Air misspoke when saying Pope John XXII’s declaration of witchcraft as heresy in 1320 took the form of a papal bull. Though the pope eventually described witchcraft and announced that anyone who engaged with it would be excommunicated in his 1336 papal bull Super illius specula, his initial 1320 judgment was outlined in Cardinal William of Santa Sabina’s “Letter of 22 August 1320, to Inquisitors of Carcassone and Toulouse”

In the episode, Air stated that Matthew Hopkins charged around £20 per town, in reference to how much he was reported to have charged the town of Stowmarket in A.G. Hollingsworth’s History of Stowmarket (1844). According to the records, he charged £23 plus traveling expenses. Hopkins himself, however,  stated that he only took ��twenty shillings a town” (A History of Witchcraft In England from 1558 to 1718)

A weapon against evil

(from the Secret of the Rosary St Louis de Montfort)

While Saint Dominic was preaching the Rosary in Carcassonne, a heretic made fun of the miracles and the fifteen mysteries of the Holy Rosary, and this prevented other heretics from being converted. As a punishment God suffered fifteen thousand devils to enter the man's body.

His parents took him to Father Dominic to be delivered from the evil spirits. He started to pray and begged everyone who was there to say the Rosary out loud with him, and at each Hail Mary Our Lady drove out one hundred devils out of the heretic's body and they came out in the form of red hot coals.

After he had been delivered he abjured his former errors, was converted and joined the Rosary Confraternity. Several of his associates did the same, having been greatly moved by his punishment and by the power of the Rosary.

The learned Franciscan, Carthagena, as well as several other authors, say that an extraordinary event took place in 1482: The Venerable James Sprenger and other religious of his order were zealously working to re-establish devotion to the Holy Rosary and also to erect a Confraternity in the city of Cologne.

Unfortunately two priests who were famous for their preaching ability were jealous of the great influence they were exerting through preaching the Rosary. So these two Fathers spoke against this devotion whenever they had a chance, and as they were very eloquent and had a great reputation they persuaded many people not to join the Confraternity.

One of them, bound and determined to achieve his wicked end, wrote a special sermon against the Rosary and planned to give it the following Sunday. But when it came time for the sermon he never appeared and, after a certain amount of waiting somebody went to fetch him. He was found dead, and evidently had died alone without any one to help him and without seeing a priest.

After convincing himself that death had been due to natural causes, the other priest decided to carry out his friend's plan and hoped to put an end to the Confraternity of the Rosary. However, when the day came for him to preach and it was time to give the sermon God punished him by striking him down with paralysis which deprived him both of the use of his limbs and of his power of speech.

At last he admitted his sin and likewise that of his friend and immediately, in his heart of hearts, he silently besought Our Lady to help him. He promised her that is she would only cure him he would preach the Holy Rosary with as much zeal as that with which he had formerly fought against it. For this end he implored her to restore his health and speech which she did, and finding himself instantaneously cured he rose up like another Saul, a persecutor turned defender of the Holy Rosary. He publicly acknowledged his former error and ever after preached the wonders of the Most Holy Rosary with great zeal and eloquence.

'The giving up of witchcraft,' said John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, 'is in effect the giving up of the Bible.' William Blackstone, the celebrated jurist, in his Commentaries on the Laws of England (1765), asserted:

"To deny the possibility, nay, actual existence of witchcraft and sorcery is at once flatly to contradict the revealed word of God in various passages of both the Old and New Testament."

Innocent commended 'Our dear sons Henry Kramer and James Sprenger' who 'have been by Letters Apostolic delegated as Inquisitors of these heretical [de]pravities'. If 'the abominations and enormities in question remain unpunished,' the souls of multitudes face eternal damnation.

The Pope appointed Kramer and Sprenger to write a comprehensive analysis, using the full academic armoury of the late fifteenth century. With exhaustive citations of scripture and of ancient and modern scholars, they produced the Malleus Maleficarum, the 'Hammer of Witches', aptly described as one of the most terrifying documents in human history. Thomas Ady, in A Candle in the Dark, condemned it as 'villainous Doctrines & Inventions', 'horrible lyes and impossibilities', serving to hide 'their unparalleled cruelty from the ears of the world'. What the Malleus comes down to, pretty much, is that if you're accused of witchcraft, you're a witch.

Torture is an unfailing means to demonstrate the validity of the accusation. There are no rights of the defendant. There is no opportunity to confront the accusers. Little attention is given to the possibility that accusations might be made for impious purposes - jealousy, say, or revenge, or the greed of the inquisitors who routinely confiscated for their own private benefit the property of the accused. This technical manual for torturers also includes methods of punishment tailored to release demons from the victim's body before the process kills her. The Malleus in hand, the Pope's encouragement guaranteed, Inquisitors began springing up all over Europe.

It quickly became an expense account scam. All costs of investigation, trial and execution were borne by the accused or her relatives, down to per diem for the private detectives hired to spy on her, wine for her guards, banquets for her judges, the travel expenses of a messenger sent to fetch a more experienced torturer from another city, and the faggots, tar and hangman's rope. Then there was a bonus to the members of the tribunal for each witch burned. The convicted witch's remaining property, if any, was divided between Church and State. As this legally and morally sanctioned mass murder and theft became institutionalized, as a vast bureaucracy arose to serve it, attention was turned from poor hags and crones to the middle class and well-to-do of both sexes.

The more who, under torture, confessed to witchcraft, the harder it was to maintain that the whole business was mere fantasy. Since each 'witch' was made to implicate others, the numbers grew exponentially. These constituted 'frightful proofs that the Devil is still alive', as it was later put in America in the Salem witch trials. In a credulous age, the most fantastic testimony was soberly accepted - that tens of thousands of witches had gathered for a Sabbath in public squares in France, or that 12,000 of them darkened the skies as they flew to Newfoundland. The Bible had counselled, 'Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live.' Legions of women were burned to death.* And the most horrendous tortures were routinely applied to every defendant, young or old, after the instruments of torture were first blessed by the priests. Innocent himself died in 1492, following unsuccessful attempts to keep him alive by transfusion (which resulted in the deaths of three boys) and by suckling at the breast of a nursing mother. He was mourned by his mistress and their children.

Malleus Maleficarum was first published in 1486, but some decades after, it was picked up and added to by a second author. It went through nearly 30 revisions between when it was first published and 1600. However, the bulk of it was written by just two men — James Sprenger and Henry Kramer.

Additionally, it's often considered to be one of the primary references used for identifying and persecuting witches for two centuries following its publication, and was one of several key factors that led to the witchtrails. Though, other researchers say that its use wasn't specific to just the killing of anyone that didn't fit societal norms witchcraft, but was used as a respected source regarding satanism and Christian defense as a whole.

That all being said, I find it funny that their "identifiers" for witches were anything from odd birthmarks to living alone to........ having 20-30 penises... just...... locked up... eating fucking oats and corn.

just learned today that there was a german monk who was obsessed with witches and women having sex so he wrote an entire book called the hammer of witches where in one part he describes in detail that witches have the ability to make people’s penises disappear and they keep the penises as pets and feed them oats
