#JackJohnson (1878 – 1946) was the first Black Heavyweight #Boxing Champion regardless of being at the height of the #JimCrow era, with a career of 73 wins. He was known as the “#GalvestonGiant” and was the son of ex-slaves. Jack had contempt for racial rules, lived a flamboyant lifestyle, and dated white women. In 1912, he was convicted of the #MannAct, designed to prevent human trafficking but used in this case to punish interracial relationships. Johnson fled to Europe and did not return until 1920 to serve his sentence. While at Leavenworth Federal Prison, he hand-wrote his autobiography on prison stationery, invented a wrench, and was granted a patent in 1922.

voice acting isnt just about How Many voices you can do (tho that is a really valuable skill), there are plenty of voice actors who are known for doing a single voice, usually just their normal voice, or they get most famous off roles that are just their normal voice

(note: just listing a couple of their so goddamn many roles each for recognitions sake, they got so many more of course, also some of them like H john benjamin might have more vocal range than their normal voice, but you know what i mean)

the difference is these VAs 1. are cast for the roles that are right for that one voice theyre known for 2. do a good job at that one voice 3. most of their voices are memorable and unique

...chris pratt is being cast just for the name recognition, in a role hes not suited to, and doing a shit job, with the most boring ass normal dude voice in the universe. which, yeah sure it worked in the lego movie where he was literally playing Normal Guy McDudeface. it dont work for an iconic character known for having a unique voice.

so like. having no vocal range or just using your normal voice for your biggest roles is fine!! if your normal voice fits. if chris pratt wants to play more Normal McDudeface chars, well he can still go fuck himself for being a homophobic piece of shit and supporting his 3%er bro of course. but he could give a passable performance. sucks ass as mario tho!!!

anyway no "you can still tell its jack black why are you praising his voice huh" isnt a good arguement. yeah you can tell its him but, besides the fact that no he is actually changing his voice to fit the role even if its still recognizable as himself, hes doing a good job at it. thats the difference. his normal but slightly to the left voice works. pratts doesnt.

So you want to know more about Big Barda

As Tumblr's resident expert on all things Barda, and as Kelly Thompson's Birds of Prey run brings far more attention to the character, I figured it was high time someone stepped in and gave the tumblr world a primer on DC's biggest and boldest heroine.

The Basics:

Introduced in Mister Miracle #4 by Jack Kirby, Big Barda was once the leader of Apokolips' premier death squad, the Female Furies. Trained from birth for a life of violence by Granny Goodness, Barda spent the first 250 years of her life as a living weapon. This all changed when she met Scott Free, a gentle Parademon-in-training with a mysterious past and a knack for escapes. Eventually, she and Scott both escaped to Earth, where they fell in love with both the Earth and each other. She's a lover, she's a fighter, she's a Pokémon card expert, but most of all, SHE BIG.

Barda's signature defining attribute is her raw strength. Her raw muscle allows her to keep up with heavy hitters like Wonder Woman. This isn't to suggest that she's a simple-minded brute, however-- Barda has centuries of military experience under her belt as leader of the Female Furies. She's mastered multiple weapons, including spears, swords, and her signature Mega-Rod.

Essential Runs:

Mister Miracle Vol. 1 #4-18 by Jack Kirby (1971-1974)

This was the run that introduced the world to Big Barda, as well as the Female Furies. If you want to know the basics of Barda, there's no better place to start. This run is collected in a trade, as well as a part in The Fourth World Omnibus Vol. 1.

(NOTE: Even though Barda doesn't appear until issue #4, I suggest you start with Issue #1. It'll help you get acquainted with the rest of the mythos.)

Justice League International #14-24 by Keith Giffen and J.M. DeMatteis (1988-1989)

Big Barda was on the JLI! She plays off the other characters as well as ever, and a lot of what's great about her in Jack Kirby's original run is still here! Definitely check this one out if you want to see her in another team setting. This has been collected in this omnibus.

(NOTE: Once again, I recommend you start from issue #1.)

Yeah, I know.

