly understand what you mean, and they lean back, thinking. 

After a few seconds, they stand up and help pull you off the floor. They point to their room, and you follow them. It’s an odd combination of scorch marks, colourful drawings, weapons, and art supplies. They lead you to a wardrobe and pull out a box. 

Surprisingly, you can see that it's fully wrapped. Did they somehow know it was your birthday? Do they keep these gifts on hand for the mercs?

You won’t get an answer, but they excitedly push it out and offer it to you. “Huddah hmmph!” They sound almost like they are smiling behind the mask. You take the box and open it. It’s got crayons, pencils, and… wow, that’s a drawing of you and them.

You smile, almost ready to tear up, and thank them. You give them a hug, and you notice that they’re hugging you back even harder. Maybe they don’t really understand, but this is sweet.

yo ok so i never told anyone about my Gotham/batman/whatev sort of au/crossover whatever that was just an enormous recreation of gotham but actually in nottingham and also randomly featuring au versions of lazytown characters?

so im just gonna infodump about it under the cut bc its really extended and lots of detail

batman used to be american so like. to disguise his identity his voice goes full fuckin chav as soon as he puts the batsuit on its fucking hilarious

theres an extended family i dont really feel like talking about but theres Sharps/Jack and Michael Leslie. Theyre twins and the only way to really tell them apart besides hair is that jack/sharps has really uneven almost sharp bottom teeth. sharps/jack was fostered and went through a lot of shit and is now a multiple system considering of Jack(dark defender type, will kill without hesitation) and Sharpie (main front about 60% of the time, very soft gay with a lot of self hate and also timid but likes knives and is just really sweet stab baby) with a third fragment that doesnt ever front or have a name but serves as a sort of accountant for the brain.

joker in this universe is their half brother. same shithole dad. unfortunately later in life sharps got fostered so they lived with joker for like a year or so. thats how joker got those scars? jack just wanted them to be happy that their dad was finally dead.

then theres tully? he’s a mercenary and sorta dragged his half elf boyfriend michael leslie into the whole mercenary thing. when miraculous ladybug first came out and pictures of adrien first circulated i sorta took it really personally and got so fucking angry bc just the year before i’d decided that these homo boyfriends had gotten interested in Cats for some fuckall reason and they both had flame resistant catsuits with ears and shit and fucking flamethrower tail like pyro from tf2, and like. adrien fucking happens and its like fucking straightwashed michael leslie in the outfit i’d fucking came up with and i lost my shit so hard that i cant watch ML because the one cat dude being literally michael leslie but rewritten as a straight male was just so revolting to me?? i dont fuckin know. they also literally call themselves miguel and tulio because theyre so fucking gay ok. and they do look kinda like miguel and tulio if u squint.

cobblepot is someone that moved to gotham from PA because everyone kept calling them ben franklin literally every day and the only work they could get was as a historical ben franklin costume person and they couldnt deal with it. they lived in london for a long time as a young kid and then later for four years before moving to gotham. theyre really pissed at Ivy for some reason. i dont remember why. cobblepot is literally penguinkin and has pet penguins and is a little shit and i love them

crane literally invented the slenderman mythos and is a demiboy corseter. at first he was goin the whole scarecrow route but now he’s modified that to full slenderman mythos when he really fell in love with cryptids and just really fuckin made too many online fiction writings about slenderman and probably is one of the SCP foundation ghostwriters or some shit.

penny (i dont remember her actual name i just remember her nickname im sorry) is. batmans genderfluid butler ok. half the time- ALFRED! ok yeah sorry. alfred/penny sorta just sometimes wears pencil skirts and pumps and stockings and a wig and just. pearls. very business genderfluid princus.

You've been dating Scout for a bit now, and he decided it was time for you to meet his Ma.

You get a day away from the base and he takes you to his home to meet her; and some of his older brothers.

Note: We will be calling his brothers that you'll meet Ricky, Aaron, Lionel, Frank, and Daniel. The other two are off on business for plot reasons i guess

When you arrive at the house, Scout is holding your hand. He pulls you eagerly up the porch steps to the door and rings the bell, rocking back and forth on his heels in a cute, nervous sort of movement as he waits for his Ma to answer.

The moment the door opens, and Ma sees you, her face lights up. She recognizes you from Scout's descriptions of you when he called home and from the few photos he's sent her.

"Oh! I've heard so much about you dearie!" Her bright red lips form a grin as she takes your hand in both of hers, happy as can be. "It's so wonderful to finally meet you!"

You're quickly led into the house and told to take a seat at the table. "I can't believe my darling Jeremy finally got a girl of his own!"

Ma has a meal prepared for you, and she's very quick to set it up! She charters her older boys to set the table, but makes sure you don't have to do anything. She nudges Scout and he fumbles, realizing she wants him to help. With a sheepish smile he brings you your plate.

You're a bit overwhelmed by everyone, but they seem very friendly! You count five of the seven older brothers Scout mentioned having, and they all sit down at the long table with you and his Ma.

Though they're all at least 24, some of te younger ones are pretty rowdy, but most of them are pretty well behaved. Mama didn't raise no brats.

"All right, dears, say hello to your brother's gal!"

