2023 Fic Stats

February 2023, I decided to start tracking the amount of fic I read. I travelled a lot last year, quite a bit more than normal. I read a lot of fic when I travel.

I did a half year update at the end of June 2023. Between February and June, I read just under 13 million words.

February through December, I read just over 30 million words and 2,049 individual fic (though several are the same fic on a reread).

"Diamond in the Rough" Contest!!!

Now that my baseball story is nearing the home stretch, I thought I'd give all the wonderful readers (and anyone else who might be interested) an opportunity to weigh in on what songs they think are playing when each player steps to the plate--or when the relievers enter the game!! Do you think Jaime goes with "Roar"? That Thoros Myr enters the game to "Fireball"? What song would Cleos choose, anyway? I'd love to know what you guys think, so please send me all your suggestions and some of them may be used in the story at some point!

But Dee, you say, didn't you mention a contest? Why, yes, yes I did. See, I've had Brienne's walk-up music picked out almost from the beginning, and it will make an appearance in the story. If you successfully guess what the song is before then, I will happily write a story for you based on whatever you choose!

My #1 post of 2022

So. Book!Jaime and book!Brienne or show!Jaime and show!Brienne. Not as a couple or their relationship (per se) but as separate characters. :)

Book!Jaime and Book!Brienne, by a thousand miles. Warning: I'm in full on rant mode.

We may have gotten glimpses of book Jaime in the show, but as time has gone on, I've realized more and more that we never truly got book Jaime, and it's mostly because Dumb and Dumber hated Jaime as a character. Take, for example, Jaime's iconic line, "The things I do for love" just before he shoves Bran out the tower window. In the book, this scene is told through Bran's POV and he hears Jaime say it with loathing. On the show, Jaime tosses out the line as if to say, "oh well" and probably went back to screwing Cersei. It was just the first step of their assassination of Jaime.

Book!Jaime is a man who struggles to figure out what he's going to do with his life when the one thing that defined him was gone. He's smarter than many give him credit for--including his own siblings--and he shows this throughout his journey in the Riverlands in AFFC. He's figuring out what kind of man he wants to be, and we get a chance to see him in the company of people who like and appreciate him in spite of him being the reviled "Kingslayer." Most importantly, book!Jaime is a man of agency--he names Oathkeeper when he gives it to Brienne, he turns Cersei down when she comes to the White Sword Tower to seduce him into killing Tyrion, and he figures out the best way to bring peace to the Riverlands.

Show!Jaime has almost none, with Dumb and Dumber having decided to make him little more than Cersei's faithful lapdog who came running every time she wanted him. And during the brief times he was with Brienne after their trip through the Riverlands, it felt like the good things he did were at her suggestion--including his decision join the North in the fight against the Others after she told him to "fuck loyalty." It was, quite frankly, their worst interpretation of any character on the show. I don't see how someone can read Jaime's POV from his return to King's Landing in ASOS through his one chapter in ADWD and portray him the way they did. Only possible explanation? They hated Jaime as a character and decided to treat him as such. One of them even referred to Jaime as a "monster" in the season 2 episode where he kills his cousin. The only monstrous thing Jaime does in the entire series to this point is shoving Bran out that window, which don't get me wrong, IS A VERY BAD THING TO DO but...really? "Monster?" No.

The changes made to Brienne from book to show happened, in good part, because they aged her up and took away her AFFC storyline, replacing it instead with her staring at a window until the convenient moment when she decided to take vengeance on Stannis right as Sansa needed her to be there. Book!Brienne is an innocent, noble, idealistic girl who joined the war for love of Renly. She's never even killed anyone and cried when her master-at-arms, Goodwin, had her kill piglets to get a mere idea of what it would be like.

Show!Brienne is older, has seen more of the world, and killing clearly doesn't bother her (especially when you remember the scene where she kills the three Stark men, the last one slowly). She still retains some of Brienne's idealism and has a very strong sense of honor and is definitely stubborn, but book!Brienne wants to be both a lady and a knight. Show!Brienne is forever telling people she's not a lady. The softness that made me fall in love with book!Brienne is missing in her show counterpart. Yes, show!Brienne falls apart when Renly dies and when Jaime leaves her in the Winterfell courtyard, but we see her calm and composed soon after each event. Book!Brienne was near inconsolable after the loss of Renly and after learning of Catelyn's death.