Listen, Tom King is a writer with... idiosyncrasies to put it nicely. The characters in the periphery of his stories tend to act really out of character, and his dialogue can be clunky at times. That being said, The Scott/Barda dynamic in this book is excellent, and this book has some of the best art that the Fourth World has seen since the 80s. The series has been collected in a trade.

Mister Miracle: The Great Escape by Varian Johnson and Daniel Isles (2022)

If you're at all interested in the idea of a Young Adult reimagining of Mister Miracle and Big Barda's origin story with an all-black cast, this book was made for you. It's a bit heavy on the YA tropes, but the Scott/Barda dynamic is really solid. It was released as a standalone graphic novel.

Birds of Prey Vol. 5 #1-??? by Kelly Thompson and Leonardo Romero (2023-)

Admit it, this is the reason you're here. The Cassandra Cain & Big Barda is so instantly iconic, I'm surprised no writer has paired them up sooner. It also helps that this book has the single best Barda look since Jack Kirby's original run. Plus, she gets to throw down with Wonder Woman! What's not to love? This run is still ongoing, but the first 6 issues should be getting a trade pretty soon.

(NOTE: I started writing this before BOP #8 dropped, I had no idea about that thing that happens in the newest issue.)

Stories to Avoid:

Action Comics #592-593 by John Byrne (1987)

This is not a comic book-- it's an infohazard designed to cause pain and suffering to anyone who knows of its existence. Its premise is vile and disrespectful on the surface, and it becomes more insidious when you learn the context of its creation. This pair of issues is profoundly evil, rivaling even Avengers #200 in terms of loathsomeness.

For those who dare to investigate this, Content Warnings for rape, mind control, and human trafficking.

Remember that Mister Miracle YA graphic novel I mentioned earlier? Barda is getting a graphic novel of her own this summer! It's not out at the time of writing, but the preview pages look promising!

Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr on June 18th 1963 in London survived a fourth round Knocked down against Britain's Henry Cooper on the way to 19 successive victories and at age of 22 years earned a shot at World Heavyweight boxing title held by Sonny Liston.

September 14th 1964 Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr announced that he had been converted to the Black Muslim Faith hence forth be known as Muhammad Ali and same day he was stripped of his WBA Heavy Weight boxing title because he signed return bout with Sonny Liston instead of meeting Ernie Terrell No 1 contender for WBA Heavyweight boxing title.

The Vacant WBA Heavyweight boxing title was won by Ernie Terrell that defeated Eddie Machen in Chicago in the of March 5th 1965.

Muhammad Ali defended his World Heavyweight boxing title first time against former World Heavyweight Champion Sonny Liston the famous Championship fight took place at Lewiston Maine USA, May 25th 1965.

An extra -ordinary and dramatic boxing match defending Champion Muhammad Ali in early first round successfully delivered three solid hard punches but boxing fans at ringside did not see the third blow.

The combined speed and accuracy of the blow generated enough power to lifted Sonny Liston left foot which most of his weight was placed down fell to the canvas.

The boxing fans that came for the boxing show was busy at gate to bought the tickets but surprised announcement reached the gate the Championship fight is over.

Fallout New Vegas Live-Blog Part 3

I went to REPCOON Headquarters and got to meet a bunch of ADORABLE robots!! One even gave me a tour of their museum! However when I reached the third floor there was a problem . . .

My Luck Stat wasn't high enough to pass. After looking online I found a solution! First I got an implant from Dr. Usanagi at the New Vegas Medical Clinic (and many more afterwards).

However I was still one Luck Stat short. The only way to increase it was by wearing sexy lingerie 💀 with that I could guess the password which was Ice Cream.

This game is so ridiculous I love it.

I finally downloaded the all of the DLCS! They came with a lot of cool outfits! One of them being an Armored Vault 13 Jumpsuit which I'm very 👀 curious to learn more about.

From there I met Cannibal Johnson (who has only eaten one fiend's heart). He discussed his past and when he mentioned the name Sergeant Dornan I REMEMBERED SOMETHING I HAD COMPLETELY FORGOTTEN!!!!!

YYYEEEAAAARRRRSSSS ago I watched someone play the first Fallout game. During that time ABDKL;GFKLANF;DSN I GOT OBSESSED WITH SERGEANT DORNAN AND EVEN SELFSHIPPED WITH HIM!!!

