A door opened at the top of the steps, and light spilled onto the dark landing. "Julian?" Emma called. "Julian, is that you?"

Chain of Iron, page 383:

James was still pushing against him, stiff armed, but his movements were slower now, his chest no longer heaving. "Matthew," he whispered. "Matthew, is that you?"

Jace: Oh, so they're a slightly gayer version of us... Anyway, then they should get married. The important thing is that I want to see them say each other some vows. It would be romantic.

He’s surrounded.

He takes a step back before slicing down another demon. It crumbles to the ground and two more take its place.

He takes a chance to sneak a glance over his shoulder and barely twists away from a shax demon before plunging his sword into its head. Above him, he glimpses an arrow flying.

A weight in his chest settles.

He doesn’t know how long they’ve been out here. He’d lost sight of Alec once the hoard appeared and no matter how many he cuts through, he can’t seem to reach him. His movements are getting stiff from fatigue and caked on ichor. The tip of his seraph blade is dull, but they just keep coming.

Slash!

Two more down.

Three take its place.

There’s a cry in the distance and Jace briefly wonders if it’s his own voice. His bones ache.

Ahead of him, the monsters crowd in a circle. No.

Another cry rings out and he takes off in a full sprint. His vision is a blur of ash and metal. A sharp pain in his chest sends him toppling forward. His blood is on fire, he clutches his left shoulder.

No.

He stumbles to stand and pushes himself forward, throwing himself into the pile. He rips through the demons with his bare hands, his heart twisting into his throat.

Alec.

His shoulder burns.

Alec.

His vision blurs.

Alec.

He can taste blood.

A shadow passes over him and he turns towards it, just for a second.

A falcon?

When he turns back, the demons have vanished. Bile churns in his stomach. Panic takes over, adrenaline powering him to run. He runs, and he runs, and he runs. But there’s nothing. Nothing.

Jace?

Alec.

Jace.

Where are you? I can’t find you. Wait for me ok. Hang on.

“Jace!”

He lurches forward, heaving, while his eyes adjust to the dark.

“Hey.” the voice places a tentative hand on his shoulder causing him to flinch away.

“It’s ok. It’s just me.”

“A-Alec?” he croaks, his voice hoarse.

“Yeah.” Alec answers, reaching back to touch Jace’s arm. This time, Jace doesn’t pull away.

“I didn’t think I was going to wake you up. You were pretty deep in there.”

“Sorry.” Jace mutters, rubbing unconsciously at his shoulder.

Alec shakes his head, “don’t be. You ok?”

Jace takes him in, scanning, searching for injuries or flaws in the illusion. But he’d know those blue eyes with stringy black hair anywhere. He’s here. The nightmare’s over. For now.

“Yeah. I’m fine.” He lies

Alec tilts his head skeptically.

“Really. I’m good. Thanks for getting me out of there.” Jace says, patting Alec on the shoulder.

“Of course. I’ll always have your back.” Alec smiles.

“Even in my dreams?” Jace smirks.

“Always.” Alec promises.

A calm washes over him. The nightmare eradicated by his Parabatai’s steadfast truth.

“Just don’t let Magnus find out, ok? I don’t wanna live the rest of my life as a coat rack.” He jokes.

Alec laughs, a pink tint blooming on his cheeks.

“Go get some sleep,” Jace instructs. “I’m good.”

“If you say so.” Alec shrugs, laying down on his side.

“What are you doing?” Jace asks, looking down at him

“Getting some sleep,” Alec answers, “You should too. Come on,” he smacks the empty side of the pillow next to him.

Jace stares for a moment, “You don’t have to…”

“I know.”

Slowly, Jace lays back down in the bed, his head spinning as the silence stretches between them.

“It’ll be ok.” Alec says quietly.

Jace feels movement by his side as Alec slides his hand out, palm facing the ceiling.

“I got your back.”

Jace takes it, giving it a squeeze, “I know” he says, “thanks brother.”

Part 2 of my “I’m losing my mind about the Lightwood siblings” breakdown while I read City of Heavenly Fire again:

“Jace thought of the wooden soldier he’d given to Max, and closed his eyes in sudden pain.”