Overall, however, I don't think they did near as much damage to Brienne as a character as they did to Jaime, which is why her show counterpart doesn't anger me as much as his. One of my favorite pieces of fanart has the book versions meeting their show versions. Book!Brienne is startled to meet show!Brienne, who stares up at her in awe. Meanwhile, book!Jaime gives show!Jaime a golden bitch slap. Kinda sums up my feelings.

j/b 2021 fic exchange recs

Okay, reveals are almost upon us and I’ve read half or fewer of the exchange fics, but here are my favorites—from the main collection, I’ll do another post for Lil Oathkeepers—so far. There’s a lot of great stuff out there, but some of these are not getting nearly as much attention as they deserve, so don’t sleep on:

something different

My utterly GLORIOUS and PERFECT gift fic, which is, among other things, a brilliant character study of Brienne’s gender feels, a post-canon reconciliation fix-it that made me sigh with emotion, and a tour-de-force of the best kind of scorching hot smut—the kind that uses the sex to illuminate and expand our understanding of the people having it and the relationship between them. And there’s pegging, to boot. I have been so blessed!

show me where your skin begins

I do not even know where to BEGIN describing this incredible enemies-to-lovers space AU with bonus extremely hot-and-tender bondage. I would read a whole novel set in this universe; the worldbuilding is rich and the plot is compelling and the romance hits all my favorite notes for these two and did I mention it’s also incredibly hot? and tender? tl;dr I am in awe and have publicly challenged the author to a duel.

in the dark, i thought i saw you

A beautifully angsty S7 canon divergence where the sept explosion is the breaking point for Jaime, and both he and Brienne end up in King’s Landing afterwards as captives of a slowly crumbling Cersei, who in turn finds herself unexpectedly drawn to Brienne. The J/B arc is wonderful, but but the great achievement here is one of the best takes on Cersei I've ever read.

electric boogaloo

An unusual fantasy AU with stunning worldbuilding, clever structure, and some lovely, vigorous prose—plus the atmosphere between Brienne and Jaime is quite literally electric.

Respect

This is a story about how much Jaime enjoys watching Brienne beat the crap out of men who don’t respect her—a premise I naturally find delightful—but it’s also a striking bit of character work, and the writing is excellent.

Second Hand News

I’ve always wanted more fic focusing on how Jaime and Brienne’s relationship developed in the journey from Harrenhal back to King’s Landing, and this missing scene focused on how they react to the news of the Red Wedding really delivers—it’s sad and tender and evokes their growing intimacy beautifully.

however long the night, the dawn will break again

A short but surprisingly capacious story of Jaime and Brienne as undercover agents in a wartime occupied Westeros—I’m astonished by how much story this manages to fit into 3.5K words, and it’s vivid and hot and full of yearning.

safe

A very sexy, exquisitely-written, exes-to-lovers TRAIN HEIST story, with loads of competence kink and a compressed slow burn that finally ignites to exhilarating effect. Just delightful, and I loved the bonus introduction to safecracking 101.

Ding Dong Ditch, Baby

An accidental baby acquisition—the baby is of the nephew variety—fic that delivers both hilarious hijinks and surprising emotional depths. this feels like a classic screwball comedy, but also the beginning of a tender romance.

ain’t no one in this room alone

You might not think a Ted Lasso/Game of Thrones crossover could work, but this story is here to prove you as wrong as anyone who ever doubted a Ted, or a Brienne (and it’s very funny to boot, with some delightfully clever choices made in meshing these worlds together).

with all the years between us

I SWORE I wasn’t going to start reading this while it was still a WIP, despite the premise being basically catnip to me—a S8 fixit with slow reconciliation and political marriage and complicated family dynamics—but I gave in and inhaled all of the existing chapters today. It’s even better than I’d hoped.

I participated in the Jaime x Brienne Fic Exchange this year! I’ve never done an exchange before and it was so fun!

First up: if you haven’t read the fic @brynnmck wrote for me, show me where my skin begins, RUN, don’t walk, and read it ASAP. It has EVERYTHING I could ever have wanted. Jaime and Brienne on the run while handcuffed together! a cyborg bear! Sci-Fi AU! With absolutely killer world building! Rope bondage! Pegging! SO MANY FEELINGS. Just. EVERYTHING. It is perfect and I love it and I love her and I did propose as soon as I found out who the mystery author responsible for it was and we will be very happy together.

Thanks very much to the @jaime-brienne-fic-exchange team for putting this whole thing together once again – your efforts are very much appreciated! I'll start off with my own fics, but I have some shout-outs at the end of this long post.

Without further ado, here are the two very different genre stories I wrote for @albatrossisland:

A Small Patch of Sky

Summary:

‘Stranded with his captor on a barely habitable planet’ is probably up there on the list of inconvenient things that have happened in Jaime Lannister’s lifetime.

It really doesn’t help that he’s also missing a hand.