(〃^_^)ゞ Back then I used to make charts to help me keep track of my goals and I made custom ones featuring Sergeant Dornan!! I tried to make it match the game and even rewrote his iconic dialogue to fit goal.

When I remembered this I IMMEDIATELY PAUSED MY GAME, DUG THROUGH MY CLOSET AND FOUND THEM!!!!

There's WAY more but yeah (⸝⸝⸝⚆_⚆⸝⸝⸝)♡ would 100% still smooch him. He's my favorite first Fallout character.

I discovered Vault 19 with the Ex Powder Ganger members inside. I'm going to kill them and the rest of the Powder Gangers later. I wanted to do the Why Can't We Be Friends? Quest but unfortunately I don't think my Explosion Skill will ever be high enough.

At Mojave Outpost I helped NCR member Ranger Ghost with the Quest Keep Your Eyes on the Prize and along with Ranger Jackson with the Quest Can You Find it in Your Heart?

I'm trying to do the basic NCR Quests before becoming their enemy.

I went to Nellis Air Force Base and THE EXPLOSIONS ON THE WAY WERE TERRIFYING!!!! No way I would've been able to get there without a tutorial.

I like to imagine that on the way Nellis Air Force Base the loud explosions scared Lily but once inside she'd have SO MUCH fun getting to spend time with children her grandkid's ages!!

I did a bunch of side Quests for the Boomers inside like finding a missing Teddy bear named Mr. Cuddles. Along with helping Jack and Janet get together. Currently the Boomers Idolize me and once my Repair Skill is high enough I'm going to fix their solar array.

I handed over some snow globes to Jane (Mr. House's robot lover). It's weird she doesn't say goodbye and is just silent.

Richard Roundtree (July 9, 1942 – October 24, 2023) was an American actor, noted as being "the first black action hero" for his portrayal of private detective John Shaft in the 1971 film Shaft, and its four sequels, released between 1972 and 2019. For his performance in the original film, Roundtree was nominated for the Golden Globe Award for New Star of the Year – Actor in 1972.

Born July 9, 1942, in New Rochelle, New York, to John Roundtree and Kathryn Watkins, Roundtree attended New Rochelle High School; graduating in 1961. During high school, Roundtree played for the school's undefeated and nationally ranked football team. Following high school, Roundtree attended Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Illinois. Roundtree dropped out of college in 1963 to begin his acting career.

Roundtree began his professional career around 1963. Roundtree began modeling in the Ebony Fashion Fair after being scouted by Eunice W. Johnson. After his modeling success with the Fashion Fair, Roundtree began modeling for such products as Johnson Products' Duke hair grease  and Salem cigarettes. In 1967, Roundtree joined the Negro Ensemble Company. His first role while a part of the company was portraying boxing legend Jack Johnson in the company's production of The Great White Hope.  According to J. E. Franklin, he acted in the Off-Off-Broadway production of her play Mau Mau Room, by the Negro Ensemble Company Workshop Festival, at St. Mark's Playhouse in 1969, directed by Shauneille Perry.

Roundtree was a leading man in early 1970s blaxploitation films, his best-known role being detective John Shaft in the action movie, Shaft (1971) and its sequels, Shaft's Big Score! (1972) and Shaft in Africa (1973). Roundtree also appeared opposite Laurence Olivier and Ben Gazzara in Inchon (1981). On television, he played the slave Sam Bennett in the 1977 television series Roots and Dr. Daniel Reubens on Generations from 1989 to 1991. He played another private detective in 1984's City Heat opposite Clint Eastwood and Burt Reynolds. Although Roundtree worked throughout the 1990s, many of his films were not well-received, but he found success elsewhere in stage plays.

