this might just be a me thing, but I’m such a fan of characters not referring to themselves with their nickname. like. they’re doing a whole inner monologue, and it’s sad, and depressing, and generally pathetic, but then their best friend calls them their nickname and it’s like. oh. yeah :)

because they may suck in their own heads. they could very well be the worst person alive in their own little brains. but when someone they care about calls them that one thing with that one tone of voice, suddenly they suck a little less. suddenly they’re less of a screw up. suddenly the serotonin hits their system and it’s like watching a light come on.

they might not be good enough, but the person everyone thinks they are is, and secretly, that makes them feel just a little bit better.

This boy is trouble. That is something that David Jacobs knew for sure. From the moment he crashed against David’s chest he knew it. The mumbled half apology that the boy mumbled as he bolted away did nothing to change this fact. He was trouble. The two boys who chased him in tow proved David’s point even further. The smartly dressed scary looking ones gave the boy good chase but he was long gone. Far away, David hoped. He was far far away where he wouldn’t cause any trouble for the Jacobs’ boys. At least, he was for a moment. If David had known at the time that the moment he would walk through those ridiculously oversized gates he would be inviting trouble incarnate directly into he life he would have turned around. David Jacobs would have turned right around and marched him and his brother right over to the Sun, or the Tribune, or even all the way up to Brooklyn if he had to. David Jacobs would have been responsible, David Jacobs would have not invited the boy back into his life. But David Jacobs knew none of this, and so, he marched straight through the gates of the world, straight into the belly of the beast, and straight into trouble. He couldn’t look up, he knew from the moment they made contact, from the tanned arms that steadied him, to the quiet chuckle when he wobbled, to the red scarf tied around his neck. Yes, David Jacobs knew at that exact moment he had fallen straight into the arms of trouble, and as he slowly raised his eyes to meet those of the boy he was currently holding onto, trouble itself smiled at him, “Twice in one day huh? Think it’s fate?”