[Notes] This is a one-shot with lots of unexpected twists and turns, which I somehow managed to conjure up in a week when I realised I wouldn't be able to finish the other story in time. Written from Jaime's POV, it's sort of a take on their road trip, but I can't say much else that won't be better experienced as a surprise. It's a fun one (well, I had fun writing it anyway, barring a few crises) that has some of the vibes of The Mandalorian and stole plot points from an episode of the animation anthology series Love, Death & Robots.

Perhaps it hadn’t seemed like much to her, but they were on different sides of the war, then, and she should have let him bleed out where she found him on the edge of her family’s farm.

[Notes] If you want to read about fifty-year-old Jaime Lannister having a mid-life crisis and unexpectedly falling in love because of it, then boy do I have the story for you! Also, when I say this is set on a farm in a vaguely late-19th-century Westeros, I really mean this in the sense that the farm is just... there? I started writing this even before the exchange was announced, inspired by a (non-weirwood) dream. It's meant to be a quieter, more pared-down exploration of Jaime and Brienne meeting again when they're older, after having led entirely separate lives. At least, it was pared down until they started having emotions and, uh, sex. It's still a WIP, but I do think it's one of my best stories, so I hope you'll give it a chance!

Now that I've gotten the self-promotion out of the way, I'd like to give a shout-out to my lovely gift fic, lay this body down by thebothsandneithers (if this person is on Tumblr, please let me know so I can tag them!). My prompt was the poem ‘Words, Wide Night’ by Carol Ann Duffy, and I never could have imagined that this sweeping canon-adjacent story with soulmate and fairy tale elements would come from it. They did a really admirable job of weaving together their own takes on plot points from canon, all while maintaining this deep connection between Jaime and Brienne, who see each other in their dreams long before meeting in person. There are some killer lines in this story too. Thank you so much again!

I no longer do much reading, so I won't be able to do any recs for this exchange. However, I'd like to recommend the fics by my two irreplaceable betas. First, safe by @it-may-be-dull-but-im-determined (a.k.a. jencat), a compelling and beautifully-written heist fic in which Jaime and Brienne – who have history – work to break into a safe belonging to Petyr Baelish. Also, that safe is on a train. Also, they have sex on that train, naturally. I beta-ed this fic, and I have to say my favourite chapter is the one in which Brienne breaks into the (Valyrian!) safe, and how that whole process interweaves with her memories. It's really elegantly and creatively done. GO READ THIS!

@firesign23 (a.k.a. Roccolinde) surprises absolutely no one by writing more than one fic for this exchange. First, however long the night, the dawn will break again, a World War II AU response to an amazing ‘sexy weapons removal’ prompt. Second, with all the years between us, YET ANOTHER S8 fix-it, which she never seems to tire of writing and always finds new ways of approaching. GO READ THESE TOO!

J/B Exchange 2021 recs, part 2

I still have MANY fics to read but I wanted to rec a few fics from the @jaime-brienne-fic-exchange that have already been beloved by many but I beta-ed/helped beta them and also I love them and just want to flail about them. So. Let’s just call these the usual sus-recs (SORRY).

First, @forbiddenfantasies1′s EXCELLENT camboy!Jaime fic, they say your body is full of sin (it’s the door through which peace begins) , which is 56K of FANTASTIC smut and feelings. Jessi is so good at marrying hornt and heartfelt and I feel like this is her crowning achievement so far (which is saying something)--it’s hot as fuck and that alone would be enough reason to read it, but it’s also such a beautiful story about having the courage to be vulnerable, and about the crucial human magic of seeing someone and being seen by them, and I love it very much. (It is also about the inherent eroticism of food/food preparation which I am ALSO very here for, ahem.) So if somehow you’ve missed this one, I highly recommend it!

And then @sdwolfpup came out SWINGING this year with a flex of three different fics that all showcase different incarnations of her talent.

First there’s The promise of a day (3K, rated T), which is an achy and lyrical post-book-canon fic that packs SO MUCH into a small space. It’s Jaime and Brienne hiding out, trying to protect their young charges, and as much as I love an established-relationship Jaime and Brienne who are in perfect sync, I love the way this fic puts a little friction between them yet makes it so clear that they’re utterly devoted to each other even when they don’t quite agree on things that are important to them both. It feels very real, and their connection and the stakes of what they’re facing feel so deep and complex, and the fic as a whole balances angst and love and hope so perfectly. Like SDW said in her A/N, this wasn’t her initial idea for this exchange, but as I said to her when she sent it to me, I’m SO glad it exists in the world because it’s wonderful.