“It’s good to have people worry about you,” said Alec. “It means they care. It’s how you know they’re good friends.”

Emma’s gaze went from Alec to Jace, curious. “Do you worry about him?” she asked Alec, surprising a laugh out of him.

“All the time,” he said. “Jace could get himself killed putting his pants on in the morning. Being his parabatai is a full-time job.”

“I like her,” Isabelle said finally. “She kind of reminds me of Jace when he was little, and stubborn, and acted like he was immortal.”

“Go without me, and you disrespect our parabatai oaths, you disrespect me as a Shadowhunter, and you disrespect the fact that this is my battle too.”

“Jace looked shocked. “Alec, I would never disrespect our oaths. You’re one of the best Shadowhunters I know—”

“Which is why we come with you,” said Isabelle. “You need us. You need Alec and me to back you up the way we always have.”

“And how old are you?” Isabelle said.

“Nine,” said Max. “I’ve always been nine.”

Isabelle stared. The kitchen around her was wavering. She could see through it, as if she were staring through printed fabric: everything going transparent, as mutable as water.

“Baby,” she whispered. “My Max, my baby brother, please, please stay.”

“I’ll always be nine,” he said, and touched her face.”

“She knew Jace hated it when Alec was angry at him. She wasn’t sure if he could feel the discord through the parabatai bond or if it was just ordinary empathy, or a little of both.”

“I just wanted to say that you don’t always have to be all right. I asked you to be my parabatai because I needed you, but you’re allowed to need me, too. This”—he indicated his own parabatai rune—“means you are the better, other half of me, and I care about you more than I care about myself. Remember that. I’m sorry I didn’t realize how much you were hurting. I didn’t see it then, but I see it now.”

Alec was very still for a moment, barely breathing. Then, to Jace’s surprise, he reached out and ruffled Jace’s hair, the way an older brother might ruffle his younger sibling’s hair. His smile was cautious, but it was full of real affection. “Thanks for seeing me,” he said, and walked off down the tunnel.”

Jace and Alec’s friendship

It is a truth universally acknowledged that in a parabatai pair, one will be the "FIGHT ME" one and other "Dont u fucking dare" from behind them.

Its also a truth universally acknowledged that the first one WILL be a fucking herondale (about 99%)

You know everyone always talks about how Jace is always seen as better than Alec, but I think it's forgotten that Jace never saw himself as better. He's always seen Alec as his equal, in the ways that Jace thought mattered anyway. It's everyone else who sees Jace as better.

Jace values Alec's pure soul, his goodness, his faith in people more than strength or how good a soldier you are. He values Alec's soul and heart more than his abilities as a Shadowhunter. And he thinks that makes Alec better than he could ever be.

I know we usually headcanon Clace having a baby boy and naming him William or Jonathan, but I AM SO SURE that Clace would name their first son Alexander (for Alec)

Shadowhunters headcanon thing?

Jace & Alec are kinda in love, it's impied things happened years ago between them. But when Magnus enters the picture Jace get's jealous. And starts a weird love triangle thing where he and Alec have tension but never do anything. When the wedding happens as Magnus runs down the asile to snag a kiss and a boyfriend, its Jace who jumps in to stop it from happening.

So then Jace is the one who kisses Alec on the wedding day. Jace is the one Alec confesses feelings for at his wedding. This has the unforeseen effect of making the Lightwood family super chill with Alec being gay, because at least he's gonna be fucking Jace, and like they're okay with that.

Jace: He'll say a lot more words, it doesn't mean anything.

This is one of my favorite excerpts of City of Heavenly Fire:

“The best thing Valentine ever did for me was send me to you,” Jace added. “Your parents, sure, but mainly you. You and Izzy and Max. If it hadn’t been for you, I would have been—like Sebastian. Wanting this.” He gestured at the wasteland in front of them. “Wanting to be king of a wasteland of skulls and corpses.”

This whole scene with Jace and Alec opening up to each other is amazing
