Could you explain your system like why are some of your alters fictional characters?

Hi! We’re still sick but now that I’m feelin a little better (sleeping straight for almost a whole day because we kept waking up in the middle of the night due to feeling awful) I think I can answerjshdjdh

So there are different kinds of headmates in systems, and for this ask, we’ll focus on insources and introjects

Insourced people are like,, they’re what you probably know about the most based on this ask. They are basically- or could be described as- headmate made “from scratch”. Whether they have their own backstory or not, they could be based on or influenced by some other factors but they are not “a straight rip/based on” an already existing character or person

Examples of insourced people we have right now are all the littles, Dakota, Micah, Jaiden, Matthew (we have more but we’re like 20+ of us)

Now Introjects- they can be classified under 2 categories if you’d like:

Factives: Based on real life/historical people. For example, we have a factive of Ellen Page (except we call her a factive-ISH because she’s still a little different, plus her name is Louise)

Fictives: Based on fictional characters. For example we have our main fronting circle (Kris (Deltarune), Chara (Undertale), Crowley (Good Omens), Peter (Post Endgame MCU/Marvel), Sal (Sally Face)

Fictives and Factives may or may not be almost exactly like their source (which media/person they come from) counterparts- whether they are close to canon (the events that happen in their source) or VERY divergent is completely valid.

Another term that may be seen is canon which may be defined as “your timeline”

E.g. “my canon is different from source canon”

So far all of the Fictives in our system are very close to canon,

But it does NOT stop them from growing, learning different things, or just being different overtime or even the moment they arrive

NOW, why do systems have introjects? (I know you asked about fictional characters in my system but I’m gonna make it general to introjects)

I’m not an expert, I’m not even diagnosed, but I’ve had a theory that I’ve also read from other people in systems/talked to them; and doing research on Fictives/introjects have helped

Making an alter is a long/hard job for the brain, it’s not necessarily too extremely hard but borrowing a character from a source makes it an easier job— it’s faster when you don’t have to make your own “character” and you can just go “hey we need someone like that” and bring them in

For example, when Crowley split, it was when we were surrounded by Chara’s trigger quite a lot— so much that Chara was so affected that they couldn’t function properly, being surrounded by flashbacks and their trigger (being in a physical church and having masses 4 times everyday oh my god)

So I guess you can say our brain went “time to bring out another person to handle Not Liking God”

Peter I can theorize is just another kid in the circle of “all of us have dad issues because he’s mildly absent all the time” and is a continuation of me coping over an old friend’s death with how he’s having trouble coping with tony starks death- plus his PTSD symptoms are still kind of severe

In short, Introjects are like ANY other headmate/alter

It just so happens that they are from a source

Whether they’re from an AU or your brain wrote the heaviest fan fiction doesn’t change anything about how alters are made for a reason whether we know what that is or not, whether if it’s sad they’re here or not

EDIT: because of how “faster” it is for the brain/system to bring in a Fictive, it’s completely understandable why most polyfragmented systems or big systems would have a lot of Fictives

Just wanted to sticky note a random decision to answer one of the discussion starters;

“We’re all parts of one individual personality”

When Jaiden first appeared he already subscribed to that idea or theory, and I subscribed to it too! Until now I do, not in a religious way but in a “that makes a lot of sense” and it makes me mildly analyze my people to see why they were made, like why they were created or appeared in this time, and what part of me did they come from? I especially when I realized I felt like I am losing parts of myself whenever a new person appears

So with the original or first people to have appeared, under there falls Jaiden and Alven (and Kobe?) (Kobe doesn’t ask these questions and doesn’t have a theory on it, but she’s part of the original trio who’s still here), they believe that they’re all parts of one personality that split off,

But just now while reading this some of my people commented

So Jaiden and Alven still believe in that, Chara being a fictive/introject finds it very weird and confusing still, I don’t blame them since they’re still very new. Matthew doesn’t really like that idea, and it makes sense because he’s struggling with existential crises a lot ,

Louise has been in a system for a really Long time, she was part of Joseph’s subsystem before becoming a part of mine (I don’t know how that works but my psychiatrist said it can happen sjhdjdhdjdh) so she understands the idea and thinks it’s true

I do not like it at all. I know it’s probably true but thinking about it makes me feel sick and weird. - Matt

We don’t have a therapist helping us with our system thing (we’re trying to look for someone lowkey without my parents knowing) but I think the reason some of us are weird about the idea of accepting we’re all parts of one individual personality is because we’re afraid of integration? Jaidena nd Alven haven’t integrated yet so it’s proof believing in the idea wont make you “”disappear””, but I can definitely feel how Matthew feels uncomfortable about it.

Symptoms of Dissociation

Book club, best club! Time for more  Coping with Trauma Related Dissociation, by Suzette Boon, Kathy Steele and Onno Van Der Hart! 

Grab a notepad and as you read, write down any experiences that fit. If you’re a book violator like me, give your alters different colored highlighters and let everybody take a pass through. My book looks like unicorn vomit, yours can too!

Problems with Identity of Sense of Self

“Dissociative parts of the personality are not actually separate identities of personalities in one body, but rather parts of a single individual that are not yet functioning together in a smooth, coordinated and flexible way.”

Reading that can be tough for some parts to hear, but I guess I’m not one of those parts. I know we’re all one person. Each part of us is missing years of memories, has a specific behavioral profile designed to help us escape our origin and thrive as an adult, and and should fit together like a puzzle.  

Experiencing Too Little: Dissociative Symptoms Involving Apparent Loss of Functions This section covers topics like amnesia, time distortions, knowledge or skill loss, emotional and physical numbness, depersonalization and derealization. It covers each area in detail and tries to make clear distinctions between “normal” and “dissociative disorder” levels of each symptom, to give you a benchmark. If this shit looks familiar, you need to find a therapist and tell them.

Experiencing Too Much: Dissociative Symptoms Involving Intrusions

“Dissociative instructions are those symptoms that occur when one dissociative part intrudes into the experience of another. Intrusions may happen in any arena of experience: memories, thoughts, feelings, perceptions, ideas, wishes, needs, movements or behaviors.”

Topics include flashbacks, hearing voices, etc. It’s important to remember that dissociative intrusions are also a common symptom of PTSD; they don’t imply or equate to DID.

Other Changes in Awareness This section covers a variety of symptoms that occur in ‘normals’ and those that are also found in other mental disorders. They’re often experienced by those with dissociative disorders, but are not unique to them.

Discussion Starters

For those of you who DON’T ascribe to the theory “we’re all parts of one individual personality”, what’s your perspective? I’m not looking for an argument or to tell you that you’re wrong: I’m curious. What are your beliefs about your parts and identity, and how does that tie into your treatment?  

Any #meirl moments or feelings? Apprehension, or sad acknowledgement? How about validation? 

Anything you’re glad you suddenly don’t do, and scared that maybe you will? That’s a really common feeling when you read about any health condition, mental or physical.

Are you practicing grounding every single day? It takes about 21 days of regular practice to make a habit stick. 15 minutes of effort, any time, any place, any where. You can do this, you can literally take control of some of your symptoms, yourself. If you’re not, why? This is a no-shame zone, and there are lots of legitimate reasons people can find this exercise hard.