Then there’s The beginning of devotion (10.6K, rated T), which is an adorable fic that’s very cleverly built around the idea of Brienne bringing Jaime along with her to inspect the crumbling Evenfall Hall that she’s just inherited. There is some terrific mutual pining here, and the way the past and present of their relationship and the keep itself unfolds as they move from room to room is lovely. It’s also got some hilarious lines--”It looks like a structural vine” has been making me laugh for weeks--and it’s very swoony and the tension between them is so sharp and then soft, and it involves Jaime calling Brienne “Stacks” which is one of my favorite SDW Brienne nicknames in a very crowded field. So good!!

AND THEN. There is the LOK 2 Hot 2 Horny (WIP, 20K so far, rated E eventually), which some people have unofficially dubbed Horny Island, which makes me VERY HAPPY, just like this fic. SDW made me watch this show with her and when she told me the premise--ten very horny fools on an island where they’re unexpectedly informed they’re not allowed to have any sexual contact--I was like “hmm okay” and then suddenly found myself INVESTED and also seeing the light of what a GENIUS JB AU it would make. The fic is indeed hilarious (Hyle’s nonsense ALONE is worth the price of admission, but there’s also some great banter and hysterical descriptions and dialogue and all sorts of delightful things), and it is indeed RIDICULOUSLY hot with the mostly-desperately-unresolved sexual tension, but there’s also a really lovely emotional throughline about making meaningful connections with people, which I won’t say too much about because it’s still developing, but. It’s very good already and where it’s going is also very good and now is the perfect time to make yourself a fruity drink and hop on board!

JB Fic Exchange Recs - AU Multi-Chapter

Our fanfic cup runneth over, it really does! Fics so good I want to marry them (sorry hubs). You should definitely check the following @jaime-brienne-fic-exchange fics out as soon as you have a chance (along with all the others available too)!

Teach Me the Courage of Stars - Jaime is a Duke who is left to care for his niece and nephew on his own. Catelyn, Duchess of Winterfell, is an amazing friend who has the idea that a certain other friend of hers might be able to help him out. I loved the regency aspect of this and all of the wonderful letter correspondence through which we get to know our beloved characters. I love the secret identity aspect, the sibling relationships, the science, the storms. This fic is intelligent, fun, romantic, and eventually whew steamy! Check it out!

Excerpt 1 (from one of Jaime's letters): Alas, it seems, however, my wish to no longer be grieving, to once more be returned to my days as a bachelor, does not simply manifest it. Instead, I spend my days determining how to best be a father to my orphaned niece and nephew, and break propriety by introducing myself to a new acquaintance via the written word. Yours respectfully, Jaime Lannister Excerpt 2: Jaime knocked on the door, and he was greeted by a starry-eyed Brienne. Her hair was down in a loose braid, and the storm had wisps of hair escaping the braid to stand on end, and Jaime was utterly charmed by the ridiculousness of it. She was wrapped practically in a dressing gown of her own, but Jaime couldn’t help but realize that Brienne was surely wearing naught but her sleeping shift underneath it.

Sweet wounded Warrior, control yourself, dammit.

“Casterly!” Brienne exclaimed, a smile lighting up her face like the lightning crackling from the window. She covered her mouth the instant the name he had given Tourmaline leave to use had escaped, and Jaime’s hand flexed with a sudden desire to drag that hand away from her mouth. When they had first met, Jaime had been taken aback by the inches she had over him, and he wished he could blame scientific curiosity on his desire to understand what kissing Brienne in all her glorious height would feel like. Vows - 27 Dresses inspired JB fic. Jaime gets to know Brienne as the subject of a blog article related to her extensive wedding party experience. The closet o' past bridesmaid/best woman dresses/outfits scene is great. There's cake tasting. Renly & Loras are perfectly self-absorbed grooms-to-be. Jaime can paint centerpieces! Enjoyed the sibling relationships in this one too. There's some Sansa/Jaime time. There are grand gestures. This fic is just so funny, cute, relatable, and sweet with much great JB banter. It left me very happy!

Excerpt 1: “I always thought I’d never meet someone who’d been to nearly as many weddings as me,” Jaime said. “But you’re pretty close.”

Brienne looked at him then like he was being strange. “Well I don’t particularly like weddings,” she said. “Not like you do.”

Well Jaime didn’t particularly like weddings anymore either, but he couldn’t come out and say that, now could he?

“What don’t you like about them, Blue?” he asked. She shot him another one of her angry looks.

“I just — people spend all that money, and it doesn’t guarantee anything besides a nice party. And half the time the more money you spend, the least likely you are to make it. And people get so wrapped up in things that don’t matter, and —”

“Then why be in twenty-seven of them?”