During that period, however, he reemerged on the small screen as a cultural icon. On September 19, 1991, Roundtree appeared in an episode of Beverly Hills, 90210 with Vivica A. Fox. The episode was "Ashes to Ashes", Roundtree playing Robinson Ashe Jr. Roundtree appeared in David Fincher's critically acclaimed 1995 movie Seven, and in the 2000 Shaft, again as John Shaft, with Samuel L. Jackson playing the title character, who is described as the original Shaft's nephew. Roundtree guest-starred in several episodes of the first season of Desperate Housewives as an amoral private detective. He also appeared in 1997's George of the Jungle and played a high-school vice-principal in the 2005 movie, Brick. His voice was utilized as the title character in the hit PlayStation game Akuji the Heartless, where Akuji must battle his way out of the depths of Hell at the bidding of the Baron.

In 1997–1998, Roundtree had a leading role as Phil Thomas in the short-lived Fox ensemble drama, 413 Hope St. He portrayed Booker T. Washington in the 1999 television movie Having Our Say: The Delany Sisters' First 100 Years.

Beginning in 2005, Roundtree appeared in the television series The Closer as Colonel D. B. Walter, U.S.M.C. (retired), the father of a sniper, and in Heroes as Simone's terminally ill father, Charles Deveaux. Next, Roundtree appeared as Eddie's father-in-law in episodes of Lincoln Heights. Roundtree then had a supporting role in the 2008 Speed Racer film as a racer-turned-commentator who is an icon and hero to Speed. He also appeared in the two-parter in Knight Rider (2008) as the father of FBI Agent Carrie Ravai, and co-starred as the father of the lead character on Being Mary Jane, which has aired on BET since 2013.

In 2019, Roundtree co-starred in the comedy film film What Men Want, and returned to the role of John Shaft in Shaft, a sequel to the 2000 film, opposite Samuel L. Jackson and Jessie Usher, who portray John Shaft II and John Shaft III, respectively. This time, Roundtree's character was described as Jackson's character's father, while acknowledging that Roundtree had pretended to be Jackson's Shaft's uncle in the 2000 movie. He also starred in the movie, Family Reunion in 2019.

Roundtree was married and divorced twice and had five children. His first marriage was to Mary Jane Grant, whom he married on November 27, 1963. Roundtree and Grant had two children before divorcing in December 1973. He dated actress and TV personality Cathy Lee Crosby shortly thereafter. Roundtree later married Karen M. Ciernia in September 1980; together they had three children. Roundtree and Ciernia divorced in 1998. Roundtree was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1993 and underwent a double mastectomy and chemotherapy.

Roundtree died of pancreatic cancer at his Los Angeles home on October 24, 2023, at the age of 81.

The fuzzy trim dress was a classic prom dress (or, at least the teen magazines made it seem that way) for the mid to late 90s.

I used to get my Sanrio stuff from the My Doll and Toy Shoppe in downtown Hampton, Virginia. If you said the name of the store quick, it almost sounded like "MIDOL toy shop".

Every time I would see this ad for Kaepa shoes, naive 12 year old me thought "oh my god is that girl going to burn her school down?"

I had that lava lamp keychain and the 8 ball! I used to get them from either Claire's or Spencers. I had a Cracker Jack keychain too around this time that will just randomly show up in my dreams.

Did people really have scanners to scan in their handwriting back then? I imagine they were a small fortune back then. I tried doing some research on this software, but nothing came up.

Mickey was still stuck in 1995.

I remember when the Backstreet Boys got real big when I was in high school, I thought back to the ad and wondered "wait, haven't they been around for a while?" In 1996, they didn't even have an album in the U.S. yet.

On Saturday, about 17,000 carbo-loaders at the annual pre-marathon pasta party at Tavern on the Green will dig into five dishes created by New Yorkers, one from each borough. The dishes were the winners in a contest sponsored by Creamette pasta. The judges included as many weathermen (Storm Field and Mr. G) and sportswriters (David Kaplan of The Daily News) as food experts (Patrick Clark, Bob Lape and Robin Leach).

The meals, which will be served from 4:30 to 8:30 P.M., are free to runners in the New York City Marathon, which will be held on Sunday. It Was Vulgar & It Was Beautiful by Jack Lowery

In the late 1980s, the AIDS pandemic was annihilating queer people, intravenous drug users, and communities of color in America, and disinformation about the disease ran rampant. Out of the activist group ACT UP (AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power), an art collective that called itself Gran Fury formed to campaign against corporate greed, government inaction, stigma, and public indifference to the epidemic.