Each of them say your name overlapping in hellos and his, all of them seeming genuinely happy to meet you.

"Now, darling, I gotta tell you, I am so happy you're here! It's so good my baby Jerry finally has a girl in his life. I know you're just perfect and he better be treatin' you right. He is, right?" She shoots a glance at Scout.

You assure her he's doing great and she smiles, seeming relieved. He's likely had his share of messy relationships; nothing too bad of course, just him being him.

While Ma can certainly be a lot, she's much more open and inviting compared to some of the other parents of past partners you may have had. She's very easy to warm up to and you find yourself talking to her easily.

She starts telling you and embarrassing story about when Scout was younger. His brothers start laughing and she tells them all to shush. The further she goes, the more Scout's face reddens. He groans. "Aw, Ma, c'mon..."

You like hearing those stories, and you giggle when you hear them.

Lionel, Scout's third oldest brother, also starts talking. He's got a job in business, married with two little kids, and he's happy Scout's with you. He really sees that you love each other and he believes you're the best match he's had. He loves you tons.

Frank and Daniel, the twin brothers who are two years older than Scout, are by far the loudest, but they are definitely respectful towards women. When they call you ma'am, Scout's Ma winks at you. She taught 'em how to treat a lady. They ask you tons of questions, especially teasing ones about Scout, and you have fun talking to them.

Aaron, who is the next oldest after the twins, tells you that he's an aeroplane pilot. He tests aeroplanes but doesn't fly them commercially. His eyes are bright and he's more than happy to tell you about what it's like flying. "It's awesome. You go 'bout that far up and your ears pop like you're hiking or something."

Ricky is sandwiched between Aaron and Lionel in age, and he tells you he's a writer. He asks you a lot about whatever interests or profession you may have, eagerly paying attention to every word you say.

After a while, the conversations spread out, everyone talking to everyone.

Scout sits there, far more quiet than usual in this circumstance. He seems to want to talk, but only really to you or his Ma.

She senses this and shoos everyone else away, leaving just you three alone.

"Look, I'm awful sorry if that was too much for you. Everyone got so excited and wanted to see ya, ya know? But they're all done now, 'kay?"

When you're all three alone, Scout seems a lot more excited and willing to talk. He's loud as always but far more nice than he is in public, telling his Ma how much he loves you and she's so happy to see him this happy. So are you.

You're so glad Ma loves you, and you hug her tight when you have to go. She gives you a kiss on the cheek and smiles. While Scout gets in the car, she says, just to you, "take care, hun. You're the one for him, I just know it."

Dadspy Headcanons

He stayed with Ma sometime after Scout was born, only leaving due to his job. He figured that his relationship with her could solve not only as blackmail but also become a threat to her safety

Ma is one of the only people who knows his true identity and face, and he does check in on her and still loves her, over any other maiden he's courted with in such a manner

During Scout's younger years, there may have been a few adults, teachers, and other authority figures who did things they shouldn't, especially regarding children. Spy is the father only of Scout, and Ma's most recent lover; he is the only one she sees and longs for now

Sometime after Spy left as Scout's father, he disguised himself as one or two specific people so he could stay close to his son, interacting with him, serving as whatever bit of role model he could.

Spy always left gifts for Scout on his birthday. For the first couple years they were clearly from that absent father, but after that, they were from one of the other identities he'd taken. After a while he'd realized those too were a threat and pretended they'd moved away.

Spy made requests to the Administrator to get both of them on the same team. He felt somewhat guilty about that, but, after so long apart, he wanted to look after his son for a while.

Spy also has ADHD, except his is far more inactive-type and masked, which is where Scout got it from, whereas Scout is active and completely out there.

Ma is so sweet and girlboss but also where Scout got his smarts. Fortunately, Spy is moronsexual and madly in love.

Thinking about how much of a morning person Kennedy absolutely is not. Thinking about how at 6 am Kennedy is just there sitting like this

And rubbing her eyes with the messiest hair you've ever seen and just. Like not even registering that she exists yet. And she just doesn't even move and just stares into space for a solid half hour unless Scout comes to get her. And he chuckles to himself and snaps her into consciousness and she's a little silly and kind of grouchy when she has to talk to anyone within an hour of gaining consciousness, except he's a fine exception. She smiles at him but just stares at anyone else who tries to talk to her like '-'

Scout coaxes her out of bed with caffeine and drapes a blanket over her bare shoulders since she likes to sleep in a tank top. And she just follows him out of her room into the far too bright base. Just a 5'2 1/2" gremlin with a messy braid, grey tank top and oversized black track pants shuffling through the corridor and into the kitchen. And he'll sit her down and put a hot tea in front of her and she'll just stare at it for a minute before slowly drinking it.

And then she'll be awake. and she'll down a second one in absolutely no time at all. And then she'll be awake and as everyone else joins them at the table she'll brighten up and start talking the hell out of everyone, still in the messiest morning girl outfit ever. By now Scout knows she doesn't really eat much for breakfast except some kind of smoothie, but that if she's given something she'll eat whatever. So when she's sad he'll give her some treat, but he learned how to make the best damn smoothies just for her.