Brienne sighed, like Jaime was an absolute idiot. He kind of felt like one. “I just want my friends to be happy.” She seemed embarrassed by the answer. Jaime thought it was rather nice. Excerpt 2: He chuckled and pulled her a little closer, so his lips were very near her ear. “The night’s almost over, Blue. I’ve got all the cold hard facts. But you can’t really write up a wedding without fully experiencing it.” He spun them in a lazy circle. “So I’m trying to make the most of the night before it’s over.”

“Surely there are other girls you’d rather dance with,” Brienne said, and immediately kicked herself. Why was she trying to convince Jaime to leave her side?

“No,” he said, sounding more confident than Brienne felt. “I don’t think there are.” If I got everything I want, would it be everything I need? - This involves some role reversal, which was really cool to see explored. Selwyn in this fic is the Tywin-style father and Brienne is the product of her upbringing trying to figure out if she knows who she really is and if that's what she wants for her life. Jaime's the client (and younger man) she's going to fake date to appease her dad's old-fashioned edict that she needs to find a suitable husband. And we know how these fake dating situations usually turn out... 😉

Excerpt 1: Brienne exhaled. In for a penny, in for a pound. “My father is…. somewhat old-fashioned,” she said slowly. “I want to take on a bigger role here in the company, but he wants me to get married and pop out the next generation. If I were to bring a date to the fundraising gala that we organize each year for the opera house, he might be persuaded to consider your proposal.” And give her the promotion she had more than earned.

Jaime leaned back in his seat, a smile playing at the corners of his mouth. “Are you asking me on a date, Ms. Tarth?”

She rolled her eyes. “Think of it as a black-tie business meeting. There will be other potential investors there. I could make sure you have a chance to chat with them.”

His green eyes glinted dangerously at her as his smile expanded into a full-fledged grin. “Then how can I say no?” Excerpt 2: “This isn’t going to be fun,” Brienne said darkly, as they climbed into the town car. Because heavens forbid that Brienne drive herself to the giant mausoleum where she’d been raised.

“So you’ve said.” Jaime looked like he couldn’t decide whether he should be amused or worried. “Does he often execute his dinner guests?”

“Only on days that end in Y,” she muttered, smoothing the skirt of her dress obsessively.

Jaime reached over and grabbed her hand with his real one. “Relax, Brienne. We are just going to go have dinner, mention that we’re taking things slow, and I’ll throw some longing looks at you and talk about how I want a dozen kids.”

“A dozen?” She stopped fidgeting to look at him skeptically. “Do you know how much college tuition runs these days? Also, I’m thirty-three. Do you expect me to be continuously pregnant for 12 years, or am I supposed to be pushing out kids into my fifties?”

Jaime just grinned, totally unrepentant. “We can negotiate that, I suppose. Good thing for you I’m so young and virile.”

She rolled her eyes, and hoped she wouldn’t blush. She absolutely hadn’t thought about what he’d be like in bed. Not at all. This was a purely business arrangement. Or so she kept having to remind herself. Golden and Green - Brienne is a medical sourleaf farmer, Senator Tywin wants to shut her farm down, and Jaime wants to try sourleaf to get relief from his post-accident pain. He goes to Evenstar Farms, uses a fake name, and meets kind, helpful, and intriguing Brienne. The farm setting is rich with sunsets and Brienne's cottage home complete with a pretty special library nook. Jaime's living a lie on borrowed time while falling hard for Brienne. Read and figure out how that all unfolds. This was a very satisfying story and I just loved both of their characters a ton in it.

Excerpt 1: When they walked back around the barn, Jaime turned and looked over the sourleaf fields to the gently sloping hills which gave way to a dark green line of pine forest. The sun began to dip lower in the sky, bathing everything in a soft golden light.

“It’s magical.” The words were out of Jaime’s mouth before his head could catch up, and he winced at the cheesy pronouncement. But Brienne just looked over at him and smiled, seemingly overjoyed that someone appreciated the place as much as she did.

Excerpt 2:

Brienne: Yes. Don't work yourself to death, ok?

Jaime: You either. We haven’t even had our first date yet.

Brienne’s stomach swooped thinking about going on an actual date at all, much less a date with Jaime, the warrior made flesh, who actually seemed to like her? This can’t be real, Brienne thought. There has to be a catch.

Lost Dream of Tarth - Jaime as a silent film star in 1925 with a passion for archaeology and Brienne as the archaeologist who could use his funding to excavate on the lost island of Tarth. Of course, he wants to be more involved than that... Brienne's crew is fantastic. Their discoveries are wonderful. This fic is adventurous and romantic and touching and fun.