Writer Jack Lowery examines Gran Fury’s art and activism from iconic images like the “Kissing Doesn’t Kill” poster to the act of dropping piles of fake bills onto the trading floor of the New York Stock Exchange. Lowery offers a complex, moving portrait of a collective and its members, who built essential solidarities with each other and whose lives evidenced the profound trauma of enduring the AIDS crisis.

Gran Fury and ACT UP’s strategies are still used frequently by the activists leading contemporary movements. In an era when structural violence and the devastation of COVID-19 continue to target the most vulnerable, this belief in the power of public art and action persists.

It Came From the Closet edited by Joe Vallese

Horror movies hold a complicated space in the hearts of the queer community: historically misogynist, and often homo- and transphobic, the genre has also been inadvertently feminist and open to subversive readings. Common tropes—such as the circumspect and resilient “final girl,” body possession, costumed villains, secret identities, and things that lurk in the closet—spark moments of eerie familiarity and affective connection. Still, viewers often remain tasked with reading themselves into beloved films, seeking out characters and set pieces that speak to, mirror, and parallel the unique ways queerness encounters the world.

It Came from the Closet features twenty-five original essays by writers speaking to this relationship, through connections both empowering and oppressive. From Carmen Maria Machado on "Jennifer’s Body", Jude Ellison S. Doyle on "In My Skin", Addie Tsai on "Dead Ringers", and many more, these conversations convey the rich reciprocity between queerness and horror.

The Maze and the Snowstorm:

An Analysis of Symbolism and Central Themes of The Shining

Stanley Kubrick and Diane Johnson’s The Shining (1980) is often referred to as one of the best-directed films ever made. While this is in part due to the iconic camerawork in the movie, haunting soundtrack and solid characterization of the protagonists, in my opinion what really sets it apart is its use of symbolic imagery to communicate subconscious messages that unsettle the audience beyond the outward content of the film itself. In this essay, I will be discussing the repeating symbols of the maze and the snowstorm, and how they represent the central themes of madness and isolation in the film, respectively.

THE MAZE

Firstly, the Overlook Maze. Perhaps one of the most memorable visuals in the film, the maze is a recurring symbol in the movie: in the form of the actual physical maze, but also mirrored in the layout of the Overlook Hotel itself, with its high ceilings and narrow corridors that contribute so much to the film’s distinctive mise en scène.

While this set design serves its purpose in setting the claustrophobic, paranoia-inducing atmosphere of the film, I believe it also acts as a visual representation of Jack’s descent into madness, and the reality break experienced by all three protagonists. I feel this connection is best represented by the scenes from 26:20 to 27:40, where shots of Wendy and Danny navigating the maze are interspersed with Jack roaming the twists and turns of the Hotel, seemingly in a near-manic state.

THE SNOWSTORM

Going back to the mise en scène of the film, something else that stood out to me the most about the film’s production design was the busy, maximalist patterns and vivid colors present in the background of most shots set at the Overlook Hotel, be it set decor, or the clothing of the actors themselves. While this contributes massively to the dizzying, almost psychedelic visual look of the film, it also makes the cut to the snowstorm far more visually jarring to the viewer. The vast, empty white scenescape of the snowstorm contrasts heavily against the warmer, more “filled” look of shots filmed inside the hotel, which I think really drives home one of the central motifs of the film: isolation. 

The snowstorm is initially what confines the Torrances to the Outlook Hotel, and physically isolates them from the outside world, and is therefore, by extension, the catalyst to Jack’s rapid descent into madness. I believe there is also an element of personal isolation experienced by each family member (each represented by the long tracking shots centered on each character scattered throughout the film): Jack’s isolation caused by alcoholism and his struggles to write, Wendy’s isolation caused by her strained relationship with her husband, and Danny’s isolation caused by his psychic abilities and disconnect from his parents.

In summary, I believe one of the main strengths of the film lies in the main themes of the film, madness and isolation, being further emphasized by their physical representations in the form of the maze and the snowstorm.