Excerpt:

“Well Lannister, you might not know this, but being an archaeologist is more than just dressing the part and posing in front of rocks, unfortunately for you.” She sniffed. “There are boring parts, as you’ll undoubtedly notice.” She walked toward the women, and nodded to them. “You’ll soon realize that the time of the reckless archaeologist who inadvertently destroys artifacts is long over. And with regards to Oberyn, I suspect what you saw of him is only what he is willing to show you. He had your movie star attention span in mind, surely, when he led you about.”

they say your body is full of sin (it's the door through where peace begins) - The 55,956 word fic about five times Jaime and Brienne masturbated and one time they didn't (and we’d all read twice that many words for this story, I’d imagine!). I cannot express to you just how incredibly hot this fic is. It is also a wonderful look at Jaime's escape from his toxic family and Brienne embracing the knight she is. And I have legitimately never wanted to be able to log in somewhere and watch Jaime be a camboy (and a baking one at that) but I sure as hell do now! Get some wine and a decadent dessert and enjoy!

Excerpt 1: Now here he was, spreading his legs in the chair, one hand resting on his chest, his thumb idly dragging across his collarbone, while he let the fingers on his belly slowly dip down to tap against the button of his jeans. "You know," he said thoughtfully, "When my friend first told me about this website, there was a voice in my head telling me that nobody would be interested." He trailed his index finger around the snap, glancing down a little for the sole purpose of looking back at the camera through his eyelashes. "I'm not exactly a young man anymore, as I'm sure you can see." He popped his jeans open, the snapping sound loud in the quiet of his room, and fought back a delighted smile as more tokens appeared.

"I didn't know if anyone would want to see me like this, if anyone would pass over the college boys to watch a man who's nearly forty. But you're here aren't you?”

Excerpt 2: He smiled at the screen again, his eyes bright. "You really are a Knight huh? Just swooping in to save the day. I hope this isn't the last time you join me on my channel. I don't always need to be saved, but I like knowing I can be."

Brienne swallowed as she took in the two bright spots of color on his cheeks, the joy so clearly illuminated in his eyes, and groaned. I can't believe I'm going to do this, she thought, even as she typed in I will, and saw his smile grow even wider. I am such a fucking idiot, she added as she tipped him twenty tokens before hurriedly exiting the channel.

I am never going to be able to watch The Grand Maester Bake Off ever, ever again.

All but one are Jaime x Brienne.

My takeaway from it: I need to: write more monster fucking, space aus, and weird west stories, and finish the Quest fic.

Jaime Lannister and the Quest for the Missing Sword

Summary: "You told me you found Tarth." Jaime narrowed his eyes at Tyrion. "Here, in the frozen North. You mock me still."The woman jerked. Her expression was easily readable for a moment. Surprise. Fear. Hope?It was gone before he could decide.Tyrion looked between them. "Sweet brother," he said in that knowing tone. "I present to you Brienne, the last of the Tarths."

Archaeologist and librarian AU of a sort. My first story with Jaime POV chapters. I love writing Brienne’s POV, but dual POVs worked best here. Trying to wrap this up soon.

Smoke and Mirrors

Summary: Jaime was a feast for the senses.

Modern AU. I have notes on a much longer chefs AU, but I had to cut it back because of the word limit on the exchange. The longer version will be written eventually.

Winter Knights and Spring

Summary: They were winter knights still living for the spring.

Book canon. I wanted to write something sweet and fluffy. I think it worked.

Tell Me a Story

Summary: Tarth has its fair share of ghost stories. The drowned, ships of the dead, sweet songs luring men out to sea.

Book canon. I love the idea of Brienne singing for Jaime when she never allowed herself to sing for Renly or Cat. What better place to write it than in a story about stories and songs. Shame I don’t actually write songs, or I would have included one.

Never Easy Prey

Summary: The sun was almost gone by the time she made it to the source of the glint, a long, narrow metal box. Unlocked. Easy to open. Inside, a small pack filled with packets of pureed something. Food, from what she'd seen elsewhere, but there was no telling what went into it. Water. A spear taller than she was and surprisingly light. The inside of the lid was completely covered in writing. Most symbols she had never seen before. One short line looked Yautja. And a human word. English word. Run.

Alien vs. Predator, Scar x Alexa Woods. I didn’t notice quite how far I’d gone into the Jaime x Brienne rabbit hole until I saw this was the only non-JxB fic I wrote since 2021. There isn’t even any monster fucking in it!

Oh So Easy, Oh So Hard

Summary: Riverrun is their beginning.

Show canon AU of a sort. One of the prompts was to write the 8x04 scene in a different setting, and I ran with it. I obsessively listened to one song per chapter, which I’m not sure I’ve done before.

Finest, Furthest, Most Unknown Edge

Summary: For the rest of her days, Brienne will never know what causes the crash. All she wants, more than her own survival, is for the Stark girls to be safe. Instead, they're trapped on an alien planet filled with unknown danger. Then she finds the man, bound, and battered, and broken. The biggest threat may not be the planet itself but whatever horrors follow a fallen Lannister.

Space AU. I love space aus. This is one of the few I’ve written. I should do another.

Come Over and Make Up My Mind

Summary: Five times Brienne swears it's the very last time...

Modern AU. The prompt was “Conflicted”, one of the few Halestorm songs I’d never heard before. Quite enjoyed going back to my writing roots. All porn all the time.

Drink Deep

Summary: Murderer. Monster. Man without honour. She loves him, all of him, even so.

Vampire western AU. Technically monster fucking, though I rarely count vampires in that. Do love a good weird west au.

Here We Go to War

Summary: War to the east, the Dragon queen and her foreign armies come to take back the Seven Kingdoms with fire and blood and demand the North bend the knee.

War to the south, the Lannister queen took her throne in wildfire and the blood of innocents and demands the head of Sansa Stark.

War to the north, beyond the Wall, the Night King and his army of the dead demand nothing but death.

War comes for them all.

In the middle, two tired knights try to protect the ones they love and the ones to whom they're sworn.

Show AU. Jaime leaves Cersei after she blows up the Sept and things escalate from there. As did the story. Started as one scene, a love confession in a bath, and ended up going on for nearly 50,000 words.

Jaime x Brienne 2021 Exchange Fic Recs!!!

Hey there! While I haven’t quite gotten through all of the fics in this year’s Jaime x Brienne Fic Exchange, I wanted to go ahead and get this rec list posted ahead of the reveal tomorrow night. I plan to add to it once I finish the final batch of stories and go back and reread a few I bookmarked. So without further ado, and in no particular order, here are some of my favorites:

Desserts. [Modern AU] This wonderful story was written for me and it’s a lovely character study of chef!Jaime and his growing relationship with Brienne (who is his sous chef even if it takes him forever to admit it). But what will Jaime do when Hyle Hunt walks into his restaurant, stating that he’s Brienne’s fiancé? Jaime’s response is epic, so don’t miss out on this one!!

Bug Juice: Jaime and Brienne’s Summer at Camp. [Modern AU]. A story with a Myrcella POV! This author did a fantastic job of combining a 90’s children’s show with a GoT Season 8 fix-it. Myrcella’s running commentary on the last episode of the season is hilarious as she finds out whether her Uncle Jaime will finally get together with Equestrian Director Brienne!

Come Home. [Show canon divergence]. This was so beautifully written. When Selwyn sends Brienne an urgent message for her to come home, Brienne doesn’t know what to expect. What she finds is that Evenfall Hall has a very problematic guest that’s inevitably going to attract trouble when the world finds out he’s there. To say more would spoil the surprise.

On Paper. [Modern AU]. Poor Addam Marbrand, forever stuck dealing with Jaime’s perpetual inability to flirt effectively. One of the funniest stories I read in the exchange.

Safe. [Modern AU]. Oh. My. God. The train heist story. Electric sexual tension between Jaime and Brienne, competence kink, and a wonderful backstory woven throughout. Guh.

Ding Dong Ditch, Baby. [Modern AU]. Jaime needs Brienne’s help when someone leaves an unexpected package for Tyrion on his doorstep. Complicating matters is that their one date was an absolute disaster, not that that will keep the sexual tension at bay!

Unrestrained Summer Fun. [Modern AU]. Jaime, Brienne, and Cleos spend one memorable summer together as children, and are reunited about twenty years later. The author cleverly recreates their trip through the Riverlands in a series of misadventures only kids could have. I loved this story so much!!

Has the Past Passed? [Modern AU]. Jaime and Brienne were driven apart by a misunderstanding. Ten years later, Jaime returns—as Brienne’s on the verge of marrying another man. It’s not every story that has you feeling sorry for Hyle Hunt for a while, and the author handles the sticky situation deftly.

they say your body is full of sin (it’s the door through where peace begins). [Modern AU]. Take a premise that could’ve been a pretty quick, hot-and-heavy PWP (5+1 masturbation fic). Throw in Jaime’s complicated history with his father driving him to become a camboy, lonely journalist Brienne tuning into his channel, and don’t forget the feelings. Lots and LOTS of feelings. And baked goods. Have I left anything out? Probably. This story is amazing.

Where I Cannot Stand. [Firefly AU]. I must admit, I’ve never watched Firefly. That will soon be rectified as this story was fantastic. Jaime and his ragtag crew take on two passengers for their trip to the Twins. One of them is a tall, mysterious blond acting suspicious and bringing along a large crate. To quote Jaime at one point in the story, “What could go wrong?” (Seriously, Jaime, you’d think you would know NEVER to say such a thing.)

right here, forever. [The Martian AU]. MARTIAN AU! MARTIAN AU!!! Brienne finds herself stranded with Jaime on Mars—not ideal considering they’ve got a complicated history. One of my favorite movies mashed up with my favorite OTP? That’s my catnip.

time for some fic recommendations!

The @jaime-brienne-fic-exchange wraps up in less than four hours so I’m getting these in just under the wire!

Disclaimer/warning/whatever: I did not read all 1.3 million words :( I really was going to try, but it started to feel like homework after a while and these 102 writers deserve a better audience. So I took a bit of a break and as a result I had to triage a bit, choosing to read more but shorter stories. Sorry prolific multichap writers! You’re amazing and I will get there soon! I’ll even try to comment on every chapter to make it up to you! I also still have a hangup when it comes to talking about smutfic (I’m working on it, because it’s kind of dumb, but midwestern quasi-puritan conditioning is a real pain) so there won’t be any of those in my recs. Again, sorry smut writers! You’re great! Also, this is only main-exchange recs, because I haven’t read any of the Lil’ Oathkeepers yet.

And finally, I am reccing a few stories that I’ve been speculated to have written (and I’m not reccing the one I *did* write), so I’m sorry if that gives away too much information? But see also: less than four hours until author reveals. (also can I just say I adore the handful of people who guessed me as a writer-- I don’t even know what my style is but it’s really cool to know that other people do!)

So here we go!

Part 1: Stories aimed directly at my face (mostly metaphorically)

First and probably most obviously: Queens of Love and Beauty (T, 6k, modern AU) is my gift and I love it! Brienne runs a body-positive portrait studio with vintage glamour vibes. The author even threw in a reference to my abiding love for the calming power of spreadsheets as a special treat for me. There’s a wonderful interplay between historical and modern that highlights the contrasts within and between characters that I absolutely adore. It’s all so warm and pretty and it makes me extremely happy. AND THERE’S CORSETS.

Then we have the modern AUs that I didn’t personally request but still hit so many of my favorite things. Funny Way of Showing It (T, 3.5k) features our heroes as academic scientists (be still my heart!), with a wonderful cast of supporting characters as their grad students. It’s told from Pod’s POV too, which is an absolute delight. Unrestrained Summer Fun (T, 4.7k) has them meeting as children when Genna and Cleos rent a vacation house next door to Selwyn and Brienne. I love Brienne and Cleos being friends before Jaime comes onto the scene, and I adore the dynamic between the three of them once he does. Cleos, my boy! The canon stuff is done really well (I laughed so hard at one bit in particular that I don’t want to spoil) and the childhood-summer vibes are pitch-perfect. The beginning of devotion (T, 11k) features Brienne inheriting a decrepit Evenfall Hall and deciding whether to keep and restore it, and as someone working on a project house at the moment, I found this one very relatable. But on top of that, the slowly-unfolding backstory between our heroes is so SO well done, and everything’s woven together in an incredibly satisfying way. And finally, Climbing Mountains (G, 3k) starts with a Mary Oliver quote so I’m already sold. But then it goes on to spin a beautiful story of Brienne’s approach to risk, and how that relates to Jaime, and I am entirely made of heart eyes.

Finally (for this part), a couple of my favorites from the bounty of space-themed fics. As an avowed and die-hard fan of this kind of AU I was so happy to see so much fun genre work this year! And I haven’t gotten to some of the longer ones, so I’m looking forward to that and will rec as needed. It is not in the stars (T, 3k) is a Dune AU that I just felt in my whole body. I haven’t read Dune in ages but it’s a huge part of my genre-childhood and this story really captured the atmosphere. I would have happily read 100k of it, yet at the same time there’s something really magical about the economical storytelling. Absolutely the best use of Brienne’s blue eyes I’ve ever seen in an AU. And finally, I have to shout about show me where my skin begins (E, 41k), one of the only 30k+ fics I’ve read and one of the only E-rated, but the giftee was so effusive about it (and I trust their judgement) so I loaded it up before my long car trip and holy shirtballs folks, it is incredible. I will say that it doesn’t become E-rated until the last chapter, but also the E-rated stuff is incredibly beautifully done. The story takes place in an original space/sci-fi setting and it blew my entire mind. So much creativity, so much fantastic character work, so atmospheric (no pun intended). (just a note: space and/or genre fics seem to be getting a bit less attention at the moment, and while it’s cool to have preferences, I’d really suggest giving them a shot this year!)
